Good afternoon. I have 2 questions (similar). 1) Is it possible to mention suicides in morning prayer at home? 2) Is it possible to mention in morning prayer at home those who may not have been baptized (no one knows if he was baptized, but they say he always loved to draw crosses and loved God, I didn’t know him, he died more than 20 years ago, when he was young, his wife took it upon herself to perform the funeral service for him)?

Stanislav

Hello, Stanislav. At home, you can remember anyone and any way you want, but we must not forget the Apostle’s warning - everything is permissible, but not everything is beneficial. Pray for those you personally know or have known. Mainly for those who asked you about it, or you suggested it, and he agreed. Respect individual freedom.

Priest Alexander Beloslyudov

Hello. How to pray for deceased unbaptized relatives? I know my grandparents by name and patronymic, from here I know the names of my great-grandfathers, but then I don’t know anyone else. They were peasants, Mari, pagans. Can I just remember them by name in the morning or evening? Close girlfriend wants to do yoga and not only physical exercises, but also spiritual ones, she says that it helps her and improves her health. She is baptized, but unchurched, how should we feel about this?

Nika

For unbaptized people, alas, we can only pray at home, during home prayer. You can read the prayer of St. Leo of Optina: As for practicing yoga with spiritual practices, this is outright Satanism, one should have an extremely negative attitude towards this, perhaps even, it is better not to communicate with people who practice this at all - communication is most likely will be meaningless.

Hegumen Nikon (Golovko)

Hello! Can I order services in churches and monasteries for deceased unbaptized relatives, in particular the canon of St. Martyr Uar? Some monasteries and churches (at Orthodox fairs) accept such demands and say that they are blessed. Thanks in advance for your answer!

Ilya

Ilya, lately there has been an unhealthy stir around prayers to the martyr Uar; they are credited with almost mystical, mysterious powers, but the official church position is that unbaptized people cannot be commemorated in church during public prayer. However, they can be remembered in private prayer - both at home and in church. His Holiness Patriarch Alexy II said that recently an anti-church practice of commemorating unbaptized people during divine services has developed: “Some rectors, guided by mercantile considerations, perform church commemoration of unbaptized people, accepting a lot of notes and donations for such a commemoration and assuring people that commemoration is equivalent to the Sacrament of Holy Baptism. People with little church life get the impression that it is not necessary to accept Holy Baptism or be a member of the Church, it is enough just to pray to the martyr Uar. Such an attitude towards the veneration of the holy martyr Huar is unacceptable and contradicts our church teaching" (Report at the diocesan meeting of Moscow 2003)

Hello. Thank you for helping me understand a lot. I have a few questions. 1. My godmother died. I don’t know whether they held a funeral service for her or not, since she lived in another city. How to remember her correctly? There is no one to ask, since there are no contacts for relatives. Is it possible to write her name in the requests? 2. How to remember people correctly if they are not baptized and not inveterate, or you knew this person in life, but do not know such details. 3. Long-dead relatives, grandfather, great-grandfather, mother-in-law’s mother, her father - I also don’t know if they had a funeral service. The mother-in-law has already buried herself (it seems that she has kept everything according to Orthodox rules). She also buried her husband, but at the time of his life he did not know whether the necessary sacrament had been performed. God bless you.

r.b. Tatiana

Hello Tatiana. The funeral service is not a sacrament. It is not a mystical means of transporting the soul of the deceased to the “other world.” In the missal this rite is called: “Sequence of burial of worldly people.” From the name it is clear that we're talking about about a series of prayers, arranged in a special order, to accompany the burial rite. At any other time, other services are performed for the soul of the deceased: memorial service, funeral lithium, parastas, litanies at the Liturgy and during Proskomedia. It is not customary to submit name church commemorations for the unbaptized and heterodox. Church prayer is performed for the entire human race, but petitions by name are offered only for members of the Church. Therefore, for those whose membership in the Orthodox Church you do not doubt, you can submit any commemoration without thinking about whether they were “correctly inveterate.” Pray for everyone else yourself, remembering them by name in your morning prayers.

Priest Alexander Beloslyudov

Good afternoon, father! My child died during childbirth (the umbilical cord was entangled) due to asphyxia. Many years have passed, and just recently I heard that a mother who has buried her child cannot eat apples until she is saved. Is it true? And another question: do I need to order a service for my child? How should you remember a child? Thank you.

Marina

No, Marina, about apples - complete nonsense, don’t take it into account at all! What a pity that our people so tenaciously hold on to all sorts of stupid fantasies and ridiculous ideas. All this comes only from extreme lack of education. Since your child has not yet been baptized, you can remember his soul at home prayer. But don’t be too discouraged, the Lord, of course, accepted his soul in the heavenly abodes, he feels very good now, because he was sinless!

