Despite the large selection of ready-made furniture, many people spend a lot of time and effort searching for a suitable wardrobe or bed. Various models are sifted through the “sieve of doubts”, differing from each other in design, color and size, but nothing fits. This is exactly the problem encountered by a user of our site with the nickname avamonster, and a homemade bed became an excellent way out of the “furniture dead end” for him. In this article we are making a bed together with our user!

DIY bed

I need a transformable bed for my house that can be quickly and easily stored in a closet against the wall. When folded, the front part of such a bed should be completely identical to the “facade” of a regular wardrobe. Therefore, there should be no protruding handles, protruding legs, etc. outside. Such a bed should not take up much space. When unfolded, the “transformer” should turn into a fully functional bed designed for comfortable sleep, and not a guest “crib”.

Having scoured the Internet, reviewed dozens of diagrams and sketches of beds and visited several furniture stores, the forum member could not find a model that would fully satisfy his needs. Namely:

  • You need a transformer for a standard mattress size of 1600x2000x150 mm, like a normal sofa; The height of the unfolded bed should not exceed 45-55 cm;
  • The width of the transforming bed is equal to: the width of the mattress (1600 mm) plus the thickness of the side walls of the cabinet made of chipboard. That is, approximately 1632 mm. The depth of the bed is equal to the depth of the cabinet - 450 mm. When unfolded, the length of the bed should not exceed 2100-2200 mm;
  • In the open position, the folding bed should fit well into the interior of the apartment, and not look like the simplest analogue of a “folding bed”. Should be easy and quick to clean;
  • An unfolded bed should not take up much space in the house and interfere with free movement around the room, opening adjacent cabinets, cabinets, drawers, etc.;
  • Safety: the bed should not have sharp corners that you can hit with your foot, hidden cavities and crevices where pets or small children can crawl into. The gas lift or opening mechanism springs should not be located near the sleeper's head;
  • “Humane” price tag.

We present a selection of photographs of those folding beds that a forum member viewed, and also give his comments on why this or that model did not suit him.

A quick glance at this picture is enough to understand that this is not a simple wardrobe, but a wardrobe into which they managed to build a “folding bed”. It would be better not to build it in - there are visible gaps at the bottom and top, and the handles are located very inconveniently.

This lifting model, when folded, is no different from a regular wardrobe, but once it is unfolded, the bed blocks access to cabinets and drawers. This means that it must constantly be retracted and lowered, which is very inconvenient.

Wardrobe bed option with sliding doors. This model does not take up much space, and when folded it is indistinguishable from a standard cabinet. The main inconvenience is the large depth of the “transformer” - 80 cm. You will have to sleep, practically lying with your head and shoulders in the closet. Not everyone will like this. So this “guest” option was also dropped.

A typical model that can often be seen in stores. Avamonster was not happy with the fact that, instead of springs or gas lift, the bed is removed using a counterweight. When it reclines, you can see that the bottoms look like the legs of a “folding bed.” And the price exceeds 40 thousand rubles.

Another common option. Avamonster's main complaints about this folding bed: the legs stick out from above like “tendrils”, and when opened, the mattress lies inside the bed frame. Walking next to such a bed, you can accidentally hit your foot on its sharp corner. A block with springs hangs next to the head, and by the “tram” handles you can immediately determine that this is not an ordinary cabinet, but a “transformer”.

avamonster User FORUMHOUSE

All the models that I saw in the store had a design: “a box made of chipboard or plywood, into which a mattress is simply placed.” This didn't suit me. I have been to the USA, where I saw a different design: the frame is “inside” the base for the mattress, and the mattress itself is slightly wider than the base. The springs or gas lift are located under the mattress, and do not stick out in front of the face. It seems to me that this option is safer and easier to use.

There is also an option with a double caterpillar bed, but such “transformers” are expensive and do not often catch your eye.

The search for a ready-made folding bed was unsuccessful, but a negative result is also a result. As a result of his ordeals, avamonster finally decided on the list of requirements for the product and therefore decided to assemble the bed himself.

