What trees to plant for design. Fruit trees and shrubs for the garden. Rules for the placement of fruit trees and shrubs in the garden

Any, even the most beautiful house looks unattractive if it stands on an untidy plot. This picture is created by randomly planted trees and shrubs. Sometimes they look like an impenetrable windbreak, and sometimes they make me sad and spoil the mood with their stunted appearance, dry, dying branches. The reason lies not at all in the fact that the plantings are not cared for, but in the fact that mistakes were made in the formation of the garden. Let's try to understand the intricacies of growing a wonderful garden.

Where to begin?

Some believe that the main thing is to buy healthy seedlings, attach them to the site and water them abundantly. It turns out that everything is not so simple. In order for the planted trees to grow well, you first need to find out a number of characteristics:

Soil type (sandy, loamy, clayey, how much humus is in it, what acidity);

Availability and depth of occurrence (pipes, cables);

Estimated plan for future developments;

proximity to groundwater;

landscaping goals.

If priority is given to obtaining a crop, naturally, you need to pick fruit trees.

If the focus is on the creation of recreation areas on the site, visual leveling of the relief, hiding any defects, and so on, ornamental plants are ideal. There are also types of fruit trees that have a very beautiful, sometimes bizarre shape, for example, mulberries with a weeping, umbrella or fountain crown. They will bring the harvest, and the site will be given a peculiar design.

What to plant?

When creating an orchard, it is advisable to give preference to plants acclimatized in the area. Exotic, even perfectly planted trees, with maximum attention to them and care, will grow poorly. This applies not only to southern figs, pomegranates, citrus fruits, which in the temperate continental climate zone can only live in greenhouses. Even walnuts, peaches, cherries, apricots have their own distribution area and in more northern regions they either freeze in winter or simply do not keep up with ripening. In the southern regions, on the contrary, lovers of coolness, such as sea buckthorn, do not take root well. Birch, willow, and spruce suffer in a hot climate.

But especially in this regard, shrubs are capricious. But there are generalists who feel great everywhere. This tree has a lot of advantages and the same number of varieties, from dwarf mountain pumilio, gnome, mugus to fifty-meter

Evergreen or deciduous

Often, landscaping is carried out not to obtain crops, but solely to create beauty. In these cases, the owner also faces the question of which trees to plant on the site, evergreen or deciduous. Both of them have a number of advantages and disadvantages. So, evergreen conifers bloom faded, grow slowly, their year-round identical appearance can begin to tire. But under them in the fall there is practically no garbage, and the needles fill the air with therapeutic phytoncides. Most of the deciduous trees bloom beautifully, in autumn their foliage glows with fantastic colors, but in winter the trees take on a somewhat depressing appearance. Alternatively, there are deciduous ones with beautiful branches in yellow, white, orange and red that look bizarre even without leaves. There are also deciduous ones, decorated with bright tassels of berries all winter. This is the well-known mountain ash, candy, lilac.

maintaining distances

If the plot is large, the question of the distance between seedlings is not acute. If the area of \u200b\u200bthe site is small, it will not work to attach a lot of things to it. In order for the planted trees to develop well and not interfere with each other, it is necessary to maintain certain distances between them. In addition, seedlings must be placed correctly in relation to any buildings and communications. Each gardener must imagine what size the tree he has acquired will be in an adult state. You need to take into account the height, width of the crown, the power of the root system.

The parameters for the main types of trees can be summarized in a table.

Light and shadow

Plants are light-loving and shade-loving, which must be taken into account when placing them on the site. In addition, when laying an orchard, it is necessary to place tree seedlings, taking into account their biological characteristics of fruiting, so that the tree does not have to be treated with pesticides during the flowering period of its neighbor. Varietal characteristics also need to be taken into account so that unwanted cross-pollination does not occur. In the northern side of the plot, apple and pear trees are good, in the southern side - cherries, apricots, peaches. Medium-sized and dwarf crops are planted in the center so that they do not obscure the rest of the trees with their crown. Among ornamental plants, most plants love light.

This is a chic golden rain beaver, and maples, and junipers, and pines. Magnolia, mountain ash, pine and spruce feel good in the shade.

Compatibility

There are a variety of fruit and ornamental trees, photos and names of which can be found in the special literature. But when choosing plants for your garden, you need to know if they get along with each other. The fact is that each tree has its own energy, which favors some green brothers and suppresses others. Single trees, next to which almost everything grows poorly, include walnut, white acacia, chestnut, viburnum, fir.

How to arrange the trees on the site depends on the chosen design. Fruit trees are most often planted in rows (linearly). The distances between the lines are maintained at least 5-6 meters. You can also arrange seedlings in a checkerboard pattern. In this case, the rows are allowed to be slightly closer, but not less than 4 meters. When constructing a hedge, low-growing trees are used, rather like bushes. The distance between them must be at least 1 meter. In group plantings between tree seedlings, they stand from 2 meters, and shrubs - from 50 cm to 1.5 m (depending on the type of plant). If an open alley is planned, rows of trees are placed no closer than 6-12 meters so that the crowns do not close in the future. When constructing an arched alley (berso), seedlings are placed at a distance of 3-5 meters from each other.

Planting seedlings

Many beginner gardeners ask about how to plant a tree correctly. There are several recommendations here. Firstly, it is desirable that the seedling be young, because special equipment will be required to plant (transplant) an adult tree. Secondly, it is better if the tree is purchased with a clod of earth. With bare roots, the plant always takes root worse, and in some species, such as pine, the roots die off without soil within half an hour. Planting begins with digging a hole twice as wide as the coma of seedling earth. The depth should be such that the root collar is on the surface. A little fertilized earth is poured at the bottom, a peg is hammered. In some cases, arrange drainage from small pebbles or branches. A seedling is placed and sprinkled with earth so that there are no air voids (tamped). Abundantly watered. Early spring and mid-autumn are considered the optimal time for planting. Only adult conifers are planted in the ground in winter.

Decorative shrubs for summer cottages, photos and names of which will be presented in this article, are often exactly those elements that harmonize the overall picture and emphasize the necessary nuances of the site so that it looks attractive, bright and harmonious. They are like strokes on a canvas, which will help to correctly “dilute” the flowerbeds with the necessary details, to place accents on some specific places. I am sure that every summer resident, gardener, owner of a personal plot wants to do everything correctly and accurately so that vegetables, fruit trees, beds with greenery - everything is in its place.

Depending on the size of your site, imagination and general preferences, ornamental shrubs can be a backdrop for other plantings, an element of garden compositions, appear as hedges or act as the main nuance to which everyone's attention will be riveted.

In this article I would like to talk about the most popular shrubs, most often planted in our region, and, of course, the most beautiful. It is unrealistic to cover the entire spectrum of these representatives of this plant kingdom, but it is worth paying our attention to the main flowering ones, as well as to decorative and deciduous ones.

