How to restore a stove in a private house. Do-it-yourself stove repair: typical problems and ways to fix them. Repair without disassembling the stove

For every summer resident, a stove is an excellent help in the household, as well as an opportunity to warm up in winter and provide the family with tasty and healthy food all year round.

Our ancestors knew all the healing properties Russian stoves: they washed in it, cooked, dried mushrooms and berries in it, warmed themselves on a stove bench, and so on. The stove has always been the heart of the house, regardless of its size: a small one with only a hob, or a real Russian stove with a stove bench - it could say everything about its owner!

The stove is used both as a winter heating option and as a summer heating option, intended only for cooking.

There are many different “modern” stove options on the Internet, but if you want to give the room a “zest,” then it’s better to leave the ethnic one rustic style and preserve the flavor that the master tried to bring to his work. Russian bake usually installed in Russian-style huts. But it can be converted into a smaller one by removing only the bed.

Repair brick oven you can do it yourself. Thus, you will not only significantly save your budget, but will also be able to avoid mistakes that irresponsible craftsmen often make.

Safety precautions when repairing a furnace

Before repairing the stove, you must read all safety instructions:

    be sure to use insulating materials to avoid heating the wooden surfaces adjacent to the heated part of the stove;

    pay attention to quality materials : the brick must be clear, without chips or cracks;

    use fatty clay or special mixtures, as well as ;

    Before starting operation, place a sheet of galvanized sheet in front of the furnace vent.

Since ancient times, there have been recipes for preparing good mortar for bricklaying. In order for it to be plastic and lie evenly, add to the finished solution a chicken egg and a little liquid dishwashing detergent. The consistency of the solution should resemble thick sour cream and be without lumps.

The solution should be laid in an even layer, without bald spots or voids, since hot air entering such an “air pocket” can contribute to the appearance of cracks.

Heating in the house

The heating system can have several types:

    The room is heated only by a small stove with a hob. This option is suitable for a small space, as well as in cases where you rarely visit the dacha.

    Heating using a heating system in the form of pipes passing through the furnace. In this option, heat is accumulated and distributed through pipes filled with antifreeze or water. The option is perfect for heating a room of 40 m2, but you should take into account the features and costs (you need to purchase a pressure meter, a pump, supply water to the house, etc.).

    Heating a room using fireplace. The fireplace gives off heat well during the burning of wood, but does not retain it. This option is suitable for quickly warming up a room to room temperature, but it is not profitable to use it all the time.

    An ordinary stove is rough or potbelly stove. This type of stove does not take up much space and is the most economical option for a summer resident. The efficiency of this type of furnace is very high - this is due to its structure and the presence of many passages.

Restoration and decor

You can decorate the stove with the following materials:

    Heat-resistant tiles. This type of tile must be laid on a clean and level surface, using construction crosses for the seams. The tiles can be combined with various bas-relief edgings and frescoes.The advantages of the tile are obvious: it is easy to care for, and it also maintains a presentable appearance for a long time.

    Coating with enamel paint. The walls of the oven are covered with white paint, which reacts well to temperature changes. You can apply drawings to the main background with paints, using stencils, or paint the oven with aerosols. But it should be taken into account that when enamel paint is heated at first, it will emit an unpleasant odor, which will go away over time.

    Whitewash or lime. Add salt to the lime and water mixture to give the stove a snow-white shine and shine.Whitewash and lime are natural antiseptics that have a beneficial effect on human health and do not emit harmful substances.

Types of faults and their repair

Let's look at the most common cases when furnace repair is simply necessary:

    The appearance of smoke and carbon monoxide in the room. Smoke from brickwork can be attributed to minor repairs . In order to “patch up” the oven, use rich red clay or special mixture , which is sold in construction stores. Coat It is necessary to cool the oven to allow the clay to dry evenly.

