Choosing the best blinds for the balcony. Which blinds are best for a balcony? Review of options, pros and cons (35 photos) Roller blinds for balcony windows

Modern blinds are distinguished by a wide variety, and immediately choosing the best option for a balcony is not so easy. Wide and narrow, with and without patterns, smooth and textured, made from a variety of materials - how can you not get confused and determine which ones are the best? To understand this, you need to find out in more detail what types of blinds there are, their pros and cons, and the rules of choice for a specific interior.

Blinds are plates connected in a row, the rotation of which is regulated by a simple mechanism. The plates can be positioned horizontally or vertically, which is their main difference.

Blinds can be called an analogue of curtains, but more functional and practical, which is why their popularity is constantly growing. And if they were once used mainly in offices, they have now become a frequent element of home interiors. What are their advantages?

  1. Unlike traditional curtains, blinds do not wrinkle and are easier to clean from dirt. Vertical and roller blinds are impregnated with dust-repellent compounds, so caring for them is not difficult.

  2. Simple adjustment allows you to select the optimal dimming mode. By rotating the plates you can add or reduce natural light on the balcony for maximum comfort.

  3. The arrangement of the plates, even when closed, does not interfere with air circulation, but at the same time reliably protects the room from prying eyes. Thanks to this, you can open the window for ventilation at any time without worrying about someone outside seeing you.

  4. Regardless of the type of blinds and the material from which they are made, it is very easy to install them with your own hands. This does not require any experience or special skills.

  5. A variety of shapes, colors and textures allows you to choose blinds for almost any interior. Moreover, depending on the type, they can be mounted in a window opening, on a wall, or on a ceiling.

Types of blinds designs

Blinds are divided into types according to two criteria - the location of the plates and the material of manufacture. Let's look at each variety in more detail.

Horizontal

This option is the most budget-friendly. Most often they have small dimensions and are installed on balcony frames, and for each double-glazed window separately. Their design is very simple and consists of slats, a cornice with a built-in adjustment mechanism, a mesh of threads and a control cord. To prevent blinds from fluttering in the wind when the windows are open, manufacturers offer additional devices for fixing the bottom strip.

Horizontal blinds are convenient where flowers grow on the windowsills. Thin narrow plates take up very little space and do not block the space of window openings. They do not interfere with caring for plants; on the contrary, they help protect them from bright sun during the daytime. In addition, the slats slightly retain dust from the street, which is also a plus.

To clean the blinds, simply dip them in a soapy solution and rinse with clean water. Dirt is removed very easily, the slats dry quickly. The main thing is not to wet the cornice, because there is a mechanism there that regulates the functions of rotating the plates. If water gets into it, the blinds will become unusable.

As for the disadvantages of horizontal structures: the plates turn yellow over time in the sun and dry out (especially with cheap blinds), with active use the mechanism quickly breaks down, and there is a high probability of accidentally touching and bending the slats. In addition, they look too simple and cannot give the interior either comfort or originality. These blinds are best suited for balconies in a minimalist style.

Traditionally, horizontal blinds are installed indoors, but there is also an outdoor option - facade blinds. Their design is more durable, all elements are made of metal, so they protect not only from the sun, but also from breaking windows. For this reason, façade blinds are an excellent alternative to protective grilles on lower-floor balconies. When open, the panels transmit light perfectly, do not interfere with air circulation, and are easy and convenient to operate.

This type of blinds is classified as horizontal, but has significant differences in design. Pleated blinds are two aluminum profiles with pleated fabric fixed between them. Blinds can be controlled using a handle, chain, cord or remotely. The day-night system has an additional profile and dense fabric, so that closed blinds practically do not allow light to pass through. When folded, the thickness of the fabric does not exceed 5 cm.

Such blinds can be attached along the contour of the glass itself, on the window frame, or on the window opening. Pleated designs are perfect for windows of non-standard shapes - trapezoidal, round, triangular and others. The fabric is washable, except for models with a metallized coating, which simply wipe off dust with a damp cloth. Thanks to the variety of colors, you can choose the best option for any interior. Balconies with such blinds look impressive and stylish, even from the outside.

Vertical

Vertical blinds are a structure made of an aluminum or plastic cornice, vertical slats, a connecting chain with weights and sliders, and a control cord. The lamellas easily rotate around their axis, and when opened they are assembled like an accordion. When purchasing, you can optionally choose the closing method - from right to left, from left to right, or from the center in both directions. As a rule, vertical blinds are mounted on walls and ceilings using brackets.

The range of vertical blinds is huge. Lamels can be fabric, plastic, aluminum, of various colors and shades. For residential premises and balconies, manufacturers offer options with various patterns that give the interior a special atmosphere. When closed, such designs have the maximum resemblance to traditional curtains, so they are great for decorating rooms in a classic style.

