Everyone dreams of having a comfortable and beautiful bed, but for small-sized housing it is difficult to choose a model that would simultaneously meet all these requirements. Here it is important to rationally use the limited area of the room, so you should pay attention to the option with a lifting mechanism. Self-assembly of a bed with a lifting mechanism according to the instructions in the video is a completely accessible process.

Having a comfortable bed allows a person to get enough sleep and regain strength before a new day. If the bedroom is not large in size, do not be upset. It is enough to choose a bed with a lifting mechanism, which is characterized by compact dimensions, high comfort and original design. Moreover, the cost of such furniture can vary, so you can choose an option to suit any budget. And to save even more, it’s worth analyzing how professionals assemble such structures and do the same.

The assembly diagram of a bed with a lifting mechanism is quite simple, but first you should know the main advantages of such furniture. Products of this type provide a person with comfort during rest and sleep, but do not take up much free space in the room. The lifting mechanism is attached to a spacious box, inside of which you can store bed linen and bedspreads. Thus, with a small area, you can solve the problem of storing bedding. For these reasons, beds with a lifting mechanism are so popular among owners of small city apartments.

To independently assemble such a structure, you will need the following tools and materials:

  • hardware;
  • set of screwdrivers, ring wrench, screwdriver;
  • wrench;
  • yardstick;
  • building level;
  • hammer;
  • a sheet of paper, a simple pencil.

Thus, the work will not require expensive equipment or rare tools, which greatly facilitates the preparatory stage.

Assembly steps

The entire assembly process consists of several important steps:

  • installation of the box and base;
  • fastening legs if necessary;
  • installation of corner ties;
  • installation of a lifting mechanism;
  • installation of a traverse;
  • installation of frame and mattress holders.

The instructions for assembling a bed with a lifting mechanism indicate all the work processes. At the first stage you will need:

  • remove all elements of the future structure from the packaging film and inspect them for defects. If one of the elements is defective, it will need to be replaced. A frame with cracks is unlikely to be reliable and safe for sleeping;
  • lay out the drawers according to their intended purpose on the floor, with the side with the holes facing up;
  • connect the drawers to each other using fasteners, and then hang the head of the bed on the box you assembled with your own hands;
  • To fix individual structural elements into a single whole, you will need to use a screwdriver and screws.

Note that some models may use longitudinal strength elements. For example, solid longitudinal ties, as well as corners or brackets that are fixed to the frame with screws. It is important to take this into account during the work process.

Housing assembly

For ease of assembly, the Selena bed frame is made of semi-assembled blocks:
1 - Front part, 2 - Headboard, 3 - Left strip, 4 - Right strip, 5 - Crossbar, 6 - Longitudinal strip.

Installation of legs

The supports of the structure are fixed to the frame using special platforms located on the longitudinal elements themselves, or screwed separately onto the frames. Then the shelves and corners are attached in the upper part of the drawers. Some bed models do not have free-standing supports, instead of which a solid side frame is used.

Experts insist that you should not tighten the screws right away, because in the future you will need to align the drawers, shelves, and corners in a perpendicular plane. The lifting mechanism is secured at the next stage of work.

Installation of corner ties

This process is performed after attaching the supports to the bed and is necessary to make the structure more reliable and stable. Each corner tie consists of 5 parts:

  • the screed itself;
  • 2 footers;
  • 2 countersunk bolts.

To work, you will need to use a 10 mm drill, screwdriver, hexagon or hammer. If it is necessary to disassemble the structure, the presence of a tie will allow you to easily disconnect the parts from one another.

Corner screed

Mounting the lifting mechanism

The next stage of work is to install and secure the lifting mechanism to the bed. It is extremely important not to make a mistake when placing it and determining the sides, because otherwise the smooth operation of the mechanism will be disrupted. To do this you will need:

  • fix the bed frame on the lifting mechanism. Use screws for these purposes. Before tightening the fastenings completely, be sure to even out the gaps between the frame and the base;
  • Clarify the required level of force to control the model. Installation of the unit into the lifting mechanism should be done by hand with the cylinder facing upwards, using nuts with a locking ring and fluoroplastic washers;
  • tighten the nuts until they stop, and then loosen the fastening slightly, leaving minimal play. The operation of the lifting mechanism should be checked several times.

