Well, is the triumvirate assembled? Now we can buy not only the family crossover XC90 (it can also be a seven-seater, remember?) or the business sedan S90, but also Volvo, which can become the golden mean of the model line - the “off-road” station wagon V90 Cross Country. The trio are related not only by the number in the index and the general style, but also by the new SPA (Scalable Product Architecture) platform. How is it in folklore? The eldest was a smart guy, the middle one was this way and that... No, this will not work - if only because it is not clear who is the eldest and who is the youngest. Three Musketeers? It's closer. After all, Volvo, like Dumas, actually has four of them - there is also a “regular” V90 station wagon. At home, he will most likely be d’Artagnan - Scandinavians love such cars more than others. But they don’t sell V90 here and never will: in Russia the demand for it is scanty. But Cross Country has every chance. Its predecessor, the Volvo XC70, was a leader in its class, considered a model of reliability and was popular until the last days of production.

Following the V90, the off-road Cross Country came out beautiful - just look at that silhouette! For the sake of a fast profile with a long hood, a low roof and a sloping rear door, the Swedes even stepped on the throat of their own song, sacrificing practicality - the car’s trunk volume is not a record, even the predecessor XC70 had more.

In short, here's some free advice for dealers: to make your car sell better, place it in the showroom - like in our title photo - sideways. And preferably on the podium, the big wheels, off-road body kit and 210 mm Swedish ground clearance will catch the buyer’s eye. This is much more than that of German competitors. Moreover, Volvo did not limit itself to installing long springs - the station wagon’s suspension was radically reconfigured, and most of its elements in the Cross Country are original. Although the basic design of the SPA platform has been preserved: at the front there are double wishbones with springs, at the rear there is a multi-link with a transverse composite spring, which can be replaced by pneumatic elements for an additional fee.

With such ground clearance, the V90 Cross Country is already a real competitor not only to other “off-road station wagons,” but also to many crossovers. Volvo will lose to them only on slopes - because of the long wheelbase and large rear overhang. Although who can climb a mountain with a crossover? And for everything else, the Swedish station wagon has large wheels, all-wheel drive as standard and an Off-Road mode in the power unit settings. As in the XC90, it makes it much easier to dose the turbo engine's thrust without getting stuck in mud or snow.

But the Volvo V90 Cross Country has a lot of advantages over “jeeps”. Here you have a large trunk and a “car interior” with a more comfortable seating position. And most importantly, the feeling of driving a Volvo V90 Cross Country is more car than crossover. The dimensions, despite the strong inclination of the pillars and the narrow rear window, feel better, roll in corners and bumpiness on the waves of asphalt are perceived more easily by the body, and in general the car is somehow easier to control. Just don’t rush to attribute the epithet “hot” to the V90 Cross Country, despite the 320 horsepower under the hood. Of course, they will even carry an 1800-kilogram station wagon out of the traffic light first. And the brakes here allow more than on a tall, nodding crossover. However, the car's chassis is not sporty. On a straight line it is very stable and responsive, but in corners the Cross Country is lazy - noticeable understeer is built into the settings. As, indeed, befits a family or business car...

Audi A6 Allroad
Also fast and beautiful, but more expensive and less off-road

Where the Volvo V90 Cross Country falls a little short of the big XC90 is in comfort. That one has pneumatics “all around”, but here it’s only at the rear - and the station wagon transmits road trifles into the cabin in more detail. They say that they simply couldn’t fit the air springs under the low hood. But Mercedes did it - and its All-Terrain “off-road station wagon” is more comfortable.

But Volvo will take it differently - at a price. Both Mercedes and Audi A6 Allroad are more expensive than even the top-end Cross Country T6! But there are Volvos that are cheaper, but no worse - for example, with the D5 diesel engine. Like the golden mean of the V90 itself.

Good, oh how good the new Volvo design style is! The former angular simplicity is a thing of the past. Now the flagship Swedish station wagons sport fast, aerodynamically adjusted body contours. The whalebone radiator grille is concave, which evokes associations with Maserati cars. But the L-shaped taillights are unlike anything else. Thanks to them, it is impossible to confuse it with any station wagon of another brand. The phrase Cross Country in the name implies the presence of a protective body kit, all-wheel drive, increased ground clearance and a more durable suspension.

It’s interesting that the “ninetieth” easily and naturally deceives even the most accurate eye. In appearance, it seems smaller than its ideological predecessor, the XC70, but in reality this is not the case. The length of the new car is almost five meters. The main competitors (primarily the Audi A6 Allroad and) are more compact.

