IN summer period, when the hot sun penetrates into the house through window glass, many people have a desire to protect themselves from such exposure. Great solution in this case there will be a sun protection film.

It is worth noting that this method will not only help protect you from the sun, but also well blocks the view for strangers who sometimes look into your windows. It will be especially appropriate to use film if you live on the lower floors.

Properties of protective film

Sun protection film has many advantages, which can be seen during use. Modern market offers its clients a variety of various options, which can be used for home, office or other premises.

To create sun protection properties, it is necessary to make layers of the following materials:

  • metal coating;
  • use of aluminum;
  • titanium layer.

All these components are capable of providing reflection sun rays. The film absorbs heat, but the transparency properties of the glass remain the same.
This option can provide not only protection of the room and interior from ultraviolet radiation.

When using the film, your pets will have a comfortable stay and the active growth of plants will not stop.

The radiation reflection and absorption properties of this material are 90%. With the help of film in the room there will always be normal temperature, guaranteed protection against ultraviolet exposure.

Modern manufacturers produce options in various shades. The differences between many films are the degree of toning.

The main types are medium and highly effective options. The selection of each of them depends on the degree of impact solar radiation.

Installation process

Paste sun protection film You can do it on glass yourself.

  1. First you need to thoroughly wash the window on both sides.
  2. Next, using a spray bottle, the film must be treated with a solution of soap (preferably liquid) diluted with water. Application should be on one side only. This way, you can safely move the product along the glass until you achieve the desired position.
  3. Then the film must be applied to the surface. Once the product is fixed on the glass, you need to smooth out the defects using a spatula.

After this, the film should dry. The final step is to remove excess material until the desired size is obtained.

In this video you can clearly see how to stick solar control film on a window:

Those entering our home through windows often cause a lot of inconvenience. Ultraviolet radiation negatively affects well-being and mood. Sun protection film on windows will help protect yourself and your loved ones from this.

Main purpose of films

The rays of the sun penetrating into living spaces can ruin any interior, because walls, curtains, and furniture are subject to the process of fading. In addition, excess ultraviolet radiation negatively affects house plants, animals and the human body. Modern reflective films successfully solve these problems. They effectively reflect the energy of the sun, preventing the glass and objects inside the apartment from heating up.

Film properties

The modern market offers many films that can prevent the penetration of sunlight into apartments and offices. Sun protection properties are achieved by repeatedly applying layers of aluminum and titanium metals. It is these metals that provide reflection ultraviolet rays and heat absorption, while the transparency of the glass remains the same. Sunscreen film on windows will not only help protect the interior of the apartment - it will also ensure a comfortable stay for pets and active growth of plants.

Window films can reflect and absorb up to 90% of solar radiation, as well as up to 70% of heat, providing a cool climate and protection from solar radiation. Films are available in various shades and have different degrees of toning. Depending on the level and amount of penetrating light, you can choose a film with different degrees of tinting, which will control the penetration of rays and provide comfort.

Solar control film for windows: types

Today there are many types of films with different characteristics and scope. There are products whose installation is quite simple and can be done independently, without the involvement of specialists. The only condition is clean glass. Typically, such films are applied to inner surface window. The thickness of the protective material ranges from 110 microns and above, depending on the manufacturer.

Reflective sun protection film for windows has completely different parameters. Reviews from people who have used this option confirm that in addition to protection from ultraviolet radiation, it is resistant to mechanical stress. Minimum thickness such a film is 300 microns.

Depending on their effectiveness, films come in two types:

  • medium-effective - transmit up to 40% of light and filter up to 70% of sunlight;
  • highly efficient - reflect the entire ultraviolet flux, transmitting more than 50% of the light.

All reflective films meet environmental standards; they do not burn and do not emit toxic substances.

Preparatory work

It is not that difficult to apply solar control film to windows, but the procedure still requires certain skills and knowledge. Therefore, it is necessary to strictly follow all rules and recommendations if there is a need to do this work yourself. First you need to do accurate measurements glass that needs protection. After this, the calculation is carried out required quantity and cutting the material, adding 0.5 cm of margin to each side. You should know that rolls are produced standard width- 1.52 meters. For convenience, marking and cutting are carried out on any hard surface using a felt-tip pen, ruler and scissors, and it is necessary to check each corner.

Installing solar control film on windows: features

Reflectors can be installed on glass on the internal surface, external surface, and also inside the glass unit (as a rule, this happens at a window manufacturing plant). Maximum effect achieved if the film is glued to the outer surface. The sun's rays are reflected without heating the glass unit. When installing film on the inside surface of a window, efficiency can be significantly reduced. After all, the glass unit is heated, and a heater effect is created.

