One of the common ways to increase living space is to build a mezzanine. Diversifying the interior layout in this way is especially beneficial in rooms with high ceilings, which are often present in old buildings and designed in new ones. A cozy office, home library, play corner or sleeping area - all this can be placed on the mezzanine. Read on to learn how to correctly implement these and other interior ideas using this architectural element.

Mezzanine dimensions

The higher the ceilings in the room, the more space will be left for the mezzanine. For example, if the mezzanine will be used as a storage room, then the minimum height of the room should be 3.2 m. Two full floors can be obtained with a ceiling height of at least 4.6 m. In any case, the functional purpose of the mezzanine is dictated by the existing height of the room.

In order to be able to move freely under the mezzanine, its height must be at least 220 cm. The same height is necessary above the mezzanine if you plan to set up a work area on it and spend a lot of time there. If there is a storage room or dressing room under the mezzanine, then a height of 180-190 cm is sufficient for them, unless, of course, there are basketball players in the family.

A sleeping place on the mezzanine will require a height above the shelf of at least 120 cm. A lower height is also possible, but comfort will not be enough. The average height of a person in a sitting position is about 1 m. Adding to it the thickness of the mattress (approximately 15 cm), we get 115 cm. Well, it is advisable that you have at least a few more centimeters left over your head, otherwise, when you get up, you can wake up a little faster than I wanted this.

As for the sleeping area on the mezzanine, you should start from the size of the mattress. A standard single mattress is about a meter wide. Double mattresses are found in widths from 140 cm to 200 cm. To this width, another 30-40 cm should be added for a solid border, on which, if necessary, you could place a mug, book or breakfast tray.

When planning a sleeping place on the mezzanine, you need to know that placing the bed near the ceiling is not very beneficial for health, since in this case air exchange near it is difficult. This is more of a necessary measure than a good solution. If you still make a bedroom on a mezzanine, then it is better that it be a two-level stepped structure. On the lower level you can stand up to your full height to, for example, change into pajamas. Under the second (high) level of the mezzanine you can place a computer desk and set up a workspace there. Under the lower level you can provide a pantry, a large closet for storing things, or build an aquarium there.

When constructing a mezzanine, the total thickness of the shelf must be taken as 20 cm. This includes the thickness of the boards, fiberboard and beams. Other design solutions are possible, but in any case, by reducing the thickness of the shelf, it is necessary to maintain its rigidity, reinforcing the structure with additional ribs.

Stairs to the mezzanine

The tiered arrangement of the mezzanine will necessarily require the construction of a staircase leading to it. This places certain requirements on the size of the room: it must have a large area, since the staircase takes up quite a lot of space. It is convenient to climb the stairs when the depth of the tread of the steps does not exceed 28 cm, and their height is 17 cm. Thus, to climb to a height of 240 cm, you will need to overcome 14 steps. This staircase will have a flight length of 364 cm.

The most comfortable is considered to be a staircase with a platform on the flight. If the size of the room does not allow you to allocate enough space for the stairs, then you will have to opt for a less comfortable attic staircase. Climbing such stairs is more or less convenient, but descending is difficult due to the unusual position of the body - facing the steps. It is not recommended to install a steep staircase, the height of which exceeds 20 cm. The best option if there is a shortage of space may be a staircase with “duck step” steps, which involve alternating left and right steps.

Mezzanine place

It is impossible to create a mezzanine in an arbitrary place. The location of door and window openings influences its choice. The mezzanine design elements should not impede access to the window or interfere with its opening. It is also necessary to take into account that the remaining part of the room must maintain ergonomics: it should not be too narrow or resemble a shaft due to its elongated shape. The effect of open space will be lost. The only window in the room must be left in the lower (high) part.

In spacious rooms with high ceilings, the mezzanine can also be of a gallery type, i.e. encircle it on three sides. On such a mezzanine you can freely place a library. In this case, its width, taking into account the bookshelves, will be about a meter. One of the sides of the gallery mezzanine can be expanded, thereby creating additional space to accommodate a reading corner. Narrow mezzanine shelves can be lower than the standard 220 cm from the floor level.

