During renovations, you don’t always want to deal with “wet” work - laying tiles, for example. There is a simpler technology - decorating walls with plastic panels. You can handle it yourself, even without much experience in construction work, and in a day or two you can carry out repairs in the bathroom, toilet, balcony/loggia and kitchen.

Types of plastic panels for wall decoration

This type of finishing material is made from PVC - polyvinyl chloride. In a semi-liquid state, this polymer is squeezed into a mold. A drawing is applied to the finished panels. It can be first printed on film, then glued and varnished (laminated panels). Moreover, these panels may not have a smooth, but a textured surface. The design applied using this technology retains paint for a long time, but similar materials cost about twice as much.

Another technology is to apply the design directly to the plastic, then cover it with two layers of varnish. Cheaper technology, but the service life and quality of the drawing are lower.

Ceiling and wall

There are two types of plastic panels - for ceilings and for walls. Those intended for the ceiling have a thickness of 5 mm and thinner partitions, and those for walls have a thickness of 8 to 10 mm and thicker walls and partitions. You can determine which species is in front of you by looking at the cut. This type of finishing material is distinguished by the fact that it has a smooth surface and, when joined tightly, the seams are not very noticeable.

There is another standard size, which is also called plastic lining - with a thickness of 10 mm, the panel has a width of 10 cm and shaped edges that are more characteristic of plastic lining. If you decorate the walls with this material, the surface will not be flat, but embossed, similar to wooden lining.

Sizes and prices

The width of plastic wall panels is most often 25 cm and 37 cm, length - 2700 cm and 3000 cm. There are other non-standard sizes, but these are the most common. There is quite a wide variation in price - it depends on the wall thickness, type of printing, manufacturer, complexity of the design, etc.

Thin PVC wall panels

Above we discussed products that consist of two layers of plastic connected by jumpers. Along with a lot of advantages, they have a rather serious drawback: if you apply enough force, they can be pushed through. This is often the reason for refusing to use them. Therefore, thin plastic wall panels appeared on the market not so long ago. Their thickness is 3 mm and there are no cells. Only a layer of plastic with a pattern applied to the surface. Accordingly, there is nothing to push. The dimensions of this type of panels are 950 * 480 mm or so.

Their installation method is different - they are glued to the walls. Due to the fact that this finishing material has a very small thickness, it is cut with scissors and, moreover, takes up very little space from the room - 3 mm.

What to look for when choosing

It is clear that the choice begins with color and pattern. But to avoid any difficulties during the installation process, you need to keep track of some points when purchasing:

It is also worth checking the quality of the polymer used. You need to take one plank so that it bends by about 30% and straighten it. After that, examine it. If there is no damage to the plastic or pattern, everything is fine.

The correct technology for installing plastic panels on walls

The good thing about decorating walls with plastic panels is that you can do it yourself and it takes a little time. Well, one more plus - you need the usual tools:

This is all that may be needed when installing PVC panels on walls. The time required is one to two days, depending on the availability of experience and the area being repaired.

What to make the sheathing from

Installation of PVC panels on walls according to the technology should be done on the lathing. The sheathing is made from:

Of the three listed materials, it is best to use plastic for installing plastic panels in the bathroom. It reacts little to temperature changes, does not react in any way to changes in humidity, does not rot or crack. Galvanization feels good in a humid environment, but it must be of good quality, otherwise it will still rust. The most unimportant material is wood, but even with proper treatment they can last for years. And for this to happen, carefully follow the recommendations for applying an antibacterial composition. In some cases, it is enough to brush it a couple of times, in others it is enough to soak it for a while and then dry it.

How to make lathing

Before installing the sheathing under the PVC panels, the walls must be prepared. First, remove the old finish and anything that might fall off. If there are large recesses on the surface, it is better to seal them, and strongly protruding parts can be trimmed off. After the wall has become more or less even, it is treated with a primer with an antibacterial component (against fungi and mold). After this, you can begin installing the sheathing.

The sheathing strips are positioned perpendicular to the PVC panels. That is, if you attach the panels vertically, the sheathing – horizontally and vice versa. Install the sheathing strips at a distance of 30-50 cm from each other. The optimal distance is 30 cm (the “walk” panel will be smaller). The strips are attached at the beginning and end of the wall, as well as around window and door openings.

The sheathing under the plastic panels is most often secured with dowels. 6*40 mm are placed in a concrete wall (so that a piece does not fall out from the back side of the concrete partition), in a brick wall - 6*60 mm. Fasteners are installed in increments of 50-60 cm.

In order for the wall decoration with plastic panels to be smooth and beautiful, the lathing must be placed in the same plane. To do this, place wooden spacers under the wooden planks where necessary (pieces of plywood are possible), but they also need to be treated with a compound against fungi and mold.

You can also use perforated hangers for plasterboard ceilings. They are used when placing metal profiles in one plane, but they can also be used when installing wooden blocks.

If you decide to make a sheathing from plastic mounting profiles, then it is worth considering one point: they must be strictly perpendicular to the PVC panels. Even a slight deviation can lead to the fact that the clamps simply do not snap into place and will not hold anything. Therefore, check the verticals/horizontals very carefully. One more point: it is better to install wooden planks of the same thickness as the plastic guides along the perimeter of the walls, doors and windows: we will attach the starting profiles to them.

Installation of plastic panels

In addition to the plastic wall panels themselves, you will need to buy some more accessories in the store - these are corner, starting and F-shaped profiles. They are necessary to give the finish a finished and neat look.

At the floor and ceiling level, you can use either a starter or ceiling plinth. The starting one is just a narrow strip of plastic, and the ceiling plinth is a shaped product with a characteristic cut.

Decorating walls with PVC panels begins with installing selected profiles in one of the corners and at the top/bottom. They are attached to the installed sheathing strips. Fasteners are selected depending on what material was chosen for the sheathing. The result is something very similar to a frame. We will insert the panels into it.

The problem point is the junction of the corner and ceiling plinth (we do the same below)

Next, cut the first panel to the length or height of the wall. Plastic wall panels are cut with a saw and a metal blade. When working with your hand (and even more so with your foot), do not lean on it - push. To ensure that the strip fits into its designated place without any problems, carefully measure the length, subtract 4-5 mm and cut it off.

