Every builder knows how to install wooden windows in a wooden house, but ordinary residents of private houses cannot do this with their own hands. The reason is a lack of knowledge, although ordering such a procedure from experts “will cost a pretty penny.” Read the information below to make your home as comfortable and warm as possible.

Grandparents know very well what a wooden frame is. After all, previously there were such windows on every corner. The process of installing a wooden window requires special skills and abilities from the master in order to get the right result. The quality of installation, compliance with tightness, service life, and overall appearance directly depend on the experience and skill of the technician. And in order to avoid drafts and unnecessary distortions, let's look at the step-by-step instructions for installing wooden windows. When installing a wooden window, you cannot do without skill and certain skills, but then you can make an excellent glazed window.

Features of installation and dismantling of old wooden windows

Before installing wooden windows in a wooden house, you should listen to the recommendations of experienced craftsmen in order to effectively carry out the operation yourself. Especially if you have never encountered this kind of work before. It is best to transfer such a process into the hands of a master who knows all the secrets of the installation first-hand. After all, the lack of necessary skills can lead to the frame being damaged. And their cost is quite high, so spending additional money on repairs is expensive. In addition, repair is not always possible. However, it is often necessary to install products, for example, in.

Woodworking enthusiasts can delve into the installation features in more detail and try their hand at this craft. If you follow the recommendations, you will not only be able to install a wooden window with high quality, but also save a lot.

Advice: if you order a new wooden window, you should leave the installation in the hands of the manufacturer. The fact is that in this way all guarantees for this design will be preserved. And if you install it yourself, then all your mistakes will remain on your conscience.

In any case, before installing new window frames, it is worth removing the old structures. This paragraph does not apply to houses that are under construction. By following the correct sequence of actions, you will make your task much easier:

  1. Before work you need to prepare the room. If possible, it is better to move small interior details, clothes and furniture to another room. This way, your things will be safe and sound.
  2. The furniture that remains in the room and the flooring should be protected. To do this, just cover them with film.
  3. Floor coverings also need to be removed. This includes a rug, carpet, runner, etc.

After such preparations, you can begin to dismantle the old window itself. To do this, carefully, but applying force, you need to disassemble the wooden frame. In this case, the slopes are knocked down along with the plaster. This operation will help you determine the presence of a lintel. Without this element, the structure is dangerous. In older buildings, such “hackwork” is common. If you also fall into this number of “lucky” ones, then further actions are impossible without resolving this issue with professional builders, and there is no need to go there yourself. But experience will help you further develop in the direction, and then completely.

Then beat off the slopes in all places. Carefully inspect whether there are embedded beams in each wall on which the window frame is fixed. It is worth immediately determining their condition.

Embedded beams in the wall

Tip: in order to find out whether these beams need to be replaced or not, use a regular awl. It's worth sticking it into the block. If it fits tightly and is difficult to pull out, then everything is in order. Their presence is not necessary to install a new window.

The importance of correct measurements

Replacing any window requires correct measurement of parameters. This will determine how perfectly the window fits into the window opening. If you have a wooden house, then cleaning should occur to the level of the casing. Now you can start taking measurements. It is important to take measurements clearly and in the right places. Even a small error can ruin everything.

Even if you have saved previous measurements, it is not a fact that they will fit now. After all, over time, any building is influenced by external factors. It is important to create a wooden window slightly smaller than the opening itself. This way you can correctly align the frame in relation to the horizon using correction. To do this, subtract 15–25 mm from the height, and as much as 4–6 cm from the width.

All parameters are taken from ideal lines (horizontal and vertical). To create them, use a building level. Modern devices, such as a laser tape measure, will greatly simplify all measurements. After all, it will give a real indicator for each parameter. It is also important to know how if they are located on the upper floors.

Step-by-step installation of a wooden window

Before installing a wooden frame, you need to prepare the necessary tools. To work you will need:

  • drill and hammer drill;
  • hammer pliers;
  • screwdrivers;
  • perhaps a saw and a plane with an axe.

It would not be superfluous to purchase silicone sealant, polyurethane foam, roofing felt (polyurethane). These materials are useful for sealing the opening.

If a wooden window is installed in a wooden house, then the technology involves the use of support blocks.

Initially, installing wooden windows in a wooden house with your own hands begins with protecting the window from moisture that a wooden wall can provide. After all, such moisture provokes the occurrence of mold and various fungal growths. And all this very quickly spoils the wood. Therefore, it is necessary to glue parts of the roofing material into the opening. It adheres well to silicone. Here's what you should do:

  1. Blocks (length 12 - 15 cm) made of wood. One end should already be under the frame. The widest point should correspond to the distance between the frame and the wall. You need at least 4 pieces.
  2. 2 pieces are installed at the bottom of the opening. There should be about 80 cm between them (depending on the size of the wooden window).
  3. Remove the sashes from your frame and place it in the opening itself on supports. Maintain the required slope - at least 10 cm.

  1. The remaining pads are set according to this scheme, as in the photo. They should not fit tightly, so if necessary, tighten them up a little with a plane. Always adhere to the vertical (plumb check) and horizontal (level check) so that there are no even small distortions.
  2. When everything is aligned perfectly, you can pull out the block one at a time, fill the area with sealant and insert it back.
  3. The hardest part is behind us. Now it's up to the polyurethane foam. With its help, all cracks around the perimeter are sealed. You need to work with it carefully, and after drying, simply cut off the excess parts with a knife.

You can learn more about window installation from the video. Now you know perfectly well how to install wooden windows in a wooden house, and you can do it yourself, and not spend extra money on the work of builders. The main thing is attention and patience.

Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is currently very popular - it is affordable, holds heat well and does not lose its geometric parameters. Against the backdrop of rising energy prices, such materials are almost a panacea, so installing a plastic window in a wooden house with your own hands is of interest to many people. In the article, in addition to installation instructions, you will find photo and video materials that will help you cope with the task.

Selecting plastic windows

In order to choose a good plastic window that is suitable specifically for your case, you will have to pay attention to several parameters. Do not neglect these indicators so that during operation you do not have any complaints about the manufacturer or even force majeure circumstances.

