The disadvantages of such structures are also important, however, many of them can be avoided if the wood is properly treated in a timely manner.

Kinds

High-quality and environmentally friendly greenhouses can be different.

  • Attached. This structure is erected as an extension to the southern wall of almost any building. This type of construction is the best solution for a thrifty person who wants to save free space on his site, and also does not want to spend extra money on a suitable roof (in in this case it can be a film (spunbond or agrofibre), polycarbonate or glass). One of the sides of such a greenhouse is initially already prepared. Experts say that the most successful material to which extensions should be made is ceramic brick.

  • Gable. This form of greenhouse is one of the most popular and in demand. In most cases, gable structures are found on sites. In them, the roof angle rarely exceeds 30 degrees. In this house-shaped structure, it is possible to make vents directly in the roof to ventilate the interior space.

  • Circular. This design is characterized by an attractive appearance. It is very similar to a neat gazebo or a separate corner for friendly gatherings. But you need to take into account that circular structures must be well ventilated, so they cannot be left without the addition of vents.

  • Arched. No less attractive are arched greenhouses. They are ideal for growing different crops.

These buildings are also divided according to the main covering that is present in them.

The following options exist:

  • glass;
  • film;
  • made of polycarbonate.

The film option is considered the most economical. But it cannot be called durable, because usually the film is only enough for one season, and this is very little. Glass parts are perfect for a wooden frame. They retain heat remarkably well and look aesthetically pleasing. However, these solutions often cost a pretty penny and are quite fragile. Polycarbonate can be an excellent alternative. It has good light transmission, but at the same time costs several times less than glass. Installing such a coating will not be difficult even for a beginner in such matters.

Manufacturing materials

The quality of the resulting frame will directly depend on the quality of the wood. That is why it is so important to choose good materials wisely so that the result does not leave the owners disappointed. Experts advise giving preference to larch. This species combines a high level of density and strength characteristics, as well as resistance to rot, characteristic of coniferous trees. Spruce and pine, which are less susceptible to negative external influences, are considered equally wear-resistant and unpretentious. However, it must be taken into account that their strength characteristics cannot be called ideal. Frames and supporting structures made of the specified wood species should be denser and more massive.

Among hardwoods, oak, beech and teak are perfect. It is permissible to use these types, but if you do not have the appropriate experience, then it is better to choose other raw materials, since the listed rocks are more difficult to process, which is why it is not so easy to work with them. Without special carpentry machines in stock, making a greenhouse from larch will be too difficult. Under these conditions, you risk spoiling the material without achieving the desired result.

Regardless of what kind of wood you choose for making a greenhouse, you need to remember that it must meet certain requirements for its quality:

For the manufacture of frames, experts recommend using 50x50 timber. To support the load-bearing parts of small greenhouses (less than 3 m in width), it is permissible to use elements with similar parameters. As for specimens in which the width of the slope is more than 6 m, additional fastening will be required.

Regarding covering material for wooden greenhouse, then the most common options were listed above.

Dimensions

Wooden structures can be made either compact and modest, or very serious, with large dimensions. The choice of optimal sizes directly depends on the area of ​​the plot, as well as the personal preferences of the owners of the dacha or private house. Of course, it is better not to install too large a structure on small-sized land, because it will take up a lot of space and may look disharmonious in such an environment. It’s better to build a small greenhouse - it will look great in a small area.

Many people are interested in what the standard sizes of wooden greenhouses are. The answer is simple - such standards do not exist. As stated earlier, everything depends only on the desires of the consumer.

The main advantage of a spacious structure is that in its conditions it will be possible to place a lot of plantings. However, we must not forget that the larger the structure, the more difficult it is to warm it up to the required values.

