What paint should I use to paint ceramic tiles?

Over time, the tiles fade and lose their former beauty. Since it is not always possible to make repairs, tile paint will help to renew the coating. You can transform any type of tile, but it is important to remember that the paint for bathroom tiles must be durable and moisture resistant.

The choice of paint for tiles must be approached with the utmost seriousness, since the quality and beauty of the new design will depend on this. Therefore, before purchasing, it is recommended to consult with a specialist who will tell you which coating will be optimal for a particular room.

The choice of coating largely depends on the reason why the owner wants to change the design. Goals can be of the following nature:

  • Aesthetic considerations– old tiles laid in the kitchen or bathroom look unpresentable or faded. If you don’t have money for new tiles, ceramic tile paint comes to the rescue.
  • For waterproofing purposes– the paint will reliably protect the floor or wall covering from moisture and ensure complete sealing of the seams.
  • Change of style - painting floor or wall tiles will help you radically change the interior, while emphasizing the overall palette of existing shades, and you can also add new elements.
  • Decoration – the ability to create various images, unobtrusive patterns and ornaments.
  • Repair - if the furniture and interior items are updated, it is not at all necessary to change the tiles. The coating can simply be painted.

If the tiles have a beautiful appearance, it makes sense to use sealed grout for the joints, after removing the old one. It is also worth remembering that even the most durable coatings will still peel off over time when exposed to temperature changes and high humidity.

Suitable paint types

When applying regular paint, after a while the coating will begin to peel and flake off. There are several types of tile paint that are mainly used to update old coatings:

  • Latex - has excellent adhesive properties. For dry rooms, you should choose acrylic-latex compounds; for waterproofing purposes, rubber paints are suitable. The coating has a high level of wear resistance and waterproofing, is odorless and absolutely harmless to health.

  • Epoxy is a more expensive option. Good adhesion, waterproof. The paint is firmly bonded to the coating and does not peel off over time.

  • Oil-based is also suitable, but requires the application of a primer.

  • Alkyd enamels have good adhesion and are used only in dry rooms.

  • Stained glass for glass and tiles– applied to a smooth, cleaned surface, without prior preparation. Having a high cost, it is used mainly for decorative purposes to create a beautiful design.

  • Polyurethane – resistant to temperature changes and humidity, does not peel off and is wear-resistant.

The primer for applying epoxy and polyurethane enamels must be based on organic solvents. Water-based primer is not suitable in this case.

Preparatory work

First of all, you need to prepare the following tools:

  • hard bristle brush;
  • cleaning products;
  • primer mixture;
  • roller, brushes of different sizes;
  • tile paint.

Having decided on the paint for the tiles, you need to do several preparatory work, including:

  • Removing splashes, dust and lime deposits from tiles. For this purpose, abrasive powder or an acidic detergent is suitable, which will do an excellent job of removing old dirt.
  • Wash off the remaining detergent with a wet cloth, then wait until the surface is completely dry.
  • Degreasing tiles with acetone or gasoline.
  • Cleaning the surface with sandpaper for better adhesion of paint to a glossy surface.
  • Removing dust with a dry cloth or vacuum cleaner.
  • Surface primer.
  • Sealing seams with putty.

First of all, you need to clean the seams, since this is where the largest amount of dirt accumulates. If improperly cleaned after painting, mold, mildew and other microorganisms may appear in these areas.

Painting technology

To avoid many problems and inconveniences when painting tiles in the bathroom, experts advise painting only those walls that do not come into contact with water. It is better to apply a decorative pattern to the rest of the surface.

To paint a pattern on ceramic tiles, paint should be applied in 2 layers. In this case, the second one is applied only after the first one has completely dried. Repainting is carried out strictly in a perpendicular direction.

If the surface needs to be diversified with ornaments or different lines, you can use masking tape, which is glued only after applying the base coat of paint. Once completely dry, the masking tape can be easily removed.

Painting is best done using a foam roller, which will allow you to quickly paint a large area. If you plan to create various designs, it is better to use regular brushes.

If we talk about the bathroom, then it is better to limit its use until the paint has completely dried. Otherwise, the surface may be smeared or damaged, which will cause further development of fungus, mold, etc.

When purchasing tiles for your bathroom, you can immediately select a special tile for painting. This will make further painting of the surface much easier.

Protecting the new coating

To securely adhere the paint, it is recommended to apply a top coat of clear water-based urethane varnish. After complete drying, the composition is applied to the surface in several layers. These manipulations will help maintain the beautiful and aesthetic appearance of the coating for a long time. Before application, it is better to check whether the paint is compatible with the varnish coating. This can be tested on a piece of plywood sheet or glass.

