In most cases, a fence for a site combines protective and decorative functions. But sometimes owners need to strengthen the security of the territory, especially if there are certain valuables there. For such cases, a barbed wire fence is used.

“Thorn” is a special wire equipped with spikes along its entire length. It was invented in 1872 in France, but became famous thanks to the American farmer Henry Rose. He made a fence from boards with pieces of “thorn.” This wire fence interested farmers and they began to use similar fences for animal pens, trying to improve their design. The first company to produce barbed fencing - L.L. Ellwood Manufacturing sold 270 tons of these products in 1875.

Note: soon the majority of farmers switched to a new type of fence, since it had high protective qualities and low cost.

Today “thorn” is used for fencing:

  • private territory;
  • construction sites;
  • strategic objects (military);
  • industrial and warehouse enterprises;
  • sports (volleyball, football, tennis), children's playgrounds;
  • areas for walking and training dogs;
  • security facilities (prisons);
  • pastures.

Barbed wire fencing has the following advantages:

  • high degree of protection;
  • ease and simplicity of construction;
  • affordable price. Prices for components of the structure are significantly lower than those of other protective fences.

Types of studded fence

To make a thorny fence the following is used:

  • galvanized wire with sharp spikes along its entire length. According to Gosstandart, its thickness is 2.8 mm. This is the simplest protective structure intended for domestic use - for example, for constructing a barbed wire fence at a dacha or farm;
  • reinforced steel strip belt equipped with sharp blades. It can be straight (AKL) or twisted (ASKL), and is used at both private and public industrial facilities.

Please note: the second type of “thorn” is more reliable, since such an obstacle is difficult to remove even with the help of special tools.

Reinforced razor tape can be presented in the form of:

  • flat tape;
  • grids with diamond-shaped cells;
  • volumetric spirals of different diameters (Bruno spiral);
  • spikes attached to the finished fence.

Domestic enterprises produce various types of “thorns,” but the most recognizable and widespread on the market are products of the Egoza and Gyurza brands.

A fence with barbed wire can be presented as:

  • pillars with a “thorn” stretched between them;
  • an ordinary fence on top of which a protective structure is installed. For example, there is a variety equipped with L- or Y-shaped brackets for attaching barbed wire to them.

Installation of barbed fencing on a regular fence

The easiest way to secure your site is by installing barbed wire on top of the finished fence. The shape and method of installation is determined by the characteristics of the barrier. Most often, special brackets are attached to the supports, which will hold the “thorn”.

To install a protective device on a fence with your own hands you will need:

  • spiked wire;
  • brackets;
  • welding machine, electrodes;
  • metal staples, pliers;
  • steel string.

How to make a protective layer over a finished fence? To do this, you need to weld a bracket to each post. The tape is stretched to the required state and secured to the welded elements using metal brackets.

How to attach the “thorn” so that it does not sag over time? To do this, a string is threaded inside the wire rings, pulling it between the brackets. It should pass at a height of 30-50 mm from the top edge of the fence. The string is secured with staples, pulling until it stops. Then the spiral studded tape is distributed around the string, finally forming its density.

Attention: installation of the protective fence should be carried out wearing special gloves and thick clothing.

Installation of a solid studded fence

To build a solid wire fence with your own hands, you need to correctly install the metal supports. Holes with a depth of 0.6-0.8 m are dug under them at a distance of 2.5 m. Fence posts are installed by driving into the ground or concreting.

How to stretch a spiked mesh between posts? To do this, metal eyes are welded along the entire height of the supports with a certain pitch, which will be its clamps. The optimal distance between them is 10-20 cm. Then they stretch the “thorn”, forming horizontal rows from it. It is attached to the eyes on the poles using staples. The web is compacted by fixing the tape crosswise.

You can enhance the protective functions of a studded fence by making the structure energized. To do this, current is supplied to the fence using a battery. A long wire is run along the entire perimeter of the structure, which connects one terminal to another. The mains voltage should be checked periodically.

Important: there must be a sign on the energized fence with the appropriate notice.

Attaching barbed wire allows you to protect the area from the penetration of strangers and wild animals, and ensure the safety of property. The method of execution of such a fence and the degree of its reliability are determined by specific conditions and the desired effect.

