Material selection
There are no special restrictions on the material. The only thing that remains unchanged is the base on which the decorations will be glued. It should be dense, strong and not get wet from glue. Thick cardboard and, of course, wood work well for the frame. Moreover, the wooden frame itself is already a completed craft. It can be varnished and will be appropriate for any interior.You can decorate the product with any available means. This could be pasta, pebbles, clothespins, buttons, beads. But do not forget that the chosen material should complement the picture. Let's look at the two main materials from which frames are most often made - wood and polyurethane foam.
Wooden frame
The tree is classic material, from which picture frames are made. Such designs are durable and fit almost any picture and room design.

What you need:
- Wooden plinth. Its length and width should correspond to the size of the picture. Therefore, be sure to measure the picture before buying a plinth and do not forget that the frame will be longer than the canvas.
- Well sharpened knife.
- Scissors.
- Sandpaper.
- Furniture glue. PVA will do.
- Hacksaw.
- Small nails.
- Hammer.
- Ruler. It would be better if it was angular.
- Cardboard or plywood.
What to do:
For a richer look, you can use carved wooden baseboards. Their price corresponds to their appearance, so you will have to pay a decent amount for such material for the frame, but upon completion of the work it will be worth it.
Polyurethane foam frame
For women, “polyurethane foam” sounds threatening, but there is no need to be afraid, because it is ordinary polystyrene foam, only stronger. Ceiling plinths are made from it, which are now used to renovate apartments. Their price is low, but the variety of patterns is impressive. There is no difference in manufacturing with wooden baseboards. But don’t forget that this is not wood, so you should handle polyurethane foam more carefully. Any blow can lead to dents, or even break the entire structure.
What you need:
- Ceiling plinth.
- Hacksaw or sharp knife.
- Glue.
- Ruler.
- Plywood or cardboard (depending on the size and strength of the catrina).

How to do it?
First you need to print out the frame template. It looks like this:
If you don't have the opportunity to make a printout, then make a template for a homemade paper frame with your own hands. To do this, you need to place a photograph in the center of the sheet and trace its outline (or simply draw a rectangle of the appropriate size in the center of the paper). Then set aside strips of different sizes (alternating strips 1.5 cm and 1 cm wide). Make indentations at the top and bottom as shown in the template.
The short sides are folded first, followed by the long ones. We need to insert the corners of the long sides of the paper frame into the corners of its short sides to secure the structure tightly.
If the paper is very thick and glossy, it makes sense to insert the photo first, and only then fold the sides. This way it will “sit” tighter. If you are worried about the design, you can drop a little glue or use double-sided tape.
Paper photo frames often also include drawings or cards with your favorite motivational quotes.

I decided to write this post because for a long time ago I made my first soft photo frame, and more recently I repeated the experiment and the result was more than pleasing to me. Today I will share with you the secrets of its creation, and also show you what other types of photo frames you can make yourself using improvised materials.
How to make photo frames with your own hands: master classes
Children's photo frame "Totoro" ("PhotoFrame")
We’ll start with a cute children’s photo frame inspired by the wonderful anime “My Neighbor Totoro” (if you haven’t watched it, be sure to check it out, you won’t regret it).
You will need:
- soft stretch fabric (fleece (example - green fabric in the photo), minky fleece, velsoft, thick knitwear, etc.)
- thin fabric for the backdrop (cotton, fleece, etc.)
- padding polyester (canvas)
- plastic base (from under equipment, sweets, etc.)
- threads, needles, scissors, accessories for decoration.
There should be enough plastic base to fit three pieces the size of the desired photo frame.
First of all, you will need to cut out a plastic base (round, square, triangular - whichever you like best) similar to the one shown in the photo. IN in this case It's a flat bagel. Cut out several parts from padding polyester of the same shape. I will show a master class using a circle as an example.
You will also need 1 more piece made of soft stretch fabric, but with large seam allowances.
Attention! Do not skimp on fabric allowances; they should be approx. 2/3 from the width of the ring so that the fabric is evenly distributed at the back.
We immediately proceed to the most important part - stitching the front part. To do this, make small cuts on the inside of the circle (in the area of the allowances) and sew the edges, pulling them with threads as close to each other as possible. (I specifically chose a contrasting thread color so that it would be noticeable).
Advice. If you have chosen rectangular shape, then you are unlikely to need cuts; you can try to make them without them.
This is what the ring looks like from the front. If you wish, you can hide the seams at the back using an overlay made of thin fabric (I’ll show you how to do this a little later).
Set the ring aside. Cut two circles from thin fabric and plastic (you won't need one yet). Make the fabric circles a millimeter or two larger than the plastic ones.
Sew the fabric circles together, leaving room for turning and inserting the plastic backing.
After stitching, turn the fabric part inside out, insert a plastic circle and sew up the remaining hole.
We received the back of the photo frame.
If desired, sew a loop of thread or ribbon into it so that you can hang the photo frame on the wall.
This is how I masked the back of the fluffy bagel. To do this, I cut out the same element from thin fabric as from stretch fabric, but now I made smaller seam allowances and hid them inside, sewing the disguise with a hidden seam. Sew the back with the same seam.
Sew the backdrop so that later you can insert the last plastic circle and photo on top.
Try to make small stitches so that they are not noticeable after sewing the parts together.

