Specialized stores today offer a very wide range of smokehouses and barbecues. However, real connoisseurs of smoked meats often make their own smokehouse. Good smokehouses are quite expensive, but the quality of others leaves much to be desired. There are many options for homemade smokehouses that allow you to get tasty and aromatic hot or cold smoked products.

smokehouse from a cylinder

To create smokehouses, craftsmen use metal barrels, spare parts for refrigerators and old ovens, even washing machines - and they are used. A smokehouse made from a gas cylinder is deservedly popular. It is quite difficult to make such a structure with your own hands, but with the necessary preparation and attitude it is quite possible . The gas container has an ergonomic, convenient shape and metal of the required quality. Some craftsmen create products from a gas cylinder that can easily be transformed from a smokehouse to a grill or barbecue.

Any work begins with the preparation of the necessary materials and tools; making a smokehouse from a cylinder is no exception. Before we start creating a smokehouse, we will need to prepare:

  • Gas cylinder (a standard propane cylinder is considered the most suitable).
  • Metal sheets 4 mm thick. They will be needed when making a combined smokehouse grill from gas cylinders.
  • Metal corners.
  • Chimney pipe.
  • Several pipes of small diameter or cross-section, which will be needed when making a frame for a smokehouse.
  • Fittings (the door is attached to the smokehouse using hinges and rivets).
  • Lattice or metal rods for its manufacture.
  • Wooden blanks, from which the handle of the smokehouse will be made.

When doing chores on a personal or summer cottage, any owner uses his own tool; it is also suitable for making a smokehouse. When starting work, you will need to prepare in advance:

  • grinder;
  • electric drill;
  • hacksaw for metal;
  • welding machine.

The only thing that poses some difficulty is the welding machine; not every person has welding skills, but you can always turn to friends or hire a specialist. Work on making a smokehouse from a cylinder begins with checking the container and, if necessary, removing residual gas from it. The initial inspection of the workpiece is carried out at a safe distance from houses and open sources of fire. You can check the presence or absence of gas in the cylinder using soap foam. To do this, it will need to be applied to the outlet: if there is no reaction, then the container is empty, bubbling foam indicates that there is gas left in the container. You can remove remaining gas by cutting off the neck of the cylinder. For these purposes, a hacksaw is used. To prevent fire, water the cutting area and the hacksaw with water. After opening, the container must be rinsed with running water. In order to ensure that the walls of the workpiece are cleaned of possible gas residues, you can prepare a solution of ammonia, water and ammonia. After filling the smokehouse with the resulting liquid, leave it for several hours. You can also clean the workpiece for the smokehouse using another method. To do this, you will need to unscrew the valve and, after waiting for the propane to come out, attach a small diameter tube to the cylinder. It is needed to fill the bottle with water up to the very neck.

The small diameter of the hole will not allow water to quickly fill the container. You can speed up the procedure by drilling a hole in the container and using a funnel to pour water or solution through it. The neck of a container filled with water can be cut off without unnecessary fears. Further work with the workpiece for the smokehouse is carried out only after another additional rinsing with solution or water.

Important! Welding and cutting of containers without preliminary preventive maintenance is strictly prohibited. Do not forget that after releasing the gas, the cylinder must be rinsed at least twice.

Making a smokehouse. First steps

So, how to make a smokehouse from a gas cylinder? Let us immediately note that such a smokehouse is, by and large, a completed product, and the stage of creating diagrams, drawings and sketches can be safely omitted. The work begins by applying markings for the door to the surface of the workpiece; you need to step back from the edge by about 100 mm. To do this, it is better to use chalk or a construction marker, and it is better to lay the cylinder itself horizontally. Do not cut off the side rings from the cylinder; they will later be used as supports for the entire smokehouse.

Also, do not immediately cut the door along the marked lines. At this stage, it is enough for us to decide on the exact location of the hinges for the door. The door is finally cut out only after the hinges are fixed to the surface of the workpiece. To fasten the hinges, either bolts or welding are used, and the latter option is considered the most reliable.

