If you decide to start renovations, you should definitely think about replacing the window sills in your apartment. Most often, such products are installed immediately after installing the windows, since their installation must be accompanied by careful sealing, and for this it is necessary to completely process the entire structure - both the window sill and the window. Sometimes replacement is carried out after redevelopment or after the renovation has already been completed.

If you need to install a wider or narrower window sill, you must carefully dismantle the old one and install a new element.

For example, when it is necessary to install wider devices or, conversely, narrower ones. In such cases, it is necessary to carefully dismantle the old product and then install a new element.

An operation that seems simple at first glance still requires knowledge of the basic steps, since incorrect replacement of window sills can negatively affect the function of the window.

Reason for installation plastic device There is also the replacement of old structures - sometimes the window is still completely strong, it does not need repair or replacement, but the condition is very deplorable.

Today there is a huge selection materials - wood, plastic, stone, concrete, chipboard, metal. The choice depends on your taste.

Wooden and concrete walls need frequent painting, since high humidity along with temperature changes have a very negative effect on the condition of the paint - it cracks and falls off.

It is more practical to install plastic structures - they do not need painting and are easy to clean and wash.

Replacing window sills is not a particularly difficult job, but it is quite dirty, so it must be done before starting repairs or general cleaning to prevent surfaces from becoming dusty.

First of all, you need to choose the material.

Today there are many different options - from the usual plastic systems to exotic granite.

Practical and inexpensive option— PVC elements, but they are not particularly environmentally friendly, which is why they are most often installed in office premises.

If you have done expensive renovations in your apartment, chipboard and MDF surfaces look great - they are durable and beautiful, but you should know that any damage to the outer layer leads to swelling, since their inner layers do not tolerate moisture.

Installation

Installing a plastic window sill is a fairly simple procedure that literally anyone can do. They are very functional products - they are not exposed to moisture, are heat-resistant, and are easy to process.

First of all, let's decide on the equipment and tools that will be needed for the installation work (both plastic and wooden):

  • scarpel or chisel;
  • perforator;
  • polyurethane foam;
  • hammer;
  • saw for plastic or wood;
  • silicone sealant;
  • cement mortar.

Dismantling

Dismantle old element You can use a scarpel, a chisel or a hammer drill - with these tools you first remove the cement mortar at the ends of the structure.

Then the old window sill is knocked down with gentle blows of a hammer, and then pulled out. The vacated space is cleared of construction debris, dried mortar, and dust, after which a new canvas is tried on.

If necessary, the area for a new one is leveled.

A high-quality window sill is a durable and stable structure. All seams are at the junction with window frame must be well sealed with sealant or foam. This prevents cold air from entering, drafts from the street and helps retain heat inside the room.

At both ends of plastic or wooden bases It is necessary to cut out certain parts in order to accurately fit the system to the window opening.

It is important to ensure that there are no gaps left near the wall, however, it is also necessary to leave space for installation (to level it). Also new stove products can be cut according to the parameters of the old canvas.

When using MDF, chipboard or wooden devices, their untreated ends must be covered with sealant to increase moisture resistance (this does not apply to plastic ones).

If the height of the new element is less than the height of the old one, then the window sill niche should be cement screed to the required height, to which the new one will then be installed.

  • To install the window sill, use polyurethane foam - it is applied in longitudinal stripes. In this case, the 1st strip should be applied directly near the window (it will serve as an additional protector from the cold), then the stripes are applied at any distance.

If you are installing a window sill on wooden blocks, you need to apply polyurethane foam between them and install the countertop on it. The grooves (both side and rear) also need to be foamed.

Final points

Decorate the finished window sill and enjoy the beautiful view.

The window sill is leveled, then a stop is made from it to the top of the window opening. The polyurethane foam will expand after hardening, and this stop will not allow it to move the level alignment.

Then a spacer weight is installed on the window sill, after which the canvas is foamed from below. Remember that polyurethane foam is extremely difficult to remove.

If it does get on the surface, you should not clean it off with a knife or other sharp objects - it is better to use chemicals.

After hardening (usually at least 24 hours), the excess polyurethane foam is cut off, and the joints are sealed using silicone sealant.

In some cases, the process of dismantling and installing window sills can be done on your own. This is especially true for situations where the measures are not related to a complete replacement window designs. However, before proceeding directly to the work itself, it is recommended in any circumstances to consult with a specialist, who must confirm the possibility of dismantling. Otherwise, there is a risk of breaking the tightness of the window blocks and the frame structure.

In what situations may it be necessary to replace the window sill?

Since in most cases the replacement of the window sill is carried out simultaneously with the installation of new windows, cases of separate installation are not so common. Basically, such events are carried out when an old structural element has become unusable, or in a situation where a team of installers has installed window blocks, and it was decided to install window sills during upcoming repair work. The process of dismantling the window sill

Dismantling of window sills, like windows, can be done with or without preservation. This applies more to models made of wood, stone and concrete. If you choose the option of saving, then you need to be prepared for the fact that the walls will be significantly damaged. In these cases, the space around the ends of the window sills placed on the walls is cleared of frozen building mixtures, and then the canvas itself, using a mount, is carefully and slowly removed from the opening. However, when changing wooden and stone window sills, they often choose the option without saving. This method requires sawing a piece of wood with a hacksaw or breaking concrete or stone with a sledgehammer, and then using a pry bar to carefully remove the fragments. Sometimes you need a grinder to cut the reinforcement that connects a concrete window sill from the inside.

Since plastic window sills are most often replaced recently, its dismantling is worth considering in more detail:

    Under the canvas, carefully beat off the plaster or putty that was used to seal the joints.

    Carefully trim the cured polyurethane foam.

    If the joint between the frame and the window sill is sealed with silicone, then it is also advisable to cut the seam with a linoleum knife or spatula.

    While tilting and rocking the window sill, slowly pull the canvas towards you.

    Clear the installation site of the new window sill from construction debris.

In some cases, it is necessary to carefully remove a layer of putty or plaster around the ends of the window sill placed on the walls. However, the canvas is most often removed without this operation, since it is held in a given position by other means.

Dismantling of some stone, concrete and wooden window sills is sometimes possible only together with the window. This is explained individual characteristics structures and methods of fastening. This possibility should always be taken into account when planning a replacement event, since in some cases a full-scale replacement of windows may be necessary.

Installation of window sills

Most models of modern window sills are installed using leveling beacons, spacers, etc. Sometimes auxiliary fastening elements – corners and various brackets – can be additionally used. Any window sills - plastic, wood and stone - must be installed by specialists. In some simple cases, it is possible to install PVC models by people who have basic skills in working with modern building materials and the tool:

If it is not possible to use two-component foam, it is necessary to load the window sill from above. This will prevent ordinary sealant from bending the canvas outward when expanding.