The protruding spike is cut off from the first strip, after which the cut side is inserted into the corner profile, tucking the edges into the top and bottom. Lightly tapping with your palm, push the bar all the way, check the verticality of the level, applying it to the edge of the installed strip. Then they fix the lathing to each plank.

Having installed and secured the first strip, cut off the second, join it to the first, secure it, etc. No difficulties. Problems may only arise with the last panel on the wall. You usually have to cut it to width, and then try to tuck it directly into the groove of the previous plank and into the corner or starting profile. It doesn’t always work out neatly—the plastic often gets jammed. This situation can be avoided by not securing the second corner profile. Then a corner profile is put on the panel cut to size, the whole thing is joined together with the previous plank and only then the corner profile is secured. This is not entirely correct, since only one half of the corner profile is attached, while the second remains unfastened. But after you’ve been tired of trying to do it right, you don’t pay attention to it anymore. Then everything is repeated - further finishing of the walls with plastic panels occurs in exactly the same way.

How to do without corner profiles

If we are accustomed to the presence of skirting boards at the top and bottom of the wall, then not everyone likes corner profiles. When decorating walls with plastic panels, you can do without them. You will need a sharp wallpaper or stationery knife. If you cut a strip of plastic from the back in the right place, the panel can be bent. This will not be visible from the front side, and you will be able to avoid suffering with the last panel. And outwardly, many people like this way more.

To correctly determine where to cut, insert the penultimate panel and secure it. We take a piece of panel a few centimeters wide, insert it into the already installed one and mark where the corner is located. We take it out, cut out a strip of plastic in the marked place, and try it on. If everything is fine, we use this piece as a template, moving the exact location of the cut. This is also not a technology, but it seems to me that decorating the walls with plastic panels looks better. Especially if the color and texture of the corner profile is different.

How else can you fix PVC panels on the walls?

Although the method described above for decorating walls with plastic panels is not very complicated, it is not suitable for everyone. For example, the walls are perfectly smooth after plastering with beacons or. It is clear that lathing is not needed. It will only take up space. In this case, they violate technology - they glue plastic panels onto silicone or polyurethane foam.

In this case, the starting profiles will still have to be installed, but they will need to be secured to the appropriate dowels. After that, foam (zigzag) or silicone is applied to the back side of the panel (in islands in increments of 10-15 cm), the bar is inserted into the profiles, pressed, and fixed in one or two places with appropriate fasteners. They continue in the same spirit.

The advantage of the method is that it is very fast, the disadvantage is that it only works on smooth (or almost) walls. But the most important thing is that it is simply impossible to remove the finish without destroying the plastic panels.

Plastic panels (lining) are used for finishing the inside of houses and apartments. They are actively used to give the desired appearance to various rooms, such as balconies, bathrooms, baths, shops, offices. Installing PVC wall panels with your own hands is a simple task that can be done by anyone who has the desire to do the repairs themselves.

First of all, you should decide what is hidden behind the abbreviation PVC. There is nothing difficult or scary about this. Under the three letters lies a simple one - polyvinyl chloride, or even simpler, it is a type of plastic. It has many advantages that are successfully used in the manufacture of finishing materials.

PVC wall panels

To be more convincing, we should list the positive qualities that PVC panels have. So:

  1. The technical characteristics of this product allow them to be used in rooms that are exposed to moisture. This material is completely indestructible and does not absorb water. The only thing that can reduce the effectiveness of using plastic panels is improper use of the frame.
  2. If you have sufficiently smooth surfaces, you don’t have to deal with additional wall finishing. Installation of PVC wall panels does not require much effort and time.
  3. They can retain their appearance for quite a long time. Namely, do not fade under the influence of sunlight, do not absorb various fumes. To clean them, you don’t need any special tricks - just wash the products with soapy water and wipe dry.
  4. If a frame is used, additional sound insulation is created. This is achieved due to the air cushion between the wall and the panels. If desired, this space can be used for additional insulation of the room, as well as for hiding communications.
  5. The cost of this material is quite low compared to other types. Do not think that such an attractive price category greatly affects the quality of the product. Naturally, if you purchase panels that have neither factory packaging nor certificates, then you can run into a cheap fake.
  6. Long service life. Yes, such lining can serve for many years. The only thing they are afraid of is temperature changes. This can cause the panels to become unusable. You should also pay attention to mechanical stress, which can damage the integrity of the structure.

PVC panels are very popular due to their low price, as well as many other advantages

It becomes clear that this product can be used in different cases. Of course, it is better to avoid installing panels when making renovations in children's and bedrooms.

Material selection

Any hardware store has a large selection of plastic panels. They can be of various sizes, colors and textures. Modern technologies make it possible to obtain products that can add a certain elegance to any interior.

Plastic panels are an excellent alternative to ceramic tiles for finishing a bathroom, but subject to the correct choice of material

What do you pay attention to when choosing this material:

  • The panels are quite light, but you should immediately be wary if the weight is too light. This may indicate that a fake is taking place. Unfortunately, this happens even in large specialized stores.
  • There should be no flaws on the front or back side. Namely, any cracks, chips, or color inhomogeneities immediately indicate that the product is of poor quality.
  • When choosing PVC panels, you need to pay attention to the release date of different packages. It is better to select ones that have the same markings. Otherwise, significant variation may occur.

On a note! When choosing PVC products, do not hesitate to ask the seller for all the necessary documents. This is a guarantee of safety and long service life of the material.

Various methods of installing wall panels

To carry out the work of repairing or decorating a room with PVC plastic panels, there are two main options.

1. Installation of the frame.

This is the simplest option. Various materials are used for its implementation. The following can be distinguished:

  • Wooden beam. Great for many spaces, but cannot be used in areas with high humidity.
  • Plastic strips. These are specially designed products that allow you to quickly install panels.
  • Metallic profile. The same option is used that allows you to install gypsum board sheets. But this method is quite expensive, although very reliable. It is better to use for the ceiling.

2. Installation of panels without sheathing.

Installation of panels directly on the wall

This method requires some skill and fairly smooth walls. But, if you understand how this process happens, then skills come quite quickly. There is a significant drawback - if one of the elements becomes unusable, you will have to tear down the entire wall.

Each option is selected individually. It is necessary to take into account the size of the room, its shortcomings and climatic features.

Preparation stage

This is done using a common tool that can be found in almost every home owner.

