The calculator itself is located a little lower, if you are not interested in the theoretical part, you can. Tiling a bathroom is becoming almost the only acceptable way of tiling the surfaces of sanitary facilities.

In this regard, it is important to know how to calculate tiles for a bathroom using a calculator specially developed for this purpose by our programmers.

This calculation will allow you to purchase materials in the right amount to optimize your expenses.

Similar wall cladding in a room with a bathroom can be laid with the most different ways, the choice of which depends on many factors, including the design of the material, its size and texture.

Of course, one of the decisive factors is the readiness of the performer and his professional training.

Calculate bathroom tiles - calculator

How to calculate correctly with an online calculator - preliminary considerations

The program provides for calculating the need for tiles when laying them in a standard way, that is, in rows parallel to the floor, horizontal arrangement decorative insert(decorum). Despite the large number of dimensions marked on bathroom diagrams, you should keep in mind that not all of them are required to be filled out.

For example, if there is only one window in the bathroom, you do not need to fill in dimensions L3 and L4 or L9 and L10; if there are no windows at all, then the dimensions L1 and l2 are also not filled. If the lengths of walls 1 and 3 (scheme 1) and, respectively, 2 and 4 (scheme 2) are the same, then dimension Lb1 is not filled. If the long walls are unequal, the size of one of the short sides is calculated by the program. Decorative tiles should be laid after a full (not cut) row of the main tile.

“Distance to decor” means the size from the floor to the top edge of the decorative insert, taking into account the number and width of the seams between the tiles. If there is no decor, all dimensions related to it are not entered! If you need to tile sections of the walls behind the bathroom, you should indicate this by clicking on the square button with the corresponding question (under the diagram); a checkmark will appear on the button; You can remove it by clicking again.

THUS, the dimensions Lh, Lb2, Lb3, L5, L6, L8, the dimensions of the bathtub and tiles, and the width of the joint between the tiles are required to be filled in. Size L7 is indicated if the tile will run under the door trim. Size Lb3 may be longer than the length of the bath. The room height (Lh) must take into account the baseboard.

The calculation is carried out taking into account that the tiles are laid from bottom to top, from left to right.

Diagonal method of tiling a bathroom

Using this method, you can stick cladding of any size - both square and rectangular. Great importance when performing work in this way, the performer has professional training and qualifications.

Tiling a bathroom diagonally has a number of advantages and some disadvantages. TO positive aspects The following can be included:

  1. The rotated position of the plates in relation to each other visually separates the intersecting planes, creating the illusion of a wider space than it actually is. This is important when finishing a small room.
  2. The combination of shades, patterns, drawings on the plates makes it possible to create original design premises.
  3. When installed diagonally in the bathroom, the difference in the size of the wall being finished is partially hidden, which is facilitated by the inclined position of the lines.

However, there are also some negative points:

  1. Labor intensity and complexity of installation due to large quantity cutting operations. Complex marking, cutting and placement individual parts with an inclination require the master to have some experience in performing such work.
  2. When cutting parts diagonally, the corners often chip off, which requires additional refinement of the break with a file.

Preparatory work on surfaces

Before starting work on laying cladding in a room with a bathroom, it is necessary to assess the condition of the surfaces to be finished:

  1. First of all, they check geometric dimensions walls Each surface must be strictly rectangular; if this condition is not met, the walls must be leveled, even before installing drywall.

  1. Potholes and uneven surfaces on the walls also need to be leveled. Irregularities up to three millimeters deep can be leveled tile adhesive during the installation process. Deviations from flatness up to seven millimeters deep are best straightened using putty.
  2. Irregularities with a depth of ten millimeters or more must be eliminated by covering the walls with waterproof plasterboard.

It should be noted that leveling the walls is mandatory before using any finishing installation methods in the bathroom.

And one more general wish regarding surface preparation. Before tiling begins, they must be primed with tile adhesive diluted in a ratio of 1:3. However, this action must be carried out in accordance with the instructions - use tile adhesive, for different compositions requirement may vary.

Diagonal installation of decoration on walls

It is no coincidence that we suggest starting with wall decoration. If the floor finish is laid first during renovation, the rest of the work will have to be done while moving on the new coating, which can lead to damage.