Mounting the lifting mechanism

Installation of frame and mattress holders

It is worth installing comfortable-to-use handles on the bed frame for trouble-free control of the structure, as well as a mattress limiter. All work must be completed by installing the bottom of the bed and putting the cover on its perimeter.

If the base consists of lamellas (from 15 to 25 pieces depending on the model), they will need to be hammered into special holders with a hammer. Each lamella is fixed on both sides, so the process may take some time. Now you know how to assemble a bed with a lifting mechanism, so this task will not be difficult.

Possible difficulties

Of course, professionals with extensive experience in assembling various types of furniture can easily handle assembling beds with a lifting mechanism. But beginners in this matter may encounter some difficulties, which can be found in the table.

Possible difficulties Solution
Need for drilling holes Holes for fasteners will need to be made in different parts of the structure. It is especially important to properly organize them in the headboard for its secure fixation on the frame. A screwdriver is required to create the holes, and the headboard is secured with screws.
Assembly and installation of gas lift The installation process itself is quite complex, so the work must be done without haste, carefully, and consistently. It is important to maintain symmetry in work and adhere to safety measures.
Mistakes in marking the bed frame An error at this stage will negate all efforts, so it is worth reading the assembly instructions from the manufacturer of this model in advance. You can also ask the opinion of experienced furniture makers.

Remember a few more important points.

The bed with a folding mechanism is a transformable design. If necessary, the product can be modified into a cabinet or a furniture wall, helping to save space in small apartments. The design is easy to use, compact, technologically advanced, and provides quality rest. A DIY folding bed is a budget option. Self-assembly reduces the cost of the product, allows you to develop your own design, add details (shelves, mirrors, etc.).

Types of folding beds

Designs with a folding mechanism are multifunctional, because... combine several pieces of furniture. Manufacturers produce beds combined with a wardrobe, sofa or shelving unit. There are designs that transform into a cabinet.

A bed with a folding mechanism, built into the closet, allows you to accommodate a single bed or a double Euro-format bed. Options have been developed that hide 2 separate beds. The doors of the simulated cabinet can swing open or slide apart.

Models of beds combined with a wardrobe and a sofa are ergonomic and allow you to create a place for daytime rest. The design is spacious, so only double-size models are produced. A bed with a sofa is more expensive than other transformers.

The design with a folding mechanism can be modified into a cabinet. When disassembled, the product serves as a sleeping bed, and during the day it frees up space for a study. The model is budget-friendly, because does not require a powerful lifting device.

Placing a folding bed on the balcony is an ergonomic solution for small studios. But to organize a resting place, you will need to insulate the room.

Folding beds can have one or several tiers. The more common products are single-seat. Designs with 2 tiers are used when arranging rooms for children and teenagers.

According to the opening method, models are divided into 2 groups: transversely folding (horizontal) and longitudinally folding (vertical).

A bed with a vertical lift is popular in small apartments. The sleeping bed is attached perpendicular to the wall surface. The model is not limited in length and width. The size range is represented by single, one-and-a-half and double products. The structures are massive and are not intended for children's rooms.

Beds with a horizontal lifting mechanism are suitable for narrow rooms with low ceilings. The designs are optimal for attics and children's rooms, because... take up minimal space even when unfolded. The products can be disguised as bookcases and shelves.

Types of fasteners

3 types of folding mechanisms for transforming beds have been developed: manual, spring, gas.

The manual device does not have elements that make it easier to lift the stock, so it requires physical effort during operation. The mounting structure is simple, reliable and inexpensive. However, the mechanism is not suitable for children's bedrooms.

The spring design is universal, with an affordable price. The lifting mechanism uses twisted spirals. The manufacturer issues a warranty on the system from 3 to 5 years. During operation, the bed must be inspected and the condition of the springs monitored.

The gas mechanism is the most functional, reliable, and durable. The device does not require physical effort during operation, because the bed is raised by gas lifts. The power of the mechanism is selected depending on the dimensions of the structure and the weight of the mattress. Manufacturers' warranty on devices is 10 years. The cost of the mechanism is high.

