What kinds of garage roofs are there on your own? What is the best way to cover a garage roof? Prices for different types of slate

It’s not difficult to build a simple garage roof with your own hands. But to do this correctly, you need to prepare well in advance. After all, you will have to take into account a number of important points - when and why to do insulation, whether a vapor barrier is needed and what to do to eliminate possible leaks. In addition, depending on the condition and location of the building, the construction strategy will differ significantly.

What should you think about before installing a roof?

The first thing you need to decide is the purpose of the garage. If it is unheated and will be used only for storing the car, the roof can be anything as long as it does not leak. But if the garage is planned to be warm or will be warmed up from time to time, used as a workshop or a local “café for car enthusiasts”, the roof must be insulated!
Uninsulated metal roof will condense, providing an unforgettable indoor rain experience in winter. A wooden or concrete one will heat up, melting the snow outside. And this is fraught with ice stalactites and stalagmites, which will have to be knocked down regularly. And it’s good if the roof slope is on the back wall, and not in front of the gate.

If you have a hood, it is also better to insulate it and raise it above the roof - so as not to drown the same snow.

Don't forget about minimum inclination with mandatory drainage for flat roofs. Otherwise, rain and snow may linger in uneven areas, which cannot be avoided when self-construction. And this is fraught possible leaks or the destruction of the roof after a few years.

And, of course, it is better to correctly assess your strengths in advance and draw up an estimate. Because sometimes cheap option not suitable due to its complexity in the device with my own hands, and expensive material can be replaced with something cheaper. After all, a garage does not require a special margin of safety and high environmental friendliness of the roof.

Do-it-yourself concrete roof for a garage

The simplest option is to lay concrete slabs. But you can’t do it without a crane. If its use is impossible for some reason, you will have to do concrete screed on one's own.
For this you will need:

Among the tools you should think about in advance:

It greatly simplifies working with concrete, especially if your hand is not yet full, as is clearly shown in the video:

Pouring a concrete garage roof

So, all the materials are stored, the tools are ready and you can start building the roof. For this:

  1. Floor beams - pipes, channels or I-beams - are laid on the walls. In the first two options, the roof will be poured on top. If the beams are made of I-beams, boards or metal sheets, onto which concrete will be poured. When installing an insulated roof, foam plastic can be laid under the screed.
  2. The reinforcing mesh is knitted. It is important not to forget that the rods should not touch the formwork, because then rust may begin to appear at the ends. But reinforcement can be welded to the floor beams. The advantage of I-beams is the ability to fill “layer by layer” - one row at a time. This is especially important when pouring it yourself, since it’s definitely not possible to do the entire roof at once.
  3. The formwork is fixed. To make it easier to tear it off from the concrete, the inner walls must be coated with used machine oil or any other cheap oil. The boards should fit as tightly as possible! Concrete “milk” coming through the cracks significantly worsens the quality of the monolithic floor.
  4. The reinforced mesh is poured with concrete mixture, be sure to be bayoneted and smoothed according to the rule. If possible, order ready-made concrete mixture To fill the entire roof at once, you must have at least two assistants to level the mixture with shovels. It’s better to use a deep vibrator when pouring like this, which will help quickly remove air from the mixture.
  5. The concrete screed is covered with plastic film and must be watered regularly. Without watering, concrete will not gain the necessary strength.
  6. After the screed has set, all cracks must be closed. This is done by ironing - it crumbles onto the surface thin layer cement and rubbed in with a regular paint brush. The procedure continues until all cracks are sealed.
  7. All joints in the screed are coated with mastic reinforced with serpyanka. The same applies to the exit point of the ventilation pipe and the upper ribs of the channels.
  8. To provide required level waterproof, built-up waterproofing is laid on top of the concrete. Be sure to cover the ends of the concrete floor! To do this, the concrete is coated with a primer, and the waterproofing itself is spread in two layers - for reliability. To ensure that the waterproofing does not lag behind, the edges can be pressed with aluminum strips. The dowels are filled with bitumen, and the planks themselves are coated with the same sickle-reinforced mastic.

Concrete roof restoration

But what to do if you inherited a garage? And along with the building, the new owner also received associated problems in the form of a leaking roof and crumbling concrete floor? In this case, restoring the roof will not be much simpler than pouring a new one:

You can also restore a leaking roof by making a ceiling of corrugated board or slate on top. To do this, without removing the old roof covering, logs are laid and secured with anchors. Joints around the perimeter are sealed polyurethane foam- for sealing and to prevent the entire ceiling from being lifted by the wind.

The sheathing is fixed to the joists. If the metal is thin, then it is advisable to do the lathing frequently. The edges are protected with metal corners that prevent moisture from leaking from below. After the bed is made roof covering, a wind strip must be installed.

It is also called end - it protects the ends of the roof from water entering from above.

A very accessible description of the restoration of a garage roof using corrugated sheets is shown in the video:

DIY wooden garage roof

If concrete work seems complex and time-consuming, the garage roof can be made of wood. More precisely, the rafter system will be wooden, but the roofing itself can be anything from metal to ceramic.

Shed garage roof

This is the simplest option that does not require serious calculations and special construction skills. The only thing you have to take into account with a detached garage is the prevailing wind direction. The lower edge of a pitched roof should be on the windward side - that is, on the side from which the wind most often blows. Otherwise, strong gusts can simply tear off the roof.