You will need the following:

  • tape measure and level;
  • pencil and meter ruler;
  • drills and screwdrivers;
  • self-tapping screws (nails) and dowels;
  • stapler;
  • jigsaw (saw).

Don't forget that you will also need consumables. These are primarily drills, bits, files and staples. It is better to prepare everything in advance, then the repair time will be significantly reduced.

Do-it-yourself installation of wall panels should not be carried out immediately after purchase; you need to give them time to adapt to the conditions of the room. To do this, they are unpacked and allowed to rest. It’s better to spend a day on this.

On a note! If during repairs the installation of plastic panels is planned without using a frame, then the surface is first primed. To do this, use solutions that are selected based on the material of the walls.

Making a frame

As already noted, the lathing can be of several types. In principle, they are all similar in their installation conditions. The installed frame allows you to correct significant unevenness and imperfections in the walls. And also create an additional layer of thermal insulation and hide numerous communications.

On a note! It must be taken into account that the distance between the guides should be from 30 to 45 cm.

Installation of plastic elements

After installing the frame, you can begin installing the facing products. Do-it-yourself installation of PVC panels is carried out according to the following scheme (let’s look at the example of a wooden frame):

VIDEO: Installation of panels on the sheathing

Installing wall panels on the frame is not difficult. In the absence of sheathing, everything is done using glue, which is applied to the finishing element. The main thing is to do everything quickly and do not forget that correcting the shortcomings will be extremely difficult.

Today we will tell you how to attach plastic panels to the wall, we will introduce you to the features of the procedure, methods of fastening and other nuances that will be useful in your work. After reading the article, you will understand the issues of installing slats and will be able to decide on the most profitable method.

Plastic panels are presented in a wide range. A variety of shades allows you to choose the right option for each home Source images.kz.prom.st

general information

Modern panels are made from environmentally friendly and safe plastic. There are single-color, bright and striped models. Popular options that imitate wood, with a rough surface, as well as textures that connect without visible marks.

Since the quality of modern plastic is comparatively higher than just ten years ago, it is therefore used not only for office interior design, but also in residential buildings.

Finishing the walls with PVC panels does not make it difficult to install all the necessary communications. They are mounted in horizontal and vertical positions.

They are lightweight, so you don't need to buy a lot of fasteners to keep them in place.

The advantage of slats is as follows:

  1. They are strong and durable. They withstand high humidity, retain color for a long time and do not fade.
  2. They have low cost.
  3. Provide good sound insulation.
  4. Easy and quick to install. Experts say that this is easier than assembling a construction set.
  5. Antistatic, so dust does not accumulate on them. It is enough to wash them with warm water and detergents.

But there are several disadvantages. For example, they can be easily damaged by impact, and sudden temperature changes can cause deformation.

Source myprofnastil.ru

Smooth elements will provide an aesthetic appearance to the walls. If there are no sharp changes and waves, then the joints will become almost invisible.

Preparation for the procedure

The installation process begins after small preparatory work:

  1. The walls are cleaned of dirt and old wallpaper is removed.
  2. Treat the surface with a primer with an antifungal effect.
  3. They check whether there are any irregularities on the wall and determine the level of its plane.

Attention! Before construction work, it is recommended to keep the material indoors so that it adapts to new temperature and humidity conditions.

How to calculate how much material is needed

Before attaching plastic panels, they decide to install them horizontally or vertically.

If the choice fell on the second option, then to calculate the amount of material required, first measure the perimeter of the room. The width of all openings is subtracted from it and divided by the width of one rail. To the resulting value you need to add several panels in reserve.

Source zab.ru

If installation in a horizontal position is preferable, then after measuring the area of the room, all openings are subtracted from the result. The resulting figure is divided by the area of one rail. Here you need to leave a margin of at least 10%, since in this case more material is spent on trimming.

To determine the number of slats and fasteners, it is also necessary to carry out calculations. After measuring the height of the walls, the indicator is divided by the sheathing pitch, which is usually within 0.5 m. The resulting number is multiplied by the perimeter of the room. The data will indicate the size of the plastic panels in linear meters. To the result you need to add the perimeter of the openings for windows and doors.

Basic methods of attaching slats

There are several installation methods. To do this, use glue, screws and clamps. To use the first option, you need to have very even and smooth walls in the house. Regular adhesives will not mount the panels. You need to acquire special tools.

If you use glue for PVC panels, this method will greatly facilitate and reduce the cost of the installation process, since there is no need to attach the sheathing.

Installation of plastic sheets is not difficult Source guruotdelki.ru

But the main drawback is that if damaged, it cannot be removed from the wall; it will have to be torn off along with the primer.

Installation with glue is carried out as follows:

  1. The foundation is being prepared. Dirt is wiped off the wall.
  2. The reverse side is treated with adhesive. The glue is applied in thin strips at a short distance from each other.
  3. The rail is applied to the desired location and gently pressed, holding for a few seconds.

Liquid nails have some specific features. For example, if you apply them to a panel and attach them to the ceiling, you will have to wait half an hour for the glue to set.

To avoid having to wait so long, you need to:

  1. Treat the panel with the product and wait for 6-7 minutes.
  2. Attach it to the ceiling, so it will stick faster.
You must first apply a primer to the ceiling base. This will make it easier for the panels to adhere to the wall.

Another fastening method is to use self-tapping screws. This is a reliable option that does not require perfectly leveling the surface. To screw in the screws, you will have to get a screwdriver, otherwise installation will take a lot of time.

Plastic lathing is considered one of the most affordable and reliable Source roomester.ru

The disadvantages are that a wooden frame is more suitable for self-tapping screws, so you will have to first saw the timber and treat it with an antiseptic.

The most popular installation of plastic panels is with clamps. They can be quickly attached to the battens and the slats can be securely fixed to the wall. The lathing is made from a metal profile, and damaged lamellas can be easily replaced with new ones.

Lathing options

If the room is dry, then you can do without battens and simply attach the panels to the wall. But this option is not suitable for wet rooms.

Most often they prefer to use a plastic or metal mounting profile as a sheathing. In this case, special clips are used to attach the panels. This makes them easier to install and remove.

Metal lathing is usually installed before attaching plastic panels to the ceiling in rooms with high humidity levels.