Fastening elements are selected taking into account the dimensions of the bed. The configuration of the room and the availability of free space influence the choice of horizontal or vertical type of lift.

The power of the gas mechanism is selected taking into account operating conditions. Some devices have a load limit, so the weight of the bed and mattress must be taken into account when choosing a wall mounting system. Amplifiers and blockers are included with the mechanisms to protect against arbitrary operation of the device.

Drawings of a folding bed

During production, you can use circuits with standard parameters. Custom design is also possible. You can design furniture according to drawings tailored to the dimensions, room configuration and required functionality. The product can be supplemented with a chest of drawers, drawers, shelves, including them in the drawing.

A typical design should be built using the parameters of the bed base, cabinet frame, lifting mechanism, and decorative elements. It is required to attach the box to the wall, based on the dimensions shown on the dimensional and assembly drawings. It is important to accurately carry out the installation diagram of the power element, taking into account the thickness of the mechanism, the height and width of the bed, the thickness of the sides, etc. It is required to display the main fastening lines in the drawings.

Self-assembly of the structure

Before making a folding bed, you need to prepare a set of tools, raw materials, elements and installation diagrams. You will need a wooden beam for the frame, edged boards for the crossbars, and furniture panels for the sides and headboard. The kit includes plywood sheets, loops for attaching the structure to the wall, and bars for the legs. The set of tools includes a tape measure, a level and a square, a jigsaw, a set of screwdrivers and screwdrivers, a drill, and a grinder.

Work on assembling the structure is carried out on a smooth surface. At each stage it is necessary to check the perpendicularity of the corners using a square. A typical design involves the assembly of an internal mechanism, a sleeping surface, front walls, handles, and straps for securing bedding and a mattress.

DIY vertical folding bed

The vertical lift design includes a box, a sleeping surface, and a lifting device. For the type of fastening, the strength of the walls is important; concrete or brick panels are preferred.

Work begins with the assembly of the frame, the dimensions of which are influenced by the size of the sleeping bed. The main components of the box: vertical and horizontal walls, back panel, supporting shelf and plinth. The depth of the frame is determined taking into account the thickness of the mattress, 32 cm is added to the indicator. For a furniture box, the width of the mattress is important, to which 16 cm is added. The parts of the box are attached with self-tapping screws, the elements located on the facade are attached with glue.

Then the sleeping area is assembled, which consists of the sides, headboard, and slatted base. The mattress is attached to loops of belts. The box and the bed are connected with a lifting mechanism using self-tapping screws. The work is completed by installing the parts. Shelves are installed on the sides of the box, and cabinets for linen are installed below.

What do you do with old furniture?

Modern apartments often lack space, and a DIY bed with a lifting mechanism can help a little in this matter. There will be enough space to store linen and bedding so that they do not take up too much space while you are awake.

A bed with a lifting mechanism is quite practical, as you can store things in it.

The base of the bed itself and its side and end mechanisms can be made of any material. Popular are various types of natural wood, chipboard, laminate with film that imitates various materials. Whether it rests on the legs or stands on the floor with its entire frame does not matter much and depends solely on the preferences of the owners. A double bed without legs makes cleaning easier, as a lot of dust accumulates under the legs.

Materials and tools

The most accessible and inexpensive material for making a bed is chipboard.

The manufacture of any furniture, even not as complex as that which is supplemented with a lifting mechanism, begins with drawing up drawings, selecting materials and preparing tools. An easy-to-process material, inexpensive and accessible, is sheet chipboard, from which most of all furniture is currently made. You can also use OSB or oriented strand board. Solid wood will require large financial investments, but working with it is not difficult and can be done with your own hands. Most of the work will be related to wood processing, and therefore the appropriate tool will be required:

  • electric jigsaw;
  • screwdriver and a set of bits for it;
  • welding machine;
  • grinder with a metal disc;
  • roulette;
  • level;
  • marker, pencil;
  • steel strips;
  • upholstery fabric;
  • foam;
  • furniture stapler;
  • construction hairdryer.

