There are decorative elements that are literally These words transform the interior of the room. These include arched structures, especially those made of wood. And the best news is that making a wooden arch with your own hands is quite simple. This material is dedicated to this process.

Types of construction

No matter what they tell you, there are two main types of these structures, everything else is just their derivatives.

Exist:

  • Classic or semicircular arches. This also includes elliptical, modern and other subspecies. The main distinguishing element of the design is the rounding of a certain radius.
  • And portal type options. Portals are nothing more than a door frame, made in volume and rich in decorative elements. If the first type of arches is considered sufficient household option, then the portal belongs to the elite, emphasizing the seriousness and officiality of the organization or premises.

Some authors identify a third type of arches – combined. In these constructors, an arc is superimposed on the base of the portal, which is either an independent element or combined with wood, glass or plastic. In this case, additional elements can carry either simply an aesthetic load, or a functional one, for example, they can serve as shelves for small figurines, vases or candlesticks.

About the constituent elements

Portal kits will not be considered in this material for a very banal reason: the assembly of this structure is not difficult. So that the portal has a solid appearance, all you need are carved panels, the price of which sometimes goes beyond imaginable limits. But beauty requires sacrifice and financial investment, especially since the carved panel is the result of the hard work of the master, it is worth the money. Let's focus on the arcs.

Door arches made of wood consist of two elements:

  • The arches themselves are an unpaired element;
  • The side stand is a paired element.

Preparing for work

For many jobs, the preparatory period can be considered in passing, mentioning only the selection of tools and remembering Golden Rule about sevenfold measurement and one cut. This will not work with an arch, since this is where the foundation for success is laid.

Therefore, this section is an instruction for action; we will analyze it in detail:

  1. Step one. Determination of sizes and shapes.

Note!
A classic arch has a radius of curvature equal to half the width of the doorway.
If you are satisfied with this option, then this step is completed.
But there are non-standard openings when the height is much greater than the width or the width exceeds the height.
In the first option, an ellipse shape with the option gothic style execution, in the second - trapezoidal with an elongated transverse beam and small arcs at the transition to the side posts.
And it is precisely when the width predominates over the height that they are acceptable combined options arches, when the side space can be “sewn up” stained glass, or equipped with additional shelves for figurines and other elements of home decoration.

  1. Step two. Preparing patterns for an arched structure. Let's go into a little more detail here. If you are making, for example, interior arches made of wood, then you can simply buy curved boards or slats, you don’t have to rack your brains about how to bend the board so that it doesn’t burst. But you will have to make the end parts yourself, and not just make them, but fit them with minimal seams. For this, it is ideal to make a pattern from fiberboard - this is the most cheap option. Also suitable are scraps of plywood, if you have them, or any other wide enough sheet version, but fiberboard is still better.

To the piggy bank!
A large radius requires a large compass.
As a rule, large compasses are not found in a home workshop, but they are simply made.
The two slats are connected with a bolt.
And then you can imagine perfectly well: on one there is a nail or a self-tapping screw to determine the center of the circle, on the second there is a drawing element (pencil or marker).
The compass is ready.

  1. Step three. Instrumental selection. Everything is simple here: a jigsaw, clamps, a homemade circular saw and abrasive tool... oh yes, and a hammer drill.

Assembly and installation

So, we started making a wooden arch with our own hands:

  • First of all, let's install the lamella in place. A hammer drill and self-tapping screws for fastening the part will come in handy here;
  • Then we assemble the end parts. Here the same pattern on which the planks are installed at an angle to each other comes to the fore; the most important thing is that they completely cover the corners of the openings. Trimming and fitting is carried out;
  • Then the parts of the arc are connected and the side panels are attached.

This set of actions contains the answer to the question of how to make a wooden arch with your own hands.

From home to garden

Arches are a universal element. A garden arch made of wood, for example, is no less common than an indoor arch. This element can be simply a decoration, like a wedding arch, or it can carry a load, serving as a support for climbing plants.

For reference!
A do-it-yourself garden arch is made from wood in exactly the same way as for indoors, but since there are no fastenings to the walls, the arch itself is strengthened additional layer overlap

About materials

In conclusion, a short overview of the possibility of using wood and materials imitating wood.