They are installed in several stages:

  • Fasten the profile with self-tapping screws to the ceiling.
  • Install the mounting profile around the perimeter of the room.
  • The transverse profile is fixed as a basis for the plastic.

Source wiki.4-u.info
  • Install the L-shaped profile to the mounting one.
  • The panels are attached.
  • Install the last element.
  • Mount the ceiling plinth.

Plastic crates are very convenient. They are produced in the form of a U-shaped profile with edges curved inward. The panels are fixed with special clamps that move along guides.

There are also soft lathing. They are made from double-sided foam tape. It has the same properties as PVC, and the adhesive layer has increased viscosity and elasticity. For such a sheathing you will need adhesive tape from 25 mm to 60 mm.

Installation process

When installing PVC panels on the wall, you need to take into account that changes in environmental conditions can affect the condition of the material. Therefore, when adjusting the panels in height, it is better to leave a small gap.

Before attaching PVC panels to the wall, you should remember that:

  1. If the slats are attached with nails to the sheathing, then it will not be possible to reuse the material, since it will be practically destroyed during the dismantling process.
  2. The best fastening option is with clamps. But another popular method is using staples, which are driven in with a special stapler.

Source doma125.ru

Installation is carried out in several stages:

  1. First, the fittings are placed. For large panels that will cover the entire wall from bottom to top, it is recommended to add a ceiling plinth to the top beam.
  2. The panel is inserted into the mount and secured with nails or staples. After this, check how evenly the first panel is installed.
  3. After this, proceed to the next panel, which is inserted with its narrow end into the groove of the previous one; such actions are performed until all elements are installed.
  4. If the dimensions of the PVC panel are not suitable in width, then cut off the excess with a knife, moving it along the panel. It is advisable to carry out the procedure so that the slats fit tightly to each other.

When installing panels yourself, they often use glue and lathing installation options, but professional workers can also use more complex methods.

Moldings for joints

The final stage of installation consists of installing the moldings. With the help of these elements, they improve the appearance of the slats and also make the design holistic. They allow you to hide the joints and places where the panels adjoin the ceiling.

Source elite-decor.com.ua

Typically, moldings are installed at a distance of 5 mm from the corner. With this placement option, the cellular structure of the finishing material is not destroyed. These elements are attached with screws or regular nails.

There is a large selection of molding colors that allow you to implement any design solutions. Since they are made from polyvinyl chloride, you can choose a wood-look option. Moldings can withstand high humidity and have a long service life.

Advice! Before installing plastic panels, it is preferable to first install communication systems. With their help, you can make pipes and electrical wiring less noticeable.

Additional information about fastening plastic panels in the video:

  1. The panels are most often used to decorate balconies, loggias, bathrooms, hallways and living rooms. If you decide to install them in the bedroom and children's room, then it is better to give preference to more breathable materials.
  2. For rooms with air conditioning, it is better to buy seamless plastic.
  3. It is not recommended to completely decorate the entire bedroom with plastic. It is recommended for certain sections of walls.
  4. It is not advisable to use these elements to create a kitchen design. Fat and moisture will settle on the panels, which will create excellent conditions for the proliferation of pathogenic microorganisms.

Conclusion

Plastic panels have become popular in recent years. They can be installed on the wall, but most often they use lathing. It is made of metal, plastic or wood. The slats are attached to it with glue, liquid nails or clamps. Due to their ability to withstand harsh conditions, they are used in almost all rooms of the house. The popularity of PVC panels is also due to the fact that their price is quite affordable and they do not require special care.

PVC panels are a cheap material widely used for finishing residential premises and utility blocks. At the relatively low cost of such cladding, the decorative qualities of the coating are quite high. These are practical and durable materials, which are also easy to install - even a novice finisher can install the panels with his own hands.

Advantages and disadvantages

Let us dwell in more detail on the advantages of plastic panels:

  • Hygroscopicity. Plastic does not absorb moisture, it is not subject to rotting, mold does not appear in it and fungi do not multiply, which is why the panels are mainly used in rooms with high humidity (in the kitchen/shower and bathroom).
  • Material It has a long service life, it is wear-resistant and resistant to minor impacts. Of course, if you damage it with a hammer or an ax, the panels will crack, but even minor mechanical impacts will not leave any marks on the surface.

  • PVC panels retain their aesthetic appearance for many years - they do not turn yellow over time and do not fade when exposed to direct sunlight.
  • Easy to use is also a significant advantage - the panels are unpretentious in maintenance, for their high-quality cleaning you can use the simplest detergents, but still you should not use abrasives and strong acid-base compounds.
  • Laying the panels will not take much time and will not require special skills and effort; even a non-professional can handle the job.
  • Low price. Moreover, this is the case when a reduction in cost does not entail a deterioration in quality.

  • Safety. In the production of panels, the most advanced technologies for processing raw materials are used, so that the product does not emit harmful and toxic substances. Hazardous materials are difficult to find even among counterfeits.
  • The coating is easy to repair– to do this, it is enough to replace one broken panel, rather than removing the entire covering.
  • The panels are very aesthetic– Manufacturers bring to the market products in a wide range of colors and textures. Consumers can choose slabs that imitate the texture of wood and stone. Many companies apply photo printing to panels, and some manufacturers produce non-standard products that differ significantly in appearance from the usual “official” options.

  • Possibility of installation in small spaces– wall panels are great for creating niches in corners of apartments where working with other materials is difficult.
  • PVC plates are mounted together with ventilation grilles and sockets; they are not conspicuous and look harmonious in the overall interior concept.
  • Many advantages of cladding with PVC panels are associated with the installation of the frame. Due to the formation of an air cushion between the wall and the panels, additional sound insulation is provided, and the space itself can be successfully used for communications or insulation of a living space.

There are also disadvantages associated with the use of PVC panels:

  • When exposed to fire, the material supports combustion and at the same time releases substances hazardous to human health.
  • The panels do not allow air to pass through, completely blocking its circulation and necessary ventilation. That is why the scope of application of the panels is limited - they are not recommended for installation in bedrooms and children's rooms.
  • In the southern regions, insects inhabit the voids between the panels and the wall, which are quite difficult to remove.
  • When installing panels, the use of special tools is required and this is also considered a disadvantage. However, all the necessary equipment can be purchased at any hardware store.

