Platband is an essential decorative element of any door. You will learn the rules and secrets of its installation.

The platband on the interior door is designed to perform an exclusively aesthetic function, closing the space between the walls and the door frame. A properly installed design helps hide any defects that may appear during door installation, and also gives the doorway a finished look. Be sure to read: .

Fastening the platbands is not a difficult job, but it requires precision from the performer and the right approach to the choice of material and installation nuances.

Trimming the corner of the platband

A miter box (a special groove with slots that help determine the angle) can also be a good assistant in precise cutting.

Even if you have all the necessary tools at hand, cutting the platband without basic knowledge of geometry will be quite difficult. The sequence of actions should take place in the following order:

  1. The length of the door is measured on the platband and, using a building level, a perpendicular line is drawn. The second perpendicular line is drawn parallel, at a distance of the width of the upper casing. As a result, an exact rectangle is formed on the platband.
  2. A diagonal is drawn in the resulting rectangle, dividing it into two triangles. The main thing is not to make a mistake and draw the diagonal in the right direction. Its beginning should be in the upper corner of the door and go to the ceiling. The same principle is used to mark the second vertical platband. The horizontal casing will differ from the vertical ones only in the undercuts on both sides.
  3. Trimming begins strictly along the drawn lines. If the work is carried out with a jigsaw, then it is advisable that the cut be made in one approach. When using a hacksaw, you should choose an option with a fine tooth to avoid chipping the decorative coating.

Types of platbands and their installation

Platbands can be classified into several groups according to the type of material from which they are made:

  • Tree. The advantage of wooden platbands is their environmental friendliness and durability, as well as the ability to buy them with a carved pattern;
  • MDF. An economical option, but with good characteristics. Such platbands are practical and durable, they are less susceptible to deformation from moisture;
  • Plastic or PVC. Plastic structures are most often used in rooms with high humidity. They are easy to care for and durable in use. It is possible to lay wiring inside the casing;

Installation of the platband always starts from the side in which the door opens. This is explained by the fact that due to the door hinges, installing the platband at the same level as the door frame is problematic. Mostly, but always, because you can use .

The platband here is installed with a slight indentation, on both sides of the door, so that the structure looks symmetrical.

On the reverse side of the door frame, the structure is installed without any indentations.

To secure elements, experts recommend using only nails. Copper-plated fasteners can be an excellent option, since their caps, darkened over time, will be almost invisible against the background of the platbands. In cases where the structure is light, the caps are removed with wire cutters or galvanized nails are used.

Liquid nails are only applicable on perfectly flat wall surfaces, and if dismantling is necessary, the structure will simply have to be broken.

Plastic platbands are most often glued. They do not require a perfectly leveled wall surface, and their affordable cost makes it easy to part with them when dismantling. In addition, they are so plastic that they themselves can perfectly lie on some irregularities, hiding them.

Laminated trims differ little from wooden ones, but their installation requires a special approach. Using nails right away in this case is risky - the material may be damaged. To begin with, holes for nails are drilled in the laminated trims, and only then can you begin fastening.

Installation of platbands always begins with the side and top element of the interior door. The second side panel is attached last.

Helpful hints

At the initial stage, it is advisable to simply attach the planks with a couple of nails without hammering them in completely. One nail is driven in at the base, the second - closer to the middle of the plank. The horizontal strip is attached using the same principle, but nails are driven into it along the edges.

Having installed the entire three platbands in this way, you can proceed to adjusting their location by lightly tapping the sides with a hammer. If there are gaps between the planks, carefully pulling out one nail can reinstall the plank more tightly.

Once the adjustments are completed, the capital fastening of the entire structure can begin. The choice of pitch of fastening nails should be guided by the level of load when operating interior doors. If the door experiences increased loads, the fastening step is on average from 15 to 20 centimeters. If the door is rarely used, the step can reach half a meter.

Before starting work with platbands, you should take measurements of all doorways in the house, and then begin installation with the largest of them. With this approach, if any of the actions turn out to be incorrect and the slats are cut to the wrong size, then the remaining slats from a large opening can always be adjusted to the size of a small interior door.

In cases where the joining of the platbands, despite all the efforts, did not go perfectly and small gaps still remain, the solution will be to purchase a wax pencil for the interior door. Finding it is not difficult; it is sold in any hardware store. Wax pencils are sold in a wide range of colors, so you can choose the one you need. It rubs in easily, removing traces of chips and hiding the heads of furniture nails.

Compliance with technological techniques and a careful approach to each stage of installing platbands on interior doors will certainly lead to a result that will delight you for many years.

A decorative strip is used to update and decorate interior doors. Interior platbands carry several functional loads as a frame. It’s easy to install platbands with your own hands; you just need to decide on the installation method.