This type of roof is extremely easy to build:

  1. A support board is attached to the wall of the house above the level of the garage wall. With a purlin width of up to 4.5 meters, the rafters will only be placed on support board and the wall of the garage. If the width of the garage is planned to be up to 6 m, you will also have to attach a support at the same level with the wall of the garage, on which the rafter leg will rest, providing support for the long rafter.
  2. If the walls of the garage are brick or concrete, a mauerlat made of 15x10 cm or 15x15 cm timber is attached along the upper edge. It provides the necessary strength to the entire roofing structure, redistributing the load on the wall. To prevent the wood from rotting, the timber must be treated with an antiseptic and several layers of waterproofing placed under it.
  3. The rafters are attached to the mauerlat either with an outlet beyond the wall or without an outlet. You can calculate the length of the rafters and the angle of inclination using the table.
  4. The waterproofing is laid directly on the rafters. It is fixed on top with counter-lattice bars, on which the lathing is then placed. The waterproofing is laid with an overlap; the overlaps are taped with butyl rubber tape. You can also place tape under the counter-lattice as a seal to seal the puncture sites.
  5. Depending on the chosen roofing covering and the angle of inclination, the sheathing can be either continuous or sparse. This should be taken into account, otherwise the roof may simply fail under critical loads.

Gable roof garage

This option for a DIY device is much more complicated and requires serious calculations. Yes, and more material will also be required. For example, insufficient thickness of rafters can lead to sagging of the roof, resulting in snow stagnation and bursting rafters due to weight. And even with required thickness a large number of knots in a timber can lead to the same results. But such a garage looks presentable, and the space under the roof can be used for storing household equipment.

Device principle gable roof:

  1. It is important to decide on the height of the roof - if the roof is too high, the wind will try to topple it, and if it is too low, it can lift it up.
  2. The rafter system is assembled - triangles consisting of rafter legs and tie rods. For garages more than 6 meters wide, more a complex system using crossbars or headstocks.
  3. How to collect individual elements on the ground, raising them as needed, and immediately on the walls. The first option is more suitable for garages, since the ceiling does not spread and in this case it is extremely inconvenient to walk along the edges of the walls.
  4. First, the outer rafters are installed at the ends of the garage. A cord is stretched between them at the highest point, which determines the level of the roof. After this, you can attach all the other rafter legs. They are fixed with temporary jibs.
  5. The ridge girder is attached last. To prevent the rafters from moving, they are secured using the cutting method. Also to simplify the work ridge beam can be fixed with building corners without cutting out corners.
  6. The waterproofing is rolled out and fixed with a batten along the rafters. If you use a waterproofing membrane, it can act as a temporary roof for two to three months, depending on the manufacturer. You need to pay attention to ultraviolet resistance, otherwise the waterproofing can quickly become unusable, simply starting to crumble.
  7. The sheathing is being filled. The frequency depends on the roof covering. It is better to do it more often than to repair the roof urgently if the roof cannot withstand the pressure of snow.

Regardless of the chosen roof covering, Special attention worth your time ridge knot. A poorly made ridge is a guarantee of a leaking roof and the formation of condensation, since the ridge serves as ventilation for the roofing pie.

For example, for a metal tile roof, the distance between the sheathing in the ridge assembly should be no less than 3 cm and no more than 5 cm. And the waterproofing should be located on the roof slopes at a distance of 20 cm. The ridge itself is laid on a breathable insulation and fastened with self-tapping screws.

For a ventilated roof ridge with a soft roof, it can be used as ready-made solutions in the form of a ridge aerator, or make the structure yourself. The first method is much simpler, but significantly increases the cost of construction.

The second option will require a little more effort, but will save you money. The construction of a ventilated ridge with your own hands begins with cutting ventilation gap in a continuous sheathing. Next, 5x5 cm bars are attached above the ventilated hole, on which they are laid OSB sheets. To protect the roofing pie from dust and insects, you can also attach a metal mesh that is wrapped around the bars.

conclusions

To summarize, we can draw the following conclusions when building a garage roof with your own hands:

  • it is better to restore a concrete garage roof using corrugated sheeting - it is easier and cheaper;
  • concrete work must be carried out with an assistant, otherwise the roof will have to be poured in parts and the joints sealed;
  • roof insulation is a must for protection against condensation;
  • For concrete roof built-up waterproofing is used on concrete floors, for wooden floors - windproof membrane, preventing the formation of condensation;
  • the thickness of the rafters should be sufficient to withstand the maximum snow load; if the roof slope is small, it is better to do it with a safety margin;
  • if you choose corrugated sheeting as the cheapest option, you should pay close attention to the quality of the decorative coating - unscrupulous manufacturers may peel it off within a year;

A reliable garage roof is an important condition for the safety of the building. Roofing in a garage they are basically carried out in the same way as in other buildings, but there are some nuances.

Types of garage roofs

Based on the design features, several types of roofs can be distinguished. Based on the presence of roof slopes, there are:

  • pitched;
  • flat.

A flat roof requires a continuous elastic covering made of polymer-bitumen materials that are resistant to temperature changes. Support parts for similar design serve as the walls of the building. Screeds or slabs can be used as a base. In some cases, they do it on a flat roof hanging garden. In this case, the structure will be operational.

A pitched roof is formed by bases, the angle of inclination of which can be from 10 to 60°. The structures focus on the rafter mechanism. For a garage you can build the following types roofs:

  1. With one ramp. The structure has an emphasis on the walls of the building, and therefore one of the walls must be higher than the others in order to be able to create a slope. The height difference is calculated by the formula: H = tg α x s, where s is the width of the building, tg α is the tangent of the angle of inclination, the value of which can be calculated on a calculator or taken from Bradis tables. The size of the roof slope depends on the climate of the region: the amount of snow and the strength of the constant wind.