This “two-in-one” option is also interesting, but this “make your own double bed” project is much more difficult to implement at home.

Material required to assemble a transformable bed

Looking ahead, let's say that a forum member managed to assemble a double bed that was no different and even superior to industrial or custom-made samples. The width of the “transformer” is 1640 mm, the length when unfolded is 2130 mm, the height is 500 mm.

According to avamonster, sketchup helped him achieve the success of the project and do everything right the first time, without numerous rework and changes. Having spent three months studying the program from “0”, having sat over the drawings and dimensions, the forum member sketched out virtual models of the crib and diagrams of its components, which can be rotated on the monitor screen (see pictures).

This approach allowed us to avoid many mistakes. After all, many novice craftsmen often forget the main construction proverb: “measure twice, cut once.” An attempt to turn everything into metal at once, without plans, drawings and competent calculation of several options, leads to damage to the material due to constant changes to the design of the product.

A DIY bed is made from simple materials and does not require special tools for its manufacture.

What is needed to make a product

  • Chipboard sheets - 1580x995x16 mm. Cutting to size, and edging the ends of the slabs was done “on the side”. It took 12 thousand rubles;

  • Custom made springs for the lifting mechanism. Those. spring parameters: rod diameter - 4 mm, outer diameter - 36 mm, number of turns - 30. Spring length with hooks - 18 cm. Tension stroke - 21 cm. Applied force -55 kg. The forum member calculated the spring parameters, which depend on the “arm” of the lever and the total weight of the bed, using a special calculator. A set of 5 parts cost Avamonster 3.5 thousand rubles;

  • The do-it-yourself bed frame is a profile pipe with dimensions of 4x2 cm. The wall thickness of the frame pipe is 2 mm. A total of 18 meters of such pipe were purchased. The pipe was cut to size into elements on site so that it could be transported home in a regular car. This took another 1.5 thousand rubles;

avamonster

Because I don’t have a welding machine, so I had to drill holes in the pipes for the mounting bolts. This made the task of assembling the bed-wardrobe much more difficult. The best option is to weld everything yourself or have it done to order by a metalworking shop, but I also had to clean the rust from the pipes. I covered the surfaces of all visible metal parts of the pipes with wood-like film.

  • Hardware. The DIY bed was assembled using bolts, nuts and screws. For strength and rigidity, the homemade frame was twisted into corners for M6 bolts. All bolted connections were also calculated for shear load. The forum member spent another 4 thousand rubles on all the necessary fasteners.

How to assemble a transforming bed yourself: main steps

The base for the mattress (chipboard sheets) was screwed to a homemade frame using special drill-tip screws. Such self-tapping screws have a “drill” at the end: chipboard should be passed with a larger diameter, steel with a smaller one, and already at the finish a recess is countersunk in the wood for the head of the self-tapping screw. Thus, in one step, the chipboard board is attracted to the metal frame without pre-drilling it.

The frame design is designed so that the soft mattress is the widest part of the crib. In this case, it is impossible to hit your foot on the hard protruding edge of the frame.

In conditions of a shortage of square meters, one has to look for ways to extract maximum benefit from literally every piece of furniture. Even from a bed that seems to be intended only for rest and cannot perform any other tasks. But as practice shows, some furniture models are very multifunctional. For example, a bed with a lifting mechanism - it can be used both for sleeping and for storing all kinds of bedding. Do you think such a bed will cost too much? You're wrong - you can even make it yourself. And our photos, drawings and assembly videos will help you with this.

Preparation for installation

Making a bed with a lifting mechanism should begin with the preparation of drawings, materials and tools.

If you are doing this kind of work for the first time, it is better to use ready-made furniture assembly drawings to avoid serious design errors that will cost you the functionality of the bed.

Materials and tools you will need:

  • Chipboard and MDF;
  • lifting mechanism;
  • screwdriver and screws;
  • jigsaw;
  • bars;
  • boards;

  • wooden slats;
  • furniture stapler;
  • upholstery material;
  • sheet foam rubber.

