Make a flowerbed outside from old pallets. DIY flower beds made from pallets photo. Country furniture made from pallets

Vertical gardening has long been popular in the West; in our country this trend in landscape design is only gaining momentum. Due to the novelty of this phenomenon, it is sometimes difficult to understand what vertical flower beds are. Such flower beds are very diverse both in form and content. Let's try to figure out how to organize them and what flowers to use in our article.

First of all, vertical flower beds are flowers directly located on the walls, as in the photo above.

The second option for vertical flower beds is more familiar; it is used, as a rule, for zoning an area. These are arches, pergolas, trellises and other objects entwined with climbing varieties of flowers that perform the function of demarcating different zones of the garden, as can be seen in the photo.

Finally, the last option is single structures of flowers with a vertical orientation, the so-called flower towers.

DIY vertical flower garden

Despite the apparent complexity of the design, anyone can create a vertical flower garden with their own hands.

Pallet flower bed

The first type of vertical flower beds, located on a vertical surface, can be made using available means available to everyone. Most often, old pallets (pallets) are used to decorate the walls of houses, balconies or outbuildings with flowers. In the photo you can see an example of creating a vertical flower bed from a pallet.

To make such a flowerbed with your own hands, you just need to cover the top of the tray with insulating material, fill it with soil and plant your favorite flowers in the holes. Then this structure is attached to a vertical surface.

Flowerbed made of foil insulation

In addition to pallets, it is possible to use another base for a vertical flower garden. Foil insulation is perfect. It is enough to fold it in half, sew the required number of pockets, where soil is then poured, and plant flowers. You can see what such a flower garden looks like in the photo.

Decorating landscape structures with climbing plants

Another option for vertical flower beds is to decorate various landscape structures with climbing plants:

  • arches,
  • pergola,
  • trellises,
  • gazebos, etc.

To create such a flower garden, you simply need to plant climbing varieties of roses, clematis or other climbing flowers. In terms of care, it will be enough to promptly tie and trim their shoots to the chosen design, as in the photo.

Finally, the last option is a flower tower. This is a great idea for decorating a limited space. Making such a structure with your own hands is quite simple. To do this you will need materials available to everyone.

  1. First of all, we choose the base of the flower bed. This could be an old pipe, a barrel, or poles stacked on top of each other.
  2. The second step is to cut holes in the barrel or pipe in a checkerboard pattern, after which the earth is filled.
  3. And finally, the third step - flowers are planted in the holes. Different versions of the basics can be seen in the photo.

If you use pallets as a base, then simply fill them with compost, plant the plants in the side holes and stack them on top of each other.

You can make a flower tower with your own hands using a flower pot and a wire fence, which will become the frame of the tower. It is enough to make a short cylinder of wire and, securing it, insert it into the pot. Next, you need to put a plastic bag inside the cylinder and also carefully secure it - the base for the flower tower is ready. All that remains is to fill the bag with soil and make slits for the flowers, as in the photo.

When choosing flowers for a vertical flower bed, you should give preference to unpretentious hanging varieties with flowers flowing down. Perfect for:

  • loosestrife,
  • nasturtium,
  • forget-me-nots,
  • equal leaf bell,
  • begonias,
  • chlorophytum,
  • carnation,
  • grass,
  • geranium,
  • sage,
  • lipsticks
  • and, of course, petunias.

When creating a vertical flower garden with your own hands, remember that flowers need drainage. To do this, at the bottom of each pocket or tray (depending on the chosen base), hydrogel granules are laid out - a substance that absorbs and retains liquid. After this, soil is poured into the mold and mixed with hydrogel granules in the proportion of 1 gram of hydrogel per liter of soil.

today we'll see how to make it out of wood pallet can be done with your own hands small vertical garden for decorating a balcony or cottage.

The first thing to do is to find a pallet that is in good condition, without rotting or protruding nails, and also without an unpleasant odor.

You will also need:

  • 2 large bags of soil
  • approximately 16 bags of annual flowers
  • small roll of landscape fabric
  • stapler
  • staples
  • sandpaper

First, put the pallet in order, make sure that all the boards are well nailed and do not wobble, there are no nicks or protruding chips. If necessary, sand down to smooth out any uneven surfaces and coat the wooden pallet with a solution that will prevent insects from eating and rotting.