    A pitched roof is formed by walls of different heights

  2. With two slopes. This option is most often used when constructing garages, as it allows you to increase usable area buildings at the expense attic space. A roof of this type can be made with or without an overlap, but it must rest on a mauerlat - a horizontal frame made of bars that combines the rafter mechanism into a solid structure.

    The gable roof increases usable space garage due to attic space

  3. Hip roof. It is used quite rarely for garages, but in some cases it is used to maintain a uniform style of territory development. In this case, the rafter mechanism will not have a ridge run, since the roof frame is formed by four identical slopes.

    The hip roof consists of four identical slopes

  4. Attic. This type of design allows you to arrange above garage building additional room that can be used by the owner for own needs. For example, you can create a workshop, storage room, office or guest room. It differs from the attic space in the height of the ceiling: at least 1.5 m. This roof project is considered expensive, since it requires steam, hydro and thermal insulation. It is also necessary to install non-standard shaped double-glazed windows. The rafter pair will have a sharp bend, which may result in a decrease in the strength of the building.

    Minimum ceiling rise in the room under mansard roof is 1.5 m

Materials and tools for manufacturing

Proper construction of a roof with a single slope implies maintaining the slope required for the unhindered drainage of melt water after rain or snowfall. The height of the supporting parts should be different. The slope should be selected taking into account the following factors:

  1. Climate of the region in which the events are held construction works. It is not practical to manufacture flat roofs with a slope of 5–7° in regions with big amount snow. However, they are suitable for places where there is strong wind. Roofs with a slope of 20–25° should not be constructed over detached garages in regions with moderate winds. Such structures can only be erected over attached buildings.
  2. Type of coating material:
    • when making roofs with a slope of 15° or less, it is necessary to use materials in rolls - polymer, polymer-bitumen or bitumen;
    • if the slope is up to 10°, then the roof should be installed in 2 layers;
    • at an angle of inclination of 17–20°, metal sheets fastened with a seam, flat or wave-shaped slate are used;
    • for roofs with a slope of 25° or more, it is better to choose profiled sheets or metal tiles.
  3. Site design. Architectural features require the use of roofing of the same color and shape throughout the entire territory.

When calculating the area of the slope, it is necessary to take into account the installation of overhangs that protect the structure from rain.

Overhangs are extensions of the roof structure that protect the building from rain and snow.

It is important to consider the following nuances:

  1. There should be overhangs of 55–60 cm above the log house.
  2. Overhang over clad iron frame structure should be at least 15–20 cm.
  3. The overhang over a building made of concrete or brick should be 35–40 cm.

In some cases, the size of the overhangs is made larger to form a canopy from the entrance or along the wall. The canopy will need to be supported on support posts made on a separate or common base with the garage.

Garage roof covering material

The garage roof can be covered different materials. You need to choose based on operating conditions and financial capabilities. For example, a building with a tile roof will cost much more than a building covered with slate. At the same time, laying metal tiles takes a lot of time. The most commonly used materials are:

  1. Ruberoid. This is a material based on thick or lightweight cardboard impregnated with bitumen. It is covered with refractory bitumen, after which it is added minerals. Tensile load - 26–28 kg. One roll is enough to cover approximately 10 m2 of roof. Roofing material can withstand heating up to 80° for two hours. The material can be used with a slope slope of at least 5°. The rolled sheets are joined with an adhesive mixture or mastic in several layers or fused using a gas torch. Ruberoid is recommended to be used if a garage with a roof is being made complex shape. Main advantages of the material:
  2. Bituminous shingles. This is an artificial soft material for roofing, which is based on fiberglass impregnated with rubber bitumen with a powder of basalt or slate. Service period - up to 50 years. The decorative effect of the coating is achieved through a wide range of colors and cutting shapes. Bituminous shingles have all the advantages of roofing felt, but have a more aesthetic appearance. Additional benefit is the ability to replace individual fragments when performing repairs. The material can be installed on the roof with minimum slope from 2°.

    Roof from bitumen shingles has a much more aesthetic appearance compared to roofing felt

  3. Ondulin. This is a molded mass based on cellulose, bitumen, various pigments and fillers. After drying, sheets with waves become resistant to chemical attack. The advantages include low weight and low cost. Period possible exploitation- up to 15 years. On sale can be found in the material different colors. To fix the sheets, special fasteners should be used.

    Ondulin is well suited for garage roofs because it is a lightweight and beautiful material

  4. Slate. It consists of asbestos cement sheets with a surface in the form of waves. Despite not the most aesthetic appearance and hygroscopicity, it has quite a lot of advantages:
  5. Iron sheets. The material has a polymer coating and is strong and durable. The sheets are fastened using a folded method into a lock, and therefore experience in carrying out this work is required and special tool. The permissible slope is 19–30°. On metal roofing it is advisable to apply additional protective covering, which can be arranged using acrylic paint.
  6. Profiled sheeting. These are wave-shaped metal sheets that are laid overlapping in one wave on each side and attached to the sheathing roofing screws, which significantly simplifies the installation process. The recommended tilt angle is from 8°.

    You can cover your garage roof with a profiled sheet in just one day.

  7. Metal tiles. It is one of the most popular roofing materials. In terms of its properties, metal tiles are similar to corrugated sheets, but they look much more attractive. The coating consists of profiled iron sheets about 0.5 mm thick with smooth or rough surface, protected by a layer of polymer coating. Average term service - 30 years. The minimum slope is 14°.

