A bed is a simple and banal piece of furniture that is found in almost every home. At first glance, it does not represent a complex structure, the choice of which may pose any difficulties, but is it so? In fact, modern beds are distinguished by a fairly wide variety of possible configurations and additional functions, the understanding of which can have a very significant impact on your health and well-being. So is it worth trusting such an important part of our life as sleep to the first bed of dubious quality that comes along? We will try to understand all the nuances and choose a bed that is modern and comfortable

A high double bed with solid side drawers will always look impressive and squat in the interior, a model from the Bolzan Letti brand

So, the bed, as a rule, consists of a frame (it includes side drawers, a headboard and supports), which performs a more decorative function and is called upon, and a base, which is a support for the mattress. The base of the bed is usually a lattice or frame attached to the frame. A bed frame, a mattress, a properly selected one - these are the three main components responsible for the comfort of your sleep, the choice of which should be approached with the utmost care.

Memo: The optimal height of a European bed is considered to be 50 cm (usually just below the knee); low beds “on the floor” are typical for interiors in the Japanese style and its modern variations. It should be remembered that beds that are too low may not be comfortable for older people, people with knee or spinal injuries, etc.

Orthopedic beds with slats

Older beds usually had a base made of a single sheet of plywood, which prevented normal air circulation in the mattress, or a metal mesh that tended to sag in the center and create an unhealthy spinal position. Modern beds are designed differently.

The base of the bed these days is usually divided into separate slats - lamellas (second name: “armor”), made of plastic or bent-laminated wood (birch - in more budget models, beech or poplar - in expensive ones). Individual slats only seem fragile, because each of them can withstand a weight of up to 40 kg, so the entire structure of the bed turns out to be very durable. The design of the bed with slats has a peculiar springing effect that ensures the correct position of the spine, reduces the load on the mattress and provides it with the necessary air circulation.

Main properties and characteristics of lamellas:

  • the more slats at the base of the bed, the longer the service life of the bed
  • for a double bed the recommended number of slats arranged in two rows is more than 30, for a single bed - more than 15 pieces
  • the distance between the slats should not be greater than the width of one plank (about 53 - 68 mm)
  • The smaller the distance between the lamellas, the greater the load the base can withstand, which should be taken into account by users with heavy weights
  • the thickness of one lamella is on average 8 mm, and the length depends on the dimensions of the bed itself
  • for reliability, modern double beds usually have 6 legs (4 in the corners, and 2 in the center), in single beds, respectively, 5 legs

Memo: You should definitely take into account that an orthopedic bed base is required if you are planning to purchase an orthopedic mattress, so as not to nullify all its beneficial health effects.

Nowadays you can often come across the phrase “orthopedic beds”; what does this mean in practice? An ordinary orthopedic bed is a steel frame with slats attached to it, and when installed, the slats bend slightly upward, straightening back under the weight of a person. Due to this, and also due to the fact that the wood fibers in them are located in one direction, the already mentioned “spring effect” is created, which has a beneficial effect on the spine. An orthopedic base is usually a separate structure that can be hidden inside any decorative frame, thus fitting into the interior of a bedroom in any style. At the same time, if you purchase a base with supports, you can use the bed without an additional frame, hiding the metal legs, for example, behind a bedspread hanging with beautiful draperies.

Memo: In order for the base of the bed to serve you longer, you should not place heavy objects on the very edge (at least 10 cm from the edge), and during transportation it is strictly not recommended to rearrange the bed by holding the slats.

Adjustable orthopedic bases

What other pleasant and useful features do modern orthopedic beds have? Some of them are equipped with an electric drive and a remote control, allowing you to change the angle of the headboard, the position of the legs and the lumbar section of the bed. However, most convertible double beds have both sections that can be adjusted separately, and some models also include a massager built into the base to help you relax after a long day at work.

Additional protection for the mattress and slats - a special cover for the bed base, Demaflex

Advice: The ability to customize the bed can be very useful, for example, it can be used to increase the rigidity of the structure under the lumbar spine or elevate the legs to increase blood flow, which promotes relaxation after physical activity.

In addition to these kinds of additional bonuses, which can be equipped with a completely ordinary orthopedic bed, today you can purchase a model with an alternative base design. Instead of lamellas, in this case there are flat square spring elements. The spring elements have a complex, well-ventilated design and adapt to the individual characteristics of your spine, while the rigidity of fixation of each of them is adjusted separately. This bed base can withstand a load of 130 kg.

