How to install a tulip sink in a bathroom. How to install a tulip sink in the bathroom with your own hands, video. Detailed instructions for installing a tulip sink

In this article we will talk about what a tulip sink for a bathroom is, how this plumbing equipment is installed and how it is operated. After all, despite the fact that many compatriots are well aware of what a tulip bathroom sink looks like, not every person knows how to choose the appropriate option and how to install it.

Design features

Before finding out how much it costs to order installation work from specialists, let’s determine the main design features of tulip shells.

Essentially, this is an ordinary ceramic washbasin without any special additional functions. The main difference between this device is the “leg” - this is a kind of hollow pedestal from the inside that is installed under the bowl.

The “leg” performs two main functions:

  • takes on the mechanical load exerted by the washbasin and thus ensures the reliability and stability of the entire structure;
  • serves as a decorative design for water pipes that provide supply and drainage of water.

Advantages and disadvantages

Before installing a tulip sink in the bathroom, let's consider the main advantages of this solution.

  • Variety of sizes, configurations and colors– this is the advantage thanks to which you can choose the washbasin that will suit your preferences and optimally fit into the interior of the bathroom.
  • Relatively low price in comparison with the cost of more technically complex modifications of washbasins. This advantage will allow you to choose the washbasin that will fit the budget allocated for the arrangement of the bathroom.
  • Compact design– another advantage due to which such sinks can be installed both in full-size rooms and in bathrooms with limited space. However, despite their compact dimensions, devices of this type can effectively hide communications that supply water and.
  • Easy to install such plumbing fixtures, and therefore the ability to carry out installation work with your own hands without the need to involve specialists. Of course, you can entrust the installation to professionals, but the price of such a service will probably be high, and therefore it would be better to do everything yourself.

Are there any disadvantages? There are no significant disadvantages in the design of these washbasins, but you need to remember that because of the legs, you won’t be able to use useful cabinets under the sink.

Main varieties

The instructions for carrying out installation work largely depend on what type of sink was purchased.

Tulips are classified according to the following criteria:

  1. Design features according to which three categories of washbasins are distinguished:
    • Monolithic modifications, where the sink is combined with a pedestal into a single whole, are presented on the market in limited quantities. The price of such a modification is high, which is explained by production difficulties. A characteristic feature of a monolithic washbasin is the absence of a stop; the sink and pedestal are a single and indivisible product.
    • Modifications consisting of a separate bowl have a clear advantage over monolithic products, since if the siphon is clogged, it is enough to move the leg, rather than moving the entire structure.

    • Modifications in which the pedestal does not touch the floor are good because they can be set at the height you need, which guarantees additional comfort during operation. Again, installing such a washbasin makes cleaning the room easier.
  1. According to their location, tulips are divided into the following types:
    • Conventional modifications with the ability to install along a flat wall are the most popular, as they can be installed in almost any bathroom.
    • Corner modifications are an excellent solution for cramped bathrooms. As the name implies, such structures are intended exclusively for installation in the corner of the room. As a rule, the size of a corner tulip sink is small.
  1. According to the type of production materials, modifications made of earthenware, porcelain, stone and glass are distinguished.

Important: Recently, a number of brands have mastered the production of acrylic tulips. The distinctive advantage of acrylic products is their affordable price and low weight, which simplifies installation.

Features of installation work

After we have found out what the classification is, we will decide how to install the tulip sink.

The installation instructions are simple, you just need to carry out all the work step by step in a certain order.

  • First, you need to bring the water supply to the right place and install a drain in the floor.
  • After the communications are installed, we install the tulip sink mount.
    The installation technology is largely determined by the type of fastening element. Therefore, before starting work, read the user manual, which should be included in the package. In any case, we make marks for the fastenings, periodically checking their position relative to the horizon with a water level.

Important: Bathroom finishing is often done using ceramic tiles.
Holes in such material should be drilled without using impact modes.
By following this simple rule, you will avoid the formation of cracks and chips on the tiles.

  • We put the bowl on the mounted fasteners and immediately check that it does not swing. If there is any swaying, remove the bowl and check the position of the brackets with a water level.
  • We install the mixer and connect the water supply.
  • We install the siphon and connect it to the drain using a corrugated hose.
  • Check the tightness of the connections. If there is no leak, slightly lift the bowl and insert the “leg”.

Conclusion

Now we know what a pedestal tulip sink is and how it is installed. In order to get answers to the remaining questions, you can watch the video in this article.