Material Appearance Impact resistance Price component
Tree Wood is wood, texture and color need no introduction With impregnation against mold and fungal infection, periodic “refreshing” with varnishes and stains in the house it will serve, if not forever, then for a very long time. True, wood tends to shrink and become cracked. Depending on the type of wood: from pine to oak - from minimum to maximum
MDF Full wood imitation It is easy to clean and quite durable, does not require tinting or impregnation, but an attentive viewer can easily distinguish imitation wood from the original More expensive than pine, but cheaper than elite wood species. Undesirable for outdoor structures
Laminated chipboard Low fidelity texture simulation The surface can be wiped clean. A budget option in the full sense of the word. Not suitable for outdoor structures.

Conclusion

We hope that the information presented to the reader will help him make the interior of his home individual. Additional thematic materials will be provided by the video in this article. Good luck!

One of the most ancient building structures- the arch does not lose its relevance today. It is used in the design of windows and doorways, porticoes, gazebos or as a decorative element landscape design garden Used for construction various materials, among which wood is especially popular. Let's consider the advantages wooden structures, features of choice and technology for creating an arch with your own hands.

Advantages of using arches in the interior of a room

Arches in construction are a curved overlap of spans between two supports or openings in a wall. Thanks to the curved vault, arched structures can withstand significant loads.

Arches found their application in each of the historical periods, and largely determined the architecture of buildings Ancient Rome, European buildings of the 12th century and ancient Russian architecture during the construction of Christian churches.

Nowadays, arched structures have not lost their elegance and are often used in the design of residential premises. The main advantages of using arches in an apartment include:

  • opportunity to avoid standard solutions in the layout of the room;
  • visual expansion/sliding and zoning of space;
  • the ability to hide the imperfections and angularities of the room;
  • getting rid of doors;
  • decorative element - brings a “zest” to the interior, gives the room an elegant and stylish look.

Types of arches: choosing size and shape

When choosing the shape and color of the arch, it is important to consider the design of the room. Often the arch is made to match the color of the furniture or as a contrast to the main design of the room.

Let's look at the most common forms of arched openings today.

Classic arch has the shape of an opening - a regular circle. This type of arch is considered universal and fits into almost any interior of the room. The classic arch is optimal for doorways with a height of 2.5 meters. Curvature radius = ½*opening width.

Arch "Elipse" usually used for small opening heights. This solution allows you to emphasize the individuality of the interior and avoid traditional circles.

Arched doorway “Romance” has a straight central frame with rounded corners. The radius of the corners is selected by the designer based on the size of the room and the style of the interior.

A significant advantage of the “Romance” design is that the arch does not take up much free space at the point of curvature, so it can be used when arranging low openings

Arch "Portal"- most simple design, which does not require changing the shape and size of the window or door opening. The arch can be “mounted” into a rectangular opening. You can visually “soften” the perception if you slightly bend the corners of the structure.

Portals trimmed with wood are used in office premises- such an element emphasizes status and brings a touch of luxury to the interior. In addition, “U”-shaped arches are often used to decorate interiors in the style of minimalism and hi-tech.

Arch "Yoke" looks equally good in both narrow and wide openings. This arch shape is combined with the panels of the door leaf and furniture, making the room more sophisticated. “Yoke” can be found in country-style, Provence and Scandinavian design interiors.

Transom- continuation door leaf. Such an arch performs not only a decorative function, but also a practical one - the transom lets the daylight. The arch follows any shape of the doorway, and can be used as an independent element without the presence of the door itself.

Arch in the "Modern" style- performed with a large radius of the arched opening, the shape of the structure is an oval arch of the correct shape.

Arch "Trapezoid"- design with sewn corners. It is used in interior openings of various widths and heights. It is easy to manufacture, as it does not require complex wood processing - straight bars and threaded strips are used.

Wooden arches can be supplemented with side elements - practical shelves, curly patterns or decorative items(candlesticks, pendants, lamps, etc.).

Material selection

Trees are suitable for making arches different breeds: larch, oak, pine, linden, ash and others. Here are some recommendations for choosing source material, which will help you build a strong and durable interior arch.