The mezzanine will fit well above long and narrow corridors, since such rooms look more harmonious with low ceilings. Thus, a mezzanine can be created in several rooms at once, for example, above the hallway, corridor and in the living room. At the same time, the living room will not lose in height, since only a small part of it will decrease. But the room will acquire a more interesting layout.

The possibility of covering rooms such as the bathroom and kitchen with a mezzanine is not excluded. Before removing the partition separating the mezzanine and the room from which the stairs will rise, you need to make sure that the design of the walls allows this to be done.

Construction material for mezzanine

Structurally, the mezzanine consists of beam supports and a ceiling that forms the floor. Supports and beams can be wooden or metal. The latter are a steel profile, which is connected by welding or bolts. Technically, a steel structure is more difficult to install, but in the end it will look much more elegant. Wood is more massive, but eliminates the work of a welder.

The mezzanine floor can be made of boards, fiberboard, polycarbonate boards, and also reinforced glass. In order to separate the room formed under the mezzanine, use any cladding (plasterboard, OSB, etc.). To prevent the walls of the mezzanine floor from working like a drum, mineral wool can be laid between them.

The design of the mezzanine can be spatial or openwork. The latter can become a decoration of the room, but for this it needs to be carefully designed. If you do not want to highlight the mezzanine, then to decorate it you can use the same materials that were used in the room. For modern interiors, a mezzanine option made of stainless steel and glass blocks may be suitable. Wooden structures will fit organically into classic interiors.

If the mezzanine is installed on supports, then the designer must take into account the load-bearing capacity of the floor under the room.

Mezzanine fencing

Any high-rise fencing, including mezzanines, is planned so that its height is above the person’s center of gravity. The safety boundary is at 110 cm, but for small mezzanines this may be too much, so the height of the balustrade is reduced to 90 cm.

The filling of the balustrade can be solid or openwork. Its appearance depends on the functionality of the upper room, as well as on the tastes and preferences of the owners. Naturally, it is better to hide the storage room on the mezzanine in the living room behind a solid fence. If you want to show the interior of the mezzanine, you can use the openwork filling of the fence. When choosing material for a balustrade, they are guided, first of all, by the characteristics of the interior. Depending on the rest of the finish and its style, balusters can be made of wood, forging, nickel-plated pipes, perforated steel, glass, etc.

Comfort on the second tier

The biggest problem with mezzanines is air stagnation and higher temperatures than below. If you don't foresee there is ventilation, then sleeping on the mezzanine will not be the best. The ventilation problem can be solved in two ways: by creating forced ventilation or by developing a special mezzanine design that will not interfere with the natural movement of air. There may not be air stagnation on the mezzanine if there is a ventilation grille at the location where it is installed. A separate exhaust duct can also be installed on purpose. In one-story houses or attic floors, ventilation can be supplied through the roof. As an option: you can connect the mezzanine room with a well-ventilated adjacent room through a flexible ventilation duct. If none of these methods are suitable, then you need to contact specialists who will definitely come up with a solution to the ventilation issue.

An important element of comfort is daylight, access to which on the mezzanine may be limited. The exception is mezzanines with equipped sleeping areas. The opposite workplace should be well lit and, preferably, natural light. Sometimes it may be necessary to make an additional window opening in the wall from the mezzanine side, or to install a light tunnel. However, any of these ideas will require consultation with an architect.

In search of a simple way out, many try to solve the problem of light with the help of artificial lighting. It must be said that modern lighting technology makes it possible to do this quite efficiently, but it is still not able to completely replace daylight.

An independent mezzanine is equipped with separate supports, independent from the main object. This method is used when the load-bearing structures of the object are not able to absorb additional load without certain strengthening measures.

The ceiling of a mezzanine floor is most often equipped with a monolithic reinforced concrete slab in permanent formwork made from galvanized corrugated sheets.
The thickness of the overlap may vary. It depends on the functional purpose of all the premises that will be located on the equipped mezzanine. Accordingly, different load-bearing capacity requirements apply to different types of premises.

Mezzanine project

Due to the rather complex approval process, it is customary to entrust the drafting of the mezzanine to professional design organizations. The design will be carried out on the basis of a technical conclusion on the possibility of carrying out internal reconstruction, as well as technical specifications. Both documents must be drawn up taking into account current rules and regulations.