The following important components must fit inside the greenhouse, without which it will not be very comfortable to use:

  • a free central passage, that is, a path running in the middle - it should be comfortable for you to walk along it. Typically this zone is about 1 m wide;
  • approach to plants - you must have access to absolutely all plants planted in the greenhouse;
  • beds can have almost any size. Most often, this parameter varies from 1 to 1.5 m in width. There is no particular point in making them even wider;
  • As for the height parameter, it should be such that a person can be in the greenhouse without bending or stooping. The optimal parameter is 2.5 m.

How to build in a country house?

It is possible to build a wooden greenhouse with your own hands. To achieve good result, you need to turn to materials that meet all requirements. In addition, it is important to adhere to all points step by step instructions. Let's consider step by step how you can build such a structure on the site yourself.

Standard frame structure It is possible to build with a base of 90x90 mm bars. In this case, purlins will be used to connect the racks at the top and bottom. From above will pass rafter system roofs with two slopes. The end walls will need to be supplemented with two doors. Between the racks there will be blank panels assembled from dense boards. In the future, they need to be framed. The upper part and roof of this structure can be decorated with glass. To bring this simple project to life, you will need the following components:

  • bars with a cross section of 90x90 mm – 4 pcs. 4.2 m long;
  • 4 things. with a length of 3 m;
  • 12 pcs. – 3.6 m each;
  • 38 pcs. – 1.8 m each.

You will also need a half-beam with a section of 54x90 mm:

  • 2 pcs. 3 m long;
  • 4 things. 4.2 m long;
  • 24 pcs. – 2.4 m each;
  • 28 pcs. – 1.8 m each;
  • 34 pcs. – 1.2 m each;
  • 102 pcs. – 0.9 m each.

You will also need 6 plywood sheets, nails, an antiseptic composition for wood, a roofing cornice, metal handles and door locks, door hinges. First, it will be necessary to create the foundation and foundation of the frame structure. For a greenhouse, it is permissible to prepare a strip-type foundation. First you need to assemble and lay out the lower part of the greenhouse frame on the waterproofing material. These components should be thoroughly coated with antiseptics. You will need to install wall racks on the foundation bars, the cross-section of which is also 90x90 mm.

The racks will need to be connected to each other using half-timber strapping made of timber. On the side purlins it is worth leaving marks for fixing the rafter beams. You will also need to make tilt sockets.

Next, you need to collect frame bases gables using racks prepared from very dense boards. The ridge board should be placed under the rafter beams in pre-prepared nests. Thanks to this technique, the glass panels at the top will be much easier to install. The rafters must be assembled using construction nails, the length of which is 100-150 mm. Be sure to check the level of flatness of the slopes using a special lace. Carefully and thoroughly coat the entire wooden structure with an antiseptic solution.

Now you need to correctly install the panels and doors.

Let's look at how this can be done step by step.

  • First you need to make all the necessary parts. All frame elements must be connected at the same angle. The boards belonging to the panels will need to be inserted into the frames, having previously selected a quarter in their parts, that is, a special groove designed for installing the boards of the canvas. Then the workpieces will need to be cut at the required angles, starting from the required size. The upper frames should be prepared for fixing the glass. The panels must be assembled from well-dried boards.
  • Now we need to install the panels. This work must begin with the end floors. The parts must be installed on “finishing” nails with small heads. It is advisable to take fasteners with a length of 75-100 mm. Side walls must be collected in the same way. During installation work, it is important to consider that the side panels will be wider than the end panels. The panels will need to be fixed between the racks. They will also need antiseptic treatment.
  • Now you can proceed to installing the door panels. Doors of a lightweight frame structure should be hung in the openings of the end walls. As for glazing, it can be either full or partial - up to half. The handle (preferably a metal part) must be fixed to the board in the door leaf. With the help of doors, ventilation in the greenhouse will be regulated, so they will not need to be tightened with mesh.

The next stage will be the glazing of the gable parts and roof. First, you need to install a glazing bead on the gable and supplement it with sealant. You will need to insert pre-sized glass into the prepared nests. In a similar way, fragile parts will need to be secured from the outside, and then secured with thin nails. Fix the glass on the roof in the same way. In this case, the support will be the rail that is nailed to the side bases of the rafter beam. The glass will need to be seated on a sealing compound and secured using glazing beads and thin nails.