Before making a bed equipped with a lifting mechanism, you need to find out the optimal dimensions of the product. According to standards, the length of the beds is 2 meters, and the width depends on the desire of the owner and ranges from 0.9 to 2 m. It is the width that affects the strength required from the lifting mechanism, since the greater the width, the higher the weight of the mattress being lifted.

Installation of the lifting mechanism

This mechanism is of paramount importance, since it is it that allows the top of the bed to be raised, gaining access to the hollow lower part, equipped for storage. Most often, it consists of a set of steel strips assembled into a structure similar to a frame with movable joints and equipped with pneumatic shock absorbers.

The top bar is attached to the bottom of the sleeping surface lattice frame. In order to secure it in this position, it is necessary to make a bar from rolled angle steel or fittings of similar strength. Two more slats are the bases of the lift, which must be installed on the bed frame parts. The next pair of slats will adjust the height to which the mattress frame rises and also keep it raised when needed. The lower support bar, in order to facilitate the movement of the hinge supports, has deviations in shape from the angle of the plane in those places where the hinges are attached to it.

All parts of such a mechanism, which are made for the bed with your own hands, must have high strength characteristics. The load when using the lifting mechanism is distributed not only on the slats and shock absorber, but also on the fastening points and fastening fittings with which the mechanism is connected to the bed. If suitable tools or materials for making a lifting mechanism cannot be found, it can be purchased at furniture fittings stores or even made to order in non-standard sizes.

Additional frame

To increase the strength of a bed with a lifting mechanism, it is necessary to make a steel frame.

The strength of any sleeping place can be increased with the help of a steel frame made specifically for it. For bed sizes ranging from double and larger, this is just as important as for non-standard shaped beds. The frame is made from the same steel profile as the lifting mechanism, or a slightly larger section. Overall dimensions must be pre-designed in accordance with the design; sawing the profile into blanks is carried out using a grinder. The parts are connected with a neat weld.

It is imperative to install transverse posts between the longitudinal and transverse elements at the corners of their connection, which will add strength to the structure and prevent it from collapsing under loads during operation. Further work on making a bed with a lifting mechanism with your own hands involves finishing the ends of the frame of the future product. From the material selected for this purpose, blanks are cut to size and attached to the welded finished frame with bolts or self-tapping screws. The legs are attached to the corners of the resulting shape, if they are provided for according to the product plan. Mobility, which makes it easier to move the product during cleaning, is provided by wheels attached to the bottom of the legs. If the legs are not provided for in the design, the wheels can be attached directly to the frame.

A bed with a lifting mechanism is the best option for small apartments, which allows you to solve several problems related to the improvement of the room. Practicality, reliability and versatility are its main advantages. It can act not only as a sleeping place, but also serve as a chest of drawers for storing various things and accessories. Making a bed with a lifting mechanism with your own hands is not as difficult as it might seem at first glance. If all the requirements and recommendations of specialists are met, the bed will turn out no worse than the factory one. In order to figure out how to do this, it is necessary to divide the entire process into several stages, each of which requires special attention.

Features of such models

Beds with a lifting device have a number of features that must be taken into account when making them yourself:

  • the dimensions of the bed, which mainly affect the strength of the lifting device. The larger the bed, the more weight will be placed on the mechanism. According to the standards, the bed size is 2 meters in length, the width of a single bed is 0.9 m, a double bed is 2 m;
  • beds with a lifting device can be single or double;
  • the mechanism can be mounted horizontally or vertically;
  • The height of the bed affects the capacity of the box. If the product is planned to be made with legs, then the box will be much smaller than a bed without them. A product without legs has another important advantage: the absence of dust underneath;
  • Assembling a product with your own hands requires consistent, responsible implementation of all its stages, these are drawings, preparation of materials, production of individual parts of the bed, and their assembly. On average, it will take 1-2 months to make a bed, subject to the simultaneous completion of other daily duties;
  • the choice of material should be made not only from personal preferences, but also depending on the design of the room in which the product is planned to be installed.

Materials and tools

Any construction process or making furniture with your own hands begins with drawing up a drawing, as well as preparing the necessary tools and materials. The choice of material begins with the base of the box. The most common and inexpensive material for making any furniture is chipboard sheets. But other materials, such as OSB, particle boards and others can also be used, it all depends on the preferences of the owner and financial capabilities. Next, the upholstery material is prepared, the choice of which depends solely on personal preferences and the design of the room.

