The island of Koh Phangan in Thailand is a paradise, often called the Ibiza of Asia. It is included in the Samui archipelago and is located approximately 56 kilometers from the mainland and 16 from the main island of the archipelago - Koh Samui. About 70-75% of the island's territory is occupied by jungle and mountainous terrain, and the rest is azure beaches and coconut plantations. Reviews of the island's beaches say that these are the best places to relax in Thailand.

How to get there from the capital city of Bangkok?

Getting to the island is quite easy, but only with transfers. First you should fly to Bangkok (the capital of the Kingdom of Thailand), and then fly around the country. The best airports to land from Bangkok Airport are those in Koh Samui and Surat Thani. Next, you will have to travel by water, since air service to Koh Phangan is not established.

Samui and Surat Thani airports accept only domestic flights from Bangkok and other cities in Thailand, so you will have to visit Bangkok in any case.

If you went from Bangkok to Koh Samui, then you can get there by ferry. The journey will take no more than an hour, but everything greatly depends on the chosen carrier. The most in a fast way To get from Samui it is considered to rent a speed boat, but this pleasure costs from 150 dollars.

Getting from the airport to Surat Thani is not so easy, since you will have to take a bus straight away, then cross the remaining distance by ferry. The journey takes about 2 hours, but is very cheap - about $10 per person.

The cheapest way to get to Koh Phangan is to buy a bus ticket from Bangkok Airport and then take a ferry. Tickets are sold jointly and will cost approximately $35-$40 in total.

Rail travel from the center of Bangkok to Suratami will cost about 700 baht, and then you will again have to travel by bus and then by ferry.

Weather on Koh Phangan island. Seasons

The island is ready to welcome holidaymakers all year round, but still here, like other resorts in Thailand, it has its own weather, the peculiarities of which should be known before you go on vacation.

The rainy season occurs in two stages. The first begins in September and continues until mid-December. The weather at this time is not always pleasing to vacationers. So, in October and November the most falls a large number of precipitation, but by the beginning of December the weather begins to improve. The second stage of the low season runs from April to early June. At this time there is not much rainfall, and the sun is gentle and warm, but the water level in the sea and its purity leave much to be desired. Those who have read reviews about the famous Full Moon Party and are in a hurry to attend it have nothing to worry about, just like those who came to see the sights. If your goal is a beach holiday, we recommend that you refrain from traveling to Thailand to visit Samui or Koh Phangan.

Most favorable time For beach holiday– this is the high season, i.e. the time from mid-December to March, when the weather is conducive to relaxing by the water, sunbathing and all kinds of entertainment.

More attractions of Koh Phangan

A worthy successor to Spanish Ibiza and Crimean Kazantip is Thai Phangan (Ko Pha Ngan). This island in the South China Sea has become popular around the world thanks to the Full Moon Party, which takes place every month on the full moon on the five-kilometer Haad Rin beach. A few days before the full moon, progressive youth from all over Europe, the USA, Australia and Canada come here. Alcohol lovers will appreciate the sale of cocktails in a bucket, sold at many parties (200-300 ml of strong alcohol mixed with cola, energy drink, etc.)

The rest of the time, Koh Phangan is visited by lovers of wild beauty, deserted beaches and leisurely island life, which is becoming increasingly difficult to experience in more “promoted” Thai resorts. Some of the best beaches, especially in the north of the island, are best reached by Taxi Boat, due to bad roads, or lack thereof. For those traveling for the first time, it makes sense to plan a visit to Ko Tao, or “Turtle Island” - a small island next to Phangan and, like Phangan, has its own unique charm.

How to get to Koh Phangan

The nearest airport is Koh Samui, which receives flights from Bangkok, Phuket, Pattaya, Singapore, Chiang Mai and Kuala Lumpur. From there you can get to the island in 15-50 minutes, depending on the carrier company.

In addition, visitors and residents of Koh Phangan can use the airport, which is located on the mainland - Surat Thani. It receives surprisingly cheap flights from Bangkok (1000-1500 THB if purchased in advance, 1800-2500 THB on the day of departure) with AirAsia and Nok Air. The only inconvenience: the journey from the airport to the island involves traveling by bus and boat.

The fastest and most expensive way to get from Samui to Koh Phangan is by individual high-speed boats (the easiest way to find them is at the Big Buddha). They depart at least 3 times a day and dock directly at Haad Rin Beach. In addition, ferries depart several times a day from the Samui beaches of Maenam and Nathon and land near the town of Thong Sala.

The most economical one is to buy a bus ticket back in Bangkok, at the Sai Tai Taling Chan bus station, which already includes ferry transportation (about 1500 THB one way). In this case, the boat will sail from Chumporn through Koh Tao Island.

Prices on the page are as of July 2018.

The best beaches of Koh Phangan

The most famous and longest sandy beach is the famous and crowded Haad Rin in the southeastern part of the island, which celebrates the full moon. Lovers of silence can take a boat on it and go to neighboring Haad Yuan, Haad Tian and higher to the east - there secluded small sandy coves alternate with the rocky coast.

The best sandy beaches east - Ton Nai Pan and, of course, the amazing Tan Sadet with the waterfall of the same name - favorite place holiday of King Rama 5, one of the most revered in Thailand. Time seems to have no power over this place - in photographs from twenty years ago you will see a sunny “today”, looking at the river at lunch you will notice a huge monitor lizard, and the bungalows still do not have air conditioning, a hot shower or even round-the-clock electricity (due to savings on diesel electricity). In Thon Nai Pan, on the contrary, there are the most fashionable hotels on the island with large swimming pools, modern spa centers, and other attributes of La Bella Vita.

Half Moon & Black Moon, Full Moon, Shiva Moon family, Jungle expreience, Pool party - this is not far from full list parties that take place on the island.

In the north, sandy Chaloklam and Bottle Beach are especially popular (you can get there by boat from Chaloklam, or walk 5 km).

Well, in the west you can’t miss the coral Mae Haad and the mini island of Ma - the best place on Koh Phangan for snorkeling. We also recommend visiting Haad Yao, Haad Chao Pao and Voktum - the sunset here is especially beautiful.

Beaches in the south although not the best option for swimming, but also have a special “lazy” atmosphere and charm. Lovers of joyful beach dogs will especially delight these places - there are many of them here!

Diving in Koh Phangan

Koh Tao

This islet north of Koh Phangan is even smaller than its neighbor. The main reason why tourists come here is the amazingly clear water and rich underwater world. Visibility off the coast of Koh Tao is much better than that of neighboring Samui and Phangan, and the bays where the island's beaches are located are bordered by cliffs with caves and grottoes.

You can get to this wonderful island using the same routes as to Phangan. The only difference is that it is more convenient to get to it through Chumpon, since the vast majority of ferries going from there to Phangan make a stop at Koh Tao. But ferries from Koh Samui are just the opposite: first they stop at Koh Phangan, and only then go to Tao.

Ko Nang Yuan

Half a kilometer from Ko Tao there is another small island - Ko Nang Yuan. It's not even really an island, but three atolls connected by sand spits. In addition to its silence and beauty, the island attracts scuba diving enthusiasts and especially novice divers, since there are practically no currents near the island.

There is only one hotel here, and the island is essentially its territory: at night, only guests of this hotel are allowed to stay on Ko Nang Yuan. During the day, tourists come to the island as part of excursion groups, so to visit Ko Nang Yuan, you need to either buy an excursion or come to Ko Tao first: here you can take a minibus that goes to Nang Yuan twice per day (fare 150 THB), or by taxi boat, which costs twice as much. However, if a room in the only hotel in Nang Yuan is not booked, you will have to leave the island at 17:00.
