Appearing more than a hundred years ago, this industrial interior design is still relevant today. You can decorate an office, store, restaurant or apartment in a loft style - and it will be fashionable. In addition, such an interior is comfortable, practical, looks original, and in such a room it is easier to organize joint work of employees.

Who would suit an office in an industrial loft style? Creative companies, studios, the majority of whose employees are young and ambitious, free and liberated. It’s easy to create something new in a loft office, because employees are surrounded by a creative environment.

A loft-style office is perfect for creative companies

What's good about a loft? It allows you to combine seemingly unsuitable objects, uniting them into a single space. To create such an interior, you need to understand the features of this design direction:

  1. Space. The room should not have blank monolithic walls, partitions, nooks, even glass ones. Free space is what you need.
  2. High ceilings and large windows.
  3. Elements of industrial design, demonstrative openness of communications, which are used as decorative details.
  4. Combination of different textures and different styles of objects.
  5. Minimum amount of furniture.
  6. A variety of the latest technical innovations.

Loft style is always space for creativity

Office in loft style (photo interesting design solutions and original finds are presented in the gallery) does not require capital investments if equipped in the right place:

  • in the basement or attic;
  • in an industrial building;
  • in the office area.

Loft - the ideal style for former industrial buildings

In this case, minimal renovation is necessary to creatively transform the existing space. In the new premises you will have to create stylish imitations.

How to decorate walls, ceiling and floor

  1. Loft-style walls give the impression of being deliberately carelessly finished, roughly processed.

Attention! Brickwork and concrete surfaces look ideal.

Brick walls are an integral attribute of loft style

Terracotta bricks can be distressed or painted white or gray. The combination of concrete and bricks on different walls looks great. Design options for a loft-style concrete wall:

  • the concrete is applied unevenly and loosely, emphasizing the texture of the finish;
  • the concrete wall is painted white, gray, brick, turquoise, black;
  • the wall is given the appearance of an antique, it is covered with cracks and stains.

It’s good if the room already has brick and concrete walls. Then all that remains is to clean them from dust and treat them with a colorless protective varnish. If the room is new, the walls are covered with a layer of concrete or brickwork is created by laying imitation tiles. Old communications (batteries, water supply and ventilation pipes) are restored and used for their intended purpose.

An interesting solution is to highlight one wall by decorating it with wood-look wall panels.

  1. The design of the ceiling follows the traditions of industrial design: wiring and utilities are not hidden, and air conditioning pipes run under the ceiling. The tradition of the loft style requires that the ceilings be high, like in factory workshops. If the ceiling is not high, then you can decorate it with a grille that imitates an air intake, and also integrate LED lighting there. Beams - metal and wood - fit perfectly into the interior. Plasterboard structures combined with lighting equipment are also used.

Open wiring and utilities on the ceiling are a classic in industrial design

  1. You can choose any material for the flooring, the main thing is to maintain a cool gray-brown color scheme. So, the floors can be:
  • wooden (leading in popularity);
  • cork with abrasions;
  • liquid decorative;
  • concrete;
  • from ceramic tiles.

Floors combined from different materials look interesting. In this way, the general office space can be easily zoned into areas for employees, a guest area and a rest area.

  1. Industrial design ideas are also embodied in lighting, where a variety of lamps are used:
  • imitating kerosene lanterns;
  • spider chandeliers with rotating elements;
  • American vintage lanterns with folding accordion mechanism;
  • spotlights;
  • Edison lamps made of brass;
  • in high-tech style made of chromed metal;
  • with frosted glass lampshades.

Lamps are suspended from the ceiling and lowered down on bundles of wires, an elongated rod, rods or folding structures.

The main principle of selecting lighting fixtures is unusualness and man-made features.

  1. Even in the office you need accessories. They could be:
  • a large clock or many small wall clocks;
  • abstract paintings;
  • lush vegetation in tubs;
  • graffiti;
  • posters.

Graffiti is an excellent option for decorating walls in youth and creative companies

There is not much interior decor in an industrial style, but it is defiantly bright.

It is necessary to have all kinds of equipment. Computers, TVs, air conditioners - all this creates a special working atmosphere.