The filling of the bed consists of foam rubber and upholstery fabric. Their dimensions and thickness are prepared according to the drawn up drawing.

Which lifting mechanism to choose

The design of modern beds allows them to be used in rooms of different sizes, while having a suitable lifting mechanism, thanks to which the bed can be reclined both horizontally and vertically. In addition, lift beds are classified according to the type of built-in lift. The simplicity and ease of use of furniture depends on it. The lifting mechanism is divided into 3 types:

  • with manual lift;
  • spring;
  • on gas shock absorbers.
Gas lift Spring Manual

The manual lift mechanism is the most affordable device because it does not contain additional devices in the form of shock absorbers or springs. Beds with such a mechanism are mainly used for adults, since when opening the box you need to make a lot of effort, children cannot cope with such a load. But, besides the disadvantages, the manual mechanism also has advantages - strength, durability.

The spring mechanism is convenient to use, but its service life ranges from 3 to 5 years, after which it will need to be completely replaced. The main cause of failure is wear and stretching of the spring. The big advantage of the spring mechanism is its price; it is relatively small, thanks to which it is very popular and in demand.

The gas shock absorber is the most convenient, reliable, durable mechanism. The device operates smoothly, silently, with virtually no human intervention. The service life of such a mechanism ranges from 5 to 10 years, with constant use. The choice of shock absorber is made depending on the dimensions of the product and the weight of the sleeping frame. The mechanism on gas shock absorbers is expensive, but at the same time in demand.

When making a bed with your own hands, a lifting device can be bought in furniture stores or ordered online. You can make it yourself from suitable materials. But when choosing materials, you need to take into account the fact that the load from the mattress falls not only on the shock absorbers and mechanism bars, but also on the fastening points with fastening fittings.

The mechanism is fastened in the following order:

  • first, the upper strip of the device is installed, to the base of the box, the lathing of the sleeping plane;
  • to completely secure it, a bar is made from rolled iron;
  • assembly of the two subsequent strips will allow you to control the height of the rise of the grid with the mattress;
  • the lower support bar is attached to the main box; it is necessary to facilitate the sliding of the hinge supports;
  • Having finished installing the mechanism, you need to check all its fastenings.

Making a lifting frame

Assembling a lifting frame with your own hands consists of two main stages, these are carpentry and carpentry work and the processing process.

Carpentry work:

  • assembly begins with the preparation of parts for the frame, according to the drawing, which indicates all dimensions;
  • Next, the base of the frame is assembled, this is a box of calibrated boards. The process must be carried out on the floor to avoid distortions. To align the corners, you must use a construction square;
  • The structure is tied using metal corners, and for strength, the joints are glued with wood glue. When fastening, you need to pay attention to the heads of the screws; they should sink into the wood, but not too much. It is recommended to immediately treat any cut areas that appear to remove burrs;
  • in case of large sleeping space, it is recommended to make a central partition along the frame;
  • the next stage is attaching the slats, which are screwed using self-tapping screws from the inside of the sidewalls, aligning them along the bottom edge of the box. They are needed to attach lamellas to them. The size of the slats should be within 20 by 80 mm;
  • The same slats act as slats, only their length will correspond to the width of the bed. They are fastened to support rails along the frame, in increments of no more than 15 cm. Plywood is also suitable for slats, but in this case the installation of a central partition is required;
  • At this point the carpentry process is completed and the lifting frame is ready.

Frame processing:

  • this process involves refining wooden parts with sandpaper or a special sanding machine and coating them with varnish;
  • One of the nuances of preparing the frame is a plywood sheet, which lies on the lamellas to evenly distribute the load. Or you can lay the lamellas with a step frequency of 8–10 cm.

Making the main frame

The assembly of the frame, like all other components of the bed, is carried out in stages. First of all, to manufacture the main frame, its components are prepared. Design, height, size of backrests, presence of legs - all these nuances are reflected in a pre-drawn drawing. The main requirement in the manufacture of a product is reliability, strength and quality of the material.