  1. Oak slats are resistant to rotting and are optimally suited for furnishing wet areas. The disadvantage of the material is its high cost.
  2. Pine is a softwood and is susceptible to moisture, but due to its high resin content it does not rot. The advantage of the material is its availability. Pine arches are suitable for interior apartment openings.
  3. Natural wood can be replaced with thin MDF boards- they are easy to use, unpretentious, and ready product has a decent appearance. MDF can be varnished, shaded or repainted in the desired color.
  4. For economy projects, chipboard is suitable. An arch made of chipboard can be covered with decorative film, resulting in an exclusive product.
  5. The design of the arch is also made from veneer - a thin cut of wood. The material looks beautiful and presentable, resistant to impact negative factors(temperature, humidity, sun) and is inexpensive. Veneer can be used when arranging doorways in the kitchen and bathroom.

Do-it-yourself interior wooden arch

Let's consider, as an example, how to make an arch from wood with the following parameters:

  • width - 1500 mm;
  • arch circumference radius - 750 mm;
  • depth (wall thickness) - 160 mm;
  • the height of the arch in the assembly is 2300 mm.

The principle of creating an arched lintel: the main structure is assembled from many small parts- beams cut along an arc. In this case, the length of the workpieces can vary in the range of 400-800 mm. The longer curved beam, the wider it should be.

Tools and materials

To make wooden arches you will need following materials and construction equipment:

  • level;
  • pencil and tape measure;
  • large compass;
  • wood saw or jigsaw;
  • screwdriver;
  • sharp knife;
  • hammer drill or impact drill;
  • self-tapping screws;
  • a sheet of fiberboard or plywood to create a template;
  • planed boards, calibrated on a thicknesser (boards of equal thickness - 40 mm);
  • finishing varnish.

Layout and template creation

Using a large compass or two slats and a nail, draw the arch arch. When choosing the radius of the circle, you must remember - the deeper the arch, the more difficult it is to manufacture. Therefore, when making a design for the first time, it is better to choose a gentler bend.

When developing a drawing, it is important to adhere to the rule: the distance from the top edge of the arch to the ceiling must be at least 30 cm

So, the sequence of creating a template:

  1. On fiberboard sheet draw an arch in full size with a radius of 750 mm.
  2. Draw an upper arc with a radius of 790 mm. The centers of the circles of the two arcs must coincide. The difference between the two sizes (40 mm is the thickness of the arched lintel).
  3. Cut out an arc according to the markings.

Preparing beams and assembling the arch

The next stage of creating an arch is preparing the beams:

  1. Attach the template to the board and draw the lower and upper arc.
  2. Cut out the part with a jigsaw.
  3. Sand the prepared part and process it.

The inner side of the arch is the front part of the arch, so it must be cut out especially carefully. The top edge is not processed.

The cut beams are assembled according to a template - one is joined to the other along the entire width of the arch. First, the first row of bars is assembled, and the ends of the parts are adjusted to each other as accurately as possible.

The second row is prepared like the first, but the bars are positioned with a slight offset - about ½ of the part. It is advisable to number all the beams - this will significantly simplify and speed up the assembly process.

  1. Apply glue to the bottom surface of the second row block and attach the part to the marked place.
  2. Screw the beam with self-tapping screws so that they capture two “layers” of the arch (4 screws for each part). “Drown” the screw caps.
  3. IN next block We smear the end and bottom surface with glue, press it tightly to the first row of the arch and butt it with the previous block. “Tighten” the parts with self-tapping screws.
  4. Cast on the entire second row. All parts along the lower edges must be very accurately aligned.
  5. Cast on a couple more rows in the same way. The total thickness of the arch is 160 mm (4 rows of 40 mm each).

The assembled arc is quite strong and does not require additional fastening.

Finishing

The inner edge of the arch must be sanded well, minor inconsistencies between the rows must be sanded out. A drill with a sanding attachment or a sander is suitable for this work. This treatment will hide the “joining stripes” and it will seem that the vault is made of solid wood.

Arch installation

Vault installation sequence:

  1. If the arch is made under double door, then on the lower edge you need to go through a quarter with a router.
  2. Connect the arched lintel from the top side to vertical bars door frame. Connect the ends, screw the box with self-tapping screws.
  3. For the upper part of the structure, you need to make an arched frame - cut out of boards (thickness - 12 mm). If one board is not enough, then it can be made from several elements, and the joint can be decorated with a figured overlay.