The solid dimensions gave confidence that Volvo would outperform its rivals in terms of trunk volume. Not so! The capacity of the luggage compartment up to the shelf is 656 liters (according to our measurements, even less), and with the second row of seats folded - 1526 liters. The trunks of the “Germans” are more spacious. Even the predecessor XC70 showed a more respectable result - 1600 liters. But in terms of ease of use, the V90 has made a big step forward. Firstly, its fifth door rises (using an electric drive, of course) noticeably higher. Secondly, the trunk has a double bottom - the intermediate part is convenient for storing various small items.

But where the increase in size is noticeable is on the second row of seats. In the seventieth series station wagon, the gallery was a bit cramped - there was especially a lack of space for feet. The V90 has no such problems - there is more than enough space in all directions. And what a service! Passengers are provided with heated seats, their own climate control unit (no one else has a four-zone climate in this segment), and additional air ducts. Honestly, it’s not a sin to drive such a car with a hired driver.

Still, I like driving better. Compared to previous Volvos, there is, of course, a leap of progress here. The materials are richer, the assembly is better, and we don’t even need to mention the modernist design with a vertically oriented 9-inch “tablet” on the center console. The backlog in terms of modern equipment has also been eliminated. The V90 features liquid crystal instruments, data projection onto the windshield, adaptive cruise control, and a lane keeping system. But at the top of this list I would put the divine Bowers & Wilkins audio system. I have never heard better sound in a car.

Like all cars built on the V90, it is equipped exclusively with four-cylinder turbo engines with a displacement of 2.0 liters. Our T6 version is the flagship version. Its special feature is a dual supercharging system: the drive compressor operates at low speeds, and then the turbine comes into play. Thanks to this design, a solid supply of traction is always felt under the right pedal. Press down a little harder, and the car is already speeding - just have time to slow down.

True, I was disappointed by the high fuel consumption. The engine consumed an average of 14 liters of gasoline per 100 km - almost twice the declared figure. Of course, it is naive to expect a modest appetite from 320 horses, but then there is no need to get your hopes up with unrealistic performance characteristics.

The eight-speed automatic transmission impresses with its quick and timely shifts. Next to the selector there is a toggle switch for starting the engine. To the left of the steering wheel is a small drawer. I have no idea what could be put in there. The new station wagon handles much more interestingly. There is no longer the former detachment in him - reactions to steering wheel actions are quick and unambiguous. And the rolls have become smaller. In front, instead of a simple MacPherson strut, there is a double-wishbone suspension, and in the rear there are air struts, which were not available to its predecessor. These measures not only improved handling, but also raised the smoothness of the ride to previously unattainable heights. In areas where the 70 would shake convulsively, the V90 rolls along with amazing equanimity and comfort. In addition, the suspension works noticeably quieter - it handles potholes almost silently.

In short, in almost all aspects the V90 Cross Country left an extremely pleasant impression. But I would be careful not to call it a super offer. This station wagon is too expensive. It is clear that the most powerful modification with the flagship engine should be the most expensive in the line, but not five million! That's how much the test car costs. Therefore, if so, then in the basic version for three million. Yes, it will have a weaker engine and simpler equipment (in fact, it has everything you need), but the price is more reasonable. I bet that most Russian buyers will do so.

The Volvo V90 Cross Country debuted in the domestic market in mid-September 2016. The station wagon is built on the basis of the regular V90 and is intended to replace the XC70 in the Swedish automaker's lineup. It will not be difficult to distinguish the new product from a standard car; off-road elements are striking: the ground clearance has been increased by 65 millimeters, so that the station wagon feels comfortable not only on asphalt city streets, but also on treacherous off-road conditions, as well as linings made of black unpainted plastic on the sills, bumpers and wheel arches. They are designed to protect the paintwork of body panels from sand and rubble flying from under the wheels if the driver decides to use a dirt road. Otherwise, the appearance is made in the current Volvo corporate style. Its distinctive features are stylish elongated headlights with LED running light sections in the shape of the letter T, called "Thor's Hammer". Also worth noting is the elegant concave radiator grille with thin chrome-plated vertically oriented fins and a large manufacturer logo in the middle.

Dimensions of Volvo V90 Cross Country

The Volvo V90 Cross Country is an all-terrain station wagon, its overall dimensions are: length 4936 mm, width 1879 mm, height 1543 mm, wheelbase 2941 mm, and ground clearance will be 218 mm. This is a pretty solid figure, especially considering that the car is not an SUV or crossover. Coupled with such ground clearance, an all-wheel drive system and an off-road gearbox mode, the station wagon will perform excellently wherever you go and will not lose face even on treacherous off-road conditions.