Now insert the plastic circle into the photo frame.
Ready! All that remains is to insert beautiful photo and add decor)

In fact, you can use regular cardboard if you fold it into the shape of a lid like this. As you can see, the creation process is simple: just take the lid and cover it with beautiful scrapbooking paper.

Cardboard and clothespins

The method of creation is very similar to the very first one, with the exception of a couple of differences: here, pressed cardboard is used as a basis (I think you can take a ready-made frame of a simple shape) and this souvenir has a leg, rather than a hinged mount.
Felt

From scrap materials or how to decorate a photo frame
Walnut
An interesting idea is to use pecan (if I'm calling it correctly) for the finish. In our area, it is quite possible to replace them with ordinary walnuts.

For the next two types you will need a lot of plugs from wine bottles. In the first case, it is proposed to prime a simple wooden photo frame, and then cut out floral patterns from the corks.
But in the second case everything is much simpler - you just need to glue the plugs along the edge. Great option a present, say, for dad on February 23rd.
Polymer clay and just little things
Sculpt well from polymer clay? Or do you just have a lot of beads, buttons, etc. accumulated at home? Then feel free to put them to use - glue them to a frame of a simple shape.

Materials for work
Before you do the most interesting thing - decorating your work, you will need to prepare the basis for the future original photo frame. You can buy it in the store, but we will also create it with our own hands.
If you decide to use wood, plastic, or other material for the base, the process will be similar to that described; we will consider making the base using cardboard as an example.
First, you will need to cut out two identical rectangles (or another shape) from cardboard; for this, use a ruler or stencil, a pencil and a stationery knife. Do not use scissors, this will ruin the cut.
The middle of one of the prepared figures is cut out; this will be the outer side of the frame, so the shape and size of the inner rectangle depends on the photo that you plan to insert.
It is important to note that it is advisable to cut the window slightly less photos so that it stays inside and does not fall out.
A loop or a leg is attached to the second rectangle, depending on how you want to position the frame. The leg can be attached by gluing its edge to the base and making a bend, or on a small hinge similar to a door, this way you can increase the durability of the product, the leg will not break over time. The material should be dense and not bend from the weight of the future frame.
Decoration options
You can decorate an original frame with almost anything, you only need your imagination. Now that the base is ready, you can take the frame itself with a photo window and start creating.
Application from scrap materials
For this type of decor, you can use colored chipped eggshells, pistachios or sequins. You will get an interesting stained glass effect from which any drawings can be created.
First, you can paint the future frame or cover it with a suitable film. It is better to use acrylic paint; it will not stain surrounding objects and will lay down in a nice, even layer;
Then the shells are crushed or just pistachios, sequins are taken, shells are also suitable. Can be pasted over outside them both in random order and creating the necessary relief or pattern.
The main thing is not to spare the material and arrange it tightly. If the decor will be painted, it is better to do it in advance, it is more convenient and the appearance will be more presentable.

Decorating with wallpaper or paper

For example, a nautical frame can be made from blue rolls, complemented by small light ropes, like on ships, and decorated on top with several shells or ready-made elements for anchors or steering wheels.

Shutdown