Features of double-glazed windows

Single-chamber (left) and three-chamber (right) double-glazed windows

The production of double-glazed windows involves not only different manufacturing technologies, but also different glass - this directly affects their performance characteristics. Below you will see what they are:

  1. Regular option with float glass. This glass has high light transparency and is free from any disadvantages.
  2. Multifunctional double-glazed windows. There is protection against ultraviolet radiation (exposure to sunlight) and has a low heat transfer capacity. These features directly affect the maintenance of the microclimate in the room - they keep out the cold in winter and heat in summer.
  3. Self-cleaning designs. Such double-glazed windows help to significantly save time on cleaning, since the windows do not have to be washed from the outside. The special composition with which the glass is coated, when exposed to ultraviolet radiation (sun rays), destroys the dirt that will be washed away by the first rain. There are no drips or stains left.
  4. Soundproofing options. In this case, thicker glasses and a scientific approach to the distance between them are used. Thanks to the high-quality profile, seal and glazing bead, vibration as such is completely eliminated. Such windows do not absorb, but reflect airborne noise, which affects densely populated and industrial areas, as well as houses located near railway stations and airfields.
  5. Reflective double-glazed windows. They are also called specular because they are shiny and reflective with a reflectance of about 4%. Such options are ideal for hot climatic conditions - they do not allow heat to pass through, they do not heat up themselves, but at the same time they allow photons (light) to pass through unhindered.
  6. Colored double glazed windows. Such glass softens bright light and does not transmit heat well, although transparency does not suffer from this. Properties (light and heat retention) change with shades.
  7. Tinted double glazed windows. They have the same characteristics as colored ones, but they do not contain any coloring pigments. The shade changes due to the gluing of a special film.
  8. Energy saving options with k-glass. This is ordinary float glass, onto which, during its manufacturing process (in a hot state), a k-coating (thin metal film) is applied using the pyrolysis method. This significantly reduces thermal conductivity and increases mechanical strength (glass is placed on the outside).
  9. Energy saving options with i-glass. It has the reduced thermal conductivity inherent in k-glass. But i-coating is a thin layer of silver and the glass can easily be deformed, so it is installed inside a double-glazed window.
  10. Designs made from smart glass. These are like “living” windows that change their parameters (transparency and thermal conductivity) when they change from the outside. This category includes energy-saving and self-cleaning windows.
  11. Triplex glass. It is a multilayer sheet with a transparent polymer in the interlayer. This factor does not reduce translucency, but increases fire resistance and mechanical strength (this does not affect thermal conductivity and sound insulation). If such glass is broken, it will not shatter into small fragments, but will be held on to the polymer.

Note. Also, double-glazed windows are distinguished by the number of chambers. For regions with a temperate climate, one- and two-chamber packages are popular, in cold zones - three-chamber ones.

Metal-plastic profile

Five-chamber profile made of metal-plastic

The functionality of PVC profiles for windows can be determined by six parameters, including:

  • Number of cameras. According to the building standard, 3, 4 and 5 chamber PVC profiles are produced. Moreover, the thickness of the first two options is 60 mm, and the third – 70 mm.
  • The width of the outer wall can be of three classes:
  1. A – 3 mm ±0.2 mm;
  2. B – 2.7 mm ±0.2 mm;
  3. C – 2.5 mm ±0.2 mm.
  • Reinforcing or guide profile. It determines the rigidity of the frame and its service life. When installing a plastic window in a wooden house, pay attention to its cross-section - it must be a galvanized square with a wall of at least 1.2 mm. L-shaped perforated or ferrous metal, especially one of smaller thickness, indicates low quality.
  • Rubber seals. High-quality seals are made of rubber and have a warranty from the manufacturer for at least 10 years. But if you lubricate the inserts with special silicone at least once a year, the service life will double.
  • A high-quality PVC profile does not fade in the sun, does not turn yellow and does not emit an odor, but this depends on its composition:
  1. TiO2 – titanium dioxide. An effective white dye, which is practically absent in budget profiles.
  2. Chalk - its permissible level in cheap profiles is limited to 6%, but unscrupulous manufacturers exceed this parameter by 2-3 times. This causes the plastic to burn out, turn yellow, and there is no perfectly smooth surface.
  • The manufacturer largely determines quality. So, Chinese windows are much cheaper, but they will not last long. In the European Union countries and in Russia, a law has been introduced on laser marker marks, which are applied 30-50 cm from the end side. The date of manufacture and country of origin are displayed there. If such marking is present, then there is no doubt about the quality of PVC, reinforcement and seals - they will comply with GOST and SNiP.

PVC window installation process

Below you will find step-by-step instructions for installing plastic windows in a wooden house. This is not difficult, but it will require the presence of certain carpentry tools - I will not write them out separately and you will learn about them as you read.

Removing old windows

Removing old windows

I offer special instructions for dismantling old windows from the opening so as not to damage those elements that will remain in use. But this only applies to old houses, where there are already window openings with jambs and they meet your needs - in a new building this point is not relevant.

First of all, you should remove all the glass - to do this, remove the glazing bead and all the nails that did not come out when eliminating this profile. Sometimes the studs are invisible, so to make sure they are present or absent, run a knife or screwdriver at the place where the beads are installed, lightly pressing against the glass. If there is any fastening material left there, then the blade will definitely trip over it, and then, as they say, it’s a matter of technique.

In some cases, in order to seal the windows as much as possible and get rid of drafts, the glass is glued to the frame with silicone or silicone sealant. In such situations, all attempts to pick up the glass with a knife in order to tear it off the frame are doomed to failure. There is only one way out - to break the glass, but it can fly apart and hurt you. To avoid this, glue wet newspaper onto the glass and break it - all the fragments will fall nearby and will not fly apart.

The frame is supported by nails, which are also very difficult to pull out - it is much easier to cut vertical frame profiles with a hacksaw, as shown in the top photo. After this, use a nail puller to pick up part of the cut vertical and tear it off. Perform a similar operation on the opposite side, and then tear off the cross sections with a nail puller. The opening is ready and you can insert a plastic window.

Window casing in a wooden house

This is how a groove is made for the casing tenon in the embedded block

First of all, you should cut out the window openings and there are two options. If the plastic windows are already ready, then, of course, you will have to focus on their sizes, but this is the exception rather than the rule. Usually, the window (door) openings are cut out first and only after that the window dimensions are taken or a representative of the company where the windows will be made is invited (this is a free service).

Casing into the embedded block (left) and into the deck (right)

First, let's look at the features of installing a casing (plug). Casing into a deck clearly involves cutting a tenon along the verticals of the opening, and making a groove in the box for this tenon, as shown in the image at the top right. But we will focus on the pigtail with the embedded bar - it is more popular.

There are more options with an embedded block. A groove is cut in the opening according to the size of the block (usually 50x50 mm) and the block is driven there without nailing it, and a distance of 3 cm is left at the top for the house to shrink. But sometimes they make a so-called monolith spike, this is when the spike is one piece with the vertical of the casing. In both cases, the logs or beams, when the wall shrinks, will simply slide along the tenon without deforming the window frame.

A jute or felt tape is nailed to both sides of the inserted block with a stapler - this is necessary for sealing and. Now you can screw a rough box to the block, which is most often assembled from a 50x100 mm pine board. In this case, it is best to use wood screws 75 mm long - they are guaranteed not to pass through the block and will not reach the edge of the opening. If this happens, a log or beam may hang on the screw, which will lead to the formation of a gap between the logs.

