3. Next, you need to take a cauldron or a durable saucepan with thick walls and a bottom. Place it on the stove, pour in the prepared milk and bring it to a boil. When you notice foam, start stirring thoroughly. At this time you can add fine salt. When the milk begins to rise, you can add the prepared cereal in a thin stream, stirring constantly. Add sugar and vanilla, cover and cook for thirty minutes. The fire level should be minimal.

4. Meanwhile, you can chop the strawberries for decoration. Such a berry can not only decorate the appearance of a dish, but also improve the taste. Cut the walnuts into small pieces.

5. After thirty minutes, you need to remove the cauldron from the stove. Open the lid and add a piece of delicious butter. You can add a drop of honey for taste if the child does not have allergies. Then place in a plate, garnish with small nuts and strawberry pieces. Your child will love the millet treat.

Indeed, unlike millet, millet contains gluten, but in minimal quantities. The gluten content in millet is so low that pediatricians do not consider its presence a sufficient reason to refuse the product in childhood.

Now let's move on to the second part of the question - at what age can children eat millet.

How to give millet to a 1 year old child?

Start with half a teaspoon of millet porridge, gradually increasing it to the norm that your baby needs according to his age.

Caution also doesn’t hurt: start offering your baby millet porridge after rice and corn grits. Do not insist under any circumstances if your baby refuses a new product. If there is a negative reaction from the child’s body, you should not give millet porridge.

With this ratio of cereals and liquid, millet secretes a mucous substance, which simplifies absorption and promotes comfortable digestion.

Baked apples and pears are usually added to liquid porridge for babies. But it’s better to give up sugar. It is better to add honey as a sweetener (if the child is not allergic to bee products).

Children at the age of three are prepared with crumbly millet. You can prepare sweet porridge with milk with the addition of dried apricots, prunes, raisins, etc. The vegetable option is no less useful - in this case, add carrots and green peas. How to select and store millet

In order not to burden the digestive tract, children under one year old should cook porridge from millet flour

The quality of porridge depends on the cereal chosen for it. When purchasing, it is better to follow these tips:

  1. It is advisable to buy millet in transparent bags that allow you to see the grains. Cereals sold by weight undergo oxidation under the influence of external factors and lose their beneficial properties.
  2. It is better to choose cereals made from whole grains rather than crushed ones, since dishes made from them are viscous and less tasty. Porridge made from whole grains, even ground into flour at home, will taste better.
  3. You definitely need to pay attention to the expiration date of the cereal. You should buy millet that was harvested no more than 6-9 months ago. Stale grains will taste bitter as a result of fat oxidation.

The color of the millet also matters. An indicator of the quality of cereals is the bright yellow color of the grains and their matte surface. Gray and beige shades appear as a result of fat oxidation. Porridge made from such cereals will be bitter, and the child will not eat it.

You should also not store millet for a long time at home. It is easy for moths to grow in it. It is better to keep it in a cloth bag (pre-boiled in a strong saline solution) or in a hermetically sealed container made of glass, earthenware or plastic.

Cereals should be stored in a cool and dry place. Prepared millet flour can be stored in a sterilized glass jar with a lid.

If bitterness appears in the finished dish, then the millet should be doused with boiling water (or heated in a frying pan, preventing the color from changing).

How and when to introduce it into a child’s diet

After a year, you need to take half a glass of millet flour per 200 ml of water and cook until tender. You can improve the taste by adding butter, berries and fruits.

Millet porridge with milk

For older children, it is prepared from whole grains:

  1. Well washed (until the water is clear) millet (1 cup) should be poured into a saucepan with water (400 ml).
  2. After boiling, remove the foam and reduce the heat.
  3. Cook while stirring until the water disappears.
  4. Boil 400 ml of milk and add it to the porridge.
  5. Add a little salt (if desired, you can sweeten the porridge with 2 tablespoons of sugar) and cook it while stirring until thickened over low heat.
  6. Add butter (25-30 g) to the porridge and remove from heat.

Instead, you can add it to the finished porridge if you are not allergic to it.

Puree soup with millet in vegetable broth

  1. Take 1 tbsp. l. washed millet, add water and cook until tender (possibly in a Turkish pot) over low heat.
  2. Place chopped vegetables (2-3 medium-sized, 1 medium-sized) into another saucepan, add water and cook until tender.
  3. Grind the vegetables and porridge in a blender until pureed.
  4. Add boiled milk (200 ml) to the resulting mass, bring to a boil, remove from heat.
  5. Add salt to taste; if desired, you can add dill and parsley.
  6. Add (15-20 g) before serving.

  2. Cut approximately 150-170 g of peeled pumpkin into small cubes.

Children will surely enjoy beautiful, healthy and tasty millet porridge with vegetables.

Millet can not only quickly satiate a child, but also provide him with nutrients - vitamins and microelements necessary for a growing body.

