But it’s enough to make one more device for the walk-behind tractor, and you will get a homemade snow blower.

Almost throughout Russia, snow removal is becoming a mandatory procedure outside of large cities. To mechanize this process at low financial cost, we will tell you how to build a snow blower with your own hands.

Operating principle of the screw mechanism

To make the right snow blower, drawings or at least sketches are required.

Before you start developing your own project, you need to understand the structure of the snow removal mechanism. The chamber in which the screws are installed moves with its lower cut along hard ground, picking up snow into its cavity like a bulldozer knife.

A rotary auger structure is installed inside, which moves the snow towards the outlet. This part of the structure can be either in the middle or on one side of the chamber. If the working width is 1 m or more, it is advisable to intake hole in the middle to load the rotor more evenly.

In addition to spirally arranged augers, the rotor is equipped with throwing blades, with the help of which snow falls into the receiving hole. Next, a mechanism comes into operation, pushing the snow through the bell in the desired direction, or plunging it into the body of a nearby vehicle.

DIY snow blower - types of designs

The main difference between auger snow blowers is not the method of collecting snow, but the ability to move it.

  • Passive designs. The operator moves this type of mechanism independently; the power plant only powers the rotor itself. This design is easy to manufacture, but you will have to make a lot of effort when removing snow, especially if the cover is high and dense.

    The snow blower is equipped with a light, low-power motor, for example, from a chainsaw. Or you can adapt an electric motor if the cleaning area is located near the point of connection to electricity.

    Sometimes such a snow blower is mounted on a walk-behind tractor. Only you will need a power take-off shaft to drive the screw mechanism. Then the walk-behind tractor itself provides self-propelled power, and part of the power goes to the drive for snow removal;

  • Self-propelled structures. A homemade snow blower of this type is initially designed to be able to move independently. Either a drive wheel drive is installed on the frame, or a walk-behind tractor with its own wheels is integrated into the design.

    It is more difficult to create such a project, but it pays off with ease of use and less effort that you spend when removing snow;

  • There are also plow-type snow blowers. To work, you only need to make a semicircular blade. However, this design has serious drawbacks.

  • Firstly, such a cleaner requires a very powerful motor, since during work the blade is subject to a lot of snow resistance.

    Secondly, the quality of cleaning leaves much to be desired. At the edge of a cleared road, dense snowdrifts remain, which are more difficult to remove than virgin snow.

    At the same time, the auger cleaner evenly scatters the loosened snow onto large area without creating dense piles.

    How to make an auger snow blower with your own hands?

    First of all, we make a snow removal chamber in which the rotary auger will operate. It must be barrel-shaped, with a receiving sector of at least 120°.

    It can be made from sheet steel 2 mm thick, or from aluminum sheets 3 mm thick. Corrugated aluminum used for off-road vehicle equipment is excellent. It is more rigid due to the molded pattern.

    The most economical option is galvanized iron sheet. Given the low strength, it is better to make the sidewalls from plywood or textolite.

    Now about the most important part of the mechanism - the augers. They can be welded from sheet steel (or the same aluminum), or they can be cut from dense rubber, from an old conveyor used in granaries or in mining operations. If you can ask for old tires at a tire shop, the sidewalls make excellent blades for an auger.

    Making a rotor from steel sheet requires accuracy and careful marking. Moreover, the spiral must be cut absolutely symmetrically, the pitch of rotation must be maintained along the entire length of the structure. Welding of segments is carried out using jigs, which can be made from a pair of vices.

    Throwing blades are made of thicker metal, since they bear the load of throwing already compacted snow.
    The result should be a design like this.

    Important! When designing a rotary auger, do not confuse the direction of rotation and synchronize it with the casting blades. A correctly assembled mechanism allows you to do without an additional rotor in the output pipe. The force of the auger will be enough for the homemade snow blower to throw the snow a sufficient distance.

    The finished auger can be attached to a walk-behind tractor, installed on wheels and moved independently. Or even attach it to the frame in front of an SUV or pickup truck. The main thing is to ensure the supply of torque to the working shaft.

    Power plant for auger snow blower

    If you decide to assemble a snow blower with your own hands based on a walk-behind tractor, the drive design lies on the surface. If you have a power take-off shaft, you simply drive the cardan, chain or belt drive onto the auger shaft, and come up with a clutch mechanism. There is no need to rotate the shaft idle.

    If your walk-behind tractor is equipped only with a gearbox, it will be necessary to remove the belt or chain drive to the auger from the drive axle. Select the gear ratio of pulleys or chain sprockets in the direction of increasing speed.