Functions of the door trim element

Door frames on interior openings are a completely familiar decorative element for us.

Wooden profiled platbands

At its core, the platband is a decorative overlay that serves as a frame for the door structure. The main function of the part is to cover the gap at the junction between the wall surface and the box of the interior or entrance block.

The presence of this element is quite familiar and understandable, but the decorative component, which is often attributed to the lining, also carries a number of other functional loads:

  • Cashing on the door covers the shortcomings of the installation work on installing the door frame.
  • Platbands for interior doors significantly increase the sound insulation performance of adjacent rooms.
  • The decorative strip prevents dust from penetrating into the adjacent room.
  • Finishing doors with platbands is guaranteed to isolate the room from drafts.

Structural finishing of the opening

The only function of the door frame in the form of giving the doorway aesthetics is accompanied by a number of useful additions. Due to this, the installation of the platband completes the complex of complete isolation of the adjacent room in the building.

Previously, platbands in the form of carved openwork strips framed window and door openings of country-type buildings. Today, the fashion for handicrafts by masterful architects is returning, which can be seen in many modern buildings.

Carved platbands on a modern log house

Of course, if in the old days everyone could afford to install carved overlays, since virtually everyone possessed, many even primitive, skill. Nowadays, not everyone can afford to decorate a building with an openwork frame.

MDF trim material

Door trim in its modern form is a plastic, metal or wooden lining, finished with various types of material or painted. Elements for framing openings can also be created from composite materials. The types, forms of decorative elements and how to select them for the design are all described in previous articles, so there is no need to dwell on this now. After all, our main task is to talk about the various ways to install cash.

Therefore, before starting work, you need to decide on the method of how to attach the platbands. There are several fastening options: using special glue, screws, self-tapping screws or ordinary nails.

Platbands can be attached in several ways

Platbands have two main functions:

  1. After installation, conceal the gap formed between the door frame and the wall.
  2. Additional, giving a finished look and allowing you to tie the doors to the main decor of the room.

Modern industry produces platbands of various shapes and designs, and there is a huge selection of materials for their manufacture. It can be plastic, veneer or MDF. You must choose platbands that match the texture of the door leaf, the desired width and color to match the door. It is also important that the current market for platbands offers simple and carved, figured and rounded ones. Your choice will play a role in the final decoration of the door.

A person who is installing doors himself for the first time needs to know that when purchasing, he must check the package contents. Many sellers announce the price of the box and the canvas, already implying that you will have to buy the platbands separately. Therefore, this issue needs to be discussed, immediately selecting the necessary colors and widths.

Platbands should be selected immediately when purchasing doors

Typically, standard trims have the following parameters: width - 7 cm, height -210 cm, thickness - 1 cm. You need to know that 6 strips will be required for a double-leaf door, and 5 pieces for a single-leaf door. If you need to frame an opening, you can get by with two and a half slats.

Proper assembly will allow you to hide the fasteners and give the structure a finished look. If the work is done carelessly, unsightly cracks and gaps may remain and your doors will look untidy.

If you need to save money on renovations, try making the trim yourself at home. To find out how to make a platband with your own hands, you need to read the relevant literature. It will also be important to have at least a little experience in handling them.

List of tools required for woodworking:

  • sawmill where you can make blanks;
  • a jointer that allows you to create right angles;
  • thicknesser to give the workpiece the required thickness;
  • electric;
  • vertical router for cutting out designs: you can get by by making the trim simple;
  • pencil, ruler, square.

Correct selection of material

An important factor is. You should only take boards that are well dried, otherwise you risk having clumsy trim after a while. Tap the board with your finger: a dry board makes a ringing sound. Focus your attention on color: the board should have a uniform color scheme and no knots. Firstly, such cashing out does not have a very aesthetic appearance; secondly, there is a risk that it will break in this very place.

Manufacturing process

If you have stocked up on the necessary tools and building materials, then you can begin the process. First you need to make the required measurements in order to. Then you should first carry out rough grinding, and then process it with fine-grained sandpaper. Cover with a protective layer.

How to attach

One of the most widely used methods is fastening using nails. For this purpose, nails with a flat small head, which fit 1.5–2 cm into the box, are suitable. It is recommended to place the nails approximately 50 cm apart.

A simple and quick way to attach a platband is to use liquid nails. Everything here is extremely simple: it is applied and pressed against the wall.

You can use self-tapping screws 2–2.5 cm long and 6 mm in diameter. To ensure that the cap is not very noticeable, the screws are “recessed” a little into the wood.

You can use special fasteners for platbands - “beaks”; they are easy to use, but are not suitable for products made from MDF.