Such bases have excellent therapeutic properties and many additional functions and settings, however, the cost of such a bed will be corresponding. In addition, for optimal installation and configuration of all elements, you will probably need the help of professionals, not only furniture assemblers, but also, possibly, your doctor.

Memo: Keep in mind that beds with lifts and drawers underneath the base may restrict air circulation and prevent the mattress from being ventilated.

You should not save on your own health, so you should approach the choice of bed base with the utmost seriousness; in addition, both the base and the mattress should be selected individually, and not be content with ready-made “store-bought” kits. Ideally, both the base and the mattress should be tested in person before purchasing, and it is advisable to choose products from the same manufacturer.

Lamels are flat, slightly curved wooden planks made of beech wood, which consist of several layers.
Usually there are 5 such layers, side view.

The lamellas differ in width; they are 35 mm (rare), 53 mm and 65 mm.
The distance between the installed slats in the frame can be anything, often it is: 25-30 mm, 45-55 mm, 70-80 mm.

Lamella 53 mm, distance 25-30 mm, the most optimal option.

Lamella 65 mm, distance 20-25 mm, reinforced version.

There are several types of fastenings: on flexible rubber hangers, inside a metal profile and on top of a metal profile (frame), the most popular option is the third.

This option for attaching the lamellas is the simplest, cheapest and most optimal; the lamellas are inserted into plastic pockets fixed to a metal frame. The only drawback is that the plastic pockets may have sharp edges that can ruin the mattress cover, but such a defect is extremely rare.

In the photo, the “top” method of attaching the slats (the pockets were attached by some kind of hand-crank)

Is it possible to break the slats?

It’s possible if you try really hard, but I couldn’t do it even though I tried.

For the purity of the experiment, we will use a living bed with slats (Venice Lux bed)

For such an experiment, a human leg is best; it is better to use someone else's leg, but I only had my own. We place our foot on the lamella, press it with force, waiting for a characteristic crack.

Contrary to expectations, the lamella did not break; it bent in the opposite direction and jumped out of the fastening.

We bend it in an arc; I managed to bend it about 20 cm in height. The lamellas can easily bear such loads.

It turns out that even with maximum loads, “bending” in one direction or another, it is difficult to break beech slats.
The defect that occurs most often is the delamination of the lamellas, the presence of knots/defects, or the bending of the lamella in the form of a propeller.

Bitch, I would even say bitch!

Propeller, one end of the lamella fits evenly to the table, the other end of the lamella does not fit very well

Why do you need a lamella frame?

We can talk for a long time about the benefits of such lamella blocks, but I see the advantage that these planks are able to take part of the load on themselves, thereby extending the service life of the spring block or springless filling of the mattress; the mattress is also well ventilated on the lamellas, and this is important moment in use of the mattress.

What to do if your leg/arm gets stuck between the slats?

I can’t imagine what needs to be done for this, but still, if this happens, then you will need the help of a more sober friend, otherwise you risk being “stuck” there together.
If a child somehow falls into such a “trap,” then simply bend the slats in different directions, one up, the other down, and remove the stuck part of the body.

How to replace a broken lamella?

Replacing a broken lamella is simple: bend it, squeezing it on both edges, and insert it into the mount. It may not work out the first time, but if you buy spare slats in our store, we will give you the opportunity to practice on our beds :)

What are the slats made of?

The slats are made of wood!
The main material is beech, sometimes birch (softer), and some pine (less durable).

I'll end with this.
If you have questions that you haven’t seen answered, write or call.

P.S. I don’t have a photo with my leg stuck between the slats.

A well-organized sleeping place ensures healthy, full sleep and good health while awake. It is not enough to simply buy a mattress with an orthopedic effect; you must choose the right base for it. An orthopedic bed base is a sleeping accessory that ensures the anatomically correct position of the sleeping person’s body.

Advantages and features of the orthopedic blood base

The bed base with slats serves to maximize the anatomical effect of the mattress. The mattress lattice can be used as an element built into the bed frame or as a separate sleeping bed.

