PVC pipes have already thoroughly and firmly entered our lives, more and more displacing the metal pipes we are used to. The result of this is that polyvinyl chloride pipes do not corrode, are not afraid of water, frost and, despite their high strength, are nevertheless easily cut and bent to give the desired shape.

In addition to using PVC pipes in plumbing, they are often used to make various crafts.

To bend a pipe, pipe bending machines are usually used, but their prices are relatively high (from 3000 to several tens of thousands), and then - why do you need a machine if you do not set yourself the goal of doing this all the time?

As mentioned above, PVC pipes bend easily and you can give them the desired shape simply by hand, using only simple devices and tools, namely:

metal container;

cutting tool (scissors or knife);

protective gloves;

sandpaper;

gas/electric stove;

construction hairdryer

In some cases, for example, to bend a pipe in several directions, you will need to make a simple device (template) for bending pipes, which is a slab of thick plywood or fiberboard with wooden pins inserted into it (you can use nails or self-tapping screws).

In order for the pipe to bend evenly, without wrinkles, it needs to be heated evenly. Sand is used for this. Measure out the required amount of sand in advance by pouring it into the pipe, after sealing one end of the pipe with tape. As practice shows, for a 3-meter pipe with a diameter of 20 mm of sand you will need about one bucket.

Then pour the sand from the pipe into a prepared metal container, heat the sand to a temperature of 80-100 degrees...

...and pour it back into the pipe again. Seal the filling hole with tape to prevent sand from spilling out of the pipe during operation. Attention: Remember that the pipe will heat up, so do not forget to wear protective gloves!

Place the pipe on a flat surface so that it heats evenly. For a pipe with a diameter of 16-20 mm, this will take from 2 to 4 minutes.

Then place the pipe in the prepared template and carefully bend it centimeter by centimeter in the desired directions. Do not hurry! The result of careless work can be uneven deflections and even ruptures of the pipe along the outer diameter. In both cases, the marriage cannot be corrected. When finished, leave the pipe in the template until it cools. After removing the pipe from the template, it will keep the shape that you gave it.

If there is a long amount of work ahead, there is a risk that the sand will have time to cool before the work is completed. To prevent this from happening, just in case, keep a hair dryer on hand to locally warm up the section of pipe being treated from time to time.

In principle, you can do without heating the sand on the stove at all, using only a hairdryer, but in this case the work will be unnecessarily delayed and, in addition, if handled carelessly, you can overheat the pipe and it will simply “float”. And this, again, is an irreparable defect.

In addition to the described method, there are other ways to bend PVC pipes using other devices, for example, so-called spring conductors. They come in two types: internal, when the conductor is inserted inside the pipe, and external, where the pipe is inserted inside the conductor.

Polypropylene pipes are the most common material that is often used when installing a heating system. A polypropylene pipe can withstand high-temperature coolants and can withstand pressure of several atmospheres inside the pipeline.

The disadvantage of PPR pipes is that they are sold straight, and to create systems of complex configurations, a pipe with a certain bend is often needed, which has to be done manually.

However, experienced repairmen often resort to bending pipes, and this does not cause problems with deformation or loss of strength.

Let's say in apartment buildings, where each room has a separate riser and one radiator, the system is very simple. One pipe goes from the riser to the radiator, the second - back. Things are different in a private house, where heating has to be installed from scratch, starting from the boiler and pipes from the basement to the top, to all rooms. Sometimes it is difficult in this case to build a straight-line system that will be devoid of turns and changes in the height of laying pipes. It is possible to install two different pipes at all bend points, connected by a special coupling, but this is labor-intensive, costly and less efficient.

Another large area of ​​application for bent polypropylene pipes is the underfloor heating system. The fact is that in this case the pipes are laid according to a pre-planned pattern, reminiscent in shape of a tubular electric heater of a washing machine or a “coil” in the bathroom.