As a rule, a “tulip” sink is monolithic or consists of separate components - a bowl and a stand. Despite the presence of pedestals

tal, often such a sink is attached to the wall using brackets or dowels. The sink can also rest on a pedestal, but in this case it is firmly attached to the wall.

How to install a tulip

“Tulips”, like other types of sinks, come with a hole and are blind. For standard “Soviet” bathrooms, where the pipework requires the installation of one mixer for a shower and a sink, the option without a hole is more suitable.

If the drain fittings are not included in the kit, then they should be installed at the same time as the siphon so that the structure is

through a hole in the upper part of the bowl, it flows into a siphon through a special channel inside the ceramics. You need to know that standard domestic siphons are not suitable for such sinks. There is nowhere to drain the water coming from the overflow system. Therefore, it will be necessary to purchase a special siphon in the kit suitable specifically for such a system.

“Tulip” sinks, in addition to their winning design, are distinguished by the ability to hide all communications in the base leg. A carefully and securely installed “tulip” will not be damaged by protruding pipes, taps and valves.

Installing a tulip sink

In the post-Soviet space, “tulip” sinks have become very popular for their pleasant appearance and ease of use. Tulip sinks are installed everywhere today, both in small apartments and in huge Premium class cottages, and the reason for this is the obvious advantages of the “tulip” - strength, variety of assortment, durability and convenience. But before moving on to the specifics of installing a “tulip”, it’s worth taking a closer look at what such a sink is and what its advantages are. The first thing you should pay attention to is the leg, which plays the role of a pedestal and which takes on part of the load that falls on the sink. It is due to this stem that this type of product got its name, for its resemblance to a flower with a thin and long stem.
Installation of a tulip sink begins with the installation of water supply and sewerage pipes to its location. The bowl of the product is installed on a pedestal, after which the locations for placing brackets or the locations of holes for bolts in the wall are marked. Yes, don’t be surprised, the tulip sink is installed not only on the leg, but also on a bracket, or a hidden mount inside the tulip itself. This is due to the fact that the leg will not be able to provide the necessary stability to the bowl and the entire structure under high load may collapse or fall to one side.

After placing and fixing the bowl, the installation of the tulip sink continues by connecting the bowl to the siphon, which connects it to the sewer system, and then connecting the mixer to the water pipes using a flexible connection. It is worth making an important caveat at this point: many people break the sequence and connect first the water supply and then the siphon. But if some kind of gasket or mixer turns out to be faulty, flooding, even if small, is inevitable, while preliminary connection of the siphon and sewer system will avoid excess moisture on the floor of the room. Connecting the tulip sink ends by placing the leg under the bowl, which will hide unaesthetic communications. It is recommended to apply a layer of transparent silicone sealant at the junction of the bowl and pedestal to increase the service life of the sanitary ware. Well, of course, it is not recommended to install and connect it yourself, but it is worth inviting a professional plumber. The cost of the work is only 1500 rubles.

The most common type of sink in modern bathrooms is the pedestal or so-called tulip sink. This floor-standing washbasin fits perfectly into both classic and ultra-modern interiors. In addition, its advantages include functionality, practicality and durability.

As a rule, a “tulip” sink is monolithic or consists of separate components - a bowl and a stand. Despite the presence of a pedestal, such a sink is often attached to the wall using brackets or dowels. The sink can also rest on a pedestal, but in this case it is firmly attached to the wall.

“Tulip” sinks, like other types of sinks, come with a hole for installing a mixer and are solid. For standard “Soviet” bathrooms, where the pipework requires the installation of one mixer for a shower and a sink, the option without a hole is more suitable.
If the drain fittings are not included in the kit, then you should purchase the sink at the same time as the siphon so that the designs are compatible. It is also advisable to buy a faucet at the same time as purchasing a sink. Almost all imported, and now many domestic sinks have overflow protection (“overflow” system). Water flows through a hole in the top of the bowl through a special channel inside the ceramic into a siphon.

A carefully and securely installed “tulip” will not spoil the interior of the bathroom with protruding pipes, taps and valves.

Processed

When renovating a bathroom, you have to select and install accessories that are needed for comfortable and practical daily use. These include plumbing fixtures such as sinks. The market offers a huge range of sinks of different designs, colors, shapes, and they are made from different materials. You can easily choose the desired option for yourself. A very convenient and interesting solution would be to buy a sink called “Tulip”. In order for the sink to please you with its beauty and function fully, it is necessary to carry out the installation correctly. The topic that will be covered in our article is installing a “tulip” sink with your own hands.