    The auger works more efficiently when high speed, the worm principle only works on very dense snow. That is, the auger shaft should rotate 2-3 times faster than the wheel shaft.

    If there is an additional rotary mechanism ejection - its speed should be even higher, since the volume of snow in the center of the auger is maximum, and it must be thrown out of the chamber as soon as possible.

    Chainsaw snow blower

    If there is no need to clear driveways to your home and garage, a snow blower can be lightweight and compact. Width work area no more than 50 cm. This design is not necessarily self-propelled, and it does not need such a powerful motor. For example, from a chainsaw.

    We make the chamber with the auger in the same way as in previous version. We only select the appropriate materials and sizes. The auger rotates one revolution in each wing of the chamber; a secondary rotor on the outlet pipe is not needed.

    Such a snow blower can move on improvised skids installed along the edges of the chamber. Instead of a rod, a chain drive is supplied from the chainsaw to the rotor. The drive sprocket remains the same.

    An additional clutch mechanism is not required; the standard chainsaw clutch copes with this task perfectly.

    The only thing you should take care of is weight distribution. Since the chainsaw engine is mounted on one side (this cannot be done in the center, the feed blades get in the way), the control handle must be moved from the center towards the motor mount. Then it will be more convenient to work.

    The outlet pipe is made of plastic water conduit. A diameter of 120-150 mm is quite enough for such a volume of snow.

    This compact snow blower will clear paths in your yard in a few minutes, and it won't take much time to make. In the summer, the chainsaw is removed from the auger and used for its intended purpose.

    All the details and secrets of making a homemade snow blower from a chainsaw are in this video. You don’t even need a drawing, everything is clearly shown and explained in detail.

    DIY electric snow blower

    If you have a conditionally free electric motor with a power of 1-3 kW, you can use it to create a productive snowblower.

    Important! The economy in this design only works when the length of the supply wire does not exceed 30 m. Given the aggressive operating conditions, the wire must be High Quality, and therefore expensive in terms of cost. A regular computer extension cord will not work.

    Considering design feature electric motor, the cleaning mechanism can be made not of a screw, but of a rotary one. The working attachment is placed directly on the motor shaft, the operating speed is high.

    As a working chamber you can use a “snail” from ventilation system. The existing chute is great for throwing out snow. The size of the unit allows it to be moved manually.
    Whatever your design snow blower– the main thing is that you saved money on its purchase.

    Sometimes in winter there is so much snow that it is impossible to remove it with a regular shovel. When living outside the city we're talking about about fairly large areas. To make cleaning work easier, you need to use special equipment. However, acquiring it is very expensive. Many home craftsmen recommend making a snow blower from a chainsaw with your own hands.

    This solution will not only allow you to quickly and inexpensively get rid of snowdrifts, but also give a second life to an old tool instead of throwing it away.

    Advantages of the device

    Homemade snow blower from a chainsaw has several advantages. In particular, the following should be noted:

    Do-it-yourself snow blowers can be made from other products, in particular, walk-behind tractors and more. The most popular option among craftsmen is to make such a device from a Ural brand chainsaw.

    What do you need for work?

    Snow removal machine assembly process will differ depending on which unit this is based on. If we consider the Ural chainsaw as a working material, then it is good because it includes a high-quality transmission that protects the saw from damage. Thanks to the inertial clutch, the insides are reliably protected from external influences. For example, if ingested foreign body The saw switches off instantly, so it can be cleaned and prevent damage.

    This chainsaw is good because the machine based on it does not require use complex parts and darts or acquisitions of complex mechanisms.

    To work you need to prepare the following:

    There is no need to purchase any expensive new materials; most of the listed tools and parts are available in the arsenal of almost everyone home handyman. If they are not available, then you can buy them at a flea market for a very affordable price or ask your friends.

    A homemade snow removal design includes several key components. Among them:

    First you need to provide strong fastening of the structure. The motor should be placed strictly in the center to prevent uneven snow scooping or distortions. It is supplemented with a gas tank, which for convenience is attached to the steering support using a bolted connection. You can take a throttle handle with a cable from an old motorcycle, which will allow you to easily control the engine throttle.

    In order for the snow removal device to work, you will need to weld the frame. There is no need to use complex drawings for this; everything is much simpler than it might seem.

    For the bucket you will need square pipes with parameters 20 by 20 by 1.7 mm. Based on them, you need to assemble a frame, then cover it with galvanized steel so that the bucket does not rust or rot in the future. The steel must have a thickness of 5 mm or more to avoid mechanical damage. Metal sheets Attached to the frame with aluminum rivets. For easier use, the structure needs to be welded to the bucket metal plate, which will allow him to move more easily in the snow. The plate should have a size of up to 60 cm in width and up to 4 cm in length, respectively. It is better to cover it with polyethylene: then snow will not stick to it.