    From a distance the coating resembles natural tiles, but costs much less

Garage roof tool

In order for the work to be carried out efficiently, you need to prepare the following tools:

  • hammer;
  • a wooden mallet;
  • jack for lifting material onto the roof;
  • roulette;
  • level for taking measurements;
  • spatula if you plan to plaster and paint the garage;
  • metal scissors if you plan to use corrugated sheets;
  • saw;
  • axe.

Some metal roofing materials will require hole preparation. In this case, you should add a countersink and a countersink to the list.

DIY garage roof installation

The roof for a garage building consists of the following elements:

  1. Rafter mechanism. It is used as a base on which all parts are fixed. The structure will take on the general loads of the roof.

    The rafter frame sets the shape of the roof and is its load-bearing part.

  2. Lathing. Serves as a support for fastening the roofing.

    The sheathing pitch depends on the roofing material used

  3. Materials for hydro-, steam- and thermal insulation. Required to retain heat and protect the building from moisture.

    In order for the roof to retain heat and protect the garage from moisture, you need to lay insulation materials in a certain sequence

  4. Finish coating.

    Laying the finishing coating is the final stage of roof construction

  5. Additional parts to strengthen the rafter mechanism.

If you plan to build a garage with a pitched roof, then you need to place a mauerlat or logs on the upper end parts. The elements will be used as support for the rafter mechanism. They are fixed to the walls using wire through anchor bolts. The fasteners must be driven into the wall or embedded in the masonry.

The main parts of the rafter mechanism of a gable roof are the rafter legs. They can be:

  • suspended (supported by the outer parts);
  • layered (have intermediate parts for support).

If the span that is formed supporting walls, has a length of less than 5 m, then only horizontal elements can be installed on the rafter frame. They are called crossbars. In the places where the mauerlat and rafter legs are attached, you need to prepare holes for fastening. The supports are installed in these holes and securely fixed with nails or anchor bolts.

Mauerlat installation

Laying the roof for the garage should begin with the installation of the Mauerlat. For this, a 15x10 cm beam is used. If the walls of the garage are made of timber, then the upper crown can be used as a Mauerlat.

  1. For walls made of brick or concrete blocks, a reinforcing belt is made. Steel pins are mounted into it, onto which the Mauerlat will then be put on. The design of the armored belt is required not only to distribute the loads from the roof, but also to horizontally align the end surfaces of the walls. Without this element in different parts Roof slope may vary.

    Before pouring concrete, metal threaded rods are welded to the reinforcement frame so that their protruding part is several centimeters longer than the mauerlat beam

  2. Concrete is poured into the formwork, its surface is finally leveled, and then the structure is covered with a layer of roofing felt and left until completely dry (at least 7 days).

    After leveling the concrete layer, the studs should extend out of it to a height exceeding the thickness of the Mauerlat by 3–5 cm

  3. The mauerlat beams are mounted. At the locations of the studs, holes of the appropriate diameter are drilled, and the beams are put on the studs. The nuts are screwed on top.

    After the Mauerlat beam is laid on the armored belt, it is secured using nuts screwed onto the ends of the studs

  4. The rafters are fixed to the mauerlat. The simplest method is two nails with a length of 150 mm, located crosswise, or iron staples. For better fastening, you can use metal plates.

    With help metal plates you can make a sliding mount that will allow the elements to move within small limits during frame shrinkage and seasonal deformations of the building

Marking rafters and making sheathing

At this stage you will need to mark the rafters:

Installation of rafters for a pitched roof is not difficult. When installing a rafter mechanism, you should be guided by the following principles:

As the base of the garage roof, a lathing made of slats or iron purlins should be used under the covering material. The sheathing is selected as follows:

The sheathing must be done from bottom to top.

Each batten should be attached to one nail to the rafter leg.

Insulation and waterproofing of garage roof

External insulation of a garage roof should be done in the following sequence:

Internal roof insulation is performed as follows:

  1. First of all, a waterproofing layer is performed. The joints are sealed with tape.

    It is better to lay the waterproofing film with a slight sag to avoid excessive stress due to temperature deformations

  2. If you plan to use polystyrene foam, then a sheathing must be made under it. Next, the sheets are attached using self-tapping screws. During the process, you need to glue the joints with an adhesive mixture.
  3. If mineral wool is used, it is placed in the gaps between the rafters.

    Plates mineral wool must enter the gaps between the joists by surprise and stay there without additional fastening

  4. The insulation material is covered with a vapor barrier film. The joints are taped with construction tape.

    The vapor barrier film protects the insulation from warm, moist air escaping from the lower rooms

Care should be taken to insulation material did not come into contact with the waterproofing film. There should be a gap between them. To do this, a counter lath made of 30x40 or 50x50 mm bars is stuffed on top of the film. If a superdiffusion membrane is used for waterproofing, a ventilation gap is not required.

Insulation of the roof inside can be done using penoizol.

Penoizol is applied to the roof by spraying

The foam material should be applied by spraying. It will penetrate into all gaps, expand as it dries and be distributed throughout the entire base. As a result, there will be no gaps into which moisture or cold could penetrate. Penoizol is one of the best materials for insulation. It eliminates the appearance of fungus and mold. The only drawback is the high cost. However, it should be remembered that the period of possible use of the material is 70 years.

