Glazing. Instructions for glazing wooden windows How to install glass in wooden windows

Anyone may need the help of a professional glazier. Broken glass in a window or door becomes a serious problem that requires an urgent solution. High-quality, safe installation of the element can only be performed by a qualified technician.

Replacing glass in a wooden window has certain specifics and requires experience and knowledge. To insert glass, it is important to accurately determine its dimensions and cut the sheet so that it fits perfectly into the grooves. Glass that is too large cannot be installed; a smaller size will not provide proper tightness; the gap will cause increased heat loss and dust penetration into the room. Therefore, a specialist must replace broken or cracked window glass.

Many apartments and houses now have plastic windows installed. But structures made of wood are not yet uncommon. In them, glass damage can occur not only from an impact. It is enough to open it and start washing the old window, in which the glazing beads and sashes have rotted, so that the glass falls out under light pressure. In this case, you will have to carry out a full repair of wooden windows.

  • Arrival of the measurer. The specialist will take measurements and determine the type of material needed.
  • Glass cutting. The fabric of the required size is cut out in the workshop.
  • Installation (insertion) of glass. The specialist installs a new element and, if necessary, repairs the window.
  • You can make the measurement yourself. There is no need to be afraid of sizing inaccuracies. Our specialists always cut the canvas with a small margin to make adjustments on site. In this case, replacing glass in a wooden window is faster.

Cost of glass insertion

The cost of glass replacement depends on the type of work, material, and is determined individually. Approximate cost of work.

How to insert glass using a bead

Broken glass in a wooden frame is very easy to replace yourself. There are two methods of fastening - using putty and using a bead. Here we will talk about the second one.

Tools and materials:

2. Wooden glazing beads

3. Nails, a hammer and a small piece of cardboard

4. Sealant

1. Clean the fold from any remaining glass and debris. The window frame must be clean and dry.

2. Cut out the glazing beads, adjusting them exactly to the size of the window opening.

3. Apply sealant around the perimeter of the rebate to a third of its depth. Gently press the glass to ensure a tight seal.

4. We nail the glazing beads into place over the sealant, recessing the heads of the nails into the wood. To avoid accidentally breaking the glass, place a sheet of cardboard or plastic on it in this place. Please note: the inner edge of the glazing bead must be adjacent to the glass without a gap - otherwise the window will rattle from the wind and allow cold to pass through.

5. Wipe off any excess sealant. The window is ready!

p.s.

Windows break and glass shatters. You arrive at your dacha like this - and there, work is already waiting - your neighbor’s window has broken. Glass needs to be inserted. And where are the watchmen looking?! After all, the glass itself couldn’t break... Or maybe the ice squeezed out in winter?!

Well, you’ll have to remember your old carpentry skills, take a tool and “roll up your sleeves” to insert the window glass into the wooden frame! Well, you can’t refuse an old friend!

What am I doing? First you need to remove all the glass fragments - both from the floor and from the ground, and most importantly from the frame, so as not to interfere with the work. After them I remove the nails and old putty (down to the wood). If the chisel does not take it, then I soften it with a heated soldering iron.

Since I already have to work on the frame, I cover it with drying oil, and after drying, I prime it with liquid oil white. When the primer has dried, I coat the lower edges of the fold with a thin layer of putty and compact it with a ruler on all four sides to a thickness of 1-3 mm. The method of fastening glass in this way is more complicated than with single putty, when the glass laid in the folds is simply secured with pins or nails, after which the folds are coated with putty.

But it is more reliable, as it provides greater tightness of the frame and reduces heat loss! So, if you want to pay less for heating your country house, work hard, especially since there is nothing complicated about it!

The next step is to cut out the window glass in dimensions slightly smaller than the window frame - about 3-4 mm. I make sure that the glass is not too compressed and does not crack on its own in the heat. I insert the glass starting from the bottom edge. I put two or three matches to ensure the required gap. And then I lift the top edge and press it against the binding.

I use small nails or pins as fasteners. Since I don’t change glass every day, for the sake of glass integrity, I poke holes in the wooden frame with an awl, insert nails into them and press the heads with a chisel. I insert the nails at an angle of about 45° so that their heads do not protrude from the putty. Sometimes in winter ice builds up between the glass and the frame, and it can squeeze out the bottom edge of the glass, so reinforce it with more nails than the top and side edges (window windows are pressed with pins every 15-20 cm).