Sink tulip

“Tulip” sinks were known back in Soviet times, but then they were not so original, elegant and creative. The design has not changed much since those times, but various materials and original design methods began to be used for its manufacture. Nowadays, this sink is an interesting element in the interior of the bathroom.

Before moving on to the question of how to install a “tulip” sink, let’s look at the features of this washbasin.

The “tulip” sink consists of two elements - a washbasin and a pedestal.

The pedestal performs the following functions:

  • Provides stability and reliability of the structure, as it takes all the mechanical load exerted by the sink completely.
  • Hides siphon, sewer pipes and other unsightly details.

Important! The “tulip” sink will help make your bath more compact and will perfectly highlight any design solution.

Main types

When installing, you must carefully read the instructions, since installation will depend on the type of washbasin you purchased.

I classify these shells according to several criteria.

Design

Depending on the design features, there are three types:

  • Monolithic - when the pedestal and the sink itself are a single whole. The peculiarity of such products is the absence of a sink stop - this is a solid and indivisible device.
  • Consisting of a separate bowl, they are convenient because when cleaning the siphon you do not need to move the entire structure; you just need to move the leg.
  • Modifications in which the leg does not touch the floor. The advantage is that they can be installed at any height you require.

Location

There are two types:

  • Corner - great for small bathrooms. Installation is carried out only in the corner of the room. Basically, such sinks are small in size.
  • Conventional - they are installed along a flat wall. This is the most popular option, since they can be installed in any bathroom.

Materials

Depending on the materials from which they are made, models are distinguished from:

  • porcelain;
  • earthenware;
  • glass;
  • stone

Important! A lot of brands have recently started producing “tulips” from acrylic. Such products are lightweight and affordable.

Advantages and disadvantages

Before installing a tulip in the bathroom, let’s consider the main advantages of this product:

  • Low price when compared with other modifications of washbasins. You can easily choose a tulip washbasin to suit your budget.
  • A large selection of sizes, shapes and colors - you can easily choose a product that will harmoniously fit into your bathroom interior.
  • Compactness - installation of such sinks can be done in a room of any size, and also hide all incoming water and drainage communications.
  • Easy installation - you can easily install it yourself.

Important! There are no major shortcomings in this product. The only drawback is the impossibility of installing a bedside table under the structure due to the pedestal.

Sink installation

The design of the product is simple and does not consist of complex elements. Installation will not be difficult for you.

Required tools and materials:

  • Screwdrivers.
  • Drill.
  • Drill.
  • Key.
  • Hammer.
  • Level.
  • Bolts.
  • Silicone sealant.
  • Marker.

Installation

Installing a “tulip” washbasin consists of the following steps:

  • Bring the supply to the right place and arrange a drain in the floor.
  • Mark with a marker the place where the holes will be made in the wall to which the sink will be attached.

Important! The holes in the wall should match the holes in the leg.

  • Use a drill to make a hole at the marked location.
  • Attach a siphon and a mesh with a gasket to the underside of it with bolts to the stand, and carefully seal it.
  • Install the tulip sink bowl onto the tie bolts.
  • Install a pedestal in the center of the bowl.

Important! Be sure to route the corrugated hose into the drain pipe through a special opening.

  • Secure the entire structure to the wall using bolts and washers.
  • Seal all joints with transparent silicone sealant to reduce leaks and connect the product to the wall as tightly as possible.
  • Connect a faucet to the sewer pipe system.

Installation will take you a little time if you strictly follow these instructions.

How to disassemble a sink?

It happens that it is necessary to change pipes or some other plumbing equipment that is hidden behind the leg.

How to remove a tulip sink:

  • Turn off the water and check by opening the faucet to see if water is flowing.
  • Carefully remove the siphon, then the drain, and only then the washbasin.

Important! Water may remain in the siphon after turning off the water, so place a bucket or basin before removing the siphon to avoid staining the walls and floor.

  • Remove the pedestal and disassemble the plumbing underneath.

Video material

The “tulip” sink has a number of advantages, including an elegant appearance, practical design, durability and strength. Installing a “tulip” washbasin with your own hands does not require professional knowledge during installation and dismantling. You can easily choose the size and style to suit your bathroom design

There are several options for classifying shells of this type. The following characteristics can be used as a basis.

According to the way the sink is positioned

  • Regular. The most common modification of the tulip sink, which is installed against the wall. A wide range of similar models allows you to choose an option that is ideal for any bathroom.
  • Angular. As is clear from the name itself, these structures are designed for installation in the corner of the room. Such plumbing fixtures, usually having small dimensions, allow rational use of usable space, ideal for arranging miniature bathrooms. More ideas on choosing a small sink we.