In any case, the places where the hinges are applied and the base for the smokehouse from a gas cylinder will be installed must be prepared by cleaning them with a grinder or a metal brush. An elbow will need to be welded to the already cut neck of the cylinder - an outlet at an angle of 90 degrees. It is needed so that the chimney can be installed. You will also need to cut a hole on the other side of the smokehouse: smoke will flow through it into the smokehouse chamber. If you are creating a barbecue smokehouse where a separate combustion chamber is not provided, this hole will provide the necessary draft. By the way, if necessary, the draft can be increased; for this, several holes are additionally drilled in the side of the workpiece. The chimney can be made of ferrous metal, but there is a simpler option, although more expensive. You can visit a specialized store and purchase a chimney module made of corrosion-resistant steel. Such a pipe will cost slightly more than its black steel counterpart, but it will be much easier to work with. There are modules 0.5-1 meter long, which are easily assembled together.

Important! You can reduce the risk of deformation of the cut part of the gas cylinder by fixing and welding pre-prepared sheets of metal or tubes of small cross-section around its perimeter. By the way, a similar method allows you to increase the tightness of the smokehouse in the door area.

It is recommended to drill holes in the top of the smokehouse that will be used to attach a spit or a special pipe. Meat or small fish are hung on this pipe using hooks. In order to prevent fat flowing from the smoking product from collecting in the smoking chamber, it is recommended to install a metal sheet in its lower part. strong>Smoking fish and meat of substantial size occurs on a grate, also fixed in the smokehouse. You can buy a grille at a specialized store or make it yourself from metal rods.

Regardless of whether you are making a stationary or mobile smokehouse, the frame under it must be stable. There are several types of manufacturing and fastening of the base for the smokehouse. The mobile smokehouse has a removable base mounting option. For these purposes, holes for bolts are drilled in the lower part of the cylinder, and nuts are welded to the support posts on top. Another type of fixing the smokehouse on a stand involves short pieces of pipe (40-50 mm) welded to the smokehouse. They are fixed in the wider pipes of the frame.

The firebox for our smokehouse can be made from a similar cylinder of a smaller capacity or from sheet metal (thickness at least 0.4 cm). As a rule, a gas container is a way to save time and money. You will need to cut two holes with doors in the gas cylinder. One of them, the top one, will serve for laying sawdust. The second, lower one, will act as a blower. Between the blower and the firebox you will need to install a grate of the required size.

Important! Instead of a grate, you can use a stainless steel sheet of small thickness (4-5 mm). If sawdust is poured onto such a sheet and a fire is lit in the firebox, they will begin to smolder in any case.

The combustion chamber and smokehouse are connected through a pipe. Moreover, if you want to get a hot smoked product, the distance between the firebox and the smokehouse should be minimal; in order to get cold smoked meat or fish, the design will need to be slightly modified. To do this, a longer pipe is taken, and the distance between the smokehouse and the firebox increases; naturally, in this case the product will have to be smoked for a longer period of time. By assembling the frame, the combustion chamber and the smokehouse itself into a single structure, we will get a product that, at first glance, is completely ready for operation. However, there is no need to rush. There are just a couple of final details left:

smoking from a gas cylinder is a rather labor-intensive process

  • The smokehouse needs to be painted. This is necessary not only for decorative, but also for practical purposes. If a defect appears on the surface of the smokehouse, it will be much easier to detect it on the painted surface. By the way, to paint the product you should use heat-resistant enamel that can withstand temperatures of 600 degrees and above.
  • Before first use, the product will need to be burned dry. This is necessary in order to completely get rid of foreign odors and ensure the reliability of the smokehouse.
  • For smoking, use sawdust or small branches of shrubs and trees such as apple, alder, bird cherry, etc.

