And if it weren’t for the persistence of Dmitry Kurkov, who decided to examine what seemed like an ordinary piece of stone, an event that could change our ideas about earthly and cosmic history would not have occurred.

When the stone was lifted and cleaned of dirt, it turned out that on its chip one could clearly see a bolt (coil?) about a centimeter long that had somehow gotten inside. Who, I wonder, needed to drag this part deep into the forest and throw it into the lake there? And then trample it into the rock... Although, since this thing was found in the stone, it means that it got there when this stone was still soft earth. And, after a thorough examination, it turned out that the age of this artifact is 300-320 million years!

A thorough chemical analysis showed: over the past time, the Fe atoms of iron diffused, that is, they moved inside the stone to a depth of one and a half centimeters, and in their place were silicon atoms Si that came from the stone. As a result of this, an oval glandular “cocoon” was formed, and is now clearly visible. For paleontologists and lithological geologists, this phenomenon is the most common: they know that everything that is inside a stone for millions of years sooner or later becomes stone.

But there is even more impressive evidence of the antiquity of the phenomenon: X-ray photographs clearly showed that INSIDE the stone there are other “bolts” that are now hidden from view.

The stone successively visited the paleontological, zoological, physical-technical, aviation-technological institutes, the Paleontological and Biological museums, laboratories and design bureaus, the Moscow Aviation Institute, Moscow State University, as well as several dozen other specialists in various fields of knowledge. Paleontologists have resolved all questions regarding the age of the stone: it is really ancient, it is 300-320 million years old.

It was established that the “bolt” got into the rock BEFORE IT HARDENED and, therefore, its age is in no way less, if not more, than the age of the stone. The “bolt” could not have hit the stone later (for example, as a result of an explosion, including a nuclear one), because the structure of the stone was not damaged by it.

So, something more than 300 million years ago (long before dinosaurs appeared on Earth!) accidentally fell to the bottom of the ancient ocean and was subsequently firmly sealed into petrified sedimentary rock. Who, after all, “littered” metal objects on Earth during the Devonian or Carboniferous periods of the Paleozoic era?

Another discovery was made in 1844 at the Kingwood Quarry in Millfield (northern Britain). It was a steel nail, about an inch (2.5 cm) embedded, including its head, in the hard sandstone. The point of the nail protruded outward into the layer of boulder clay, having been almost completely eaten away by rust. In 1851, gold miner Hiram Witt discovered a slightly rusty nail in a piece of gold-bearing quartz “the size of a man’s fist.”

In the same year, in Dorchester (USA), among fragments of stones broken off from a rock by an explosion, to the great amazement of those gathered, the following were discovered: “2 fragments metal object, torn in half by the explosion. When joined, the pieces formed a bell-shaped vessel 4.5 inches (114 mm) high, 6.5 inches (165 mm) wide at the base, 2.5 inches (64 mm) at the top and about 1/8 inch (3 mm) thick. ). On the surface there were six images of a flower or bouquet, covered with pure silver, and around the lower part of the vessel there was a vine or a wreath, also covered with silver. The carving and plating were superbly executed by an unknown craftsman.

In 1968, in Utah (USA), William Meister discovered two clear prints of human feet in shoes. Moreover, the left shoe stepped on the trilobite with its heel, the remains of which were petrified, along with the imprint. Trilobites - arthropods, similar to modern crustaceans, lived on our planet 400-500 million years ago...

Unfortunately, the prospectors were illiterate people, interested exclusively in gold sand. Therefore, not a single find of that time is described as it would be done by a professional archaeologist or paleontologist. And it cannot be considered a reliable scientific fact.

In Chernigov, in a cultural layer of the 19th century, a strange, unusually hard stone the size of an adult’s fist was discovered. For decades, miners in South Africa have been digging up mysterious metal spheres. According to a surviving inscription, the device was created in 80 BC, and many experts initially believed that it was an astrolabe, an instrument for astronomical calculations. But subsequently, an X-ray examination of the mechanism revealed interesting details: the gear system turned out to be too refined. Such technology was mastered only in 1575! Who created this amazing tool 2,000 years ago, and why the technology became lost is unknown to this day.