Having completed the glazing of the greenhouse roof, you need to nail the wind board to the end parts of the rafter beams. Thus, the building will take on a finished look.

Before proceeding to the actual construction of the greenhouse, you will need to draw up detailed drawing(scheme) and future construction project. Based on the data transferred to paper, it will be much easier to calculate how much you will need Construction Materials. The greenhouse must be built on a well-prepared foundation. You will need to remove all debris and weeds from the area where you plan to build the foundation. You should not build a greenhouse in a place where there are significant unevenness and differences.

Do not forget to treat the wood with special protective chemicals. If you don't want to spend on it cash, then you can get by with alternative compositions - recycled machine oil or drying oil. You will need to use these substances 2 times a year - in autumn and spring. There is no point in making a wooden greenhouse too tall. Such a homemade structure will not be stable - it will start to sway from side to side, and it will not be able to warm up to the required level.

If you decide to additionally decorate a structure made of wood, then you need to take into account that painting this material is permissible if the temperature outside is at least 3 degrees Celsius. Only in these circumstances will the paint dry for 2 days, and then crystallize within 3 days. Do not forget to treat wooden structures with antiseptic substances both inside and outside. In order for the products used to have a real impact, it is recommended to apply them to surfaces in 2 or 3 layers, depending on the owner’s budget.

Be sure to choose the right quality wood. Please note: if you use natural material in construction work that has not been dried to the optimal level, then the greenhouse may very soon fail.

Choose a specific covering material based on climatic conditions in your region of residence. The greenhouse door should be located on the leeward side. You should not install it in places where strong winds often blow. Remember that the wind boards and ridge must not only be correctly placed in their places, but also processed conscientiously. These parts must be sanded and sharpened so that the plastic film adjacent to them does not tear on the poor-quality surface.

If you use polycarbonate, which is popular today, as a covering material, then the necessary holes will need to be made in it in advance.

If you do not want to build a standard greenhouse in the form of a house, then you can turn to the Mitlider option (another name is “American”). In such structures there is a variable roof geometry. In this case, the planes of the slopes are at different levels. These structures provide excellent ventilation, providing an ideal microclimate inside the greenhouse. The level of illumination in this product is also close to ideal.

Successful examples and options

As mentioned earlier, greenhouses made of wood can not only fulfill their main function, but also become a real decoration summer cottage. These designs often contain very interesting decorative details, for example, graceful arches, arches or carved components.

Today we continue the conversation about greenhouses and talk about wooden greenhouses. More than ten years ago, in our garden plots there were basically only do-it-yourself wooden greenhouses, covered with ordinary plastic film or, at best, glass. Gardeners grew plants in them for many years until wooden structure did not become unusable, because in those days there were no special impregnations.

Life does not stand still, the emergence of various new materials and the production of industrial greenhouses made of metal, plastic, profiles of various sections and purposes, pushed wooden greenhouses into the background.

Meanwhile, this is an excellent material for human and plant life, these greenhouses are special, they have a special atmosphere, smell, and I must add that they themselves are alive.

A new era for the timber frame greenhouse

But there are still many gardeners who still have a love for wood and continue to use greenhouses made of wood, and for good reason.

Modern construction of a greenhouse made of wood can be completely different from how greenhouses were built over the years.

Today we’ll just talk about the fact that you can make greenhouses with your own hands from wood in a completely different way, using prefabricated modular technology.

What is its advantage?

The fact is that do-it-yourself wooden greenhouses are usually built from timber. To do this, a timber is purchased, cut to the required size and the structure is assembled. This is also often done for such a greenhouse.

Well, if you are planning to increase the size of your greenhouse or, on the contrary, reduce its size, what should you do in this case?

