We continue our series of reviews of shells from major manufacturers and today we’ll talk about Flyme 6 from Meizu.
I have been familiar with the shell since the days of Meizu MX, during which time it has changed greatly in appearance several times and acquired additional functions, but the general logic of the interface has not changed, so switching from Flyme 2 to Flyme 6 will not be so difficult.
Desktops
Flyme uses a single desktop, which is also an application menu. All programs are located immediately on the home screens. This, on the one hand, encourages you to keep your smartphone in order, and on the other hand, a bunch of rare applications are also immediately on the tables. You cannot change the grid size, the default size is 4x5, in principle, this is the optimal grid for five-six-inch devices.
To make it easier for the user to organize applications into folders, he can use the “arrange” function, which becomes available with a long press. When you enable it, you can select several icons and immediately move them to a separate folder.
Dialer
Meizu has been criticized for a very long time for the lack of Russian letters in its proprietary dialer, and in Flyme 6 this problem has finally been solved, and Smart Dial support is now available in our language. The panel of a particular contact is beautiful, his photo takes up about a third of the screen, however, the synchronization of the photos is not going well, for some people they load right away good photos, some don't. However, this is most likely Google’s fault; I remember this problem back in Android 4.2.
Flyme has the ability to record all calls or just calls from your phone book. If the option is disabled, you can activate it by pressing it directly during a call.
SMS client

Lock screen

Browser
To be honest, I hardly use the browser in Flyme, since recently it has become very overloaded. Bookmarks of popular sites have been added, but they cannot be changed; below are news, and some of them are of very dubious quality. As a result, neither the night mode nor the many settings particularly encourage its use.
Music player
The player has been greatly redesigned compared to the fifth version; it has become simpler, but remains the same functional. All Meizu smartphones out of the box they can play lossless audio, not only FLAC, but also CUE+APE images. It is possible to add tracks to favorites, view the library by artist, or display it by folder, which is familiar to many.
Video player
The video player at first glance looks very simple, but in fact it supports most video formats and codecs out of the box, can play videos with several audio tracks and built-in subtitles, and the player also has windowed mode if anyone is using it. Of course, this is not an MX Player, but its capabilities are enough for the average user.
Conductor
File manager can sort files by format, but a standard tree system is also available. From the main page it is convenient to quickly jump to downloads or documents. Interestingly, File Explorer can also open and compress ZIP archives. If you wish, you can enable remote access to files from a smartphone via FTP. I regularly use this feature on Mac. You can also enable protection for a specific folder or separate file. The “Recent” tab displays the most recently added files, making it easy to get recent screenshots, photos, or recently downloaded documents.
Gallery
Flyme has a very cool gallery; in fact, it is not so much a gallery as a functional photo editor. You can apply various filters to the photo, crop it, add blur, text, blur important information and much more. I also like that with a two-finger gesture you can easily rotate a photo without even entering edit mode.
Calculator
The beauty of the Flyme calculator is that it is also a converter. Can convert currencies, convert one length measure to another, etc. You can also switch to a more advanced engineering calculator that can perform more complex tasks.
Camera
In the camera, you can quickly select one of several filters, turn on HDR or flash, and go to different modes shooting. Among the interesting things, I will highlight slow motion and shooting in GIF format. When shooting portraits, you can turn on the built-in “beautifier”, and both small edits and almost complete makeup are available.
Guest and personal modes
In guest mode, the user has access to only a few applications and does not have access to your personal data. It’s convenient to turn it on when someone asks you to use your smartphone to make a call or search for something on the Internet.
Personal mode allows you to make a hidden copy of your phone, but with some data added, such as contacts, photos or other data. I understand that personal mode has different use cases, but what immediately comes to mind is a man leading a double life :)
Game and children's modes
IN game mode you can disable pop-up notifications, activate acceleration in games, and, most importantly, you can turn off the mBack button, this is especially convenient, because sometimes in toys you touch this key with your palm.
Children's mode will help you control the time your child spends on the smartphone. In this mode, you will only have access to the applications you have selected; if the charge is low, the phone will not allow you to “lower it to zero”, and after a while it will turn off on its own if the time limit is exhausted.
Safety
This application, in fact, is a whole hub in which various optimization settings are located. There is a spam filter, a built-in antivirus, a memory cleaning system, permissions for specific applications and energy saving settings.
Meizu held a presentation at which it showed the new glass smartphone Meizu X, as well as a major update of its own shell, Flyme OS 6.
Meizu X (Meizu M3X)
The new smartphone almost completely replicates the appearance: it is the same body with glass panels on the front and back, which are connected to metal frame The device has a 5.5-inch screen with a resolution of 1920x1080 pixels. The changes lie in the hardware, in particular the device received a more advanced 8-core Helio P20 processor with a peak clock frequency of 2.3 GHz.