Fastening process

  • Place the trim along the height of the opening to measure the required length. Then put it on and mark a right angle. Cut off the excess.
  • Align the trim with the finished corner along the edges and bottom. Mark a height equal to the inside corner of the door frame.
  • Using a protractor, measure an angle of 45 degrees from the selected mark and mark it. The excess is cut off and can be put aside for a while.
  • Precisely following the order, we make the casing for the parallel side in the same way.

Back in the days of the inimitable Coco Chanel (using the example of her famous jackets), the world learned that well-chosen piping can turn a boring thing into an example of sophistication and style. This technique is still used not only by clothing creators, but also by interior designers. You've noticed how carefully experts select baguettes, baseboards and, of course, door frames. If you haven’t yet conquered the magic of transforming door panels with the help of platbands, be sure to read this article to the end.

What are door trims

Door trims are strips that frame the door leaf. Initially, they are designed to hide the technological gap between the door frame and the wall, as well as soften the transition between them. But also in terms of design, platbands play a very important role, often emphasizing important features of the chosen interior style.

Photo gallery: platbands in different interior styles

In Baroque, platbands, like other interior elements, must be works of art Advocates of the contemporary style strive for simplicity, but should not give up the modest crown Loft welcomes dark frames of simple shape, but light milling will not be superfluous Platbands can serve as one of the main components of the ceremonial atmosphere of the room Thanks to simple smooth trims to match the walls and doors, the panels seem hidden

Modern trims can be complemented by decorative corner elements and crowns, which replace the standard top strip. This decor is usually used in a palace or classical style and looks especially impressive in white.

When choosing a suitable product, you should pay attention to:

  • strip width. It should be wide enough to completely cover the gap between the frame and the wall, especially if the gap is uneven. The maximum width is taken into account only if the door is located very close to the corner of the room; in such cases, it is worth taking a narrow frame;
  • material. Traditionally, the same one as at the door is selected and provided by manufacturers in the same collection, but if desired, you can deviate from the rules. The main thing is not to select a plastic or other cheap platband for an expensive door. Even if it looks more impressive when new, after a couple of years the difference in the wear resistance of the materials will be noticeable;
  • installation method. If you plan to install the platbands yourself, choose lightweight models that can be glued or telescopic platbands. Experienced craftsmen can handle any type;
  • design. Smooth trims will suit any interior, but they are too boring to highlight the room. You can correct the situation with a non-standard color or choose an option with a more interesting profile.

I, like many others, have always been afraid of frames of non-standard colors and even limited my bold fantasies on the topic of door edging to white, black, or, in extreme cases, silver. But after one of the construction projects, I decided to paint the trims bright turquoise, linking them at the same time with the ceiling molding. It’s amazing how much more interesting and brighter the white and purple bathroom has become after such an upgrade, and guests are always terribly surprised. At the same time, reactions are usually positive even among hardcore classics lovers. It seems to me that this happened because the trims and baguettes are of medium width (the turquoise is dosed) and they are tied together with towels (it looks more harmonious this way). I have been enjoying this effect for more than a year and have never regretted this decision. So if you also have wooden trim at home, you can cover the perimeter with masking tape and radically transform them without even removing them. The worst thing you risk is having to repaint them back.

Types of door frames

If the length of the casing is limited by the dimensions of the door, then the width, texture and material can be almost any. In modern interior design, it is not even necessary that the color of the door leaf and trims match, the main thing is that the latter combine well with the baseboards.

The tandem of plinth and trim, used in contrast to the door leaf, looks very impressive and unusual

Classification by type of materials

On sale you can find:

  • wooden door frames are the most standard and familiar material. They are usually made from spliced solid wood to prevent the possibility of the plank twisting or cracking. Among the advantages: safety for health, exact match in tone and texture with wooden doors, low cost, variety of patterns, possibility of self-repair and repainting. The disadvantages are familiar to everyone - sensitivity to humidity and temperature changes, the likelihood of chips and dents upon impact. Total: wooden trims are ideal in combination with a wooden door when installed in a room with a stable microclimate;

    In a completely wooden interior, only the same platbands are appropriate

    Wooden trim will help give a more status-conscious look to an MDF door; you just need to tint the wood in a similar shade.

  • plastic trims made of polyurethane (PU) or polyvinyl chloride (PVC) are usually installed on doors made of the same material. This kit is not afraid of moisture, prevents the spread of mold, can be equipped with cable channels for laying wires, and can have a variety of color variations. Disadvantages include a modest appearance, sensitivity to elevated temperatures and ultraviolet radiation, low resistance to scratches and the possibility of releasing harmful substances when heated. Ideally, plastic platbands should be used together with entrance doors, so they will show their best qualities to the maximum;

    Plastic trim with patterns may look very nice in the picture, but their actual appearance is usually disappointing. Therefore, if you like any option, try to find it in a construction hypermarket and attach it to doors similar to yours. This way you can clearly see how they fit together.