Decide which side of the pallet will be the bottom when you lean the finished flower bed against the wall. Next, lay the pallet face down, unroll the landscape fabric in two layers, and staple it to the top and side trims. You need to cover the sides, back and bottom, and leave the top open. Fold the edges of the fabric under the staples. The fabric must be well stretched so as not to sag under the weight of the soil.

The idea is to create pockets of sorts for planting plants that will peek out between the slats. Therefore, mark in the back with a pencil where to staple the fabric to form the desired pockets and attach. Run the stapler several times along the seam so that the kidney does not spill from one compartment to another.

Now comes the fun part - planting flowers! Carry the pallet as close as possible to where it will be placed and place it face up. The first layer of plants is on the top of the tray. Fill the soil and plant fairly tightly so that there are no very noticeable gaps between the bushes.

Then pour the bag of soil onto the pallet and distribute it evenly among the compartments. Repeat with the second bag. Compact the soil in the pockets, moisten it and start planting flowers.

The result should be dense rows of plants so that there is no room for soil to spill down when you place the tray vertically. In small spaces between the bushes, compact the soil as much as possible.

Now leave the pallet - the flowerbed in a horizontal position for a couple of weeks so that the plants are well strengthened by their roots in the ground. Naturally, do not forget to water and, if desired, fertilize with liquid solutions. When the plants are sufficiently rooted, feel free to place the pallet vertically. Vertical garden - DIY flowerbed is ready!

Wooden pallets, which, by the way, can be made with your own hands, have a wide range of uses. First of all, they have always been used as containers for loaded boxes, packs, building materials, bags of dry mixtures, etc. That is, exactly as they should. But certain qualities of these products, namely good geometry, strength and durability, led summer residents to believe that they can be used to make playgrounds, prefabricated objects, fences and furniture.

How to make a structure

Pallets can have different parameters and purposes, be purchased or homemade. As for assembling them yourself, it’s quite simple. You just need to sketch out a plan with exact dimensions, take high-quality production material, namely boards and timber, and simply fasten everything together according to the established pattern. As you can see, here the question of purchasing and overpaying disappears, since a skilled summer resident can easily make a good dozen pallets in a day.

Features of wooden pallets

Why are these warehouse accessories used so widely in the country? What prompted us to pay attention to a standard wooden product, which has become an element for many practical products.

First of all, this is the cost of the finished product. For production, inexpensive wood is used, and more often, pine. It is rough, without a bright expression of texture, like expensive wood, but quite strong and durable. In addition, wood lends itself well to processing, due to which the service life can be extended for a certain period.

Ideas for use in the garden

Yes, we have indeed talked several times about pallets and their practicality, but today our topic is more expanded, which will give you the opportunity not only to use our ideas, but also to generate your own.

Wooden pallet platform

The platform can have different purposes, but more often it is used as platforms raised above ground level in places where there is loose and impassable soil. For example, this is part of the utility yard where water often collects. The reason for such puddles and pollution can be a high level of groundwater, heavy rains, melted snow, and therefore platforms are built temporarily, but often remain in such a place for a long time.

A platform made from pallets is very easy to create. It is necessary to place several pieces to cover the desired area, very evenly. You can use wedges, bricks, boards, and construction waste for this. Most often, this is exactly what happens - the site is filled with bulk materials, and the main production element is installed on top.

But there is one important requirement that will ensure safety. This is a single surface, which means the pallets must be fastened together. This can be done using small wooden planks that are inserted into the gap between the elements, the seam of the platform. Next, they are simply screwed on with self-tapping screws using a screwdriver.

Flooring in outbuildings

This flooring is installed in barns, hangars, cellars, cellars, storerooms, storage rooms and even farms where animals are kept. It ensures floor dryness and ventilation, as well as minimal contact with the same cold concrete floor. The only negative is that if the floor is laid in rooms with high humidity, the material produced will not last long. If such a floor is installed as an insulating layer, so as not to walk on a cold floor, the flooring can last for decades with proper care.

There are very few differences here with a standard street platform, because wooden pallets are also evenly laid on the surface and connected to each other. The only addition may be an additional floor for certain requirements. For example, such a wooden floor is often laid in winter poultry houses, but to prevent chickens, ducks and other representatives of this class from falling into the cells, a fine steel mesh is laid on top of the floor. In other cases, after strengthening the structures on the floor, for example, in cellars or tool sheds, an additional flooring of wooden boards is possible.

Wooden pallets for household needs

We looked at many small country houses where pallets can play a fundamental role. They are good as a building material for prefabricated frame objects, and therefore it is quite simple to build the same firewood shed or rabbitry from them!