The cost of covering walls with ceramics is not cheap. How to calculate the number of tiles in the bathroom to avoid unnecessary costs? Diagonal placement involves its arrangement as a continuous canvas with cutting out the smallest fragments.

Therefore, this method, despite its high labor intensity, is considered the most economical. Only parts damaged during cutting end up in waste. Therefore, to calculate the coverage for a room with a bathroom, it is enough to calculate the total area of the walls, and, just in case, add about 5% for damage and defects.

The cladding in the bathroom should start from the wall opposite front door. When laying diagonally, you need to start from vertical axis. Laying is done from the starting part in both directions evenly with the installation of spacer crosses along the seams.

They are inserted between the plates, two pieces per side. The thickness of the cross foot is 1.5 millimeters.

The laying technology is as follows:

  1. A portion of glue sufficient to install 2-3 plates is applied to the prepared wall surface. The glue is leveled on the wall with a notched trowel; its width should be equal, or better if more format details. The ridge lines on the adhesive layer should not intersect with each other, since an air bubble may form in this place.

  1. The tile is placed on the glue and pressed tightly against it. The starting plate must be carefully aligned on the plane: it must be installed at the same distance from the wall along the perimeter. The corners of a part installed diagonally should be placed strictly on the axial vertical line marked earlier.
  2. If the plate is skewed, alignment must be done by pressing on it. As a last resort, you can calm it down by carefully tapping it with the striker rubber mallet.
  3. The next elements are installed triangular fragments from tiles cut in half diagonally. Plastic crosses are installed in the gap between the plates - two pieces per side. The coincidence of the plane of each subsequent part is controlled by a short bubble level, and the overall flatness is long construction.

  1. The upper end of the cladding is formed entirely by cut fragments, so it must be finished with cornice elements. You can select cornices according to size and shape at construction market.
  2. A critical operation - cutting a plate - is carried out on special device– tile cutter. You can, of course, use a glass cutter, but it is much more difficult to get required quality cutting.

Diagonal laying of the coating in the bathroom allows you to obtain the most decoratively perfect compositions.

Lay out in a checkerboard pattern

With this method of placing tiles, the seams between the individual plates are located parallel to the intersections of the walls. This method involves cutting the plates to the size of the remaining gap.

This is not economical, especially if they are decorated with an asymmetrical pattern and the remains have to be thrown away. That's why checkerboard laying used for tiles of small diameter and different colors, which allows you to create original compositions.

But before you use online calculator, you need to take all the measurements of the room and get a clear idea for yourself about the design of your bathroom.

How to use the online tile calculator?

This program is presented in the form of a table, into which you need to enter data on your bath for calculation:

  1. Geometric parameters premises - length, width of the room and finishing height.
  2. Doorway dimensions.
  3. Window opening dimensions.
  4. Dimensional parameters of the bath.
  5. Side walls bathtubs - tile? - "Not really".
  6. Selecting a layout type. There are several options: classic, plain - involves the use of tiles of the same color, combined - uses several colors.

Data on the parameters of the bathroom such as the height of the walls, etc. are entered in meters.

The dimensions of the openings for the door and window are subtracted from the total area to be finished.

Dimensions of the bathtub - it is necessary to indicate whether its sides and the floor under the bathtub are subject to finishing.

Layout options:

  • classic way provides for finishing the room with material of several colors, separated using a border;
  • with a monochromatic finish, the use of decorated inserts is provided;
  • in the combined version, the finishing involves the use of plates of three or more colors.

Thus, the built-in calculator provides a wide range of possibilities for realizing your design ideas.

The size of the plates must be indicated in millimeter units. Decorated plates are counted individually.

To calculate the need for materials for curbs, their location along the entire coverage along the generatrix is taken into account horizontal laying, as well as throughout the vertical.

It is also necessary to indicate the reserve of the main material - usually the value is 5-10% of the total quantity.

Laying with offset

This method is used quite often, including in combination with those described above. This method does not bring anything fundamentally new to installation technology.

The calculation of the need for materials remains the same - according to the covered area. This installation method is reminiscent of brickwork and is most applicable when working with rectangular monochromatic tiles.