Fabric slats, which are most often chosen for home interiors, undergo special treatment, as a result of which the material acquires dust-repellent properties and fades less in the sun. To shade a balcony from the sun, just one movement of the hand is enough, while with horizontal blinds you need to close each window separately.

Vertical structures also have disadvantages. Firstly, they take up more space and limit access to the windowsill.

Secondly, to open the window sashes, you need to move the slats or put your hand between them, which is not always convenient. In addition, if the blinds are from ceiling to floor, there is a high probability of accidentally catching and damaging the slats. This is especially true for those who have small children.

Rolled

Roller blinds are more reminiscent of curtains, since they do not consist of individual strips, but of a whole piece of canvas. The design consists of a thin shaft, a cloth wound on it and a chain mechanism for control. Closed-type blinds additionally include a shaft box and two guide bars that protect the fabric from bending and sagging. Such blinds can be attached to the wall, ceiling, window frame, and even directly to the window sashes. They are made from fabric of different densities - there are translucent models, and there are those that practically do not transmit light. The big advantage of roller blinds is the variety of textures and colors. Even the simplest models greatly transform the balcony, making it cozy and more attractive.

More recently, a variety of roller blinds, the day-night system, or zebra blinds, has appeared. They consist of not one, but two canvases, on which stripes of transparent fabric alternate with translucent ones. As the material moves, the strips shift and overlap each other, resulting in the regulation of the intensity of natural light. These blinds are also available in two types - open and cassette, and have many color options.

Types of blinds by material of manufacture

Not only the price and appearance of the blinds, but also the durability of the structure, ease of installation and operation, as well as some other factors depend on the material of manufacture.

Types of blindsMain characteristics

Metal plates are durable and strong, easy to clean from dirt, do not dry out in the sun and are not afraid of moisture. But at the same time they rattle, look too simple, and fade with time

Affordable, easy to use, lightweight, and resistant to moisture. Cons: in the cheapest models, the plates quickly turn yellow in the sun and crack, and the mechanism often breaks

They look impressive and expensive, thanks to special treatment they do not fade under the sun and do not dry out for a long time. The disadvantage is the large weight of the wooden plates, which is why over time the blinds begin to sag and problems appear with the adjustment mechanism

Lightweight, very practical, do not fade or stretch for a long time. They have dust-repellent properties, making them easy to care for. They are distinguished by a huge variety of textures and colors, suitable for any design style.

The material is practical and durable, with an original, exotic look. Bamboo blinds are not a cheap pleasure, and therefore are used quite rarely

Ultra-fashionable blinds of an original look. Vertical slats consist of a set of threads; there are no weights or lower fixation. The adjustment mechanism allows you to move the slats to the side and rotate them around their axis. When closed, the blinds are a solid wall of threads that sway beautifully at the slightest air movement. Ideal for balconies with panoramic glazing

In order for the blinds on the balcony to look harmonious and provide only comfort, when choosing, you need to follow a few simple rules.

  1. For windows with aluminum frames and sliding structures, blinds mounted on the sashes are not suitable.

  2. Vertical blinds should be chosen for sliding windows, as hinged sashes will cause certain difficulties when opening.

  3. For balconies on the south side, roller blinds made of thick fabric would be the ideal solution, while on the north side, vertical blinds with translucent slats are more suitable.

  4. For balconies in ethnic, country and chalet styles, it is best to choose wooden or bamboo blinds; the minimalist style is more suitable for simple plastic ones.

  5. If the balcony is used as a relaxation area, use light-colored fabric blinds to add coziness.

  6. On a small balcony, floor-length blinds would be inappropriate; it is better to use small horizontal models mounted in the window opening.

How to properly attach blinds

It is not at all difficult to install blinds yourself, but to do this you need to decide on the method of fastening and take very accurate measurements. Horizontal and roll structures can be fastened in two ways - with and without drilling. Vertical blinds are installed only by drilling.

Taking measurements

First you need to determine where the blinds will be placed - on the glass itself, in the window opening or on the wall.

  1. On the doors: The width of the blinds is equal to the distance between the glass beads + 30 mm. The length corresponds to the height of the glass unit.
  2. In the window opening: The width of the blinds is equal to the width of the double-glazed window + the thickness of the side seals. The length corresponds to the height of the glass unit + 20 mm. In this case, the length of the lace should be equal to 2/3 of the height of the window opening, and the cornice should not touch the slopes and hinges.
  3. On the wall: The width of the blinds is equal to the width of the opening + 10 cm, the length is chosen arbitrarily. There must be at least 50 mm above the opening for the location of the cornice.

Installation of cornice with drilling

First, let's look at procedure for installing the structure on the window sashes.

Step 1. The curtain rod of the blinds is applied to the upper edge of the frame and the attachment points are marked with a pencil.