The standard geometry of the correct shapes makes the pallets very convenient to use. From them you can assemble a square or rectangular structure of the required height and area, you just need to correctly determine the loads and the number of supports. Therefore, these wooden products are used more and more often in commercial construction.

A kennel for your favorite dog, a pen for small birds, a stall for larger animals - all this can be made from the mentioned structures.

It is worth remembering such structures as compost heaps, where a cube made from such elements will become the best closed storage. This is a durable and ventilated place into which it is convenient to load various waste, and from it get homemade fertilizers of excellent quality for the garden, vegetable garden, greenhouse and flower beds.

Country fencing made from pallets

We have reviewed a huge number of fences and all kinds of enclosures on our website in recent years. Frame, brick, metal and plastic, polycarbonate and even wheels, decorative wooden and wrought iron fences, stone and concrete fences, simple and attractive, as well as with maximum security. All of them are painted by us from start to finish, or more precisely, from production to installation. But there is another interesting type of fencing, which we would like to call very simply - economic.

It often happens at the dacha - something needs to be done, but there is no time or money. This is understandable, because there are always more necessary purchases than the same fence separating the utility yard, or even the vegetable garden from the palisade. But there is also a solution - fencing made of pallets.

Don’t think that this is an old village and inconspicuous option that neighbors and relatives will laugh at. Previously, we believed that a wicker fence in a country house was not the best. And after looking at the original examples, they immediately changed their minds. Now we know for sure that a fence made from wooden pallets can be very successful.

What is needed for this? Only the main element of production, racks made of pipes or rods, a correctly marked installation line, and a little paint or varnish to complete our fence. Simple, cute and will last for years to come…exactly what we need today!

Crafts from pallets in landscape design

It is difficult to imagine wooden structures of this type in a landscape where we have a beautiful gazebo, an alpine slide, and maybe even a small pond with lilies or fish. But previously we had never thought about gabions, which today are firmly established in summer cottages. A composition of metal and stone can create an original and attractive look, but wooden pallets are not suitable for this? Of course not! We can easily fit these products into the landscape, depending on which side you look at.

We suggest starting with something simple, for example, building support walls for landscaping. Vertical structures will be an excellent basis for hanging plants in pots and containers, especially since attaching such containers to a tree will be very simple. Next, you can move on to frame objects, on which, with the help of auxiliary materials, you can create a simple but very high-quality design. Pallet bridges, garden paths, flowering retaining walls and much, much more.

Country furniture made from pallets

We have customized and created quite a lot of country furniture, soft and hard, wooden and combined. But the time has come to pay attention when choosing furniture to wooden pallets, which can become an excellent basis for the production of so-called cabinet furniture.

The base of armchairs, sofas, benches can easily be created from pallets; all that remains is to sew or order pillows from a studio and attach them to it. As a result of minimal labor and financial investments, every summer resident can get quite practical and original furniture for the street and home, install it in a gazebo, patio, recreation area, or simply under a canopy.

Crafts for the garden from pallets (video)

What else can be made from pallets

In fact, we have several dozen ideas, and if we think carefully, we can easily get to a hundred. But we will present you only some of them and very briefly, so as to leave room for your own fantasies at your dacha.

So, a list of country crafts made from wooden pallets:

  • Shoe rack. We install the element vertically, paint it in one of the main colors of the hallway design, and it already serves as a stand or stand for shoes;
  • Hanger. We cut the pallet lengthwise into three parts, and each of them is ready to become a hanger. Just a few hooks for clothes, as well as mounting the entire structure on the wall, and the hanger is ready;
  • Roll-away table. Using just a few pallets, a wooden beam and four wheels, you can make your own rolling table for the sitting area of the veranda or terrace. This can also be used as a coffee table, depending on the size and height;
  • Utility wall in the garage. By installing the pallets vertically to the wall and strengthening them well, you can hang all the tools and small dacha equipment on the boards so that you don’t have to search for them around the dacha for a long time each time;
  • Vertical garden. We have talked many times about the practicality of vertical flower beds and beds in relaxation and cooking areas. On their area you can grow herbs and spices, and pick these products directly during lunch. So, racks for such accessories can be made from the same pallets.