Now there are good quick-drying putties on sale, but since you need to go to the city to get them, I prepare the window putty myself and knead it. I cut off a piece of putty with a knife, the same chisel, or, if available, with a narrow spatula, and tightly fill the fold. I start caulking from the top of the window. From time to time I level and smooth the putty with the same tool. At the same time, I remove excess and also check the strength of adhesion to glass and wood. But let the neighbor paint the dried putty along with the frame himself! I hope that now everyone can insert window glass into a wooden frame.

How to insert glass into a window? The question is basically simple, but still? Let's take a look now!

Marking

First of all, keep in mind that if you just bought glass, and at the same time, the temperature outside was minus, then it is better to wait a couple of hours for the work to be carried out, and let the glass remain at room temperature for now.

Inserting a glass unit

So, in order to insert glass into a broken window, you must first cut it to the appropriate size.

Remember! The gap between the fold (side) and the edge must be at least 2 mm!

That is, if your dimensions between the folds are 500 mm in width and 800 in length, then your glass should be 496 by 796 mm. These dimensions will protect the glass and prevent it from cracking in the event of linear expansion.

By the way! Often broken glass can be due to misalignment if the installation is not carried out correctly, and that is why it is important to follow.

cutting

Before you think about how to insert glass into a frame, make sure you know how to cut it.

To do this, place the glass on a flat surface, take a metal ruler and a glass cutter.

Applying a ruler to the cutting line, place the glass cutter in the far corner and move it towards you. The pressure must be sufficient, otherwise it will not be possible to break the glass, but if you “press” it, then it will immediately crack.

That’s why it’s best to practice it yourself on separate pieces first.

Insert

Inserting glass into a window is quite easy, see for yourself:

  • The insertion is done before painting;
  • All dirt, remnants of sealant, putty are removed from the folds;
  • The folds are degreased;
  • If you are inserting glass into a wooden frame, it would be a good idea to seal it;
  • Next, either a two-millimeter layer of sealant or putty is applied to the folds, which will ensure a tight fit of the parts to each other;
  • Insert the glass first with the bottom edge, then finally press it against the entire frame;
  • Secure everything with glazing beads (a nail spacing of 25 mm is considered the most reliable);
  • Carefully remove excess putty or sealant protruding beyond the beads.

That's it, you know how the insertion is done. But what if you need to know how to insert glass into a plastic window?

Double-glazed window

The best thing here, undoubtedly, is to replace the double-glazed window with a new one, and at the same time. However, this is not always financially possible, and if the insert is needed for a utility room, such as a garage, barn, then you can try to do it yourself.

For this:

  • The glazing beads are removed from the plastic frame;
  • The glass unit is removed;
  • The remains of broken glass are carefully removed from the glass unit;
  • The distance frame is cleaned and degreased;
  • Place double-sided tape on the frame;
  • Carefully (you won’t be able to do this a second time) place the glass on the tape to the spacer frame;
  • Insert the glass unit into the frame and secure it with glazing beads.

This is how you can insert glass into a window, both wooden and plastic. And in general, there are no unsolvable problems, the main thing is that there is a desire to solve them! And how to make slopes,

There may be several reasons for replacing glass: if the old glass began to rattle from passing cars, and the second, more annoying option, if a window accidentally broke.

Glazing wooden frames is not a complicated process, so it is not at all necessary to call a specialist; you can do everything yourself. And if you don’t know how to insert glass into a frame with your own hands, let’s look at the steps to replace it.

Removing old glass

First, you will need a knife or chisel, masking tape and knitted gloves to remove the fragments.

Replacing broken glass in a window

Knitted or leather gloves are needed to reliably protect your hands from cuts. Remove the shards and seal the remaining ones in the frame with tape. Then remove the glazing beads, which are designed to hold the glass to the frame, and the nails. Remove the putty with a knife or sharp object if the planks were sealed with it. After this, the remaining fragments will not be difficult to remove.

Remove beads carefully and slowly so they can be reused. If you were unable to remove them carefully, prepare new planks of exactly the same size.

Also use a knife to remove the layer of putty or sealant located under the glazing beads. The layer is designed to completely seal the joints and soften the planks so that they and the glass do not touch each other. The sealant protects the canvas from possible damage when the window sashes slam shut.