Criterias of choice

The choice of plastic panels is large; in any construction department store you can find a wide range of models of any colors and textures. Thanks to modern technologies, products are created that can add shine and emphasize the conceptual character of any room.

What you should pay special attention to when choosing panels:

  • PVC products are light in weight, but if the panels you purchase are too light, this may mean that you are looking at a low-quality fake;
  • there should be no coating defects on either side: chips, cracks and scratches indicate poor quality of the product;
  • When purchasing panels, you should check the release date and markings - it is optimal to purchase those where these values are approximately the same - even within the same model there can be significant differences.

PVC panels are overwhelmingly produced in Europe and China. Depending on the manufacturer, the technical parameters of the product may vary, however The following are considered optimal characteristics:

  • front panel thickness – in the range from 1.5 to 2 mm;
  • number of stiffeners – from 20 to 29;
  • lamella weight – from 1.7 to 2 kg per square meter. m.
  • the stiffeners are damaged and bent;
  • the line of the drawing is not clearly expressed;
  • the color of the panels within the same stack varies;
  • the surface has cracks and scratches;
  • the segments have different sizes.

It is quite easy to check how strong the material is - just press it a little: normally the front side bends and then returns to its previous position. If this does not happen, it means that the panel is deformed, it contains a large amount of chalk and the service life of such a product will be short.

  • the thickness of the plastic should be the same everywhere, any thickening and, conversely, thinner places indicate low quality;
  • the thicker the lintels at the cut site, the stronger and more durable the structure will be;
  • the cells must be perfectly smooth, without lumps or dents, so you should inspect all panels even if they are packed.

And of course, you need to choose the appropriate texture and color. Options with a pattern are very attractive. In most cases, a pattern is applied to PVC sheet panels. As a rule, it is printed on film, and then glued to a panel and laminated. Such panels can have a smooth or textured surface, they are very durable, and their price is significantly higher than their counterparts without a pattern.

The most common panel options are wall and ceiling. These modifications are not interchangeable, the sheet of wall panels is not universal, it is not recommended to be used for ceiling cladding, and vice versa, ceiling tiles are not suitable for installation on walls.

There are no strict rigidity requirements for ceiling panels - they are practically not subjected to physical stress. Their standard sizes are:

  • thickness – from 3 to 5 mm;
  • width – from 125 to 380 mm;
  • length – up to 10 m.

The parameters of wall plates differ:

  • thickness – in the range of 6-10 mm;
  • width – from 250 to 300 mm;
  • length - less than 6 meters.

Wall panels are often thicker, since when covered with wide slabs, the coating visually appears smoother and more intact (since there are fewer joints). At the same time, many finishers prefer a narrow sheet, because working with it is easier and faster.

There is a noticeable variation in prices for PVC panels - the cost of the product is affected by the wall thickness, as well as the type of printing and brand.

Preparation and calculation

At the stage of preparing the finishing work, it is very important to take correct measurements and make an accurate calculation of the required number of panels and related materials. This is necessary in order to avoid unnecessary costs for purchasing unnecessary products.

The installation of polyvinyl chloride panels involves their arrangement vertically and horizontally - this completely depends on individual taste preferences.

If you decide to choose a vertical arrangement of the slabs, then the calculation is carried out as follows: the perimeter of the room is measured, the width of the door and window openings is subtracted from the resulting value and the difference is divided by the width of the panel. As a result of such calculations, the number of panels required for finishing is obtained. However, you need to add about 10% for the space above and below the openings.

For a horizontal arrangement, the area of the room is calculated, from which the area of the openings is subtracted, and the resulting value is divided by the area of the panel.

Again, 10-15% is added to the resulting quotient in case of damage to the coating, that is, as a reserve. Keep in mind that when installing horizontally, you will have to cut the panels, so you may end up with a lot of scraps.

Let's look at an example of arranging panels horizontally. Suppose we need to veneer the walls of a room 6x8 meters with a ceiling height of 2.5 m. The room has 4 windows with dimensions of 1.2x1.8 m and one arch with parameters of 2.2x0.9.

Panels 250x30 cm were purchased for finishing.

The total S of the walls will be:

(6+6+8+8) x2.5 = 70 sq. m.

S window and door openings:

1.8x1.2x4+2.2x0.9 = 8.64+1.98 = 10.62 sq. m.

S to finish will be equal to:

70 sq. m. -10.62 sq. m. = 59.38 sq. m.

2.5x0.3 = 0.75 sq. m.

Accordingly, to work you need to buy:

59.38/0.75 = 79.17 panels.

Having rounded the resulting value upward, we have 80 pieces, add 10-15% here and we get approximately 100 panels.

Tools and accessories

It is necessary to prepare for working with PVC panels. As already mentioned, the use of this finishing material requires the use of professional tools, namely:

  • hammer drill– will be needed when forming the frame;
  • screwdriver– used when fixing panels to bars or metal profiles (a hammer drill can also cope with this task, but it is quite heavy, so it will not be easy for a finisher with little experience to cope with it);
  • jigsaw with medium-sized teeth or a circular saw;

  • coward with an angle of 90 and 45 g;
  • stapler– used when installing wood sheathing;
  • rubber mallet– required for removing jammed slabs; if such a procedure is carried out manually, then there is a high probability of breakage of the sheathing and the panel itself;
  • putty knife– it is used to bend the profile when you need to insert the very last panel. It is optimal to use a tool with a length of 80 to 120 cm.

Auxiliary tool:

  • tape measure for taking measurements;
  • pencil or marker - for making notes on panels;
  • level - to measure deviations from the ideal coating geometry;
  • square, moldings, clips, edging;
  • elements for fastening (dowels, screws and clamps).

To grout the seams between the panels, use a sealant and a tool for applying it. Many experts recommend adding an antiseptic to prevent the possible appearance of mold and other pathogens.

Installation methods

Work with plastic panels begins with surface preparation. To do this, be sure to remove the old coating, seal all existing cracks, chips and cracks - only then will the finishing coating have a perfectly even and smooth appearance, and most importantly, will it be durable. To prevent the appearance of mold and moss, it is recommended to cover the base base with solutions containing fungicides. is a strong antiseptic that will protect the house from the appearance of “uninvited guests” for many years.

At this point the preliminary stage of work ends, then the frame is mounted and the panels are laid directly, and for this the location of the frame racks must be determined.