    Shaft design

    Val is one of the key elements in the design of the harvesting machine. It consists of a pipe base to which screws are welded.

    For the shaft you will need to take:

    • steel pipe;
    • a driven star welded to it;
    • bearings for mounting inside the screw pipe;
    • wing rotors and two rotor blades;
    • augers;
    • blade wings;
    • two support corners.

    The cardan shaft is a rotor to which screws are welded parallel to each other, which face different sides. First you will need to take a steel pipe, at the ends of which bearings will be installed. For this purpose, a trunnion is welded to the end of the pipe, and then bearings are mounted on it closed type.

    Then you need to install it in the center of the shaft extra star, which will transmit torque from the motor to the shaft. The elements will be connected by a chain; it can be taken from an old motorcycle. Such a star must have 33 teeth, observing a pitch of 12.7, and it is secured with special bolts. To ensure that the circuit and other parts of the system are not subject to negative external influences, it is recommended to provide a housing for the structure.

    Once the star and bearings are installed, snow clearing blades are welded to the shaft. You will need 6 steel strips located on each side of the shaft.

    Augers are manufactured in different ways. They can be solid and can be ordered or made yourself. The easiest way is to cut the steel into “horseshoes,” which makes it easier for the auger to attach to the pipe. In terms of strength, the design will be practically no different from the factory one. To improve the performance of the machine, it is necessary to provide teeth for the auger blades. You can cut them with a grinder. The blades are then attached to the wings using M6 bolts. All bolts will need to be unscrewed; accordingly, the ends of their connections must be riveted.

    The finished rotor should have two duralumin blades based on steel 2 mm thick. Instead of steel, you can use stainless steel, which will be more durable.

    The blades are placed symmetrically, thanks to which they will be reliably protected from mechanical influences. After installation, the structure should look balanced and symmetrical. To connect the gearbox and transmission sprocket during engine improvement, it will be necessary to replace the gearbox drive sprocket with a 17-tooth design in a pitch of 12.7. It is placed on the cardan shaft at the end of the second bend. When working with a wheelbase, you need to take into account that it must have an axle with a pair of bearings; rollers or axles are placed on them. They are welded onto the ends of pipes.

    The wheels can be equipped with built-in bearings, in which case replacing or repairing them is much easier and faster. The axle and wheels are secured using M10 bolts.

    The final touch to assembling the machine is installing the snow guide. A sleeve is welded to the bucket; after assembly, the snow will come out through it. If the snowblower engine has a power of 7 Horse power or less, then during large snow drifts it may fail.

    The Ural chainsaw and other brands can also be used for homemade production others useful devices. For example:

    • lawnmowers;
    • sawmills;
    • water pump.

    The key requirement for a particular device that is planned to be manufactured is that it must be small-sized powerful engine. Armed simple tools from a home workshop, you can make useful devices to make household work easier - in particular, a tool for removing snow in winter.

    Devices for snow removal are quite in demand today. They may differ in their design and the way the work is performed. If you wish, you can make a snow blower with your own hands from a chainsaw; such a machine will do an excellent job of clearing paths.

    Design and operating principle

    To make a snow blower, you must first complete the diagrams of the components and make calculations. The frame and body are made from a used chainsaw. It must have a working motor, and the more powerful it is, the more productive the snow blower will be. In addition to the motor, the frame needs to be welded for the device. To make the unit move itself, it can be equipped with a drive and wheels can be installed. It would be better to make skis from below. Then the chainsaw snow blower can be pushed and it will go through the snow.

    The body is made from metal sheet. The auger scoops up snow using discs, crushes it, and then two blades push the mass through the sleeve through rotation. You can equip homemade snow blowers with a rotary attachment. Then they will function like a vacuum cleaner.

    The rotor is made of wings with welded blades. The nozzle is placed in the housing, and then attached to the back of the screw mechanism assembly. As the rotor rotates, it sucks in snow that comes from the auger. Then with air flow snow comes out through the sleeve. The driver regulates the snow release with a visor located on the sleeve. For ease of use, you can make a device that can be rotated.

    Preparation of tools and materials

    Materials and tools:

    • metal pipes;
    • bearings;
    • aluminum pipes;
    • Metal sheet;
    • chainsaw engine;
    • welding machine;
    • screwdriver

    Creating a Snow Blower Frame and Auger

    To make a snow blower from a chainsaw, you first need to make a frame and an auger. The operation of the entire structure depends on the strength of the frame, since other systems are welded to it. It is necessary to use pipes of the same width.