Now the upper and lower crossbars are inserted, but if at the bottom it is laid between vertical boards, then at the top it is placed on them. The gap left should be 3 cm, which means that the distance from the end of the vertical to the top of the opening is 8 cm, that is, the jumper, having a 5-centimeter thickness, will leave 3 cm of free space after installation. It is best to fasten the boards of the rough box together with metal corners. Now we are talking about installing a plastic window in a wooden house with your own hands, so below you can watch a video about how a window frame is made.

Important! The use of polyurethane foam in this case is unacceptable! The foam will glue the box with the opening, which will prevent the logs from sliding freely along the block during shrinkage.

Installation of PVC window sill

PVC window sill

After installing the rough frame (casing), you can begin installing the window sill - this is the first step for assembling the window within the opening. The fact is that the window sill is not adjacent to the transverse profile from the side, but the frame is placed on top - there is a special recess there. But for strength, you should make a 5-8 mm cut on the sides of the box and insert the window sill there - this way it will hold much better. To level the horizontal level, plastic plates are used as stands (mention them when ordering the window if you are installing it yourself).

Self-tapping screws with press washer

The window sill element must be attached to the bottom of the window opening with self-tapping screws, stepping back 20-25 mm from the edge of the plastic panel, and subsequently the heads will be covered with a frame profile. To prevent the screw head from pushing through the plastic, you need a version with a press washer without a rubber gasket, as in the top photo.

Installation of a plastic window in a wooden house

PVC frames are always covered with a protective film, but according to the installation technology, it is removed only when the window is finally inserted - this protects the plastic from scratches and contamination. To prevent the shutters from opening (this interferes with installation), screw the window handles and place them in the “closed” position (vertically down).

On vertical and horizontal window profiles, holes are drilled on the installation line of the double-glazed window with a diameter 1 mm larger than the diameter of the fastening screw. Most often, the screw is 5 mm, and the hole is made 6 mm. The caps must be recessed into the plastic, so a 10 mm drill is used to make a countersunk to the depth of the metal profile. You need three holes on the sides, and two at the top and bottom, with a distance of 50-60 mm from the corner.

At the bottom, the frame is placed directly on the window sill, but at the top and on the sides there should be a gap of about 10 mm or a little less. Therefore, to screw the frame evenly, use wooden spacers (they are easy to make yourself). When everything is screwed in, check the vertical and horizontal levels, as well as the function of opening and closing the doors, so that there is no distortion.

If the sash closes normally (there is no friction anywhere and there is a tight connection), then close the window and insert double-glazed windows. It is unlikely that it will be possible to press the glazing bead with your hands, therefore, in order for this profile to fit tightly into the seating groove, it is finished off with a rubber hammer. Now all that remains is to blow out the gap between the frame and the rough frame with mounting foam, and the sash can be opened the next day (a precaution against warping the profile). All that remains is to make slopes inside and outside, as well as install platbands, but this is after the final shrinkage of the house.

Conclusion

In fact, installing a plastic window in a wooden house, except for the construction and installation of the casing, is done in the same way as in a brick, block or monolithic building. But attentiveness is needed in any case, so try to remember all your actions and, if necessary, read the article again. You can also print out the installation process on a printer and keep it in your pocket while you work for use as needed.

As practice shows, plastic windows (PVC or Euro-windows with double-glazed windows) have higher energy saving rates than ordinary wooden ones. For this, as well as a number of other reasons, PVC windows are increasingly preferred when constructing or reconstructing a wooden house.

Of course, this is a controversial preference, however, we will not figure out which windows are better - wooden or plastic.

In this article we will look at how to independently install plastic windows in a wooden house (as well as a log house made of logs or timber). Let's do this using the example of the most common installation method.

The window installation process consists of several stages:

  1. Dismantling old windows in a wooden house
  2. Preparing openings for installing new windows

The disassembly process is most often not particularly difficult. To work, you will need a saw (chainsaw, electric saw), an axe, a nail puller or a crowbar.

If the windows are old and the window frames are rotten and worthless, then you can mercilessly destroy everything and everyone, without caring about the safety of the latter.

If the window frames are in good condition, then carefully remove them after removing the glass. These frames can be used to construct a greenhouse, gazebo or other construction needs.

When dismantling old windows, be sure to follow safety precautions when working with cutting and chopping tools; use safety glasses when working with saws. Before sawing the structure, make sure there are no nails or any metal pins - this will save the tool (saw band) and protect you from possible injuries, since when the saw jams, it is quite difficult to hold it in your hands.

Preparing openings for installing new windows

After removing the frame, you need to make sure that the window opening is suitable for installing a new window. Namely, check the condition of the wood of the window frame, the absence of signs of rot, wormholes, cracks, chips and other damage. It is recommended to treat it with protective compounds. If the window frame is not suitable for further use, then it must be replaced with a new one. For this you will need a good, dried planed board. The corners can be fastened with locks (for example, mortise-tenon), or you can simply twist them using self-tapping screws of sufficient length. It is imperative to treat the structure with protective compounds.

When replacing a window frame, you can carry out an inspection and, if necessary, replace steam-waterproofing, insulating materials, and check the condition of the material (wood) in the window opening of the wall.

It may be necessary to replace some sections of the opening. For example, in log houses, the areas of logs located under the window opening are most often affected. In this case, the damaged areas are cut out and replaced with pieces of logs of suitable size. The replaced areas are secured depending on the possibilities - with staples, long s’mores, wooden locks (mortise-tenon).

Be sure to treat the replaced area with protective compounds.

Installation of windows in a window frame (for logged wooden houses, installation of a window frame is carried out using a frame or casing) is the most correct way to install windows. Thus, the rigidity of the opening is maintained and a strong base frame is created. But at the same time, the window itself will be able to self-regulate with seasonal fluctuations in the house (shrinkage, movement, etc.).

During installation, the window frame is leveled.

Installation of plastic windows in a wooden house

After preparation, we proceed to the window installation process itself.

First of all, we separate the window frame from the sashes; if the window is solid, we remove the double-glazed window. We do not remove the protective film from the windows - it will protect the profile from possible damage and scratches.

Window sill installation

If you need to install a window sill, we install it first. When installing, we adjust the plane using a level and backing plates (pieces of wood, plywood, etc.).

If the window sill is also made of PVC, then you need to place a washer under the head of the screw (so that when screwing it in, the screw does not fall into the cavity of the window sill). We screw the screws into the places located under the future frame (so that it is beautiful and the caps are not visible). But most often, the lower wide board of the window frame serves as a window sill, and therefore the installation of an additional window sill is not required.

Frame fitting

We place the frame on blocks about 1 cm thick and check the level for correct installation. Be sure to leave a gap of at least 1 cm on the sides and install small blocks between the frame and the window frame. They will prevent the frame from moving horizontally, prevent possible deformation of the frame during installation, and allow the window frame to be securely fastened to the window frame.