How beautiful to plant ornamental shrubs: the main placement criteria

The very first thing is to choose just such a plant that will feel comfortable in the climatic conditions of your region. It is necessary to choose a certain variety based on this factor. The second nuance is its location.

If you get a sun-loving representative, then you need to plant it in a sunny place, where there will be a lot of light and there will not even be a hint of shade. But shade-loving ones, on the contrary, should be placed in shaded areas, or even in the shade of buildings or large trees. This is important, as the wrong choice of location can affect not only the brightness of the colors of the foliage or the lushness of the flowers on the shrub, but also its viability.

The overall picture of the garden should also be considered when choosing a particular plant. In a small area, tall and lush specimens will look out of place. But, for example, blooming frost-resistant, low beautiful bushes fit perfectly, and even will delight you with their appearance until the very cold.

These representatives include dwarf varieties of juniper Cossack Tamariscifolia and Green Carpet - undersized, creeping along the ground, very frost-resistant. These are ideal options for creating compact alpine slides, rockeries, lawn edging, curbs.

Shrubs for hedges should also be chosen among undersized or medium-sized representatives with a dense crown, so that later instead of an attractive fence you do not get columns of tall thickets. Spiked bushes, decorative flowering, columnar representatives, for example, junipers, are best suited for such a design. For joint plantings, weigela, buddleia, spirela, oleander are well suited, they will look harmoniously with other green brothers growing nearby. And if you want to form an arch or, for example, decorate a gazebo, a fence, then in this case you should choose climbing species.

The choice is wide! For each site of any size and shape, you can find your own option. In addition to flowering plants, there are a lot of varieties of shrubs with amazing foliage color, with an unusual crown, leaf shape. Diversity is an important aspect in this business. In most cases, the country landscape is divided into three zones (or tiers): the lower one is vegetable beds and flower beds, the upper one is fruit trees. But the bushes can occupy the so-called middle zone. The correct selection and combination of plants among themselves is the main goal for a summer resident who strives for beauty, comfort and harmony in his area.

Deciduous or flowering shrubs are not only a pleasure for contemplation, but also functional plants. Thus, by planting them near the fence, you can create a barrier from prying eyes or unwanted penetration (spiky varieties).

With their help, it is very convenient to zone a site, for example, to separate recreation areas and an area for growing garden crops.

Borders, paths, hedges, which have already been mentioned, creating protection (shadows) for more delicate shade-loving plants, decorating some unsightly fragments on the site - all this can be arranged, decorated or hidden using a variety of bushes and bushes. And if you decide to plant fruit representatives, you will be additionally rewarded for your work with useful berries.

Flowering shrubs for a summer residence

Some of these representatives are also fruit, this nuance will be indicated in the description.

Weigela

I'll start, perhaps, with flowering weigela. This shrub looks great both during flowering and after it. Nana Variegata can also be classified as an ornamental leafy variety, its foliage has a beautiful golden border, and Nana Purpurea has dark, red-brown leaves.

Weigela Nana Purpurea

The sight of a blooming weigela pleases the eye with pink bell flowers that bloom in waves throughout the season (usually all of May). The first wave is the most abundant. Some varieties can produce color twice a year, such as Weigela Middendorf.

Weigel Middendorf

Spirea

Spirea is very unpretentious and very beautiful. Its varieties can bloom both in spring and summer. If you calculate the time correctly, then you can plant these two species in such a way that one fades, and the second only enters the flowering phase. Some varieties of spirea have beautiful foliage - Vagnutta, Pink Ice. For this reason, they can be attributed to decorative deciduous shrubs.

Spirea Vangutta

Spirea blooms profusely and luxuriantly, leaning branches literally plastered with white flowers to the very ground.

A low, slow-growing Japanese spirea blooms with lush lilac-pink inflorescences. She is also attractive and a honey plant, like her white-flowering species.

Spireas are not particularly capricious about the choice of soil, however, you should pay attention to the requirements for light / shade for different varieties.

Jasmine or mock orange

Garden jasmine or mock orange - well, how could it be without it ?! Because of the enchanting aroma, it is known and loved by almost everyone. To date, there are its multiple varieties and hybrids - all of them are very attractive. They differ in size, shape, color and aroma of flowers.

But in our case we are talking about a white-flowered representative - frost-resistant, disease-resistant, very unpretentious (can be placed in the shade or in a place lit by sunlight). It looks equally great in group plantings and in single ones, the main thing is to water it on time, but do not allow water to stagnate in the near-stem circle. The flowering time of the mock orange depends on its variety, but it usually begins in May and lasts about a month. There are those that bloom both in summer and in early autumn.

viburnum

Kalina refers to both fruit specimens and decorative foliage. A unique plant in every sense: it blooms beautifully with large white spherical inflorescences, the berries are useful, they are widely used as a medicine. The foliage also deserves attention: its hue changes from rich green to golden and red.

In general, viburnum has many species (about 200), among which you can even find evergreen specimens. In our area, two of its usual types are the most common and popular - viburnum ordinary and viburnum bulldonezh. They are frost-resistant, non-capricious, decorative at any time of the year, they love shade and moderate watering. Flowering time - mid-May / end of June, about 20 days.

Rose hip

Some shrubs that can grow in the country do not even need introduction and recommendations, for example, wild rose. It is attractive in appearance, useful in many ways, not only decorates your site in the spring when it blooms with pink or red flowers, but also creates a prickly barrier if you plant it along the fence. In some of its varieties, flowers are not inferior in beauty to roses (terry look), and varieties with healing red berries will give you a natural natural “medicine”, the valuable qualities of which are known to everyone. Rosehip is unpretentious, branches quickly, has a very dense crown, prefers the sun or partial shade. It blooms from May to August.

Lilac

Fragrant, having many colors and shades - lilac! Without it, it is difficult to imagine a summer cottage or a local area, whether it is a private or multi-storey building. Lilac is a fairly large (up to 2, 3 or more meters in height) shrub. Even in a small area, at least one bush, but you can plant. There are many different varieties of lilac.

It is resistant to cold, unpretentious, beautiful in itself (good in a single landing). It is preferable to place it in a sunny place, but the lilac will feel comfortable in partial shade. When landing, leave free space around her so that she is not crowded. Flowering time is May, some stretch until June.

forsythia

Flowering forsythia shrubs are the real "suns" on your site! It blooms in early spring with bright yellow bells, and the foliage on the shrub appears after the flowers have fallen off. The time of abundant flowering lasts about three weeks.