    A crack on one of the furnace walls.This situation can be corrected by rebuilding the entire furnace structure. Furnace repair you should start by disassembling the upper part of the structure. After you have disassembled the top, look at the base: if it is not cracked and has a smooth structure, does not bend, without changes, then you can leave it. For temporary use, secure the stove with a metal belt and seal the gap with mortar. Just remember that such a belt cannot be adjacent closely, as the metal may burst when heated.

    No traction. The case is rare and is justified by curvature or the appearance cracks in the chimney pipe. The pipe must be moved slightly at an incline. If you have 2 stoves with one pipe for removing soot, then you need to make a “bridge”.

    Note: Good draft is ensured by proper construction of the stove, as well as compliance with all construction standards.

    The fire in the new stove goes out. This phenomenon suggests that bake poorly dried. It is necessary to open all the doors and ventilate it. Then you should begin gradually calcining the stove, increasing the temperature and the amount of firewood.

    The brick inside the firebox cracked.This indicates that the brick is combustion chamber warmed up unevenly or there was a sharp temperature change. Make things right having sealed chipped with clay mortar and then dried well.

    A door or other metal part has broken off. As a rule, metal parts are “fitted” into the furnace structure with pins, even at the construction stage, and it is almost impossible to get them with minimal losses. Replace the door This is only possible by completely disassembling the stove (use a respirator to protect yourself from dust getting into your respiratory tract).

The costs for repairing a furnace include the following items:

    dismantling the old stove;

    purchase of new bricks, metal parts (if it is impossible to use old ones);

    acquisition of all related tools (construction level, tape measure, small hammer, trowel for laying mortar, trough for mixing mortar);

    delivery and unloading of construction materials.

Repair old making a stove with your own hands is much cheaper than building a new one, because you will save on paying the master.

It is important to know: need toMake sure you have good lighting first. Use a table lamp or spotlight, as well as an extension cord. You will have to change position often and move a lot. It is best if the light passes at a slightly angle - this way you will see all the irregularities along the base of the masonry.

Any stove can be remodeled and made more functional - it all depends on your wishes. The ideal option is a small baby stove with a hob and a combination heating systems with a couch, and it’s also possible.

A wood stove can be made as in private wooden at home and in the bathhouse. Sometimes baths are used for heating muffle a compact stove designed to heat a small room. It does not have a special decorative appearance, but the walls hold the temperature well for a long time.

Please note: PBefore choosing bricks, be sure to check that the seller has quality certificates. Carefully inspect the product for defects: smooth edges, uniform texture, absence of lumps and humps, ringing sound when tapped - all this indicates the excellent quality of the raw materials from which it is made.

Watch the video in which an experienced master shares his own experience in repairing a brick stove:

No matter how reliable and properly built a wood stove is, sooner or later the time will come to repair it. Temperature fluctuations, irregular use, mechanical stress, dampness and other factors lead to cracks in the masonry, loosening of doors, clogging of chimneys, etc. Anyone can do a simple repair of brick stoves with their own hands if they know how to do it correctly.

We are not talking about complex manipulations that require knowledge about the structure of the hearth. In such cases, it is better to entrust the work to a professional. But some actions are completely within the capabilities of “dummies.” We will talk about them.

Repair work

What defects require mandatory intervention? This is the appearance of cracks on the surface, spalling of the mortar from the seams, and loose bricks in the masonry. And, of course, smoke escapes into the room through cracks and crevices around metal parts.

Let's take a closer look at how to eliminate each of these shortcomings with your own hands.

Advice. Before any repairs, the oven must be slightly warmed up.

Replacing bricks

If the mortar from the seams has crumbled so much that it no longer holds the brick, it needs to be strengthened. Or, if it itself has cracked or fallen apart, replace it.

It is important! The new brick should be the same in composition and characteristics as the old one. Otherwise, the expansion with increasing temperature will be different, which will again lead to the same problem.

The algorithm for replacing bricks is shown in the table:

Image Description of actions
To remove a damaged masonry element, you need to destroy the seam around it. To do this, it is most convenient to use a drill with a drill, which is often used to drill holes in the seam.