We check the flatness of the surface of the wall (window frame) and frame, not allowing the frame to protrude beyond the boundaries of the window frame.

Window frame installation

We fasten the frame using long screws to the window frame, being careful not to overtighten the screw. After installing the frame, we hang the sashes and install double-glazed windows (in blind windows).

When installing a double-glazed window into a profile, it is necessary that there is a gap of about 5-7 mm between the double-glazed window and the profile. This will prevent the glass from warping and cracking in case of possible deformations of the profile (frame) during operation (seasonal fluctuations of the building, possible distortions during shrinkage and during operation).

Vertical adjustment is made using adjustment plates.

Double-glazed window installation

Next, using a plastic bead, the double-glazed window is fixed in the PVC profile. The tenon of the bead should fit into the groove on the frame until it clicks. The connection should be made by lightly tapping the glazing bead with a wooden or rubber mallet or hammer.

Window foaming

Next, we foam the space between the window frame and the frame. We wait until the foam hardens. During this period of time, it is not recommended to open or ventilate the window to prevent frame deformation from foam expansion.

After the foam has hardened, we cut off the excess and can proceed to finishing with platbands.

Installation of plastic windows in a wooden houseVideo

The last stage is removing the protective film, the window is ready for use.

Plastic double-glazed windows have gained popularity due to their performance qualities. But can they be used in the construction and repair of wooden buildings? Of course, it is possible and necessary.

Installing plastic windows in a wooden house has a lot of differences and features. The process includes a number of preparatory manipulations, primarily related to the fact that the structure tends to sag over time.

We install a PVC window in a private house

The technology features for installing PVC windows in a wooden house of new or old construction are not very different. In any case, experts recommend technology using casing - time-tested, this technology allows you to avoid deformation, regardless of the material from which it is made.

Installing a plastic window in a wooden house or cottage with your own hands will require the performer to have some knowledge and skills. Of course, if there are none, then it is more advisable to turn to specialists. The difficulty of self-installation of PVC systems in a wooden house lies in the fact that the frame is attached using a tongue-and-groove mechanism. This design makes it possible to create operating conditions in which the deformation and subsidence of wood does not directly affect the glass unit.

According to statistics, a wooden house can shrink up to 30 cm. Depending on the material, due to the drying of the wood within 1 year after the construction of the structure, the amount of structure shrinkage per meter of height is:

  • log: 40-60 mm;
  • timber: 30-40 mm;
  • laminated timber 10-30 mm.

These factors should not be neglected, since subsidence of the building already in the first year threatens to crush the window with the crowns of the wall structure.

Shrinkage of the walls can occur even after 5 years of operation of the house under the influence of seasonal changes in the composition and humidity of the air. At the same time, installation of windows in old houses also implies the presence of casing.

So, let's consider the algorithm for installing PVC systems in wooden houses.

Stage No. 1. Preparatory work

Before starting the actual installation, it is necessary to carry out a number of preparatory measures:

  • dismantling the old window (if replacement is taking place);
  • cleaning the opening from dirt and construction debris;
  • make the necessary measurements and calculations;
  • drawing up a drawing and recording the opening measurement parameters;
  • aligning the contours of the sides of the window opening if the hole has an irregular shape;
  • leveling is carried out using putty or sealant;
  • decide on the design and functionality (number of doors, their size, which of them will open);
  • decide on the manufacturer and color of the product.

Only after completing all of the above manipulations do we order a window from the manufacturer, taking into account individual wishes.

Stage No. 2. Installation

Once the windows have been delivered and the necessary preliminary work has been carried out, you can proceed directly to installation. Tools:

  • drill;
  • construction level;
  • chisel;
  • screwdriver;
  • roulette;
  • mallet;
  • pliers;
  • anchor plates and bolts;
  • window adjustment key;
  • polyurethane foam;
  • spacer wedges;
  • spray bottle with water.

Casing: purpose, types and design

The casing is a box-shaped structure, which is made of three or four boards and installed around the perimeter inside the opening.

The system allows you to install a plastic window yourself, so that the window is fixed independently of the main structure of the wall and has a floating character. The window system is secured using grooves on the side, which are placed on tenons protruding from the end of the logs and beams.

To fix and seal the casing, only tow, flax batting or fiber insulation are used. Never use polyurethane foam.

Thus, shrinkage of the walls of a wooden building does not in any way affect the window, much less damage it. Depending on the fastenings, casings can be classified into the following types:

  • into a thorn This design is characterized by the presence of a tenon, which is mounted on the side parts of the casing, and a groove, which is located in the logs of the opening;
  • in the embedded timber. The basis of the fastening is considered to be a block, which is placed in a groove at the ends of the opening and passes through the casing posts;
  • into the deck. The tenon is located at the ends of the window opening logs, but the groove is in the casing posts.

The box is a floating mechanism, which prevents deformation of the plastic window during operation, regardless of the type of installation of the casing.

Calculations should be made with high accuracy, since even a minor error can lead to deformation of the window frame or leakage of the structure. In addition, correct installation is the key to the quality of the plastic window itself.

How to make a pigtail (casing)

The design can be of two types: complex and simple. A simple window frame is the system described above, with bars and grooves. The complex design is performed somewhat differently: a ridge is cut out in the window opening, onto which a carriage with grooves is placed. This option is more reliable. When the walls shrink, the ridge can slide and does not allow vertical deviations, eliminating pressure on the window frame.

The casing is usually made of timber. Using a wood chisel, a 0.5 cm groove is knocked out in the center of the beam, and a tenon (0.5x0.5x.25 cm) is cut out from one end. A ridge with 0.5x0.5 cm spikes is cut out from the end of the opening logs. You can use a saw or chisel for this.

After the ridge is ready, we proceed to install the risers and form the structure of the opening between them. The beams are installed level, taking into account the gaps for wall shrinkage (1 cm on the sides and 0.5 cm on top). The frame made of beams is strengthened with the help of grooves with the main fabric of the walls and dowels between them. The gaps left are sealed with tow or other fiber. That's all, now you can start installing the plastic frame directly. You can watch the process in more detail in this video:

Stage No. 3. Installation in the prepared opening

After carrying out the necessary preparatory work and installing the frame, you can begin installing the window.

To begin with, we check the dimensions and location of parallels, the gaps between the casing structure and the frame. The margin for foaming should be: 4-5 cm at the top, 2-3 cm in width and height, 3-4 cm in the window sill area. Having made sure that the stock corresponds to these indicators, we proceed directly to installing the plastic frame.

The window is secured using special fasteners, which are sold at any hardware store. They are metal plates with holes.

Installation of a plastic window should be done level. If you neglect this factor, then you risk getting a structure with a slope, which significantly reduces the operational and aesthetic objectives of the window.