As for the lifting mechanism, it can be of two types:

  1. Gas – operates using gas spring-shock absorbers. It can be blocking - with fixation in a certain position, as well as standard - without fixation. Main advantages: noiselessness, ease of operation, soft finishing.
  2. Mechanical - operates using metal springs. The main advantage is the ability to adjust the operation of the lifting system by adding, removing, loosening and tightening springs.

Advice. If you are planning to assemble a double bed, choose a gas mechanism - it is more durable and durable.

Now you can start making furniture.

Bed assembly

First of all, you need to build a solid foundation for the furniture. To do this, make:

  • sidewalls, drawers, headboards and bottoms for drawers - made of chipboard or MDF;
  • the frame for the base is made of bars;
  • mattress flooring - made of wooden boards and slats.

Then assemble the bed base from all these elements:

  • secure the bottom for future boxes on the timber frame;
  • install the drawers and sides on the frame, and on top of them - the mattress flooring;
  • secure the headboard to the base.

Use self-tapping screws to connect parts.

Then install the lifting mechanism. It is sold ready-made, so you only need to firmly attach the system to the nuts that usually come with it: first, the lower steel bar is attached to the timber frame of the base, and then the upper one is attached to the side.

Advice. If you want to get the most durable bed, install it on a steel frame: take a profile and use a grinder to saw it into pieces of the required dimensions, and then weld the parts into a single structure - then fix the bed frame on it.

Sheathing and finishing

When the bed structure is ready, it needs to be sheathed. This is done in order, firstly, to hide the frame and frame elements, secondly, to obtain a comfortable and soft bed, and thirdly, to give the furniture an aesthetic appearance.

First of all, lay sheet foam rubber on the base - determine the optimal number of layers yourself. Cover it with upholstery material on top. It can be not only fabric, but also leatherette or leather. It is best to fasten the sheathing to the frame using a furniture stapler: its steel staples are firmly driven into the base, but at the same time remain unnoticeable on the sheathing, so they do not spoil the appearance of the furniture. Also, do not forget to cover the sides of the bed with decorative material. In those places where the finishing will often come into contact with the lifting mechanism, you can place small pads under the main material.

After covering, all that remains is to install the finishing accessories: support legs, wheels or rollers.

Thus, if you understand the instructions, then even making such a complex piece of furniture as a bed with a lifting mechanism will be a completely feasible task. So don’t rush to spend money on a store-bought product - with some effort, you can get an equally attractive model, but several times cheaper.

The bed is always associated with the pedestal of the seating area. A good one that will allow the body to rest and the muscles to relax. By the way, I already wrote an article about mattresses, there is also a lot of interesting stuff there. So, when choosing a bed, we are faced with very important questions that roughly indicate what it will be like. Now we are talking specifically about a family double bed. In market conditions we will find models with a lifting mechanism and with drawers, forged and wooden, or a loft bed. But you can make a double bed with your own hands, the main thing is to correctly understand the work process. So we’ll talk below about such a capacious and pleasant topic.

My family lived in a one-room apartment for some time; we had a small child. Of course, like most people, we rested on the sofa, as a result, sometimes in the morning we couldn’t turn our necks, and with regular full use, our sofa quickly lost its appearance (thanks to my daughter!).

At that moment we simply dreamed of our own bed - comfortable, with storage space. I even visualized how our bedroom should be furnished, what kind of furniture it would be. Well, the long-awaited moment has come when we have our own bedroom. I had already forgotten about those fantasies, but the questions about creating coziness and comfort remained. First of all, we started measuring the room and trying to figure out what size we wanted our sleeping place to be. It turned out that the Soviet 1.40 m is not enough, and 1.8 m does not fit into the dimensions. So, this issue has been resolved - we order a double bed measuring 1.6 * 2.0 m.