But the method using mosaic inserts provides an undoubted advantage.

The effect of offset lines makes it possible to make styling defects less noticeable.

Final work

Finishing operations do not depend on the installation method. In any case, you will need to seal the seams between the tiles. For this purpose it is produced special material– grout.

It is usually sold ready-made, packaged in jars. Each manufacturer recommends a certain grade of this material and these tips should be followed.

The grout is applied to the joint space using an elastic rubber spatula. Having collected a little mass on the tip of this tool, you need to rub it into the crack in the transverse direction.

When the gap is evenly filled to its full depth, clean the spatula and use a longitudinal movement to free the surface of the tile from grout residues. Afterwards, you can use a damp sponge and completely clean the surface.

How to take into account door and window openings

In built-in calculators, this calculation operation is embedded in a program that will automatically and correctly calculate the number of tiles that would be placed in these places.

But if the calculation is made independently, it is enough to take into account the total area of free openings and divide it by the area of one tile. The result obtained in pieces of plates must be subtracted from the amount of materials to cover the total area.

In this case, there is no need to take into account the installation method - remember that about 5% of the reserve is always included in the calculation. It will serve as a compensating factor for the error in the calculation.

Calculate the need for plastic corners

When working, two crosses are installed on each side of the tile. In this case, each pair works on two tiles. The simplest calculation: divide the number of tiles by two and get the required number of inserts.

We multiply the result by 15-20%, since this little thing tends to get lost as work progresses. The costs for them are so minuscule in comparison with the others that it would not be worth talking about them.

Calculate glue and grout requirements

The issue of the need for grout for bathroom tiles can be considered purely theoretically. After all, its quantity is as insignificant as the spacer crosses.

The consumption rate of this material is indicated on the packaging, and you can use these data as a guide when purchasing.

Another thing is tile adhesive. It can be sold as a dry mixture in bags and bags, or ready-made in plastic buckets. Naturally, the consumption rate per square meter is available on the packaging. But this is an average.

The actual consumption may be slightly different, depending on the quality of the surface being covered. If there are multiple places where the tiles have to be leveled due to the thickness of the adhesive layer, the consumption of binder for its installation will be significantly increased.

Any calculation using a calculator is preliminary, as it cannot take into account all the features of your premises. For a more accurate calculation, please contact our managers when placing an order.

1. Dimensions of the room - you must indicate the dimensions of the room in meters.

2. Door size - the area of this area will be subtracted from the total area.

3. Dimensions of the bathtub - you need to indicate the need to lay tiles on the sides of the bathtub and under the bathtub.

4. Layout type - there are options from three types of layout (classic, single-volume and combined).

In the case of a classic layout, the cladding is divided into two parts, which are separated by a border. Wherein Bottom part It has dark colors tiles, top - light colors.

A single-color cladding option assumes that all tiles are laid in the same color with the addition of decorative elements.

For a combined tile layout, several colors are used, usually three.

5. Tile dimensions must be indicated in millimeters.

7. For borders, the number of rows must be indicated. The row is located along the entire perimeter with horizontal cladding, and from floor to ceiling with vertical cladding.

8. At the very end, you need to indicate the supply of tiles you need. The recommended margin is at least 5% (for trimming, accidental chips during trimming).

Sometimes it is very difficult to imagine what your bathroom will look like after renovation. Many people, due to their way of thinking, are not able to see a tile and imagine how it will look in the room. Of course, you can look at the interior options offered by the manufacturer's designers and do one-on-one... But this option is often not suitable, since the premises are designer interiors rarely coincide in size and shape with real, standard bathrooms.

How to understand whether this or that tile will suit you or not? Option one is to arrange a meeting with the designer in one of the stores. Using specialized programs, a virtual tile layout will be created according to your dimensions. Of the minuses - you will have to buy tiles in this store, you will spend a lot of time with the designer, because... people rarely understand each other from the first word. With what more options tiles you are considering - the more time you will spend.

The second option is to learn how to work with tile layout programs. Unfortunately, the programs are entirely paid, and learning them can take a lot of time.

The third option is to use our service to lay out the tiles yourself. It is absolutely free, it allows you not only to visualize color combinations tiles, but also calculate in detail required amount, taking into account savings on tile cutting. We will tell you how to lay out tiles in this service on this page.