Corner models have an ergonomic design.

An ergonomic model of a corner washbasin with a pedestal, additionally equipped with functional cabinets, which allows optimal use of the usable space of the room

A corner washbasin cannot be installed structurally along a wall, while a straight model can easily be placed in a corner, fixed along one of the walls.

According to the design features of the models

Based on the characteristic design features, three main groups of washbasins can be distinguished:

  • monolith;
  • compact;
  • half tulip

Monolithic models are a complete structure in which the sink is inextricably connected to the leg. Such options are quite rare in the consumer market: they are difficult to manufacture, which also affects the cost of such products.

Much more often on sale you can find washbasins of the “compact” type, consisting of two components: a sink bowl and a support column.

The advantages of these models include affordable price, practicality and ease of use. If, if the siphon is clogged, the monolithic model will have to be moved as a whole, then to eliminate this problem with a compact model, you just need to move the pedestal.

Modifications with a leg that does not reach the floor are called “half-tulip”. They have a more modest appearance, but have certain advantages.

Advantages of the third type of model:

  • such products can be mounted at the desired height, which provides additional comfort during their operation;
  • a half-tulip sink installed in the bathroom greatly facilitates cleaning the room, since the floor underneath remains completely free;
  • the half-column, like a full-fledged pedestal, covers all communications well;
  • This option is well suited for hanging plumbing fixtures, but in this case additional installation is required to firmly fix the model.

A washbasin with a half-pedestal will look great in a compact bathroom; it is also often used when decorating service spaces in offices or enterprises.

According to the material of manufacture

The material from which sinks are made affects the decorative and functional qualities of the models, as well as their cost.

Designer version of a porcelain tulip sink. This product can become a real decoration for a luxurious bathroom.

The most common options include the following:

  • Faience. A common and affordable material that is often used to produce plumbing fixtures. Despite the budget price of earthenware tulip sinks, they have good performance properties, are quite strong and durable.
  • Porcelain. A fairly expensive option is often used for the manufacture of designer models. Porcelain products that shine through in the sun have an exquisite, noble appearance, but in terms of consumer qualities they are close to earthenware structures.
  • Acrylic. An artificial material with many useful qualities. Acrylic structures have a budget cost and are fairly light in weight; they are hygienic and impact resistant. In addition, this plastic can be easily processed (grinded, engraved) and painted, which allows you to create the most incredible versions of tulip shells. Disadvantages include some fragility (the material is easily scratched) and flammability.
  • Stone. A strong and durable material that can be used to create impressive washbasin options. Most often, granite and marble or more affordable artificial stone are used for this. In addition to the high cost, the main disadvantage of such models is their heavy weight: it not only makes manipulation difficult, but also puts a large load on the floor. We recommend that you familiarize yourself with stone sinks in more detail.

In addition to the options listed above, there are tulip sinks made of glass, various types of plastics and other materials.

In addition, tulip shells vary in size. Typical options are models with bowl sizes of 50-70 cm, however, miniature and large-sized modifications are also available.

Pros and cons of tulip sinks

Washbasins with a pedestal have a large number of important advantages:

  • Large range of models. There are various modifications on sale that differ not only in design features, but also in design, color, and size. Thanks to this, you can always choose an option suitable for interiors of different stylistic orientations.
  • Affordable price. The cost of a “tulip” mainly depends on the material from which it is made. However, other things being equal, the price for a washbasin of this type is slightly lower than for other models (for example, “Moidodyr”).
  • Compact design. Even conventional modifications have relatively small dimensions, which allows them to be installed in fairly compact spaces. In addition, there are miniature models - corner tulip sinks and options with a semi-pedestal. At the same time, even small-sized structures can effectively hide service communications (water supply and sewer systems) from view.

The tulip sink is practically free of flaws. Some inconvenience can be considered the inability to use the space under the washbasin (for example, under bedside tables).

However, there are models that provide additional cabinets and shelves that are attached to the column.

Compared to other types of plumbing fixtures, the installation work of a washbasin with a pedestal is quite easy. It is only important to attach the bowl to the wall, as well as correctly assemble the mixer and siphon. All this can be done with your own hands without the involvement of specialists.

You should also take into account the features of models made from different types of materials (porcelain structures are fragile, stone structures are heavy, and so on).