As a waterproofing material pitched roofs Bitumen mastic is most often used. The coating distributed over the roof surface can form a base with excellent waterproofing parameters. It is also possible to use anti-condensation film, which is made on the basis of viscose. This option is most often suitable for roofs that are covered with profiled sheets.

Waterproofing is carried out after the rafter system and sheathing have been completed, and the insulation has been laid:

If the roof is not ventilated, then the material for waterproofing should not be an ordinary film, but one with condensation protection. It is also possible to use a modern vapor-permeable membrane, which will remove excess water vapor to the outside. The waterproofing process can be facilitated by using a self-fusing roof. However, it is important to ensure that the coating material does not overheat.

Laying roofing

One of the popular options is the installation of roofing material made of roofing material.

Step-by-step guide to laying roofing felt

Roofing felt is mounted on a continuous sheathing. The material can perform two functions at once:

  • protect interior spaces from precipitation;
  • create a continuous budget coverage.

Ruberoid is a soft rolled material for roofing, so it is easy to lay. To reliably protect the roof, roofing felt must be installed in 2-3 layers. The first layer is used as a lining, and subsequent layers are used as the main coating.

In addition to roofing felt, other roll-type materials can be used. They are laid out on mastic or fused using a gas burner. The second method requires increased attention, because it is a fire hazard. Such work should be performed by a person with experience.

Sequence of installation of corrugated roofing sheets

Corrugated sheeting has little weight, so it is possible to save on the manufacture of the rafter mechanism and sheathing. Rafter legs can be made from bars 100x30, 50x30 or 50x50 mm. The choice must be made based on the load on the rafter mechanism. To create quality roofing, it needs to be insulated and waterproofing material laid. Sequencing:

  1. Waterproofing is laid on the surface of the frame. In this case, it is allowed to use polyethylene film with a thickness of 200 microns. The film is fixed to the sheathing using thin strips with a cross-section of 20x20 mm. The distance between the slats should be such that the profiled sheet can fit tightly on the parts.

    For laying profiled sheets with a thickness of 0.4–0.5 mm, a sheathing pitch of 50 cm is sufficient

  2. Placed on top of the waterproofing material metal roofing. The corrugated sheets are secured to the sheathing using special self-tapping screws with rubber linings. For convenience, you can pre-drill small holes in the base. Self-tapping screws must be screwed in without tension so that the material can contract and expand with temperature changes.

    Sheets of corrugated sheets are fastened with roofing screws into the recess of the wave

  3. The roof is insulated from the inside of the garage. The process of insulation under corrugated sheeting is completely similar to that described above.
  4. Mounted on the inside of the roof vapor barrier film And finishing coat walls and ceiling of the attic.

Features of laying seam and slate roofing

Laying a seam roof made of galvanized metal is possible only if you have certain skills and special devices. It is not recommended to do this yourself.

A slate roof can last more than 40 years. The material is laid in the same way as corrugated sheeting, however, slate has heavy weight. Accordingly, he needs a strong and reliable rafter mechanism. Rafters must be made of wooden blocks with a cross-section of at least 100x80 mm.

Garage roof operation and maintenance

Soft surfaces are quite durable, but regular inspection of the substrate is recommended. Signs that indicate the need for repairs:

  1. Various mechanical damage: through abrasion, deep crack, burst hole.
  2. The appearance of depressions in which water or dirt can stagnate.
  3. Change in the appearance of the coating: the appearance of moss, mold or mildew.
  4. The occurrence of emergency delaminations at joints.

If these signs are present, it is recommended to have your roof repaired immediately. Experienced specialists They recommend that garage owners carry out regular maintenance of the structure at least once every 3 years. In this case, it will only be enough to eliminate minor flaws. If the roof will be left in disrepair for a long time, it may be necessary to complete replacement coverings.

Garage roof repair

The repair method depends on the type of roof and the degree of wear of the building. In private buildings, where the garage is located separately from the building, they use budget materials for roofing with long period services. Garages in cooperatives cannot be covered with profiled sheets or flexible tiles Therefore, soft bitumen-based materials are used. There are 3 options for repairing a garage roof:

  1. Using heated bitumen.
  2. Use of soft roofing material.
  3. Use of profiled sheets or tiles.

Before you begin repair work, you will need to remove debris from the roof and clean the areas that will need to be repaired. If the previously installed coating material can be used, then you will need to cut out the recesses in places with defects with an ax. If the roof was covered with roofing felt, then the structure must be inspected for cracks or swelling. Such defects must be eliminated before repair work.

When preparatory work will be completed, you can begin repair work:

Repairing a roof using roofing felt is quite simple. You will need to cut out several pieces of material and then use them to close the recesses. Each segment must correspond to the size of the recess. Sequencing:

Video: partial garage roof repair

It is entirely possible to build a durable garage roof yourself, but it is important to follow the instructions and choose quality and reliable materials at all stages of work.

The flat roof is used not only in residential buildings, but also in buildings for auxiliary and utility purposes. A garage with a flat roof can be not only practical and functional, but also an original structure. A flat roof is ideal for regions with low average monthly rainfall. However, even in areas with a lot of precipitation and snowy winters, the installation of a flat roof is possible, provided that it is strengthened load-bearing frame roofs and allowable loads on the floor system are taken into account.

Flat roofing has the following advantages:

  1. The building with a flat roof looks quite original and modern.
  2. On such a roof you can arrange a terrace, a recreation area, or use it according to the preferences of the owners.
  3. Since this design does not require a complex and expensive device rafter system, and also in view small area coating, garage owners receive significant savings on the construction of this part of the structure.
  4. If you compare a flat roof with pitched structures, then its repair is much simpler and does not require much time from you.