For subsequent glass replacement work, you will need: a sheet of glass 3-4 mm thick, a tape measure, nails, a glass cutter, a small hammer and transparent sealant.

Measuring the size of broken glass

Before inserting glass into a wooden frame, you need to prepare it. The canvas is cut out with your own hands or ordered from workshops. It is cut 2-3 mm smaller than the window frame. That is, dense placement of glass in the frame is not acceptable. If it is inserted tightly, the window may crack when the wooden frame expands due to moisture.

The best way to cut glass

Ordinary glass is cut with a glass cutter - a special tool that leaves scratches on the surface in order to later break the cutting line.

Glass cutter is divided into:

1. Roller- a tool that presses a groove on the glass during cutting. It is the most common type among non-professionals. The glass cutter is made from a cobalt-tungsten alloy. The number of cutting rollers in it is up to 6 pieces. The quality of cutting depends on their number.

It is better to choose a tool with 3-6 rollers, since the rollers quickly grind down, which increases the number of scraps. Thick glass over 7 mm cannot be cut with a roller glass cutter.

2. Professional diamond is a tool in which a small industrial diamond is fixed. Compared to a roller cutter, a diamond glass cutter has a longer service life, up to 12 km of cutting.

The tetrahedral shape of the cutting edge can be pyramidal or curved. It will be difficult for inexperienced craftsmen to cut a blade with a diamond tool with a pyramidal shape. Because it is difficult to immediately select the desired cut angle.

It is better to start working with a glass cutter with a curved shape. If you choose the right angle, you will get an imperceptible scratch, and during its application you will hear a subtle ringing sound.

3. Oil- this is the same roller glass cutter, only equipped with an automatic oil supply function, which reduces the friction force during cutting. This increases the service life of the tool and ensures easy and smooth movement. The oil container is located in the handle. Refill with special oil intended for glass or kerosene.

To cut a round sheet, use a glass cutter specially designed for this purpose. The tool is somewhat reminiscent of a compass. It has a fulcrum - a fixing suction cup. A scale is attached to it, which adjusts the radius and roller.

When you don’t have a glass cutter at hand, you can cut the glass without a glass cutter - for this you should use sewing scissors. They cut in water and are convenient for cutting small shaped pieces. The achieved effect will of course be different, but in some cases it will help.

Glass cutting

Cutting fabric has its own characteristics that must be taken into account.

The sheet must be absolutely clean and dry before cutting. Place it on a flat work table, preferably covered with a cloth.

Mark the sides on the glass using a tape measure and marker. You can treat the cut line with machine oil.

How to cut glass with a glass cutter
I - diamond glass cutter; II – roller glass cutter;
1 – cutting with a diamond glass cutter (a, c – incorrect, b – correct);
2, 3 – cutting with a roller glass cutter

Without pressing too hard on the tool, draw along the line. The cut should be smooth and shallow. To do this, you can use a ruler, placing it slightly to the side of the marking line. The tool is passed along the line on the glass only once, that is, in one touch.

The pressure force depends on the type of glass cutter. The roller requires more pressure than the diamond, which leaves a shallow groove.

It is better to cut corrugated glass with a roller glass cutter. All others are preferable to diamond. You will not be able to cut tempered glass because it breaks, but cut patterned, corrugated and frosted glass from the smooth side.

The process of cutting tiles can be considered similar, which is also cut with a special tool - a tile cutter. We recommend an article with tips on choosing a tile cutter. You will definitely need to cut tiles when renovating a bathroom, where the floor and walls are often laid with tiles: http://vse-postroim-sami.ru/materials/flooring-tile/76_ukladka-kafelnoj-plitki/.

The cut is made from the edge of the sheet, without stopping towards itself. Cut the short side first and then the long side.

The location of the glass cutter affects the quality of the cut. The diamond one is held in the hand in a vertical position like a pencil, and the roller one should be perpendicular to the surface of the blade.

Now all that remains is to break the cut glass. Move it to the end of the work table and tap the glass cutter head on the cut from below, and then break it. To break off a narrow strip, take pliers; you can use the slots on the tool.

Breaking glass: a – by hand; b – glass cutter; c – pliers

If you need to cut out a circle, first mark it on a piece of fabric with a washable marker. Then run the glass cutter along the contour. Then tap it on the back side, cut the remainder into small pieces, tap it again and remove.

You will get perfectly smooth and not sharp corners by sanding them.