After the window is secured in the opening, it is necessary to fill the gap with foam. To avoid displacement of the structure during foaming, blocks are placed that will maintain the position of the frame without deviation. After drying, do not forget to remove it.

Fastening the window to the casing is done with care. In this case, it is necessary to choose the correct location for tightening the screws. Under no circumstances should a window be secured in the ridge area!

That's all, we finish the process by completely foaming the opening. We put the sashes on and let the foam dry.

We have presented the correct way to install a plastic window in a wooden house. This process can be difficult, so if you are unsure of your abilities, it is better to turn to professionals.

However, installing a plastic window yourself is a significant cost savings. We invite you to watch a video tutorial on how to install a window yourself:

Technology for installing plastic windows in a wooden house

Korovin Sergey Dmitrievich

Master of Architecture, graduated from Samara State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering. 11 years of experience in design and construction.

Due to their performance characteristics, double-glazed windows made of PVC material have gained particular popularity among the population. They are installed in buildings and structures made of concrete, brick, and wood. Installing plastic windows in a wooden house requires following certain rules.

Important installation details

When starting the installation, you need to prepare the equipment you will need: a building level and a plumb line, and also know how to insert a plastic window. It is necessary to install a PVC window strictly observing the placement in a level plane. This will ensure the correct operation of all elements; the doors will not open or close spontaneously.

The technology for installing a PVC window involves its correct placement in a level plane

When purchasing plastic structures, you need to buy additional special fasteners for installation. The frame is fixed in the frame of a wooden structure using self-tapping screws and special fasteners. By following the technological process and correctly installing plastic windows in a wooden house, you are guaranteed to receive window units that will last for a long time.

The window frame is secured using anchor plates

If you dismantle the sashes, the structure will become much lighter and it will be easier to move it, however, installing metal-plastic windows in a wooden house alone is still not recommended. To remove the doors, you need to remove the pins from the hinges.

How to install PVC double-glazed windows

Do-it-yourself installation of plastic windows in a wooden house is carried out in stages:

  • preparatory activities before installation;
  • installation of PVC windows;
  • control and verification of location in space;
  • blowing with foam.

To understand how to install plastic windows both in a wooden house and in a timber or log house, let’s look at each stage in more detail.

Carrying out preparatory work

First of all, you need to take exact dimensions by measuring the opening and order the window structure from a trusted manufacturer. To do this, most often they invite a representative of a company that produces plastic frames. You can take measurements yourself. After this, they determine the color of the structure and the completeness of the fittings necessary for the functioning of the window.

When the manufacturer delivers the product to the site, the following steps must be completed:

  • if a decision is made to replace the installed windows in the old opening, first of all, it is necessary to dismantle the structure;
  • after which they clean dust, dirt and remove debris that got into the opening from dismantling;
  • It is worth aligning the opening if its geometry is broken.

Having completed the preparation, they insert a plastic window into a wooden house with their own hands.

Fastening the window structure into the prepared opening

We install the window sill first; it will be the base for the double-glazed windows, so it needs to be placed strictly level (horizontally). For fastening strength, notches are made on the sides of the box approximately 8 mm deep. Adjustment is carried out using plastic plates or boards. Fastening occurs with self-tapping screws to the bottom of the box. When screwing in, you should place washers under the screw head; this will prevent damage to the surface.

The next step is to properly install the handle. The film that protects the structures should not be removed; it protects them from damage when the windows are installed. When attaching, the handle must be placed horizontally. When all the fittings have been assembled, the installation of metal-plastic windows begins.

First you need to level the PVC frame. A frame is placed on two-centimeter bars and leveled horizontally, using a water level. After this, they move on to vertical alignment.

Having obtained ideal parameters at the water level, they fix the frame with self-tapping screws to the frame, using mounting fasteners that were specially purchased in the store. It is important not to get the self-tapping screw into the ridge of the log where the socket is installed.

After attaching the window element, we get 2-centimeter gaps around it for the mounting foam.

Before using polyurethane foam, you need to hang the shutters so that after foaming the frame profile does not bend and damage the window. It is important to remember that foam can only be used when the sash is closed..

Control and foaming of the structure

After hanging the sashes, you need to check how the double-glazed window opens and closes. If a window that is half open does not close or move further, then the frame is considered to be installed correctly and the alignment is correct. After closing the sash, foam it with installation foam and leave it for complete fixation for a day.

Why is casing made for plastic windows in a timber house?

To get high-quality PVC windows in a wooden house, you need to strictly follow the installation specifications, that is, install them to a special frame (base). The need for such a design is due to the characteristics of wooden buildings. Unlike a building made of stone (concrete or brick), a wooden panel house is unstable over a long period.

The casing prevents frame deformation when the house shrinks

The building will be completed within the first five years after its construction. In this case, the walls dry out up to 6 cm. This important nuance must be taken into account when installing a plastic window in a frame house. It is clear that you cannot simply insert a plastic window into a wooden house; you need to create a structure for the opening, which is called a casing, or they also say a window frame. Its direct purpose is to prevent the frame from being affected by wall shrinkage, so the socket:

  • strengthens the opening;
  • bears the load;
  • prevents the effects of shrinkage.

The pigtail looks like a box made from thick boards. The structure is attached to the side rack on a groove, no fasteners are used. There is a gap left above the jamb to compensate for shrinkage for a wooden house. There are several options for installing it:

  • A groove is cut in the log into which the block is placed. Self-tapping screws are screwed into the last element of the embedded beam;
  • a groove is cut out in the racks on the sides of the structure, a tenon is cut out from the end of the log in the opening;
  • A groove is made at the end of the logs, and a tenon is placed on the side posts of the box.

Casing options

To get a high-quality design, you need to follow the technology for installing plastic windows in a wooden house. To begin with, cover the ridges of the logs with insulation and secure it with staples or small nails. This stage is necessary to insulate the house and eliminate creaks. Then the lower crossbar of the casing is mounted, and carriages (side posts of the frame) are stuffed onto the ridges, and the upper jumper is placed in the upper groove of the posts. After collecting the box, carefully connect it with self-tapping screws, it is important that they do not get into the logs.

The gaps that are visible in the opening after installing the casing must be filled with tow or insulation. Then the standard installation of plastic windows in a frame house or log house takes place.

The cracks are sealed with insulation or tow.

The compensation gap is filled with flat boards pre-wrapped with tow. As the walls shrink, they are gradually knocked out. To do this, remove the top casing and, having knocked out the board, put it back.

The final stage when glazing a wooden structure

The final finishing after installing PVC windows in a log house is done in the same way as wooden ones, that is, after installing the frame structure and insulation, wooden platbands are installed. When ordering PVC windows in a wooden structure, you should take a closer look at the option with a wood texture, this will allow them to look harmonious against the background of the felled structure.