Hegumen Nikon (Golovko)

Hello, father, is it possible to remember unbaptized relatives along with Orthodox relatives in home prayer for the living and the dead, or is it necessary to somehow mention them separately? Save me, God!

Svetlana

It’s possible, Svetlana. It is possible to remember the unbaptized at home prayer, and, I think, it is not necessary to highlight their names in some special list at the end of the commemoration. You can do this simply for the sake of convenience.

Hegumen Nikon (Golovko)

Hello, father. My niece died, she was 40 years old, but she was not baptized. Before his death, they invited the priest, he read prayers, said, let's wait another half hour, he told the mother to read the Mother of God, while the mother was reading, the niece stopped breathing. This means that she remained unbaptized, how can we remember her now?

Valentina

Valentina, you can remember your niece at home prayer, give alms in memory of her soul and do other good deeds.

Hegumen Nikon (Golovko)

His wife's brother died (tragically), before which he decided to accept holy baptism, but did not have time. They say that you can have a funeral service for the unbaptized and subsequently commemorate them in church for their repose. How to do it?

Eugene

Dear Evgeniy, you were incorrectly informed. There is a special rite of prayerful consolation for relatives of suicides (http://www.patriarchia.ru/db/text/1586949.html). But about the suicides themselves, as well as about people who died unbaptized, the Church does not offer conciliar prayers. You yourself can pray at home for the repose of an unbaptized relative with the prayer of St. Leo of Optina: Seek, O Lord, the lost soul of Thy servant (name): if it is possible, have mercy. Your destinies are unsearchable. Do not make this my prayer a sin, but Thy holy will be done.

Archpriest Andrey Efanov

Hello, father. Tragically died in 2005 cousin Born 1946 Whether she was baptized is unknown. I sent a request to Pinsk, where she was born. The answer came that they did not have such information. Lately I've been dreaming about her and saying that she's not where everyone else is. I took this to mean that she was not inveterate. I pray for her soul in private prayer. Is it possible to order a funeral service for R. in our church? b. Lydia, to remember her in the temple?

Valentina

Valentina, this is the question that needs to be asked in your church. We cannot decide in absentia and remotely what is allowed and what is not allowed in your church, there is a rector there, and these are his responsibilities. Talk to the priest from your temple at this issue and please follow his advice.

Hegumen Nikon (Golovko)

Hello! Please tell me, is it possible to write a note about the repose of an unbaptized baby? He died at 9 months, they did not have time to baptize him. Thank you in advance.

Julia

Yulia, no, unfortunately, you can’t write a note, but you can commemorate it at cell (personal, home) prayer. Just don’t be overly upset, don’t be killed and don’t complain: the Lord is merciful, and what he does, he does only by desiring good for every soul. So the soul of this baby is in places where it does not experience any sorrow, since he is sinless. And what in our concepts seems terrible to us, such as death, in the eyes of God is simply a transition from one state of life to another. Human life is eternal, and the Lord builds it precisely from these positions.

Hegumen Nikon (Golovko)

Good day! Father, please tell me, can I remember in my home prayer a deceased relative who was not baptized?

Ksenia

Yes, Ksenia, you can. You can also do good deeds in his memory: give alms, for example, money, clothes, food. In general, there are countless such good deeds; think about what you can do, and do it as an active addition to prayer.

Hegumen Nikon (Golovko)

Hello, father. I often read the Psalter at home, and after the first glory I pray for the health of my loved ones. Tell me, please, is it possible to mention unbaptized people here? And how do you generally pray for the unbaptized so that the Lord will lead them to Orthodox faith? Thank you for your efforts.

Natalia

Natalya, of course, it is possible and necessary to pray for the unbaptized, but only wisely: the fact is that for praying for them, sometimes the enemy begins to attack us and we may not be ready for such temptations. Let us therefore adhere to this rule: if we pray for the unbaptized, then for those closest or dearest to us. And the Psalter is the most suitable book for such prayer.

Hegumen Nikon (Golovko)

Hello! Please tell me, is it possible to pray for those who have not yet accepted faith? And are there any prayers for the enlightenment of lost souls? How can we help a person make the right spiritual choice?