The Egoza Perimeter Solutions Plant offers individuals and legal entities to order a barbed wire fence. We guarantee low prices and high quality products. Fences made from our material will last at least 50 years. Fences are a functional and inexpensive solution that protects a site from outside penetration by people, wild animals, and livestock. Easy installation also speaks in favor of such a barrier.

Features and Specifications

The protective part is lightened or galvanized barbed wire (GOST 285-69) with a diameter of 2.5 mm, with spikes wound every 75 mm. The spatial arrangement of the spikes makes it impossible to easily penetrate the tensioned lines.

The main characteristics include:

  • strength - low-carbon steel is used for manufacturing;
  • corrosion resistance – galvanizing prevents chemical processes of destruction of the alloy;
  • good flexibility - it is almost impossible to bend the wire with your hands.

Important. Galvanized material lasts much longer than those made of ferrous metal. In the latter case, the absence of a protective layer reduces the service life.

The use of barbed fences is most rational:

  • when constructing pastures and paddocks for livestock;
  • for fencing private land plots;
  • to organize the protection of territories with industrial facilities located on them.

In fact, in this way you can fence off any obstacle or area.

How much does it cost to install a barbed wire fence?

The cost of building a fence consists of the cost of purchasing wire, including support posts, and paying for labor.

The amount of material is calculated based on:

  • the perimeter of the site - the larger it is, the more products will be needed;
  • type of fence - tension of protection along the top of the existing fence in 2-4 lines or complete overlap from ground level;
  • frequencies of individual lines, including straight and diagonal.

The cost of paying for the installation team that will carry out the installation directly depends on the volume of work.

Egoza is a well-known and recognizable trademark among specialists involved in perimeter fencing.

Have you noticed that everyone is at home in United States They are often not fenced at all - the house stands in the middle of a green lawn, and that’s all. From the house there is an asphalt path across the lawn to the main sidewalk, and on the side there is an asphalt driveway to the garage.

We cannot yet boast of such openness and will definitely put a fence around the house. If you still have this desire in your soul to be closer to the world, to “take a chance and leave the ignition key in the car,” then you can try to install a fence made of wire structures. And protection, and everything is visible, and elegant.

As a matter of fact, you probably shouldn’t grumble too much about these wire fences; they can also serve a very useful function:

  • Firstly, after all, to fence off personal territory.
  • Secondly, for fencing children's playgrounds, when you can easily see from the outside what is happening inside.
  • Thirdly, to fence off the dog walking area. This is not even for one’s own protection, but for the protection of others.
  • Fourthly, to fence off the territory, the condition of which, nevertheless, must be monitored from the outside. A clear example here is all kinds of sports grounds, primarily football and tennis.
  • Fifthly, to protect animals. Kilometers of such barriers can be seen along roads in the Alps of Germany, Switzerland, Austria and France. This prevents wild animals from entering the roadway, and preventing collisions in these situations is a win-win for both humans and animals.
  • Well, and sixthly, wire fences have long been persistently and successfully used to fence special military facilities.

This widespread use of this type of fence is due to several factors:

  • Wire is quite cheap, so the cost of erected fences can be an order of magnitude lower than that of conventional stone ones or those using corrugated sheets.
  • Wire structures are much lighter than any other used in the “fence art”, and this leads to a significant acceleration of all work.
  • The very nature of the work involved in constructing such fences is also simpler, and again there is a significant gain in speed.

Helpful advice! If you are really limited in time and the speed of construction is the most important factor for you, you can choose a very simple technology - metal or concrete pillars driven into the ground and a chain-link mesh stretched between them. In this situation, choose special wire posts that already have the necessary mounting holes. If you choose wooden poles, you will have to install the mounting brackets yourself.

Possible options

In addition to the above option - driven posts and a mesh between them, there are others:

  • Similar to the simple one above, all the same pillars, but the mesh, opening down, is pulled onto a cable running about 10-15 from the top edge of the pillars.
  • You can use ready-made mesh structures placed on an external metal frame. Very often such structures are welded to the posts on the left and right, otherwise the installation of the mesh will be preceded by the installation of posts for it.
  • You can also build a barbed wire fence. Maybe you don’t want to liken your living area to a barracks and such a fence is not for you. But for guaranteed protection against unwanted entry into a special-purpose protected area, barbed wire in coils will be good. Here we cannot even say that it will take a day to create such a fence - it will take no more than 2-3 hours if the posts are prepared in advance.