Many manufacturers of PVC structures offer not only the classic white color option for frames. You can order any shade that the customer desires. Colored plastic frames will cost a little more, but will be a more suitable option for a home made of natural materials.

When ordering, it is important to take the correct measurements of the opening and not make a mistake in the width of the window sill. Independently installing a PVC window in a wooden house if you know all the nuances is not such a difficult process. You can do it yourself, without resorting to the help of expensive installers.

How to fix a window: review of fastening hardware and photo report on the installation completed

An example of fastening to an opening directly through a plastic profile

Hello. In this article I will talk about how to fix plastic windows in a residential building with your own hands using available tools. I hope that this topic will be of interest to you, since installation skills can save money.

Despite the fact that for many manufacturers the price of windows includes the cost of installation, there are many companies where they will sell you double-glazed windows cheaper due to self-installation. The money savings are obvious!

Basic information about window installation

Before attaching windows, familiarize yourself with the universal layout of fastening hardware

The installation of glazing in the opening differs depending on the type of profile used and depending on the type of walls. For example, installation in a stone, concrete or brick wall is carried out directly without any structures compensating for mechanical loads on the window.

At the same time, installation in a wooden house is carried out with the obligatory installation of a casing, which compensates for the loads due to shrinkage processes.

There are two main requirements for the installation of plastic double-glazed windows:

  • Strength and reliability of the installed glazing;
  • Correct location in level relative to the vertical and horizontal planes;
  • Properly sealed gaps around the perimeter of the opening to ensure optimal energy efficiency of the glazing.

Fastening elements for installing double-glazed windows in PVC profiles

Commonly used fasteners for plastic windows: a - frame dowel with a metal seal; b - frame dowel with plastic seal; c – universal plastic dowel; g – screw (self-tapping screw); d - anchor plate

Before moving on to the description of the installation, I suggest you find out what fasteners for PVC windows can be purchased at hardware stores. There are many fastenings and such a variety is not accidental, since each type is intended for one or another type of wall.

Window fasteners according to the type of walls are divided into the following categories:

  • for concrete walls;
  • for installation of brick walls;
  • for installation in aerated concrete walls;
  • for fastening to wood.

By the way, using the listed fasteners, a protective grill can be installed.

Fasteners for installation in concrete openings

Plastic double-glazed windows are installed in concrete openings using anchors or, as they are also called, frame dowels.

To securely fix a heavy window in a concrete opening, it is customary to use anchors with a diameter of 8 or 10 mm and a length of 72 to 202 mm. The length and diameter of the hardware are selected taking into account the density of the wall - the more porous the concrete, the longer and thicker the anchor.

No matter how long or thick the anchors are, the strength of the finished result will depend on how carefully the hole is drilled. If the walls of the hole are broken as a result of unprofessional drilling, even the most reliable fastening hardware will not provide the necessary installation strength.

The photo shows how to attach a plastic window frame to an anchor to a concrete wall.

Installation using anchors is carried out in two ways:

  1. A hole is drilled in the profile and the anchor enters the concrete directly through the profile;
  2. An anchor plate is attached to the profile and through the plate the window structure is fastened to the opening.

The first method is relevant if the technological gap between the profile and the gap is small. If the distance between the profile and the opening is more than 1 cm, you can use an anchor plate, since the fasteners can be covered during finishing if plastic slopes are used.

Anchor plates are metal strips of simple or complex configuration. Simple plates are ordinary strips with perforations. Along with such devices, there are “crabs” - plates that cut into the profile, thereby simplifying the finishing of slopes.

Fasteners for installation in brick walls

Screw the screw into the middle of the brick

Fastening plastic windows in a brick opening is done in much the same way as in concrete. But there is one problem: if for installation in concrete, holes for anchors in the profile can be drilled in advance, then in the case of brick walls, the holes are drilled locally, since you need to get into the center of the brick, and not into the masonry seam.

For installation in brick, the same frame dowel is used as for concrete walls, but with a length of at least 10 cm. A length of 10 cm is the minimum penetration into the brick at which you can be sure that the fastening will not become loose or weaken when operation.

If you are sure that the brick is not hollow, and today this is used extremely rarely, you can use dowels 6-8 cm long.

Fasteners for installation in wooden openings

The figure shows how plastic windows are fastened in a wooden house: a) through an anchor plate, b) directly with a self-tapping screw

The best option for installing windows in a wooden opening without casing is self-tapping screws in combination with anchor plates. This type of fastening is equally good for log, timber and frame buildings.

If a casing box is installed in the opening, installation can be done with screws directly through the profile. To install glazing in a wooden opening, I recommend using self-tapping screws at least 10 cm long with a diameter of 8 mm. We screw in the screws in increments of 30 cm.

Fasteners for installation in aerated concrete openings

Aerated concrete blocks are characterized by low density, and therefore for installation we select special dowels and install them with a small pitch between the screws.

The installation of glazing in aerated concrete walls requires detailed consideration, since an increasing number of houses are being built using such blocks. That is why, to familiarize yourself with the installation technology, I offer a short photo report of the installation work done.

Installation of a plastic window in walls made of aerated concrete blocks

Before fixing the window block to a wall made of aerated concrete blocks, we will prepare the necessary materials

To perform installation work you will need:

  • Perforated anchor plates (160×40 mm and 2 mm thick);
  • Plastic dowels (50×10 mm) for fastening into aerated concrete;
  • Universal metal self-tapping screws (60×6 mm);
  • Electric drill and drills in accordance with the diameter of the dowel;
  • Screwdriver with a set of bits;
  • Water level;
  • Tape measure and pencil.

The installation instructions are as follows:

Drilling standard holes

  • If the perforation in the anchor plates does not correspond to the diameter of the dowels, we drill out the holes; if the diameter initially matches, we skip this stage and move on to the next one;

This method of fixing the anchor plate is relevant if the frame has a metal frame

  • Along the perimeter of the profile, we screw the anchor plates onto self-tapping screws so that the holes drilled for the dowels are located on the outside;

In order for the frame to be securely fastened in the opening, we mount the anchor plates on 2 self-tapping screws, which will prevent them from turning. In addition, the installation step should not exceed 30-40 cm.

  • We install the frame in the opening on plastic inserts and position it level in the horizontal and vertical plane;

Aerated concrete is drilled with a conventional drill at low drill speeds

  • After the structure is aligned in the opening, we drill holes in the aerated concrete blocks in accordance with the perforations in the anchor plates;

To drill aerated concrete blocks, it is not necessary to use a drill with pobedit surfacing. Since aerated concrete is soft, it is quite possible to use the drill that was previously used to drill out the anchor plates. By the way, when drilling, we try not to jerk the drill from side to side, since breaking a hole in aerated concrete is as easy as shelling pears, and as a result the dowel will not stay in the wall.