Flyme OS 6
There was also a presentation of the Flyme OS 6 shell, which the Chinese “developed for a long time and with difficulty.” The main changes affected appearance, not functionality, including redrawing of some standard applications. The developers clarified that they have made the interface more compact and lighter. Outwardly, it looks more like Flyme OS 6 has become a little more Material.

The final update of Flyme 6 will be released soon, which will bring improved security, different access levels, children's mode and much more to Meizu devices.
The Chinese company Meizu announced Flyme 6 at the end of 2016. In March, a stable version of the firmware was released for Chinese users, but the international version is still at the stage of public testing. It is unknown when exactly Russian users will receive the final update, but this should happen in the near future. For now, we can see what innovations are present in the public one.
Let us remind you that Flyme 6 is based on the Android 6.0 Marshmallow operating system. Despite this, the updated firmware will bring some features from Android 7.0 Nougat to gadgets, such as split-screen mode.
Design
The appearance of the firmware has changed slightly compared to previous versions. When loading, we see a new Flyme logo and a black screen background (previously it was colored White color). It can be noted that the font has become larger and more readable.
According to the company, there are more than 200 new animations that wear common name Action View. One of the most popular among users was the animation of the battery charge, under which the screen wallpaper immediately began to be drawn.
System icons also became larger and had shadows. Now, when you drag an application icon, the place where you can place it is marked square tiles. The design of the folders into which applications can be moved has also changed.
Notifications and quick settings menu

The settings icon disappeared from the right corner of the screen, and two icons appeared instead: a box and an arrow. Notifications from those applications that you have marked as unimportant are sent to your mailbox. Clicking on the arrow takes you to the quick settings menu.
Now five icons are placed here in a row, which allows you to use them more efficiently. free space. Moreover, the user can configure which actions he wants to have quick access to. Among the innovations is the ability to record from the screen.
A long press on the switch takes you to the corresponding item in the settings menu.
Multitasking menu
Previously, running applications were scrolled vertically, in new version firmware they are located horizontally. Under each program it is indicated how much random access memory she consumes.
If you pull down an application card, three options will appear: “lock” to prevent it from being closed, “secret” to blur the image in the multitasking menu, and “many” to open the program in multi-window mode. The latter feature is currently supported only by native and a few third-party applications, with other developers gradually joining.

The Security application has been changed. Now cleaning files, cache and garbage are in one section, you can activate automatic cleaning of the device memory.
It is now possible to view energy consumption statistics for 24 hours in addition to the existing options (3 hours, 6 hours, 12 hours). Thanks to this innovation, the user will finally be able to find out how much battery power the smartphone has consumed throughout the day.
A payment protection section has also been added, which blocks malicious processes during payment, including screen overlays and suspicious actions of third-party applications. This should help prevent your device from being hacked. The new feature does not yet work with all banking applications.
In general, in Flyme 6, Meizu has paid Special attention protection of user data. For example, a password protection option has appeared in the settings. After its activation, the password can only be entered on the native keyboard, since third parties can collect the entered information. In the “Special Features” tab, you can notice the appearance of children’s and game modes. In Kids Mode, you can set how long your child can use the device, turn it off when a specified battery level is reached, disable payments via SMS, and choose which apps are accessible from the Home screen.
In Game Mode, the system can detect what game you are running and adjust accordingly. In addition, here you can activate the Do Not Disturb mode, turn off the mBack key and system gestures so as not to accidentally use them during the game.
In the “Wi-Fi” section, it became possible to test the network and share access using a QR code. You can also enable the option to switch to a mobile network if the Wi-Fi connection is poor.
In the “Sound and Vibration” tab, you can now separately adjust the sound for incoming calls, messages, notifications and multimedia. It is also possible to customize the sound and vibration feedback when you press the mBack key.
Under Display, you will find four modes: adaptive, standard, photo and full color, which you can select depending on the content being displayed. However, this feature is not available on all smartphone models.
One Mind
One of the main features was the appearance of the system artificial intelligence One Mind. It tracks user activity to identify the most frequently used applications and double the speed at which they launch. In addition, One Mind allows you to optimize the performance of resource-intensive programs to improve device performance.

Camera
Perhaps, among the proprietary programs, the Cameras application has undergone the most processing. Meizu itself said that it collaborated with Arcsoft, whose algorithms are now used for image processing.
Switching between modes has become more convenient, since the most important of them - photo, portrait and video - are located at the bottom of the screen. Other modes can be accessed in the camera settings.
Other applications
Native applications have become more minimalistic and convenient. The Weather app now has a dynamic background that changes depending on the weather. The system also determines for which activities such weather is suitable and for which it is not. For example, she may advise against jogging when it rains or warn about the possibility of catching a cold on a cool day.
The “Gallery” now has the function of managing albums and viewing photos on a map.