    Due to the honeycomb structure of plastic trims, they should not be installed in places with a high risk of impact.

  • MDF/HDF is a traditional option for MDF doors. They are light and easy to install, optimally match the shade and texture of the canvas, and are often decorated in the same style. One of the main disadvantages is the peeling of the decorative coating in the places of cuts, which reduces the shelf life of the product. The most economical are frames made of MDF with a film coating, while the best are considered to be products made of HDF, veneered with natural wood. Now this is one of the most popular types of platbands, which is due to the popularity of MDF doors;

    Modern methods of imitation wood are so convincing that mounted MDF trims are often difficult to distinguish from wooden ones

  • gypsum door frames are used only in rooms where there is already a lot of ceiling and wall stucco. Surrounded by such decor, wooden and especially MDF trim would seem too alien. Gypsum products are very beautiful, they can be made seamless, are easy to order in an individual design and are easy to tint in any color. But do not forget about the disadvantages: installation can only be entrusted to a specialist, installation is impossible after wallpapering, the material crumbles from impacts, and restoration requires appropriate skills;

    Gypsum portals are often equipped with beautiful corner elements

  • Ceramic door frames are produced specifically for bathrooms, lavatories and swimming pools by ceramic tile manufacturers. In such an environment, they look most harmonious and appropriate, and their service life is no less than that of the rest of the cladding. In such conditions, platbands made from other materials deteriorate much faster and often introduce dissonance into the design. At the same time, do not forget that ceramic trims are more expensive than regular ones, their length is always less than the width of the door and they also weigh a lot. The installation of planks can only be entrusted to an experienced tiler, since a beginner simply will not be able to lay long narrow strips evenly. But if durability is a priority, then ceramic trims will suit you better than others;

    What has been said about ceramic platbands can be repeated in relation to products made from natural or artificial stone. Their scope of use is limited, but if executed correctly, this solution looks very impressive.

    Manufacturers made sure that ceramic platbands could be used to frame the arched opening

  • Aluminum trims are a logical addition for doors in aluminum profiles, usually glass, with or without a layout. Thanks to the variety of shapes and shades, such stripes look great not only in offices, but also in modern interiors, especially eclectic ones. Gold and bronze models look very impressive.

    Aluminum trims combine perfectly with the texture of art concrete

In addition to those indicated, there are also coated metal trims, but they are usually sold complete with the front door and are not used in other places.

Differences in profile shape

When choosing a frame for a door, most consumers pay attention to the texture of the front side of the strip. Depending on this parameter, the following types of platbands are distinguished:

  • straight, smooth - in cross-section they look like a rectangle with slightly rounded corners and have no bulges on the front part. This is a popular option that, due to its neutrality, fits into any interior. But it looks best in modern minimalism and contemporary. At the top, such planks are most often joined at right angles, but if desired, they can be sawed at 45 degrees. They are the easiest to produce, therefore they are inexpensive and are often made with different coatings;

    In an interior with an abundance of precise straight lines, smooth platbands look better than others

  • radius - when looking at the end, they resemble a semi-arch, but from other sides this rounding is not too noticeable. Such models require a little more care when joining corners and are always sawed at 45°; a joint at a right angle turns out to be ugly. Radius planks are made from all the materials described above and are available in most popular shades, including wood textures. Otherwise, they are quite neutral and fit well with all interior styles;

    Radius trims (middle) have a more interesting shape than flat (left) and milled (right), but they are more difficult to fit in corners

  • milled are planks with longitudinal strips of different widths, reminiscent in style of ceiling baguettes. They are more decorative than radius ones, but due to their wide distribution they do not produce much effect. It is precisely these trims that are installed with wooden doors, so when installing economical door panels, you can use this stereotype;

    Even a slight difference in the thickness of the strip makes the platband more decorative

  • carved - most often found in classical and palace interiors, but with their help you can make a modern interior or a romantic nursery more elegant. Elite versions of door frames are made of wood and decorated with intricate images of flowers, leaves, and sometimes animals. But since such decor is not available to everyone, there are MDF analogues on sale. They have a simpler and less deep relief, but you can choose decent options from them;

    Only equally luxurious platbands with exclusive carvings are suitable for a luxurious door.

  • arched - unlike straight planks, they are designed to frame semicircular openings. Their size is always clearly tied to the radius/diameter of the arch, so they are not so universal. If you want to make an arch at home with such a spectacular frame, there is a reason to first buy a platband and adjust the opening taking into account its size.