Installing glass in a broken window

Glazing a wooden window occurs in the reverse order. Apply silicone sealant around the perimeter of the glass. Insert it in the middle of the opening. Place matches on the bottom edge of the frame to create a gap. Apply sealant to the other side of the glass under the glazing bead.

Then nail the top bead, side strips and finally the bottom one to the frame.

Fastening glass to a wooden frame

Drive the nails parallel to the surface of the glass so that they do not damage it by getting into the corner of the panel. When hitting, press the hammer against the surface of the blade and hit it carefully.

After inserting the glass into the wooden window, remove any excess sealant. You can paint the new glazing bead before installation or along with the window frame.

Instructions for glazing wooden windows

Korovin Sergey Dmitrievich

Master of Architecture, graduated from Samara State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering. 11 years of experience in design and construction.

None of us is immune from troubles, and at one moment the glass in a wooden window of your house may break. In such a situation, the question arises about speedy repairs, but many experience certain difficulties with this. So, how is a wooden window glazed?

Tools and materials

  • Glass. You can immediately order glass cutting in a workshop, or you can cut it yourself. You should be especially careful with old glass that has been lying around for several years - various deformations will have already affected them and it will be difficult to cut them.
  • Glass cutter
  • Glass cutting table. The dimensions of its lid must be no less than the dimensions of the glass itself. It is very important that the surface is as flat as possible. Additionally, you can put an old blanket or cloth on the surface.

Zenzubel - a type of planer for cutting grooves

  • Chisel. Will be used to dismantle the old bead. Width – 1.5-2 cm.
  • Hacksaw for metal.
  • Roulette.
  • Nails 2-3 cm long. It is recommended to use copper-plated ones - they will last longer.
  • Window sealant.
  • Insulating tape.
  • Pliers.
  • Zenzubel.
  • Marker or other marking tool.
  • Removing old glass

    At the initial stage of dismantling, it is necessary to remove the old fastening. To do this, use a chisel, the sharp end of which is carefully inserted between the glass and the bead. This should be done close to one of the nails. You can start from the corner or from the middle of the bead.

    The bead is dismantled using a chisel

    After this, you should carefully turn the chisel to insert it as deeply as possible under the glazing bead. All that remains is to use it as a lever to remove the old fastener. Sometimes the glazing bead breaks at the attachment point (especially if it is old and rotten). In this case, it will need to be broken out piece by piece. The nails that ultimately remain in the frame are removed with pliers.

    Glass size measurement

    Window glass is not always rectangular, so simply measuring the height and width may not be enough. Experts proceed in a different way: they measure parameters on both sides and, if strong curvature is noticeable, then in the middle. To measure, use a special meter or tape measure; do not try to take measurements with a short school ruler - the result will be inaccurate.

    The easiest way to take measurements is with a tape measure.

    After this, you should measure the diagonals of the glass. Most often, the difference in size will be small - within 1% or 1 cm. In this case, you can ignore it and simply cut out a rectangular piece with the given parameters. If the difference turns out to be greater, then you won’t be able to discount it - be sure to take into account all the parameters when cutting. An important point: most often the glass is cut out to slightly smaller (literally a few millimeters) sizes.. This will avoid a number of installation problems without creating drafts.

    Glass cutting

    The easiest way is to order ready-made glass in a special workshop, then all that remains is to think about its transportation. On the other hand, if there are old stocks, then you can trim it yourself. If you don’t have such experience yet, you can practice on some scraps. Over time, you will be able to determine from one sound whether the glass has cut through or not.

    Cutting glass requires some skill

    If you plan to trim a fairly wide strip, you can break it off by hand, without additional tools. The only point is that you should not forget about protecting your hands; ordinary gloves can protect you from very serious cuts.. After you have gone through the glass with a glass cutter, you will need to move it to the edge of the table so that the cut strip protrudes about 1 cm. For greater reliability, you should tap the cut area from below. Then, with a sharp movement, press down from top to bottom, trying to bend the glass.

    A little advice: you can use a wooden block or a flat board as a ruler, but it is not recommended to use metal objects. Before starting work, you should thoroughly clean the cut area from dirt.