When choosing a model, it is important to pay attention to the following factors:

  • Height of the support column. Its length should be such that a person does not have to bend over much when washing. The typical size is 70-80 cm; if it doesn’t fit, it’s better to look for another model or settle on a tulip sink with a half-pedestal. In another article, we looked in detail at sink installation height standards.
  • The size and depth of the bowl. The optimal option is a sink with a width of 55-65 cm. A large modification will take up a lot of space, and from a smaller version, splashes will scatter to the sides during washing. It is also not very convenient to wash from a very shallow bowl; it is better to choose a deeper sink. We talked about the size of the sink in more detail in this material.
  • Holes for mixer. Depending on your preferences, you can choose a model that provides one modern mixer or separate axle-box taps for hot and cold water.
  • Presence of overflow. This function allows you to avoid flooding in the bathroom if the outlet is clogged. You just need to remember that overflow requires a special siphon and an additional non-standard pipe.
  • Accessories. Since pedestal sinks typically do not include a drain fixture, you will likely have to purchase one specially. It is better to immediately select a tulip sink, siphon and faucet manufactured by the same company.
  • Correspondence of the size of the washbasin to service communications. If a tulip sink is purchased to be installed in the bathroom after a major renovation with the replacement of water and sewer pipes, absolutely any option will do. When choosing a vanity to replace your previous plumbing, it is important that it matches the remaining plumbing systems.

Before going to the store, it is advisable to measure and record the distance from the floor to the water supply pipes and other communication parameters.

Unfortunately, the discrepancy between the pins provided on the model and the existing wiring is very difficult, and often impossible, to correct. In this case, it is better to return the unsuitable model back to the store.

Before installing a tulip sink, it is important to carefully study the diagram of a specific model, which may have different sizes and design features.

After purchasing, do not forget to check the availability of all parts of the kit, and only then proceed with the installation of the washbasin.

Detailed instructions for installing a tulip sink

For plumbing work you will need the following tools and materials:

  • roulette;
  • hammer drill;
  • level for leveling the bowl;
  • hammer;
  • adjustable wrench;
  • drills for concrete and tiles (if there are ceramic tiles);
  • dowels for fastening;
  • adhesive sealant;
  • soft pencil/marker.

To create airtight connections you will need tow or fum tape.

The following selection of photos will help you briefly familiarize yourself with the sequence of work on installing a tulip-type sink:

Image gallery Photos from Step 1: Marking the position of the sink on the wall Step 2: Marking points for installing the brackets Step 3: Drilling holes for the holders Step 5: Screwing the brackets into the dowels Step 5: Fixing the sink bowl on the brackets Step 6: Installing and connecting the faucet Step 7: Connecting the device to the sewer Installation of the supporting and decorative leg

Stage #1 – dismantling the old washbasin

First of all, you should disassemble and remove the old plumbing fixtures. To do this you need:

  1. Shut off the main water supply.
  2. Unscrew the nuts on the mixer and disconnect the flexible or rigid connection, and then remove the mixer.
  3. Go to the drain: unscrew the nuts on the siphon and remove it.
  4. Remove the old washbasin from its mountings, making room for the new one.

After this, you should check or re-prepare all communication lines: cold and hot water outlets, sewerage. Their location should match the holes on the newly purchased plumbing fixtures.

After this, you can begin the main stage of work.

Stage #2 - installation of stopcocks and bowl

Installation of the “tulip” is carried out in several stages.

The best place to start is by installing shut-off valves. For insulation and connection strength, it is advisable to wrap “fum” tape or tow mixed with a small amount of oil paint on their threaded part, which guarantees improved protection against water leakage.

After this, we proceed directly to the installation of the plumbing kit.

Leveling the bowl is a very important step in installing a pedestal vanity. After this, also using a level, marks are made to place the brackets on which the upper part of the structure will be suspended

To determine the fastening locations, we place a support column on which we place the bowl without fixing it. It is important to level the structure using a level, and then use a pencil or marker to mark on the wall where the sink will be attached.

Using an electric drill, we drill holes according to the marks, the diameter and depth of which correspond to the dowels prepared in advance. If the wall is decorated with ceramic tiles, drilling must be done very carefully using a special drill.

Using a hammer, we insert dowels into the holes, into which we carefully and thoroughly screw the brackets. It is important to ensure that their position is strictly perpendicular to the wall.

To attach the sink to the wall, you need to drill holes for the dowels with a drill. They are equipped with brackets on which the bowl is hung

We hang the washbasin bowl, while tightening the nuts through plastic or rubber gaskets.

We have more detailed step-by-step instructions on our website for attaching a sink to a wall.

Stage #3 – connecting to communications

After that, you need to take care of communications. We plug the drain hole with a return corrugated hose, which prevents water from flowing. Then, without securing it, insert a metal drain cylinder into the hole.