  • The situation in this case is clear, the greenhouse has to be rebuilt and cut, nailed or screwed again;
  • In this case, the configuration of the structure itself changes.

But what if we tell you that you can do it in a completely different way. Easy to make required amount elements from which you can easily assemble wooden greenhouses of various sizes with your own hands.

The most interesting thing in this case is that all the elements are strictly the same, in other words, by choosing one shape and size, you will simply make completely identical parts from wood, from which you can successfully assemble polycarbonate.

  • By removing or adding elements, you can change the size of the greenhouse, and store excess parts in the utility room.
  • If necessary, they can always be returned to their original size.

Tempting, interesting? So how can you build a greenhouse made of wood in such a way that it is no worse than greenhouses made from modern materials, and in some cases even surpasses them in certain parameters?

Building a wooden frame for a greenhouse

Let's get into it right now.

Arc problems:

  • The frame of any greenhouse necessarily consists of arches. The arches must have sufficient strength;
  • It is clear that making arcs of a certain size will not be difficult;
  • By adding the required number of arcs, we can increase the length of our greenhouse, but its width will remain unchanged;
  • The arcs are large, and store unnecessary ones in given time arcs are problematic. In addition, we told you about the possibility of changing the size of the greenhouse not only in length but also in width;
  • This means that our arches must be completely dismountable, consist of exactly the same elements, and at the same time, when assembled, withstand a serious load.

Difficult task? Absolutely not. The fact is that we will produce elements that, although small in size and assembled, will perfectly withstand any load.

Preparation of material

A do-it-yourself greenhouse made of wood necessarily involves the use of wood, so it is necessary to prepare the material.

  • We need a board 50 mm thick
  • Beam 50X50 mm
  • Self-tapping screws
  • Metal corners. Furniture corners work well

Required tool:

  • Hacksaw
  • Jigsaw
  • Screwdriver
  • Hammer
  • Construction tape
  • Building level

The drawing is not always important (see). We are presented with a wooden greenhouse covered with plastic film or polycarbonate.

  • The question arises, how to build a wooden greenhouse with your own hands containing identical elements and freely transformable to different sizes?
  • Before creating a greenhouse, be sure to have a drawing of a wooden greenhouse or, in extreme cases, a sketch. In our case this is not necessary.
  • Before us is a drawing of the key element of such a greenhouse, indicating the exact dimensions.
  • You can use these sizes or choose your own. How to do this will become clear in due time, by the end of reading this article.

The first task is to manufacture the key element

  • This is the only element to create a greenhouse.
  • We will also need to make stiffening ribs, but since we will be making them from 50X50 mm timber, we did not post a drawing of them, since making them will not be difficult, we sawed off a piece of 900 - 1000 mm and we’re done.

As you understand, this is the step size of our frame.

It is important that the number of elements to create an arc is strictly individual. It all depends on the size of the greenhouse. By adding or removing a certain number of elements, we change the width and height of the greenhouse. The length of the greenhouse depends on the number of installed arcs, it’s simple.

In order to produce the element shown in the drawing, it is necessary to make a pattern. Thick cardboard is suitable for this.

The pattern is ready.

  • We take a board 50 mm thick and place a pattern on it.
  • Using a marker, we trace the pattern, transferring its outline to the board.

Our advice is that you will need a lot of elements. Therefore, try to economically arrange the pattern on the board to obtain a minimum of waste.

  • Using a jigsaw we cut out individual elements
  • The edges can be processed using a small plane.
  • The result should be an element exactly the same as shown in the picture.

Arc assembly - first layer

In our case, it took 17 elements to make the arc. But we repeat, everything is arbitrary, it all depends on the required size of the greenhouse.

Our information is that with these elements in stock, you can always quickly assemble a greenhouse of the required size. They are compact and easy to store.

Let's try to assemble the first arc. This is done as follows.