    Now the small garden equipment market offers a large number of snow blowers, as in the form attachments to walk-behind tractors, and in the form of a completely separate mechanism equipped with a power unit.

    If you take a good look at the design of any one, then there is nothing complicated there, which means you can make it yourself, having only necessary materials and tools. You will also need a power plant. Many craftsmen were able to adapt the engine from the Soviet Ural chainsaw as a propulsion device for a homemade cleaner.

    Advantages and disadvantages

    A couple positive points homemade snow blower made from a Ural chainsaw:

    • The cost of manufacturing such a unit will be several times cheaper than purchasing a factory model of a snow blower, even if you have to buy a used chainsaw;
    • The performance of a snow blower with a Ural chainsaw engine will not be much inferior to this indicator of the factory model;
    • Almost all other elements of the snow blower are made from scrap materials - sections of pipes, sheets and pieces of thin iron.

    The main disadvantage that a homemade snow blower based on a chainsaw has, and because of which it is inferior to factory models, and even then not all of them, is the lack of a mechanism that ensures the self-propelled movement of this snow blower; it has to be pushed in front of you, which is not particularly easy.

    But in general, homemade unit worthy of attention because it can significantly save money and make snow removal easier.

    Frame, power plant

    It is better to weld the frame from small diameter pipes. The sections of pipes that will be located longitudinally relative to the unit itself will also act as skids, with the help of which the snow blower will move through the snow. Therefore, it is better to cut the edges of these sections that will be in front at an angle, and weld the holes so that snow does not pack into the pipes.

    A frame is welded from two sections of pipes that will be located longitudinally and two sections that will be located transversely. Cross members in in this case are needed to mount the engine on them, so one should be located on the rear edge of the longitudinal sections, and the second cross member approximately 200 mm from the first.

    The distance between longitudinal sections should not exceed 700 mm. That is, the frame is shaped like the letter P, but with two cross members.

    The power plant is used from a Soviet chainsaw because it does not have much torque, but it has good traction. You won't need the entire chainsaw, so you need to remove the motor from the frame. Next, it needs to be redone a little. In place of the chainsaw chain drive sprocket, you need to install a small drive sprocket from the Voskhod, Minsk motorcycle. You can simply weld it to the chainsaw sprocket, having previously centered it.

    Auger, auger body, drive

    Let's move on to the working parts of the Ural snow blower, namely the auger. It is made from a piece of pipe of small diameter. You can also use any shafts up to 80-850 mm long. An important condition is the selection of bearings for the shaft. This length of the shaft is needed to provide its drive, which will be located outside the housing.

    Next, you need to cut 4 circles with an outer diameter of 300 mm from sheet metal 2-3 mm thick. Holes with a diameter of 220-230 mm are cut in these circles. Next, the existing disks are cut on one side and at the cut site the disk is stretched, forming something like a coil of a spring. This must be done with all 4 blanks.

    Then you need to calculate the center of the shaft, taking into account the section that will be used for the drive. In the center of the shaft, two plates 130 mm long and 150 mm wide will need to be welded to it. They should be parallel to each other. These plates will serve as blades for throwing snow.

    The prepared screw bands are welded on one side to the blades, on the other side spacers are attached to the shaft, to which the other ends of the bands are welded. The ribbons need to be positioned so that their turns move toward the center. That is, on both sides of the blades there should be two tapes installed in parallel and with their turns directed towards the center. Moreover, this entire structure should not exceed 700 mm in length; the rest of the shaft will go under the drive.

    Photo of the auger mechanism of a homemade snow blower

    Let's move on to the body. It is made from round sidewalls, which in diameter should exceed the auger by about 50-70 mm. Next, a sheet of metal 1-1.5 mm thick is taken. It bends along the circumference of the sidewalls and is welded to them, forming a semicircle. Holes are made in the center of the sides into which the finished auger is inserted. WITH outside sidewalls, bearings are put on the shaft, pressed against the sidewalls and secured, while the position of the shaft is centered. To secure the bearings to the sidewalls, you can make races, or simply weld them to the sidewalls with external races, but then the structure will not be dismountable.

    Next you need to make a snow drain. You can make it from a segment aluminum pipe with a diameter of 150 mm and a length of 100 mm, as well as pieces of sheet metal from which a box will need to be formed. The pipe section will be the basis of the snow guide. To install it, a hole of the required diameter is made in the auger body, located so that it is slightly behind the auger blades. Insert a piece of pipe into the hole and secure it in it bolted connection, and the prepared box is attached to the pipe.