Olga

Hello Olga! The Church prays only for its children - that is, people who have been baptized. But you can remember the unbaptized in home prayer. You can pray for the lost, for example, to the Most Holy Theotokos in front of her icon “The Sign” Korchemnaya. They pray to her for guidance in the Orthodox faith, for deliverance from heresy and schisms, from drunkenness, for the admonition of those who have fallen away from the Orthodox faith and for the return of those who have gone astray to the Church: “O Most Holy Lady Theotokos, Mother of the Heavenly King, God’s chosen Youth! Uncertain hope, healing for the sick, to the dear intercessor, to the grieving, consolation and joy, to the offended patroness and to all in troubles and misfortunes, quick help and intercession! let us fall into despair, for You are the One, more than all the saints and more than all the heavenly minds, our Representative to God, as the All-Blessed King, the Good Mother. Likewise, we, sinners, look at Your Most Pure Image “The Sign”, bow our knees with tenderness and, reverently kissing, We pray to Thee, Blessed Mother: do not reject our humble prayer and show us a sign of Thy mercy: no one, running to You with hope, comes from You to shame, but asks for grace and accepts the gift of useful petition, glorifying Your Son and God, and You with Him forever and ever. Amen".
A priest can help you in spiritual matters in church, at confession or in a private conversation.

Priest Vladimir Shlykov

Baptism provides a “connection” (albeit a reduced one, in comparison with the so-called “grace” of a priest, and with little authority) to access the energy of the Christian egregor, therefore the prayer of a person who has undergone the ritual (in Christian terminology, a sacrament) of baptism is much more effective.
But, nevertheless, an unbaptized person can pray. If you have strong energy and a correctly formed thought form of intention, you will get the result. But in general, it is better to use the services of a specially trained magician-operator in this tradition (called a “priest” in Christian terminology) - for example, order magpies in several churches, for the task that you need. The work will be of higher quality, the result will be “cleaner” and faster.

God has nothing to do with church rituals and actions.

P.S. I don’t want to offend the canonical followers of Christian denominations. Personal...

Question:

Please tell me how the Church feels about the fact that an unbaptized person is present at the service and makes the sign of himself sign of the cross? What should I do if I know that such a person is standing next to me?

Hieromonk Job (Gumerov) answers:

We must rejoice and thank God that He brought him to the temple. Such people in ancient Church were called catechumens. The catechumens were divided into three degrees. The first degree was made up of those who listened, that is, those who declared their desire to join the Church and received the right to enter the temple to listen to the Holy Spirit. Scriptures and teachings. Catechumens of the second degree, falling or kneeling, had the right to be present in the temple during the entire liturgy of the catechumens. The third degree of catechumens were those who demanded, that is, those who were ready to receive the sacrament of baptism. They were told the most important part Christian teaching- about the Most Holy Trinity, about the Church, etc. Before Holy Easter, those who wished to be baptized entered their names on the list of those being baptized,...

I don’t believe that in a Latin church, if, when ordering a funeral mass, you say that the deceased has not been baptized, they will celebrate the mass. And if a person conceals this fact, he will commit a sin.

I assume that they may not interrogate (in Orthodox churches Also, not everyone is questioned whether he was baptized or not, in our church all the notes are put in a common box, behind which there is no one and there is no one to interrogate, so theoretically you can submit anyone in the same way), but it is assumed that the person himself knows .

I have a sample of many cities in Russia and nowhere do Fathers allow prayer within the walls of a church for the unbaptized, O Catholics
x, etc., and it doesn’t matter whether they died or not. Moreover, those who pray sin. This is what the priests of the Russian Orthodox Church say.

Please list all the churches in which you asked the abbots about this and they answered you what you say here?

Question regarding point 1: that is, if a person, out of ignorance (or intentionally), submits a note about an unbaptized person to a liturgy or prayer service, then the priest will still read it, but it will have no power. So?
It follows that God will deliberately remain deaf to the mention of the name of his creation during the liturgy. So?

No. A rough example. Only those who are connected to it can access the Internet. The rest, whether they open IE 10 or 50 times, still won’t be able to access the Internet. And the reason is not that the provider is evil. On the contrary, he (the provider) is happy for everyone.

...So why then, say, in Christian temple Can't you pray for the health of a Muslim?

Can you please pray...

8. about the works of God:

The tradition of the Church brings to us a lot of evidence about the effectiveness of prayer for unbaptized people who do not belong to the Church.

One day Rev. Macarius of Egypt walked through the desert and saw a human skull lying on the ground. When the monk touched him with a palm stick, the skull spoke. The elder asked: “Who are you?” The skull replied: “I was a pagan priest of the idolaters who lived in this place.” He also said that when St. Macarius, having mercy on those who are in eternal torment, prays for them, then they receive some consolation. “As far as the sky is from the earth, there is as much fire under our feet and above our heads,” the skull said again, “We stand in the middle of the fire, and none of us is positioned so as to see our neighbor. But when you pray for us, each one sees the other’s face somewhat. This is our joy." After the conversation, the elder buried the skull in the ground.