Summarizing

Creating a smokehouse from a gas cylinder is a rather labor-intensive process that must be approached responsibly. After all, the health of the entire family and friends will depend on the quality of the manufactured smokehouse. Do not forget that negligence when creating a smokehouse, especially the combustion chamber, can lead to a fire.

Nowadays, purchasing a smokehouse for fish and meat is not difficult at all - the market offers a wide range of products of various modifications. However, if you plan to spend a lot of money on an unplanned purchase, then you can easily construct a smokehouse from a regular gas cylinder. In such a device you can cook the most delicious dishes - loin, balyk, homemade sausage. In short, a wide variety of smoked meats, fish or poultry.

Peculiarities

To make their own smokehouse, home craftsmen use a variety of materials. Old ovens, barrels and even washing machines are used. The most popular units are made from oxygen, propane and freon gas cylinders. It is not easy to make such an installation, but with the necessary preparation it is quite possible. The cylinders are distinguished by suitable geometry and high quality metal.

If desired, you can make installations that can easily be transformed from a smokehouse to a grill, cauldron or barbecue and back.

The use of cylinders for smokehouse equipment is determined by the physical and technical parameters of the raw materials– cylinders, as a rule, are made of strong material with thick walls, which means that the device does not deform under the influence of high temperatures and will not lose its performance characteristics. Any gardener/fisherman or hunter, as well as a craftsman who regularly vacations outside the city, can make a smokehouse.

Before understanding the intricacies of manufacturing structures, let’s look a little at the features of the smoking process itself.

It is important to know them in order to make the installation correctly and achieve high quality cooking.

  • The product prepared for processing must receive heat and smoke in uniform portions, otherwise it will smell of hydrolysis and have a taste that is heterogeneous in its structure.
  • The smoke must certainly be light, that is, its fractions must precipitate even before they come into contact with the product. There are no pyrolysis gases in light smoke, which is why it gives a specific taste to homemade smoked meats.

  • The design must ensure the flow of working smoke in equal portions - it must fumigate the product from all sides until it completely evaporates, at which point new smoke must replace it.
  • It is very important to achieve compliance with all these standards; it is in them that the cornerstone of the science of smoking lies.

Smoking can be cold or hot; the design features largely depend on its type. The name itself indicates the operating principle of the smokehouse.

Hot food is produced in close proximity to the fire source. The temperature is maintained here at 40-120 degrees, it will take at least an hour to cook the meat, and the meat will be juicy, tasty and ready to eat right away.

With the cold smoking method, everything is a little different.– here the smokehouse is removed from the fire source, a pipe is connected from the firebox through which cooled smoke is sold directly to the smoking compartment and impregnates the product there. The temperature is maintained below 40 degrees, smoking takes quite a long time. The advantage of this method is the ability to store products for several months.

When choosing any of the two options, the smokehouse from the cylinder will have the same structure, but their parts will be mounted at different distances from each other.

Kinds

Gas cylinders are most often used to create combined fireplaces, which is why the smokehouse should be designed taking this factor into account.

Please note that when creating a multifunctional installation, one cylinder is not enough: At least two containers are used in the work, the first is used as a fryer, and the second goes to the steam generator. Experts recommend taking containers with a volume of 50 m3.

Every craftsman can make a home smokehouse from a gas cylinder, but some skills in working with metal will be required.

“In the field” conditions, you can make a structure from a variety of available materials. Homemade structures are characterized by small dimensions and light weight; most often they use a stainless steel sheet, which only needs to be welded along the edges with elements of the sidewalls and bottom, but the chimney is often equipped with brick and this can be a big mistake. Its walls absorb odors from various bricks, and after the first use, the taste of dishes can deteriorate significantly, so experts recommend using brick only as a base that supports the overall structure.

Other options are no less popular.