To create a layout you will need:

  • Dimensions of all walls in the room
  • Doorway size. If the door is installed, then to the width door leaf you need to add 10cm to the height of 5cm.
  • Bath size. The length is usually equal to the length of the wall to which the bathtub is adjacent. Width and height are also needed. The height of the bathtub is usually adjusted with legs, so you need to decide on the desired height.
  • Tile collection.

Start creating a layout

Go to the page of the collection whose layout you want to create. Find the “Create Layout” button on the page and click it. The tile layout creation program will launch.

Appearance

At the top there are tabs on which control and settings buttons are grouped.

Room parameters

On the Room Settings tab, click the button. A dialog box will open allowing you to enter room size settings. Please note that changing these settings will reset all entered data. Therefore, you need to enter them at the very beginning of working with the layout service. When entering room dimensions in work area The walls of the room will be displayed in accordance with the entered dimensions. After setting the dimensions, use the zoom buttons to increase or decrease the scale of the layout to fit the screen size to comfortably continue working with the layout.

Installing objects

On the "Objects in the room" tab you can place a bathtub, sink, mirror, door in your room. When you click on the icons depicting an object, a dialog box will open for entering the dimensions and position of the object in the room. The input results will be displayed in the layout work area.

Tile laying grid, installation of borders, mosaics

On the "Tiles" tab, you can shift the tile layout grid, change the layout direction (vertically, horizontally), install borders and mosaics. The cell size of the layout grid is automatically calculated based on the size of the base tile.

  • Layout direction (vertical or horizontal)

    The tiles can be laid both “lying” and “standing”, if the design of the decorative elements and the size of the borders allow it. To change the direction of the layout, click with the mouse on the image of the wall on which you want to change the direction of the layout, and then click on the first button in the row with the image of two arrows. If the laying direction needs to be changed for all walls, then do this operation for each wall.

  • Grid shift, first tile size, end tile size, cropping control

    Beautiful tiling involves trimming the tiles evenly on the left and right sides, centering decorative elements, adjusting the seams to the height of the bathtub, and much more. You can do all this by activating the wall by clicking on its image, and then using the buttons with arrows (). The direction of the arrow indicates in which direction the layout grid will be shifted. The shift step is 1 cm.

  • Borders and mosaics

    Borders are narrow decorative elements usually installed to create a harmonious transition between tiles various colors, as well as for zoning the room. Installation of borders within one wall should be the entire length or height of the wall, otherwise the geometry of the tile layout will be shifted, which is extremely unsightly. Installation of borders is done by pressing the button with the image of two solid vertical (for vertical, ) or horizontal lines (). When you click the button, a dialog box opens in which you first select the number of the wall on which you want to install the border, then select the border from the list of available borders, and then use the up and down arrow buttons to move the row with the border higher or lower. When installing a mosaic (buttons and ), it is possible to set the width of the mosaic row.

Laying tiles

On the "Layout" tab, you install the tiles on your walls, edited in the previous steps. More information about the capabilities of this step and controls:

  • Changing the seam color

    To improve the visual perception of the display, you can change the color tile joint. To change, click on the "Seam Color" button and select the desired color in the dialog box that opens. Unfortunately, the grout color cannot be changed for individual rows or tiles. You will immediately see the resulting result in the work area.

  • Wall background color

    To improve the visual perception of the display, you can change the background color of the walls. For example, when the tile has a single color grey colour, it's hard to see places where you haven't installed tiles. By changing the background color to a darker or lighter one, you will immediately see empty areas of the layout. To change, click on the "Background Color" button and select the desired color in the dialog box that opens.

  • Selecting tiles for installation

    To select the tile you want to lay out, click on the "Select Tile" button. A dialog box will open in which the tile images will be located. For convenience, the tiles are divided into tabs with the names of tile types - Regular (basic, background) tiles, Decors - tiles with a pattern, and Panels - sets of tiles with a pattern, together forming a complete pattern or composition. The tile is selected by clicking on the image. The selected tile is displayed at the top of the service.