For ceilings and walls, markings are carried out in this order:

  1. First, fix a point at a distance of 2 cm from the floor or wall, and through it draw a straight line along the entire perimeter. It is at this stage that you will need a building level and painting thread.
  2. When marking the walls, exactly the same line is drawn under the ceiling covering.
  3. Next, transverse lines are drawn in increments of 30-40 cm - they will become “beacons” for constructing the frame.

Walls

When decorating walls with PVC panels, the lathing is installed first. Most often, wooden slats are used for it, less often - a metal profile (the second can be bent, the first cannot).

Exactly according to the markings, using a hammer drill, holes are made for fasteners in increments of approximately 40-50 cm, after which the frame element is mounted to the wall. At this stage, it is necessary to provide places for fixing the wires and make sure that they will not protrude beyond the sheathing.

In order to create an additional layer of sound and heat insulation between the slats, special materials should be laid. They can have different structures and, accordingly, are also attached in different ways (with dowels or glue). After this, the panels are laid directly on the box.

If desired, you can use the frameless method and glue the slabs directly to the walls – directly to the concrete. It’s fast and convenient. However, it should be taken into account that the treated surface must have ideal geometry - any irregularities impair the quality of adhesion and ultimately shorten the service life of the finish.

With the frameless method, liquid nails or special glue for PVC are used. It is very important to use formulations that do not contain solvents. Otherwise, the plastic will gradually deteriorate.

Work with this type of installation is carried out in the following sequence:

  • cleaning the old coating, priming and drying;
  • preparing an adhesive solution with mandatory adherence to the instructions and the specified proportions of the substance;
  • depending on the consistency of the solution, a tool for application is selected - it can be a brush or a paint roller or a spatula;

  • using glue, fix the corner piece to the concrete wall, to which the ordinary element is subsequently attached using built-in grooves;
  • The panels are pressed with force for 10-15 seconds and allowed to set;
  • By analogy, install all the remaining tiles;
  • attach a decorative element;
  • the seams are treated with grout or sealant, which acts as a decorative connector.

Ceiling

You can cover the ceiling with plastic panels in the same way as with walls - with or without a frame.

It is necessary to assemble the frame in rooms with high humidity and in low-heated spaces. The slabs are fixed using fasteners and profiles, so the fixation point is not weakened by external adverse influences.

The frame is nothing more than a sheathing in increments of 40-60 cm. As a rule, its assembly is made of wooden slats, metal profiles or plastic. The panels are screwed to the sheathing. This repair requires time, but it can be carried out by a home craftsman even with little experience.

Frameless fixation is a simpler method; it involves preliminary cleaning of the base and further fixing of the slabs with a special compound, that is, the slabs can simply be glued.

This is a fairly simple and quick way to cover the surface, however, it significantly limits interior design solutions in terms of lighting, since it does not allow the installation of spotlights and LED strips, as well as work on drywall to build multi-level structures.

Window

PVC panels are widely used when installing slopes on windows. This is truly an excellent solution that allows you to quickly, easily and cheaply create an aesthetic decorative coating. Thanks to a large selection of panels, everyone can choose exactly the modification that can truly transform their windows.

There are several ways to finish slopes.

Using a metal profile

With this method, profiles are installed, which become the frame for mounting the panels.

The procedure for this method is as follows:

  • a starting strip is installed along the edge of the window frame using self-tapping screws;
  • slats are mounted along the opposite edge of the window, it creates a complete outline.

The prepared panel is cut to the required size, then inserted into the profile, and attached to the rail at the other edge. The panels need to be joined to each other. An F-profile is used as a platband. The advantage of this method is high speed and ease of installation. However, this technology requires additional laying of voids that may form during the work.

Fixation with glue

Everything is simple here - the panels need to be glued to the slopes using polyurethane foam or glue.

The procedure for this is as follows:

  • first you should prepare the window well, remove excess foam, putty and level the surface;
  • panels are cut in accordance with the parameters of the slopes;
  • each part is carefully coated with glue, then the fragment is pressed to the surface for a few seconds and torn off - the final fixation is carried out after a couple of minutes;
  • At the final stage, the seams are treated with sealant and closed with corners of a suitable color.

PVC panels are a popular finishing material that is durable, practical and affordable. Such coatings can be used for cladding walls and for decorating ceilings. Installing plastic panels is quite simple and quick. It is quite possible to cope with such work on your own. Today we will talk in more detail about how to attach PVC panels to walls.

Advantages and disadvantages

Plastic panels are a popular and common wall covering. They can be found in many stores specializing in the sale of finishing materials.

Wide sheets and linings made of plastic are in great demand because they have many positive qualities.

  • First of all, it should be noted the durability of such finishing materials. In our climate, their service life can be more than 20 years.
  • Such materials are wear-resistant. They are not afraid of dampness and moisture. In addition, they are not susceptible to rotting, like natural wood.
  • Plastic panels do not require complex and regular maintenance. Dust and dirt do not accumulate on their surface. If the finish gets dirty, it can be cleaned with a regular damp cloth.
  • PVC panels have soundproofing properties, making them ideal for wall cladding.

  • Using plastic panels, you can divide the space into functional zones.
  • Plastic panels are lightweight materials, which makes them quite easy to work with. All processes can be handled without the involvement of assistants.
  • Plastic is a very malleable material - it can easily be processed through various types of processing. Therefore, in stores you can find PVC panels with a variety of colors, textures, prints and patterns.

  • These finishing materials can be used in interiors of a wide variety of styles. The only exception would be elaborate and pompous ensembles, which should contain exclusively expensive and natural elements.
  • You can install plastic sheets both in a city apartment and in a private house.
  • Behind the panels you can hide various communications, for example, electrical wiring.
  • It is quite possible to install PVC panels on walls with your own hands, since this process is not complicated and inaccessible. To do this, you do not need to stock up on expensive tools.

Of course, PVC wall panels are not ideal finishing materials. They also have their own weaknesses.

Knowing all the advantages and disadvantages of PVC panels, it will be easier to work with them. You can avoid many mistakes during the installation process.

Criterias of choice

Polyvinyl chloride sheets produced by various manufacturers have different properties and performance characteristics. When purchasing a suitable material, you need to pay attention to its quality - this is the main criterion on which you should rely.

