Planting plants in hanging pots

Nowadays, you can buy a ready-made hanging flower pot, planted with flowers, but doing it yourself is much more interesting, and it’s not difficult.

Let us consider sequentially the actions that need to be taken for this. So:

1. If the basket is solid, this greatly simplifies your task. Need to cover with shards or fine mesh drainage holes and fill the basket with compost, preferably peat-based. After this, we proceed directly to planting plants (see point 6). If you have chosen a lattice basket, then the first thing you need to do is prepare it for work, i.e. make sure that the basket does not tip over, and it is convenient for you to fill it. To do this, you can put it in a bucket or large pot.

2. We line the inside of the basket with either a ready-made purchased liner (they can be made of foam plastic, cardboard, or natural fibers), or with sphagnum moss (it’s good to lay polyethylene on top of a 2-centimeter layer of moss), or you can make a liner from scrap material on one's own.

3. Fill the basket with moistened compost about halfway and compact it.

4. We make holes in the liner of our basket at the level of the compost surface. The number of holes is approximately three to five, depending on the size of the basket. We insert seedlings of cascading plants into the holes.

5. Add compost to the edge of the basket.

6. We plant upright flowerbed plants in the center of the basket, and flowing ones along the edges. We compact the compost around the roots so that there is a distance of about 2.5 cm between the compost and the edge of the basket.

7. Water the basket generously.

8. EVERYTHING! Our hanging planter is ready. We admire the results of our work.

It is important to remember that before taking the basket outside, it is advisable to let the plants take root. It's best to put it on sunny window or in a greenhouse for at least a week, and only then start hardening and take it outside.

And further! Hanging planters require constant care! If you are not a fan of this business, then you should think carefully before spending time on this. It is necessary to constantly ensure that the compost does not dry out, water it regularly (every day, sometimes 2 times), and feed it once every two weeks. You also need to regularly prune plants, preventing them from growing, removing wilted flowers. You can secure unruly shoots with hairpins.