Smokehouse from nothing

This is the most affordable and easiest way to smoke at home. If the house has a gas or electric stove equipped with an exhaust hood, then you need to place a cut tin container on a small fire and pour wood chips into it for smoking. Hang pieces of meat or fish in the hood, and place a fat tray under them. Thus, the smoke will rise, envelop the product and promote its smoking. However, this option has significant drawbacks - the smoking procedure will be very long, and besides, you won’t be able to accumulate a lot of food this way.

From the refrigerator

Don’t rush to throw away your old refrigerator - its dimensions make it possible to use the item as a unit for smoking large products. For this purpose, it is necessary to remove all mechanisms from it and remove the lining. A pipe should be inserted into the hole located at the base of the refrigerator, and its opposite end should be placed in a container in which wood chips are burning.

This option is quite fast and effective. However, it can only be used in a country house or country house.

These are certainly the most primitive models. More complex and professional designs include the “steam locomotive” smokehouse - this unit not only smokes meat and fish, but also provides several different smoking modes, and after a little re-equipment can be used as a barbecue or barbecue grill.

The smokehouse for the cold method is made in such a way that the smoke along the path between the firebox and the tank for direct smoking is cooled and reaches the workpiece already cold. Such a device consists of a separate chamber where the product is placed, a firebox and a chimney. The principle of operation is as follows: sawdust is placed in the firebox; wood chips from linden, alder or fruit trees are best suited. It is not recommended to take shavings of coniferous trees; they have a high resin content, which can worsen the taste of the product.

The smoke moves under the influence of natural draft, cooling on the way to the compartment with the workpieces, and there the actual smoking of the product begins.

With hot smoking, the product is exposed to smoke at a temperature of 35 to 150 degrees, processing occurs much faster - about 2 hours. Gourmets prefer this method also because it does not remove moisture from the product and the dish comes out juicy and fatty. The structure itself is a completely enclosed space - a tank divided into compartments by a metal grid. In its lower part, wood chips burn and smoke, and in its upper part, products intended for processing are attached. The smoke covers the raw material and smoking occurs, and then the smoke comes out through the chimney. That is, the principle of operation of such a smokehouse is similar to the principle of a traditional stove.

Both smokehouses can be either stationary or portable. In the first case, the chimney is dug in the ground, and in the second, its role is played by a pipe that connects the smoke generator and the smokehouse itself.

Those who like to enjoy delicious meat while camping should think about creating a “camping” unit. For this you need: thick film, hooks and several wooden beams. To organize the work, you need to find a place with a slight slope of 60 degrees, install a frame in its upper part and cover it tightly with plastic film, and equip a place for a fire in the lower part, and then connect the fireplace to the equipped frame using “pipes.” Of course, few people carry them with them on a hike - it doesn’t matter; branches, polyethylene and turf are suitable as a temporary solution to problems.

And creating a smokehouse for hot smoking is even easier - you will need a bucket or pan, a grate and a lid. A fire is lit directly under the container, shavings are scattered along the bottom, and food is placed on the grate. The whole thing is covered with a lid, just don’t forget to leave a narrow gap to allow excess smoke to escape.

If you have no intention of tinkering with homemade mobile structures, then you can always buy them at any store for gardeners and gardeners. In addition, electric and gas models are widely available on sale: they are suitable for smoking at home and differ only in that heating is not due to fire, but due to current or gas.

However, more and more craftsmen prefer to create smokehouses on their own.

Advantages and disadvantages

The cylinder is good for setting up smokehouses, and the advantages of this are obvious:

  • wall thickness is 2.5 mm, the model has a compact size, which saves free space;
  • the smokehouse body is already ready, which will significantly reduce the cost of effort and time for making the smokehouse;
  • low cost - used cylinders are cheap and available to every consumer.

The disadvantages of the material are related to the fact that if the safety rules for operating such a smokehouse are not sufficiently observed, it can lead to tragedy - if the remaining gas is not completely removed, then an explosion is possible upon contact with fire.