We connect the washbasin to the wiring. In this case, the main drain must be secured with gaskets on the outer and inner sides. Only after this is the connection tightened, but in no case is it tightened in order to avoid mechanical damage to the bowl.

We install the mixer. It is important to take into account that the diameter of its part immersed in the sink must correspond to the size of the “tulip” hole intended for this purpose. We recommend viewing detailed instructions for installing a faucet on a sink.

Correct installation of shut-off valves allows you to regulate the correct operation of the mixer when opening and closing the valve using an angle clamp on the rod

We install shut-off valves. We take into account that when the rod is pulled out of the mixer, the valve closes, whereas when the rod is inserted all the way, it is open. The opening and closing of the valve is adjusted using an angle clamp on the rod.

At the ends of the flexible water hoses there are nuts with which the mixer is connected to cold and hot water. We check the operation of the system by inspecting the structure for leaks.

Stage #4 – installation of the pedestal column

We cover the communications with a hollow support column, performing the work as carefully as possible so as not to accidentally damage the pedestal.

Installation of a hollow pedestal that reliably covers all communication systems (sewage, cold and hot water supply), and also ensures the strength and reliability of the structure

All seams are treated with sealant in the color of the wall, plumbing fixtures or transparent colorless. After this, the installation of the tulip sink can be considered complete.

The final stage of work: filling the joints with a colorless sealant, which prevents water from entering cracks and gaps, guaranteeing improved waterproofing

It should be noted that in some cases it is more advisable to first connect the mixer, and only then install the bowl on the brackets.

In addition, depending on the connected communications, it is sometimes better to replace the corrugated hose with siphons of a different type (specific information is usually available in the instructions for the purchased plumbing fixtures). We recommend considering the types of siphons for washbasins, their pros and cons, and recommendations for selection.

Features of installing a sink with a semi-pedestal

Installation of the compact model of this modification is carried out similarly to a regular tulip sink, but has some features:

  1. First of all, you should correctly select the optimal height for attaching the bowl. The standard parameter is 75-80 cm, but it is better to take into account the convenience of using the washstand.
  2. According to the instructions above, holes are drilled in the wall, dowels are inserted and the brackets on which the bowl is suspended are secured.
  3. After this, the standard procedure for connecting the mixer and siphon to the communication systems is performed.
  4. Additionally, markings are made for fastening the semi-pedestal; You also need to make holes in the lower part of the structure, hammer in dowels and secure this part so that it covers the pipes.

The difference in installing a half-tulip lies in the last point, since the sink leg, which does not reach the floor, cannot provide the structure with the necessary strength and stability.

To install an attractive “half-tulip” model, which will fit perfectly into a small bathroom, you need to attach not only the bowl, but also the truncated leg to the wall

Typical mistakes when installing a structure

In order not to disrupt the performance of the equipment during installation, we will consider what mistakes you should be wary of.

The defects that are often encountered when installing a tulip sink yourself include the following defects:

  • Sink tilt. If you mark the wall and install fasteners without checking the level, the bowl may not be hung level. A sink skewed to one side, of course, will not decorate the bathroom too much. Correcting this defect is quite difficult: you will have to re-dismantle all the parts and drill the holes again, carefully checking with a level.
  • The gap between the bowl and the wall. The edge of the washbasin should fit snugly against the wall or partition. If there is even a small free space between them, water will constantly flow into it, which sooner or later will affect the safety of the wall. To avoid this, after installing the structure, you need to carefully seal all cracks and gaps.
  • Plumbing or sewer leak. A water or sewer leak can have serious consequences, including flooding of an apartment (yours or your neighbors’). Most often it happens due to poorly tightened threaded connections. After performing such operations, you need to check the connections by giving water under high pressure.
  • "Moving" of the shell. The reason for the instability of the bowl of a tulip sink can be loose bolts or an uneven floor under the pedestal. In the first case, the problem can be solved quite easily: you just need to check and secure all the connections of the parts. Things are somewhat more complicated if a second reason is identified.

You can temporarily correct the situation by placing suitable gaskets under the washbasin leg (preferably silicone ones that do not stick out from under the structure).

For large uneven areas, it is better to level the floor using a cement mixture.

There are other installation instructions on our website that cover the process of installing a pedestal sink.

Tulip shell and its choice

The Tulip sink with a beautiful name consists of two elements: a pedestal and the washbasin itself. The pedestal is necessary in order to support the sink and take on the entire load. The pedestal also has an aesthetic function: it hides sewer pipes, a siphon and other not very beautiful details. A tulip will make the bathroom more compact and give the interior some prestige and respectability. Also, due to its aesthetic qualities, such a sink will highlight any layout in a favorable light.