  • Rotate tiles 180 degrees

    In some cases, it is necessary to accurately indicate the direction of laying tiles with a pattern in order to beautifully join their pattern. To do this, there is an option to flip the tiles 180 degrees. At the top of the service there is a checkbox with the inscription “Flip” (a field for placing a checkmark/bird). With this option enabled, all installed tiles will be flipped 180 degrees relative to their image.

  • The process of installing tiles on walls

    Once you have selected a tile, simply move your mouse over the wall where you want to install the tile. IN in the right place click the mouse, the tile image will be installed in this place. To cancel the installation, click in this place again - the tile will be removed.

  • Reflection of calculations

    In addition to visually displaying the location of tiles on the walls, the service also calculates the number of tiles used. Moreover, if, depending on the browser settings, there is a possibility of slight distortion of the picture, then the calculations are entirely based on mathematical calculation coordinates of each object. You can view the calculations by clicking on the "Show calculations" button in the upper right corner. The results will be displayed in a summary table below the wall images. The table contains information on the number of whole tiles (C), cut vertically (Pv), horizontally (Pg), cut in two planes (Pvg), the area of actual laying, and the required quantity for laying.

    When calculating the required number of tiles, based on the optimal algorithm for the consumption of scraps, the number of whole tiles for laying is calculated (in other words, the laying of scraps without overspending is taken into account). If tiles are cut in two planes, the trimmings are considered unsuitable for use.

    You can independently check the correctness of the calculations by clicking the mouse in the calculation table in the cells with the number of required tiles - the tiles on the walls will be marked with a red fill. Clicking again will remove this fill.

Ask a question - get an answer!

When purchasing materials for repairs, you need to know exactly how much of a particular material is needed. If you buy more, you will waste money, but if you buy less, you will have to pause the repair to buy the required quantity. Some materials are produced in limited editions, and there is a chance that you simply won’t find the desired pattern or texture. Purchasing tiles is no exception: an accurate calculation will allow you to complete the work on time and without additional costs.

Peculiarities

Calculating the required number of tiled squares is not a simple process. It is necessary to carefully make all measurements and calculations, depending on the characteristics of the room, the laying method and the size of the tiles themselves. You should not count on the fact that you can always buy more tiles, because even different batches of the same type may differ in shade or texture.

To ensure that there are enough tiles to cover the entire surface, you should immediately purchase a little more, than it turned out according to the calculation, since in some areas of the room the tiles need to be joined and cut, adjusting the ornament.

When calculating, you need to take into account that there is no seam left between the floor tiles and the wall material so that unevenness is not visible.

What is important to consider when calculating?

To begin with, it is calculated total area surface on which tiles of the same type will be laid. If it is a floor or ceiling, you need to multiply the width by the length, but if it is walls, then you need to multiply their length by the height. Measurements are carried out using a regular tape measure, the data is recorded on a piece of paper. To prevent mistakes or identify curvature, you can take several measurements on different sections of the wall or floor. It is better to calculate the area in square meters, and then divide it by the area of one ceramic tiles, the dimensions of which are also converted to meters. Thus it will turn out minimal amount material without taking into account trimming, matching patterns or taking into account defects.

Laying tiles diagonally allows you to hide even significant defects in the floor and walls, however, when calculating installation in this way, it is necessary to include a larger percentage for trimmings and waste: 15-17%, depending on whether it is necessary to adjust the pattern on the tile. A particular option for diagonal placement of tiles is the herringbone pattern. There are two options for this installation: in one, the first tile is laid parallel to the walls and laid diagonally; in another, the first tile goes at an angle and the laying lies perpendicular to the walls.

In cases of installation paving slabs It is best to allow 10 percent for defects during transportation and installation. This tile is quite fragile and easily breaks into pieces. It is also much more difficult to calculate exact dimensions area of the driveway or path to the gazebo, because this is not square room, clearly limited by walls, and the object complex shape.

Simultaneously with calculating the amount of ceramics, you can also find out the required amount of grout for tile joints– fugues. You can calculate the approximate amount of fugue, like tiles, using special online calculators. You need to enter the already calculated data on the area, and the program itself will calculate everything, taking into account the percentage of defects. And you can use various calculation formulas, according to which average consumption fugue is 1.6 kg/m3. Manufacturers often write the average consumption of tile adhesive and grout directly on the packaging.