Step-by-step manufacturing instructions

To make a smokehouse from a gas cylinder with your own hands, you need First, draw up a drawing of the planned model, and then adhere to the following scheme:

  • take a cylinder with a volume of 50 liters or more;
  • remove all gas from there, wash repeatedly with soapy water and leave for several days, then rinse thoroughly;
  • coat the top valve with soap foam - this will help you make sure that all remaining gas has completely evaporated;
  • draw markings on the walls of the container;

  • fix the hinges, sand all pointed areas;
  • attach the handles to the outside of the door using a grinder;
  • cut off the cover along the marking lines;
  • connect the cylinder with the doors;
  • install the stand and legs using available materials.

The main elements of the smokehouse are the firebox and the chimney - in their arrangement lies the main difference between the smokehouse for different smoking methods: cold and hot.

It makes sense to weld the firebox from steel sheets, or take a smaller-volume cylinder. It is connected to the cylinder through a hole on the other side of the valve. The length of the pipes depends on what kind of smoking you prefer - for hot smoking, the length of the pipes should be minimal, and for cold smoking it is better to remove the elements from each other by several meters. A car receiver is often used as a chimney.

The taste of home-smoked meat, lard or fish is much different from the taste of those products sold in stores or markets. After all, today’s smoked meat producers have long mastered an easier and less expensive technology for processing meat products - the so-called “liquid smoke”. The essence of the technology is simple: salted ready-made delicacies are dipped in smoke liquid for 2-3 minutes, and then dried in special cabinets.

It’s very easy to make real smoked meats at home by making a smokehouse from a gas cylinder with your own hands. In this article we will try to describe in detail the manufacturing process of the smoking unit, and for clarity we will add step-by-step instructions and several videos.

Usually, in the store, the labels of smoked products indicate how the product was prepared: hot or cold. To get a clear idea of their essence, take a look at the proposed drawings.

Scheme: comparison of hot and cold smoking technologies

With hot smoking, the products placed in the smokehouse reach condition much earlier than with cold smoking, due to the fact that they are exposed to high temperature and smoke. But the shelf life of products prepared by smoking this way is short and, as a rule, is 2-3 weeks.

When cold smoking, products in a smokehouse can be processed from 1 to 3 days. This ensures long-term preservation of meat or fish from 2 to 6 months. By the way, prunes, beloved by confectioners, are also prepared using cold smoking technology.

The design of a homemade smokehouse will depend on the technology you choose. As shown in the drawing, with cold technology the firebox is separated from the smoking tank by a long pipe (about 3-4 m). This is necessary so that the smoke has time to cool before reaching the food.

Preparatory work

Today, in many large hardware stores you can easily buy a ready-made smokehouse, but its cost is sometimes too high. It is much cheaper to make a smokehouse with your own hands from scrap materials, for example, as in our case from a gas cylinder. The quality of the products prepared in it will also be high.

Smokehouse made from gas cylinders

To make a smokehouse, as in the photo, you will need an AG-50 gas cylinder. Its capacity must be more than 50 liters.

Important! Do not use old, heavily rusted or damaged cylinders. A smokehouse made from them will not last long.

All preparatory work can be combined into three stages:

Attention! Do not neglect your personal safety - it is prohibited to cut or weld the cylinder without first cleaning it of gas residues and other substances. Carry out all work only after the gas has completely escaped.

Cutting out the smokehouse lid

Once completely cleaned, the cylinder becomes safe. Now it can be cut. Lay the can on its side and make chalk marks where the doors should be. Using a grinder, cut a hole in the cylinder, leaving only those places where the loops should be intact. Please note that the side parts (rings) must remain intact. You can speed up the process a little by using various metal cutters.

You can cut the balloon with a grinder

Now you should attach the hinges to the door. You can use any iron door hinges. Ordinary bolts are quite suitable for fastening them. But it will be safer to weld the hinges with a welding machine. After this, the door is finally cut out and all sharp edges are cleaned. Attach a handle to the outside of the door. For greater convenience, the handle is covered with fire-resistant, non-heating material. You can buy it at a hardware store.