For people who died without holy baptism or belonged to another denomination or faith, we cannot pray on Divine Liturgy and perform funeral services for them in the Church, but no one forbids us to pray for them in our personal home prayers. Those. During the Liturgy, you cannot pray at all for the unbaptized, neither out loud, nor even silently, because at this time the bloodless Eucharistic Sacrifice is offered, and it is offered only for members of the Church. Such remembrance is allowed only during a memorial service, silently, and never at the Liturgy.

The Venerable Leo of Optina, consoling his spiritual son Pavel Tambovtsev, whose father tragically died outside the Church, said: “ You shouldn't be overly sad. God, without comparison, loved and loves him more than you. This means that you can only leave the eternal fate of your parent to the goodness and mercy of God, Who, if He deigns to have mercy, then who can resist Him?" The Great Elder gave Pavel Tambovtsev a prayer, which, with some modifications, can be said for the unbaptized:

“Have mercy, O Lord, on the soul of Your servant (name), who passed into eternal life without Holy Baptism. Your destinies are unsearchable. Do not make this my prayer a sin for me. But Thy holy will be done."

This prayer can be used when reading the Psalter for the departed, reading it at every “Glory”.

Sedlec Ossuary in Kutna Hora (Czech Republic)

Another holy Optina elder, St. Joseph, later said that there is evidence of the fruits of this prayer. It can be read at any time (repeatedly throughout the day). You can also do it mentally in the temple. Alms given to those in need for the deceased help. It is good to pray to the Mother of God, reading the rosary “Virgin Mother of God, rejoice...” (as much as your strength allows: from 30 to 150 times a day). At the beginning and at the end of this rule, one must ask the Mother of God to help the soul of the deceased.

The Orthodox Church testifies that there is a Christian saint who has the special grace to pray for those who have died unbaptized. This is a victim in the 3rd century. St. Martyr Uar. There is a canon for this saint, in which the main content is a request to St. martyr to pray for the unbaptized. This canon and the prayer of St. Martyr Uar is read instead of those funeral prayers that the Church offers for the baptized.

The relatives of the deceased (especially children and grandchildren - direct descendants) have great opportunity influence the afterlife fate of the deceased. Namely: to show the fruits of spiritual life (to live in the prayer experience of the Church, to participate in the Holy Sacraments, to live according to the commandments of Christ). Although the one who departed unbaptized did not himself show these fruits, but his children and grandchildren, he, too, is involved in them as a root or trunk.

And I would also like to say: loved ones should not lose heart, but do everything possible to help, remembering the mercy of the Lord and knowing that everything will be finally determined at the Judgment of God.

Complete collection and description: prayer for the unbaptized deceased for the spiritual life of a believer.

The Orthodox Church calls all Christian believers to constant prayer. Of course, most often we pray for people close to us, relatives, friends. But there are situations when a person in need of prayer help has not been baptized in Orthodox Church. What then should be the prayer for the unbaptized living and deceased?

The importance of the Sacrament of Baptism for a person

Baptism is one of the seven Sacraments of the church, and without exaggeration it can be called fundamental. The spiritual life of an Orthodox Christian is impossible unless he sooner or later receives church baptism. Why is it so important for a person and what does it give?

First of all, baptism makes a person a full member of the Church of Christ. By accepting the Sacrament, a person confesses faith in the crucified Jesus Christ and shows his intention to follow Him in life. In addition, in this Sacrament the seal of a person is washed away original sin which is inherent in each of us.

The rite of baptism with water itself dates back to Gospel times. Yes, Forerunner Lord John baptized the people in the Jordan River. It was there that Our Lord Jesus Christ Himself received the Sacrament during His earthly life.

Thus, we can say that by accepting this Sacrament, a person becomes open to God's grace and can boldly follow Christ in the fullness of church life.

Features of prayer for unbaptized living people

If a person for some reason does not accept the Sacrament of Baptism, he cannot be a full member of the church. This is expressed, first of all, in the opportunity to participate in the Divine Liturgy.

Interesting! Some time ago, unbaptized people could not enter the temple beyond the vestibule, and also had to leave the Divine service in a certain part of it.

Today, such a strict restriction has been lifted, but still an unbaptized person cannot participate in worship as an equal.

The main feature of prayer for unbaptized people is that they cannot be remembered at the Divine Liturgy.

The priest at the altar offers a bloodless sacrifice, symbolically representing the sacrifice of Jesus Christ. At this time, pieces are taken from the prosphoras for each name submitted for commemoration. These particles are then sent to the Chalice and become a great shrine - the Body of Christ.