    Frame check

    An important stage, but for some reason missed by many. In some cases, the quarters selected for glass turn out to be uneven - there is a difference in depth. If the difference is minimal, then it’s okay, but in more serious cases the glass may simply break. To avoid such troubles, the frame needs to be trimmed. A tool called a zenzubel or folding hebel is used for this. You can try to get by with a regular plane, but then you will have to finish the corners with a chisel.

    Checking dimensions

    The next step is checking the dimensions. We insert the glass into the window opening. If it fits well, then you can move on to the next stage. If there is a noticeable overshoot of 1-2 mm, then it can be eliminated using the previously mentioned zenzubel. If the glass turns out to be smaller than the opening, and significantly, then you can additionally make thin linings in the right places.

    Fitting the glazing bead

    It's time to prepare the mount. The glazing bead is cut with a hacksaw and is most often done so that an angle of 45 degrees is formed at the ends. Most often, a miter box is used for marking, but instead of it, a regular construction corner can be used with equal success. In addition, those who wish can quickly make a miter box on their own from a couple of bars.

    Use a miter box to cut glazing beads at an angle of 45 degrees.

    All that remains is to mark the required length on the glazing bead and saw off the pieces. Experts recommend cutting on one side, then trying the material into the frame, marking the new length there and filing it. Note that a properly sawn glazing bead will stay in the frame even without nails (albeit not very firmly).

    In order not to confuse the pieces later, they can be marked. Also, to simplify the process, nails are pre-set. Some people prefer to drill a hole for them, but most often installation does not require this.

    Glass installation

    Now you can install the glass. Before installing it in the frame, a quarter around the perimeter is coated with putty - special window putty or simply acrylic-based sealant. After applying it, glass is inserted into the quarter. It is very important to press down a little so that the putty comes out a little. If there is too little, you can add it on top, coating the perimeter again. After this, the glazing beads are nailed - they should be pressed tightly against the glass. To avoid damaging it during installation, it is recommended to wrap the hammer with a couple of layers of electrical tape.

    As you can see, replacing glass in a wooden window is far from the most complicated process. However, all of the above applies only to single glass. Installing wooden frames and double-glazed windows is a completely different matter. Here, most likely, you cannot do without a specialist.

    How to insert glass into a window

    The need to replace glass in a window does not appear very often. This can be caused by several reasons, such as glass rattling in an old window frame or a crack appearing. The most radical and most common cause of repair is, of course, broken glass.
    There is an established opinion that glass replacement is only possible for a wooden window, and when using plastic windows, the entire sash will need to be replaced. This is not a completely correct point of view, disseminated, among other things, by the manufacturers of these products and companies providing glazing services.

    The fact is that replacing glass, which is an integral part of the glass unit of a plastic window, is indeed quite difficult, since air almost inevitably gets into the chamber, which usually ends with the constant formation of condensation. However, it is quite possible to replace the double-glazed window itself, and actually do this work with your own hands, without the involvement of expensive specialists. The same applies to replacing glass in a wooden window - the main reason for doing the work yourself is the desire to save money.

    When carrying out glass replacement work, you must be extremely careful and follow safety precautions, since any carelessness can lead to unpleasant and dangerous cuts. In addition, glass is a fragile material, so you need to be careful not to break it while working.

    Hands should be protected with thick cloth or leather gloves, and cardboard sheets or wrapping paper should be placed on the floor and windowsill. They will protect the material used to finish these surfaces from scratches and possible splinters.

    How to insert glass into a wooden frame

    To perform work on replacing glass in a wooden frame of a window or door, you should prepare the necessary tools and materials:

    • sheet of window glass. Its thickness is usually 3-4 mm, its length and width are sufficient for glazing;
    • glass cutter;
    • small hammer;
    • transparent sealant (usually silicone) and a gun for applying it;
    • chisel, knife, spatula or similar tool;
    • hacksaw;
    • nails 15 mm long;
    • tape or self-adhesive tape;
    • ruler or tape measure;
    • rag or rags.

    Do not forget about the gloves already mentioned above to protect your hands and cardboard or wrapping paper, which is spread on the floor and windowsill.

    Removing old glass

    Work on replacing glass begins with removing the old glass that has become unusable. If the glass is broken, you must first remove all the fragments and secure the remaining pieces in the frame with tape.

    Rice. 2. Removing broken glass.

    Then the glazing beads and nails with which they are usually fastened are dismantled. Glazing beads can often be reused, so it is advisable to remove them carefully, taking care not to damage the material. After this, you need to remove the putty with a knife, if it has been used.