If you don't have a drill, a chisel and hammer will do.

The resulting hole must be cleaned of any remaining solution and moistened well with water. It is also advisable to keep the brick itself in water.
The repair mortar is applied to the horizontal surface of the hole and the side walls.
We coat the brick with mortar on top and sides, and then carefully install it in place. We remove the excess mortar and smooth the seam.
If repairing a brick stove requires replacing part of the masonry, we disassemble it so that the remaining elements are intact and stand like a “ladder.”

We will talk a little further about how and what to prepare the repair mortar from.

Strengthening stove fittings

Very often, cracks appear around the doors of the combustion chamber, the ash pan, and the cast iron hob. This is due to the fact that metal and clay have different thermal expansions.

But this does not mean that they cannot be compensated. It is possible, and for this purpose special heat-resistant materials are used as gaskets and seals. For example, basalt wool or ceramic stove cord.

Note. Previously, repairs to the firebox of a brick kiln were carried out using asbestos materials. This should not be done, since asbestos releases toxic substances when heated.

This type of repair looks like this step by step:

Image Description of actions
After the oven has warmed up, remove the stove by picking it up with an ax or chisel.

We clean the seat from the solution and thoroughly wash off the soot with water.

The primer mixture is prepared from heat-resistant glue, which is diluted in half with water.

We prime the installation site of the slab with this solution.

The ceramic cord is designed specifically for such work. It can withstand direct fire and temperatures up to 1000 degrees.

It is advisable to check its fire resistance when purchasing so as not to run into a fake.

The cord around the perimeter of the plate seat is secured with heat-resistant glue.

A cast iron cooking surface is placed on top of it, on top of the solution.

Small cracks are simply sealed with repair mortar.

First, a ceramic cord is laid in wide and deep cracks, then the repair mixture.

As for the mortar, repairing a brick oven with your own hands will be of higher quality and more durable if you add 10% Portland cement and 10% heat-resistant glue primer to the sand and clay. Although, you can buy a ready-made dry mixture and dilute it according to the instructions on the package.

Sealing cracks and crevices

Before covering the cracks, the surface of the stove must be washed from soot, since the solution will not stick to it due to the high fat content in it.

So, before we begin the repair, we lightly heat our fireplace.

Image Description of actions
We clean out the old mortar from the seams and wash them with a brush and water.
Then prime with a well-known mixture of heat-resistant glue
We cover the seams with repair mixture, trying to fill them to the full depth. Remove excess solution while it is fresh.
The solution should dry naturally within 24 hours, after which the oven can be lightly heated to dry the new seams completely.

A few words about ready-made dry mixes

You can ideally repair brick stoves with your own hands, but if the solution does not meet the operating conditions, all the work will go down the drain. But preparing the “correct” mixture is not so easy; professionals have been studying this for years.

Therefore, it is better not to experiment, but to buy a ready-made dry mixture. There must be a mark on it that it is intended specifically for laying and repairing stoves and fireplaces.

Such mixtures are made on the basis of fireclay clay and are fireproof. They can also be used to plaster the walls of the oven to ensure that all cracks are covered.

It is very easy to prepare a working solution from dry powder - the instructions on the package contain information on how to do this and what proportions to use.

  • Plaster the stoves on a surface moistened with water, applying and smoothing the solution with a spatula.

  • If necessary, after the first has dried, apply a second leveling layer and wait for the coating to dry.
  • After this, the oven is heated. The heat causes the solution to harden completely.
  • If small cracks appear on the surface, they are covered with the same, but more liquid solution. You can use a brush for this.

Chimney cleaning

Quite often, the stove begins to smoke in the absence of any visible defects or damage.

The reason lies in the chimney being clogged:

  • It can literally become overgrown with soot, especially if coniferous wood was used for the firebox or household waste was burned in the fireplace;

  • Wind-blown debris from the street could have gotten into the pipe. Sometimes there are even dead birds there;
  • Another common cause is a broken piece of brick or a whole brick that has fallen out of the masonry.