Step 2. Very carefully drill small holes at the marked points.

Step 3. Brackets are applied to the holes, aligned, tightly screwed to the frame with self-tapping screws and the blinds are hung.

Step 4. On the lower part of the frame, under the glazing beads, mark the exit points of the fishing line threaded through the slats of the blinds, and drill the same neat holes.

Step 5. The ends of the fishing line are inserted into the plugs, and the plugs are inserted into the holes in the frame, resulting in tension in the fishing line.

Now let's consider method of attaching a cornice to a wall and ceiling.

Step 1. The unfolded blinds are applied to the wall above the window opening and the optimal height for installing the cornice is determined. Make marks for the fasteners and check their horizontal position with a level.

The same is done when mounting on the ceiling.

Step 2. Holes are drilled in the marked places and dowels are inserted.

Step 3. Screw the brackets with screws, after which the blinds are hung. Check the operation of the mechanism by opening and closing the plates.

Installation without drilling

Without drilling, you can only attach light, small blinds - plastic, fabric, paper. Most often, this method is used for roller and pleated blinds. If the window sashes are solid, use double-sided tape; for opening sashes, mounting on brackets is more suitable.

Step 1. The back side of the cornice is degreased and an anti-slip gasket is glued.

Installation of horizontal blinds without drilling - with double-sided tape

Step 2. Fasteners are inserted into the cornice on both sides and hung on the open sash until the brackets stop.

Installation of horizontal blinds without drilling - on L-shaped hooks

Step 3. The lower edge of the sash is degreased and holders are glued at a distance slightly less than the width of the blinds.

Now, when lowering the slats, the lower edge of the blinds will be fixed by holders and fit tightly to the glass. When using adhesive tape, all surfaces must first be degreased, otherwise the structure will not last long. For the same reason, adhesive tape should be chosen only of the highest quality.

How to decide which blinds are best for a balcony if the market is replete with a variety of materials and models? What principles should we follow in this case and what should we pay special attention to?

First, let’s define what “blinds for windows on a balcony” are, and what are they for? These are so-called curtains, consisting of a number of interconnected plates (lamellas), which can be arranged vertically or horizontally. These structures do not prevent the flow of fresh air, but perfectly protect the room from the penetration of the hot rays of the sun. Installing blinds on the balcony will also help to hide from prying eyes.

Based on the materials from which blinds are made, they are divided into:

  • fabric;
  • plastic;
  • aluminum;
  • wooden.

According to the location of the slats, blinds are:

  • horizontal;
  • vertical

There are also roll balcony blinds, which, thanks to their originality, have recently become increasingly in demand. To figure it out and understand which blinds are best for a balcony, let’s take a closer look at all the options.

Materials used for the manufacture of blinds

Plastic. The most common option. Plastic curtains for balconies are distinguished by their convenient design, affordable price and good quality. They are easy to care for, easy and quick to clean.

Tree. For greater resistance to moisture, wooden slats are pre-treated with varnish. Blinds made of this material have a special handle for fixing the length. This option is more suitable for small balconies.

Textile. Polyester is preferred. The material is easy to clean and practically does not fade in the sun. Polyester blinds have a long service life.

Metal. Easy to maintain and inexpensive, aluminum balcony blinds are not susceptible to environmental influences. They are reliable and practical.

Vertical blinds

These structures consist of plastic or aluminum cornice, control cord, connecting chain, weights, runners and slats. The lamellas can be made of any material.

Vertical blinds for balconies are attached to the wall or ceiling using brackets. To do this, it is enough to drill 2-3 holes. Old slats can be easily replaced with new ones. The closing method is optional:

  • from right to left;
  • from the center to the sides;
  • from left to right.

The vertical lamellas are assembled into an accordion and easily rotate around their axis. The opinion that vertical blinds are installed mainly in office premises is erroneous.

A huge selection of textures, materials and colors allows you to decorate any interior with these designs.

When choosing vertical blinds for your balcony, pay special attention to the following details:

  • It is better to choose an aluminum cornice. The tendency of plastic to deform can lead to failure of the entire mechanism.
  • The plastic chain with which the vertical strips are connected at the bottom should only be white. Plastic with a yellowish tint indicates its low quality.
  • All-plastic weights have proven themselves better than all others. They don't rust.
These designs will be an excellent option for blinds on a balcony with sliding windows.

Horizontal blinds

A huge plus of horizontal blinds for the balcony is the ability to install them directly on the window frame. In this case, they fit very tightly to the glass and do not dangle even when the window is open.

Numerous slats, connected to each other by fastening elements, easily open and close, gathering into an accordion.

The main advantages of horizontal curtains for the balcony:

  • simple and easy care;
  • take up little space without visually reducing the area of the room;
  • If desired, they can be mounted on the upper slope of the window opening, wall or window frame.