This calculation can also be used, but for this you will need to make it directly in the store.

How to calculate?

The easiest way to calculate the number of tiles is, of course, to use online calculators to calculate. However, even if you use such a program, it is necessary to correctly measure all the necessary quantities, and the Internet may not be at hand, so it is better to know and be able to use several types of calculations.

Standard counting

The most simple option finishing is normal square tiles the same color or with an incompatible pattern (for example, marble or wood). When laying such material, you can start working from any corner and do not have to select the position of each tile before applying the adhesive.

Such ceramics can be cut from all sides and any trimmings can be used.

  • Step 1. The length of the walls is measured and the total length of the perimeter is calculated. If the room has a complex shape, it is necessary to take into account all the projections and niches.
  • Step 2. The height is measured, all obtained values are rounded to the nearest centimeter.
  • Step 3. The area of windows and doors is subtracted from the resulting value, since these surfaces are not tiled. If tiles are to be laid on the ceiling, the ceiling area is calculated.
  • Step 4. If the decorative bathroom screen is also decorated with tiles, then its area also needs to be calculated. And if the bathtub is installed near a wall, then the surfaces that will not be visible after installation can, in order to save money, not be tiled.
  • Step 5. Set the percentage of defects and waste during installation. It will be enough to increase the resulting figure by 10 percent to take into account all the factors that may affect the consumption of material: the work of a beginner or a professional, the presence of pipes and thresholds, a checkerboard or diagonal layout.

Example: there is a room of the following dimensions:

  • 2 m – length of one wall;
  • 2.5 m – length of the second wall;
  • 2.8 m – ceiling height;
  • door 2 m high and 0.8 m wide;
  • window 0.8 m long and 0.8 m high.

Thus, the area of the floor and all four walls is: 2*2.5 + 2*2*2.8 + 2*2.5*2.8 = 30.2 m2.

The window area is 0.8 * 0.8 = 0.64 m2, and the door area is 2 * 0.8 = 1.6 m2.

Now the area of one door and one window is subtracted from the resulting number, which are 1.6 m2 and 0.64 m2, respectively: 30.2–1.6–0.64 = 27.96 m2. Decorative screen the bathroom will not be decorated with tiles, so its area is not needed. If we add another 10 percent to this number, we get a finished area of 30.76 m2.

The area of one square of medium-sized tiles (30x30 cm) is 0.09 m2. If you divide the resulting surface area by the area of one square, you get 342 whole tiles. And depending on how many tiles are in one package, the number of packages that will be needed for cladding the floor and walls is calculated. of this premises.

Customized according to pattern

If the bathroom uses tiles with a border insert, or tiles of different sizes and materials, then make a calculation in a simple way will not work. First, you also need to calculate the square footage of the walls and floors minus the area of windows and doors. Then it is necessary to lay out all the elements, alternating in rows from bottom to top, in one even column over the entire height of the finishing area.

We measure the width of the resulting column and divide the perimeter by the resulting value, thus obtaining the number of such columns in a complete installation. Next, we determine the total area of tiles of each type in such a column and multiply by the number of columns obtained in the previous step. And at the end we add 15 percent for defects and adjustment of the drawing. This method is not very accurate, because it does not take into account that at the locations of windows and doors, the columns will be incomplete and an unequal number will be excluded from them various types tiles

Another calculation option is more accurate. It is necessary to immediately calculate the entire area on which one type of material will be laid. The result obtained is divided by the area of one tile the right size and the result is the number of tiles that will cover this area.

For this option of calculating the number of tiles, it will be enough to take into account 10 percent for fit and defects.

Various product options

There are tiles of quite complex shapes in the form of flowers and various patterns. It is almost impossible to calculate the area of one such tile due to the combination of smooth lines with sharp corners and cutouts. Sometimes the manufacturer indicates on the packaging approximately how much area one such tile covers, but often such information is simply not available. In order not to purchase such tiles “by eye”, you should draw exact plan the room in which the installation will take place. Then carefully draw one such tile on the appropriate scale, after which you can draw the complete cladding according to the scheme that was originally chosen.