How to glue solar control film on windows

Do-it-yourself installation is usually carried out only on the inner surface of the window. To do this, you need to prepare in advance a mixture of purified water with shampoo (5 drops of shampoo per half liter of water), window cleaner, a spray bottle, a spatula and a knife. First you need to wash the glass until it is completely free of dirt, dust and possible greasy stains. After this, the mixture is applied with a spray bottle to the adhesive side of the film and to the glass. This is necessary so that you can move it along the glass until it reaches the optimal position. After this, you need to get rid of air bubbles. To do this, moving from the center to the edges, smooth the film with a spatula.

Well, we told you how to glue solar control film on a window. By the way, there is important point, which must be taken into account. If energy-saving coating is applied to the inner glass, then gluing the film can cause glass destruction. Thus, in this case, only external use of the reflector is possible.

Benefits of using solar reflectors

The use of sun protection films has a number of advantages that can be appreciated literally in the first days after installation. In the summer months there will be an opportunity to save significantly on electrical energy, because the air conditioner will turn on much less often. IN winter period heat loss will be reduced, which will also save family budget. In addition, reflectors protect the home from the penetration of sunlight, as a result, the interior of the apartment, furniture and objects will retain their original color, and the quality of life of the inhabitants will become much more comfortable. It is worth noting separately that the material we are considering is additional sound insulation, and in case of accidental contact foreign object the glass will not fall into pieces through the window.

Removing Film

There are many sources of information on how to apply solar control film to a window, but sooner or later this film has to be removed, and then certain problems may arise. Dismantling is a process that requires certain skills and free time.

There are several ways to clean glass.

  1. Mechanical. Film using sharp knife cut into strips, the edges are raised and successively removed. However, this can damage the glass, plus, the method in question takes a lot of time if the amount of work is large.
  2. Chemical method. Ammonia is applied to a cloth, which is attached to the surface of the glass and left for several hours. After this, the film can be easily removed without leaving any traces. All that remains is to thoroughly wash the surface.
  3. Using equipment. A construction hair dryer of sufficient power copes with this task perfectly. Under the flow of hot air, the film begins to rise. It is better to move from the edges to the center. After removing the reflector, a small amount of glue remains on the glass, which can be easily removed with a special solution. This method allows you to remove the outdated solar control coating much faster without damaging the glass surface.

  • ruler (1.5 m);
  • square;
  • marker (SMT-32) or pencil;
  • sprayer (manual or pump);
  • paper napkins (lint-free);
  • neutral shampoo;
  • sponge.

It is advisable to use filtered or distilled water for film installation. It should not contain any mechanical impurities (sand, rust).

It is important to use tools from proven brands. Homemade and low-quality devices leave scratches, air bubbles and other defects on the glass.

How to glue sun protection film to glass: instructions

This procedure includes a number of sequential activities. First of all, you need to prepare the room in which the film will be installed. It should be: dry, clean and protected from drafts so that small particles of dust from the air do not get under the film. The temperature in the room is not higher than +30°C and not lower than +10°C. Recommended air humidity is from 20 to 80%.

Detailed instructions on how to properly apply solar control film to windows:

Stage No. 1. Open the films

The film is cut using a ruler, square and cutting knife on a perfectly flat table. The width and length of the sheet must correspond to the dimensions of the glass + 10 mm for cutting on each side (or 15 mm when installing the film on a double-glazed window in a window structure).

If you plan to tint several windows at once, use a marker to number each cut piece in accordance with the window layout. This will help avoid mistakes and save time.

Stage No. 2. Glass cleaning

To thoroughly clean the glass surface, you need:

✓ Make a solution: mix 0.5 liters of water with 3-4 drops of neutral shampoo. The proportion may vary depending on the hardness of the water.

✓ Pour the solution into a sprayer and spray the liquid onto the glass. Rub the soap solution over the surface of the glass with a sponge.

✓ Clean the glass from adhering particles, dried paint and remaining dirt. To do this you will need a scraper with a metal blade. Cleaning must be done in 2 directions: vertical and horizontal.

✓ Wipe the edges of the glass with a paper towel to remove dirt and dust.

✓ Spray the previously prepared solution onto the glass again. Walk 3-4 times along the glass surface with a rubber wiper in horizontal and vertical directions. After each pass, it is recommended to wash the instrument with a clean solution.

✓ Do not use ready-made products containing ammonia (for example, “Mr. Muscle”) to clean glass. Leftovers ammonia can deactivate the adhesive on the film and it will not stick well.