    Today you can make beautiful platbands for arches of any shape to order

Photos of antique patterned window casings, so popular lately, have not escaped me either. Looking through these masterpieces by ancient masters, I was inspired to decorate my daughter's nursery door. But since there were no woodcarvers in the family and surroundings, I had to be cunning. With the help of a friend, I created a drawing of the desired pattern and ordered the plywood to be cut using a CNC machine, then I painted it myself and emphasized the curves with a pearl patina. The result, of course, is far from a copy, but as a stylization it looks very good. I didn’t remove the existing trim, I just glued patterned ones around the perimeter and a fairy-tale portal emerged. So, I advise everyone whose carpentry skills can’t keep up with their imagination not to be content with purchased platbands, but to boldly put their crazy hands to work on them. Indeed, in the worst case, you will simply end up with a slightly unpleasant, but still useful experience.

Modern analogues of carved platbands look, although more modest than traditional ones, but just as charming

Mounting methods

Until recently, there was only one way to securely fasten the platband - nail it through with small nails. Due to the absence of a cap, they are almost invisible on light-colored products, but dark ones had to be puttied and the tinting adjusted (of course, if it was necessary to achieve an ideal look) or get rid of blemishes using furniture wax. This method is suitable for wooden frames, but it is absurd to use it with plastic ones.

The advantage of fastening with nails is the additional strength of the structure, since the nails go deep into the frame

Therefore, telescopic, or L-shaped (in cross-section), platbands are now popular. They have a special tenon that snaps into a groove prepared for it in the door frame. There are no visible fasteners left on the surface; when re-gluing wallpaper, such a casing can be easily removed and then snapped back on. But it can only be used in conjunction with special boxes. Such kits are made for doors made of MDF and plastic; they cannot be used with wooden panels.

Telescopic trims snap into a special groove on the door frame; no additional fasteners are required

Some manufacturers also offer mounting clips, which are fixed to the wall with one side and hold the trim on the other. Depending on the material of the slats, plastic or metal clips are selected.

If you do not have experience with such fasteners, ask the seller for advice or provide instructions on paper, which is usually included in the package

The last popular method of attaching platbands is an adhesive connection. Heavy stone and ceramic strips are mounted with tile adhesive, and liquid nails are sufficient to hold lightweight products made of polyurethane foam.

When using an adhesive connection, it is worth temporarily securing the platband with clamps

Manufacturing of door frames

Before you decide to make something, you should familiarize yourself with ready-made analogues that are offered by the industry or made by experienced craftsmen. In the case of platbands, you should pay attention to the width. It cannot be less than 4 cm, since the minimum technological gap between the frame and the wall is 3 cm. The maximum is limited only by aesthetic considerations - for a narrow door there is no point in choosing a very wide edging, since it will look disproportionate (like a too broad-shouldered jacket on a teenager ). On the other hand, if the other doors in the same room with a wide frame look good, it is better to choose the same edging for all panels. Manufacturers usually offer platbands with a width of 7 to 11 cm; other sizes are already considered non-standard, therefore they are rare and more expensive.

It is easier to give a complex profile to a wide platband than to a narrow one

When the assortment of platbands or their prices is not satisfactory, or you simply want to add a homemade twist to your home, the craftsman is faced with the question of choosing a material. MDF, metal and ceramics are no longer needed, since something worthy of attention can only be made from them in a factory environment. But you can experiment with wood or plywood at home, because almost every home craftsman now has a jigsaw for cutting, and if you want, it’s easy to rent one or borrow one from friends. And rulers, sandpaper and pencils will definitely be found in any household. It’s even easier to experiment with gypsum - when working with this material, you can generally do without special tools; a couple of homemade devices will be enough.

We make smooth platbands from wood

For experiments, you need to take well-dried boards from a solid or jointed (if you paint) array of available species. Without the skills, you shouldn’t even take on oak; a beginner’s lot is pine, spruce, and birch.

To make the simplest platbands you should:

  1. Cut planks of the required width from the boards using a jigsaw.

    When cutting with a jigsaw, it is convenient to navigate along continuous markings or use a side stop

  2. Sand the planks with sandpaper by hand or with a sander.

    For a better result, you need to repeat sanding with sandpaper of varying degrees of grit.

  3. Round the corners to prevent cracking of the wood using sandpaper or a hand router.

    If after processing with a router there is a noticeable step left, it can be removed with sandpaper

The procedure is simple, but when taking into account the prices of wooden platbands, it is not always advisable. Typically, you should make such products yourself only when you need wide planks that are not commercially available.

Do-it-yourself textured plaster cashing

For those who have never worked with plaster, the technology for making long, narrow strips may seem complicated, but if desired, almost any beginner can master it. Just keep in mind that this work is dirty and will require a separate room.

Let's get started:

  1. Figure out what your trim will look like in cross-section or copy a picture from the Internet. Print or draw it in the desired size.

    You can take the industrial version as a basis and adjust it to your needs

  2. Find a piece of thick plastic and cut a recess in it that matches the shape of the future casing. If you have the tools and skills, such a scraper can be made from tin.