The trunk of the Volvo V90 Cross Country can also only please you; with the backrests of the second row of seats raised, you will have as much as 913 liters of free space at your disposal. This is a truly impressive figure; it will be appreciated by fans of active recreation or trips to the country with family and plenty of luggage. If, by a whim of fate, the owner of a station wagon has to transport something larger, he can always fold down the backs of the second row of seats, then he will have 1526 liters of usable space with a perfectly flat floor at his disposal. This is an impressive volume that can be compared to small commercial vans.

Engine and transmission Volvo V90 Cross Country

The Volvo V90 Cross Country is equipped with a rich range of powertrains. The engines are quite versatile and are capable of revealing all aspects of this multi-faceted car; it will appeal to both lovers of quiet and economical driving, and fans of drive. The power units also have common features. Firstly, they all have the same layout - four cylinders standing in a row. The total volume of the combustion chambers is two liters, this is a good indicator; it is also worth considering that all engines have a turbocharging system, which allows them to develop good power. And secondly, the engines are paired with an all-wheel drive system, implemented using a BorgWarner clutch, and an eight-speed automatic variable transmission.

  • The base engine of the Volvo V90 Cross Country is indexed T5 and is capable of developing 249 horsepower and 350 Nm of torque. Thanks to good power, the car will exhibit good dynamic characteristics and will appeal to fans of active driving. It is worth noting that for cars supplied to Russia, engine power was deliberately reduced. This was done in order to reduce taxation for the owner of the station wagon.
  • The Volvo V90 Cross Country also has heavy fuel engines, the simplest of which is designated D4 and is capable of developing 190 horsepower and 400 Nm of torque. Diesel power units have always been famous for their good torque at low crankshaft speeds and low fuel consumption compared to their gasoline counterparts. This engine is no exception; the manufacturer claims that the consumption of a Volvo V90 Cross Country equipped with this engine will be only 5.2 liters of diesel fuel per hundred kilometers in the combined driving cycle. The motor will appeal to lovers of quiet, economical, and most importantly, safe driving.
  • The Volvo V90 Cross Country also has a more powerful diesel engine. It bears the D5 index and develops 235 horsepower and 480 Nm of torque. This is the most high-torque engine in the line, and will be appreciated by people who use a trailer or often find themselves in rough terrain. Solid torque will make towing easy and effortless, and will also help you overcome treacherous off-road conditions.
  • The top-end power unit of the Volvo V90 Cross Country is the T6, capable of developing 320 horsepower and 400 Nm of torque. Thanks to the solid herd under the hood of the station wagon, whose dry weight is 1920 kilograms, it is capable of accelerating to a speed of one hundred kilometers per hour in just 6.3 seconds. Amazing agility for such a heavy all-wheel drive vehicle with a two-liter engine. The maximum speed, in turn, will be 240 kilometers per hour, which is also impressive. Fans of drive and vivid emotions behind the wheel will appreciate this power unit.

Equipment

The Volvo V90 Cross Country has a rich technical content; inside you will find a lot of useful devices and clever systems designed to make your trip comfortable, interesting, and most importantly, safe. Thus, the car is equipped with: leather interior, electric seats, memory settings, heating, ventilation and massage function, 12.3-inch color screen instead of the classic dashboard, Sensus Connect multimedia system with 9.5-inch color touch screen, audio system premium class, full power accessories, light and rain sensors, a rear view camera, a lane control system and road sign reading, as well as a camera that recognizes pedestrians and a system that prevents frontal collisions.

Bottom line

The Volvo V90 Cross Country keeps up with the times; the station wagon has a modern and stylish design that will perfectly highlight your individuality and character. Such a car will not merge with the gray everyday flow and will not get lost in the large parking lot of a shopping center. The salon is a realm of high-quality finishing materials and comfort. Even a long trip will not cause the slightest discomfort. It is also worth noting the excellent ergonomics; the developers have tried to ensure that all the necessary elements are at your fingertips, and the controls are intuitive and have a polished character. The manufacturer understands perfectly well that a car is not a high-tech toy, which is why under the hood of the station wagon there is a modern and powerful engine, which is a fusion of innovative technologies and many years of experience in the field of engine building. The Volvo V90 Cross Country will serve you for many kilometers and give you an unforgettable driving experience.