All these factors negatively affect the cravings that need to be restored.

If the stove is built correctly, it should have special doors for cleaning the chimney. They are opened and debris and soot are removed from the internal cavity using a dustpan, a hard brush and a broom.

After cleaning, you need to check the draft by holding a burning paper or candle to the open door. Smoke should be actively drawn into the hole.

More serious blockages will require mechanical cleaning of the chimney from above, from the roof. A weight tied to a strong long rope or chain is lowered into it, breaking through the blockage. The debris that has fallen down is removed from the firebox.

Advice. Burning aspen wood in a stove will help to completely clean the channel. When burning, it gives the maximum temperature at which the soot burns out.

Conclusion

Knowing how to repair a brick stove, you can save a lot on the services of a master. And in order to have to do this less often, try to regularly care for the stove, lubricating any cracks that appear. Clean the chimney at least once a year and do not burn household waste in the firebox.

In the video in this article you can see an example of self-repair of a home fireplace.

A brick oven can last for several decades if you regularly carry out preventive maintenance and promptly repair damage and breakdowns. Depending on the complexity of the work, furnace repairs are usually divided into current, medium and major. Minor problems can easily be fixed in a few hours, but major problems can take several days. To save on stove repair costs and extend the service life of the stove, it is recommended to carry out repairs in the first years of operation.

Current repairs: prevention of serious damage

Troubleshooting minor problems

Any owner can carry out minor repairs to a stove in a country house or in a residential building, even if he does not have construction skills.

  1. Scuffs that appear on the pre-furnace sheet make cleaning difficult and can cause a fire. The leaky metal must be removed, the flooring must be protected with a sheet of asbestos and roofing steel of the required size must be nailed on top.
  2. To replace the grate, you need to remove the old part from the furnace and clean the area of soot. The new grille should be exactly the same size as the failed one. It is laid in place without mortar in the same way as the old grate bars.
  3. Twice a year it is necessary to inspect the chimney for foreign objects and debris. To clean soot from channels, it is recommended to use special chemicals.

Renewing masonry joints

Leaky seams spoil the appearance of the brickwork and allow harmful gases into the room. To detect weak areas, it is recommended to heat the stove - this will make large cracks visible. To eliminate the problem, it is necessary to clear the seams by 2-3 cm, after soaking them with water. Next, the walls are washed well with clean water using a brush.

Deepening the seams of brickwork

The resulting depressions are filled with new clay mortar, carefully compacting the mixture and wiping out the voids. To increase the resistance of the solution to cracking, you can add a little table salt to the clay - 300–350 grams per bucket of solution. It is recommended to seal wide cracks with fire-resistant cord. If necessary, the walls are plastered and whitewashed or tiled.

Sealing of the combustion door and hob

The cracks that form between the doors and the masonry due to mechanical loads and thermal expansion also begin to let dangerous gases into the room. Do-it-yourself stove repair in this case begins with cleaning the surface and removing the old mortar. The cleaned area is washed and primed with heat-resistant glue diluted in the same volume of water.

Ceramic cord for sealing

A sealing asbestos or ceramic cord is attached around the perimeter of the door - it protects the clay from cracking, compensating for differences in the thermal expansion of materials. To avoid buying a fake instead of a fire-resistant cord, experienced stove makers recommend setting fire to your purchase without leaving the cash register. Next, the area around the door is rubbed with a repair solution and left to dry for at least a day.

Grouting the seams above the door

Similarly, the gaps that appear between the hob and the walls are eliminated. To remove the stove, the stove should be heated a little, and then pry off the cast iron with a hard metal object, for example, an ax. Instead of a cord in this case, you can use basalt wool or felt. If possible, the old stove can be replaced with a more modern one.

Fastening the cord under the stove

Repair work of medium complexity

Medium-level faults will also not be difficult to eliminate without the involvement of specialists. This approach will help you save on stove maker services.