Design Variations

Today, there are quite a few options for painting porcelain tiles. Depending on the intended design and your own imagination, you can bring to life the most daring and original ideas. There are several types of painting:

  • Major – complete replacement of the color palette, images and other patterns.
  • Revitalization of colors– without wanting to change the overall picture, the shade of the walls and floor can be refreshed and made more saturated. In this case, restoration of individual fragments of the design is possible.
  • Formation of patterns– decoration with ornaments can be carried out both over the entire surface, and individual tiled elements can be highlighted in fragments.
  • Drawings - can be made both on the walls and on the floor covering. Non-bulky images will give the room a special charm. Stencils can also be used.
  • Images – painting tiles allows you to bring almost any design to life.

Paint from different manufacturers and types (20 photos)

Paint (Enamel) is a multicomponent product consisting of a binder (base), pigment, solvent and filler. Depending on the binder, paint and varnish coatings are divided into alkyd, epoxy, oil, acrylic, nitrocellulose, etc.

What is this article about?

Selection of paint and varnish material (LCM) for painting ceramic tiles

When purchasing a paint and varnish material for painting ceramic tiles, it is necessary to pay attention to its physical and chemical characteristics, conditions of application and further operation of the coating. All necessary information is displayed on the product packaging. Domestic manufacturers, as well as manufacturers in the CIS countries, use a code in their practice that will help the buyer make the choice of paint easier.

At the beginning of the code, the type of paintwork material will be indicated - paint, enamel, primer, etc. After that there is a letter code indicating the binder material (GF - glypthal, PF - pentaphthalic, NC - nitrocellulose MA - oil, AK - polyacrylate, AS - alkyd-acrylic, EP - epoxy, etc.). Next, after the letter code, there is a digital code, in which the first digit indicates the physical and chemical operating conditions of the paintwork:

  • 1- weatherproof (for outdoor use)
  • 2- limited weather resistance (for indoor use)
  • 3- conservation paints
  • 4- waterproof
  • 5- special enamels and paints
  • 6- oil and petrol resistant
  • 7- chemical resistant
  • 8- heat resistant
  • 9- electrically insulating and electrically conductive.

Example: the code “GF-115 red enamel” will mean that it is an alkyd enamel on a glyphthalic base “GF”, for external use “1”, red, 15 is the factory catalog number.

This code is not used on packaging of paints and varnishes from foreign manufacturers. Therefore, you will need to contact the seller for advice.

Types of paints and varnishes for painting ceramic tiles

Oil paint

Oil paint for tiles (MA) is the most budget option for painting tiles. Can be applied by brush, roller or spray. The drying speed of this paint is more than 24 hours and will vary depending on the type of drying oil (oil) used as a binder, the type of pigment, and also on the drying temperature. Coatings based on oil paints are characterized by low hardness and low water resistance, and are susceptible to destruction when exposed to alkalis (soda, washing powders, etc.). This type of coating is recommended for painting tiles on indoor walls.

Attention! Coatings based on oil paints are short-lived and cracks appear over time.

Alkyd enamel

Alkyd enamels are a relatively inexpensive product. Coatings made from alkyd enamel, compared to coatings based on oil paints, have greater weather resistance, resistance to detergents and mineral oils. They are characterized by high hardness, shine and moisture resistance. They can withstand temperature changes ranging from -50 to +60 ºС. The protective properties of such coatings are maintained for 4 years. Alkyd enamels with the addition of rosin are used to paint floor tiles.

Pentaphthalic and Glypthal enamels

Pentaphthalic and Glypthal enamels (PF, GF) have similar performance characteristics and are the most common alkyd enamels used for painting ceramic tiles. These include GF-115, PF-115 and PF-266. Enamels GF-115 and PF-115, due to their high weather resistance, are intended for outdoor use. PF-266 is used only for painting indoors, however, due to the high hardness of the coating, the enamel is recommended for painting ceramics located on the floor. It is recommended to use FL-03-K, 138, FL-OZH as a primer for these enamels.

Nitropaint

Nitroenamel (Nitropaint) (NC) is made on the basis of nitrocellulose varnish. This paint for ceramic tiles belongs to the segment of inexpensive paints and varnishes that have a high drying speed (10-30 minutes) at room temperature. It is recommended to apply nitro enamel to the tiles using a sprayer; when painting with a brush, due to rapid drying, smudges and unevenness may form. Due to its high hardness, the paint coating has low elasticity, which will subsequently lead to the formation of chips from physical impact on the painted surface. One of the advantages of using nitro enamels is the high smoothness and specularity of the resulting coating. It is used for painting both indoors and outdoors.