The bed accessory has the following advantages:

  • hygiene of the sleeping place due to the free movement of air;
  • enhanced orthopedic effect, ensuring uniform distribution of the load on the body;
  • environmental safety through the use of natural materials;
  • high safety margin;
  • mobility and lightness.

Depending on the design features, orthopedic bed bases can withstand loads from 100 to 250 kilograms per bed.

Types of orthopedic bases with lamellas

Based on the dimensions of the bed, the orthopedic base for the mattress is divided into single and double models. Structurally, the base for a single bed consists of independent bent slats, fixed to the frame using lath holders. The double slatted bed base is equipped with an additional transverse rail that eliminates deflection and two rows of latoflexes.

The design of the mattress stand can be equipped with support legs and transformation mechanisms. Single stands have four legs, while double models have additional central legs.

Some models of mattress stands have the function of adjusting the hardness of individual zones. To regulate the degree of rigidity, the bases are equipped with special clamps that allow the slats to be connected.

The standard length of a mattress stand, which has gained the most popularity, is 2000 mm. The furniture market also offers less popular non-standard sizes - 2050, 2100 and 2200 mm. For children's and teenage beds, bars with a length of 1700 to 1900 mm are provided.

Standard grille width:

  • for a single bed – 700 mm;
  • for double models – 1200,1400,1600,1800,2000 mm.

How does a bed base frame with slats work?

A bed with an orthopedic base can have a metal or wooden frame. In addition to natural elasticity, wooden lamella frames are distinguished by their low weight and a large selection of modifications. The wall thickness of the metal frame is 1.2 or 1.5 mm. Metal frames are characterized by a longer service life and high strength. The service life of a metal frame reaches 20 years.

As a rule, metal bases are a welded one-piece structure. Therefore, metal frames are inferior to their wooden counterparts in terms of mobility.

The method of attaching the slats to the frame depends on the type of frame. Thus, in wooden structures, fastening is carried out using special holder tips attached to the frame using furniture staples or rivets. In metal models, special stands mounted into the frame are used to fix the slats.

Bed slats - what they are, selection rules

Curved slats or lamellas are elements made of natural laminated wood and located at a given distance from each other. The mechanism of action of the lamella frame is as follows: when the body presses on the mattress, the load is transferred to the curved lamellas, which, due to shock absorption, reduce the back pressure of the compressed mattress on the body of the sleeping person. The lattice design allows not only to correctly distribute the load on the human body, but also significantly extends the service life of the mattress.

Lamels for orthopedic bases are usually made from such tree species as:

  • birch.

Beech slats are characterized by high elastic qualities, which enhances the orthopedic effect of the bedding. The disadvantages of beech include the higher cost of the material.

Birch slats bend well, but the springy effect of birch slats is somewhat lower compared to their beech counterparts, since the wood is more rigid. But at the same time, the cost of birch lamellas is much less.

There are two main types of lamellas:

  • narrow - standard plate width is from 3 to 4 cm;
  • wide – the width of the lamellas is from 5 to 7 cm.

Bases with narrow slats belong to the upper-average price segment. The method of attaching narrow slats to the frame (via a slat holder) helps suppress squeaks and increase flexibility, due to which the slats better bear the load. Narrow slats work well with mattresses whose spring density varies from 200 to 1200 units per square meter.

Based on the method of fixation to the frame, wide lamellas are divided into overhead and mortise. The disadvantages of the latter include the appearance over time of creaks and deformations of the mattress covering surface at the junctions of the slats and the frame. The key advantage of wide slats is their affordable price.

In bed stands, the slatted components can be located at different distances relative to each other. How to choose an orthopedic bed base? The choice of lamella system directly depends on the type of mattress. For a springless bedding design, an orthopedic base with lamellas located at a distance of 5 cm from each other is suitable. For Pocket Spring spring mattresses, a frame with bent plates located at a distance of no more than 3 cm is required. For Bonnell mattresses, the distance between the bent slats is not of key importance.

When choosing the number of latoflexes in the slatted base, you should remember that the greater their number, the higher the flexibility and anatomical properties of the frame for the mattress. The most popular are bed bases with a number of slats from 26 to 30 units. The smaller the pitch of the lamellas, the longer the service life of the mattress.

Types of lathe holders in orthopedic bases

Latoflexes can be attached to the base frame using the following types of lato holders:

  • invoices;
  • mortise;
  • taking aim.