Repair and refurbishment of the firebox

Over time, the refractory brick from which the firebox is made deteriorates and requires attention. Do-it-yourself repairs to the furnace firebox are carried out through the firebox door. In case of minor damage, the damaged areas are restored using clay mortar or a factory-produced fire-resistant masonry mixture. If several bricks are damaged, you can get by with partial replacement. To do this, soak and clear the solution in the right place and remove the damaged element. New bricks are carefully inserted into the voids and carefully sealed. It is advisable to use the same composition that was used during construction.

The furnace needs a major overhaul

It is not always possible to completely replace the lining through the combustion hole; in some cases it is necessary to disassemble the wall. If the top of the stove is covered by a hob, then it is easier to get to the combustion chamber from above. The new lining is made of fireclay bricks, not forgetting that the refractory material should not be tied with the one from which the furnace body is made. In large kilns, the brick is laid flat, in small and medium-sized kilns - on the edge.

Dismantling a cast iron ceiling

Renewing the lining and laying the seal for the cast iron slab

Replacing the fire door

A new cast iron door must have the same parameters as the one that has become unusable. To avoid mistakes, you need to measure the width and length of the product before purchasing. The old door is dismantled along with the frame, clearing the masonry as much as possible in the right places. So that the masonry mortar can be easily and quickly removed, it is soaked with water. Just in case, you need to stock up on a few bricks - they will be needed if during dismantling unexpected damage occurs or unusable bricks are discovered. Steel legs are attached to the new cast iron door and installed so that the strips are in the masonry joints. An asbestos or ceramic cord must be laid between the masonry and the frame. The gaps are filled with solution, carefully eliminating all cracks.

Restoration of brickwork

Major repairs are rarely complete without replacing damaged bricks. Most often the problem occurs above the fire door. The damaged elements are carefully removed from the structure, having previously soaked the solution, and the resulting “window” is cleaned of clay residues. The new brick is immersed in water for a few minutes and placed on a refractory mortar, after which any gaps are filled and the seams are rubbed. When repairing a sauna stove, it is recommended to seal large cracks with a mortar with the addition of brick chips made from refractory bricks. Repairing a Russian stove in many cases involves restoring a damaged or sagging vault. As a rule, to eliminate the damage, it is necessary to make a new circle and reposition the brick in this area. The second weak spot of the Russian stove is underneath; here the burnt out bricks can be easily removed and replaced with new ones.

For those who do not feel strong enough to repair a brick oven with their own hands, we do not recommend taking on the job. In this case, as well as if complex chimney repairs are necessary, it is better to immediately seek professional help from experienced stove makers.

Over time, clay seams around stove doors, stoves and other metal fittings crumble due to mechanical stress and temperature fluctuations. This happens due to the difference in thermal expansion of metal and brickwork. Smoke begins to seep through the painted seams of a brick stove, the cracks begin to smoke, the stove loses its aesthetic appearance, and a smoky smell appears in the air. All these troubles and subsequent repairs of the brick kiln can be avoided if these inevitable problems of the brick kiln are taken into account when laying the kiln. So, a thick ceramic thermal insulating heat-resistant sealing cord can be laid around the stove doors. It will compensate for the greater change in the geometric dimensions of cast iron stove fittings. The same cord can be used to seal the seams between bricks near a cast iron stove. The seams between the bricks and around the doors are filled with a mixture of clay masonry mortar with fireclay clay and an admixture of heat-resistant glue (10-20% of the volume). This mixture has greater plasticity when laying and greater strength and heat resistance when operating a brick kiln. You cannot use absbestos heat-insulating materials for the kiln - they are strong carcinogens. If you don’t have a ceramic thermal insulation cord at hand, you can reinforce the solution for problematic seams with basalt wool fibers or even sheep’s wool (felt). Let's see how we repaired a brick stove with our own hands (the stove maker asked 7.5 rubles for this work).