Office furniture in loft style

The loft style organically uses furniture from such design trends as modern, high-tech, classic, and Scandinavian style. Furniture items that fit perfectly into the interior:

  • made of frosted or transparent glass;
  • metal, slightly tinted with patina, chrome, brass;
  • forged;
  • wooden, primarily from rough boards;
  • made of MDF and chipboard, imitating the texture of wood.

However, there are several conditions that must be met:

  • furniture should not be deliberately new, it is better to artificially age wooden objects;
  • furniture should have clear shapes;
  • Light, elegant objects are not suitable - furniture products should look solid and impressive;
  • openness of furniture facades - a loft is characterized by the absence of doors in cabinets and cabinets, shelves and racks are usually not covered with glass;
  • Drawers and boxes are used to store things.

Nuance! Loft furniture does not accept decorative excesses in the form of bright enamel or mosaic inserts, wood carvings, or complex fittings. Simplicity and reliability are the main features.

Loft furniture is devoid of decorative details

Another important feature of loft style furniture is that it is equipped with wheels. Not just work chairs or tables, but even cabinets. This gives the furniture mobility, allowing it to be easily moved throughout the office area.

Wheels are a convenient and practical element of office furniture

Furniture in the office can be one color, then it is better to use the following colors:

  • metallic silver;
  • grey;
  • beige;
  • terracotta;
  • brick;
  • white.

Black, olive, and blue are welcome in small quantities. At the same time, an office filled with dissimilar pieces of furniture, painted in different colors and artificially aged, looks interesting.

Office interior in loft style

The loft style tends to minimize the number of furniture items. Therefore, you should not fill your office with many tables, chairs, and sofas. Only what is really necessary is the principle of selecting furniture products.

Each employee must be provided with a minimum amount of furniture, providing him with a desk and chair. When setting up an office, you can use one of the options when purchasing furniture:

  • purchase modular structures - of the same type, one color;
  • select items from different styles and eras.

In the latter case, antique stores and flea markets will help, as well as advertisements for the sale of second-hand furniture.

Modular furniture designs are the easiest way to furnish an office

Important! In this case, it is necessary to carefully select items that, despite their heterogeneity, should be in harmony with each other. This is what gives the stunning effect of the loft style.

A resting place for employees or a guest area can be equipped with a sofa, armchairs, and a coffee table. For a loft style interior you will need a huge comfortable sofa, its upholstery is done:

  • from a plain, dense fabric that matches the color scheme of the room;
  • made of leatherette, even better, made of genuine leather;
  • from suede.

The sofa should not look brand new; in this case, minor scuffs are welcome. You will need a lot of chairs so that there is enough space for everyone. The following are used as single seats:

  • office metal chairs;
  • non-standard original designer chairs;
  • forged benches;
  • chairs and armchairs wicker from rattan or wicker;
  • deep fabric retro chairs;
  • even simple wooden boxes.

A coffee table can be either large or tiny, the main thing is that it is practical and comfortable. To store documents and work materials, you will need racks, cabinets, drawers, chests of drawers - wooden or metal. The administrative area is decorated with a counter made of glass, chromed metal or polished granite.

Furniture in the office can not only be placed along the walls, but also experimented by placing it at different angles, achieving maximum comfort for all employees.

  • What are the features of loft-style office design?
  • How to decorate the walls, floor and ceiling in a loft-style office
  • How to create an office interior in loft style
  • What furniture should be in a loft style office

Who would suit a loft-style office in Moscow? Creative studios and companies. It will appeal to young, ambitious employees who are free and relaxed. The original loft office setting will serve as a source of inspiration for them. In such an atmosphere, employees come together more easily to work together. This is because this interior is not only unusual, but also comfortable and practical. The loft style looks fashionable not only in the office, but also when decorating an apartment, store or restaurant. Surprisingly, such industrial interior design has remained relevant for more than a hundred years.

Features of loft-style office design and the history of the style

Perhaps you have heard about Andy Warhol's famous "Factory"? This was the first loft created at the beginning of the last century in New York. At that time, many businesses moved from the SoHo area to the suburbs. The old buildings were empty for a long time, and then this space was chosen by artists. They created a gallery, a workshop, and a place to live in one room at the same time. Thus, the Factory became the creative center of New York and a venue for public events.