Overhead and mortise fasteners are designed for metal frames. Overheads are a fastening box equipped with two pins. Lat holders are put on each side of the bar and “clicked” into the base frame. Mortise elements for fastening battens are a box with a fixing rim.

Self-adjusting batten holders are used to attach slats to a wooden frame. The design includes a fastening box and a corner holder. The fittings are placed with the holder down on each side of the curved plank and secured to the wooden base using a stapler.

According to the material of manufacture, clamps for armor are:

  • plastic;
  • rubber;
  • polypropylene.

Polypropylene and rubber lath holders have become very popular as they prevent the bed from squeaking.

Thanks to the springy effect of the lamellas, the quality of the sleeping place increases. An orthopedic bed base is a necessary attribute for a healthy, sound sleep.

In the description of some pieces of furniture there are many incomprehensible words. For example, slats. What are they, what are they made of and how are they used? This term is found in construction (the so-called bars cut from mineral wool slabs), when assembling furniture and creating interior items.

Interpretation of the word

If you consider what lamellas are, you can understand that these are strips of some material. In furniture production, wood is used to make them. Similar products have several other names. For example, latoflex, bends or armor.

These bent-glued products have an arched profile. As a rule, they are used when assembling sofas and In addition, lamellas are the strips that make up window curtains - blinds.

Material

For example, oak or beech is used in the manufacture of furniture. Birch veneer is also used. According to GOST 99-96, one latoflex workpiece will require a layer of veneer from six to eight millimeters. Beech is particularly durable and hard. In addition, it has remarkable decorative characteristics. Therefore, slats made of beech decorate beds and sofas.

Furniture with orthopedic base

Where else are slats used? Many people know what is in modern sofas and beds. The described elements allow you to make your vacation truly comfortable. Long wooden planks, between which there should be a distance of four centimeters, complement the sleeping area, do not allow the mattress to sag, support the spine in an optimal position and ensure healthy sleep. It is recommended to purchase cribs with slats for children.

Such furniture has many advantages. The frame makes it easier to care for the mattress, provides air flow, and protects from dust and the so-called greenhouse effect. In this case, it is necessary to take into account what material it is made of and what its quality is. For example, it is known about lamellas that they are a bent-glued arc-shaped product. But if the dies were made from leftover wood and the joints are visible, then it is better not to take them. They can break down quickly, especially if your kids like to jump on the bed.

Blinds and their types

The most common meaning of the word “lamellas” is plates made of metal, plastic or wood. Curtains are made up of many such elements, arranged vertically or horizontally. Their name from French (blinds) can be translated as “jealousy”. This is explained by the cunning structure. It is believed that they were invented by husbands and lovers to spy on their beloved ones, because through such curtains one can see what is happening on the street, while those who are indoors are hidden from view. When the blinds are closed, their constituent strips form a continuous sheet. Vertical models are made of lamellas of two main sizes. The width of the European one is one hundred twenty-seven millimeters, and the American one is eighty-nine.

Material for blinds

In the manufacture of such popular and fashionable curtains, different materials are used. Since curtains and drapes have been used in our country for a long time, they have become widespread. They are made using materials that are produced in Belgium, France, Spain, England, the USA, and China. It is best to choose products from European manufacturers and thicker fabrics. Such blinds will retain their presentation for longer, and they are also affordable. But they have their drawbacks: they need to be removed and washed from time to time, since the fabric attracts dust. In addition, matter fades in the sun.

If the slats are made of plastic or aluminum, the blinds will be very comfortable and functional. They require minimal care. These materials are resistant to dirt and grease. They are very easy to wash. But when there is a gust of wind, the aluminum plates will rattle.

Curtains made from wooden slats are very popular. For their manufacture, cork wood is used, as well as linden and bamboo. In this case, the plates are connected to each other using threads, and each element is varnished.

Blinds in the interior

The wealth of materials and shapes of blinds allows you to decorate any interior. We can say about slats that this is a great way to bring unusual lighting into the design of a room. If the plates have a relief pattern or have an unusual shape, then when the curtains are closed, the room will be filled with shadows of interesting shapes.