  • On flat surface Our future greenhouse is marked in section.
  • Next, the finished elements are placed on the applied contour. the right amount. They are laid end to end, as shown in the figure.

In the end, you should end up looking like in the picture.

It is important to note that we can easily change the configuration of the arc and thereby adjust not only the width and height, but also the configuration of the future greenhouse.

It can be completely or with an arched roof and straight walls.

Second layer - fastening

  • The first layer has been laid, but the individual elements need to be fastened together.
  • To do this, we lay the second layer on top so that the center of the element of the second layer falls exactly on the center of the junction of the elements of the first layer.

  • Accordingly, the joint of the elements of the second layer is laid in the middle of the element of the first layer. Everything is quite clear in the pictures.

  • The elements are fastened together using self-tapping screws.
  • To do this, holes are drilled in the elements of the first layer of such a diameter that the screws fit into them with interference.
  • Next, the screws are screwed into the first, bottom layer and thus the entire structure is assembled.

  • The result is a strong arc of exactly the specified size.
  • In this way, all subsequent arches are made. Their number directly depends on the length of our greenhouse.

Foundation and impregnation - components of durability

You can install such a greenhouse on any flat surface of your site. But if you want your own wooden greenhouse to serve you for many years, you need to build a foundation for the greenhouse.

Today we will not describe the construction of the foundation, this is not our topic, and on the pages of our resource there is a description of the construction of the foundation for a greenhouse (see section). Therefore, we will skip this part of the construction.

But our entire frame is made of wood. Therefore, just building a foundation will not solve the problem of the durability of our greenhouse.

Building a greenhouse out of wood correctly is not the whole task; the main thing here is to preserve wooden frame from dampness and mold.

Our advice is to make the elements for your greenhouse, process them immediately protective equipment before starting assembly. Disassembled elements are much easier to process, and the quality of the coating will be much higher.

Installation of arches - frame assembly

We can install the first arc of our frame.

  • There are many options for attaching to the foundation; we will not focus on them;
  • Possible, when filling concrete foundation, embed pieces of metal corner into the concrete and secure the arc with bolts;
  • Next, the next arc and all subsequent ones are installed.

  • The result will be the frame of the future greenhouse.

Stiffening rib

  • Stiffening ribs can be installed immediately after installing the arches, or during installation. For this purpose, pieces of timber 50X50 mm are used.
  • Their length directly depends on the pitch distance of the arcs of our greenhouse. In our case it is 900 mm.

As we can see, using one common element and one auxiliary one, you can assemble wooden greenhouses with your own hands for your plot of almost any size.

  • As for fastening the stiffeners, it should be said that they are fastened using self-tapping screws and furniture corners.
  • This allows you to use the same stiffener elements for a greenhouse of any size.

As you can see, our wooden greenhouse project is quite versatile and is a kind of Lego set for gardeners.

Windows – place them where it’s convenient

The only thing that is non-standard in our designer is the spacers in the end parts of our greenhouse, where the door and window are located.

  • About the windows. They can be arranged in almost any part of our greenhouse.

  • The rectangular parts of the walls and roof allow this to be done completely freely.

Reliability - the ratio of elements plus shape

  • This design is freely suitable for covering both from and.
  • A greenhouse made of wood and glass requires the construction of a powerful frame. This is primarily due to the desire to ensure better safety of the glass.

Having examined the greenhouse described above, someone may doubt its resistance to loads. Their doubts are understandable to us, because the individual elements assembled into a single whole represent, at first glance, an unreliable structure.

  • Your fears are completely unfounded.
  • A greenhouse constructed in this way is very durable.
  • By using glass in its covering, it can be called a greenhouse made of glass and wood.
  • But the use of glass in this design is completely unprofitable, not because of the strength of the structure, but because of the complexity of installing the glass covering on this frame.
  • Modern wooden greenhouse designs are durable and reliable structures.
  • Building greenhouses from wood is sometimes preferable to constructing greenhouses from other materials (or).

New projects under wood