Screw in the plastic seal

  • We screw dowels into the drilled holes;

Screw in the self-tapping screw until it stops, so that its head fits flush against the seal.

  • We screw self-tapping screws into the screwed dowels;

After completing the installation work, we do not remove the liners from under the window, as they will provide additional stability to the structure.

Now you can thermally insulate the junction of the profile to the opening

  • Using a spray bottle, generously moisten the technological gap between the opening and the profile;
  • We fill the technological gap around the entire perimeter with mounting foam, so that the excess applied foam comes out from the outside and the gap is completely filled;
  • After the foam has dried, the excess is trimmed with a mounting knife on both sides of the profile.

By the way, how can you attach a thermometer to a window without needlessly making holes in the profile?

Thermometer secured with double-sided tape

It turns out that there is nothing complicated, just buy a special thermometer with Velcro on the glass. Thermometers with ears and mounting holes should be mounted not on plastic, but on wooden frames. But, if you have a thermometer with holes for screws, fasten this device to the profile with short screws - this will not harm the profile.

In conclusion, I note that if you don’t know how to fasten the handle to the profile, you can also use small self-tapping screws that will go through the PVC and be held in the metal frame.

Conclusion

Now you know how to install a PVC window block into an opening of walls of different composition. I hope that the instructions provided were helpful to you. If you have any questions, as usual, ask them in the comments to the text. Also, don't forget to watch the video in this article.

DIY installation of plastic windows in a wooden house

I hope no one will argue that since their appearance on the construction market, plastic windows have proven themselves only on the positive side, although there are a few unpleasant moments, but still. It is precisely because of their excellent performance and ease of installation that more and more homeowners are choosing them. PVC windows can be installed in any window opening without any problems, but when installing in a wooden house, you need to take into account a number of nuances, without which all your work will go down the drain. Further in the article we will consider what these nuances are and will analyze all the stages of installing windows with our own hands.

Materials and tools

To complete this task, in addition to PVC windows, we will need the following materials:

Material
Characteristics Purpose
timber 150*100 Casing installation
Board 50*100 Casing installation
Lnovatin Insulation of the sides of the casing
High-quality insulation Insulating the thermal gap at the top of the casing
Thermal waterproofing tape Waterproofing thermal gap
Galvanized self-tapping screws Casing fastening
Screws for concrete Nagel MRS PVC fastening - windows
Linings Plastic Window installation
Sealant Sealing seams
Polyurethane foam Sealing the gap between the frame and casing

Let's prepare this from the tools:

  • Hammer, drill, screwdriver;
  • Chain saw, ordinary saw, grinder;
  • Hammer and rubber mallet;
  • Paint knife, ordinary knife, pliers, furniture stapler, screwdriver;
  • Construction level, tape measure;
  • Gun for polyurethane foam.

Preparatory work

1. We dismantle the old windows (if there were any), check whether there is a frame or, as it is also called, casing and what condition it is in (casing is the most important element of a window opening in a wooden house and therefore this stage is very, very important). If there is a frame and it is in good condition, you are lucky, you got rid of a lot of work, but if it is not there or it is in poor condition, then read below how to install it.

2. We check the opening for defects such as rot, chips and eliminate them.

3. We treat the opening with a special compound intended for wood, of which there are a lot in construction stores, and move on to the main work.

Installation instructions for PVC windows

Step 1: As I wrote above, the window frame plays, perhaps, a key role in our task of installing plastic windows. But first things first, casing is a structural element that prevents windows from deforming during the shrinkage of a wooden house and therefore its installation is mandatory.

There are several modifications of this design, namely:

1. Casing in the “mortgage block”;
2. Casing into the “deck”;
3. Casing in the “spike monolith”;
4. “Fine” casing.

The last two options are most often used; we will also not reinvent the wheel and make a “spike monolith” casing.

First: Knowing the dimensions of the future window, we mark and cut out the appropriate opening.

Advice: We cut out the window opening at the top 5–10 cm higher than the frame will be installed. This is done in order to provide a thermal gap.

Second: We mark the future groove, usually it is made five centimeters in size. After applying the markings, use a chain saw to select a groove.

Third: We process the side bars. At the first stage, we should get a T-shaped beam “tenon monolith”. After cutting out this figure, all we have to do is make a bed for the top, that is, the upper jumper, it all looks like this.

Advice: If we plan to finish the outside of the house, then we buy rough material, but if the outside of the house is not additionally finished, then we use finishing material based on laminated veneer lumber.

Fourth: We treat the window opening and all elements of the frame with a special product that protects the wood from rotting and other troubles. At the same stage, it is necessary to make thermal insulation between the wall of the house and the window frame; for this purpose, it is best to use flax wool.

Fifth: We install the side elements of the casing, then measure and cut the board for the top bar (top). The top bar needs to be cut so that it fits into the groove of the side bars with little effort. After installing all the elements, we fix them to the walls of the house using self-tapping screws.

Paste a VALID AdSense code in Ads Elite Plugin options before activating it.

Sixth: We insulate the thermal gap left on top of the casing; this is best done with the help of high-quality insulation installed both on the outside of the window and on the inside. Then, the insulation is necessarily hydro- and vapor-insulated with a tape specially designed for such purposes. This tape has a self-adhesive strip, but for more reliable fastening it is better to go over it with a furniture stapler.

From everything I described above you should get the following:

Important: Never use polyurethane foam to insulate a thermal gap, since after hardening it will turn into a very hard substance that will transfer all the loads associated with shrinkage of the house, windows and the window frame will cease to perform its functions.

Step 2: We proceed directly to installing a plastic window in a wooden house; this step, like the previous ones, will be divided into several stages.

1. Remove the glass unit from the window frame. We start with the opening sash, insert the handle into the groove and move it to the open position; there is no need to open the sash. We remove the rod of the upper hinge, open the sash and remove it from the lower hinge.

2. We remove the side glazing beads from the “blind” sash; to do this, with a thin object, for example, a knife, we bend the glazing beads towards the glass unit and back, they should click and remove them. After all the glazing beads are removed, we put on gloves, since the edges of the glass unit are very sharp, and carefully remove the glass unit.

Advice: To avoid the glass unit falling out, first remove the side beads and only then the bottom and top ones.

3. Drill holes in the frame for fasteners. For this purpose we use a 6*70 or longer drill. We drill holes for fasteners at a distance of 15 cm from the corners and imposts of the frame and no more than 70 cm from each other.

4. We try on the prepared window frame, having previously placed plastic pads under the corners and impost. Then we level the window frame using the same shims and a building level, applying it to the places where the glazing beads are attached and installing shims where necessary. Make sure that the upper part of the frame does not rest against the casing. The gap at the top should be at least 1cm.