So, before us is a brick hob connected to a brick heating panel. Over the 7 years of operation of this brick stove, smoke began to emanate from under the cast-iron stove, the clay seams near the cast-iron door and near the cast-iron stove crumbled and smoke also emanated from them. Since the invited stove maker quoted an inadequate price for repairs, in our opinion, we decided to undertake the repair of the brick stove ourselves. Important point: all repair work on the stove is carried out when the stove is heated (warm). First, remove the cast-iron stove from the brick stove by prying it with an ax.We inspect the brick oven: the clay has crumbled from the seams, there is a lot of soot and ash inside, traces of soot are visible under the landing site of the cast-iron stove. We determine the scope of work for repairing the stove: we clean out the ash and soot, clean the seams, wash them, prime them with heat-resistant glue diluted 1 to 1 with water, rub the seams, lay heat-resistant insulation cord under the cast iron stove. To repair a brick oven, we use a repair mixture for seams: fine sand, rubbed clay, 10% cement, 10% heat-resistant glue. We reinforce the seams with ceramic cord or basalt wool fibers or felt (sheep's wool).Before repairing the seams of a brick kiln, the remaining clay is mechanically removed from them, the seam is thoroughly washed with a brush and water, and then primed with a 50% solution of heat-resistant glue in water. During repairs, we rub the seams of the brick oven with a repair compound. We make sure that there are no voids left in the seams of the brickwork. Then the seams are rubbed down to match the overall appearance of the stove finish. (we did not grout - a border of ceramic tiles will be laid on top - without glue)We inspect the defect in the seam above the furnace door of the stove. We remove the remaining clay and, in the same way when repairing a seam, wash it and prime it. The gap can be large - so you can place a ceramic cord or basalt wool mixed with a repair mortar inside. In order not to stain the door, we seal it with paint tape. It was also necessary to seal the bricks of the stove - then there would be no need to scrape off the excess repair mortar from the masonry after the stove repair was completed.Ceramic heat-resistant cord - we bought a thin one, but there are thicker cords. This cord can withstand open fire and temperatures above 1000 C. ATTENTION! This cord turned out to be a fake - it burned out during the first heating. When purchasing, check the fire resistance of the cord using a match! (the manufacturer replaced the cord for us with a real one) We lay the heat-resistant cord around the perimeter of the seat for the cast-iron stove on islands of heat-resistant glue. Such an operation would have to be performed when laying the stove, but 7 years ago such ceramic cords were not yet on sale. The insulation made of an unknown sealing material (similar to white glass wool) that the stove maker laid was all burnt out and crumbled.View of a brick oven after repair. The seams could have been done more carefully, but the owner wants to lay a border of ceramic tiles around the perimeter to make it easier to clean the stove. After a day, we slowly melt the stove and check for any smoke leaks. Everything turned out to be fine. The smoke leaks have disappeared. The brick oven has been repaired!

When should furnace repairs be carried out?

The opinion that stove heating remains only in villages is nothing more than a stereotype. Owners of new houses and cottages often use this type of heating. Putting together a new stove is only half the battle; you also need to know how to care for it and, if necessary, make routine repairs. During long-term use, a number of problems may arise, which either a specialist will help you solve, or, using some advice, you yourself.

Regular preventive measures will help avoid serious damage to your brick kiln.

The main sign that your furnace is in immediate need of repair is insufficient draft, when smoke ends up indoors instead of coming out.

This is not only unaesthetic, but also extremely dangerous, as it can cause fumes.

What are the reasons why stoves start smoking? Firstly, this may be a consequence of a large amount of soot deposited in the chimney. Therefore, after the end of the heating season, it is always necessary to clean all outlets and pipes from excess deposits. Secondly, the thin walls of the masonry can remind you of themselves. Due to extreme cold, they can freeze or become damp, causing the passing gases to cool. Cracks and crevices may also form through which smoke seeps into the room.
You can begin routine repairs with your own hands by preparing the necessary materials and tools:

  • clay;
  • sand;
  • water;
  • sieve for straining clay;
  • fastening materials: cement, asbestos;
  • heat-resistant glue;
  • ceramic heat-resistant cord for oven;
  • masonry tools.