When painting tiles with nitro paint in a damp room, whitish stains may appear on the paintwork.

Attention! Nitroenamel is toxic and fire hazardous, so work must be carried out in a respirator and in a well-ventilated area.

Acrylic paints

Acrylic paints (water-based tile paint) are the most popular paint materials for painting ceramic tiles. These include polyacrylate (AK) and alkyd-acrylic paint (AC). Their disadvantage is their high price compared to alkyd enamels and oil paints.

Alkyd paints have high moisture resistance and weather resistance. Antiseptic agents, such as penotex, are added to some types of paint, which prevents mold from appearing on painted surfaces.

They are used for painting both indoors and outdoors.

Acrylic paints can be used to paint tiles in rooms with high humidity (bathroom, bathhouse, sauna, swimming pool, etc.). Both matte and glossy paints are available in different colors.

Glass paints

To apply decorative images (drawings) on tiles, so-called glass paints are used. It is not practical to use them for continuous painting of surfaces due to their high cost. Glass paints combine well with each other, retain color brightness and shade contrast, and are resistant to moisture. The drying time for this paint is 3 hours. After applying the design, it is recommended to apply a protective layer of clear varnish on top.

Epoxy enamels

Epoxy enamels (EP) – coatings based on them can be classified as special-purpose coatings with high performance qualities. They are recommended for painting tiles if there is a need to ensure such properties as: resistance to mechanical stress; resistance to alkalis, solvents and petroleum products; waterproof, weather resistant; dielectricity; fire resistance.

These coatings have high decorative qualities, resistance to wear, high temperatures and electricity. Retain their protective properties for 6 years.

Are you looking to update the look of old ceramic tiles without dismantling them and completely replacing them? Then you can, for example, paint it. For these purposes, various types of paints and technologies are used, which allows not only to decorate the walls with original decor, but also to radically change the interior of the room. It is not necessary to completely repaint the tiles. It is enough to paint just a few tiles or apply an original design to some of them using a special stencil. In the flight of creative fantasies, you should not forget about the choice of paint itself. Moreover, the modern market today offers a wide variety. We'll talk about this in detail later.

In order for the result of painting ceramic tiles to please you for a long time, you need to take into account some features in advance when choosing paint, as well as the secrets of working with it.

  • You should choose a paint based not only on its cost, color scheme, ease of use, but also taking into account where the surface to be painted is located: indoors or outdoors, in a dry or damp place, etc. Depending on this, choose regular or moisture-resistant paint.
  • The choice of tool is also very important for the work: rollers or brushes. Rollers of various shapes and sizes are suitable for painting large surfaces, and brushes are suitable for creating designs.
  • Before you start painting ceramic tiles, they must be thoroughly cleaned of any contaminants by degreasing the surface with a solvent, and then thoroughly primed with an epoxy primer. In this way, the adhesion efficiency of paint to the surface being painted can be significantly increased.

Types of paints for ceramic tiles

To paint ceramic tiles, specialists usually use acrylic, epoxy, oil, polymer and other types of paints. Let's consider the features of using each of them.

Acrylic paints

  1. The main advantage of acrylic paints is, first of all, their lack of unpleasant odor.
  2. In addition, such paints are economical in consumption, water-soluble and, if necessary, can be easily and quickly washed off hands or the surface being painted.
  3. For work, you can use a regular roller or brush, depending on what kind of design you have in mind.

Epoxy paints

  1. Epoxy compounds are sold at any hardware store.
  2. The wide range and color range provide great opportunities for the implementation of any ideas, including the design of ceramic tiles.
  3. These paints dry quite quickly and have good durability, which is good news.
  4. However, before starting painting, it is necessary to thoroughly prime the surface to be painted.

Oil paints

  1. It's no secret that oil paints, unlike acrylic paints, have a strong odor and take a very long time to dry.
  2. However, they are quite resistant and durable, especially if the surface to be painted has been well prepared and a layer of varnish has been applied on top of the paint.

Polymer paints

Polymer paints are not often used for painting tiles.

  1. They can only be suitable if the surface to be painted has been carefully prepared in advance.
  2. In this case, a special paint fixative must be used. For this, regular varnish is suitable, which is more affordable.

In addition to the above types of paints for ceramic tiles, you can also use auto enamel or moisture-resistant water-dispersion latex paint. Car enamel, just like polymer paint, must be secured with varnish. Water-dispersion paint is suitable for rooms with high humidity. It also holds up well to repeated surface washing.