Industrial buildings soon became fashionable in Europe. Wealthy citizens and local magnates, thirsting for originality and novelty, liked such an unusual and strict style. And only in the late 90s the loft style became popular in Russia.

The loft style is widely used in the design of offices, cafes and restaurants, as well as residential buildings and apartments. A characteristic feature of the style is the creation of a specific industrial atmosphere.

Even a small loft-style office should become as bright and spacious as possible. Although table lamps on work desks will not be superfluous.

Another important touch is the combination of old elements with new ones.

Really old or artificially aged parts are equally suitable. For example, if a layer of plaster has crumbled in an office or an old pipeline is visible, such elements should be left. The loft style is a harmony in the combination of sparkling modern materials and old elements. Therefore, chrome or glass parts and modern technology are added to a room with concrete or brick walls. This environment will be perfectly complemented by ordinary plank floors.

Taking into account who the room is being decorated for, you can create a suitable atmosphere: expensive and respectable, warm and friendly, or strict and restrained. Taking this into account, individual furnishing details are selected: pieces of furniture, color scheme, etc. Therefore, the loft style can look completely different.

In a room decorated in a loft style, the ceilings are always high and the windows are large to keep it light. The windows are suitable for frames made of plastic or metal in characteristic colors: brown, black, etc. The space should be made open. And all partitions need to be removed. However, if wiring or pipes are visible in the room, these are characteristic details of the style that must be preserved.

To give integrity to the picture being created, it is important that specific elements look old. For example, surfaces: ceiling, walls, floor. The amount of furniture in the interior is kept minimal. So, even the most ordinary office can be decorated in a loft style without any special industrial sites.

Coordination of work

The office can be decorated with a wall clock of a suitable design. For example, with chrome hands and numbers. A creative solution would be to hang posters and signs with slogans, preferably from Soviet times.

At the same time, the loft style is quite complex. And to ensure that the office environment is not only unusual, but also attractive, you should turn to professional designers.

To decorate an office in a loft style, you first need to get rid of partitions and walls that are not load-bearing. Such an office is always distinguished by its spaciousness. It is possible to place small partitions between work tables. Thus, you get a spacious room, and also relieve workers from the need to run around offices.

Office renovation in loft style: decoration of walls, floor and ceiling

  • The walls of a loft-style office should give the impression of being distinctly careless and roughly finished.

Brickwork and concrete surfaces look impeccable.

Terracotta bricks can be painted white or gray, or artificially aged. An office with a combination of walls of different coverings (concrete and bricks) looks interesting.

Design options for a concrete wall in a loft style:

  1. The texture of the finish is highlighted by the loose and uneven application of concrete;
  2. The concrete wall is painted in white, gray, brick, turquoise, black;
  3. The wall is artificially aged, creating stains and cracks.

The office walls are covered with concrete or brickwork is created on their surface (using imitation tiles). Provided that the room initially has concrete and brick walls, they are only cleaned and covered with protective varnish. Old pipes and batteries are restored, after which they can be used for their intended purpose.

A creative solution would be to cover one of the walls with wood-look panels.

  • The office ceiling should also correspond to the industrial style: wiring and old communications are open, air conditioning pipes are visible.

One of the traditional elements of the loft style is a high ceiling. What to do if your office has a low ceiling? In this case, it is decorated with a grille that imitates an air intake. The backlight is also built into it. Any beams, wooden or metal, perfectly complement the interior of a loft-style office. Often, plasterboard structures combined with lighting equipment are used in the design.

  • Any material is suitable for office flooring. The main condition is to keep it in a cool, gray-brown tones.

Floor options:

  1. Wooden (the most popular option);
  2. Cork with a worn effect;
  3. Liquid decorative;
  4. Concrete;
  5. Made from ceramic tiles.

One of the practical solutions of the loft style when decorating an office is the visual division of space into zones: work, guest and relaxation. This is done by combining different flooring materials.