If a person deliberately avoids baptism, then Christ’s sacrifice for him becomes meaningless. That is why, in order to participate in the Sacrament of Communion, and indeed in the fullness of the Liturgy, it is necessary to be baptized in church.

But what should we do if a person close to us, whose fate is not indifferent, turns out to be unbaptized? He cannot be commemorated in church, but there are no obstacles to purely personal prayer. At home, in front of the home iconostasis, we can pray for all the people close to us, even if they have not been baptized.

Prayer for unbaptized babies

Prayer for children who have just recently been born and have not yet had time to be baptized also has its own characteristics. There is a tradition of baptizing children after the 40th day of birth, but in fact, the baby can be baptized as soon as it is born. So, if the mother had a difficult birth and the child is in danger, it is very advisable to baptize the baby as soon as possible. In many maternity hospitals and children's hospitals you can freely invite a priest, and in some places there are even functioning churches on the territory of the medical institution.

If the family decides to baptize the baby later, then all the time before the Sacrament is performed, they pray for the child in close connection with the mother. It is believed that at this time the mother and baby share one Guardian Angel, and only after Baptism does the child have his own.

You can pray for such children in church, but only the note indicates not the individual name of the baby, but the name of the mother with the note “with the child.” For example, if the mother’s name is Maria, then the note should be submitted as follows: “On the health of God’s servant Mary and her child.” After Baptism, you can write in a note the name of the child himself with the postscript “baby”.

O Most Holy Lady Virgin Theotokos, save and preserve under Your shelter my children (names), all youths, young women and infants, baptized and nameless and carried in their mother’s womb. Cover them with the robe of Your motherhood, keep them in the fear of God and in obedience to their parents, pray to my Lord and Your Son to grant them what is useful for their salvation. I entrust them to Your maternal supervision, for You are the Divine Protection of Your servants.

Mother of God, introduce me to the image of Your heavenly motherhood. Heal the mental and physical wounds of my children (names) caused by my sins. I entrust my child entirely to my Lord Jesus Christ and Your, Most Pure, heavenly protection. Amen.

Prayer for the unbaptized dead

Anyone Orthodox Christian It’s hard to realize that someone close to you died without becoming a full member of the Church of Christ. There is no point in becoming despondent; God’s Providence exists for such people as well. But sincere heartfelt prayer will help the soul of a deceased person, even if he did not have time to deeply know God.

Have mercy, O Lord, on the soul of Your servant (name), who passed into eternal life without Holy Baptism. Your destinies are unsearchable. Do not make this my prayer a sin for me. But Thy holy will be done.

Important! As is the case with people still living, it is impossible to submit notes with the names of unbaptized people in the church for commemoration.

The reason is the same - a person during his life, for one reason or another, did not have time to enter the Church of God. It is all the more important for such a soul that there is a person who remembers the deceased in his personal prayer at home. After all, the whole Church prays for baptized people at every liturgy, but only those who take on this burden in personal work pray for the unbaptized.

What kind of prayers to read for the unbaptized dead

IN Orthodox worship There is a special service - a requiem - during which all Orthodox Christians who have died from time to time are remembered. You can only submit notes about those who have managed to come to God and His Holy Church in their lives. However, this does not mean that everyone else should be left without prayerful remembrance.

Most often, they pray to the martyr Uar for the repose of the souls of unbaptized people. There is a specially compiled canon for this saint, who lived in the 3rd century and spent his entire life begging for those unfortunates who remained outside the protection of the Church of Christ. To this day, a sincere appeal to this ascetic brings great relief to souls after death.

Through the army of the saints, the passion-bearer who suffered legally, in vain, you showed your strength courageously. And having rushed to the passion of your will, and to die lustfully for Christ, who have accepted the honor of the victory of your suffering, Ouare, pray for our souls to be saved.

Having followed Christ, the martyr Uare, having drunk His cup, and having been bound with the crown of torment, and rejoicing with the Angels, pray unceasingly for our souls

Oh, venerable holy martyr Uare, kindled with zeal for the Lord Christ, you confessed the Heavenly King before the tormentor, and you suffered earnestly for Him, and now you stand before Him with the angels, and rejoice in the highest, and see clearly the Holy Trinity, and enjoy the light of the Beginning Radiance , remember also our relatives in languor, who died in wickedness, accept our petition, and just as Cleopatrine freed the unfaithful family from eternal torment with your prayers, so remember the people who were buried against God, who died unbaptized, trying to ask for deliverance from eternal darkness, so that all with one mouth and With one heart let us praise the Most Merciful Creator forever and ever. Amen.