If only one color is used, then all that remains is to simply count the resulting number of elements. If several colors are used, then you will have to color the picture with the corresponding colors and count how many specific tiles of one color or another you will get. Then you need to add 10-15 percent for defects and adjustments.

This method is also used when using decor that differs in size from the main tile.

It is necessary to first apply decorative elements to the diagram, and then determine how many main tiles will fit at the intersection with them, and subtract them from the total volume.

A separate calculation complexity appears when using beveled tiles. Bevels are bevels located along the perimeter of the tile. Such products look more expressive and voluminous than ordinary flat squares. Bevels look especially good on tiles that have a smooth surface. mirror surface. A wall lined with such tiles will visually expand small room and evenly diffuse the light around the perimeter. The difficulty is that this type tiles cannot be cut so as not to spoil them appearance. The floor and corners of the room must be perfectly flat, and the size of the material must be selected so that only the entire number of required squares of tiles is obtained.

When counting tiles individually, it is necessary to count all cut tiles in the corners or along the walls as whole. Otherwise, there is an increased risk that the planned material will not be enough to cover the surface.

Before laying tiles, it is necessary to level the surface of the walls, floor and ceiling, if tiles will also be laid on it. For this purpose, various self-leveling mixtures and plaster solutions are used. First, all leveling work is carried out, all wet surfaces are dried, and only then the area is measured.

For more savings or creation original design In the bathroom, only the “wet area” can be tiled. In places where water is in constant contact with the walls and floor, tiles are laid, and the rest of the surface is treated with moisture-resistant paint or mounted plastic panels. In this case, for the calculation it is necessary to take only the area of this “wet zone”.

If the area of one square of tile is not yet known, you can simply calculate the surface area that will be tiled. Most often in stores, tiles are packaged in packs covering an area of 0.5 m2 or 1 m2, so it will not be difficult to calculate how many packages are needed.

Coating from tiles it was and remains best choice when it comes to bathroom decoration. After all, such properties of ceramics as strength, moisture resistance, and aesthetics are ideally suited to the operating conditions of a given room. But due to the fact that the cost of tiles is not the lowest, there is always the intention of finding out how to calculate the tiles for the bathroom. Nobody needs extra expenses for repairs, but there should be just enough material so that during the repair process you are not distracted by unnecessary troubles.

What is this article about?

Room measurements

To calculate the tiles for the bathroom, you need to take a ruler and measure the room. That is, measure the length of all sides of the walls. It is easier to measure an area represented by a rectangle or square. In the first situation, two sides are measured, in the other, one.

If there are various curved areas in the room, all parts are measured. The results are recorded and a scale plan is drawn up. He will help in compiling design project repair. On the plan you can indicate the installation locations of plumbing fixtures and furniture.

Basic calculation formulas

When calculating bathroom tiles, you should take into account basic formulas calculating the perimeter of a rectangle and its area.

The area is determined according to the formula:

and the perimeter is calculated as follows:

where the letters express the parameters:

  • S – area expressed in square meters;
  • P – room perimeter;
  • D – wall length;
  • L – width;
  • H – wall height.

The area of all walls is calculated as the total sum of the found areas of all walls. Having found this value, the areas of those surfaces that are not subject to cladding (door and window openings, the space behind the bathroom) are minus from it.

Please note: sometimes, for reasons of economy, they do not plan to tile the wall, which will be hidden behind the bathroom. When choosing this finishing option, the wall area is calculated by measuring the height from the side of the bathroom.

These formulas are the basis for calculating the amount of tiles for the bathroom. In addition, to determine the quantity facing material information such as:

  • laying diagram;
  • planned color scheme of finishing;
  • the need for adjustment to the pattern of elements;
  • presence/absence of decorative elements (borders, inserts) in addition to the main coating.

Example of volume by area calculations

To illustrate how to calculate the number of tiles in a bathroom, let's look at examples. Presumably, the volume of material must be calculated for a room with the correct rectangular dimensions, in which the following measurements were made and recorded:

  • shortened wall - 2.3 m;
  • long wall - 3.2 m;
  • wall height - 2.5 m.

The calculations will look like this:

The perimeter of the room with these measurements will be 11 meters = 2.3*2 + 3.2*2.