Designing the workspace of employees in the office in a loft style

An example of a loft-style office design (photo):

To create the interior of a loft office, the best type of design is in the form of a single large and open room. The organization of the workspace is carried out by combining modern elements in such an unusual setting.

Such design solutions can be divided into the following groups:

  1. The location of workplaces in a single space without walls, corridors and halls.
  2. The division into different zones is carried out thanks to:

    Differences in floor surface levels in different areas of activity;

    Various types of areas, the finishing of which uses materials characteristic of the loft style, such as brick, plaster, wood, etc.;

    Decorating with pieces of furniture specific to a specific work area;

    Small partitions, columns, transparent dividing screens, etc.

  3. Using different furniture to delimit zones according to their purpose.
  4. Furniture items must be of high quality, practical and comfortable, as well as creating suitable conditions for office employees. In this case, a certain nonsense or appearance does not matter. An office owner or designer can choose absolutely any items to suit their taste. There are also no rules when it comes to the location of different zones. The space for relaxation can be located either next to the work tables or near the bar counter.

  5. The loft style helps create the image of the organization, reflects its status and well-being.
  6. When decorating an office, rough materials are necessarily used. However, this does not mean that they may be of poor quality. On the contrary, the processing and finishing of any materials must be first-class. Following the tradition of the loft style, some interior details need to be aged. Therefore, if the room initially has old finishing, radiators, pipes or ventilation, this is considered a huge plus. In this case, they can be cleaned well enough and can be used for their intended purpose.

Office interior in loft style

Designers are not always able to freely manipulate interior elements. Some changes may require special permission. But original building elements included in the composition, such as steel stairs or freight elevators, add uniqueness to the room and become an ideal backdrop for details made of glass, metal or raw concrete.

Good designers are quite capable of stylizing rooms in modern buildings. It is possible to decorate even a small office in a loft style. The main thing is not to forget that industrial design is incompatible with small separate rooms. Therefore, you should get rid of all sorts of partitions and additional walls. Then, with the help of details, give the interior an industrial character. Open, deliberately exposed cables, pipes, ventilation parts or wooden floors will allow you to plunge into the loft atmosphere.

The correct use of color focal points will help to visually enlarge your office. The combination of light walls and dark floors creates the appearance of a high ceiling. Loft interior involves the use of neutral shades - light brown or gray. At the same time, red brick walls will look great in such an environment.

Bright colors create accents and add liveliness to the workspace. To achieve this, the industrial loft style uses the colors that safety signs in enterprises are usually painted in: yellow, red, green, orange. Turquoise or cobalt blue will also look good.

With the help of proper lighting in the office, a working mood is created. The best options would be: technical top and side lights, metal lampshades (lattice or solid), as well as cable lamps. Both modern and retro models are equally suitable.

Surprisingly, the loft style does not tolerate decorations. The room should contain a minimum of things and objects, including furniture. You may feel that the interior will become too empty. However, it is not. Photos of a big city or large graphics will create a lively creative atmosphere. Think about what masterpieces of modern art inspire you? Maybe these are works by Mark Rothko or Jackson Pollock?

Office furniture in loft style

Look at an example of a loft style in an office interior (photo).

A loft-style office is always furnished with practical furniture. At the same time, you need to remember about comfort.

As a rule, when designing a loft, items such as:

  1. Chairs. A comfortable workplace is the most important condition for any office, because the performance and productivity of employees directly depends on it.
  2. Upholstered furniture for the recreation area. These can be different types of sofas and armchairs (shapeless or hammock-shaped). Any, even the most exotic pieces of furniture are welcome.
  3. The basic principle of loft office design is minimalism. On the other hand, this does not mean that the decor should look too simple and modest. The second, no less important principle of the industrial style is modernity. “Smart” furniture is perfect for such an unusual style.
  4. Ultra-modern pieces of furniture look perfect in a loft-style interior.
  5. Typical materials used in the manufacture of furniture: chrome, leather, wood, plastic, metal.

An office with a loft interior is a personal area, often with elements of chic. Usually the owner wants to install expensive furniture and items made of natural wood. This can cause some difficulties, since such luxury is permissible provided that it appears unintentional. At the same time, there will be much more opportunities when choosing interior elements.

