Ondulin roofing

Ondulin - a material that looks like slate, but has properties far superior to it, appeared on the Russian construction market a little over 20 years ago. But homeowners and builders have already appreciated this practical and inexpensive roofing material, calling it "Euroslate".

Ondulin is native to France. The name of the profiled bitumen-cellulose sheets was given in honor of the company that developed and patented this material in the middle of the last century, "Onduline". And the word itself is translated as "wavy." Euroslate, which was created as an alternative to more expensive roofing, ceramic and metal tiles, has withstood the test of time and has taken a strong position in the market.

Today, the production of roofing ondulin has been established in many countries of the world, including Russia. The popularity of the material is due to its functionality, reliability and availability. Most often, ondulin roofs are used in low-rise buildings and private households. But it can also be used in industrial facilities. Flexible and lightweight sheets of roofing ondulin are ideal for laying on the roofs of houses, gazebos, garages and other light outbuildings, sheds.

In the production of roofing ondulin, only environmentally friendly components are used. The material sheet consists of four components:

  • Bases made from waste paper, various wastes of pulp and paper and cardboard mills. Paper or pulp pulp is shredded, mixed with other components and pressed into large sheets;
  • Mineral fillers that allow the product to keep its shape;
  • Impregnation with specially purified bitumen, which is applied to the base in a certain temperature regime and under high pressure;
  • Coloring pigments and mineral chips, which not only increase the operational properties of the product, but also give it an aesthetic and original appearance. Moreover, the coloring can be one- and two-sided, matte and glossy. Usually sheets of roofing ondulin are red, green, brown or black-gray.

A standard ondulin sheet has an area of about 2 square meters, a thickness of 2.5 to 3 millimeters, a weight of about 6.5 kilograms, and a corrugation height of 3.6 centimeters. Despite the apparent fragility, the material is able to withstand a load of up to 960 kilograms per square, and it is also easy to endure temperature changes. The warranty period of the product is up to 25 cycles of freezing and thawing.

Varieties of material: what to prefer?

To the attention of those who plan to equip a roof from ondulin, several varieties of material are presented on the market. The most common varieties of roofing ondulin are "Smart" and "Tile".

  • Smart, also known as euroslate, is bitumen-cellulose sheets measuring 1950 by 950 millimeters, 3 millimeters thick and weighing 6.3 kilograms. Unlike the traditional material, this version is equipped with the "Smart Lock" system, which greatly simplifies the installation of Ondulin Smart: roofs of any type are suitable for this material. Special guides allow you to make even cuts, reduce the size of the overlap, and marking for nails significantly reduces the complexity of the process. The material has excellent plasticity: it easily bends along the waves, the height of which is 36 millimeters. The flexibility of Ondulin Smart allows it to be used on roofs of complex construction. The warranty period of the product is 15 years.

  • Tiles are a kind of roofing ondulin, which, in terms of performance, are not inferior to the Smart model. In terms of size, weight, thickness and method of fixation, the material is similar to other analogues. The main difference is the presence of dark horizontal stripes on the surface, which create the illusion of natural tiling. Seven-wave sheets are presented in three colors: green, brown and red, most similar to the range of natural tiles.

Also on the building materials market you can find such varieties of ondulin as:

  • Ondalux: sheets having a thickness of 2.6 millimeters and a weight of 6 kilograms;
  • Onduvilla, characterized by smaller dimensions and weight of the sheet. The material in its properties is closer to soft tiles, but according to the manufacturing method, it still belongs to the ondulin class;

  • Nulin is an American analogue of popular material. It has large sheet dimensions and a higher, up to 25 years, warranty period.

If you are going to cover the Smart roof with ondulin or any other kind of material, you should remember that the manufacturers also took care of the components. Skates, valleys, end, wind and cornice strips, tongs, even protective nail heads can be matched to match the main coating. This allows not only to achieve the ideal appearance of the roof, but also serves as a guarantee of the quality and reliability of the roof.

Ondulin roofing: advantages and disadvantages

Like any other building material, ondulin has its pros and cons. The first ones include:

  • Environmental friendliness. The material does not contain substances that can harm human or animal health, as well as damage the environment;
  • Resistance to external influences: both to atmospheric phenomena and to aggressive chemicals. This allows the material to be used even in industrial areas;
  • Light weight of the product;
  • Excellent water, heat and sound insulation properties. The material does not retain water, reliably protects against external noise and prevents the formation of condensate;
  • Ease of delivery, storage and installation;
  • The plasticity of the material, which allows it to be used on roofs with bends, complex configuration and a large angle of inclination;
  • Maintainability. In case of damage to some areas, it is quite easy to replace a single sheet. And you can refresh the lost brightness of the color of the ondulin roof with the help of ordinary painting;
  • Aesthetics. The richness of the color scheme allows you to implement various design ideas;

  • Availability. This is one of the most inexpensive roofing materials on the market: only heavy and unsafe slate is cheaper.

But this material also has a number of disadvantages:

  • Fire hazard. The material is not subject to spontaneous combustion, but it perfectly supports the combustion process;
  • Short service life compared to other types of material. Manufacturers give a guarantee for 15-25 years, and often this is the real life span of ondulin roofs;
  • Relative resistance to extremely low or high temperatures. In severe cold, the material becomes brittle, in the heat it begins to melt slightly. Roofing work should not be carried out in winter and on the hottest summer days, as the material may begin to deform;
  • Gradual loss of color by the ondulin roof. However, this disadvantage is inherent in almost any tinted coatings and is easily eliminated by ordinary painting;
  • In case of violation of the laying technology, the material is easily damaged. If a rigid reinforced crate was not previously equipped, then the flexible and lightweight ondulin may be damaged by mechanical action.

Available roof option

Ondulin is a material that is affordable and easy to carry out roofing work. The cost of the material depends on a number of factors: the manufacturer, the type of sheets, their color and size. Despite the fact that the ondulin roofing is quite simple, in order to obtain a high-quality result, it is necessary to thoroughly prepare the roof base. Violation of the preparatory work technology can lead to a violation of the integrity of the coating and damage to individual elements of the ondulin roof. Therefore, it is better to entrust the execution of these works to specialists.

Our company offers a wide range of roofing ondulin of various brands and colors. And the craftsmen, who have extensive experience working with this material, will perform roofing work on the roof of any degree of complexity with high quality and in the required time frame. The prices for the material itself and services will pleasantly surprise you.