The area of the shortened wall is 5.75 m2 = 2.3 * 2.5.

Whereas the area of a long wall will be 8 m2 = 3.2*2.5.

The total area of the room will be 27.5 m2 = 5.75*2+8*2.

But the cladding area will be smaller. Since the area of the doorway will be removed from it. Which is 1.32 m2 = 0.6 * 2.2, where the width of the opening is 0.6 meters and its height is 2.2 m.

Then the area that needs to be tiled will be equal to 26.18 m2 = 27.5 - 1.32.

In this case, the floor area for cladding will be 7.36 m2.

Examples of calculations for floors

For example, choice flooring fell on the elements square shape with side lengths of 50 by 50 cm. Therefore, the area of each tile will be equal to 0.25 m2.

To determine how many tiles are needed for a bathroom floor, you should divide the floor area by the area of one element. If we take the data from the example above, then 7.36/0.25 = 30 tiles (rounded up).

Previously, we looked at how to calculate bathroom tiles of the same type. However, not many people use the same type of tile. Often the option of combining elements is used. In this situation, it remains to be seen how many tiles would have to be purchased different types. Specialized computer programs can come to the rescue with this.

Count flooring perhaps in a different way. That is, count not according to the floor area, but individually. To do this, you also need to know the length and width of the bathroom. If we use the data from the previous example, the sides of the room will be 230 cm, 320 cm. If the tiles have a side of 50 cm, then the width will require 230/50 = 4.6 elements (rounded to 5 whole pieces). This means that 5 tiles will fit in one row in width. Next, we calculate how many rows will be laid in length 320/50 = 6.4, round up to 7. Then multiply 5 pieces in one row by 7, we get 35 pieces. Don't forget to add a couple or three pieces in reserve. Therefore, we will inform the seller that we have purchased 38 pieces.

Now let’s compare the results obtained from the example, where calculations were carried out by floor area and the data where the quantity was calculated individually. The difference is 8 pieces. That is, so many would not be enough to cover the floor and they would have to be purchased in the future. The second calculation option is more accurate and it makes more sense to use a piece-by-piece calculation.

Wall covering quantity

To calculate the amount of tiles for the bathroom on the walls, it is best to perform calculations separately for each partition. 250 cm (wall height) must be divided by 33 (tile side in cm) = 7.57 (or exactly 8) pieces - in a row according to the height. 230 cm (wall width) divided by 33 (tile side in cm) = 6.97 (or 7) pieces will lie in a row according to the width. We multiply 8 with 7, we get 56 units with sides of 33 and 33 cm. Needed for a smaller wall. By analogy, the number of tile samples needed for finishing is calculated. larger side. Makes 80 tiles.

Accounting for door space

For example, the height of the door is 180 cm. Divide it by 33, we get 5.45. Round down, it comes out to 5 pieces in height. The door width is 75 cm, divide it by 33 cm (side of the element), we get 2.27. Rounding down, we get 2 elements in width. We multiply 5 by 2, we get 10 pieces. If we subtract them, for example, from 80, we get 70 elements.

Counting the tiles on the wall, where part of it is covered by the bathroom, is done in a similar way.

Example of calculations with decorative inserts

For calculations, consider materials with the following dimensions:

  • wall elements rectangular shape- dimensions 20 cm x 30;
  • pencils - 1.5 x 20 cm;
  • borders - 10 cm x 20 cm.

Let's count total number borders with pencils. Why divide the perimeter by the length of each fragment. We remove the width of the doorway from the perimeter value. With our data it will be like this: (11 - 0.75)/0.2 = 51.25. Round up to a higher value, we get 52.

Since the pencils are placed on each side of the border tile, its consumption will double, in other words, 104 pieces will be needed. Next, the area that the tile will occupy is calculated.

Please note: if a direct layout of elements is chosen, then 5% of the material should be added to the calculated number of tiles, and when choosing more complex layout patterns (for example, with a diagonal arrangement of elements), the calculated number of elements is increased by adding 15% of the material.

These examples are enough to do the calculations yourself. Knowing them, calculate the required number of tiles, taking into account doorways and inserts of decorative elements.