The clients represent an agency that solves creative problems every day, so the main goal of the architect was to create a modern office that would set the right mood and inspire fresh ideas. The ideal space for creativity was the empty workshop of the former calico printing factory, built in 1820. High ceilings, large windows, old rough-textured wooden floors, clinker brick walls became the starting point for creating a design project in the loft style.

The customers wanted to emphasize the scale and historical character of the building, but at the same time dilute the vintage style with modern details. “The wall with two large windows was covered with plasterboard. I wanted to “open” it and find out what they were trying to hide there. It turned out that the tiles that were often used in industrial premises of the last century were preserved on the wall. I suggested that the customers leave everything as is, or paint it a uniform color, keeping only the outlines. We agreed on the first option, and I just decorated the window openings with oak slopes and a window sill to create comfort,” says Alexey.

Do you want clients to flock to your office like doves to a dovecote? An office in style is the solution to the problem! Why? After all, loft in English means “attic”, “dovecote”. Many private entrepreneurs and owners of rental premises have become convinced of the attractive power of such offices for clients. Of course, the name has nothing to do with it. In fact, clients are attracted by the unusual flavor of the loft office.

Why does a loft-style office have such enchanting magnetism? What does such an office even look like? And if you want to make renovations in this style, won’t it cost you a pretty penny? Let's try to understand these issues.

"Unshaven" office

The fashionable style now is brutality in everything. Carelessness in clothes, imitation of unironed trousers, three days of unshavenness, deliberately uncombed hair - and you are the most stylish person in the team. Such trends have not bypassed the design of premises. Offices of companies that deal with clients and want to amaze them with a unique interior choose loft-style design.

And it all started not with fashion, but with production necessity. A little less than a hundred years ago, at the beginning of its existence, the loft came into being when abandoned factories, industrial enterprises and even prisons were converted into offices and living quarters.

Nowadays, to create a loft it is not necessary to use a warehouse or factory. You can take any apartment and remove all partitions if possible. You can artificially age some materials. Three-day stubble is actually the result of careful care for a growing beard. Likewise, the loft style is not the result of the absence of a cleaner in your office, but a carefully developed and executed design.

A loft interior can make yours a landmark in a neighborhood or even a city. Young people or people of creative professions especially like this style. After all, it reflects their lifestyle: freedom and originality. Therefore, if you have an art group, you should think about renovating in a loft style. But isn't such a renovation too expensive compared to other interior styles?

How to make a loft inexpensively

A loft is characterized by a large amount of free space. Pipes, brick walls, concrete floors are not hidden, but emphasized. Elements of old and new are combined. For example, furniture and electrical appliances can be in high-tech style, but retro furniture is also perfect.

A brick wall can be either natural, well restored, or an imitation of brickwork.
Some essential features of a loft:

  • high ceilings and huge windows;
  • lack of offices (the space can, if desired, be divided only by low partitions);
  • a combination of modern and retro finishing materials;
  • engineering systems, such as electrical wiring or heating, are not hidden (if desired, you can partially hide communications by covering them with plasterboard);
  • minimalism in the amount of furniture (this saves money!).

An original addition to the style are posters and signs typical of factories or industrial garages, as well as road signs or graffiti. For example: “You can’t park here.” And for the post-Soviet space, slogans like “glory to labor” can become a decoration. If you don't like posters, you can use paintings by abstract artists. But these design elements need to be used in moderation.

If the renovation is carried out without artificially aging the materials, then its cost will be quite low compared to the renovation of an office cabinet system. If you have old radiators, ventilation and water pipes, it’s easy to create a loft interior: just clean these design elements perfectly.

Don’t forget that the brutality of the loft is feigned, it only creates the appearance of sloppiness. In fact, everything should be carefully sanded and coated with a protective varnish.

That is why an awkward-looking office will be a cozy and desirable place to work for the entire team. How else does the loft atmosphere affect office workers?

In addition to creative design and an abundance of curious clients, by choosing a loft-style office, you get another benefit. An office without offices or partitions makes all workers accessible to each other. Time is saved when walking from office to office in order to clarify any production issue.