This is a heat-loving representative, which maximally shows its decorative effect in the warm regions of our country. It looks great as a single plant or surrounded by bulbous flowers. Suitable for the formation of hedges, does not like waterlogged soil, drafts and cold winds. Prefers light fertile soil, for the winter it is better to protect it with covering material. Its other name is forsythia. Forsythia bushes are medium in size, suitable for small areas.

Hydrangea

There are shrubs that grow and bloom where many others refuse to develop and give color. It is to such specimens that the hydrangea belongs, which prefers shade and moist soil. This frost-resistant shrub blooms in large snow-white, lilac, pink, blue, purple "balls". If you cut a hydrangea flower and put it in a vase, it will last long enough.

Hydrangea is characterized by long flowering, which begins around July and continues until early autumn. Some varieties, such as "Freudenstein" bloom until October inclusive. This is a non-capricious plant that feels good even on acidic soil, which most flower and garden representatives do not like so much. Can be used in single plantings, but also harmoniously looks in the company of rhododendrons, clematis, lilies, roses, all kinds of hostas, fern varieties.

Budley David

Buddleya is a fairly popular shrub among gardeners recently. Its blue, lilac, pink, slightly elongated inflorescences consist of multiple small flowers that exude a magical sweet aroma. This plant can reach 3 meters in height, blooms for quite a long time, from mid-July to the second half of September. Due to some external similarity, it is sometimes called autumn lilac.

It looks attractive in a single landing on the lawn, as well as in the company of cinquefoil, low-growing ground cover roses. It is also good as a tub plant, only the capacity for it should be large. Thus, by placing a buddley in a voluminous flowerpot, you can decorate a terrace or a place near the stairs, the entrance to the room. Likes sunlit places, drained fertile soil, does not like drafts and windy areas.

action

A relative of hydrangea and mock orange is action, it is distinguished by abundant and long flowering (from 30 to 60 days). If you plant it in partial shade and protected from drafts, it will bloom in densely growing white-pink or snow-white (depending on the variety) racemose inflorescences starting around June.

Most varieties of deutsia are tall flowering shrubs that can reach 4 meters in height. Looks great in the form of a hedge and in single plantings.

Japonica

In fact, there are a great many flowering shrubs; alas, it is simply impossible to describe them all in one article. Many of them combine the beauty of flowering and the taste of the fruit, such as Chaenomeles (or Japanese Quince), which grows to 2 meters or more, blooms with bright, eye-catching red flowers. Subsequently, it gives edible fruits, ranging in size from 3 to 6 cm.

Broom

Very handsome and popular. Depending on the variety, it blooms with "moth" flowers of different shades. This representative is so unpretentious that he will feel comfortable even on poor soil. Resistant to drought and cold, unpretentious, looks great in single and group plantings. This honey plant is often planted on slopes.

The broom blooms for about 30 days, it can be of different heights, again, depending on the variety.

tree peony

It is impossible not to mention the tree-like peony, whose luxurious beauty will become a true decoration of your site.

Rhododendron

Also, rhododendron is a garden favorite among southern summer residents; with the onset of spring, this shrub is simply buried in pink, lilac, purple, red flowers-bouquets.

Decorative deciduous shrubs for the garden

This is a separate category of shrubs, without which, often, not a single suburban area can do. As in the case of flowering varieties, it will not be possible to talk about all worthy specimens in one article, but it is worth focusing your attention on individual representatives. Decorative deciduous shrubs in most cases do not require special care, a separate plus is their longevity. Having planted a bush once, creating comfortable conditions for existence, it will be possible to admire it for many years.

Red Japanese Maple

If you like a riot of red shades, then you should definitely plant a red Japanese maple on the site. This is a shrub with a voluminous crown, its foliage at first has a bright green color, then, closer to autumn, it becomes reddish-orange and eventually turns into a bright red, carmine hue.

In fact, there are many varieties of Japanese maple, each of which has attractive foliage in its own way. Variety "Aconitifolium" - orange-red leaves, "Vitifolium" - carmine-red leaves, one of the most popular - "Atropurpureum" has a dark red, almost black-red foliage color. They look great anywhere on the site, love partial shade, harmonize with coniferous representatives, combined with ferns, hostas.

Red Japanese Maple:

Fieldfare rowanberry

Frost-resistant Rowanberry Sam is very unpretentious, grows quickly, beautiful in bloom, but its foliage deserves special attention. Openwork leaves have an interesting feature - a gradient, a transition from one shade to another. Orange, red, yellow, pinkish, green - all these colors blend smoothly with each other on one single sheet. From a distance, it resembles a bright fire, a riot of colors is observed throughout the season, especially closer to autumn. It can be used in group plantings to hide unattractive landscape details, it grows equally well in sunny areas and in partial shade. Fieldfare is not particularly demanding on the ground, but moist, loose and nutritious soil is more preferable for it. Drought is undesirable for him.

Rowanberry Sam:

Barberry

Barberries are a separate topic, the first among them, according to their external data, stands out Barberry Thunberg with purple leaves. Even in winter, its red, thorny twigs attract attention. With the advent of spring, it blooms with reddish leaves, against which the yellow flowers look very elegant. Gradually, closer to summer, the barberry foliage becomes intensely red, and in autumn all shades of burgundy, scarlet and carmine color the entire plant.

Prefers sunny and semi-shaded places, unpretentious, but does not respond well to excessive soil moisture. The scope of application is extensive - from hedges to single plantings or planting in a flower bed surrounded by other flower representatives. Its dwarf variety is Atropurpurea Nana.

A variety of barberry Turnberg - Tiny Gold:

Variegated varieties of barberry are Rose Glow (red leaves with pink dots), Admiration with golden edging along the edges of the red leaf, Kelleris with white-green foliage, Natasza with pink-greenish-white leaves.

Barberry Admiration:

The golden-leaved barberry Golden Rocket is incredibly attractive, the greenish-golden leaves of this shrub are so bright that they are visible to the eye from afar and attract attention. They look perfect on green lawns, in the form of hedges, on mixboards among other plants.

Barberry Golden Rocket:

Barberries with golden foliage have several varieties, but all of them are distinguished by the main feature - the color of the leaves. For example, the Diabolicum barberry has a red edging along the edges of a greenish-yellow, almost golden leaf. Compact varieties of these shrubs are Tiny Gold (photo above) and Bonanza Gold.

Deren

Dören is a very attractive shrub, and at any time of the year and even completely without foliage! There are many varieties of dogwood, for example, Elegantissima with white-green leaves, Siberica Variegata has reddish-green foliage with pink edging along the edges, Kesselring boasts chameleon leaves of a brownish-pink hue with the addition of yellow and green colors.

When winter comes and the dogwood sheds its foliage, its upward shoots are bright red, clearly stand out against the white snow. It is unpretentious, shade-tolerant, frost-resistant, takes root on any soil. The maximum height of this representative is 3 meters, but red turf can grow even higher. He, of course, takes up a lot of space, but the color of his foliage is simply amazing. If you are the owner of a large plot, it may make sense to pay attention to red turf.