5. After the frame is leveled and the necessary wedges are placed, we proceed to drilling the walls. It is impossible to cope with such a task alone, because one person will have to drill, and another will have to hold the window frame and look with a level so that the verticality of the window does not go astray. To begin with, we drill two holes at the top and bottom of the frame, insert screws into them, for fastening we will use concrete screws (MRS dowel), tighten them, but not all the way, as it may be necessary to adjust the lateral deflection of the window frame. After leveling the window, tighten all the screws.

Advice: There is no need to tighten the screws too much, as you can knock down the verticality of the window. It will be enough to slightly recess the screw head into the plastic.

6. We foam the gaps between the window frame and the casing. After fifteen minutes, as soon as the foam gains rigidity, you can insert double-glazed windows and finish the window opening. We will not touch upon finishing within the framework of this article, since this topic is very extensive.

Installation of plastic windows in a wooden house - installer's instructions

Unlike foam or reinforced concrete buildings, wooden houses have high instability. This term refers to minimal but constant shrinkage of the structure. The tree “shrinks out” not in 2-3 years, as some experts believe, but in at least 5 years. Of course, shrinkage visible to the naked eye occurs during the first 12 months, but then the home continues to decrease in volume. If you do not take this property into account and, for example, install a plastic window in a wooden house by analogy with reinforced concrete structures, you can seriously pay for the miscalculation.

The shrinkage of timber and logs is from 1 to 2 cm per meter of masonry. That is, a two-story wooden house can reduce its height by 10-12 cm after 5 years. If the owners decide to install plastic windows using generally accepted technologies, they will be disappointed within a year. The entire weight of the structure will put pressure on PVC products; First, the doors will stop opening, and then the frame will crack altogether, ceasing to perform thermal insulation functions. But you don’t need to take extraordinary measures to properly install plastic windows - just install a frame in the window opening.

Design Features

The purpose of the frame (otherwise known as casing) is to give the windows complete independence from the load-bearing walls of the house. The design has several undeniable advantages:

  • it eliminates even the minimum vertical load on the window, since it does not allow the logs to move;
  • does not interfere with the natural shrinkage of the house;
  • serves to strengthen the house in the area of the window opening.

There are two types of casing. In the first case, grooves are made into which wooden blocks of the same dimensions as the window opening are placed. In the second, a ridge is cut out in the latter, onto which a carriage (a log hewn on opposite sides, better known as a gable beam) with a groove is fixed.

It is advisable to install plastic windows in a log house (or timber house) with an assistant, since installation of the frame requires high precision, and the weight of the double-glazed window is sometimes difficult for one person to handle.

Required Tools

To install PVC windows, you will need a basic set of construction supplies, including:

  • drill;
  • screwdriver;
  • chisel;
  • building level;
  • roulette;
  • mallet (wooden hammer);
  • self-tapping screws no more than 10 cm long (extended versions will violate the integrity of logs or beams);
  • polyurethane foam;
  • spacer wedges made of wood;
  • spray bottle with water;
  • gloves.

In addition, you will need a special adjusting hexagon for window structures. There are hundreds of videos on the topic of installing windows in wooden structures that are easy to find. However, the basic and most valuable tips are given below.

Surface preparation stage

The first thing you need to do is dismantle the old window. If its condition is not bad, it may be useful in another matter (for example, when building a country greenhouse). Removing windows is done carefully so as not to damage the wooden walls. After this, the opening is cleared of dust and dirt.

Measuring the parameters of a window opening should be as accurate as possible. It is advisable to record the obtained values on paper. Installing a new window is simple, but just one millimeter of miscalculation can seriously warp it.

If the contour of the opening is not completely smooth, it will have to be leveled using putty or sealant. A properly prepared surface for a new PVC product is characterized by ideal geometry (right angles).

It is also necessary to maintain a reserve for shrinkage at home. This is about 6 cm in height, 2 cm in height and sides for foaming, 4 cm under the window sill.

Depending on the time of year and the current stage of construction, ordering double-glazed windows either precedes dismantling or becomes the final stage. Few people would want to install a window in a wooden house and replace it after a year or two, so some points need to be taken into account. The buyer should decide on the number of sashes, the direction of their opening, the shape, size, and color of future products. And, of course, you should order from reliable manufacturers.

Installation instructions for PVC windows

The ideal distance from the floor to the window sill will be 80-90 cm. This is slightly higher than the desk. The user must lean freely on the window sill, bending the body minimally. The further sequence of actions is given below.

  1. Accurate markings are made for the side and bottom tenons (5x5 cm), after which they are cut out.
  2. In previously prepared and well-dried boards (preferably inch), holes are cut out that will fill the tenons.
  3. The window opening and the frame blank are treated with antifungal impregnation.
  4. Insulation (jute tape, tow, etc.) is attached to the tenon using a construction stapler.
  5. The casing structure is installed in the opening, starting from the window sill. Its elements are connected with self-tapping screws, and the joints are coated with sealant.

In general, the window frame is ready, all that remains is to insulate the upper landing gap. The same jute will do; the opening is caulked as tightly as possible. Now you can install a plastic window inside the opening. To do this, do the following:

  1. Insert the glass unit into the opening, perfectly aligning it with the front edge. Apply a level to make sure the geometry of the sides is correct. To make work easier, first remove the sashes from the insulation units.
  2. Fix the frame inside the opening using self-tapping screws, having previously drilled holes in it.
  3. Fill the gaps between the glass unit and the casing with polyurethane foam.
  4. While the foam has not hardened, install the window sill and screw it.
  5. After the foam has dried, waterproof it on the outside with acrylic sealant, sealing tape or a vapor-permeable membrane, and on the inside with vapor barrier tape.

Due to the installation of an additional structure (casing), it may seem that it is difficult to install windows in a timber or log house, but this is not so. To be confident about the durability of the structure and the reliable performance of functions by PVC products, it is better to allocate a couple of hours for additional work. The casing will allow you to avoid unnecessary expenses as the home shrinks, and will also save the plastic novelty from deformation.

  • preparatory activities before installation;
  • installation of PVC windows;
  • control and verification of location in space;

  • if a decision is made to replace the installed windows in the old opening, first of all, it is necessary to dismantle the structure;
  • after which they clean dust, dirt and remove debris that got into the opening from dismantling;

The window sill is installed strictly horizontally

Secure the frame with self-tapping screws

  • strengthens the opening;
  • bears the load;
  • prevents the effects of shrinkage.

The pigtail looks like a box made from thick boards. The structure is attached to the side rack on a groove, no fasteners are used. There is a gap left above the jamb to compensate for shrinkage for a wooden house. There are several options for installing it:

  • A groove is cut in the log into which the block is placed. Self-tapping screws are screwed into the last element of the embedded beam;
  • a groove is cut out in the racks on the sides of the structure, a tenon is cut out from the end of the log in the opening;