When choosing a Tulip sink, you need to focus on the size of the room, that is, your bathroom. It is also necessary to take into account the location of sewer pipes and other plumbing equipment. You also need to take into account the distance to the sewer pipe supply from the floor level and the width of the pedestal itself.

In some cases, you will also have to buy drain fittings; as a rule, they are not included in the kit. It is very good if the equipment has an “overflow” system. This will protect you from emergency situations and minimize the risk of flooding your neighbors below.

If the plan includes a major overhaul, in which you will completely change the pipeline, channels, connections, and so on, then there is no significant difference - just buy the option you like best. But don’t forget, before making a purchase, measure all the distances so that the Tulip sink fits your size and looks uncluttered in the restroom.

Installing a Tulip washbasin

The design is simple and does not include complex elements. Therefore, installing a tulip sink in the bathroom will not be difficult; it does not require any special professional knowledge or skills. Let's describe everything in order.

First of all, we need to prepare the tools that we will need. These are a screwdriver, keys, a drill, and if you have a drill, a hammer, plugs, a level and a dowel.

After everything you need is ready, we proceed to marking the place where we will make holes in the wall. Please note that they must fit neatly into the holes in the pedestal. Using the holes made, fasteners for the tulip sink will be made.

After this, we attach the siphon to the rack with bolts. A mesh with a special gasket is attached to the underside of the siphon. In this case, it is necessary to achieve a high degree of tightness.

The next step is to install the tulip bowl itself, which is done on the coupling bolts. And then we mount the pedestal in the center of the bowl. Don't forget about the siphon hose outlet. This corrugated hose is routed into the drain pipe using a special technique.

After the bowl and pedestal are installed, we proceed to fixing the entire structure to the wall. Fixation and final fastening is carried out using washers and bolts.

To achieve the tightest possible connection between the Tulip sink and the wall, and also to minimize the possibility of leaks, you can treat all joints with transparent silicone sealant.

And the final stage of installation is connecting the mixer to the sewer pipe system. If you follow these instructions and do everything correctly, installation will not take you much time.

Pedestal sinks are quite popular and are present in the collections of almost all sanitary ware manufacturers. Such models fit perfectly into any interior style, thanks to their thoughtful design and design, they have an aesthetic appearance, are stable and functional. In addition to the classic tulip shells, there are many non-standard options that are particularly decorative. Even a novice craftsman can install such a sink; the main thing is to follow the instructions exactly.

Tulip sinks got their name because of the design features - a wide bowl is located on a narrow vertical support - a leg, like a flower. The support is hollow inside, which allows you to completely hide the siphon and water supply hoses, which do not look very attractive in plain sight. In addition, the leg takes the main load from the sink, increasing the stability of the washbasin.

The main advantages of pedestal sinks:

The only disadvantage is that the pedestal does not allow full use of the space under the washbasin. Small items can still be placed at the foot, but a laundry basket or washing machine will not fit under the sink. So if there is not enough space in the bathroom for such things, then it is better to choose a sink with a cabinet or a wall-hung one.

Types of pedestal sinks

Depending on the design, tulip shells are divided into three types:

  • classic version, consisting of a pedestal and a bowl. Both elements are mounted alternately, with the bowl attached to the wall, and the pedestal installed without additional fasteners. Such models are considered the most convenient: individual parts of the washbasin are easier to secure than a solid structure, and if the siphon is clogged, it is enough to move the leg to the side;

    Tulip sink - consists of two parts: a bowl and a stand (pedestal), in which the water supply and sewage pipes are hidden

  • monolithic products. They are produced in limited quantities, most often to order, due to the complexity of production. These washbasins have an original design and look impressive, but they are more difficult to install. The structure is heavy and can break if accidentally hit; it is better to carry out installation with an assistant;
  • half-tulip sink. These models have a short pedestal that is attached flush to the wall. Since there is no emphasis on the floor, and the entire load falls on the walls, installation is carried out only on a strong foundation - concrete or brick. Installation is not much more difficult than standard tulip sinks, but if there is a blockage, you will have to unscrew the fasteners to get to the siphon. The advantage of such models is that there is free space under the pedestal that can be used at your discretion.

Based on the installation method, sinks are divided into regular and corner, with only the bowl having a corner shape for better fit to the walls. The pedestal does not fit into the corner itself, so its shape remains the same as that of conventional models mounted against a flat wall. All three types of sinks described above can be made into corner sinks.

