In anticipation of the repair, many have the question of what material to choose for wall decoration. Wallpaper has not been inspiring for a long time, it is not practical to use water-based paint, especially for residential premises, resistant oil paint is the last century. Therefore, the consumer is in search of a material that is affordable, has high decorative qualities and good performance. All requirements are met by decorative plaster. It is represented by many types, among which a mixture based on silk threads compares favorably. Walls covered with such plaster give a pleasant tactile sensation. The level of brightness of the lighting allows you to play the finish with a variety of shades. The article will discuss the varieties of silk plaster and the technology of its application.

Where is silk plaster used

It is no secret that most apartment owners cannot boast not only perfect, but even just plain surfaces. Corners, doorways, window slopes dictate their own rules. All kinds of protrusions and niches also act as a serious obstacle when sticking traditional wallpaper.

  • You can get rid of all the irregularities once and for all by replacing all the skewed openings and by installing the frame, which is later sheathed with plasterboard sheets or plastic panels. It should be noted that the implementation of this ambitious project will require significant financial investments.
  • The use of plaster is possible both on flat surfaces and on walls (ceilings) with small errors. Due to plasticity, the material itself is able to hide small cracks and other imperfections.

  • The use of silk plaster is appropriate in both residential and office premises. Hue (from cold winter to rich summer range) can give the room severity, elegance, solemnity. Fans of avant-garde, bold decisions can use a combination of plaster in contrasting colors. This option involves contacting the master.

The composition of silk plaster

  • The dry mix is made on the basis of polyester with the inclusion of natural or artificial silk fibers. The composition also includes mineral fillers, quartz chips and other decorative additives that add shine to the finished canvas. The binder is acrylic or cellulose glue.

  • Thus, all natural components of the plaster allows us to assert that it is an environmentally friendly and, therefore, safe material. Serious manufacturers provide certificates of compliance with all norms and standards for finishing materials intended for interior work.

Advantages and disadvantages of silk plaster

In addition to high decorative qualities, silk plaster has the following virtues:

  • high-quality mixture, proper application and proper operation provide an almost indefinite service life of the surface;
  • plaster is convenient for finishing complex surfaces with protrusions, niches, rounded corners, etc.;
  • to dull the mixture to work, it is simply necessary to dilute it with water, sometimes dry additives are mixed;
  • ease of application, which means that it is possible to repair on their own;
  • forms an even layer without joints and seams, does not require pattern adjustment;
  • material properties allow you to hide minor defects in walls and ceilings;
  • has high soundproofing and heat-insulating characteristics;
  • application technology allows you to create drawings, panels, contrasting elements;

  • silk plaster lends itself to partial repair.

Disadvantages:

  • hygroscopicity and high absorption of odors limits the use of the mixture. Not recommended for bathrooms or shower rooms. Silk plaster is used with caution in kitchens; to protect the surface, it can be treated with a special varnish, but in this case, partial restoration will become impossible;
  • low coefficient of resistance to mechanical stress. In areas of intensive use, the surface wears out quickly. In this regard, it is recommended to close all external corners with decorative corners.

Silk plaster manufacturers

Manufacturers provide the consumer with a wide range of silk plaster with a suitable shade to choose from. The price per package depends on the use of certain additives and the country of origin. Of course, if the mixture contains natural silk fibers, then this fact significantly affects the final cost of the product.

Superiority confidently hold France and Italy. Turkey offers good quality at an affordable price, while the products of a domestic manufacturer correspond to the expression “cheap and cheerful”.

Here is a brief overview of companies that have widely introduced mixtures to the construction market.

  • SÉNIDÉKO (France)- the oldest company has been manufacturing textured coatings since 1864. The secrets of production, together with innovative technologies, allows us to produce excellent products with more than 150 shades.