    It is better to choose the size of the scraper so that it is convenient for you to hold it

  3. To make it easier to keep the scraper at a constant right angle to the surface, you can make a frame for it.

    The main secret of the device lies in the selected quarter, which helps to guide the hand at the same distance from the edge of the table

  4. Cover the work surface with film to prevent the plaster from sticking to it. It is convenient to work on a sheet of laminated plywood or an old kitchen table; there is no need to cover their smooth surface. Place a strip of medical bandage or a special reinforcing mesh made of thin thread on the prepared surface and secure it along the edges with double-sided tape.

    A wide casing can be reinforced with two or three strips

  5. Mix the plaster with water and a small amount of PVA glue to a thin paste and pour it onto the work surface along the long edge. For orientation, you can mark the border with masking tape or pull a thread.

    In one or two times you will be able to select the optimal amount of plaster so that the remains do not dry out while working on the product

  6. Cover the liquid strip with a piece of medical bandage; it is needed for additional reinforcement of the product.

    If the strip is slightly wrinkled or skewed, this will not have much effect on the result.

  7. Cover the strip of plaster with another layer and begin removing the excess with a scraper. At the end point, it is better to substitute a tray into which the leftovers will be dumped. You need to make several passes to get the texture clean. Keep in mind that plaster expands slightly as it dries.

    It is advisable to use the scraper in the same direction each time.

  8. If shells remain on the strip, add a little fresh liquid solution to the dried plaster and go through the scraper a few more times. To obtain a smooth surface, you must first moisten the scraper. At the end, you need to trim the ends of the product with a spatula.

    The final pass will result in a smooth, uniform surface.

In this way, you can make other moldings for the interior: baguettes, moldings, baseboards. Remember that before use the product must be dried for 1-2 days depending on its thickness.

Manufacturing of patterned additional elements

If simple straight strips are not worthy of your doors, you can experiment with carved ones. The advantage is that you can create your own pattern and a completely exclusive product. But you will have to spend a lot of time and work with more or less soft material. Not everyone can cut out a quality pattern in a thick wooden board, so beginners turn their attention to plywood and extruded polystyrene foam. The first guarantees the environmental friendliness of the platbands, but the second will help achieve a more expressive relief due to its thickness. After cutting and installation, both materials will need to be coated with a protective agent - water-based paint or stain and varnish (suitable only for plywood).

But the manufacturing technology is similar:

  1. Find or come up with your own report (a fragment of a pattern that will be repeated along the entire length of the casing), draw it on paper and cut it out. When making a drawing, you need to be careful; if necessary, use auxiliary tools. For example, it is convenient to draw curls using lids of different sizes. Remember that a pattern that is too thin will create difficulties for you when cutting and subsequent installation.

    When working with long narrow strips, it is more convenient to use fiberglass in a spool than sheet material

If you plan to attach the trim with glue, you should paint them before installation. When using nails, it is better to apply the finishing coat of paint after attaching the trim to the wall. This method is best suited for making crowns over the door, since with this arrangement the patterned decor is minimally damaged and lasts longer.

Installation of door frames

The main secret to high-quality installation of door frames is to use the rule “measure seven times, cut once” in time. After all, in the corners the planks should fit together beautifully and not leave gaps. For beginners, it will be easiest to work with smooth, straight platbands, since they won’t have to monitor the joining of the pattern.

When using corner elements at joints, places for trimming can be selected during rough assembly

In addition, the on-site measurement method is best suited for novice craftsmen. That is, there is no need to measure the height of the door, mark it on the strip and then cut it off. It’s better to try placing the bar in the right place and marking the correct height on it. It is best to do this with an assistant or temporarily attach the strips with double-sided tape to roughly fold all three elements and check how they fit together.

The exact position of the straight cut of the plank can be found by placing all the elements of the platbands in place

If you are planning a joint at an angle of 90°, you need to secure the two verticals correctly and attach the horizontal part as a ruler. This way the mark will be at the correct height - the height of the box plus the width of the strip. Then it is easy to determine the length of the horizontal bar, for which it is enough to attach the edge to the left post and mark the place of intersection with the right one. When marking, keep in mind that the cutting blade has its own thickness, so as not to end up with a gap.

To obtain an accurate 45 degree cut, you need to construct a square diagonal from the lower left corner to the upper right

Docking at 45° is usually done using a miter box, but if you’re not used to it, it will hinder more than help. Therefore, it is also worth using the visual method. Assemble the edging as in the previous case, but now pay attention to the diagonal of the square obtained by overlapping two planks. To begin with, you can make marks on the top and trim it, and then simply draw lines on the vertical slats like a stencil. This way you can quickly join the platbands and the cut corner will definitely point in the right direction.