If you don’t want to waste time making a vault, you can buy ready set and assemble the arch yourself. Carrying out installation finished design you must adhere to a number of rules:

  • before starting work, the old wooden box must be removed and the surface cleaned;
  • It is better to start installing a multi-component arch from the top - this will make it easier to adjust the dimensions and fit the product into the doorway;
  • the gaps between the arch and the walls can be closed with wood, plasterboard, MDF or chipboard; all “rough” material must be hidden under the finishing;
  • when assembling the structure, you should not immediately tighten the screws tightly - you may need to adjust the arch to the desired position;
  • wooden arch must be treated with an antifungal compound.

Large arch with low crossbar - interesting solution, which allows you to separate the two functional areas in the apartment: living room and hallway.

Arch "Ellipse" with a spacious bookcase is a harmonious continuation of the interior, made in white and pink tones.

An arch in the ancient Roman style would look appropriate in country house or a spacious multi-level apartment.

A horseshoe-shaped arch frames the entrance to the hall. The side of the structure is equipped with functional shelves.

Interior arch with spotlights visually expands the space and makes the hallway brighter.

A doorway decorated with an arch and transom. Floral patterns on glass enliven calm interior rooms and bring into the room a feeling of freshness and spring mood.

A classic arch on wooden columns - the room looks harmonious, sophisticated and elegant.

Doorways in a house do not always imply the presence of doors. Wood trim on arches is often used. This method of designing a doorway allows you to make the corridor or rooms in a private house, apartment or office visually larger and brighter. This question is quite relevant. And for those who want to remake a doorway with their own hands, it is very important to know how to make a wooden arch yourself. Making interior wooden arches is not an easy process, but still doable. In this article I will tell you how to make an arch with your own hands, and then install it correctly.

Types of arches

Such designs are divided into types according to their shape and style.

  1. Classic. A classic arch is usually called a semicircle or arc. This look fits perfectly into any environment, be it a residential building or an office building.
  2. Arches in the Art Nouveau style are considered modern. The look is a little similar to the classic one, the only difference is its shape, since its upper part has the shape of a circle. If you add a little imagination, you can add a little romance (make it in the form of a rectangle and round its corners). This option is ideal for wide doorways.
  3. For rooms with spacious rooms there is a type of arches, which has the shape of a semi-ellipse.
  4. The most common types of Art Nouveau arches are trapezoids. They look special when installed when moving from one room to another.
  5. Exclusive options require a wild imagination, as they can have non-standard forms. If a person wants to create in his home unique design, then exclusive views for him. Here you can make broken lines and various kinds of abstractions.

Material selection

For the production of wooden arches, there are four main materials: pine, oak, beech and mahogany. Scots pine is most often used as the base material. And all because of the color of its wood. It has a pinkish core, which changes to dark red over time. Among its advantages are high density, good strength, elasticity, resistance to rotting. It is one of the cheapest finishing materials.

Oak and beech are chosen only when the apartment is already decorated with something similar in style and shade. These are specific and very durable materials, have a special color and wood. Mahogany is the most expensive, it looks very rich and serious. Often this material is chosen when a wooden arch is needed in the office of a large company. For residential premises, the material is used less frequently. As for the remaining materials in order to decorate the interior doorway, it can be plasterboard with additional wallpaper, and plastic panels, and glass. The choice is very wide, the decision is only up to the home owner.

Manufacturing

Depending on what type of arch you want to make with your own hands, you need to do certain work. Let's look at the most typical options:

  • Interior wooden arches of oval, round or rounded shape are made by connecting small parts. You need to prepare a slightly rounded beam, which you will then connect into a whole product. You can glue them together, or you can connect them with metal staples. The wooden look of the arches will then have to be thoroughly cleaned and sanded so that there are no burrs or irregularities left.
  • Make a wooden arch square shape or with sharp corners does not require any special explanation, since its manufacture does not require much knowledge. You can connect straight parts, as in previous versionspecial glue or staples, wood lends itself quite well to any type of connection.
  • Wooden arches can be of a shape that combines both the first and second types. In this case, it is worth combining both methods: prepare small timber about 10-20 centimeters long for ovals and large, flat ones for other parts.