After these procedures have been completed, you can begin to glue the solar control film onto the window.

Stage No. 3. Installation (rolling) of film

To install the film you need:

✓ Spray the solution generously from a spray bottle onto the desired piece of film and the surface of the glass. When removing the protective layer, this will reduce dust getting on the glue to a minimum.

✓ Layer the sun protection film starting from the corner, i.e. remove part of the protective lavsan. Next, continuing to moisten the opening with the solution adhesive base, slowly and as carefully as possible remove the lavsan from the entire sheet. It is advisable to use two people to separate the material: one holds the corners of the film from above (be sure to wet your fingers with soapy water so that there are no fingerprints left on the corners of the film!), the other wets and removes protective layer. If there is no assistant: spray the glass with the solution, apply a film to it and carefully remove the lavsan, remembering to constantly wet it.

✓ Place the film on the glass with the adhesive side and wet the outside of the material to ensure good glide of the tool. Next, you need to carefully smooth the film with a rubber wiper, driving out the water from under the sheet.

✓ Remove remaining liquid with polyurethane distillation. The tool should be moved from the center to the edges, without missing a single section. The more effort you put into squeezing out the moisture, the faster the film will dry.

✓ Trim the edges of the film at an angle of 15°-20° using a cutting knife. There should be a distance of 3-5 mm from the edges of the glass to the edges of the film. The gap increases depending on the thickness of the material: the thicker, the larger. When tinting glass that will subsequently be assembled into a double-glazed window, you need to find out in advance the dimensions of the design distance. This will help make the correct gap.

✓ Roll the edges of the sheet by pressing and press them using a forcing wrapped in several layers of napkins or just napkins.

The final stage is to put the glass to dry if gluing occurs in the window production. This will take several days. About a day after installing the solar control film on the window, you should inspect the work and, if necessary, correct defects.

If you need to dry several glasses with film, it is recommended to arrange them so that there is a gap between them for ventilation (i.e., do not dry in a “pack”).

How to eliminate defects after installing solar control film on windows?

During and after installing the film on glass, the following troubles may arise:

  • Bubbles (lenses) of water . You can try to squeeze out the remaining moisture to the nearest edge of the material by squeezing. If the glue has already hardened, you need to pierce the swollen area with a needle and carefully remove the liquid.
  • Fogging and appearance of cloudy spots on the film . Is a visual effect, not an installation defect! Appears due to the fact that a soap solution remains under the film. Minor cloudiness evaporates through micropores in the material after a few days of exposure sunlight and warmth.
  • Fast adhesion of film to glass . If installation is carried out with high temperature on a hot surface, the film will very quickly “stick” to the glass and thus make smoothing difficult. In case of heat, we recommend spraying the adhesive layer and glass more generously with the solution. In this case, the lavsan is removed as the material is rolled in.
  • Garbage under the film. A large number of It is impossible to remove debris; re-gluing is required.

Remember, glass with film can be passed through washing machine in window production or wash after 3-7 days.

This instruction tells you how to install the film on flat glass. The process of tinting spherical car windows is much more complicated. There you will need another tool and construction hair dryer(blower). If you still have questions about how to apply solar control film to the glass of a window, contact the installation department of Global Fusion Ukraine by phone.

Disadvantages of a mirror surface

Let's consider the possible disadvantages related specifically to the mirror coating.

  • The film has mirror surface on the side where it is lighter. That is, during the day it will be brighter from the street side and for passers-by the glass will be a real impenetrable mirror. But in the evening and at night you will have to use curtains or blinds, because now it will be lighter on your side and it will not be difficult for onlookers to look out the window, especially on the first floors.
  • Another disadvantage is the difficulty of dismantling if properly glued according to the instructions.

Otherwise, this method sun protection can be considered universal. You will always be safe, keep your things from fading.

An additional bonus will be the reasonable cost.

And because of her it is simply impossible to be at home, everyone has to save themselves possible ways. One of the most simple options is window protection. Let's look at how to glue solar control film to a window.

Select the film and glue it to the window

Kinds

You can now find several types of window coverings in the store, and each of them will serve a specific purpose. In total, three main types can be distinguished.

Protective

This film is designed to make the glass stronger and at the same time darken it. It is well suited for those whose apartments are located on the first floors. This way you will save your home from prying eyes and protect it.

Matte

It is mainly used for interior doors and partitions. But it can also be used on. For example, for windows in a bathroom or toilet. In addition, it also has the ability to reduce the intensity of sunlight.

Sun protection

It is usually done with mirror effect to minimize the penetration of sunlight into the apartment and heating. On hot days it will be a good addition to the lungs or blinds.