When the trims are cut correctly, all that remains is to snap them into the grooves, glue, nail or secure them in any other way convenient for you.

How to eliminate gaps after installing doors and give them an aesthetic appearance? For these purposes, specialists use platbands. Their main function is to hide defects and cracks that appeared during installation. Installing interior door frames is a responsible process that requires experience and dexterity from the master.

What are the types of platbands?

The construction market is represented by a wide range of overhead strips. They differ in:

  • functions performed: constructive, decorative;
  • color scheme;
  • shape: flat, rounded, curly;
  • texture: simple planks, carved frames made according to templates;
  • sizes;
  • installation method: overhead, telescopic;
  • materials: wood, metal, aluminum.

Finishes should be selected based on personal preferences, as well as taking into account the features of the interior and the exact installation location. When purchasing platbands, it is important to choose the right material. Any type of raw material has its pros and cons.

Wooden

Ten years ago, this type was the only option for decorating a door. But, despite the improvements in the construction industry, it is still in demand today. The main advantage is versatility: wooden planks are suitable for any type of door structure.

They may differ from others in their appearance. Depending on the taste of the consumer, the decor can be carved, with figures of various shapes.

The disadvantage of wooden door frames is the need to update them. But this is not a reason to refuse them. Modern platbands are made in such a way that they can be restored, puttied, and painted without any problems.

MDF

Most people compare this material with fiberboard. On the one hand, they are similar in properties. On the other hand, the latest technologies are used in the production of MDF, providing higher quality materials.

MDF trims are suitable for installation outside wet areas

MDF is a medium density fiberboard. In terms of environmental friendliness, it is the same as wood. And veneered MDF is even difficult to distinguish from it externally.

Overlay strips made of MDF are preferred due to their low cost and durability. But when choosing, you must take into account that it has poor moisture resistance. Therefore, it is not recommended to install it in rooms such as a bathtub or toilet.

Plastic

Such planks are made of durable plastic, which is not subject to changes under the influence of climatic factors. During operation, they do not fade or melt. In addition, they do not require special care. Wet cleaning once a week is all that is required of you.

Plastic platbands are highly moisture resistant

Due to its low price and good resistance to moisture, plastic finishing has found a wide range of consumers. However, there are negative points.

The disadvantage of this decor is the small selection of models, as well as colors. Typically sold in white and several shades of brown. Platbands of other colors are made to order.

Methods for cutting platbands

The appearance of the cash depends on how carefully the craftsman cuts the components of the structure. You can cut using several methods using:

  • electric miter saw;
  • miter boxes, hacksaws.

To make the cut as smooth as possible, without chips or roughness, experts recommend using a professional electric saw. In this case, the device must be in good working order. If the saw blade is crooked, dull, or there is even a slight runout of the bearing, the result will be far from the desired one.

Using a professional saw you can get a perfectly even cut

However, you need to know that even high-tech equipment from well-known brands allows for small errors. There are certain tolerances for them: the cut angle is 0.3-0.7 degrees, the joint inaccuracy is from 0.1 to 0.5 mm.

Those who refuse to buy an electric saw can use a factory miter box. It is a tray made of metal, plastic or wood. With this tool, products are cut at different angles: 90, 45, 30 degrees.

Home craftsmen most often use a miter box

For overlay strips made of different materials, select the appropriate hacksaw. Metal and plastic frames are cut with a hacksaw for metal, wooden frames with a hacksaw for wood. The quality of the job done depends on the right tool.

Methods of fastening platbands

Installation is carried out using finishing, liquid nails, self-tapping screws, and “beaks”.

Using finishing nails

This type of fastener is widely used due to a number of advantages:

  • stealth;
  • ease of installation;
  • no experience required.

For work, use thin nails about 4 centimeters long and up to 1.5 millimeters in diameter. The distance between them should be 50 cm. Points are marked on the slats with a simple pencil.

After fixing, the nails can be puttied to match the color of the wood, so that the nails will not be visible

At the marks, nails are driven in so that they fit 20 mm into the box. If the caps are narrow, then they can be left or, if desired, trimmed with side cutters. The resulting small depressions are masked with a wax pencil of a suitable color.

The disadvantages of working with finishing nails are:

  1. Difficult to dismantle. Due to the peculiar structure of the head, it is almost impossible to get nails.
  2. Less strong connection than regular nails.
  3. When choosing this fastening method, also keep in mind that such nails are intended for finishing where there is no bending load.

Liquid nails

This method is ideal for MDF framing. It is performed quite simply and does not require specific skills or dexterity.

Liquid nails are used to install MDF trims

Liquid nails are applied to the underside of the decorative element and attached to the wall. For the glue to set, you need to hold it for a few minutes and then secure with tape.