Advice! By installing horizontal blinds on each window frame, you can place flowers or other items on the windowsill and make the windows easy to open and close.

Roller blinds

Such designs consist of a special shaft on which it is carefully wound tightly. The shaft itself can be attached, depending on the circumstances, to a window frame, ceiling or wall. Roller blinds on the balcony, installed directly on the window sash, are very convenient and do not interfere at all when closing or opening the window frames.

The variety of color shades and textures of roll filters allows you to create original interiors. Blinds can be translucent or very thick. Attractive, reliable, convenient roller blinds on the balcony provide comfort and coziness in the room.

It is important! When choosing roller blinds, purchase designs where the shaft with fabric wound on it is hidden inside the box. In this case, the canvas will be reliably protected from dust.

Choice of blinds. What should you pay attention to?

  • The length of balcony blinds with sliding frames should be slightly less than the length of the frame itself (5-10 cm).
  • When choosing a specific model, you need to pay attention to the rotating mechanism. Its moving parts should not creak. The mechanism should function smoothly, creating only comfort during daily use.
  • Fabric vertical blinds will be the most suitable option for plastic frames. In this case, you can cover windows of any size and easily adjust the lighting level.
  • Unusually impressive roller blinds in a wide variety of colors can entail large expenses. But they will be an excellent solution for a long time and for any balconies.
  • The length of the blinds should not reach the floor. These designs successfully save room space and create comfort in it. With such a huge assortment, you can create the most striking interior masterpieces.

What kind of blinds should I install on a balcony or loggia? The answer is clear - any. It all depends on your taste. There are, of course, some restrictions. For example:

  • Sash-mounted blinds are inappropriate on balconies with aluminum or sliding windows. Otherwise, the sliding frames simply will not open, and blinds cannot be installed on aluminum at all.
  • Horizontal blinds can be used to regulate the flow of light. They can be fully raised - if you need a lot of light. And if you just turn the slats, only a small backlight is created.
  • Vertical blinds for the balcony are similar to traditional curtains, as they cover the entire window opening. The only disadvantage of such structures is that to open the window, you first need to open the blinds. And with the shutters open, it is impossible to close the blinds.
  • Roller blinds will be the most successful option for balconies that are located on the sunny side. A fairly dense fabric will not allow the sun's rays to pass through. If sunlight is a rare guest on the balcony, then it is better to choose blinds made of translucent fabric.
  • An interesting option for decorating an inexpensive balcony interior would be to install plastic blinds on PVC windows. High quality plastic does not deform, so it will last quite a long time.
  • Wooden blinds go well with window frames made of natural wood. The downside of these designs is their fairly high cost.
  • Aluminum blinds for balconies are lightproof, fire resistant and durable. But they make a lot of noise when opening and closing.
  • It is not recommended to choose vertical slats for a small balcony space.
  • For a loggia with sliding windows, both vertical and horizontal models with ceiling mounting are suitable.
  • For loggias located on the south side, it is advisable to use products made from denser materials.
  • Small balcony windows are best decorated with horizontal structures, with a type of glass mounting.

Types of structures

There are several varieties, each of which allows you to choose the ideal solution for decorating your loggia.

Horizontal

Quite a simple and convenient model. This design does not take up much space, looks weightless and does not overload the space of even the smallest balcony.

The photo shows a loggia with horizontal slats on the windows.

Vertical

They are made of plastic, fabric, aluminum, and have many shades and colors. When completely closed, they resemble curtains and perfectly protect the loggia from the sun.

Lamella material

For the manufacture of lamellas, various types of materials with very different textures and densities are used.

Fabric

Lightweight, resistant to sunlight and not subject to deformation. The only disadvantage of fabric models is their rapid contamination.

The photo shows a loggia with fabric vertical slats.

Plastic

They are easy to care for, practically do not fade in the sun and do not lose their appearance over time. However, lamellas made of inexpensive plastic deteriorate very quickly due to the fact that they are exposed to mechanical stress.

Aluminum

Strong and durable metal slats are easy to clean and are not afraid of moisture. A small drawback is that such structures create noise when opening and closing the doors.

The photo shows aluminum slats on the loggia.

Wooden

They look very impressive and expensive. They do not fade in the sun and do not dry out. Natural bamboo products look original and exotic and instantly attract attention.

Paper

Pleated paper blinds are a universal and multifunctional option for decorating balcony windows. Indoors, they create a unique comfort.

Types of blinds for loggias

Balcony blinds not only allow you to control the level of light, but also stylishly decorate the room.

  • Pleated. They are a design with pleated fabric in the form of an accordion with folds of two centimeters.
  • Classic. Plain vertical and horizontal sun protection slats will be the most optimal solution for creating a modern and practical look for your loggia.
  • Photoblinds. Models with bright and clear images printed using photo printing. They will add a special mood to the balcony room.
  • Multi-textured. They are a universal option that combines the advantages of fabric and plastic slats.