Separately, for stillborn or unbaptized babies, you can pray with the prayer of Metropolitan Grigoir of Novgorod or Hieromonk Arseny of Athos. If such a misfortune occurs in a family, and a child dies before receiving the Sacrament of Baptism, then special prayer support is needed both for his soul and for his parents and family. In prayer and hope Divine Providence about each person it will be easier to cope with loss and grief.

Remember, O Lord who loves mankind, the souls of the departed servants of Your babies, who in the womb of Orthodox mothers died accidentally from unknown actions or from a difficult birth, or from some carelessness, and therefore did not receive the holy sacrament of Baptism! Baptize them, O Lord, in the sea of Your bounties and save them with Your ineffable goodness.

It should be remembered that prayer is always work. And personal prayer without the support of the church is special work. Therefore, if we undertake to beg unbaptized people close to us, we must be prepared for various temptations and obstacles along the way. And only with God’s help and humility can this path be overcome.

Prayers for the unbaptized living and dead

Today, there are many different debates about whether it is possible to pray for the health of an unbaptized person. Some argue in this regard that it is absolutely impossible to ask the Lord for such people. This is justified by the fact that a person who has not been baptized puts his person against church canons, rejecting the shrine of God's Temple.

Others say that you can ask God even for lost sheep, so he will definitely hear your prayer for unbaptized people.

Judging by the numerous discussions of clergy on this topic, we can safely draw a conclusion. To the question, is it possible to read a prayer for unbaptized children or adults? You can answer this way: of course it is possible, why not?

Church sources even contain real prayers for unbaptized people. In such prayers, people turn to God for the forgiveness of sinners and the opportunity to return them to the bosom of the divine temple.

For the deceased unbaptized - prayers to the martyr Uar

If you want to reach out to the Lord and ask for protection for a person who has not undergone the Sacrament of baptism, then it is better to turn to the patrons of the lost. One of such patrons is considered to be the holy righteous man Uar. During his lifetime, this Saint prayed for the repose of the unbaptized for the protection of the Lord.

Saint Huar is addressed to:

  • for the living lost people;
  • for children who have not been baptized;
  • for unborn babies;
  • for an unbaptized deceased baby who did not have time to receive the Sacrament;
  • for dead lost people.

Words of prayer to this Holy Martyr:

“Oh, the venerable holy martyr Uare, we kindle with zeal for the Lord Christ, you confessed the Heavenly King before the tormentor, and now the Church honors you, as glorified by the Lord Christ with the glory of Heaven, Who has given you the grace of great boldness towards Him, and now you stand before Him with the Angels , and in the highest you rejoice, and clearly see the Holy Trinity, and enjoy the light of the Beginning Radiance: remember also our relatives in languor, who died in wickedness, accept our petition, and like Cleopatrine, you freed the unfaithful generation with your prayers from eternal torment, so remember the people buried against God , who died unbaptized (names), trying to ask for deliverance from eternal darkness, so that with one mouth and one heart we may all praise the Most Merciful Creator forever and ever. Amen".

Prayers for unbaptized dead people

The Church has an ambiguous attitude towards lost souls. But there, nevertheless, there is a real prayer to the Lord for such people. And many clergy even declare that every person has the right to ask for God’s protection.

However, we must remember that the church prohibits ordering liturgies and funeral services for lost souls. You can only read a private prayer for the deceased. At the same time, being outside the influence of the church.

Praying for dead soul, You are not only supporting the deceased, but also yourself. After all, as you know, prayer allows you to pray for sadness, grief for a worthy person who was an important part of your life.

Prayer for the unbaptized departed to the Lord

Many people often wonder: “who can pray for the souls of dead people who did not accept Orthodox baptism? The clergy say that you can pray not only to God, but also to the Saints. Remember that sincere prayers from pure heart will definitely reach the addressee. Every person on the planet has the right to the protection of the Almighty and his forgiveness.

Even people without faith or those who have converted to another religion can pray for people who have not been baptized. In addition, in the Orthodox Church to this day there is no specific opinion on whether baptized Catholics should be considered Christians or not.

You can ask the Almighty in these words:

“Seek, O Lord, the lost soul of my father: if it is possible, have mercy! Your destinies are unsearchable. I did not make this prayer a sin for me. But Thy holy will be done"

May the Lord protect you!

Prayer for the unbaptized dead

It is a great tragedy if a person dies without being baptized. This can't be fixed. And by church laws it is impossible to perform a funeral service for him in church or commemorate him at the Liturgy. But loved ones always have the right to personal prayer for the unbaptized dead. What's the best way to do this?