Battery from Baghdad

Today batteries can be bought at any kiosk, store, and even at the bazaar. Well, let me introduce you to a 2,000 year old battery. This find, known as the Baghdad Battery, was discovered in a Parthian settlement and dates back to between 248 and 226 BC. The device consists of a 5.5-inch clay vessel containing a copper cylinder, reinforced with asphalt, with an oxidized iron rod inside. The experts who examined it came to the conclusion that to produce electric current, the device only needed an acid or alkaline filling. It is believed that this ancient battery may have been used in the galvanization of gold. If this is true, how did it happen that the technology became lost and the battery disappeared from the face of the earth for 1,800 years?

Koso Artifact

While mining in the California mountains near Olancha in the winter of 1961, Wallace Lane, Virginia Maxey and Mike Mikesell found a rock that was initially mistaken for a geode. Experts have determined that the artifact is in fact a spark plug from the 1920s. Unfortunately, the Koso artifact has disappeared and further examination is impossible. But is there a rational explanation for its existence? Was it really found in a geode? And if so, how could a 1920s spark plug become fossilized 500,000 years ago?

Ancient airplane model

There are artifacts belonging to the cultures of Ancient Egypt and Central America, according to appearance reminiscent of modern airplanes. An Egyptian artifact discovered in the tomb of Saqquara in 1898 closely resembles a model airplane, it has a fuselage, wings and a tail. Experts believe that this six-inch aircraft has aerodynamic contours. As for the find in Central America, it was cast in gold and its approximate age is about 1,000 years. Its shape is very similar to the Space Shuttle. It even has what looks like a cockpit.

Giant stone balls from Costa Rica

Its inhabitants, those same wild Indians, traded with the entire continent (as evidenced by arrowheads from all over North America found in Cahokia burials). Cahokia's population was 40 thousand, larger than London or any other European capital. And, by the way, the first city in the USA with the same population appeared in the 19th century.

Cahokia lasted until about the 13th century. By the time Columbus arrived in America, it was already abandoned and uninhabited. Scientists have put forward different versions of what led to the decline of the once great city. Among the guesses were: the disappearance of game in the forests (due to excessive hunting by townspeople), political squabbles and a natural disaster.

The closest to the truth were the supporters latest version. In a study published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences scientists Sam Muñoz and Aylward Williams provide evidence of an ancient flood that occurred around 1200 AD. This was probably the beginning of the city's decline. Computer modeling showed that the level of the Mississippi rose by 10-12 meters, this destroyed crops, which, in turn, led to famine and a decrease in population. Around 1400, the inhabitants abandoned their city and migrated to other parts of the continent.

Rock paintings in the caves of Cappadocia

Archaeologists working in the caves of Cappadocia in Turkey were surprised to find abstract images on the walls that resemble, if not a masterpiece of modern painting, then at least the patterns of an oriental carpet. In the 1960s, when the images were first discovered, scientists decided that this was the oldest map of the world, or, more precisely, a 9,000-year-old map of the area of the Chatal settlement.

Recent research has shown that the mysterious picture represents documented evidence of a volcanic eruption: the black cells are houses, and the fuzzy objects nearby are lava flows from Mount Khasan, which in those years was an active volcano. After analyzing the igneous rocks, scientists concluded that the volcanic eruption occurred about 8,900 years ago.

Skull from Otranto

In 1480, the Apulian city of Otranto was captured by the Ottoman Turks. Most of the inhabitants were killed or taken into slavery, but 813 men between the ages of 15 and 50 were beheaded. According to legend, this happened because the vanquished refused to convert to Islam. In 1771, those executed were considered patron saints of the city, and in 2013, Pope Francis canonized them.

Their relics are displayed in the city cathedral. One of the skulls attracts attention: 16 holes are drilled in it. The priests did not allow scientists to take the remains for analysis, and the mystery of the skull for a long time remained a secret.

It was only in early 2015 that a study on the skull was published in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology. According to its authors, holes were drilled in the skull to obtain bone powder, which in the Middle Ages was considered an effective remedy for many diseases, and powder from the skull of a violently killed person was valued higher than that of someone who died a natural death, and powder from the skull of a saint was generally considered a panacea. It is assumed that the holes were drilled in the 18th century, when the skulls were placed in the cathedral.

The cipher, called "jötunvöllur", is found on messages in different parts Scandinavia. Such tablets were widely distributed and exchanged like modern SMS messages, scientists say.