This type of fastening is good because it leaves no marks on the outside of the slats. However, the fastening strength is not as high as when using conventional nails.

Fastening with self-tapping screws

This method is characterized by reliability. It is used for wooden products.

Wooden trims are secured with self-tapping screws

Even a beginner in construction can handle a self-tapping screw. To do this you just need to follow the instructions:

  1. Find self-tapping screws with a diameter of 6 millimeters and a length of 2 centimeters.
  2. Place marks on the front side of the planks 50 cm wide from each other.
  3. Drill small holes in the marked places, and then drill them out a little. This will hide the screw heads.
  4. Screw in the screws. If desired, they can be disguised under putty or decorative overlays.

Fastening with beaks

“Beak” is the name given to the casing, which in appearance resembles the Russian letter “G”.

This method is very simple. It consists in placing the largest section of the part in a recess specially designed for this purpose and snapping it into place.

The disadvantage of fastening with “beaks” is the gradual delamination of the structural element. Under the influence of the fastening itself, the planks begin to collapse at the joints. As a result, there is a need for additional fastening with glue.

Docking methods

There are 3 mounting methods.

Docking at an angle of 45˚

During installation, it is impossible to do without trimming the areas where the individual parts of the kit are connected. Trimming at an angle of 45˚ is most often used. It is ideal for any type of finishing, successfully hiding areas of cuts.

Joining at an angle of 45˚ hides areas of cuts

The platbands are connected at an angle of 90 degrees. The top trim board is placed between the right and left sides.

Docking at 90˚ with imitation jumper

This installation method is used to create an unusual interior design.

Installation instructions for wooden trims

You can finish the door not only with the help of a master, but also with your own hands. To avoid mistakes, strictly follow the algorithm.

Stage 1. Preparatory work.

Using a construction knife, clean the surface of the doorway from protruding polyurethane foam. Then walk with an even strip along its entire perimeter, look at the position of the wall and the box. Existing problems will be resolved during installation of the frame.

Step 2: Mark the location of the trim strips.

Overlay strips are installed in such a way that the rounded corners of the door frame remain visible.

Platband installation

And the straight lines from the side of the extension should coincide with the corners of the decorative element.

Pay special attention to ensure that the platbands do not interfere with the operation of the hinges and the door lock screwdriver. Attach the strips and use a pencil to make marks above the box above the joint angle at a distance of approximately 3 mm. The marked places show the height of the vertical and width of the horizontal decorative elements at the lower connecting corners.

Sometimes during installation, the extensions receive numerous damages. To hide them, experts advise placing marks on the door elements two millimeters below the corner. If there are no defects, then install the planks flush with them.

Stage 3. Attach vertical strips to the marks and place marks on them at the desired height.

After measuring the platbands, number them and put the numbers on the wall in the appropriate place. This will prevent them from being mixed up during the work process.

Step 4. Trim the vertical parts of the structure at an angle of 45˚.

The cut should be smooth, without chips. When cutting, consider the width of the cut, as in some tools it can be up to 3 mm. Therefore, make an appropriate indent from the label.

Vertical planks are trimmed taking into account the width of the cut

Step 5. Attach vertical and then horizontal elements.

The vertical strips are fixed first, and then the horizontal ones.

Installation instructions for plastic trims

To make your own plastic trim, strictly follow the diagram:

The fittings make the joints look beautiful, so there is no need to use sealant to close the gaps.

Aligning the plane of the platband with the wall

Our builders do not always adhere to standards, so many shortcomings appear. One of the most common are curved walls. What to do when the wall and the box are not parallel to each other?

If the error is very small, then solving the problem is easy. To do this you need:

  • Press the decorative strip against the box and measure the size of the gap that appears between it and the wall. If it is no more than 3 mm, then the deficiency can be eliminated without special construction work.
  • Find a narrow lining. It should be the same thickness as the gap. Place it on the workbench of a saw or miter box. The lining will lift one side of the casing during cutting.
  • Press the overlay strip as tightly as possible to the work table, cut the end at an angle of 45 degrees and with a slight slope in relation to the surface. This way the joint of the overlay strips will be sealed and no sealant will be needed to fill the gaps.

The situation is worse if there is a large error between the wall and the door frame. Then you will have to eliminate it in one of the following ways:

  • Disassemble the wall, make a niche for the frame if the frame is deeper than the surface of the wall. To do this, attach the overhead strips to the box and draw lines along them along the wall. Then, using a grinder, cut through this line and make grooves around the entire perimeter of the door. Constantly check their depth. If the niche turns out to be deeper than necessary, seal it with cement mortar.
  • Correct the defect using a plane if the purchased wood planks are too thick.

Installing finishing is a troublesome task, but you can sacrifice anything to create home comfort.
