Today, this function is performed to some extent by the ISS (which, by the way, not the only space station - the Chinese launched a second Tiangong last year, next year they plan Tiangong-3, and then a permanent modular space station).

It seems to me that the development of manned cosmonautics in the future, nevertheless, largely depends on how this area can be transferred from a purely public sector to a private one that pays off through the same space tourism. In principle, even now the demand for space tourism is quite large, given the huge prices and the small number of places, and the reduction in price and its transformation into a more mass phenomenon will also entail the rapid growth of related technologies. Therefore, Space X and Virgin Galactic are doing everything right, and let's hope that they will succeed. Apart from space tourism, no one cancels the coverage of space flights as a kind of show, i.e. closer fusion with the entertainment industry - something similar, by the way, was done by the Americans with flights to the moon. Good marketing, good PR in this sense are certainly important for work in this area.

A similar story was with computers. In the early 1940s, IBM President Thomas Watson famously said, "There is a market for about five computers all over the world." 80 years after that, computers are ubiquitous, mainly due to their cheaper, usability and functionality growth - and the transition of their development to a predominantly private sector. Space flights in this respect, it seems to me, are not much different. And, as with computers, the industry needs both engineers and charismatic humanist visionaries like Steve Jobs.