Millet porridge is a source of valuable vegetable protein and healthy vegetable fats for a child. It will provide children of any age with a supply of energy, improve digestion, and ensure the normal function of many organs and systems.

The product can cause possible harm only if the recommendations of specialists are not followed.

Nutritionist Lidia Ionova talks about the properties of millet porridge:

How is millet porridge beneficial for a 1 year old child? Millet is a product of processing millet grains using a special cleaning method. The beneficial properties of cereal have been known since ancient times, and this porridge was very popular in Rus'.

Millet is useful for the rapid growth of a child. Fluorine contained in the structure of grains has a beneficial effect on the growth and formation of the skeletal system. Silicon strengthens bones, and manganese ensures the functioning of metabolism. Millet also contains:

  • two types of fiber;
  • folic acid;
  • essential amino acids;
  • carbohydrates and vegetable fats.

Millet porridge can be given to improve the functions of the gastrointestinal tract; it normalizes microflora and accelerates intestinal motility. The ability to remove toxins and antibiotic residues from the body puts millet at the level of therapeutic and prophylactic nutrition.

A contraindication to feeding a baby millet is individual intolerance to cereals, which practically never occurs. Another contraindication may be a poorly formed infant digestive system. The question of whether it is possible to give your baby millet in this case will be decided by your pediatrician.

When to introduce complementary foods with millet

When can you give your child millet porridge?

From the age of 8-9 months, it is recommended to introduce complementary foods only from millet flour, and the flour should be of different degrees of grinding depending on the age of the baby. An eight-month-old child should cook porridge from the finest grains. The millet is washed, dried and ground in a coffee grinder. A portion of the finished flour can be stored in a sterilized jar with a lid.

When the baby turns one year old, you can feed porridge made from coarser grains, and from one and a half years old, cook porridge from whole grains.

Introducing complementary foods to a one-year-old child should be done very carefully. Start with one coffee spoon and watch carefully to see if:

  • allergy;
  • constipation;
  • bowel disorder.

If everything went well, the child’s portion of porridge is increased by a spoon per day, gradually increasing to a volume of 150-200 grams.

Serving size of porridge

What size should be the correct portion of porridge for a baby? Pediatricians recommend following this regimen:

  • 150 grams – at 6 months;
  • 180 grams – at 8 months;
  • 200 grams – per year;
  • 250 grams – over a year old.

You should start complementary feeding with a new type of cereal with one teaspoon or coffee spoon, carefully observing the baby's reaction to complementary feeding. If bowel problems or rashes on the face occur, millet should be removed from the diet. The baby may have an intolerance to the components of the grain.

Stool disorder (constipation) can be caused by an imperfect digestive system, which is not able to digest this type of cereal. Also, a negative reaction can be caused by improper grinding of flour - for the initial intake of millet porridge, the cereal must be ground very finely.

How to properly feed your baby new porridge? To do this, you need to add a spoon or two of millet to a portion of your usual food. The next day, the baby is given 3-4 spoons of millet for the main portion of breakfast. So they gradually replace the already familiar porridge with millet, bringing it to the required volume.

A new type of food cannot be introduced into the baby’s diet if he feels unwell, is capricious, or is recovering from an illness. Also, you should not feed your baby new food after a preventive vaccination.

Millet porridge recipe

Millet porridge for children is a valuable food product that provides energy for vigorous activity. In one year, the baby actively explores the world, is interested in everything and spends a lot of calories on movement. Porridge can provide a growing baby’s body with everything necessary for growth and development.

You should choose millet very carefully. It is necessary to focus not only on the bright color of the grains, but also on the date of packaging of the product. Old millet is bitter and will discourage the child from wanting to eat.

Until the baby is one year old, the porridge is cooked to a liquid consistency. To do this, dilute 10 grams of flour in one hundred grams of water and cook for 3-5 minutes over low heat. Make sure that the porridge does not burn - stir constantly with a spoon.

After the baby turns one year old, you can cook porridge at the rate of half a glass of flour per 200 grams of water. If your baby is used to eating porridge with milk, you can dilute the water with milk. To improve the taste, add fruit or vegetable puree and a spoonful of melted butter to the finished dish.

Wheat porridge recipe

Wheat cereal is no less valuable and healthy for a baby who is one year old. Wheat porridge replenishes energy consumption, and it contains much more iron and phosphorus than millet. It is necessary to cook wheat porridge for a child under one year old in the same way as millet porridge.

First, you should wash the cereal and dry it, then grind it in a coffee grinder. For babies over a year old, we use a coarser grind of flour, and for a one and a half year old baby, you can cook porridge from whole washed cereals.

If the baby refuses porridge, you should not force feed it. Gradually get used to new foods so that you don’t develop a negative reaction when eating. Try adding breast milk or formula to the porridge: the familiar taste will help you adapt to new taste sensations.

Important! You should not offer your baby food prepared yesterday or the day before. All dishes must be freshly cooked.