Euonymus

Fortune's euonymus is a rather undersized (up to 60 cm) shrub, originally from China. It has many varieties, but all of them are distinguished by a variegated, eye-catching color of foliage. It can be formed as a bush, or it can be arranged in the form of a liana, setting the direction with a rope, and there, with its aerial roots, it will cling to anything, even a wall.

Depending on the variety, the euonymus has a different color of the leaf border. For example, the leaves may be pale green with a white border, or bright green with a yellow border (variety 'Emerald Gold'). This is a frost-resistant plant, not capricious, loves moderately moistened soil, looks great as a single element or the main accent of a flower bed, in a word, it is good in any form and looks appropriate in a company that is suitable in color.

Fortune's euonymus:

vesicle

The vesicle is very interesting in that, depending on the variety, it has a completely different color of foliage. This is a non-capricious plant, however, on loose, moderately moist soil, it will feel more comfortable. It is widely used in landscape design: some varieties can be cut and given any shape, other varieties are used to create borders or hedges. He is good and attractive both by himself and in the company of other garden representatives.

I advise you to pay attention to the following vesicles: Diabolo, which has dark red, almost black leaves and looks spectacular, but a little gothic. In spring, its foliage has a lighter shade - carmine - red, but then gradually darkens. The cultivar Darts Gold, on the contrary, has a cheerful color of the leaves - yellow-fiery. And the Nugget variety changes the shade of the foliage depending on the time of the year, at first the leaves are yellow, and closer to autumn they turn green. Red-leaved vesicle is another popular species, with scarlet leaves in spring and maroon, beetroot - with the advent of cold weather.

Bubble in the country:

Talking about decorative deciduous shrubs, one cannot help but recall the Japanese spirea, which has not only beautiful flowers, but also multi-colored, bright foliage.

Heather leaves do not lose their beauty even with the advent of winter, he is unpretentious, but loves sunlight.

Shrubs that you want to choose for a summer residence should always be divided according to height, requirements (whimsical / unpretentious), frost resistance, compatibility with other plants.

Hawthorn also comes to mind, which has so many different varieties that among them any gardener can find a shrub to his taste. Any figures can be formed from hawthorn bushes, its fruits are medicinal, used in folk and official medicine. In its “behavior”, it is somewhat similar to boxwood, looks great in the design of hedges, in group plantings, as well as in a single copy.

Hedge of ornamental shrubs

A hedge is one of the most popular, interesting and favorite horticultural "structures", in which green spaces act as a "building" material. Depending on the desired result, the hedge can be arranged in the form of a low curb or, conversely, a high green wall. You can choose any shape or length of such a fence, this is a truly creative activity, almost always giving a great result. A green hedge can hide unsightly elements of a summer cottage (for example, an old fence, a fence), highlight individual zones on the territory, or emphasize other landscape design accents.

When choosing shrubs for this purpose, you need to consider the following parameters:

  1. Varieties of shrubs - in fact, the choice of plants for creating hedges is very large. It is necessary to approach the choice not only from an aesthetic point of view, but also from a practical one. These can be homogeneous shrubs or a mixed version, when different varieties and species are used that are in harmony with each other.
  2. The growth rate of plants - calculate all the nuances: how often do you visit the country house, can you cut and correct the bushes in time. Where does the shrub you choose grow (sunny or shaded) and how will it manifest itself in this area. This also includes the question of the shape of the future hedge, so that the growth rate of bushes is a very relevant issue.
  3. Height of shrubs - before the final choice, carefully study the potential of the bush and compare its capabilities with your wishes. This item also includes the density (width) of plantings, you may have to plant them in two or even three rows.
  4. Soil preparation for bushes - consider this factor, certain types of ornamental shrubs require a special soil composition. If in doubt, then choose the most unpretentious varieties or consult with more experienced gardeners in this matter. In some cases, you will have to pre-prepare the soil for the desired variety of shrubs.

If you are a beginner, give preference to non-capricious and shade-tolerant specimens that will not require daily soil moisture. Although it is the last aspect that depends on how often you visit the country. Remember that the most successful mixed hedges are obtained by planting plants with the same (or similar) biological requirements for moisture, light, soil quality, as well as with a similar growth rate.

Thuja hedge, photo:

If we consider coniferous shrubs for hedges, then dwarf forms of spruce, thuja or juniper will suit you. Such a fence will always be green, at any time of the year.

Dwarf spruce Nidiformis is unpretentious, has a bright green color, does not exceed one meter in height. Small bushes are planted at a distance of 1 meter from each other, do not make any pruning until the next season, until the spruce grows. Further, the correction is made from the sides (by two thirds of the length of the branches) and from above (cutting the upper branches by about a third of their length).

El Nidiformis, photo:

European spruce hedge:

In nature, thuja is presented not only in the form of a tree, but also a bush. It is the bushy and dwarf varieties of thuja that are used to create hedges. This plant is easy to give the desired shape and height, it emits a pleasant coniferous aroma, is always green and looks great. T ui Smaragd or Brabant are most often used by Russians to decorate green hedges. Tui seedlings are planted about 50 or 70 cm apart, and decoration and cutting are done only at 2 or 3 years of plant life. Smaragd is sheared less often, Brabant - more often, all thujas are frost-resistant, they perform well when planted in clay or sandy soil. Moderate soil moisture is the best option for them. Varieties Hozeri, Danica, Teddy, Little Dorrit are also suitable for creating hedges.

Juniper is one of the favorite, popular, easy-to-cut and care plants for decorating green hedges. He loves sunlight, resistant to drought and cold, but he should be protected from excessively moist soil (to avoid waterlogging). You should not plant it if clay soil prevails in your area. Bushes are planted at a distance of 60-80 cm from each other, a haircut is made about 2 times a year. Keep in mind that juniper grows quite quickly.

If you want to create a climbing plant hedge, and very quickly, pay attention to Aubert's Knotweed. This is one of the fastest growing liana shrubs, which reaches one and a half meters in length per season. This plant is unpretentious to the soil, often needs adjustment (pruning), blooms in dense white inflorescences and requires a pre-installed solid support.

Highlander Aubert, photo:

Hop is a shrub and at the same time a climbing vine. Unpretentious, frost-resistant, loves moist soil, does not need frequent adjustment. The plant produces very pretty medium sized buds that add to the beauty of the dense bright green foliage. He also needs a reliable and strong support and garter.

A luxurious hedge is obtained from climbing roses. Depending on your preferences, you can choose any variety with the desired shade of buds.