When drawing up a mezzanine project, developers primarily take into account soundproofing requirements, as well as fire safety and thermal standards. The planned overlap must meet all of the above requirements.

The project is developed taking into account the determination of sufficient load-bearing capacity of the mezzanine. To do this, the type of room and method of its operation are initially determined.
It is important to respect the height of the floors that will be obtained in the end. Building codes stipulate that the installation of a mezzanine in rooms below five meters in height is prohibited.
Work on drawing up and agreeing on project documentation can take on average about three months.

The development of mezzanine projects is undertaken by architects and designers.

Experienced builders are involved in the construction of structures, and creative designers select exclusive interiors.

Coordination of the mezzanine floor

Design documentation for the installation of a mezzanine requires mandatory approval. Any construction work related to the arrangement of the mezzanine floor should be carried out only after the approval process has been completed. Otherwise, they will be classified as self-building. And this will require significant effort and expense to legalize the process.

Initially, design documentation is developed for the arrangement of the mezzanine based on a preliminary study of the condition of the load-bearing structures and the corresponding technical conclusion.

Next stage - approval of finished project documentation in the relevant supervisory authorities SES, Ministry of Emergency Situations and others, in accordance with relevant requirements.
After receiving all approvals, the design documentation must be approved by the Prefecture of the district where the building is located. Since the technical and economic indicators of the building are increasing, this stage is mandatory when approving the mezzanine floor. Approved documents must be submitted to the appropriate MEC, which will issue permission for the construction of a mezzanine floor.

After receiving permission, construction work can begin. After this, the approval process for putting the facility into operation will begin. In particular, due to the increase in the area of ​​the building, it will be necessary to make changes to the certificate of ownership and obtain new documentation from the BTI.

The concept of “mezzanine floor” refers more to the construction industry than to design. The definition of a mezzanine is given in the set of rules concerning residential multi-apartment buildings (SP 54.13330.2001): a platform as part of a two-story room or inside an apartment, on a high-rise floor, whose area does not exceed 40% of the area of ​​the main room.

Developers install a mezzanine on one of the floors of a high-rise building (usually the top) when calculations show the possibility of “extra” height of the building. From the building height regulated in a given development zone, the height of the required attic and basement is subtracted, and the remaining vertical meters are divided by the standard floor height (2.7-2.8 m). If there is a surplus of 1.5-1.6 m, then distributing it in parts across floors, increasing the height of each by ten centimeters, is pointless. It is much more profitable to arrange a mezzanine floor, making the apartments on it one and a half stories high - this is equally beneficial for developers and buyers.

Mezzanine design

Let's estimate the ceiling height in a room that is minimally suitable for building a mezzanine floor. So, the first level of the room must have a height of at least 2100 mm, then the thickness of the mezzanine platform - 150 mm, and finally, the distance between the mezzanine and the ceiling - 1100 mm (at a lower height it will be impossible to sit, only lie down). It turns out that the minimum height of a potentially two-level room is: 2100+150+1100=3350 mm or 3.35 m. The calculated height of the “lying” mezzanine is suitable provided that the area of ​​this mezzanine does not exceed 4 m2. In order for a mezzanine floor to become “pedestrian”, a ceiling height of over 3.8 m is required - in this case, a utility room with a ceiling height of 1.7-1.8 m can be arranged underneath it. If for typical Soviet-built high-rise buildings only warehouse-type mezzanines are available ( essentially a shelf between two walls), then in new buildings where there are floors with a height of 4.5 m and even 6.3 m, it is quite possible to create a two- and three-level apartment.

Room to create a mezzanine floor. It must have large window openings, be rectangular and elongated or square, but then already have a significant area. To calculate the most acceptable area of ​​the mezzanine floor, you should divide the area of ​​the main room by three. The area above the windows is least suitable for creating a mezzanine area - even during the day it will be too dark here. The same rule applies to the long wall of the room - here the mezzanine will not become a floor, but a long and narrow corridor, which is inconvenient to use.
Platform for mezzanine. The main strength elements in its composition are beams, transverse and longitudinal. To create them, either LVL timber, designed for the construction of load-bearing structures, or steel channels and beams (T- and I-beams) are used.
The steel frame of the mezzanine is much more rigid and not prone to vibration, however, the work to create it is quite labor-intensive, accompanied by inevitable difficulties with finishing (it is extremely difficult to organically introduce metal beams into a home interior) and contributes to an increase in the load on the load-bearing floors.