  • their stiffeners have damage (even barely noticeable) or are completely deformed;
  • the stiffeners protrude too much;
  • if the lines of the design on the front half are poorly defined, and there is also blurring of the edges;

  • scratches and other minor damage are visible on the surface of the panels;
  • lamellas from one set differ from each other in shade and brightness (such a finish will look inharmonious and awkward on the walls);
  • panels from one set have different sizes (in this case, the finishing installation technology will be noticeably more complicated, since elements of different sizes will not be fixed well).

Pay attention to the decorative layer of the panels. Any drawings, prints and paints should not be blurry or too dull. These features may indicate low quality material. Such coatings will quickly lose their original appearance.

Currently, in stores you can find polyvinyl chloride panels made in China and Europe. European products are considered to be of higher quality.

When choosing a suitable material, you need to pay attention to its density. It is this parameter that determines how durable and wear-resistant the panel is. This indicator is influenced by the number of rigid ribs that are located in the inner part of the sheets.

The optimal indicators are:

  • thickness of the front side – 2-1.5 mm;
  • number of stiffeners – 20-30;
  • total weight of the part is 2-1.7 kg/m2.

To make sure the material is reliable and durable, press it with your finger. The front side of the panel should bend slightly under its pressure, and then quickly return to its original state. If the lamella is severely deformed, this indicates that it contains a large amount of chalk - such materials do not last long and are very fragile.

Preparatory stage

If you decide to install PVC panels yourself, then you should adhere to a specific work plan. If you do everything correctly at each stage, the result will not disappoint you.

First you need to prepare the wall base for future cladding with plastic. This work is especially important if you plan to attach PVC panels using a frameless method.

Work algorithm.

  • First you need to remove old trim and any elements that may fall off the wall.
  • It is also necessary to get rid of all floor defects. If there are noticeable potholes or cracks on their surface, then they should be repaired with a suitable solution.
  • Areas that are too protruding need to be trimmed down.
  • When the wall is leveled and all defects have been eliminated, it must be treated with a high-quality primer with antibacterial components. Such coatings are necessary to ensure that the base is protected from the formation of mold or mildew.

Only after all the work has been done to prepare the walls can you proceed to constructing the sheathing (if you are using the frame method of installing the material).

Tools and accessories

It is necessary to prepare properly for the installation of polyvinyl chloride panels and stock up on all the necessary tools and components.

You will need these tools:

  • tape measure with a pencil or marker (indelible) to mark;
  • a hacksaw with small teeth for cutting sheet panels;
  • building level and plumb line so as not to encounter distortions and unevenness;
  • triangle;
  • plastic profile, slats for decorating the corners of the structure;

  • self-tapping screws, dowel-nails, clamps for fixing various elements on the base;
  • screwdriver and hammer drill;
  • sealing compound;
  • glue;
  • antiseptic.

Also in the process you will need special accessories:

  • external and internal corners;
  • docking profiles;
  • starting profiles;
  • F-shaped profiles;
  • ceiling and floor plinths.

All tools and accessories must be of high quality and reliable.

Calculation

It is recommended to proceed to finishing work only after all the necessary calculations have been made. This stage is needed to find out the exact number of PVC panels that you will need for wall cladding. Thanks to accurate calculations, you can avoid unnecessary overpayments due to the purchase of material with a large supply.

Fastening PVC sheets involves their horizontal or vertical arrangement. In this case, the choice remains only with the owners.

  • first you need to measure the entire room (that is, find out the length around the perimeter);
  • then you should subtract the width of window and door openings;
  • Now the remainder must be divided by the width of one PVC panel.

As a result of such simple calculations, you will get the number of panels needed to finish the room. It is recommended to add a couple of additional units to the resulting value. This is necessary so that you have a reserve in case some parts are damaged.

As for calculating the amount of material horizontally, it is carried out as follows:

  • first you need to measure the area of the room;
  • then the area of door and window openings should be subtracted from it;
  • the resulting number must be divided by the area of one panel from the kit.

Add 10% to the final figure - this will be a reserve. It is worth considering that when laying horizontally, plastic panels will have to be cut, so you will have leftovers in the form of PVC scraps.

Installation methods

Installation of plastic panels cannot be called too complicated. According to experts, it is quite possible to cope with such work alone, since PVC sheets do not have much weight.

There are two main methods for installing such facing materials. The first of them is frame. When choosing this installation option, you must be prepared to manufacture a reliable and high-quality sheathing to which the plastic sheets will be attached. The second installation method is frameless. With this option, you do not have to make a separate frame, but you will need to carefully prepare the wall base for the future application of finishing materials. Otherwise, the PVC panels will not adhere tightly and reliably to the floors.

It is worth considering in more detail how the installation of PVC sheets occurs in both cases.

On the frame

When you have completed the preparation of the rough floor, you can begin preparing a high-quality frame. It can be made of metal profiles or wood. Both options are quite reliable and durable. However, if you want to build a structure from wood, then it must be additionally treated with antiseptic agents to protect it from rotting and drying out.

The guide battens must be installed perpendicular to the PVC panels. Simply put, if you are going to attach the sheets horizontally, then the sheathing should be vertical and vice versa.

The frame strips should be mounted at a distance of 30 cm - this value is optimal in this case. These parts must be attached at the beginning and end of the wall, as well as around door and window openings.

It is recommended to fasten the frame structure for plastic panels to the bases with dowels. 6x40 mm fasteners are inserted into the concrete floor (this is necessary so that a piece does not fall off on the other side of the concrete base), and 6x60 mm into the brick floor. It is recommended to install fasteners keeping a distance of 50-60 cm.

The sheathing must be placed in one plane– this way the plastic covering will turn out smooth and neat. To achieve this effect, you can use small wooden pads or regular pieces of plywood and install them under the frame strips. Do not forget that these elements also need to be treated with antiseptics.

It is also permissible to use special perforated hangers, which are usually used for plasterboard ceiling structures. Such elements are necessary for placing metal profiles in one plane, but they can also be used in the case of wood frames.

If you plan to use plastic profiles to construct the frame, then you should take into account one important nuance: these elements should only be positioned perpendicular to the PVC panels. The slightest deviation can lead to many problems, for example, the clamps may not close and will not perform their main function. To avoid such errors, you should constantly check the verticals and horizontals.