For windows of various shapes and devices

Balcony blinds allow windows to gain a more thoughtful, deep and stylish look.

Sliding

Both horizontal and vertical models with a ceiling profile are suitable for sliding windows.

Panoramic windows

For such window openings, the current choice would be vertical slats to the floor, which can reach up to 6 meters in length or more. Panoramic windows on a small French balcony are decorated with horizontal slats and pleated blinds. They look light and make the room more spacious.

Color spectrum

Various shades create a sophisticated color scheme in the room.

Multicolored

Quite an interesting solution that allows you to enliven and add variety to a laconic and austere balcony space.

Blue

The blue color evokes associations with the sea and gives a feeling of coolness. Therefore, blue or light blue slats are especially suitable for loggias located on the sunny south side.

White

White models reflect light well and return it to the room, thereby creating a visual enlargement of the small balcony space.

Beige

Classic design option. Calm and gentle beige on plastic windows does not have an irritating effect and looks very organic.

Reds

They attract attention and look quite stylish. But on a small balcony, dark red slats will make the space overloaded.

How to hang blinds?

Without drilling, blinds can be secured in the following ways:

  1. The structure can be hung using a special tape that has a double-sided adhesive surface. Before installation, it is important to degrease the balcony frame and check that it is not cold.
  2. There is also the option of mounting on special brackets that are placed over the window sash and blinds are attached to them.

Specialization: Capital construction work (laying a foundation, erecting walls, constructing a roof, etc.). Internal construction work (laying internal communications, rough and fine finishing). Hobbies: mobile communications, high technology, computer equipment, programming.

Recently, at the request of one of my friends who lives on the top floor, I had to worry about choosing blinds for the balcony. She needed products that could be installed on 3-meter-wide aluminum sliding windows and that would effectively protect against the sun and the indiscreet glances of neighbors from the opposite house.

I told her which models are best to use and how to install them yourself. I think such instructions will be useful to all readers, especially since I described, in my opinion, the best models on the market that are suitable for installation on windows or on a balcony door.

Benefits of using blinds

A special feature of balconies and loggias is the large glazing area of these premises. That is, the windows in them occupy most of the walls. Therefore, they are in great need of light-control structures that will limit the access of sunlight to the rooms and hide the people there from indiscreet views from the street.

Of course, you can use ordinary textile curtains, but I always advise my clients to install blinds on loggias and balconies. They perform their assigned tasks more effectively, as they have the following advantages:

  1. Convenience. Blinds for balcony windows always have controls that allow you to flexibly regulate the amount of light entering inside. Using laces or handles, these products can either be completely unfolded, creating twilight (or impenetrable darkness) in the room, or rolled up, providing 100% visibility.

Blinds for sliding windows performed especially well. In this case, the light-protective structures can be attached to the ceiling, and they themselves will not interfere with the movement of the frames.

  1. Privacy. I recommend using blinds when there is a bedroom or other living space on the balcony. In this case, the dense material of the lamellas will ensure complete impermeability of the windows in the evening. While the fabric of the curtains can be see-through.

  1. Ventilation. Blinds on the balcony do not prevent fresh air from entering the room. It creates the most comfortable microclimate for people, which promotes both productive work and pleasant rest.

  1. A wide range of. I have personally come across a huge number of models on sale, which differ from each other in shape, size, color, material, price and many other factors. Even if you are a perfectionist at heart, you will still choose the ideal option for yourself that will organically fit into the interior of the loggia or balcony.

  1. Easy to install. Even a novice master will understand how to hang blinds on balcony windows. These are not curtains, for the installation of which there are a huge number of not so obvious ways.

  1. Versatility. Balcony blinds are a universal design that can be used not only to decorate windows, but also to decorate a balcony, arrange a partition, close a cabinet, and so on.

I hope the listed factors are enough to sway you towards choosing these particular light-protective structures.

Types of blinds for balconies

Now I’ll tell you how to choose blinds. More precisely not so. I’d rather describe to you the technical characteristics and features of various models of light-protective structures, and you can do it yourself.

By material

First of all, I advise you to choose sun protection structures based on the material from which the slats are made. After all, their technical characteristics and ease of subsequent operation directly depend on this.

In my practice, I have encountered the following varieties:

  1. Plastic blinds for a loggia or balcony. This is the most popular option, believe my experience. And such popularity of light-protective plastic structures is due to the fact that they have the ideal combination of affordable cost and excellent technical characteristics. Especially for the balcony.

Plastic blinds are quick and easy to clean, do not break under slight mechanical stress, and can be of different colors and decorated with patterns. They can not only protect the loggia from the sun, but also become the central element of its design.