What happens after death

If a person completely rejected the Lord during his lifetime, there is no need to pray for him too hard. There were cases when the dead appeared and asked not to pray for them. In any case, talk to the priest, he will advise what to do in specific situation. But it happens that people respect the faith, show a desire to be baptized, but simply do not have time to do it. Then you can and should pray.

Each soul after death goes to a private trial, which will take place on the 40th day after death. It is believed that prayers for the unbaptized dead help the soul of the deceased go through aerial ordeals and ways to even alleviate his fate. On the very day of death you can:

  • read 17 kathisma - psalms and necessary prayers for repose;
  • perform the secular rite of lithium at the cemetery;
  • light a candle in the temple and pray.

It is not possible to order a memorial service or church memorial. This is done because during his lifetime the person himself did not express a desire to belong to the Church and rejected God.

What other prayers can you read?

There is veneration of the martyr Huar, who supposedly had the grace to pray for the unbaptized. There was even a service compiled for him, only it is non-canonical, that is, it is not officially recognized by the church. Church prayer for the unbaptized dead, although now permitted by some priests (for a fee), violates all canons. Whether or not to read the canon for the dead to the martyr Uar is a personal matter for everyone.

The Holy Fathers also advise giving alms for those who died without repentance, without accepting Christ.

If a baby dies

Great grief - loss small child. But the Holy Church believes that all babies end up in heaven. This is written about in the Gospel. Prayer for unbaptized infants is also performed privately, as for other people who have not become members of the Church. Children, although they do not have conscious bad deeds, still bear the stamp of the original sin of Adam and Eve. This is why the Church considers it necessary to baptize young children.

It may seem unfair that the child did not know life. But we don’t know what his fate would have been like. It is believed that the Lord takes people to Himself in order to protect a person from a more terrible disaster; this also applies to children. We must believe in the goodness of God, not despair and give thanks for everything, although this can be difficult.

Prayer of Leo Optinsky for those who died unbaptized

“Have mercy, O Lord, on the soul of Your servant (name), who passed into eternal life without Holy Baptism. Your destinies are unsearchable. Do not make this my prayer a sin for me. But Thy holy will be done.”

It is good to pray to the Mother of God, reading the rosary “Virgin Mother of God, rejoice...” (as much as your strength allows: from 30 to 150 times a day). At the beginning and at the end of this rule, one must ask the Mother of God to help the soul of the deceased.

About prayer for the unbaptized.

Commemoration of unbaptized people is not performed at Proskomedia and public worship.

Unfortunately, very often people come to church and, with tears in their eyes, ask if it is possible to remember deceased unbaptized relatives. The Church does not pray for the unbaptized, since these people did not enter the saving fence of the Church during their lives. Unbaptized people there are dead members cut off from the whole body of the Church. One can only regret them, but it is no longer possible to cure them.

One often hears reproaches that the Church acts cruelly towards the unbaptized dead, and among them there are very good and good people. So what was stopping you? good people become members of the Church? Probably everyone had their reasons, but at the heart of it all lies a lack of faith in God. And the soul took this disbelief with it into the afterlife, where it no longer acquires new qualities.

At the same time, the Church does not forbid personal, home prayer for loved ones who died unbaptized, but only home prayer! Naturally, the person praying needs to be a baptized Orthodox himself and to pray for an unbaptized relative, take a blessing from the priest.

The prayer for the unbaptized is based on an incident that occurred in Optina Hermitage. One day, a student approached Elder Leonid of Opinsk (+1841) with the question of whether it was possible to pray for his deceased suicidal father, and how. To which the elder replied: “Commit both yourself and the fate of your parent to the will of the Lord, all-wise and all-powerful. Pray to the Most Good Creator, thereby fulfilling the duty of love and the duties of a filial, virtuous and wise in spirit like this: “Seek, Lord, the lost soul of my father: If possible, have mercy! Your destinies are unsearchable. Do not make this my prayer a sin for me. But Thy holy will be done." Following the example of this prayer, you can pray for the unbaptized, as well as for the non-Orthodox or baptized, but apostatized from the faith.

The fact that the unbaptized can receive some relief through prayer is known from the life of St. Macarius Egyptian. One day, Saint Macarius, having encountered the skull of a dead pagan priest in the desert, entered into a conversation with him. The monk prayed a lot for the dead and therefore wanted to know the effect of prayers. “When you pray for the dead,” the skull answered, “we feel some kind of consolation.” This incident gives us hope that our prayers for the unfortunate who died unbaptized will bring them some consolation.

Don't forget about this effective means to alleviate the lot of the dead, like alms, which in these cases takes on special significance.