In addition, the mentioned material can be used for decorating flower beds, when the product is simply laid on the soil, and the plants look out from the gaps, for the production of sun loungers in recreation areas, shelves for wine and dishes, a base for mounting lamps and lamps on the street and in the house. It’s also good to make a country cart, a bicycle rack out of pallets, organize a children’s sandbox out of them, or even build a small playhouse for the little ones.

As you can see, the ideas don’t end there, and therefore we are waiting for your opinion on these crafts in the comments, where we would also like to receive instructions for the production of some products invented by you personally.

Our readers have repeatedly asked how you can make a vertical flower bed of extraordinary beauty using wooden pallets. In fact, special beauty is created not only by the appearance of wooden pallets, but also by the flowers or other crops themselves planted in the containers of the pallet. However, such an original flower garden attracts gardeners not only with its style and beauty, but also with its compactness. Vertical flower beds save space, allow you to green the outer walls of buildings and transform their appearance. Read more about this in our article.

Whatever an ingenious person can come up with to make from wooden pallets! A sofa, a bed, a coffee table, a wardrobe, a sideboard, and now another newfangled idea - vertical wooden flower beds. Making them is not that difficult. Let's take a closer look at how this is done.

For a vertical flower bed we will need: a pallet (pallet), geotextiles (landscape fabric), paint or varnish, sandpaper, a furniture stapler, soil for plants and seedlings.

Help from the "Economy"

It is very important to know that not every crop is suitable for a vertical flower garden. For planting, it is best to take seeds of annual plants (marigolds, petunias, lipsticks). In this design you can also grow strawberries, wild strawberries and herbs.

At the first stage of work, it is necessary to remove all roughness and rough spots using sandpaper. And to make the flower bed last longer, the tray can be coated with waterproof paint.

Since the back of the pallet and the sides will be covered with fabric, choose the best side of the pallet for the “face” of the flowerbed.

Place it face down and then cover the “back” of the pallet with fabric. To do this, take geotextiles, fold it in half and, using a furniture stapler, cover the back wall, bottom and two sides of the pallet. The distance between the staples should be no more than 5 cm. We also nail the textiles to the middle bar of the pallet. Lay the tray horizontally and pour plant soil inside.

Advice from the "Household"

You can make pockets from geotextile for each row of the bed. And although it will take a little longer, the soil consumption will be much less.

Now let's start planting flowers for our vertical flower bed. Start planting plants from the bottom row and plant close to each other so that the soil cannot spill out.

We also plant flowers on the very top part of the pallet, which will be the top of our flower bed. We water the seedlings and leave them in a horizontal position for two weeks. This is done so that the plants can take root and the soil can be compacted.

After two weeks, turn the flowerbed vertically and lean it against the wall. Plants should be watered frequently, as the soil will dry out, especially in the upper part of the flowerbed.

In about a month, the seedlings will take root, the roots will sprout and the soil will strengthen.

Advantages of a vertical flower bed:

  • space saving;
  • unusual design;
  • easy care of plants in a flower bed: since the flower garden is most often located at eye level or slightly higher, weeding or harvesting is much easier, unlike a regular garden bed, when you need to bend low and strain your back;
  • plant roots and berries rise high from the ground, which protects them from small pests and rodents.

Disadvantages of a vertical flower bed:

  • plants need frequent watering (a hydrogel or drip irrigation system is used to retain moisture);
  • since only compact containers are used in vertical beds, only low-growing plants that will require good feeding will take root well in them;
  • When planting strawberries in a vertical bed, you need to take into account that the containers must be insulated for the winter so that the root system does not freeze.

Initially, architects began to plant vertical surfaces and used this method to create green recreation areas in the limited space of balconies and terraces.

The idea was so good that it was quickly borrowed by gardeners and farmers, because the height of the site is not limited in any way, which makes it possible to increase the usable space.

Nowadays, vertical beds are widely used by landscape designers, as they fit any created style.

In fact, any gardener can create such beauty on his own site. This does not require a lot of effort, skills or financial investment. And with a little ingenuity and imagination, you will create real Hanging Gardens of Babylon on your site.

A vertical bed has its advantages and disadvantages:

Advantages:

  • ease of care. To plant, process and harvest, you do not need to bend down to the ground, all plants are at an accessible level
  • plant leaves do not come into contact with the ground, therefore they are protected from fungal diseases
  • saving useful site space
  • when the temperature fluctuates sharply, such beds can be easily moved to the utility room
  • the opportunity to decorate not only the landscape, but also the walls of buildings, fences, gazebos
  • absence of weeds and pests in the soil

Flaws:

  • Due to the small volumes of soil in vertical beds, nutrition of the root system is limited, so it is necessary to feed it with mineral fertilizers
  • Perennial crops may not tolerate severe frosts; they should be brought indoors for the winter
  • the soil dries out quickly, more frequent watering is required

Vertical bed made from pallets or pallets

For the garden bed, choose whole pallets that are not affected by rot and mold. Pay attention to the factory markings. Typically, to extend their service life, wood on pallets undergoes chemical or heat treatment.