Graham Thomas gives yellow flowers, Adelaide d'Orleans - white buds with a yellowish center, Super Dorothy blooms with numerous lush pink buds, Alaska - a snow-white rose, delicate and at the same time solemn.

Such a hedge will definitely not leave anyone indifferent. Be prepared for maintenance and regular pruning if you choose roses, they will also need support. Shrub roses can also be used in this capacity.

Climbing rose hedge, photo:

Clematis is an ornamental shrub and at the same time a liana. This plant loves the sun, fertile drained and slightly alkaline soil. It turns into a dense fence in about 2 or 3 years, it looks very impressive thanks to large flowers of a wide variety of colors, as well as dense, rich green foliage. Requires strong support, like all creepers.

The blackthorn (or blackthorn) reaches a height of two meters, blooms with densely spaced white flowers, has multiple spines. When planting a turn to create a hedge, each bush will need to be fixed, tied to a peg. So you set the right direction for the bush, support it at first, until it gains strength. The first month after planting, seedlings should be watered regularly. Blackthorn grows very quickly, gives dark blue fruits - wild plums (tasty, slightly tart in taste).

Blackthorn, photo:

Sea buckthorn is a useful and very pretty shrub, decorative and fruit, I would say. Gardeners recommend planting shrubby sea buckthorn in two rows. Despite the fact that trimming haircut reduces the yield of sea buckthorn, the aesthetic side of the matter only benefits from this. This frost-resistant plant can be with or without thorns. Requires a pre-installed reliable support - then everything will be beautiful and even.

Snowberry is an incredibly attractive shrub. It got its name due to the snow-white fruits, which are located on the branches in the form of clusters. Even when the plant sheds all foliage, these berries persist for a long time, sometimes even until spring. The shrub itself is excellent for the formation of hedges, grows up to one and a half / two meters in height. Often does not need special adjustment, as the branches themselves tend to the ground under the weight of the bunches. If you trim the plant regularly, then it most likely will not bear fruit. The shrub is unpretentious, frost-resistant, blooms in the middle of summer with inconspicuous small flowers-bells of a white-green or pinkish hue. Berries are poisonous to humans, but for birds they are quite edible.

For hedges, it is best to choose from thick-leaved, easy-to-form plants. Such a "fence" should be tight, without so-called gaps. Depending on your preferences, you can choose a flowering or evergreen, coniferous variant.

Fruit shrubs such as Schmidt's Currant, Felt Cherry or Gooseberry are not only good for creating green hedges, but they also reward you with edible fruits.

When choosing a shrub, consider its features, resistance to cold, soil requirements. It is possible that in order to maintain an attractive appearance, some representatives will need periodic feeding and fertilizing. No matter how unpretentious the variety you have chosen may seem, maintaining a decent green hedge will require you to spend time and effort. Any shrub will have to ennoble, cut, keep in shape. Poor soil should be fed with fertilizers at least once a year, and fertile soils - once every 4 years.

The aforementioned flowering shrubs such as spirea, jasmine, lilac, rosehip can also be used to create a hedge. They can be combined with each other, planted alternately. Different varieties of barberries planted one after another (variety by variety) will create an incredible effect. Cypress shrubs (dwarf varieties) are also ideal for the formation of green "fences".

Berry Yew, which does not exceed 60 cm in height, grows in rounded bushes - it is also great for this purpose.

It all depends on your imagination and the availability of free time. Always keep in mind that taller shrubs require more space between seedlings. Do not forget also about the climatic features of your region when choosing an ornamental shrub.

Ornamental shrubs are most often planted either in the fall, before the frost hits, or in early spring, when the buds on the trees are just beginning to awaken, and the snow has already melted. Moreover, the pits for spring planting should be prepared in the fall - apply appropriate fertilizers, calculate the depth and width of the recess for a certain type of shrub. Purchase seedlings in reliable places - special nurseries or flower shops. Before deepening into the ground, the plant can be kept for several hours in water, to which a growth stimulator was previously added.

In addition to the agrotechnical features of a single species, a simple formula should be remembered:

  1. Low and dwarf representatives are buried in the soil at a distance of about 60-80 cm from each other.
  2. Plants of medium size - about one and a half meters from one another.
  3. Tall specimens that need space for development - at least 2 meters from each other.

If you are the owner of a summer house or a large private house, then for sure you were faced with the question of which trees to plant in the garden. Then this article is just for you. Today we will give you an overview of the most popular garden trees and shrubs, as well as give you tips on how to care for them. So, let's start with the most sought-after representatives of the flora.

Classification of garden trees and shrubs

Before planting a plot with certain garden plants, it is worth identifying their purpose. Traditionally there are two types:

  1. Garden fruit trees and shrubs.
  2. Garden ornamental trees and shrubs.

If you plan to use the site for harvesting, then you should opt for the first type. And the second type is suitable for those for whom the garden is a place to relax and admire nature. The following sections will take a closer look at each type of garden plant.

Fruit trees and shrubs

So, you have decided to use all the resources of the site to get a rich and tasty harvest. Then this section is for you. Let's start with a list of the most popular garden trees:

  • Apple tree. In almost every site you can find at least a couple of such fruit trees. And in order to enjoy the fruits almost all year round, plant 3 varieties of apple trees - winter, summer and autumn.
  • Pear. Juicy ripe fruits of this tree must be on your site. After all, these fruits are a storehouse of essential vitamins.
  • Cherry and sweet cherry. Due to the short ripening period and juicy fleshy berries, these are favorite crops in our country.
  • Peaches and apricots. Especially favorite trees in the southern regions of our country. Incredibly tasty jam, compotes and liqueurs - all this can be prepared from juicy and ripe fruits.
  • Plum. Traditional culture in any area. A berry from which you can make jam or prepare it for the winter in the form of dried fruits.

Fruit bushes are just as necessary on the site as trees. Be sure to place red, black and white currants. After all, you can use not only their berries, but also fragrant leaves rich in vitamin C. Gooseberries, raspberries and barberries are also popular among gardeners in almost any region. A little less often you can meet bushes of shadberry, dogwood and honeysuckle.

Combination of fruit plants

Planting a garden with fruit crops should be treated with special responsibility. After all, it is important not only to choose a variety of certain trees, as well as shrubs, but also to take into account their comfortable placement on the site. Very often, inexperienced gardeners, wanting to plant the land with a large number of crops, do not care at all about their combination with each other. But not only the quantity and quality of the harvested crop, but also the health of garden trees in general, directly depends on the rational planting of garden trees.

A special remark can be made about the walnut tree. If the climate of your region allows you to grow this plant, then be prepared for the fact that it is necessary to allocate a fairly large area for it. Due to the high content of tannins in its leaves, the soil at 18-20 m around becomes unsuitable for growing any other trees and shrubs.