The only drawback of such roofs is the need for careful design and calculations future design taking into account the maximum permissible loads and types of roofing. If mistakes are made at this stage, the roof may not only leak, but will also not be able to withstand the weight of the snow cap and ice.

Attention! When designing flat roofs, a slight slope of the surface is provided for the drainage of melt and rainwater. This slope should be within 4°.

Types of flat roofs

Reinforced concrete floor slabs or metal profile beams can be used as the base of a flat roof. The structure of the roofing pie and the sequence of its implementation are directly related to the type of base used.

All flat roofs are divided into several subtypes depending on the method of forming the roofing pie:

  • monolithic roofs in classic design;
  • structures made of corrugated sheets;
  • inversion coatings, which can be classified as a special version of traditional roofing.

All of the above structures are divided into non-operational and exploitable, depending on strength and bearing capacity grounds.

Monolithic roofs

Monolithic roof structures for garages are considered classics. They belong to the category soft roofs. The roofing pie of such a roof consists of the following layers, located from bottom to top:

  1. The basis is reinforced concrete slab for arranging floors.
  2. A film vapor barrier is laid on top of it.
  3. Next comes the layer thermal insulation material. Typically, mineral wool is used for these purposes.
  4. A waterproofing roofing carpet is laid over the insulation. Rolled material containing bitumen is used as waterproofing.
  5. If the roof is serviceable, then a reinforced concrete screed is made. To strengthen it, a metal mesh is used. After this, if necessary, it can be laid additional layer waterproofing and tiling.

Sometimes to arrange a flat monolithic roof use metal beams of I-section with a height of 120-150 mm. The construction then proceeds as follows:

  1. Mounted on the lower flanges of these beams continuous lathing from wooden boards 2.5 cm thick, which are covered with roofing felt.
  2. After this, the reinforcing mesh is laid so that it is at a distance of 30-50 mm from the roofing material.
  3. Then the space between the beams is filled with concrete mixture.
  4. When the solution has set, a classic soft roll roof is installed.

Quite often, flat garage roofs are made from load-bearing corrugated sheet metal. This is the most economical option arrangement of a flat roof structure. But this option is only suitable for unused roofs. The design of the roofing pie in this case is practically no different from that described above, with the only difference being that an additional layer of heat insulation is required.

Classic design

Such a structure in cross-section looks like a multilayer structure, which must contain the following mandatory layers:

  • flat base (concrete, made of metal beams or supporting profiled sheet);
  • vapor barrier layer;
  • layer of thermal insulation material;
  • waterproofing carpet.

Polyethylene film is usually used as a vapor barrier. It reliably protects the roof structure from warm air vapors rising from the room and causing the formation condensation in the thermal insulation layer.

The following materials can be used as insulation:

  • expanded clay-gravel mixture;
  • mineral wool slabs;
  • polystyrene foam board insulation.

The waterproofing carpet is made from rolled materials produced on the basis of bitumen. You can also use sprayed membranes and special mastics for this.

Inversion roofs

The design of an inversion roof is fundamentally different from the options discussed above. In cross-section, such a roofing pie has the following layers:

  1. The base is a flat concrete slab.
  2. A waterproofing roofing carpet is attached to it using a bitumen primer.
  3. Next, a slab of rigid thermal insulation material is laid.
  4. This is followed by a drainage layer and a reinforced coating.
  5. After this, geotextiles are laid, which protect the insulation from the negative effects of external factors.
  6. The final layer of an inversion roof can be any material suitable for these purposes, for example, paving slabs, fertile layer with grass.

Important! An inversion roof can withstand significant loads, so it can be used as a serviceable roof.

General device rules

According to SNiP requirements flat roof should be performed with a minimum slope in one direction to avoid accumulation of sediment on the coating and leakage. It is worth remembering that even minimal amount moisture retained on the coating can lead to rapid deterioration of the roofing pie structures. This happens because due to repeated thawing and freezing of moisture, structures are deformed and destroyed.

To form the required angle of inclination, either load-bearing elements(beams or floor slabs), which are mounted in accordance with the required slope, or a special slope is made of expanded clay.

It is also worth remembering that between the insulation and the layer of deflection from bulk material There must be a separating layer. The soft roofing covering is laid in two layers with overlapping strips. In this case, the direction of laying the strips in two layers should be mutually perpendicular.

Every car enthusiast strives to equip his “iron horse” decent garage, which will preserve the excellent appearance of the car and significantly increase its service life. In addition to strong walls, a reliable floor and proper ventilation, it is very important to have a properly designed and high-quality garage roof. If you have the desire and knowledge of how to properly make a garage roof, then this type of work can be done independently. Let's take a closer look at the issues related to building a roof for a garage.

Requirements for a quality roof for a garage

  • Reliability of the design. The roof must withstand temperature changes and atmospheric loads corresponding to your climatic zone. It should be borne in mind that the heavier the ceiling, the stronger the walls must be to withstand this load.
  • Good hydro and thermal insulation. To prevent moisture from atmospheric precipitation from entering your car and creating favorable conditions for storing it.
  • Usage non-combustible materials. Garages are premises with an increased fire hazard, so it is extremely important to use non-combustible materials during their construction.
  • Attractive appearance. Allows the garage to harmoniously fit into the overall appearance of the estate. Moreover, if the garage is adjacent to the house, then its roof should be made in the same style.