Both options are suitable for growing ornamental plants, but for the beds from which you will harvest, use only thermally treated pallets. Be sure to check them for nails and knots.

To create a bed you will need: a pallet, non-woven covering material (agrofibre), burlap, thick fabric, soil, seedlings.

Let's get started:

  1. Clean and treat the pallet with paint or a compound for exterior use.
  2. cover the back side with a double layer of agrofibre, burlap or fabric
  3. we plant plants starting from the bottom row
  4. compact the soil tightly and fill all available space
  5. We water the finished bed and leave it in a horizontal position for a month for better root germination and soil consolidation.
  6. hang the bed on the wall, fence, crossbar, you can lean it against the wall

Advice: You can make pockets from agrofibre for each row of the bed. And although it will take a little longer, the soil consumption will be much less.

Idea: Pallets can become the basis for vertical flower beds and herb plantings. Paint them with bright paint, attach existing containers (flower pots or containers, buckets, painted tin cans, linen bags) and plant plants there.

Green beds made from plastic boxes

This idea of plastic bottle boxes is perfect for small plants, flowers, salads, herbs. With the help of such a vertical bed, you will not only fill the table with tasty and vitamin-rich food, but you will also be able to create cozy relaxation areas.

Vertical bed of flower pots

Using ceramic or plastic pots of different sizes you can make a very simple but very beautiful garden bed. Everything is simple here: the structure is installed according to the pyramid principle.

Fill the pot with the largest diameter with soil, and place a pot of smaller diameter on top. So we install all the pots sequentially. You can make several tiers, depending on the number of pots.

From pots of the same diameter, you can make an original bed using a metal rod with a diameter slightly smaller than the hole at the bottom of the pot. Place the first pot on the ground and drive part of the rod into the ground through the hole for stability.

Fill the pot with soil, and then string each pot onto a rod and move them in different directions. The bed is ready, all that remains is to water it and plant the plants.

Vertical bed made of construction mesh

This bed is ideal for growing flowers, herbs, vegetables and even potatoes or mushrooms.

  • the construction mesh must be rolled up in the shape of a pipe with a diameter of 80 - 90 cm.
  • We lay a layer of straw along the outer edge and a layer of compost inside.
  • We fill the soil in layers of 10 cm, plant seeds or tubers of plants in each layer and water them abundantly.

Instead of straw, you can use polyethylene or burlap. This garden bed looks impressive, takes up little space, is mobile and easy to maintain.

Vertical bed-bag

The bag bed can be placed both vertically and horizontally. Give preference to a bag made of natural material, since artificial fibers will collapse under the influence of moisture and sun without lasting even one season. Make a hanging loop on top, fill it with soil and secure it in place.

Make holes in the bag and plant seedlings or tubers in them.

By the way, you don’t have to hang the bag, but install it in a sunny area of the garden or yard. The main thing is to take care of the stability or fastening of your bed.

By analogy with a bag bed, you can build mini beds from a wooden, metal or plastic barrel.

Vertical mini beds made from plastic bottles

One of the most inexpensive options, as waste is used.

Place the bottle with a screwed cap horizontally and cut off the top part, using a knife to make several holes on the opposite side. It turned out to be a wonderful planting container. Having made the required number of containers in this way, assemble them with a rope into one system, as described in the previous version.

By planting low-growing, bright flowers in such a vertical flower bed, you can create entire compositions, flowering walls, and also divide your yard into zones with colorful hedges.

Bed made of plastic pipes

Plastic pipes are affordable and easy to work with. For the beds you will need plastic pipes of small and large diameter, at least 11 cm, and possibly larger.

From cinder blocks

The height and dimensions of your bed in this case depend only on the number of blocks and free space on the site. All you have to do is show your architectural skills to build a stable structure oriented to the south.

This way your plants will receive maximum light and warmth. Try to immediately choose the most illuminated, heated and protected from the wind place for the garden bed, because moving it to another place will be quite troublesome.