The merciful Lord allowed one of His saints to intercede before Him for the souls of the departed non-Orthodox. This saint is the martyr Uar, who accepted death for Christ in 307. Once, in a vision of blessed Cleopatra, the saint told her that for her good deeds he begged God to forgive the sins of all her deceased pagan relatives. Since then, Orthodox Christians have turned to the martyr Uar in prayer to intercede with the Lord for their relatives and friends who died unbaptized into the Orthodox faith.

Prayer to the holy martyr Huar

O holy martyr Uare, venerable, we kindle with zeal for the Lord Christ, you confessed the Heavenly King before the tormentor, and for Him you suffered zealously, and now the Church honors you, as glorified by the Lord Christ with the glory of Heaven, Who has given you the grace of great boldness towards Him, and now you stand before Him with the Angels, and rejoice in the Highest, and see clearly the Holy Trinity, and enjoy the light of the Beginning Radiance, remember also our relatives' yearning, who died in wickedness, accept our petition, and like Cleopatrine, you freed the unfaithful race from eternal torment by Your prayers , so remember those who were buried in opposition to God, who died unbaptized, striving to ask for deliverance from eternal darkness, so that with one mouth and one heart we may all praise the Most Merciful Creator forever and ever. Amen.

2) Priest Valentin Ulyakhin, doctor economic sciences, has been serving in the Church of the Holy Trinity on Pyatnitskaya for many years. This temple is also notable for the fact that every week a prayer service to St. martyr Uaru - prayers are offered to the Lord for those dearest who died unbaptized. It is difficult to imagine how heavy the burden of human grief falls on the priest’s shoulders. But Father Valentin has a kind, encouraging word for everyone.

In the Holy Trinity Church on Pyatnitskaya Street in Moscow there is an icon of the martyr Uar, where every Saturday they pray for relief of the fate of the unbaptized dead, people come from afar, from the outskirts of vast Russia, because this is the only temple in Moscow where it is performed with the blessing His Holiness Patriarch Prayer service to the martyr Uar. There is a canon to the martyr Uar, there are prayers that have their own history. There are people who doubt the possibility of praying for the unbaptized. Moreover, sometimes you can find in the press the opinion that you should under no circumstances pray for the unbaptized. From a formal point of view, we cannot and should not pray for the unbaptized; we cannot perform a funeral service, or commemorate them at funeral services, and under no circumstances commemorate them at a proskomedia. But surprisingly, in the Holy Tradition the life of the martyr Uar gives, nevertheless, such an opportunity to pray to Uar for the unbaptized.

The relics of Uar were found by a certain lady Cleopatra, who built a temple over his relics and prayed for her unbaptized dead son, and the Lord Himself came to her along with Uar, thus, on a mystical level, it was confirmed that her prayer reached the Lord, and the Lord eased the fate her unbaptized son.

They often come to Trinity Church to pray for the unbaptized, and they pray with tears. Sometimes you ask, “You pray with such zeal, do you have any consolation after this prayer?” And many people tell me that in a thin light sleep the souls of the unbaptized come, communicate with their relatives, ask them to pray and say that the prayer is heard by God, that they feel better. And this is precisely what the canon to the martyr Uar is about, that it is possible to alleviate the lot of the unbaptized and this is confirmed by practice. There were cases when we didn’t know - baptized person or not, and then the soul came and reported that baptism had taken place and it was possible to perform the funeral service according to the rules. This applied in particular to many soldiers who died and were thought to be unbaptized. But they were baptized before the war by monks who lived secretly in those years in Soviet Russia. And when they questioned distant relatives, it actually turned out that the person had been baptized. Such cases also happen repeatedly.

When people of different classes, different ranks gather, they are all equal in one thing - in their love for those who gave them life. And turning to Christ, accepting the sacrament of the Church, preparing for this sacrament, and some for the first time cross the threshold of the temple to pray for their unbaptized relatives, they may never have come if the Lord, through his martyr Uar, had not called them. And so they go to the temple and in prayer to Uaru they open their souls, they come to know the love of God, they feel better. And they continue on their arduous path to God, they become churchgoers. And now the parish of the Trinity Church on Pyatnitskaya Street consists of ¾ of those people who began their churching with a prayer to the martyr Uar for the unbaptized. This confirms that the Lord Himself blesses. Indeed, canonically we cannot pray, but Holy Tradition allowed this. A Sacred Tradition has no less, but even higher value than Holy Scripture. Orthodox Christians accept Holy Tradition as their source Holy Scripture. And the practice of prayers to the martyr Uar confirms that this prayer is saving, saving, first of all, for the living and those who cross the threshold of the temple. And what leads them is love, love for their relatives. But God is love, which means God leads them, which means the Lord himself blesses them.