Always measure the length of the bed as follows: the height of the tallest family member plus 20 centimeters, at least.

We managed this perfectly, because... We are high average in height!

If space allows, then you can, of course, make the dimensions of the bed larger, but the question of whether you can find a mattress and bed linen without pre-ordering will remain open.

And in a normal family, no matter how big the bed is, it will still be cramped for mom: both the husband and children will snuggle up!

Also, for a comfortable sleep, it is better to choose a bed with slats or an orthopedic base. They allow air to circulate through the mattress, creating natural ventilation and allowing the mattress to last longer.

Well, another important question: what will your bed be made of? My friend, for example, considers everything except the massif to be lower caste. And a bed for two hundred thousand made of solid oak is the norm for her. It’s good when it’s like this, but there are also those who, even if they have the means, prefer other materials. So, there are many fans of wrought iron furniture. These options are also not standard, but look very elegant and self-sufficient.

Many people now choose modern models of double beds with a soft headboard and covered with eco-leather or velor. These are also very beautiful options and there is no doubt about the service life here either.

Yes, and materials are now often impregnated with dust-repellent compounds, and eco-leather has a “self-healing” function, so that its appearance will not be spoiled by either animals with claws or children with scissors.

What types of double beds are there: with a lifting mechanism and with storage drawers?

Additional storage space is important for every housewife. Now this can also be solved with the help of the under-bed space: the presence of a lifting mechanism or drawers.

I don’t argue with those who believe that a lot of dust accumulates under the bed and therefore it’s better not to store anything there, but it’s also better not to let it go to hidden and empty space.

So the designers thought of equipping the base of the bed with lifting mechanisms. Often in such secluded places they put things that are either not needed at all, but it’s a pity to throw them away, or are needed very rarely and during the season (skis, sleds, winter jackets).

And from such a hard-to-reach place they have now made a convenient storage place. When buying a bed with such a mechanism, ask the seller how long the mechanism is designed for; usually, this is written in the number of lifts. If, in your opinion, the mechanism is flimsy, then it is better to look for a better and more reliable one. Still, you are not buying for one year.

For me personally, the most convenient option has always been boxes. And that’s why we equipped our bed with them. The only point is that the length of the guides is no more than 60 cm, so part of the under-bed space is still lost.

For small apartments, such drawers can be a lifesaver, and in small bedrooms they can even replace a closet.

I’ll share a photo that captivated my husband and we discussed for a long time how to complete the existing sleeping area with additional drawers with our own hands.

I will say that using your imagination, you can make a double bed that, in addition to the function of a resting place, will also perform other functions.

Do-it-yourself double bed made of wood: drawings with photos and progress of work

I know people who, when buying any thing, click their tongues and say that it is not worth that kind of money. Therefore, I decided to make an additional point about creating a double bed with my own hands. There are several options, but let's look at one.

So, you need to buy boards and bars. Dimensions are shown in the photo.

Two boards for the sides of the bed, which you buy based on your size. At least three bars of approximately the same length; they will hold the base with the mattress on the sides and in the middle.

Two 70 cm legs at the head and two 50 cm legs at the foot.

Three or four boards the size of your width. One of them will cover the footboard, and three (or two, as you wish) will become the head of the bed.
Prepare all materials, clean them, sand them, saw them to your size.

For fastening you will need the following types of corners, shown in the photo.

The next step to the frame is to drill two side bars that will hold the base with the mattress, and one bar in the middle to add rigidity.

Well, all that remains is to put the frame on the legs and attach the headboard.

For craftsmen, this is just a blank; it can be painted, varnished or covered with material. It all depends on your imagination.
We place plywood or slats on the bars that are intended for the base.

There is another option. You are looking for a company in the city that makes furniture and can help you cut it. This is available for many localities.

To do this, I provide several diagrams and drawings.

You order a sheet of chipboard from them, give them a drawing.

There they will saw and trim the parts for you. All that remains is to bring it home and connect all the parts. This is for those who want to save money, but do not have enough time to create a completely hand made product.

