Holy Scripture (Bible) is the book of the church. In practice, the system of Orthodox dogma is structured approximately as follows. Church councils spoke on some issues, and the more representative the council, the more authoritative and immutable its opinion. Their authority stems from a simple principle. At these meetings it was possible to formulate those foundations of doctrine, which, according to the words of one of the ancient church writers, were recognized by all Christians, at all times and wherever there are Christians.

There is a written heritage of the holy fathers - people glorified by the church for their life and work. The authority of these texts is based on the ascetic religious and moral life of these Christians, on their deep authentic experience of communion with God, the experience of studying and putting into practice those commandments that are given to us by Christ God in the Holy Scriptures. True, one caveat must be made here. The most authoritative are those opinions of the holy fathers that agree with each other. That is, those questions in which most of the saints spoke in a similar way are recognized as authoritative, even if this issue was not touched upon in Holy Scripture and at church councils.

Only on the basis of the foregoing is it possible to speak of angels. Moreover, it can be argued that the teaching of the Orthodox Church about angels is rather modest. The information provided by the Holy Scriptures is fragmentary and scattered. This is clear. The central theme of the Bible is the relationship between man and God. No one and nothing can overshadow this topic. The most detailed stories about those creatures that inhabit the space between God and people, characteristic of pagan peoples, are absent in the Bible. Man and God communicate directly. Angels appear on some special occasions and at special moments, and only here some information about them is revealed. Authoritative church councils did not deal with the topic of angels. The Holy Fathers wrote about angels, as a rule, in the same context as the Bible, that is, quite rarely, scattered; and almost always it was an additional theme of their narrative.

About angels and angelic ranks

The word "angel" is translated into Russian as "messenger". One of the modern church writers quite successfully, but somewhat rudely, compared angels with postmen. These are the so-called service spirits, created by God for special assignments and functions. Judging by the well-known evidence of the Holy Scriptures, angels, like people, are personal beings, that is, they have self-consciousness and free will. Angels are called saints. This means that they are not involved in evil and live by fulfilling and revealing to people the will of God.

The Bible often speaks of angelic hosts. Thus, the serviceability of their existence, structural separation and hierarchy are revealed to us. However, this can only be guessed at. The Bible names several ranks of angels and even some names of angelic "warlords". Everyone knows at least two of them - this is Gabriel, who brought the good news to the Virgin Mary and Michael, who rebuffed the fallen angel - Satan.

By analogy or under the influence of pagan teachings about the heavenly hierarchies, in the fourth century a similar work of an anonymous Christian author appeared, inscribed with the name of the first century saint Dionysius the Areopagite. It presents an attempt to give a coherent doctrine of angels, which are divided into nine functional orders, grouped in threes. About guardian angels

Biblical revelation says that one of the angelic ministries is taking care of people, protecting them from evil, protecting them from demonic obsessions and attacks. Those of the angels who protect people and help them to know and fulfill the will of God are called guardian angels. According to the prevailing belief, which is quite consistent with the Orthodox dogma, but is not strictly dogmatic, all people have guardian angels. In the most primitive version, this belief is expressed in the belief of some people that such angels are always on the right, and their antipodes - demons - on the left of each person. Often even this is depicted as two advisers whispering good and evil thoughts to the person, respectively. Of course, this is just a childish naive picture through which folklore reflected the belief in the presence of guardian angels.

It can be seen from the biblical narrative that, in addition to people, guardian angels are given by God at His discretion to churches, entire nations, settlements and some societies.