Not the best neighbors will be apricots with cherries, as well as peaches with cherries. Despite the similarity of cultures among themselves, such trees should not be planted at a close distance from each other. Also, cherries do not tolerate the proximity of pears and apples.

Raspberry bushes should be planted away from apple and pear trees. Hawthorn bushes do not tolerate neighborhood with cherries.

Quite a capricious pear. In addition to cherries, it also does not coexist with cherry plums, barberry bushes and raspberries.

Caring for fruit trees and shrubs

Like any fruit-bearing crop, trees and shrubs require timely and proper care. One of the most important roles in this is the pruning of garden trees. It is thanks to her that it is possible not only to maintain the proper appearance of the plant, but also to extend its fruiting period. By carefully removing excess branches, you can achieve the appearance of gaps that will allow the sun's rays to cover more fruit-bearing shoots. And this means that you will have an increased chance of getting a rich and healthy harvest.

Removal of old plants

Sometimes, when purchasing a site, you can find old, dried trees and stumps on it. In this case, it is necessary to make a complete release of the site by sawing garden trees and uprooting stumps. Today, there are many organizations that can make your work easier. But if you want, you can clean your site yourself.

How to do it? There are no special requirements for cleaning the site from unsuitable plants. It is necessary to cut down an old tree as low as possible - this will make it easier to remove the stump. And this is simply necessary. It is imperative to remove stumps, as they are an excellent breeding ground for fungal diseases and pests.

Diseases of garden trees

Fruit trees are quite susceptible to various diseases. In this section, we will show you how to recognize these diseases and give you tips on how to deal with them.

  • Rust. It appears as numerous brownish or brown spots on the leaves and contributes to their early fall. You can fight this disease by immediately removing the infected areas.
  • Cystosporosis. With this disease, small wounds form on the tree, from which a gum-like resin oozes. This is dangerous because other diseases develop very quickly in such places. Therefore, it is necessary to remove the affected branches in a timely manner and close the damage with garden pitch.
  • Scab. A common fungal disease that affects both young shoots and ripened fruits. You can recognize this disease by greenish-brown spots that appear on the leaves and on the fruits. Fighting scab is quite simple: carefully dig the ground around a tree or bush, and also burn the foliage in the autumn.
  • Powdery mildew. It is characterized by a white powdery coating on shoots, leaves and fruits. There are other signs as well. With the progression of the disease, the growth of the shoots stops, the leaves dry out and fall off. To combat powdery mildew, spray with boiling water or a solution of soda ash.
  • Anthracnose. Most often, the disease manifests itself with high humidity and looks like brownish sores on the stems and leaves. Progressing, the disease causes the leaves of garden trees to curl and fall off. The main method of combating the disease is the timely detection and immediate destruction of infected parts of the plant.

Ornamental trees and shrubs

To create a harmonious view of the territory of your garden, it is best to seek help from a specialist in this matter - a landscape designer. It is he who will tell you the optimal combination of certain trees and shrubs that is suitable for your site. In general, planting ornamental plants comes down to emphasizing the relief of the territory and creating compositions that emphasize all the advantages of the garden.

Features of planting ornamental plants

The main principle of landscape design is planting according to the principle of tiering. This means that you should not randomly mix trees and shrubs, but plant them according to the height of the plants: from low to high or vice versa. Be sure to take into account the light and shade of the plant. Also, when creating a composition, it is necessary to pay attention to the seasonality of trees and shrubs. That is, each compositional group should perform decorative functions throughout the season.

Popular ornamental trees and shrubs for the garden

Every year the range of these plants is growing incredibly fast. We will give a list of the most popular and least whimsical trees and shrubs to care for, with which you can decorate your garden plot.

Conclusion

Today we introduced you to the most popular fruit and ornamental garden trees and shrubs, and also told you how to combine them correctly. They shared information about planting and caring for seedlings, as well as the features of removing old and unsuitable plants.

The scheme of placement of trees in the garden

When designing and laying a garden with your own hands, it is necessary to take into account the seasonality of the receipt of certain fruits. Moreover, there are a very large number of options, there are no clear recommendations.

It is desirable that all species be presented in the garden in the country. For example, 35 percent of the territory of the garden plot can be allocated for pears and apple trees. For stone fruits, allocate 45-50 percent of the land. Allocate 10 to 15 percent for grapes, and provide 10-15 percent of the territory for vegetables and berries. Again, I repeat, these are just general recommendations.

Options for placing fruit trees in a summer cottage

All buildings, vineyards, fruit trees, vegetable gardens and berry fields have the best lighting for each type of plant. The design of the site and the requirements of sanitation are also taken into account.

The scheme of laying the garden in the country

From the northwest, north or northeast side of the site

For example, peach and grapes are very fond of light. Also light-loving are plum, cherry, pear, apple tree, apricot. But blackcurrants and raspberries can grow well in the shade. Cherry is also quite tolerant of shading.

Near the house you can plant cherries, sweet cherries or peach

These crops do not need to be treated with chemicals. Plant tall and medium trees no closer than three meters from the border of your site. This requirement is due to the fact that they can create a shadow on neighboring lands. Shrubs can be planted at a distance of 1 meter from the border. Consider these recommendations and incorporate them into your garden design.

Consider altitude differences

If some part of your site turns out to be in a lowland, then I advise you to place vegetables and berry crops there, and plant trees higher. The same applies to buildings. They need to be placed on high ground.

Don't need jungle

Novice gardeners sometimes try to fit as many varieties of plants into their landscape project as possible. You don't need to do this. Otherwise, your garden will look like a jungle. Plants will be long and not prolific.

Diversity matters

It is also not necessary to plant the entire garden with one type of fruit tree. Cherry orchards are only good in books, believe me! Otherwise, after a while, even if you wish, you will not be able to plant anything else.

Therefore, I advise you to immediately add places for all crops to the site project, and even with a margin. Landscaping is best done according to the biological needs of the plants, considering the height of each species. Allocate separate places for vegetables, berries, pome and stone fruits.

Crown diameter of cherry, apple, pear, cherry, apricot and peach

Place trees on the site with a margin of space. Consider their adult size. Apple and cherry trees have a crown diameter of about 6 meters. Cherry and apricot have 5 to 6 meters. A peach has about 4 meters, and a pear has 3.5 meters. Shrubs have a crown diameter of about one meter.

In each row, the trees can slightly touch the crowns, but between the rows it is desirable to have free space - one meter.

Plan for planting fruit trees and shrubs at their summer cottage

The design project of a large summer cottage according to the principle of placement can be exactly the same, only the total number of varieties and species of fruit trees in the garden can be taken more.

All summer residents want to see their backyard landscaped and immersed in the greenery of trees. There are hundreds of thousands of different plants in the world that will be a great addition to the flowers that are planted in your garden. Shrubs, deciduous and coniferous trees will decorate your site. And if you equip an orchard next to your house, you can provide your loved ones with fresh fruits.