Modern ideas for double beds (loft, with upholstered headboard)

A loft bed is made in apartments with a fairly high ceiling. It allows you to save space and allocate space for working or living areas. Of course, it is always fenced with sides to protect sleeping family members. Not for everyone, however, these are the layouts. Honestly, I have never seen apartments in our city of over a million people that allow you to comfortably place the second tier without hitting your head on it.

Loft bed

But the idea itself is very modern and perfect for active young people with a good imagination.

But I think this is the dream of many. There are options when it is put away in a closet or a full-fledged sofa is formed in its place. But its cost can be biting for owners of semi-trucks and studios. But what an idea!

Another trend is the white double bed. Snow-white furniture in a light and airy environment looks weightless and light. But there may be other options, for example, using colors contrasting with white.

Also, a white bed is suitable for all interior styles: both Scandinavian and minimalism, an excellent option for art deco and classics.

Double beds with upholstered headboards have taken over the internet. After all, not only the headboard is made soft, but the entire wall is designed for it.

Manufacturers already have a special line in the price list reserved for soft panels.

If there is a lot of furniture in the room, but you really want to install a large and comfortable bed, experts recommend choosing furniture with a lifting mechanism. This design has another name - “transformer”, and with the help of a lifting mechanism it is quite possible to save a lot of free space, which is always in short supply, especially in multi-storey buildings.

Buying new furniture is, as they say, only half of the planned event, because you still need to assemble the structure, and in such a design that it does not lose its functionality. Recommendations and
tips on assembling a bed with a lifting mechanism, which we will further analyze, and the video, available for viewing on the Internet resource both day and night, will further simplify the progress of the work.

Features in the design of transforming beds

In order to accurately assemble a comfortable sleeping place with a lifting element, first of all you need to familiarize yourself with the structural features of the furniture and, of course, prepare both the tools and materials that may be needed in the work.

Let's consider what elements a sleeping bed with a lifting mechanism consists of:

Depending on the chosen manufacturer, an orthopedic sleeping mattress may also be included with the bed.

  • A wall box or wardrobe is also considered as an element of a bed equipped with a lifting mechanism. After all, it is into such a structure, assembled from laminated chipboard, that the assembled furniture will rise. The size of the finished box should be slightly larger than the dimensions of the furniture, but not too large so that the bed does not fall out of the niche.

A transverse rod to which you will later need to fix the lifting The device is installed stationary at the head of the bed in the lower part of the closet.

Step-by-step furniture assembly

Having become familiar with the design features of the transforming bed, you can begin the step-by-step assembly of the structure with a lifting mechanism in the following sequence:

As you can understand, the process of installing furniture with a lifting mechanism is not so complicated if home craftsmen follow the instructions and advice during the work. And video instructions on the Internet resource, conducted by real professionals in their field, will help you solve any difficulty.

Given the lack of space in modern apartments, placing such large-sized furniture as a bed can become an insoluble problem. Folding beds and sofa beds, of course, can solve this issue, but every day you will need to assemble and disassemble the structure. And this is a waste of time, which is often not enough, and on top of everything else, such daily “exercises” quickly wear out the mechanisms. You can save space and get a full-fledged sleeping place if you install a lift-up bed in your apartment. But the offers of retail outlets in terms of the choice of such furniture are very limited, and it is almost impossible to buy ready-made ones. And the price will surprise even experienced buyers. Therefore, a do-it-yourself bed with a lifting mechanism will be an excellent option.

Dimensions

Before you start making a bed with a lifting mechanism with your own hands, it is worth preparing drawings. You should not take any generally accepted sizes as a basis. Make a model that will fully meet your parameters. To measure them, you will need a tape measure, a notepad, a pen and an assistant:

  • Lie on the floor, clasp your fingers and spread your elbows to the sides. Have your assistant measure from elbow to elbow. To this value add 10-15 centimeters on each side, the so-called comfort zone. This will be the width of your future resting place. If you plan to make a double bed, then the resulting value must be summed up.
  • Then measure your height. This can also be done while lying down. To the resulting value, add 30-40 centimeters - the comfort zone, and the desired length.
  • The height of the average bed is 50-60 centimeters. But here it is worth considering some nuances. If the sleeping place is intended for an elderly person, then it is better to increase this value. If you plan to make a podium bed with a lifting mechanism with your own hands, then it is better to reduce the average statistical data.