The supports for the mezzanine frame are existing walls or specially made pillars - they are made of the same material as the frame elements for the mezzanine platform. In special cases - steel beams forming the floors of a building or a reinforced concrete building with monolithic walls of increased strength - the frame is suspended with strands, fixed with 90-110 mm anchors.

According to a simplified standard scheme, the sheathing of the mezzanine frame is made from 16 mm plywood or boards, over which the finishing coating is laid. On the side of the “first” floor, the mezzanine is lined with plastic panels or plasterboard. You can form a glass floor on a mezzanine (acrylic or laminated glass) by laying and securing glass sheets to a beam frame.

And yet, the living space between the floor and ceiling is not convenient enough on its own. For its effective arrangement, competent design is necessary.

Arrangement of the mezzanine floor

In the process of planning it, the temptation arises to create something like a room in a compartment car - to bring out a platform at a certain height, provide it with a ladder and use it. But for what purposes should such a mezzanine be used? The mezzanine floor has a limited height and is therefore suitable for only certain functions.

Bedroom on the mezzanine. For young residents of a one-and-a-half-story apartment, the mezzanine will be interesting as a bedroom.

This solution will overcome the lack of height on the mezzanine floor - it is quite enough so that when sitting on a berth, your head does not rest against the ceiling. When organizing a bedroom on the mezzanine, be sure to take care of the fence - lattice, approximately 500-700 mm high. A blind fence for a mezzanine floor is not at all suitable, because it will interfere with natural light and air exchange.

Creating a bedroom on the mezzanine floor provides another advantage - expanding the area of ​​​​a small apartment, in fact, turning a “one-room apartment” into a “two-room apartment”. If the apartment is two-room, then on the mezzanine floor, located in one of the rooms, it is more convenient to make a study, organize a living room under it, and use the remaining room as a bedroom.

Pantry (dressing room) mezzanine. The idea of ​​arranging these service spaces on the mezzanine floor seems successful - 1.6 m seems to be enough for a storage room. And yet, you should not turn the mezzanine floor into a dressing room or storage room: the stored property will be clearly visible from the “lower” level of the apartment; lifting property up a narrow staircase located at a rather sharp angle will be extremely difficult. It is convenient only for an artist living in a studio apartment to store their works on the mezzanine - for household members with other vital interests, the mezzanine-storage area will be of little interest. A much more profitable solution would be to install a dressing room under the mezzanine-bedroom; the main thing is to successfully combine it with the stairs leading to the upper “floor”.

Children's mezzanine. On the mezzanine floor it is quite possible to organize a children's room - at least a play area, or at most a full-fledged room for children. Children will perceive the idea of ​​​​a nursery on the second level of the room with great enthusiasm; they like unusual rooms, such as attics, huts or tree houses. The minimum age of a child for whom it makes sense to create a children's mezzanine is more than 6 years. It is important to ensure the safety of the mezzanine structure - equip the site with strong lattice fences extending to the ceiling, install a comfortable and fairly flat staircase with strong railings. Mezzanine fencing can also be formed from intertwined ropes and will be relatively soft.

Current “mezzanine” nuances

Regardless of the decisions regarding the arrangement of the mezzanine floor, in its technical design it is necessary to adhere to several rules, discussed below.

Stationary ladder. Attached staircases for the mezzanine are completely unsuitable; moreover, they are dangerous. To increase the functionality of the stairs leading to the mezzanine floor, you can place drawers in its steps for storing small items. Lighting system.

Another problem is hot air. At the ceiling level, the air temperature is always higher than at the floor, since warm air is lighter and collects at the highest point of an enclosed room.

A split system with forced ventilation will allow you to create an acceptable temperature and fairly fresh atmosphere on the residential mezzanine. If the internal split block is placed on or near the enclosing structure of the mezzanine floor, it will take up minimal space.