The feeling of freedom and spread wings in the presence of a huge free space stimulates workers to be creative in their work. Inspiration will settle in your office forever. And a lunch break can easily turn into a corporate party.

American industrialists of the middle of the last century, renting out only slightly converted premises of empty factories and factories as cheap housing, hardly felt like the founders of a new style in interior design.

Nevertheless, the gloomy simplicity of smoky workshops, warehouses and workshops, contrary to all expectations, appealed not only to poor students and artists, but also to high society bohemia.

The latter, tired of the invariably chic, seemingly combed and ironed environment, initially used the abandoned industrial area for parties and avant-garde shows, and then moved to live here altogether, completely displacing students and artists.

The new style began to be called briefly and succinctly - Loft, which translated from English means “attic”.

In our country, Loft was “tried” quite recently and most of the out-of-the-box lovers of new and unusual solutions liked it. We'll talk about how Loft manifests itself in different environments.

Following the main traditions of the style, the loft office is transformed from a set of cramped closets into one huge space with high ceilings and panoramic windows.

This organization of workspace today is called Open Office or Coworking, while employees of one or several different companies can be located in a combined room.

The maximum that can be allowed in the design of an office loft is the installation of low partitions that delimit the space into “cubes”. Neo from the legendary “Matrix” worked in one of these “cubes”.

All the attributes of a classic loft - unplastered brick, beams and cast-iron stairs, as well as powerful ventilation ducts laid openly along the walls - are welcome in the office.

Design of a restaurant and cafe in a loft style

A non-standard creative environment that creates the illusion of a parallel world is the key to the success of any public establishment where people come to relax and have a snack. From this point of view, the loft seems to be a very effective solution.

Three rules of a loft in a restaurant remain unchanged:
  • space;
  • lack of finishing on brick or concrete walls (imitation is allowed);
  • communications and supporting structures exposed.

A loft-style restaurant is not divided into banquet and dining rooms: both areas are parts of one room. To separate them, you can use furniture, translucent partitions or a specially selected type of lighting.

Restaurant furniture in the loft style is characterized by functionality and minimalism. But these concepts should not be confused with excessive modesty.

Ultra-modern or vintage furniture fits best into a loft. A restrained and calm color palette with a well-defined emphasis on one of the tones is welcome.

The most suitable materials for loft style furniture are chromed metal and glass.

Restaurants, bars and similar places are evening establishments; the bulk of visitors flock here after dark. Therefore, such a characteristic Loft technique as huge floor-to-ceiling windows becomes ineffective here.

The natural in the restaurant is replaced with a set of strict, monotonous ones, suspended by means of long strings or brackets at a low height.

The design of a restaurant in a loft style somewhat limits the designer, forcing him to shift the emphasis towards universal solutions. This is due to the diversity and level of the public visiting enterprises of this kind.

The design of a cafe as a more youthful establishment can be much more bold and extravagant.

A stylized and expressive interior predominates here, and the columns, trusses and rough boards on the floor that are characteristic of the Loft can, due to lack of space, be purely symbolic.

Apartments

In the apartments of our compatriots, the loft is still rather timidly represented, mainly because most of our city apartments have nothing to do with the concept of space. However, the new style is attracting more and more interest among fans of unusual design.

The standard solution in our conditions is to create a studio - a relatively large room that combines a kitchen and a living room.

An apartment loft largely contradicts traditional concepts of comfort. Instead of bulky luxury furniture, it is customary to install light, functional items that take up as little space as possible.

At the same time, the loft setting is completely opposite to the usual home one: armchairs and sofas have a chassis and are installed at a distance from the walls. Sofas with “variable geometry” and anything that emphasizes the inconsistency characteristic of a loft are considered traditional.

A classic of a home loft, like any other, is considered to be brickwork that does not have a plaster finish. In panel and concrete houses, it can be imitated or replaced with an alternative - a conspicuous rough concrete surface and the same floors.

We must not forget about utility networks, which, as visual propaganda, are demonstratively laid in the most visible place. Of course, in old houses such elements will have to be imitated with sections of pipes and ventilation ducts, as if protruding from the walls.

These simple techniques will help you recreate in your home that same loft that has been winning the hearts of millions around the world for more than 50 years.