Main types of garage roofs

  • Single slope (flat). It is the most simple view roofs for the garage. It is characterized by a small amount of required material. Most often, the slope angle is 20-30°, but if desired, the angle can be reduced to 10°, ensuring the required level of resistance of structures to precipitation. The most in a fast way The manufacture of this type of roof is the use of floor slabs, which also have low thermal conductivity and good level soundproofing. This option most optimally solves fire safety issues.

  • Gable. For all the beauty of this design, it is more complex to manufacture and expensive. Therefore, the choice of this option is made mainly for architectural reasons or due to the need to create an attic space for storing various things. When building a gable roof, it is necessary to make a ceiling and insulate it. The very design of this type of roof contributes to an excellent view of it from the side, so you should not use cheap roofing materials so as not to spoil the overall impression of the building.

Types of roofing materials

When constructing garage roofs, the most common roofing materials are:

Slate. Quite a popular roofing material with a long service life (up to 40 years). Made from lightweight asbestos-cement slabs with high degree wear resistance.

Compared to corrugated sheets, slate has more weight and requires a stronger and more reliable rafter system.

The slate is laid in rows from bottom to top, followed by an overlap (about 20 cm). Fastening to the sheathing is done using special nails, and it is advisable to drill holes for them.

Ruberoid. The main advantage of rolled roofing felt is its low cost, sufficient coating strength and effective protection from water. The service life of a roof made of roofing felt correct operation reaches 15 years of age.

This roofing material is mounted on a continuous sheathing.

The first step is to prepare the base for the roof. Then, immediately before laying the first layer, it is necessary to coat bitumen mastic base, roll out and press the roofing felt. The roofing felt strips are installed from bottom to top with an overlap of 20 cm. This method installation does not allow water to flow into the joints between the sheets. Then, in a similar way, only in a perpendicular direction, the second layer is laid. And finally, after coating with bitumen mastic, it is necessary to lay the third layer, also in a direction perpendicular to the previous layer.

Profiled sheeting. This material has gained popularity due to its long service life (up to 50 years) and low weight, which reduces the cost of constructing a rafter system and manufacturing sheathing. The corrugated sheet is made of coated steel polymer coating or a layer of zinc (galvanized steel). Giving a characteristic trapezoidal profile is done by cold rolling. Sheet dimensions and specific profile shape different models are different. The sheets are installed with an overlap of about 20 cm, from bottom to top. The sidewalls, edges and tops are decorated using special profiles.

When creating a roof based on corrugated sheets, it needs to be waterproofed and insulated.

A properly designed and manufactured garage roof will allow you to be sure that your car parked in the garage is not in danger of leaking, and it is reliably protected from the vagaries of the weather.

This is how to properly roof a garage with roofing felt:

One of the important stages of garage construction, the construction of the roof, often raises a lot of questions. What to choose: an attic or flat roof, red corrugated sheeting or cheap slate, make a “warm” floor or insulate the slopes themselves? And below you will learn how to make a garage roof with your own hands, using examples of gable and shed roof options.

First of all, you must find out what kind of garage you actually need: a heated box or a cold box that can only hide the car from snow and rain?

Now decide on the type of roof itself:

  • flat - it involves pouring a concrete floor or installing its factory slabs (usually round-hollow), using a crane to lay them;
  • lean-to - the easiest option for those who plan to make a roof for the garage with their own hands;
  • gable - a more complex and labor-intensive roof option that requires certain construction skills and high flow rate materials.

Alternatively, consider a unit above the second floor garage. Depending on the roof used, it is worth deciding on the option for its insulation:

  • flat is insulated along the top of the slab;
  • single-pitch is usually insulated by laying thermal insulation material between the rafters;
  • a gable roof is insulated either like a single-pitched roof, or by placing the insulation above the garage in a horizontal ceiling.

Select the appropriate roofing material for your roof type.

All these actions should be performed at the design stage, since its weight and the load that the roof will exert on the foundation depend on the chosen structure (this will affect the size of the foundation structure and its type: columnar, strip or base slab along the entire perimeter of the garage).

DIY flat roof for garage

It is recommended that such roofing be carried out with the assistance of specialists. All because ready-made slabs You will not be able to lay the floors without a team of crane operators. Moreover, by pouring concrete floor manually, a large volume will be required ready-mixed concrete(which allows this procedure to be done in one go), reinforcement cages, formwork and assistants.

When pouring a monolithic concrete slab in a garage, it is usually made horizontal, and the slope is created later by laying insulation (for example, expanded clay).

If circular hollow-core floor slabs are installed, then a slope can be created during installation (by making the facade wall higher than the others: height differences should form a slope of at least 2 cm per 1 m of slab length).

Do-it-yourself pitched roof for a garage

The most affordable and simplest option for beginners planning to make a garage roof with their own hands is pitched roof. Moreover, wooden or metal tanks can be used as load-bearing structures.

  • Supporting structures (rafters) are laid along the garage (it is important that façade wall was higher than the others, which makes it possible to make the slope necessary for the roofing material) and rest on a mauerlat (beam with a cross-section of at least 10x10 cm). It is worth laying a waterproofing layer under the Mauerlat (pieces of roofing felt are perfect).
  • Using a construction stapler, a wind and moisture protective membrane is secured to the top of the rafters.
  • Next, a wooden counter batten is attached along the rafters, onto which the sheathing is fixed (with a certain pitch or continuous, depending on the roofing material).
  • The roofing material is laid in accordance with the technology of this process developed by the manufacturer.
  • Roof insulation. It is carried out depending on the chosen option (in the plane of the ceiling or between the rafters). The insulation on the inside should be protected with a layer of vapor barrier.