Preparing the opening

So that the arch fits into the opening without unnecessary problems, especially when wood is chosen for its manufacture, and you decide to do all the work yourself, you have to carefully prepare the wall and installation site.

It is worth removing everything unnecessary from the walls where the arch is attached - wallpaper, panels, paint. Clean the wall and level it. If the wooden interior arches have an oval format, and the old opening is square, then it needs to be converted into an oval. To do this, you can use additional brick, stone (do masonry), add a plasterboard frame, etc. It all depends on desire. The main thing is that the size of the resulting opening coincides with the parameters by which the arch was made.

Installation

In order for the arch to be installed well, it is worth preparing screws for wood, special glue, screwdriver, possibly dowels. When you insert wooden look arches in the door - check if everything is correct:

  • the arch should not look beyond the edges of the walls;
  • she should not hide behind the edge of the wall, everything becomes level.

Wooden arches between rooms should be installed so as not to damage their structure. It is necessary to screw the arch elements with self-tapping screws to the wall to strengthen the structure. If formed empty seats– they can be puttied or foamed. But this will be a minus of the design.

Finishing

Once the arch is installed, it's time to finish it properly. If you made the opening itself using drywall, then before installing the structure, it was worth covering it with wallpaper or performing other cladding. The wooden type of arches must be varnished or painted. This way, you can protect the structure from aging and fading, and it will serve for many years.

At the end of the work, you need to check whether there are any disadvantages on the arch itself - dents, irregularities, chips. If they are detected, it is necessary to eliminate them as much as possible using finishing, which is selected. When you make an arch in a house or apartment, remember that the wooden type of openings will always be the best option, since it is environmentally friendly. The wear resistance and durability of wood makes it very good option for work in houses.

Be careful at every moment when you make and install an arch with your own hands, and you will succeed. Good luck!

Video “Making a wooden arch with your own hands”

The video shows a master class on making a wooden arch.

The arch is a popular type of decoration; since antiquity it has been used to decorate openings, gazebos and paths in the garden. Inside the room, arches visually expand the space, making rooms more spacious and brighter. This element gives the interior uniqueness; it allows you to hide the shortcomings of the home and divide it into several zones. The curved vault of arched structures can withstand significant loads.

Decorative arches largely determined the appearance of buildings in Ancient Rome, medieval buildings in Europe and masterpieces of ancient Russian architecture. In a word, they have been used in literally every historical period.

Wooden arches can be made to order, but they can also be easily made with your own hands. You will get it no worse than in the photo below. Next we will look at this process in detail.

Preparation

The first step is to decide on the material from which the structure will be made. Interior vaults are most often made of oak, ash, pine, larch, mahogany and other species. Each of the materials has its own characteristics.

The main advantages of pine are its shades (from pink to dark red). This is a durable but quite elastic material. Pine blanks have affordable price, this type of wood is resistant to rotting.

Oak and beech are the most durable materials. They are suitable for rooms with high humidity, although they can be used anywhere if the decoration has something similar in texture and style.

Mahogany looks elegant and expensive because high price it is rarely used in residential buildings. With a modest budget, an arch in wooden house can be made of chipboard.

Having decided on the material, you need to choose the size and shape of the decoration. This entirely depends on the type of furniture and design of the room or hall.

Designers identify the following forms of decorative arches:

  • classic (semicircle or arc);
  • “modern” (vault flattened at the top);
  • ellipse;
  • trapezoid (a structure made of straight boards with sewn corners).

There are also exclusive solutions - “portals”, “transoms” and so on. Each of these forms has its own nuances of use.

The classic version (see photo) will suit almost any room. These are ideal arches for doorways with a height of 2.5 m. “Modern” - a vault in the shape of a regular oval, on the contrary, is installed in wide places.

The ellipse is ideal for doorways of small height, and the trapezoid is almost universal (this is the most simple form from a production point of view).

Wooden arches allow you to decorate them additional elements: side shelves and various decorative elements - candlesticks, pendants, lamps and so on.

Manufacturing

Structurally, a wooden arch consists of a set of small parts - beams, which are cut along an arc. The length of the blanks can vary between 40-80 cm. The longer the curved beam, the wider it should be.

Production consists of three simple steps: creating a drawing and cutting out a template, cutting beams and assembling, final finishing.