PVC pipes are increasingly used as a source material for the manufacture of various crafts and crafts. Sometimes craftsmen give them an ornate curved shape and the final work after applying the finishing coating does not even resemble the original material. Materials
To bend a PVC pipe you will need:
the pipe itself;
durable tape;
sand;
funnel;
metal container;
gas or electric stove;
protective gloves;
knife or scissors;
saw or hacksaw, as well as sandpaper.
In addition, you will need a pipe bending device. In this case, a piece of plywood with dowels set into the thickness was used.
Step 1. Usually, a gas torch is used to bend pipes, but with its help you can give the pipe only a slight bend and only in a small area.
It is difficult to process significant sections of such material in this way. This takes a lot of time, and besides, the pipes are often bent during work, which does not look aesthetically pleasing.
To bend a pipe, as you see in the photo of the final work, it requires uniform heating from the inside. For this difficult operation we use sand. So, first of all, you need to cut a piece of the required length from the PVC pipe and clean the edges of the cut.
Step 2. One end of the pipe must be sealed with tape. The tape should completely cover the hole.
Using a funnel, you need to pour sand into the pipe. Take enough of it so that the pipe is completely filled with it.
After measuring the required volume of sand, pour it into a metal bowl and warm it well. The sand should become hot.
Wear protective gloves on your hands. Using the same funnel, pour the prepared sand back into the pipe.
Cover the other end of the pipe with tape. This is necessary so that the sand does not spill out during work.
Leave the pipe like this for a couple of minutes. During this time it will warm up from the inside. The material will become soft and pliable.
While the sand is still hot, you can give the cut piece of pipe the bend or shape you need. After this, remove the tape and pour the sand back.
Once completely cooled, the pipe will hold the shape you gave it.

This attachment can be used to thermoform plastics up to approximately 1/8 inch thick. This way it bends well polystyrene, polycarbonate and PVC.

The base of the entire device will be an MDF board, its size is unlimited, what size you need to bend, choose that size. An aluminum “U” shaped profile is well suited for the heat shield of the heating element; it can be bought at any hardware store, suitable size 10*10mm, 10*8mm. We screw the profile along the edge of the base sheet with self-tapping screws.

For the heating element itself, we need nichrome wire with a diameter of 0.2 to 1 mm.

Using the table “Calculation of nichrome wire for a heater”, you can see the maximum amperage for heating the existing wire diameter to the required temperature of 400-600 degrees.

We stretch the wire inside the profile; to adjust the height and direction, we use bolts with a head for a flat-head screwdriver. The wire should not touch the plastic workpiece, the distance depends on the size of your profile and can be 1-3 mm. To constantly tension the heated nichrome, we install a fairly stiff spring, for example from a printer.

For ease of use of the device, you can also install a switch, a connector for connecting a battery or power supply. It is very convenient to use a powerful adjustable power supply to smoothly regulate the incandescence (heating) of the wire. For example, this one: Adjustable power supply 4000W AC 220V adjustable 10-220V.

How to work: Place a sheet of material along the fold line over the hot wire and turn on the power. We hold it motionless until we notice that the bend has softened and begun to bend itself. We quickly move the workpiece onto a flat table and bend it to the angle we need, hold it like this until it cools.

Many people wonder how they can bend PVC plastic pipes themselves. Indeed, in the process of installing heating and water supply systems, you very often have to deal with deformation of pipes, but many, not knowing how to do this, acquire a lot of unnecessary components, with the help of which they create bends and branches of the channel. Safer ways to create any bend and direction of the pipe intended for supplying water are:

1. You can bend a plastic pipe using a technical hair dryer. To ensure the proper shape of the PVC pipe when it is heated, so that it does not begin the melting process, it is necessary to pour into its internal cavity a material that is resistant to elevated temperatures, and whose structure has the form of finely ground fractions. Such materials include both sand mass and salt mass. Using a construction watering can or funnel, pouring such materials inside a polyvinyl chloride pipe will not be difficult. Naturally, one end will need to be sealed with a stopper or barrier cap. Approximately, to fill a standard (length about 3 meters and diameter about 2 cm) plastic pipe intended for creating a heating system or water supply channel, you will need about one bucket of bulk material. Knowing all the calculations, you can purchase everything you need in advance and not worry about whether the available materials are enough or not.


2. Plastic pipe can be bent without the help of a technical hair dryer. This method involves heating bulk material (sand mass or salt mass) using an oven. To realize your plan, you will need a baking sheet and a preheated oven. After the bulk mass has warmed up to the desired temperature, using a scoop and a construction funnel, it is necessary to pour it into the internal cavity of the plastic pipe. It must be taken into account that when choosing this method of bending a PVC pipe, you need to have a crow and a metal barrier cap.

An important nuance is determining the required temperature, sufficient for bending plastic pipes, as well as polyvinyl chloride pipes yourself. In this case, you need to think logically. This issue can be considered using the example of a water heating tank. So, the tank heats the water, according to the recommendations in the instructions for the product, to a maximum of 75 degrees Celsius, but it is advisable to adjust the mode and set the heating temperature to 60 degrees. This is necessary in order to avoid the formation of precipitation on the walls of the tank during heating at high temperatures.