Partitions for interior decoration are made from lamellas; they are used to highlight living areas in a room. To completely darken a room, blinds with light-proof panels are suitable. In offices, models made of plastic or aluminum are used. They keep their shape and are resistant to temperature changes and dirt. In addition, they will create the necessary business atmosphere. Curtains made of fabric plates or wood would be appropriate in the interior of the apartment. There are unusual multi-textured blinds. They are made from several materials. For example, fabric, plastic and metal are used.

Specialization: master in the construction of plasterboard structures, finishing work and laying floor coverings. Installation of door and window units, finishing of facades, installation of electrical, plumbing and heating - I can give detailed advice on all types of work.

The base of the bed is an important part of the structure, on which the quality of sleep largely depends. And if previously solid flooring or spring options were used, today a simpler and more effective solution has appeared - structures made of wooden slats. This option creates optimal conditions for human relaxation and is inexpensive. We will analyze all the features of the products and tell you how to install them correctly.

What are the products and why are they needed?

First, let's figure out what a lamella is. This is a special wooden plate, curved in one direction so that during installation it creates an elastic base. Most often, the elements consist of several layers of wood that are glued together, this provides the best springing properties and makes the lamellas much more resistant to deformation and damage.

Different types of wood are used in production: beech, ash, maple, linden, birch. In principle, all options differ in quality if they are produced using technology.

The most popular option is products made from birch; they are distinguished by their affordable cost and good performance indicators.

Now let’s figure out why slatted bed bases are needed:

  • This design increases the anatomical effect of the mattress, improving its properties. In fact, this is an ideal solution for orthopedic mattresses; even their manufacturers recommend using beds with just such options. They are best suited for heavy mattresses that are used in modern conditions.
  • The slats reduce the load on the bed frame and the mattress. Due to the spring properties and a separate frame, which is always used for slats, they provide longer service life of structures due to more competent weight distribution.
  • The use of slats can significantly increase the service life of the mattress. This is achieved not only due to proper weight distribution, but also due to the fact that the slats are located with gaps and the lower part of the mattress is well ventilated, which is very important. If on solid bases the lower part of mattresses is often covered with condensation, which is fraught with the formation of mold, then in a slatted structure this problem is absent.

  • Due to its curved shape, the base has a springing effect. In addition, due to the design features, the base of the bed does not creak or make other extraneous sounds even after a long period of use.
  • If you use special latex holders, the base will adapt to your anatomy. The fastening is made movable, which is very important for optimal load distribution and ensuring a comfortable position for the spine.

Aspects of choice

Now let’s figure out how to purchase quality products and what you should pay primary attention to.

In what form are they sold?

In general, slats can be included in the delivery of a sofa or bed, or they can be sold individually, which is very convenient.

It is important to remember that if at least one element in the base is broken, then sleeping on it is not recommended. This is due to improper distribution of the load on the base, and the risk of deformation of other panels, and improper distribution of weight by the mattress, which reduces its orthopedic effect.

The following options can be purchased:

  • Set of slats. Most often, this solution is suitable for those who change all the elements of the base, or for those who assemble the orthopedic base themselves. To buy a set, you need to know the size of the bed or the size of the frames in which they are placed, because in double versions two designs are used.
  • Kits on tape. This option was widely used in models produced several years ago; these days such designs are not used, as there are more advanced solutions. If you have a tape option, then you can buy a similar set and quickly replace the base; this process takes just a few minutes.

  • The armor can also be purchased individually. Most often they are sold in furniture stores or retail outlets specializing in furniture fittings. If you are looking for a separate element, then it is important to know the dimensions of the lamellas you used - their length, width and thickness, otherwise it will be difficult to choose a suitable solution.

In addition to the slats themselves, special fastenings may also be needed. There are a lot of options, so a specific solution is selected individually for a particular design.

Which ones are better

Let's figure out what aspects you need to remember when choosing slats:

Illustration Description

Wide slats. Used as a base for mattresses without springs and for options with dependent Bonnel spring blocks. They can be up to 1200 mm long and are most often used on single and half-size beds, although they are also found on double beds.

This option is highly durable; the elements withstand loads well and practically do not break during operation.

Narrow slats. Best suited for mattresses with independent spring blocks. They can be located either at the same interval or in pairs if flexible rubber fastenings on the frame are used.

The option is elastic and provides high rest comfort.

For a single bed you need 13-16 wide slats. If narrow elements are used, then there can be twice as many of them.