Washbasins also differ in the material they are made from. The most popular are sinks made of ceramics, earthenware, and porcelain. They are hygienic, easy to clean from dirt and plaque, retain their original appearance for a long time and are the most affordable, which is also important. True, these materials should be protected from impacts - chips and cracks easily appear on the surface.

The second most popular are products made from artificial stone. They are more expensive, but they are much more decorative than ceramic ones, and also have excellent performance characteristics. The casting method allows you to produce products of the most non-standard shapes with imitation of natural stone of various types. The material lends itself well to restoration and polishing, so such sinks can retain their magnificent appearance for years.

Glass, metal, natural stone and even wood are also used to make tulip shells. Models made from these materials belong to elite plumbing fixtures, so they are distinguished by their original design and very high price.

Standard washbasins with a pedestal have a width of 45 to 70 cm, small corner ones are only about 30 cm, and sinks with additional side surfaces are from 80 to 90 cm. The total height of the structures is usually 80-90 cm, while the height of the pedestal itself is on average equals 60 cm. Fastening is carried out using studs or anchors that are screwed into the walls.

Installing a tulip sink

To install a washbasin on a pedestal, first of all you need to prepare everything you need:

  • bubble level;
  • drill and drill bits for concrete and tiles;
  • wrench or adjustable wrench;
  • expansion dowels and mounting screws;
  • plastic gaskets;
  • FUM tape;
  • marker;
  • silicone sealant.

Preparation for installation

Before installing the washbasin, it is necessary to check and prepare the wall, floor and communication terminals. You cannot attach the sink to the wall if the lining is not held firmly, there are cracks or voids under the tiles. So, first, lightly tap the tile with a hammer: where the sound is dull, there is no glue under the cladding, which means you should not install fasteners in this place. Peeled and cracked tiles must be replaced with a whole one, empty seams must be filled with grout. If you leave everything as is, dust and moisture will accumulate in cracks and seams, and over time mold will appear. It will not be possible to carry out regular cleaning there, because everything will be covered by the body of the washbasin.

A level is applied to the floor where the pedestal is installed, checking the horizontalness and evenness of the base. If there are slight differences in height, you will have to additionally use silicone pads to prevent the washbasin from wobbling. The floor tiles are also inspected for damage, and seams are repaired if necessary.

Plumbing connections must be brought to the installation site in advance. If you are replacing an old sink, you should check the integrity of the stopcocks, the tightness of connections with pipes, and replace rusted parts with new ones.

Installation of a pedestal sink

Step 1. Unpack the sink and pedestal and check the contents.

Step 2. Set the washbasin aside, take a drill and make holes for the pins. To drill ceramic tiles, you will need a spear-shaped drill with a pobedit tip, and for further penetration into the wall it is replaced with a regular drill for concrete. The depth of the hole should be 5-10 mm greater than the length of the dowel, but the diameter, on the contrary, should be a couple of millimeters smaller.

Step 3. Dowels are driven into the holes until they stop, screws are inserted, plastic gaskets are put on top and the sink is hung. Holding it in the desired position, carefully tighten the screws on both sides, but not completely. Place a level on top of the bowl and check the horizontal position. If the sink is skewed, adjust its position by tightening the screws on the desired side.

The drain pipe is connected to the sewer pipe. After this, turn on the water supply and check the tightness of the connections. Detected leaks should be repaired immediately: tighten the nuts further and coat the joints with silicone.

Step 6. If everything is functioning normally, you can install the pedestal. The sink is raised a little, a pedestal is slipped under it and leveled. The siphon body together with flexible hoses should easily fit into the support cavity.

Step 7 Place the level on the sink again and tighten the mounting screws to secure the bowl tightly to the wall. The pedestal must remain motionless.

Finally, seal the joint between the sink and the wall with silicone sealant.

Installation of a sink with a semi-pedestal

When choosing a model with a semi-pedestal, be sure to take into account the dimensions of the siphon. If the sink leg is too short or not deep enough, the siphon body simply will not fit in it and will not allow the structure to be pulled to the wall. Another important condition is the location of the plumbing outlets: the drain outlet socket must be at a height of at least 50 cm from the floor level, and the water supply pipes are walled up in the wall.

First, the sink is attached to the wall in the manner described above. Next, connect the mixer and siphon, check the water supply and drainage, and the tightness of the connections. The semi-pedestal comes with special fastening elements: metal plates with eyes, two hooks with holes, bolts and nuts. The plates are put on the studs under the sink, the hooks are screwed to them, and then the half-pedestal is put on these hooks. The structure is leveled and carefully bolted up and towards the wall.