All about do-it-yourself mortar for masonry and grouting cracks

What mortar should I use for laying stoves?

Stages of removing old whitewash: a – moistening with a roller; b – removing the whitewash layer with a spatula.

For ovens, it is necessary to use a clay solution. It is perfect not only for cleaning cracks, but also for laying bricks. The proportions of the solution should be calculated as follows. Depending on the fat content of the clay, 1-3 volumes of sand are required per volume of clay, and you will also need water.

A day before starting work, the clay needs to be soaked, then add as much water until you get a consistency similar to a creamy mass. All light impurities will float to the surface, so the solution must be filtered through a special sieve. Only after this can sand be added to the clay and mixed until all the puddles disappear.

You should not add the entire volume of sand at once; it is better to add it in small portions. A good oven mortar should not eventually crack.

How to avoid cracks in stove plaster?

Since the plaster must withstand constant temperature changes, the solution must be durable and resistant to cracking. For plastering the following are most often used:

  • lime-clay;
  • lime-gypsum;
  • cement-clay-sand mortars.

To any type of mixture, additional materials must be added: fiberglass, foam, asbestos or straw. There is no consensus on salt, so its use comes down to personal discretion.

Typical questions when repairing a stove yourself

How to seal cracks?

To begin, the cracks need to be cleared to a depth of 20-40 mm and all old mortar removed. After this, the cleaned surface must be moistened with plenty of water. To clean cracks, you need to add salt and asbestos powder in small portions to the clay solution, then thoroughly rub all the holes with the resulting mixture.

How to replace cracked brick?

Before laying a new brick, the cracked one must be removed from the seat and the place for the mortar must be cleared. The new brick must match the dimensions, otherwise after a while it will also need to be changed. The masonry site and the new brick must be moistened with plenty of water, then spread with a clay solution and put in place.

How to use ceramic heat resistant cord?

Most cracks occur near the stove door. In order to compensate for the expansion of cast iron fittings, a sealant is used - a ceramic heat-resistant cord. Feel free to check its quality in the store to avoid counterfeiting.

The area around the fittings must be cleared and washed with a mixture of water and heat-resistant glue (1:1). After this, you need to lay the cord around the perimeter and treat it with a solution, adding a small amount of heat-resistant glue or cement to it in advance.

If you have problems finding such a cord, you can replace it with basalt or felt.

How long should I wait for the stove to dry?

In order for the masonry to be strong, a day after all work, you can slightly melt the stove, thereby ensuring the gradual drying of the solution.

Laying of the furnace of an improved (with a stove in a hearth) Russian stove: a - general view of the stove; b - 1st row, c - 2nd row; g - 7th row; 1, 3 - pads; 2-1st row of the main chimney; 4-ash pan of the stove; 5-stops.

We offer you some tips to help ensure high-quality maintenance of the furnace with your own hands:

  1. Any DIY repair, from filling cracks to replacing bricks, should only be started when the stove is warm. That is, the stove should be heated a little beforehand.
  2. You can check the plasticity of clay in the following way if, after rubbing it between your fingers, you still cannot determine anything. The mixture of clay and water must be stirred with a wooden plank. If the layer of clay on it is thick, then you need to add another portion of sand to the solution.
  3. If the appearance of cracks and deterioration of the masonry is associated with external reasons, then the stove requires not routine, but major repairs in order to avoid repeated problems. Major repairs can also be done with your own hands, or you can seek help from a specialist.
  4. The location of the blockage in the chimney can be determined by heating the stove or by passing a wire through the doors to clean out the soot. Current repairs are unlikely to help you in this case.
  5. To prevent the ceramic heat-resistant cord from burning during the first use, check its fire resistance at the time of purchase. Feel free to ask the seller to check it for you.

If routine repairs are not delayed, the stove will last for decades. This will be much cheaper and easier to carry out than a major overhaul - reconstruction of an old stove or laying a new stove.