It is important to place the elements at the same distance so that the base has the same characteristics over the entire area.

In double designs, the slats are placed in two rows. That is, you usually need twice as many of them as in single-seat options. As for the quantity, it all depends on the width of the lamellas, the length of the base and the required rigidity of the structure.

The standard parameters of the elements are as follows:
  • Thickness 8-10 mm is the optimal solution; it is not worth taking thinner or thicker products.
  • Width from 4 to 7 cm, it all depends on the type of mattress used.
  • The length varies depending on the width of the bed, but usually one slate is made no more than a meter. Another parameter is the distance between the slats; it should be no more than the width of the slats used. Typically this figure ranges from 3 to 7 cm. The gaps can be narrower than the width of the slats.

It is important to choose high-quality holders for latoflexes(this is also the name of the products we are considering):
  • Plastic is the cheapest, but also the lowest quality solution, which can crack with significant force.
  • Polypropylene is a more flexible material that resists damage better and lasts longer than plastic.
  • Rubber is the most elastic option, which allows the lamellas to play, adapting to loads. This is the type shown in the photo on the left.

Aspects of the right choice

Illustration Description

When choosing beds, always count the number of slats in a row. The optimal number for a bed 200 cm long is 20 or more. Experts advise choosing solutions with the maximum number of elements; they are more elastic and provide reliable support for any type of mattress.

If the length of the berth is different, then the number of latoflexes will vary.

Material of manufacture. Another important aspect that directly affects the durability of the structure:
  • Birch is the most common and popular solution, characterized by low cost and good performance indicators.
  • Beech and other hardwoods are a more reliable solution, which is noticeably more expensive. But if quality is important to you, then choose this solution.

There are systems with different levels of lamella rigidity in different areas. This solution is perfect for those who have back problems, those who value comfort and care about their health.

To adjust the rigidity of individual sections of the structure, special jumpers are used, shown in the photo.

How to make a base with your own hands

Let's figure out how to insert a slatted base to replace the old solid flooring, everything is quite simple if you understand the question:

Illustration Description

Holders for slats. You need two of these elements per plank. Plus, it is advisable to purchase a few more pieces in reserve; during work, sometimes individual holders become damaged.

Lamels. Their size should match the holders, and the number should be selected depending on the size of the bed and the distance between the armor. We recommend choosing a clearance of 4 cm, this will give medium rigidity.

To work you will need this set of tools:
  • Jigsaw or hand saw. It is more convenient to cut lamellas with a power tool.
  • Construction square, tape measure and marking pencil.
  • Screwdriver with an attachment for self-tapping screws.

First the bed is vacated. It is necessary to remove the bed and remove the mattress to open access to the base. In our case, these are chipboard sheets screwed with self-tapping screws. The fasteners must be unscrewed, and the sheets removed and put away.

There is a block in the middle. It is wide enough, so there is no need to redo anything - we will use the old frame with some modifications.

The supporting elements on the side are too narrow to strengthen the frame holder; a rail is screwed to the old plank. The result was a protrusion of 5 cm.

The slats are cut to the required length with a jigsaw. Then holders are put on the end and the elements are laid out on the surface.

To control the same gap between the slats, a construction square is used; its width is exactly 4 cm.

Fastening is done through the protrusion at the bottom. We recommend using two self-tapping screws for each holder to ensure reliability.

Can be fastened with elements 25 mm long.

Assembly is carried out in the same way until the very end.. When the base is ready, you can lay the mattress and enjoy a comfortable rest.

If you need to repair part of the base and replace one or more damaged lamellas, you should simply unscrew the fasteners on the required elements and replace them. Everything is simple and fast.

Grate or solid bottom

If you still have doubts, then let's look at the advantages of lamellas:

  • The slats provide ventilation from the bottom of the mattress, a solid flooring does not.
  • The lattice has springy properties, and chipboard or plywood lies rigidly.
  • The orthopedic properties of the mattress are best demonstrated when using lats.
  • A solid base bends and creaks over time; the grate does not have these disadvantages.
  • Rack and pinion systems are much lighter, which is also important.

Conclusion

Now you are familiar with all the features of the slats used in the bases for beds and sofas, and you can install them yourself; the video will help you understand the work process even better and clearly show the important points of the work. If you have any questions, write them in the comments.