Here it is important not to save money and not to purchase very cheap models of their low-quality polymers. Otherwise, the lamellas will either break or turn yellow. In any case, they will not last very long, so you will soon have to purchase a new model. So you won't get any benefit.

  1. Wooden blinds for balconies. These are expensive models that will make the room truly luxurious. They are perfect for use on balconies, since the wooden slats are treated with special compounds that protect the natural material from moisture and direct sunlight.

The disadvantage of this solution is, first of all, the high price. In addition, the structures themselves have a very significant weight, so you will have to take care of high-quality fastening of light-protective structures on window frames, ceilings or walls.

If you still prefer wooden blinds, do not buy products with large slats covering the entire length of the balcony. It is better to arrange several shorter and lighter sections that are easier to manage.

It is better to install wooden slats complete with the same windows. Or, as a last resort, plastic structures decorated to look like wood. Ordinary plastic or aluminum does not combine with noble wood.

  1. Fabric blinds on the loggia. They can be made from various fabrics, but I advise you to pay attention to polyester, the performance properties of which are ideal for use on balconies.

This material tolerates exposure to direct sunlight well and is easily cleaned of dirt. Also buy blinds made from high-density fabric: they provide better privacy and have a longer service life. Therefore, their higher price is completely justified.

  1. Metal blinds for balconies. The option, in my opinion, is far from the best. Yes, metal slats are highly resistant to ultraviolet radiation and moisture, they are very strong and durable. But when regulated, they make a lot of noise, which is unlikely to please anyone.

I advise you to buy blinds with metal slats only if you will use the balcony as a storage room, workshop or something similar.

Choosing the right material is not all you need to know when buying blinds. It is also necessary to decide on the design features, which we will talk about later.

By design

So which designs are the most common? Personally, I came across the following:

  1. Horizontal blinds for the loggia. Ideally combined with metal-plastic windows. They are placed separately on each glazing section, which allows flexible adjustment of the light level.

They are easy to operate, easy to maintain and allow you to completely block the access of light from the street. The only negative for me personally is the very utilitarian appearance. Although it can be diversified by ordering slats of different colors or applying a pattern to them.

  1. Vertical blinds for the balcony. They differ from the previous version in the location of the lamellas. They create greater coziness on the balcony and allow you to conveniently regulate the amount of sunlight entering the room.

The photo shows vertical blinds for the balcony.

In addition, with the help of vertical blinds you can protect your balcony from the indiscreet glances of your neighbors.

The slats of these products can be made of plastic, aluminum or fabric. They are convenient to operate using special cords, and they can be cleaned with household detergents.

  1. Facade blinds. The difference from the other types that I’m talking about here is that they are installed from the street side. Accordingly, they are distinguished by increased strength and the ability to withstand destructive natural factors.

Such blinds serve not so much as a light-protective structure, but as a way to protect the room from unauthorized entry. Blinds usually form a solid façade. After closing the slats, they prevent strangers from entering the room through.

Another plus is the ability to completely isolate the balcony room from sunlight. For example, in the summer you can adjust the tilt of the slats and create the desired lighting and temperature in the room. I installed such a structure on the balcony, which the owners intended to use as a greenhouse.

The slats of façade blinds are most often made of stainless steel or aluminum. Actually, I didn’t use any other options.

  1. Pleated. Such blinds are made of textiles, which are folded into an accordion in folds of several centimeters. These designs are distinguished by their high cost, which, however, is quite understandable.

Pleated blinds have a huge number of advantages:

  • can be mounted on windows of any shape (semicircular, triangular, trapezoidal, and so on);
  • can be connected to electronic control systems;
  • provide both the proper level of privacy and effective regulation of the amount of sunlight penetrating onto the balcony;
  • ideally combined with window frames made of any materials.

You can buy pleated blinds of any color, including those with a printed pattern. And then they will organically fit into the style of your chosen balcony design.

  1. Rolled. Light-protective structures, which many refer to as both blinds and curtains. Structurally, they are a roll of fabric mounted on a shaft at the top of the window, which can be unfolded if desired, limiting the access of light into the room.

Roller blinds are inexpensive, fit tightly to the window glass and come in a wide variety of colors.

The advantage of these blinds, in my opinion, is the possibility of using window sills. The fabric itself is close to the surface of the glass, so it doesn’t interfere with placing whatever you want on the windowsill.

  1. Roman curtains. They belong to the category of blinds, as they have special control systems that make them easy to open and close, regulating the access of sunlight to the balcony.

Structurally, they consist of a strip of fabric, which is divided into sections by several slats moving along side guides. After installation on balcony windows, you can open and close the curtains using ropes. In this case, the fabric will not sag.

The textiles used in these are impregnated with special compounds that protect them from the sun, dust, moisture and other negative factors. So you are guaranteed a long service life while maintaining an excellent appearance.

