November in church calendar The Orthodox Church is not a rich month for major events. In November, if we are talking about the Gregorian calendar, there are no great or twelfth holidays, and there are no days of special commemoration of the dead. Yes, strictly speaking, according to the Julian calendar, which the church lives by, November 21 is the Feast of the Entry into the Temple Holy Mother of God, but even believers do not use the Julian calendar in the world, so for us this holiday is next month, December 4th. However, at the end of the month one of the the most important posts throughout the year, Christmas, as well as throughout November, there are memorable days that should also be remembered. Let us pay attention to the Orthodox holidays in November 2017, what memorable dates are contained in the calendar of church holidays of the Orthodox Church in Russia.

The Nativity fast is one of the oldest in Christianity, and historical sources brought to us information that at least in the fourth century AD this post already definitely existed.

Christmas post in his modern version lasts exactly 40 days before Christmas, from November 28 to January 6. This is if we are talking about the Gregorian calendar. According to the church, Julian calendar, fasting begins on November 15 and ends on December 24. Throughout our century, the 13-day discrepancy between the two calendars will remain, so for us the period of the secular calendar from November 28 to January 6 is the always-time starting and ending dates for the Nativity Fast.

The Nativity Fast is a time of preparation for one of the most important holidays of the whole year for all Christians - Christmas.

Fasting is, as usual, a time of abstinence from food, but this is not the main thing in fasting. Abstaining from food is not the meaning or essence of fasting, but only a means of achieving spiritual cleansing. During Lent you should also not be angry, give free rein to passions and lust, you should not lie and slander, you should abstain from all human weaknesses. Pride in observing fasting is considered a sin—those who do not observe it cannot be considered unworthy. Such thoughts make a Christian an even more unworthy person.

As for food, the Nativity Fast provides for the following meals by day of the week. Until January 2, the following diet is allowed:

  • Monday - dry eating (plant foods without heat treatment, uncooked food - bread is allowed, but vegetable oils, wine and hot drinks are not allowed),
  • Tuesday - you can have hot food with vegetable oil (of course, without meat, dairy products and eggs),
  • environment - dry eating,
  • Thursday - you can have hot food with vegetable oil,
  • Friday - dry eating,
  • Saturday - you can include fish and wine in your diet along with hot food with vegetable oil,
  • Sunday is the same as Saturday.

After January 2 and until the 5th, at the most last days Lent, the diet usually becomes more strict - on Saturday and Sunday the diet excludes fish and wine. In 2018, this provision is not relevant - the period January 2-5 falls on weekdays.

Please note that on the Feast of the Entry of the Blessed Virgin Mary into the Temple, December 4, the diet is the same as for weekends. In 2017, this holiday falls on Monday, so instead of dry eating on this holiday, you can have hot food with fish and wine.

Of course, by allowing the consumption of wine, the church means moderation in the use of this drink.

On January 6, Christmas Eve, after Vespers, believers can begin celebrating Christmas with sweet porridge, which is prepared from wheat, rice or other cereals.