Features of the location of trees on the site

A garden cannot be imagined without vegetation. The green frame of the house can enliven even the most unremarkable area. It is trees and shrubs that form the basis of the vegetative design of any territory. There are several ways to arrange trees on the site.

Ordinaries

These are lonely trees that attract a lot of attention. Therefore, they must look flawless throughout the season and have no flaws. A lush shrub or sprawling tree will look especially decorative. If the site is small, then it is enough to plant only one serious tree.

Many people like the idea of having a family tree that will grow for several generations, keeping the history of the family. Having planted a Christmas tree, you will have a great opportunity to decorate it for the New Year, and the children will dance around it. If the territory is modest, you can plant a Christmas tree together in a group of other plants.

Groups

These are compositions created from several plants of different or one species. For landing in a group, select representatives of the flora according to the principle of tiering. In front of large trees, be sure to plant tall shrubs, in front of which it is desirable to place the smallest ones. To brighten up a group of plants, choose specimens with variegated leaves or beautiful flowers.

On your site, you can place a group in the center of the garden, in this case, plant the tallest plants in the middle. If the group is viewed exclusively from one side and is located near the facade of a building or fence, then the height of the plants should increase towards this building.

When planning a group, also consider the requirements of the plants. They should not obscure each other, unless, of course, you prefer shade-tolerant species. In addition, it is recommended to observe the distance between plants when planting trees and shrubs.

If you bought small plants and have no idea how big they will grow over time, be sure to ask about the parameters of certain plants. Specify the shape and diameter of the crown, the height of the tree and its growth rate. To avoid mistakes, it is also recommended to draw up a dendroplan in advance. Without it, it makes no sense to buy plants and stop by the garden center. Otherwise, chaos will come on the garden plot.

Hedges

This type of plant placement on the site is a dense linear planting of shrubs. Sometimes hedges are formed from trees. They are free growing or requiring a haircut. But in any case, they act as good protection from the wind, excessive sounds, prying eyes. Hedges enclose the site, and also divide the territory into different zones.

When choosing plants for hedges, it is recommended to consider their height. Remember that a low curb is unlikely to be made from a large tree. On the other hand, small bushes are not suitable for creating a green wall. And you should also select the leaves, because they should be of the optimal size, as in the photo of planting trees. Small forms of large-leaved specimens look ugly. It is also worth buying only winter-hardy species.

alleys

These are footpaths, which are lined with trees or shrubs on all sides. In this case, a certain rhythm is observed. As a rule, close planting of trees is practiced in the alleys: in this case, the specimens should be placed one after the other at a distance of about 2-3 m, forming a closed vault. Remember that for the arrangement of the alley you need a lot of free space, so it is not advisable to create them in small areas.

Criteria for selecting trees for planting

The entire range of shrubs and trees that are intended for planting in the country is divided into two categories. This is the main and additional material.

The main range consists of resistant species that have proven themselves over the centuries. This category includes maple, birch, willow, poplar, linden, elm, ash, larch, chestnut, oak, walnut, thuja, spruce, juniper.

An additional assortment is represented by plants that are small in size and complement garden compositions. Among them stand out mountain ash, cherry, bird cherry, apple tree, lilac, barberry, derain, cotoneaster, hawthorn.

It is recommended to select material for planting on your site, taking into account the following requirements:

  • Fruiting. If you are interested in this aspect, pay attention to berry bushes and fruit trees in landscape design.
  • Decorative. It is important to consider here that trees are decorative all the time throughout the season, or change their decorative effect. In the first case, give preference to coniferous, in the second - deciduous.
  • Plantation protection. Groups of plants on your site can protect a certain area, strengthen the soil, protect from the wind. If all this is important to you, do not forget about shrubs and climbing plants that will hide the site from prying eyes.

deciduous trees

Trees are perennial plants that have a well-defined main skeletal axis, which remains until the end of life, and the crown is formed by a bunch of large leaves, side branches and shoots. The impression of plants is created due to their shape, foliage color, smell of flowers.

  1. Bloom. The main sign of the decorativeness of a tree is its flowering. Magnolia and sakura can boast of beautiful flowers, which are usually arranged in small groups or singly to enhance the perception of the beauty of flowers. However, in most cases, trees acquire a colorful appearance only during the flowering period with small individual flowers, or inconspicuous inflorescences. This category includes maple, acacia, bird cherry, willow, chestnut.
  2. Aroma. Great value for creating a garden on your site - tree species with fragrant flowers. The smell intensifies in the evening or at night. Among the woody smelling plants, linden, bird cherry are distinguished.
  3. The timing of the flowers. Of great importance for the summer resident is the period when flowers appear on the trees. In this case, despite the homeliness of some, their early appearance is appreciated. The earliest in terms of flowering are the flowers of dogwood, hazel and goat willow.
  4. Decorative fruits. A separate group includes trees that have decorative fruits and seedlings. The red fruits of mountain ash look inimitable on bare branches after the leaves have fallen. However, do not forget that the fruits can clog your site. And poplar fluff, for example, causes allergies.
  5. Leaves. The main decorative quality of trees for landscape design, of course, lies in its leaves. Here summer residents pay attention to their color and shape. Also important is such an indicator as the duration of the growing season.
  6. Leaf color. Species that are highly branched and have a high density of leaves appear darker. For representatives with a sparse crown, the tone of the crown will appear lighter, because its inner part is visible. Splendor to your garden will give a forest beech, the leaves of which have a shiny surface. Some trees are variegated, others are silver, others are purple or gold. Such instances are best used as an accent on the site, and not as a solid background. The color of the leaves of most representatives of the flora changes during the warm season, reaching its apogee in the fall.
  7. Bark. The color of the tree bark also differs. In beech it is light gray, in birch it is white with a black vein, in alder it is black, in poplar it is green.
  8. Crown shape. Branches, leaves and trunk form a crown. It can have a different shape, which affects the created landscape. It is triangular, rounded, pyramidal, weeping, columnar. It also happens to be wrong - when the branches grow unevenly, like that of a linden, oak or maple. Often a certain shape can be obtained as a result of shearing or selection work.

The rules for planting deciduous plants are as follows:

  • To determine the place for planting trees on the site, it is necessary to take into account what sizes this species usually reaches in adulthood. Between the trees there should be a space that reaches at least half the height of an adult plant. The exception is columnar forms, which are used for hedges.
  • When choosing plants, consider their requirements. They must correspond to the climatic conditions of the site, the level of humidity, illumination, soil fertility in the country. For example, cypresses should not be planted in harsh winters, which they are unlikely to withstand.
  • Landing on time. Container-grown specimens can be planted almost all year round. However, remember that for deciduous species, autumn or spring is better when they are leafless. Seedlings that have an open root system are best planted in the fall.
  • For planting, prepare a hole with a size that is twice as big as a lump. If the soil is marshy or heavy, be sure to drain the bottom of the hole. The pit is filled with fertile soil. After that, it needs to be compacted a little and watered abundantly. Do not forget about careful tree care, timely watering and pruning.