Experts also advise installing wooden frame elements around the perimeter of the room. the same thickness as PVC profiles, since the starting panels will be attached to these bases.

Next, at the floor and ceiling level, a starting or ceiling plinth should be used. The starting element is a narrow plastic strip. Ceiling plinth is a shaped part with a special cutout.

Laying of PVC profiles should begin in one of the corners(at the top or bottom). The finishing should be fastened to the frame strips. Fasteners are selected depending on the material you used to construct the sheathing. The result is a structure that resembles a frame. It is into this that the PVC panels will be inserted.

Next, you need to trim the starting lamella in accordance with the length and height of the wall. To cut off excess pieces, you should use a hacksaw or a special metal saw. When cutting the panel, do not press too hard on it with your foot or hand - you will push it or break it. In order for the first part to fit correctly in the right place, you need to measure its length again. Subtract 4-5 cm from it and cut it off.

It is necessary to cut off the protruding spike at the starting strip. After this, the cut side of this part must be inserted into the corner profile, tucking the edges into the upper and lower profiles. It is worth tapping lightly with your palm to drive the bar as deep as possible.

Be sure to place a level against the edge of the installed element to check its levelness. If the part is positioned correctly, then you can safely fix it to each lathing strip.

When you install the launch panel, you should cut the second one, join it to the first one and secure it. Further actions are very simple and the same. Problems often arise only with the installation of the last lamella on the ceiling. Most often, this part has to be cut to width, after which you need to try to tuck it into both the groove and the profile (starting or corner) at the same time. This is not always possible to do carefully, since the plastic wrinkles easily. To avoid such a problem, you should not install a second corner profile. In this case, this part is put on a finishing panel adjusted to size. These assembled elements are then joined to the previous lamella. The profile is assigned only after these actions.

Further covering of the floors with PVC panels occurs in exactly the same way.

According to experienced finishers, the frame method of installing plastic panels is reliable, but more complex than frameless.

Frameless

In cases where the floors are smooth, plastered or covered with plasterboard, they do not require the installation of lathing for plastic finishing. In this case, it will only take away the free space in the room. PVC panels are attached to such bases using silicone, liquid nails or polyurethane foam.

However, in this case, the starting panels will still have to be fixed to the walls using dowels.

After this, the following is applied to the back half of the sheets:

  • foam (it is better to lay it on PVC sheets in a zigzag pattern);
  • silicone (it is recommended to apply it to the panels in small portions at intervals of 10-15 cm).

Then the bar is inserted into the profiles and pressed tightly. After this, it is fixed using fasteners. Further installation of plastic panels should continue according to the same principle.

The main advantage of this installation method is that it takes minimal free time. However, you can only use it if the walls in your home have a perfectly flat surface without serious flaws. It is worth considering that in the future it will hardly be possible to remove such finishing without damaging the plastic.

Cladding walls with plastic is not the most difficult job. The main thing is to follow the instructions provided and use high-quality materials/tools.

If you decide to do such finishing work yourself, you should take into account some recommendations from specialists.

  • It is not recommended to combine PVC panels with more expensive materials. For example, a combination of luxurious marble and polyvinyl chloride will look ridiculous and disharmonious.
  • According to experienced craftsmen, hot melt adhesive cannot be used for PVC.
  • To carry out proper installation of panels around sockets, you should make all the necessary holes for them in the material in advance. Be sure to turn off the electricity before doing this.

  • If you have constructed a wooden sheathing in the bathroom or kitchen, then you need to add a couple more millimeters to the resulting indentation, since wood is subject to deformation under the influence of dampness, moisture and temperature changes.
  • PVC panels are a popular and in demand material, but they are not recommended for installation in the bedroom (both children's and adults). For such rooms it is better to choose more “breathable” materials.
  • It is not recommended to cover walls with PVC panels immediately after purchase. They must rest in a dry and warm room for at least 2 hours.
  • Wall finishing should begin only after the floor and ceiling are ready.
  • The advantages of polyvinyl chloride panels include their ability to hide various communications. However, these elements must still be accessible to the owners. To do this, use removable inserts.

  • If you use liquid nails to fasten PVC sheets, then you should not delay removing their sagging - these compounds dry out very quickly.
  • Wall finishing materials should not have different openings at the junction points. This must be monitored when selecting plastic panels.
  • At each stage of laying PVC panels, it is necessary to check the evenness of the structure using a level. This device will help avoid bevels and curvature of the finish.
  • Experts recommend purchasing high-quality polyvinyl chloride panels. Do not look for too cheap coatings - such materials are already available. Ask the seller for quality certificates for the canvas. Study them carefully. Such finishing materials should not contain toxic compounds.

Design options

Polyvinyl chloride panels look organic in many settings. Designers do not recommend combining such coatings in one ensemble with very expensive and pompous coatings (for example, natural stone). Compared to such finishing materials, PVC sheets may seem too modest and even “poor”.

Plastic panels can enliven the interior of the hallway, corridor, living room, bathroom and kitchen. The main thing is to choose coatings of suitable color and texture.

In a small loft-style kitchen, the dining area can be highlighted with polyvinyl chloride panels, imitating dark red brickwork. Against such a background, a laconic white table and metal chairs with dark wooden backs and armrests will look harmonious. The dining nook will look complete if you hang a large dark clock above the table.

PVC panels can be used to decorate a kitchen backsplash. For example, in a room with burgundy walls, a white floor and the same white furniture, an apron trimmed with a wide plastic sheet with a picture of coffee beans will look impressive.

In the hallway, PVC panels are most often used. In such rooms, coatings that imitate brick and stone look especially attractive. As a rule, they are adjacent to ordinary wallpaper in neutral colors. For example, canvases imitating light brown stone will look harmonious in tandem with yellow wallpaper and a wooden front door.

Also, PVC panels with a silk-screen printing effect look good in a hallway or corridor. Against the background of such light canvases, both entrance and interior doors in dark shades look advantageous. Such coverings look attractive next to wooden furniture and decorative items.

With the help of polyvinyl chloride panels you can enliven the interior of the living room. In such environments, 3D coatings with relief surfaces look especially original and stylish. For example, you can use spectacular textured black canvases to decorate an accent wall with a TV, and place a dark chocolate woven sofa opposite it. To prevent the ensemble from seeming too dark and oppressive, light laminate should be placed on the floor.