  1. Bamboo blinds. Unlike wooden ones, they are a roll of bamboo fiber, which not only protects from the sun, but also decorates the interior of the balcony.

The disadvantages are also heavy weight and high cost. And they do not fit all window frames.

As for me, I prefer classic white plastic blinds. But I have prepared some tips for you to help you make the best choice. About them - below.

So, when choosing blinds for a balcony, consider the following:

  1. Classic horizontal blinds, which are attached directly to the doors, cannot be installed on sliding aluminum frames. You need to select models mounted on walls or ceilings.

  1. For lovers of sophisticated design, I would recommend pleated blinds. They look especially organic on large windows, which are typical for balconies.
  2. Buy roller blinds that are mounted on rails. Then, when opening the doors for ventilation, the curtains will not hang and dangle. You can generally purchase cassette curtains, in which the roll is disguised in a special cassette.

Balcony blinds are the optimal solution for creating a cozy and modern loggia. A wide variety of such curtains allows you to find the ideal option for a specific interior. Narrow, wide, smooth, textured, with or without a pattern, made from various materials and at a variety of prices - the variety will delight housewives. It is quite easy to choose an elegant design today thanks to a huge selection of models and manufacturers.

Features and Benefits

A huge plus of blinds: they do not lose their relevance over time and look organic in any room. Previously used as sun protection in offices and cafes, today they are widely used. They are practical, look neat, and are easy to use. This design consists of long slats connected in one row, the rotation of which is adjusted using a simple mechanism.

The slats are arranged horizontally or vertically, depending on their type. Blinds are similar to curtains, but more practical and functional. They do not wrinkle and are quick and easy to clean. Vertical models are impregnated with a special solution that repels dust and dirt. The design is easily adjustable: the slats can be completely closed, opened, or adjusted to the level of lighting on the balcony as desired.

If the plates are closed, this does not interfere with air circulation and protects the room from prying eyes. The design allows you to freely open the window for ventilation. Regardless of the type, blinds are easy to install yourself. A large selection of shapes, textures, and colors are among the advantages of the design. Models are mounted in a window opening, on the ceiling, or to the wall.

Despite the objective advantages (protection from sun rays, aesthetics), they have their drawbacks. Plastic models turn yellow over time in the sun, deteriorate, and fall apart. If they are actively used, the mechanism quickly breaks down. Budget slats can bend, break, and sag.

Kinds

Blinds are divided into types according to two criteria - materials of manufacture and location of the slats.

Horizontal. The most budget option. Most often, this type of structure is installed on a window with a balcony door or on balcony frames separately for each double-glazed window. Horizontal models are simple and consist of a cornice with an adjustment mechanism, slats, and a control cord. They are fixed using a bar attached to the bottom.

The horizontal model is convenient if there are flower pots on the windowsills. The design does not take up much space, looks weightless, and does not block the space of window openings. The slats reliably protect from the sun and dust. Horizontal models are easy to clean with soapy water and dry quickly. When washing, do not wet the cornice, otherwise the mechanism will quickly become unusable.

Vertical. The design consists of an aluminum or plastic cornice, vertical slats connected by a chain with runners, weights and a control cord. The slats rotate around their axis, and if they are opened, they are assembled like an accordion. Vertical blinds can be 3 meters or 6 meters high, depending on the window parameters.

They open in several ways: from right to left, from left to right, from the center in both directions. The structure is mounted on the ceiling or wall. The slats can be made of plastic, fabric, aluminum, and come in different shades and colors. For balconies, designers advise using models with patterns that give the interior atmosphere and comfort.

When closed, vertical models look like curtains, so they are ideal for decorating balconies. Among the disadvantages: they take up space, it is easy to damage the slats, and sometimes it becomes difficult to open windows.

Rolled. Outwardly they resemble curtains, since they do not consist of separate strips. Roller blinds are solid. They consist of a thin roller on which the fabric is wound, and a mechanism with a chain for control. Closed models have an additional box, 2 shafts, 2 strips.

They protect the fabric from sagging and wrinkles. Curtains are attached to the frame, wall, ceiling. They are made from material of different densities. Some models are transparent and transmit light well, have different textures and colors.

Pleated. Blinds are horizontal, but differ from classic ones. The design is a metal profile (plastic), between which pleated fabric is fixed. The model is controlled using a cord or chain. When closed, they do not allow light to pass through; they are attached to the glass contour, window opening or frame.

The design is perfect for non-standard window openings. They look impressive and stylish on the loggia. Pleats transform even the simplest interior.

Colors

Thanks to modern production technologies and a large selection of models, shapes and colors of blinds, the buyer can choose the most suitable option for a specific balcony interior. Today, color models (rainbow), gradient, tricolor have appeared on the market. The most popular and classic color in the minimalist style is white.