To work you will need the following tools and materials:

  • planed boards of equal thickness (about 4 cm);
  • compass
  • level;
  • pencil;
  • screwdriver and screws;
  • drywall;
  • roulette;
  • perforator;
  • jigsaw;

Step one: create the vault of the arch

We will make an interior wooden arch from pine boards. First, let's calibrate the material using a rimming machine. Next, we will cut the board into 3 cm thick planks, which we will also run through the frame. After this, we will cut the finished planks into required quantity bars (their size will be equal to the width of the opening).

Let's draw arched vault using a large compass (you can use two large slats and a nail instead), its radius should be 1-2 cm less than the radius of the opening. If this is your first time making an arch yourself, you should choose the gentlest possible bend. The steeper the arc, the more difficult it is to create the desired structure. When developing a drawing, you should also take into account that the distance from the top edge of the decoration to the ceiling cannot be less than 30 cm. Based on the drawing, a plasterboard template is made.

Lubricate the sides of each bar with glue and lay them out along the radius of the template (the bars must be joined; to simplify the work, they can be pre-numbered). This preparation should be left for one day. When the glue dries, remove the arch from the template and strengthen it reverse side using glue and fabric. This will give our product additional strength. The front side needs to be processed grinder, after placing it back into the template.

Step two: make the arched casing and side posts

Cut the board into small pieces. Lay them out so that they coincide with the radius of the arch, then connect them together with glue and leave to dry for one day. After this, the glued platband can be sanded, its front side should be processed with a milling cutter.

To make side posts, make a harness hand cutter. Create panels, insert them into the harness and glue them well. Then all that remains is to fasten the vertical trim to the stand and glue the edging from the three finished parts.

Step three: final processing and assembly of the arch

Parts of the structure that are ready for assembly must be re-passed grinder. This will hide the joints to create the illusion of a solid arch. After sanding, the parts can be coated with paint or varnish. When the coating has dried, you can begin installing our product in the opening. First, the arched part is installed, then the side posts are mounted, and the lining is installed at the joints between them.

You will need

  • electric jigsaw, drill, planed boards 16-20 mm thick, a flap attachment on a drill for sanding the edges of an arch, or a sander.

Instructions

First, the doorway (for example, the opening is W-100cm, H-210cm, wall thickness 14cm). Afterwards we will make a template for the arc of the arch. The larger the radius, the lower the arc itself will be; the radius can be determined experimentally. The arch will be smaller than the opening by 20 mm in height and 30 mm in width (i.e. height - 208 cm, width - 97 cm). An arch made of 3 large parts: the arch arc - the upper part and 2 vertical side bars.

The arc of the arch is two prefabricated parts connected by transverse bars between. Using the prepared template, we cut out the details of the arc. First, let's divide the arc into two parts - this segment of 1/2 arch is a working template. The width of the parts is 40 mm. We cut out six of these parts and four more half the size. We assemble the arc: we join 2 parts and on them, shifting the parts by half, we lay the third workpiece, 2 arcs complete the assembly. We connect the blanks with 30 mm self-tapping screws, coating the joints with glue. We assemble the second arc in the same way. We connect both resulting arcs with transverse bars (5 pieces) with a section of 40x40 mm. and length 60 mm. The entire arch is assembled using 70-80 mm self-tapping screws, which connect the arches to the bars.

The front part of the arch. We attach thin three-layer plywood 140 mm wide and about one and a half meters long with finishing nails, the heads of which must be recessed and thoroughly putty. The casing for the upper part of the arch is made composite (its width is 70 mm, and its thickness is 12-16 mm), two parts on each side and immediately glued to the arch, the joint in the upper part is closed decorative element. Ready arch sand it out.

The vertical bars of the box are made 140 mm wide, and the height depends on the height of the opening; it is better to make it with a margin and saw it off at the bottom during installation. The platband of the box must match the width and thickness of the platband of the upper part of the arch. We connect all three parts so that there is no displacement. We will place two dowels (10 mm in diameter) at the ends of the vertical bars; to do this, glue a transverse bar (15-20 mm thick) in the upper part, and make holes in the ends of the upper part. We cover the joints with cornices, which we install on three sides. The cornice is made 10-15 mm higher than the joint.