  • Valpaint (Italy)- this company was founded more than a quarter of a century ago. Today, it is considered the most advanced factory thanks to its technological equipment and modern laboratories.
  • OIKOS (Italy) - products manufactured by one of the largest suppliers are especially popular. Extensive experience, and this is almost 30 years, allows us to satisfy the taste preferences of any consumer.
  • Bayramlar (Turkey)- one of the first enterprises (1988), the main activity of which was the production of building finishing materials. Thanks to our own development, the addition of marble chips to the plaster mix, we managed to achieve an unsurpassed effect.
  • Silk Coat (Turkey)- began its activity in 1993 with the production and sale of a then little-known material - decorative plasters. At the moment, the trademark has become popular, which allows you to export products to more than 40 countries around the world.
  • Rodnik Art (Russia)- plaster is produced under the trade mark Silk Plaster. A distinctive feature of silk plaster silk plaster is its simple application, which can be mastered by novice masters.

Silk plaster how to apply

Plaster is available in two types:

  • dry silk plaster. It is produced in the form of a ready-made dry mixture, it is only diluted with water to the desired consistency;
  • liquid silk plaster. Sold in the form of liquid and dry components that must be mixed.

Depending on the source materials, there are several ways to apply the elastic mixture to the surface:

  • with a spatula or trowel;
  • for initially liquid mixtures, a spray gun can also be used. Such an application will reduce the consumption of material, but it is better to entrust the work to professionals.

But to give relief, a textured roller, sponge, wrinkled fabric or other improvised means are used.

Preparing walls for silk plaster

Any finishing material needs preliminary preparation of the walls or ceiling, and silk plaster is no exception. Although liquid wallpaper has masking abilities, deeper cracks, gaps (over 3 mm) should be repaired in advance. Remains of wallpaper, glue, putty, paint are removed.

  • If these works are neglected, then after a certain period, stains will appear on the surface, and local exfoliation of the mixture is also possible. In addition, the previous coating may have a non-uniform color, which will affect the final color of the plaster. In the best case, the expected color will turn out to be not quite the right shade, in the worst case, “the color of a sick tiger.” Therefore, the following recommendations should be followed in order to avoid unaesthetic consequences.

Preparing a concrete wall for silk plaster

  • These walls are highly absorbent. Bald spots may appear on the surface even after 10 applied layers of water-based paint. Unjustified consumption of paintwork materials can be avoided by applying putty mixtures. At the same time, such work will serve as a kind of training before applying decorative plaster.
  • The puttied surface is treated with a facade primer, and then painted white. It should be noted right away that it is allowed to tint the paint under the base, but only in the tone of the future plaster.

Preparing the plastered surface

  • The previous coating should not peel or peel off. Such defects are cleaned off, if necessary, special strengthening agents are used. Similar mixtures are also recommended for the treatment of old crumbling concrete surfaces.
  • Cleaned places are puttied, the entire surface is treated with impregnation or primer. If defects are not visible on the plastered walls, but there are dirty stains or stains, then it is likely that they will “safely” move to a new coating.
  • You can protect yourself from such troubles by painting surfaces with oil or alkyd paint. It is possible to use paint and varnish products on other bases, but it is better to first check its compatibility with silk plaster on a small section of the wall.

Preparation of drywall sheets for silk plaster

  • This material is widely used for leveling surfaces and organizing internal partitions. Many are mistaken, thinking that it is enough to close up only the joints of the sheets. Despite the fact that the plates are even and smooth, they must be completely puttied.
  • When using light-colored plaster, treated joints may appear. Let it be barely noticeable, but their presence can spoil the overall impression of the work done. Therefore, the surfaces after puttying are covered with white paint, to which it is recommended to add PVA glue in a ratio of 3: 1.

  • Particular attention is paid to fasteners, hardware must be deepened and completely covered with putty. This will help prevent rust stains from forming.

Wood surface preparation

  • Surfaces made of chipboard, MDF, moisture-resistant plywood can also be covered with silk liquid wallpaper.
  • Before application, they must be puttied with appropriate plaster mixtures and treated with a primer.

metal elements

  • This refers to the application of plaster on the protruding parts of pipes, air ducts, fittings, etc. Previously, such elements are painted with oil paint or nitro enamel.
  • Regardless of the type of wall, during puttying work on the outer corners (arches, openings), perforated PVC corners are installed. They will not only facilitate the finishing of these complex elements, but also increase the wear resistance of the material.