Do-it-yourself gable roof for a garage

For arrangement gable roof you will need a more complex version of the supporting structure. Moreover, if roofing material a significant slope will be required (there is a delay on the roof large quantities snow or under strong wind rainwater may get under it), then it is better to make not an attic, but an attic (there will be a usable room inside it).

How to repair a soft roof?

To perform the entire range of repair work soft roof construction you will need the following set of tools:

  • roofing felt;
  • broom;
  • tin bucket;
  • bitumen mastic;
  • burner and gas cylinder;
  • construction hair dryer;
  • axe.

Before starting repairs, it is recommended to take into account the nature of the roof. In many cases, garages are built in one row. However, if you decide to do complete renovation, then you need to contact your neighbors and warn them about this. Otherwise, it’s unlikely that anyone will be happy that part of their roof was destroyed.

Attention! Hard roof repairs should only be done in warm, dry weather.

Identifying problem areas

Remove all leaves and other contaminants from the roof surface. After this, carefully inspect the roof again and decide what kind of repair it should be - partial or complete. If the roof is more than 10 years old, then most likely bulges, cracks have formed on it, and the seams have come apart. Having identified problem area, don’t rush to take everything off. It is enough to cut it crosswise and press tightly. If there are cracks, cut them with an ax and then clean them of debris and dust. To do this, use a gas burner and a hairdryer.

Covering the garage roof with roofing felt

One of the easiest ways to repair a roof is to cover it with roofing felt. The main advantage of this material is its low cost. Plus it's beautiful waterproofing material, protecting the garage roof from leaks.

Previously made holes can be covered with roofing felt. For partial repair it should be cut into small pieces. Apply this piece to the hole and press firmly. A layer of resin or mastic is applied on top of it. After this, the bent roofing material can be pressed again and covered with mastic.

Attention! The cut piece of roofing felt must be 20 cm larger than the damaged area. Thus, you will ensure high-quality waterproofing. Then you can simply leave everything as is and lay a new layer of roofing felt over the entire surface of the roof.

How to lay roofing felt on a garage roof

If you plan to cover the roof with a new layer of roofing felt, then you should spread it on the surface and wait a day. To complete the work, you will need resin (to connect the old roofing felt to the new one). It will also protect all joints from possible course. Typically, the resin is prepared in a tin bucket or some other container that is subject to further disposal. To do this, the tar is melted with a burner to the consistency of thick sour cream.

Once the resin is ready, you can fill part of the roof with it, and then lay down the roofing material. Then go over its entire surface. The next sheet should be overlapped towards the slope by 12 cm. For this reason, laying the first sheet should start from the bottom point.

Attention! If bubbles form while laying roofing felt, poke a hole (small) and press firmly on the problem area. If necessary, this place must be filled with resin.

It will take 12 hours for the first layer of roofing felt to dry. Then you can install the second layer. Do not forget to ensure that the joints of the first and second layers do not coincide in any way. This will eliminate the possibility of moisture penetrating into the soft roof.

If there are places adjacent to the wall, then it is important to pay special attention to them. Perhaps it would be relevant to use a rigid sheet. Most likely you will need to lay several layers of roofing material in the corner. Moreover, each layer should dry well.

Attention! If the roof slope angle is less than 15°, then less than four layers of roofing material will be needed. If the slope of the slope is more than 16°, then you need to use at least two layers.

Features of garage roof waterproofing

There is another way to make waterproofing. To do this, it is not at all necessary to use roofing felt. You can use a special weldable material like bikrost. It is ideal for soft roofing.

The technology for its application is as follows:
  • cleaning and priming of the roof;
  • Rolling out the bicrost roll if necessary. You should not immediately roll out the roll along the entire roof;
  • Please note that the bottom layer of bicrost is represented by oxidized bitumen, which can be heated with a burner;
  • during heating, carefully ensure that the material fits as tightly as possible to the roof at the edges and corners;
  • each subsequent sheet of material must be overlapped by up to 70 mm;
  • There is no need to delay the work process. Everything needs to be done efficiently and quickly. This is primarily due to the fact that bitumen sets very quickly. Tearing it off the roof can cause damage.

As you can see, the technology for waterproofing a bicrost roof is almost no different from that used when laying roofing felt. The only advantage is that you don't have to prepare the resin. Believe me, this is a painstaking and unpleasant process. But the result will not be worse.

How to repair a hard roof

If corrugated sheeting, rather than resin, is used to cover the garage, then the nature of its repair will naturally be different. Most likely, it is easier to replace damaged sheets. Although there are cases when a tree has fallen on the roof of the garage, as a result of which it is necessary to resort to major repairs, which also include the installation of sheathing.

If partial repairs are required, then, first of all, you need to dismantle the old sheet and lay a new one. It is important that it does not coincide in wavelength. In addition, it is important to carefully ensure that the correct overlap is made. The sheet is screwed with special self-tapping screws designed for corrugated sheets.

Attention! If the length of the garage is 6 meters, and the sheet of material is 1 meter, then 12 sheets of corrugated sheeting will be needed for the entire roof.

If the garage is covered with metal tiles, then its repair is practically no different. The only thing that needs to be controlled are the locks connecting the tiles.

By following our recommendations, you will be able to make high-quality roof repairs, which will significantly reduce costs than having to create it all over again. And do not forget that often the roof requires partial repair, which will save your money. But the main thing is that you can do all the work yourself.