    To complete the process, carefully remove the remaining loose and loose glass from the frame using protective gloves.

    Glass measurement

    The next stage of glass replacement work begins with cleaning the folds of the wooden frame from residual putty, burrs, and nails using a chisel or file.

    Then you need to measure the height and width of the window frame from one rebate to the other. From the obtained values, subtract 3 mm, which are necessary so that the glass can expand freely when heated. This is the size of the glass that will need to be prepared for its subsequent installation.

    Glass can be ordered according to the dimensions obtained in a special workshop, but you can also prepare it yourself.

    The best way to cut glass

    In order to cut glass, a glass cutter is used, which makes a scratch on the glass along which a break is made. There are three types of glass cutters:

    • roller. The simplest, inexpensive and therefore popular. It leaves a groove on the surface with a roller made of hard alloy;
    • diamond. Used by professionals, the scratch is made with a diamond located on the top of the tool;
    • oil. Also intended for specialists, used for large volumes of glass cutting. The process is facilitated by the use of oil, which reduces the friction force when moving the glass cutter along the surface of the material.

    In everyday practice, a regular roller glass cutter is most often used, since it is the easiest to use, while being the most budget option.

    Glass cutting

    Before you begin cutting glass to the required sizes, its surface must be cleaned of dust, gnawing and wiped dry. The cut is made along a ruler or a flat block using light pressure from the glass cutter.

    The cut is made in one motion. Under no circumstances should the tool be repeated over a groove that has already been made.

    Rice. 4. Glass cutting.

    Then the glass is placed on the edge of a wide, flat surface and broken along the line of the scratch. In order to break off a narrow strip, for safety reasons, it is recommended to hold it with special slots that are located on the head of the glass cutter, or with tongs.

    If it is necessary to obtain a circle or glass in the shape of an arch, a template is first made and a cut is made along it. Further operations are performed in the same order as described above. If necessary, the corners of the glass can be sanded before installation in the frame.

    Glass replacement

    When installing glass, the most important point is to prevent the formation of voids and gaps between it and the window frame. To do this, the glass is laid on a pre-applied layer of silicone sealant or special putty for windows. These compounds will allow the glass to expand slightly when heated, while simultaneously ensuring a tight seal.

    Rice. 5. Installation of glass.

    The glass is secured with glazing beads, which, in addition to nails (nailed at a distance of approximately 10-15 cm), are coated with sealant or window putty. Upon completion of the work, the glazing beads are usually painted.

    Rice. 6. Applying sealant.

    Secrets of window layout

    Replacing glass in a wooden frame is not difficult and does not contain any special secrets. The most important points of the technological process are the following:

    • making correct and accurate measurements of the length and width of the glass required for installation;
    • performing work in compliance with safety regulations;
    • ensuring correct marking of glass when cutting it;
    • careful and careful handling of fragile and dangerous materials.

    If you follow and carefully follow the recommendations described above, replacing glass in a wooden frame is not particularly difficult.

    How to insert glass into a plastic window frame

    As mentioned above, in a plastic window it is more advisable to replace the double-glazed window rather than the individual glass. This kind of work is somewhat more complicated than for a wooden frame, however, it can be done independently.

    At the first stage, it is necessary to dismantle the double-glazed window. To do this, you need to carefully insert the knife under the bead and try to move it slightly. A plastic gasket is placed in the resulting gap, which slowly loosens until it makes a characteristic click. After this, the bead can be easily removed.

    Rice. 7. Dismantling the bead.

    The sequence of dismantling the glazing beads is as follows - first the side ones, then the bottom one, and lastly the top one, in order to avoid the glass unit from falling. It is necessary to note the location of the spacers and which bead is attached where.

    Glass measurement

    There are two options for measuring glass units:

    • The visible part of the glass unit is measured before dismantling the glazing beads. Add 2 cm to the obtained values - this will be the length and width of the required glass unit;
    • The distance between the outer edges of the beads is measured. Then 1 cm is subtracted from the obtained values - this is the length and width the new double-glazed window should have.

    Despite the seemingly complex description of the process, the measurement procedure itself is not difficult. To get the desired result, just carefully follow the instructions described above.

    Rice. 8. Glass unit measurement.