Important! In order to calculate the load on a bed with a lifting mechanism with your own hands, you do not need any special knowledge of mathematics. If you plan to make a double bed, a 15% safety margin is added to the weight of one or two users.

Materials and tools

Making a bed frame with a lifting mechanism with your own hands is not as difficult as it might seem. Any person with minimal carpentry skills can cope with this task, just purchase the necessary tools and materials:

  • In most cases, a do-it-yourself bed frame with a lifting mechanism is made only from wooden beams. This is the most affordable, durable and environmentally friendly material.
  • If you want to complicate the task and you have the skills to work with a welding machine, then the frame can also be metal. But processing and installing a wooden base is still easier.
  • For backs and sides, craftsmen recommend choosing chipboard or MDF. The latter option is preferable, since its density, and therefore durability, is higher. In addition, when assembling the bed, some of its parts will have to be glued.

Important! For MDF, regular PVA or similar “Joiner” is suitable. When gluing laminated chipboard, you will need nitro glue, which is not always desirable.

  • You can make the bottom of the bed from either plywood or slats. Plywood is a cheaper and more accessible option, slats are more convenient to use. You can make this material yourself, or you can order ready-made orthopedic parts that have a slightly convex shape.

Most of the work in the process of making a lifting bed with your own hands will involve wood processing, so you will need the appropriate tool:

  1. electric jigsaw;
  2. screwdriver and a set of bits for it;
  3. welding machine;
  4. grinder with a metal disc;
  5. roulette;
  6. level;
  7. marker, pencil;
  8. steel strips;
  9. upholstery fabric;
  10. foam;
  11. furniture stapler;
  12. construction hairdryer.

Depending on the design of the do-it-yourself lift-up bed, you may need different fastenings. The most commonly used is:

  • Self-tapping screws are not ordinary, but phosphated. They have a rough surface and adhesion to the glued surface is much stronger. It is better to choose a diameter of no more than 6 millimeters, and the length should be equal to the sum of the thickness of the parts that it connects minus 10 mm.
  • Metal corners - here it is better to opt for parts with a rounded wide stiffener rib. There should be no burrs on such fasteners - this is the first sign of overtightened metal.
  • Nails 60-70 mm with a ring notch.
  • Some craftsmen use dowels when assembling a raised bed with their own hands, but it is better to replace them with dowels. They provide a more durable and reliable connection of parts.

Before you make a bed with a lifting mechanism with your own hands, also stock up on a clamp. It will provide density and strength to both individual joints and the structure as a whole.

Design and mechanism

A quick glance at any photo of a bed with a lifting mechanism with your own hands is enough to understand that it is a wardrobe with a “folding bed” built into it. The design of a lift-up bed with your own hands consists of a base and a frame, which is fixed to the wall. Vertical and horizontal position is achieved using a lifting mechanism. It can be of three types:

  • The manual lifting mechanism is the most accessible and simplest. It has no shock absorbers or springs. Ideal for a bed for adults, since when opening the box you need to make a lot of effort, children cannot cope with such a load. The main advantage is strength and durability.
  • The spring mechanism will also not cause owners much trouble. But it has a main drawback - the springs quickly wear out and stretch. Therefore, its service life is from 3 to 5 years. Then the springs will require replacement. The big advantage of this mechanism is the price, which is relatively small. Thanks to this, springs are in great demand among those who are going to install a bed with a lifting mechanism with their own hands.
  • The gas shock absorber is the most convenient, reliable, durable mechanism. It works smoothly, silently, with virtually no human intervention. Service life with daily use is up to 10 years. Such a device should be selected based on the size of the frame. The mechanism on gas shock absorbers is expensive, but at the same time, in demand. It is also ideal for a double bed with a DIY lift mechanism, as this option is more durable and durable.