As mentioned above, any material can be used, depending on financial capabilities and personal preferences. For the frame of a double standard bed (2000x1800) you will need: for the side parts - two boards 207 cm long, for the end elements you need two boards 182 cm long. They are assembled according to the same principle as the lifting frame, using screws, corners and glue . In the assembly process, this moment is the most critical, so before attaching the corners, you need to check that all corners correspond to 90 degrees. Excess glue that has come out must be removed immediately so that in the future it does not cause difficulties when processing the frame.

When making large beds with your own hands, you need to install a stiffener in the main frame through the longitudinal axis of the product. If the bed design includes legs, the last step in the installation process is their installation. The simplest option for making them is to assemble two bars (40x50) and install them at the depth of two crowns of the bar. To strengthen the structure, you can also install a leg in the center. Having placed the structure in its original position, you can proceed to its processing, clean it and varnish it.

To prevent the floor from scratching, you can glue pieces of linoleum to the ends of the legs.

Sheathing of the product

The final stage in the manufacture of a bed with a lifting device is its design and upholstery. Depending on the design of the room, the personal preferences of the owner, as well as banal financial capabilities, cladding can be done using:

  • fabrics;
  • skin;
  • dermantine.

If the product is made from high-quality wood, it can be treated with paints and varnishes.

For the cladding process you will need:

  • fabric (or other selected materials);
  • construction stapler;
  • sheet foam rubber.

The covering is done on the main frame and headboard. To create a small volume and airiness of the upholstery material, a pad of sheet foam rubber is made between the wood and the fabric. A construction stapler is quite sufficient for fastening fabric; its metal staples, thanks to the spring mechanism, are driven quite firmly into the wood and hold the fabric tightly.

Making a headboard

The headboard for the bed can be made of the same material as the entire product, or you can use a regular sheet of plywood. You need to take the necessary measurements on plywood or other material and use a jigsaw to cut out the shape of the back that you like best. But you need to keep in mind that during the cladding process it is easier to work with rectangular shapes.

A headboard blank is cut from a sheet of plywood
A wooden border is attached to the workpiece

The headboard is upholstered according to the same principle as the main frame, using a construction stapler, sheathing material and sheets of foam rubber. The difference is that for the headboard the covering should be more airy, so two sheets of foam rubber are laid between the plywood and the material. Depending on the design of the bed, using foam rubber and different types of material, you can give a unique look to the headboard.

To summarize, we can say that when thinking about how to assemble a bed with a lifting mechanism, you should not be afraid of difficulties, because it is quite possible to do it yourself. The main condition for obtaining a good result is the sequential implementation of all installation stages, the first of which is drawing up a drawing, which indicates all the dimensions, the amount of material, and the necessary tools. If all geometric proportions are observed, the bed will turn out to be of much higher quality and more reliable than the purchased version. The material for its manufacture is selected depending on personal preferences, financial capabilities and room design.

In order to save space in small rooms, maximum benefit is extracted from each piece of furniture located in the room. To create a reliable sleeping place, a steel base is installed, made of a metal profile, cut with a grinder into parts of the required dimensions and connected together into a solid structure by welding, which is an important working step. After completing the welding work, a timber frame is fixed to the base.

The final stage is decoration

After the bed is completed, the product is sheathed using foam rubber, upholstery fabric and a furniture stapler. Thanks to the covering, the frame and frame elements are hidden, resulting in a soft, comfortable and aesthetically designed model.

How does the process of covering a finished model take place?

Foam rubber is placed on the base of the bed. The required number of layers is determined by the master independently.

The sides of the bed are covered with foam rubber

Foam rubber is nailed on top with an overlap of approximately 3-4 mm

The foam rubber is covered on top with upholstery fabric prepared in advance. The upholstery is chosen according to the interior of the room and the tastes of the owner.

The sides of the bed are upholstered with leatherette

The trim is attached to the base using a stapler, which firmly drives the staples into the furniture frame. Staples on the trim are not noticeable and do not affect the aesthetic appearance.

The corners of the upholstery are secured with corners

The sides of the model are decorated with upholstery. In places where the decorative fabric and the lift come into contact, a sealant is placed under the upholstery material.

The legs are fixed to the finished model if they are provided in the schematic image.