The main advantage of such a film is that it does not darken the glass and does not reduce visibility from the inside, while it is no longer possible to see what is in the room from the outside.

Advantages and disadvantages

During operation, any product has both pros and cons.

Advantages

  • Thanks to it, the room does not heat up on hot days, so with this coating you will not need to use cooling devices and you will be able to save on electricity.
  • In winter, on the contrary, it will retain heat inside and prevent the glazing from cooling quickly. This effect is achieved thanks to aluminum coating.
  • It protects wall coverings, floors and furniture from fading due to direct sunlight.
  • Does not get dirty and does not accumulate dirt, unlike curtains.
  • Products with different shades, such as bronze or gold, will look very stylish from the outside.

Flaws

  • The product is very thin and easily damaged during installation.
  • Cheap option may damage your glass. When exposed to the sun, the coating literally dries to the glass and is then very difficult to remove. Therefore, when choosing the best solar protection, it is important to consider not only how to properly stick the solar control film on the window, but also what quality material to choose.
  • It does not save you from prying eyes in the evening, because due to interior lighting the glass will be translucent. Therefore, if you live on the ground floor, you won’t be able to remove the curtains.

How to apply solar film to windows

You will need

  • Pure water. We recommend using bottled water because it does not contain impurities that may form a residue on the glass.
  • Lint-free fabric. You can find similar fabric at a hardware or automotive store.
  • A streak-free glass cleaner.
  • Rubber and metal spatulas.
  • Spray bottle with soap solution.
  • Sharp scissors.
  • Stationery knife or blade.
  • Large line.
  • The film itself.

Before gluing the solar control film on the window in the room. This is especially true for those who have pets. This way you can avoid getting wool on the glued surface. Repair work or laying asphalt on the street can also interfere with installation, since flying dust will cause a lot of difficulties with pasting. We advise you to wait until the repairs are completed.

Observe and certain temperature regime. Optimal temperature for such work - 25 degrees Celsius. If the room is cold or there is a draft, the glue will take a long time to dry. Also try. Thanks to this, the product will lie evenly and neatly.

Glass preparation

First, the glass must be thoroughly washed with soapy water, and then cleaned with a special liquid to remove all stains.

Special attention Focus on edges and corners. If they have heavy pollution, then they must be removed with a metal spatula or scraper.

Inspect the glass for lint and hairs. They can cause nasty bubbles to appear.

Pasting process

After cleaning, cut the material. Don't forget to leave an allowance of 3-5 millimeters at the edges, which will be trimmed later. You need to cut with very sharp scissors or a blade. If the roll is very narrow and is not enough to cover the width of the entire glass unit, then the product will have to be glued end-to-end in an inconspicuous place.

For greater convenience, place the material on a previously prepared surface, for example, a board that you don’t mind scratching. Then place a ruler on it and take measurements, then, holding the ruler, draw the blade along it. This way you will achieve a perfectly straight cut line.

To determine which side to place the solar control film on the window, look at the material on the roll. A protective layer on which writing can be written. small instructions, always adheres to the adhesive side. It must be applied to the glass.

Now spray the glass with a spray bottle. Remove the protective layer from the cut piece and carefully apply it to the glass. Now it’s important to distribute it evenly and accurately along the entire window perimeter, this will help you rubber spatula.

Wet the product and reverse side so that the spatula glides better and does not accidentally tear the coating. It is necessary to smooth the material from the center to the edges. The stronger the pressure, the more moisture will come out and the work will dry faster.

Trim off excess material and leave the surface to dry. All is ready.

Detailed Process you can watch it on the video.

Elimination of defects

Even if you follow all the rules and carry out the work accurately, you may encounter some troubles. There are several ways to resolve them.

  • If on finished surface If you notice bubbles, you can try to distribute them with a spatula to the edges. However, this does not always help. In this case, pierce this area with a needle and smooth the material.
  • Don't be alarmed by cloudy spots. This can be a soap solution, which, under the influence of the sun, will evaporate through micropores.
  • During the hot season, you may encounter the problem that the product sticks to the glass very quickly and unevenly. To avoid this, moisten the adhesive surface with plenty of water.
  • It will not be possible to remove large amounts of debris and dust under the material. In this case, the work will have to be redone.

Rules of care

In order for the product to serve you for a long time, you need to follow basic care rules.

  • Do not touch the film after installation for a month, otherwise it may slip. This also applies.
  • For cleansing, do not use aggressive chemicals, hard sponges and washcloths. They can leave stains or even damage the coating.
  • If solid dirt appears on the surface, it is better to carefully remove it with a rubber spatula.