Work progress

Here is the progress of all the work on creating what may be the most labor-intensive fence using wire - tension between the posts:

  • First, the pillars are installed. Keep a few things in mind here:
  • If you have metal hammers at your disposal, then you free yourself from the need to dig a hole under the post and perform concrete work. Otherwise, this work comes to the fore.
  • The distance between the posts for the wire is no more than 2.5 meters.
  • If you have chosen specifically for tensioning wires, then orient them correctly to guide the top cable. This cable will serve as the fastening base for the upper edge of the mesh. The instructions for installing such pillars should tell you the correct orientation.

  • Typically, such fences are not equipped with a concrete parapet at the bottom, but if you are making a fence “for yourself,” the parapet will be an additional advantage in the opinion of others about you. For a concrete parapet, you will also have to lay a ditch between the pillars and concrete it.
  • The depth of the hole for the posts under the wire is 70-80 cm, for the ditch between them – up to 40 cm. But here you need to take into account your region. In northern regions, it is necessary to take into account the depth of soil freezing. If the freezing depth is 1 meter, then you will have to make holes 20-30 cm deeper.

  • The mesh will be stretched between the posts, so the two outer posts will experience a noticeable inward pull. Therefore, it is very advisable to equip these two posts below with supporting posts on the side of the fence line.
  • When installed, logs are screwed into the outer pillars and the eyes of the upper cable are threaded through them. The tension of the cable is regulated by the correct selection of its length and the screwed-in lags themselves - the deeper the lag goes into the post, the stronger the tension.
  • As a finishing touch, the upper edge of the unfolded wire mesh is attached to the cable. You can't do without pliers here.

Helpful advice! Working with wire requires great care. Always perform this with reliable gloves. Be extremely careful when working with barbed wire. Seemingly insignificant injuries received from accidental contact with the ends of the wire are very painful; unlike other trivial cuts, they take a long time to heal, and most importantly, they can become a source of much more serious troubles as a result of decay.

Electricity and wire fence structure

Humanity has long ago solved this problem - how to ensure a complete overview of the territory from all sides and in no case allow penetration into it. The solution was to use electricity.

How to make an energized fence, and even on your own, is quite simple. A battery, securely sheltered from the weather and a long wire stretched from one battery terminal to another, but across the entire perimeter of the fence, back and forth. The solution is simple, but in the style of the hero Evgeny Mironov from “Beware of the Car,” who set a trap for a thief.

Think carefully about whether you disrespect the world around you enough to protect yourself from it with electric shock. In any case, safety precautions must be strictly observed. Be sure to hang warning signs on both sides of such “personal protection” that the fence is energized, and the more often the better.

Be sure to check the voltage level from time to time. It is necessary to understand that you bear legal responsibility for the harm that such an electric fence may cause to others.

Podberezovikov was right, you shouldn’t set “traps” on people. But for animals, electricity may be useful. A very popular type of fence is the electronic dog fence. There are several options for equipping fences, which even include installing warning zones when approaching the fence, the impact zone and its level.

The use of such fences requires careful and patient training of dogs and mandatory installation of warning signs along the entire perimeter of the fence.

Before you decide

Before you decide to use wire to protect your territory instead of a permanent stone fence, carefully read all the photo materials available to you. Watch the video in this article carefully. Among the many proposals, you will certainly be able to choose an option that allows you to combine the useful and the necessary - use a lightweight, quickly erected structure with maximum reliability and excellent protective properties.

You should not start work until you are firmly convinced that the decisions made are correct. It cannot be said that the cost of an error will be great, which is what wire is famous for. But a lot of hope will be wasted.

Barbed wire fencing is the cheapest, easiest and fastest way to ensure the safety of the territory and the safety of property. They have found application in a wide variety of areas of human activity: agriculture, industry, private construction, military affairs, etc. Barbed wire is an effective obstacle in the path of animals and people, but can cause harm to health, so its use requires competent design and careful work.