    The driven rear sprocket from the specified motorcycles is put on the section of the shaft allocated for the drive and secured to it by welding.

    All that remains is to put the structure together. The housing together with the auger is placed on the longitudinal elements of the frame and welded into it. The power unit is attached to the crossbars, but in such a way that the driving and driven sprockets are located in the same plane. A motorcycle chain will be used for drive. Its tension can be realized in two ways: tension by moving the power plant, but for this it is necessary to ensure the possibility of longitudinal movement of the motor with the possibility of fixing it at any point. It is also possible to implement a tension sprocket with bolted to the auger body.

    All that remains is to attach a control handle made from pipes to the frame, and bring the engine throttle control to the handle.

    Before a test run of the snow blower, you need to check all connections and make sure that the auger rotates easily and does not cling to the body elements.
    Video review of a homemade snow blower using a Ural chainsaw:

    6339 10/08/2019 5 min.

    Small-sized snow blowers that allow you to automate the labor-intensive process of clearing snow are in great demand. But what to do if you simply don’t have the funds to buy a snow blower?

    The only way out is the design of a homemade snow blower from what can be found in almost every thrifty owner’s garage. Eg, chainsaw, which is available to many people, especially in rural areas.

    Principle of operation

    The design of a factory snow blower is quite simple. Basic driving force is the motor, the power of which will determine the quality of snow removal, throw distance, etc.

    In addition to the engine, The snow blower device includes:

    • A housing made of metal or plastic that protects working units from foreign environments.
    • A screw mechanism consisting of a shaft and screw parts.
    • An outlet pipe through which snow is thrown out.
    • If the system is two-stage, then in addition to the auger, an impeller (rotary mechanism) is also used, which throws snow into the outlet pipe.
    • Basic control systems, handles, clutch, etc.
    • Depending on the configuration, a wheelbase, tracks or skis may be present.

    The operating principle of a homemade snow blower will be no different from the store-bought version. It also comes with the auger will enter, which is directed with screws to the center of the shaft. It directs the snow cover to the blade, which transfers the mass further to the outlet pipe.

    If the design includes a rotor, then the incoming snow from the blade falls first on it. It performs additional processing of the snow mass, after which it is sent into the pipe.

    Then the snow is thrown out to a certain distance (up to 12 meters).

    Manufactured homemade a chainsaw snow blower has its advantages:

    • By making your own snow blower, you can save a lot of money that you would otherwise have spent on purchasing a new snow blower. At the same time, even if you have to buy the chainsaw itself (see which chainsaws are good), you will still remain in the black.
    • A snowplow made with your own hands from a Druzhba chainsaw or other models will have similar performance as purchased counterparts.
    • The remaining parts of the body, the screw mechanism and other structural components are made from readily available materials, such as metal pipes, iron sheets, etc. This is again about saving.

    More full information you will find in the video below:

    The only drawback will be the fact that a homemade snowblower made from a chainsaw it will not be possible to install the mechanism responsible for the self-propelled structure. But if you provide a kind of sled or skis at the bottom of the unit, then this task will not be so difficult.

    The chainsaw snow blower has other features:

    • Almost any pipe can be used as an outlet pipe. plastic pipe, the diameter of which will be at least 16 cm.
    • The control handle can be made independently, from any metal tube.
    • The width of the bucket will depend on the power of the chainsaw engine. If it is powerful enough, the width of the bucket can be increased.

    Due to the fact that a homemade snow blower made with your own hands from a chainsaw is not self-propelled, it is better provide a kind of skid for better movement of the unit on the snow cover. You can use regular wooden blocks, corresponding to the frame length.

    You can attach a plastic base to them, which will improve the running performance of the snow blower.

    You can select some tips, helping in the operation of the unit:

    • To foreign objects do not fall into a running engine, special safety bolts can be installed to eliminate this threat.
    • After starting the unit for the first time, you need to check all connections of the snow blower. If required, tighten all nuts fully.
    • Give preference to closed type bearings so that snow mass did not get inside the case.
    • Do not try to remove heavily compacted snow. Do preliminary preparation coating using hand tools.

    Conclusion

    Constructing a homemade snowblower from an existing chainsaw is a fairly optimal way out of a situation where there is not enough Money to buy a snow blower in a store.

    Taking into account the fact that the cost of even the cheapest unit can be at least 15 thousand rubles, this issue becomes quite acute. (read about choosing a gasoline snow blower)

    Another good thing about using a chainsaw engine is that its power is enough to remove fairly large volumes of snow. At the same time, the power of a homemade snow blower is almost identical to that available from store-bought models (see Lynx snow blower).