Construction of a drawing

An attempt to implement everything at once - without drawings, competent calculations, preliminary preparation and markings - leads to damage to the material due to constant changes in the design of the product. Therefore, after preparing the necessary tools and materials, we sit down to make drawings of a bed with a lifting mechanism. It is worth knowing the following nuances:

  • The height of the legs, sides and the height of the part of the mattress protruding above the sides is the total height of the sleeping place, on which the depth of the cabinet structure depends. Usually it is about 450 millimeters - it’s comfortable to sit down.
  • If the mechanism has a thickness of 32 millimeters, then the gaps between the sides of the bed and the sides of the cabinet will be 32 millimeters on each side.
  • Accordingly, the calculation takes into account the width of the bed, the thickness of the sides of the base, the gaps for installing the mechanism and the thickness of the sides of the cabinet.
  • When creating a bed with a lifting mechanism with your own hands, we also determine in the drawing the location of the beam on the back and drawer. Here the calculation is as follows. If the mattress is in a lounger, then the distance from the upper edge of the side is the sum of 30–50 mm and the thickness of the bottom - boards or a sheet of plywood. If the mattress is on top, then the indentation will be the thickness of the flooring.

Important! Before making a bed with a lifting mechanism with your own hands, do not forget to not only create a place to work, but also remove the baseboard along the wall to which the furniture will adjoin.

Main works

Any do-it-yourself lifting bed consists of a supporting frame. In order to make it, you will need wooden beams. It is better to take a thickness of 50 by 50 millimeters. The outer part includes the headboard, footboard and sides, which the professionals call drawers. The frame is covered with boards, slats or a sheet of plywood - this is how the bottom of the future berth is created.

The process of assembling a bed with a lifting mechanism with your own hands consists of the following steps:

  • We prepare the back and sides; their maximum thickness should be no more than 40 millimeters. Even before starting work, we make an edge on these blanks.
  • We cut out drawers from ordinary, best planed, boards. Their thickness is 40-60 millimeters, width - no more than 200 millimeters.

Important! It is better to paint or varnish these parts at the preparatory stage.

  • Treat the timber that we will use for the frame with an antiseptic to protect the wood from the marks of time. We determine their dimensions at the stage of drawing, and they depend on your parameters that you have already measured.
  • Do-it-yourself corner joints for a lift-up bed will face the most important task. They will withstand the main load. Therefore, duplicate the fasteners in these places. Connect the backs and sides with dowels, and choose the bars in quarters.
  • Drill holes for fasteners, in particular for dowels, in advance. When connecting parts to each other, even with self-tapping screws, additionally strengthen all joints with glue and hold with a clamp for 24 hours.

Important! All holes that are made when assembling a bed with a lifting mechanism with your own hands are blind. Through drilling is not permitted.

  • After the beam is securely glued and secured with self-tapping screws, do preliminary assembly. The backrests are installed vertically, on temporary supports, then the sidewalls are applied. Afterwards, be sure to check how straight the corners of the structure are.
  • Then tie the structure with a rope, and on the backs with a pencil mark holes for dowels - 2 per end. Then the drawers are removed, holes are made in the backs, and the holes are smeared with some kind of coloring compound - at least a felt-tip pen. Connect the drawers and backs again so that the space for the counter part of the hole is imprinted on the side boards. Disassemble the future lifting bed with your own hands and drill holes in the drawers for holes.
  • Coat the holes on the sides with glue, insert dowels into the holes and hold them in place with a clamp. Then assemble the bed on the dowels, that is, place the backrest on the pins in the drawers and move it with a mallet until it fits tightly. At the same time, also lubricate the frame quarters with glue.
  • Tie the frame with three turns of rope. To create a tight tension between the rope and the bed, insert pieces of pipe, wood, etc. The rope should be very tight. The product remains in this position for 2-4 days.
  • Drill holes for the dowels in the frame, and install them with glue. The covering is not removed. After drying, the corner fastenings are duplicated with metal corners.