Coniferous trees

It is recommended to select coniferous trees for planting on your site in accordance with the recommendations below:

  1. Crown shape. The crown of some conifers has a spherical shape, as it is formed by branches of approximately the same length. Often a certain geometric shape can be achieved by regular shearing of the specimen. You can plant conifers with crowns of clear forms in landscape compositions of a regular style solution, because they give the site solemnity and rigor. Trees with a weeping crown shape are popular - Nutkan cypress and European larch. The descending branches of such conifers direct the gaze downward. Therefore, it is customary to plant them in those places where you want to pay attention to the lower part of the landscape: near water bodies, in flower beds and stalls.
  2. Phytoncidal properties. Some species of coniferous trees are chosen for the landscape, as they produce essential oils. The intensity of emissions is determined by the conditions of growing trees, the time of year, and meteorological conditions. So in larch, essential oils are most fragrant in spring, and in summer they practically do not smell. The pine gives off a strong resinous odor in the heat of summer.
  3. Bark. When choosing conifers, it is important to know that the bark can add color to landscape paintings. After all, it has a different thickness, color, texture and pattern. Pine trees with old trunks or berry yew covered with reddish-brown bark look very decorative on the site.
  4. Cones. The original cones are able to diversify the phytocomposition. In pines, they hang from branches, their length often reaches 25 cm. Fir cones are directed upwards, so it looks like candles are placed on a tree. And in common spruce, young cones have a bright color - purple or reddish.
  5. Needles. Modern varieties of conifers will provide a wide palette - all shades of green, there are also golden, yellow, blue and white needles. Since Soviet times, the favorite plants for planting in front of government offices have been spruce with blue needles. Trees that have silver-blue needles, or rather cypress, fir, are very popular. Golden-yellow cypress trees of Lawson and pea-bearing, as well as thuja western and folded, are not inferior to them.
  6. Growing conditions. The popularity of coniferous trees in landscape design is also associated with their unpretentiousness and undemanding growing conditions. Coniferous trees can be picked up for almost any place. Junipers and pines prefer light, dry sandy soils, swamp cypresses - areas with high humidity, yews - shade. Most conifers are grown in open sunny areas.

Rules for planting coniferous trees:

  • Modern nurseries offer customers conifers that have a closed root system, that is, plants planted in pots. They are convenient to buy, because they do not need an urgent landing. You can plant such specimens almost all year round. However, when the ground is frozen, it is better not to plant. Consider the growing conditions of conifers.
  • Prepare a hole before planting, which is 2 times the size of the pot itself. Place the container itself in a bowl of water. This is necessary so that the earthen ball is well saturated with moisture.
  • Then turn or cut the pot, remove the plant. If the root system is strongly intertwined, cut it a little and loosen the lump. Remember that conifers cannot be deepened in the soil. After planting, water the soil around the plant.
  • It is useful to carry out mulching of trunk circles. To do this, you can use compost, mowed grass or crushed bark. Mulch retains moisture in the soil, improves the appearance of plantings, and also limits the growth of weeds.
  • Further care for conifers is to loosen the trunk circles. Also, plants need watering and fertilizing. Pruning of conifers is almost not carried out, however, it is still necessary to remove diseased and dried branches.

ornamental shrubs

Shrubs are perennial plants that reach a height of about 60-80 cm. Their main trunk stands out only at the beginning of growth, and then is lost among trunks that are equal to it. If the upper sections of the shoots of a plant die off annually, then this is already a semi-shrub. When choosing shrubs for planting in the garden, consider the following criteria:

  1. Decorative. Shrubs are considered indispensable plants in gardens that have just been planted, because the trees will not show their qualities for a long time. And shrubs, as a rule, go through their period of formation in nurseries and subsequently slightly change their size. Therefore, the general appearance of the site that you plant trees, will at first depend on the species composition of shrubs. By their qualities, there are ornamental deciduous shrubs, flowering and those that form decorative fruits, have a beautiful texture, bark color or crown shape.
  2. Bloom. In April and May, when the trees are not yet dressed in foliage, the bushes are covered with beautiful flowers. These are dogwood, forsythia, decorative plum, lilac, hawthorn, wild rose. Some shrubs have beautiful large flowers: tree-like peonies, magnolias, Syrian hibiscus.
  3. Fruit. In autumn, bright seeds and fruits come to replace flowers. This applies to hawthorns, viburnum, barberries, snowberries, wild roses. Some fruits are also edible or medicinal.
  4. Foliage. Shrubs throughout the warm season have decorative foliage. The leaves are usually green in color. In addition, they are purple, golden, yellow and variegated. The leader in the number of colored forms is Thunberg's barberry. Shrubs such as chameleon varieties are also interesting, which are able to change the color of foliage. Spiraea japonica has copper-orange leaves when young, turning green-yellow in summer and golden-orange in autumn.
  5. Bark. The shoots of some species are covered with bark, which has a bright color. It looks especially beautiful on the site in winter or early spring. Derain has shoots of a red-coral tone.
  6. Crown shape. The crown of shrubs can be spherical, sheaf-shaped, cushion-shaped and creeping. The category of ground cover shrubs is very interesting. Such plants have horizontally outstretched trunks and horizontal or ascending branches. Like many junipers, cotoneaster, euonymus. Most often, ground cover shrubs are planted to decorate slopes, create alpine landscapes and replace lawn cover if grass does not grow well on the ground.

Rules for planting shrubs:

  • Most shrubs do not require the preparation of a special substrate. It is enough to prepare the pits for landing. Fill them with garden soil mixed with compost. The exception is Heather shrubs (rhododendron, heather), which need to be planted in places with acidic soil and the addition of peat and overripe needles. Planted and watered, like deciduous trees.
  • An important manipulation for all shrubs is pruning. Immediately after planting, carry out the first pruning to strengthen the branching. Spring sanitary pruning is required when damaged, diseased, weak and old shoots are removed. Further pruning is carried out, depending on the type and timing of flowering shrubs.
  • Shrubs that are planted in hedges require regular shearing. It is usually held several times a year. Trim only young shoots that have not yet become woody.

Thus, with such a variety of trees and shrubs, you will be able to choose the necessary varieties for your site, regardless of the tree planting schemes you choose. At the same time, be sure to take into account their growth properties, growing requirements, and also carry out thorough and timely care. So your garden will look perfect!