DIY silk plaster

Application of dry silk plaster

  • Pour the required amount of warm water into a plastic container, as indicated in the attached manual (available in each package). Spangles fall asleep, if any. The contents of the package are shaken, kneaded and poured into a container of water.
  • Everything is thoroughly mixed, skipping and rubbing the mass between the fingers, in order to avoid the formation of lumps. Thanks to natural materials, this can be done with bare hands.

  • Silk plaster is diluted in such quantity that it is enough for one wall. If after the work some part of the finished mixture remains, then it is added to the next batch.

Important: partial mixing of the powder is not allowed. Such actions will lead to an uneven distribution of all components of the plaster, in connection with which there may be color heterogeneity or poor adhesion to the surface.

  • Mixing is done 12 hours before application, as a rule, the plaster is soaked overnight. Immediately before use, the mass is mixed again. If necessary, you can add a little water. This will ensure that the mixture is easily applied to the surface. On average, the consumption of silk plaster is 1kg / 4-5m2.
  • In small portions, the mixture is applied to the walls with a spatula or trowel, which must be kept at an angle of 10-15 ° relative to the surface. Work starts from the corner. The layer thickness should be 1.5-2 mm, a thicker layer will create roughness, a thin layer will show the substrate.

  • After a couple of hours, in order to completely smooth the plastered surface, it is recommended to walk on it with a spatula, periodically wetted in water. Drying time depends on the temperature and humidity of the room. Under normal conditions, the wall will be ready for operational loads in 48-72 hours.
  • To speed up the drying process, you can ventilate the room (at a positive temperature), it is also allowed to use heaters.
  • A small part of the finished plaster can be frozen, so that later it can be used as a repair material. Low temperatures do not contribute to the loss of performance of the mixture.

Application of liquid silk plaster

  • The liquid base, like the color itself, is thoroughly mixed first separately, and then after they are combined. To obtain the desired shade of silk plaster, there is an instruction that is indicated on the packages. Also on the bank there is a special device that allows you to accurately measure milliliters of color.
  • It is applied to the surface with a spatula. The mixture is quite liquid, so it is taken in small quantities. The layer thickness should not exceed 2 mm.

With such work, it is much more convenient to use a roller with a short nap. It is important to monitor the pressure of the tool and the uniformity of application.

Decorating with silk plaster

By itself, the silk surface looks elegant and very respectable, but if there is a great desire, then additional decoration can be performed.

  • For this, the same trowel is suitable, it is carried out over a dry layer. Movements can be arbitrary (in the form of a Christmas tree, waves, etc.), the main thing is that they be ordered and in one direction, that is, from top to bottom or from right to left.

The tool can be a clothes brush with a medium-hard bristle, a washcloth, a crumpled cloth. It is recommended to first outline the pattern on the rough surface. To achieve a greater effect when decorating the surface, the following tip will help:

  • a mixture is poured into a small tray, painted in a lighter or darker shade than the base itself. And by means of a sponge it is transferred to the wall;
  • but before that, excess material must be removed from the sponge; any rough surface is suitable for this. This method of decoration requires a firm hand, therefore it is not recommended to decorate using this technology with your own hands.

Airbrush

  • Not all plaster mixtures can be applied with a spray gun. The packaging must have the appropriate marking MH - machine application.
  • It also indicates the viscosity of the material and other parameters that will help you choose the compressor power, nozzle diameter, etc.
  • It should be noted right away that a household vacuum cleaner is not suitable for these purposes.

Drawing drawings

  • As a fragmentary decoration of one wall, a flower or some pattern made of plaster of a different shade can serve. In principle, this task can be simple if one of the relatives or close friends has artistic skills.

  • On the desired section of the wall, the pattern you like is drawn by hand, you can also use a stencil. Using a construction knife, the inside of the pattern is cut out. The edges are protected with a wide masking tape. Next, you just need to fill the empty space with silk plaster of a different shade.

Care of silk plaster

  • This coating does not require special care. Just vacuuming the walls from time to time is enough. Dirt near sockets, switches, etc. is removed with an eraser.
  • If the silk plaster has been coated with a protective varnish, then the surface is cleaned with a damp cloth.

Here is such a material, which is distinguished by high decorative qualities, an affordable price, unless, of course, you purchase original French products, and with easy application will add sophistication to any room. And additional decoration will emphasize the uniqueness of the design.