Important! In a design with backs, legs are not needed, since it rests on the headboard and footboard, but if desired, they can be installed by attaching them to a timber frame.

  • Secure the flooring from boards 20 mm thick and 80-100 mm wide with glue and nails. For each edge - 2 nails.

Important! If a slatted bottom is purchased, then the lag holders are distributed along the frame, and the slats are fixed in them.

As you can see, solving the question of how to make a bed with a lifting mechanism with your own hands is not as simple as it might seem at first glance. Allow 2-3 days in advance for this work, which will be needed not only for installation, but also for drying the joints.

Double bed

A do-it-yourself double bed with a lifting mechanism is created using the same scheme. But there is one caveat: since the structure must withstand double load, it must be reinforced with a spar. This is a longitudinal bundle of boards 40 by 100 millimeters:

  • If necessary, you can make not 1, but 3 spars at once, placing them evenly throughout the structure.
  • This bracket is attached with glue and nails - 2 nails on each side diagonally. For greater strength, it is worth duplicating such joints with steel corners.
  • A part such as a spar must form a single plane with the frame. The angles at which it is located must also be perfectly even.

Installation of the mechanism

Raising a bed with your own hands is not a simple and painstaking process, it consists of several important stages. After assembling the frame and bed, you need to install the lifting mechanism on the bed with your own hands:

  1. Mark the mounting locations on the box and drill holes.
  2. Secure the lower part of the mechanism with bolts.
  3. Install the corner of the device to the frame of the structure.
  4. Lower the base of the product inside the bed frame and mark 4 holes on each side of the frame so that they correspond to the bottom bar of the mechanism.
  5. Open the frame and drill holes in it.
  6. Secure the top bar of the mechanism with 4 screws so that there is sufficient clearance between the frame and the box for its operation.

Important! After installing the lifting mechanism on the bed with your own hands is completed, its operation should be carefully checked and, if necessary, adjusted. During installation, it is important to consider that the elevator attachment points must be securely held by the eye with a bolt. The installation must be done in such a way that the fittings can be operated freely, and movement up and down can be done without difficulty.

Additional frame

The strength of any DIY bed with a lifting mechanism can be increased using a specially made steel frame. For bed sizes ranging from double and larger, this is just as important as for beds of non-standard shape:

  • The frame of the lifting bed is made with your own hands from the same steel profile as the lifting mechanism, or a slightly larger section. Overall dimensions must be pre-designed in accordance with the design; sawing the profile into blanks is carried out using a grinder. The parts are connected with a neat weld.
  • It is imperative to install transverse posts between the longitudinal and transverse elements at the corners of their connection, which will add strength to the structure and prevent it from collapsing under loads during operation.

Sheathing

When the do-it-yourself lifting bed design is ready, it needs to be sheathed. This is done in order to:

  • hide frame and frame elements;
  • get a comfortable and soft bed;
  • give the furniture an aesthetic appearance.

Here's how this work works:

  1. First of all, lay sheet foam rubber on the base - determine the optimal number of layers yourself.
  2. Cover it with upholstery material on top. It can be not only fabric, but also leatherette or leather.
  3. Attach the upholstery to the frame of the lift-up bed with your own hands using a furniture stapler: its steel staples are firmly driven into the base, but at the same time remain unnoticeable on the upholstery, so they do not spoil the appearance of the furniture.
  4. Also, do not forget to cover the sides of the bed with decorative material.
  5. Thus, if you understand the instructions, then even making such a complex piece of furniture as a bed with a lifting mechanism with your own hands will be a completely feasible task. So don’t rush to spend money on a store-bought product - with some effort and time, you can get an equally attractive model, but several times cheaper.