Black structures are a spectacular but heavy option for a balcony. Designers advise paying attention to soft, rich shades: aqua, green, chocolate, peach. The color depends on the model and material, as well as the general situation on the loggia.

How to choose

The length of balcony blinds should be five to ten centimeters less than the window frame. When choosing a specific model, pay attention to the mechanism. It should not make creaking sounds, but function smoothly without causing discomfort. The best option for a plastic frame is vertical fabric models. They perfectly cover a window of any size and easily adjust the lighting level.

For the loggia it is better to choose spectacular models, colored, with a pattern. Vertical designs are ideal for sliding windows. When choosing blinds, remember that they should not reach the floor.

When choosing a design, pay attention to the material. Ideally, the cornice should be made of aluminum, not plastic. The high-quality chain connecting the vertical slats is white, without a yellowish tint. The design of blinds is one of the main criteria for making the right choice. The interior of the balcony will depend on the color, style, and pattern. Ideal colors for a loggia: white, milky, beige or bright, mysterious, but not gloomy.

How to choose?

Use the following tips:

  • Models that are mounted on sashes are not suitable for sliding windows with aluminum frames.
  • Vertical structures are suitable for sliding windows on the balcony.
  • Rolled models made of dense material are ideal for the windows of loggias located on the south side, and vertical models with thin slats for the north side.
  • Bamboo or wooden structures are suitable for balconies decorated in ethnic style and chalets. The minimalist style corresponds to laconic plastic models.
  • If the loggia is used as a place to relax, it is wiser to choose light fabric blinds.
  • It is better to design the windows of a small balcony with horizontal structures that are attached to the glass.

Materials

The material of construction determines the price, design, durability, ease of installation, operation and many other factors.

Metal the structures are strong and durable, easy to clean from dust, do not deteriorate when exposed to sunlight, and are not afraid of moisture. The disadvantage of iron models is that they rattle when opening/closing, have a simple design, and fade over time.

Plastic easy to use, these are inexpensive models, not heavy in weight, and are not afraid of moisture. White lamellas turn yellow over time, crack, break, and the mechanism often fails.

Wooden. They look expensive and look impressive. The wooden structure does not fade in the sun and does not dry out. The disadvantage of wooden slats is that they are heavy, which leads to sagging and problems with the mechanism.

Fabric. Practical blinds, lightweight, practically do not fade in the sun, do not deform, and are suitable for different interiors and design styles.

Bamboo. Robust and durable designs. They look original and exotic. Such models are expensive, so they are rarely used for decorating loggias.

Thread. Fashionable blinds that have an original design. The slats are made of threads without weights and lower fixation. Using the mechanism, the structure can be easily moved to the side and rotated. These vertical models are suitable for decorating balconies with panoramic glazing.

How to install it yourself

Installing the structure on the balcony windows yourself is not difficult. First, decide on the method of attaching the model and take measurements. Remember that they must be accurate. Roller and horizontal blinds are mounted with or without drilling. Installation of vertical ones is carried out only by drilling. Next, decide where the structure will be located: on the wall, in the window opening or on the glass.

Before hanging the structure, prepare the necessary tools. For installation you will need: an electric drill with a concrete drill of six mm, self-tapping screws and dowels, a simple pencil, a ruler, a level, a tape measure, a screwdriver, a screwdriver.

  • Check the complete set of the structure, lay out all the parts on the table. The kit should include universal fasteners, screws and blinds.
  • Attach the structure to the wall or ceiling, mark the installation location on the left and right with a pencil. Use a level and ruler to determine the exact installation location. You need to retreat two centimeters from each mark and also mark the place for fasteners with a pencil.
  • Attach the left and right fasteners to the marks, mark the drilling points for the screws. Drill the marks with a drill. The depth should be no more than four centimeters.
  • Screw the brackets using self-tapping screws to the wall, window frame or ceiling.
  • When installing blinds more than two meters wide, install intermediate fasteners.
  • Insert the structure into the upper cornice and close the bracket locks.
  • If the horizontal model is mounted in a window opening, use the following installation tips.
  • As in the previous installation recommendation, check the complete set of blinds. It should include two brackets, screws and an assembled structure.
  • Try the curtains on the window opening and check whether the design interferes with opening and closing the window.
  • Attach the right and left fasteners to the upper inner part of the window opening, step back two centimeters from the wall towards the center, make marks at the holes. Thus, you should get two marks on the right and left.
  • Using a drill, you need to make holes according to the marks; their depth should be three to four centimeters.
  • Screw the left and right fasteners to the top of the window opening with self-tapping screws.
  • Insert the blinds into the top ledge and close the locks.
  • The vertical design requires effort during installation, but it is also possible to do it yourself. It all depends on the length and height of the model.