Traditional barbed wire is equipped with sharp spikes, but recently barbed tape - strips with sharp blades cut from steel - have become increasingly in demand. Tapes pose a more serious threat and are virtually insurmountable without tools. Modern production technologies (reinforcement, galvanized and polymer coating for corrosion protection) have made the wire and tape more durable and strong.

Barbed wire can act both as a fence itself and as an addition to existing fences. The first option is widely used in livestock farming, the second is most often used to ensure increased security measures in summer cottages, industrial facilities, warehouses and private areas.

Depending on the type of fence, the shape and method of attaching the canopy fence is selected. Placing a spiral barrier on straight brackets, or directly on fence posts, vertically above the fence is the simplest and least expensive method. The brackets are also welded or secured to each fence post. An L-shaped canopy with straight barbed wire stretched along the fence in 3-4 rows. Y-shaped arrangement on the brackets with the help of a tension wire, a volumetric spiral of barbed wire is fixed.

The wire is attached to the supports; the technology for installing such obstacles is very simple and does not require high qualifications. It is much more important to choose the right type of material and fencing parameters, which requires special knowledge and practical experience. Specialists of the Citadel company will provide a full range of work on the installation of barbed wire fences, starting with the development of the project in accordance with the tasks and wishes. Work is possible both on ready-made projects and on individual sketches. Excellent technical equipment and qualified personnel allow our company to install fences made of various types of wire in the shortest possible time.

Fencing Features:

Aggressive. Anti-vandal. Difficult to overcome.

High installation speed. Economical.

No need for seasonal maintenance work.

An economical fence for a summer residence is constructed when the fence is temporary or in order to save the family budget. However, you should not think that if little money is allocated for the construction, it will become unusable after a while. On the contrary, there are fencing options that do not require special capital investments and at the same time will reliably protect your territory for several years, or even decades. Let's look at some of these examples taken from observations of the real life of summer residents.

Wooden fences

Wooden fences, that is, fences made of picket fences or unedged boards, are a budget option for fencing that can be built in the shortest possible time with minimal monetary costs. The corresponding material is not in short supply in warehouses, so it can be purchased at any time and inexpensively.

The only thing you need to pay attention to is installing the posts and attaching the logs to them. It is best to construct fence posts (racks) from: a round pipe, a square pipe, a channel N 8–10 or a corner 63 x 63 (70 x 70). They concrete better and withstand heavy loads.

Chainlink fences

If you already have reliable drains for the fence, you can replace the wooden filling with a chain-link mesh. The mesh is sold in hardware stores in the form of rolls about 10 m long and 1.5 m high. The mesh cell (square) can be different: 20 x 20 mm, 35 x 35 mm, 45 x 45 mm or 50 x 50 mm.

To fill the space between the posts, the mesh is unwoven to the appropriate size and welded to the posts (metal) using electric welding. The fence option does not require a lot of investment in both time and money. And if you paint the mesh in the color you want, you will get a beautiful and durable fence.

Wire fencing

What is wire fencing? This is a type of economical fence for a summer residence when a picket fence, edged board or chain-link mesh is replaced with wire Ø 3.0 or 3.5 mm. The design is suitable for both wooden and metal racks. But it is better for wooden ones, since nails measuring 100, 150 mm are driven into the posts and wire is manually attached to them.

Options for fastening the wire between the posts can be different: longitudinal fastening, from corner to corner in combination with longitudinal, etc. It is quite clear that such a fence is purely symbolic, since it only protects your territory from stray dogs, nevertheless it is no longer so rare in dacha cooperatives.

Fences made from improvised means

Fences made from improvised materials open up wide opportunities for individual creativity.

What can you not see in summer cottages! These are fences made from wicker branches, concreted glass bottles, plastic bottles coated with clay, fences made from car tires and even from used old skis. In a word, whoever can get what, makes it out of it.

Economical fences for dachas made from hedges deserve special attention. You can plant a bush and trim it evenly, plant flowers, lilacs, etc. A hedge is beautiful, but it requires constant care: after all, it is alive and needs to be watered, trimmed, fluffed, etc.

As an inclusion, you can find a sunflower hedge. And it looks exotic and protects your yard well from prying eyes. Moreover, you can leave the sunflower for the next season by trimming it along the cord to the same height.