    Ordering double glazed windows

    The obtained dimensions, as well as information about whether a two- or three-chamber double-glazed window was used in a plastic window, must be transferred to the manufacturer or supplier of plastic windows.

    If the window was installed relatively recently, it is advisable to find out the reason why the glass became unusable. If the fault of the manufacturer or the company that installed the window is established, and the warranty period has not yet expired, it is quite possible to receive a double-glazed window and even carry out the installation work at the expense of the guilty party.

    Otherwise, further work is carried out independently.

    Replacement of glass unit

    After receiving the required glass unit, it should be installed. The operations are performed in the reverse order to the one in which the old one was dismantled. The weight of the glass unit is quite large, so it is advisable to use the help of a partner.

    Rice. 9. Installation of double-glazed windows.

    The glass unit is inserted into the frame with the same arrangement of spacers as before. Then it is leveled so that the same gap remains on all sides.

    The beads are installed in the following order: first the side ones, then the bottom one, and finally the top one. During installation, a characteristic click should be heard, indicating that the bead is in its intended place. There is no need for additional sealing of joints when performing this work.

To replace damaged glass in a wooden window frame, you can do without the help of specialists, but do it yourself and with your own hands. If the upper part of the window frame is located quite inconveniently and far away, it will be more convenient for you to work by removing it and laying it on a flat surface. When working with glass, follow safety rules. Try not to place it on the floor surface, as you may crush it without noticing. Place the glass against the wall and cover it with something bright.

    In order to replace glass in a wooden frame window, you should stock up on:

    directly with the glass itself, a tape measure, a chisel, silicone sealant, glazing beads, a hacksaw, pliers, a sharp knife.

    And so let's move on to work on how to insert glass into a window with a wooden frame.

    • Before starting work on inserting glass into a window, you should put on gloves made of thick fabric to protect yourself from possible injuries and cuts.
    • First, cover the entire surface of the glass with a thick layer of tape. You can also use electrical tape or masking tape. Then cover the window sill with newspaper sheets or any paper so as not to damage the paint layer.
    • Next, you need to get rid of the fasteners between the glass and the frame, be it beading or putty. If it is putty, then it should be cleaned off with a screwdriver or the edge of a knife. In order to get rid of dried or hardened putty, you need to gently tap the handle of the knife with some object. You can also use a hair dryer, which will soften it with a stream of hot air, or a soldering iron. Remove nails or other fasteners using pliers. Using a screwdriver or chisel, remove the studs.
    • After all the work described above, we remove the damaged glass from the frame. If necessary, wrap all the fragments on pre-laid paper, carefully pack them, and throw them away.
    • All folds in a wooden frame should be cleaned to obtain smooth surfaces, and for this you need to use a file, chisel and pliers. It is worth getting rid of all kinds of irregularities, bumps, nails and nicks on the wood.
    • Next, measure the glass. Measure the distance according to the dimensions of the stripped folds, calculating 0.3 cm on each side. This is done in order to protect the glass from cracks when expanding. Cut the window glass to a delicate size, or contact a workshop. Calculate the number of glazing beads using measurements.
    • Glazing beads and silicone sealant in white or transparent color can be purchased at a specialized building materials store. If you did not damage the old bead when removing it from the frame, you can use it again. When purchasing sealant, take the time to read the description on the package. Buy one that is not afraid of temperature changes. In order to apply the sealant, you will need to use a construction gun. You can use sealant sold in syringes, but it will be a little more expensive.
    • Using a hacksaw with medium-sized teeth, you need to cut out the glazing beads of the required size, and then hammer the nails intended for window work into it so that they are perpendicular.
    • Carefully lubricate all folds with silicone sealant. Place a wooden stick on the bottom part of the window frame to leave a gap, and then install the glass. While gently pressing the glass, remove the wooden stick.
    • After this, you should carefully nail the glazing bead. Before it is installed in the frame, it is worth covering it with paint, although this can be done after installation. If necessary, it is worth painting parts of the frame that were damaged during work.

    Here are some brief instructions on how you can insert glass into a window with a wooden or plastic frame with your own hands, and you don’t need to call the craftsmen and pay them money.

    How to insert glass using a bead

    Broken glass in a wooden frame is very easy to replace yourself. There are two methods of fastening - using putty and using a glazing bead. Here we will talk about the second one.

    Tools and materials:

    2. Wooden glazing beads

    3. Nails, a hammer and a small piece of cardboard