Making legs or a stand for the smokehouse

As a rule, the height of the smokehouse rarely exceeds a standard kitchen table and is 85-100 cm. At the first stage, you should decide whether you will have a stationary smokehouse or one with a portable function. Both the stand and removable legs can be made from metal corners.

Attention! The weight of a smokehouse loaded with products is much greater than an empty one, therefore, in order to ensure the stability of the smokehouse, during the manufacture of the supporting structure, all parts must be properly secured and welded.

The easiest and fastest way is to make a stationary structure. To make it you will need 4 corners and a welding machine. Connect the corners perpendicular to the cylinder and weld them to the bottom of the smokehouse.

The smokehouse is installed on metal legs

Portable legs are made differently. Drill holes in the bottom of the cylinder and insert bolts into them so that the threads are outward. And weld nuts into the legs. If necessary, the legs are simply screwed to the cylinder.

The lower part of the legs, both in the first and second cases, for greater stability, must additionally be equipped with corners or metal supports.

Manufacturing of firebox and chimney

As we said above, the technology of cold and hot smoking is different, therefore the designs of smokehouses will be different. Let's look at step-by-step instructions for making a hot smokehouse. For a more visual representation, we suggest watching the video.

So, weld an iron elbow to the neck cut off with a grinder. Insert a chimney pipe into it. Create a damper at the top to regulate the amount of smoke. It is attached to the pipe with a bolt or made completely removable.

Cut a hole in the other side piece. Through it, smoke from the firebox will flow into the smokehouse. The combustion tank can be made from sheets of metal (4 mm) or a tank of slightly smaller dimensions. It is made with two holes for placing sawdust and for a blower. Install a grate between the firebox and the smokehouse tank, as an open fire can spoil the food. The best solution would be to provide a small transition in the form of a pipe. Remember, hot smoking is carried out at high temperatures.

Chimney for smokehouse

For a cold smokehouse, the pipe connecting the firebox and the tank is extended as much as possible so that the smoke reaches the food already cooled to 19-25 degrees. The design of the smokehouse may include two removable pipes: one for hot smoking, the other for cold smoking.

Place a metal sheet wrapped in foil at the bottom of the food tank to catch excess grease. You will have to change the foil after each use. Attach a metal pipe to the top on which pieces of meat or fish are suspended.

The assembled smoking unit can be additionally equipped on the outside with a table for food.

General recommendations for using a smokehouse based on a gas cylinder

The finished smokehouse is usually coated with dark-colored enamel. However, this is not necessary, since gradually it will still become covered with soot. Before using the smokehouse for the first time, the firebox should be heated at least once “idle” to completely get rid of extraneous odors.

For cold smoking you need to extend the chimney pipe

When making smoked meats at home, use sawdust only from deciduous trees. Wood from fruit trees and shrubs is excellent for smoking. It would be a good idea to have a small wood chipper at your disposal.

When placing meat or fish preparations in the smokehouse, wrap them in one layer of gauze. It will retain excess resin, which gives smoked meats bitterness.

Do-it-yourself smokehouse from a gas cylinder: video

A gas cylinder is one of the best materials for the manufacture of smokehouses. And it's quite easy to do if you follow the instructions exactly.

And the resulting structure can be used not only for its intended purpose, but also as a barbecue or grill.

Selecting a gas cylinder

To build a universal and high-performance smokehouse, you will need an empty gas cylinder medium size.

The products most often used for these purposes are “ AG-50» volume 50 l. This is an excellent choice in all respects:

  • thick metal walls will last a long time keep warm;
  • streamlined shape contributes to better smoke circulation;
  • impressive weight provides sustainability(on a stand).

Important! Even in an empty bottle there is always condensation, which needs to be drained. This liquid has an unpleasant and corrosive odor that is difficult to remove from any surface, so it must be drained away from residential buildings, into some container with a lid.

Preparing the cylinder for use as a barbecue-smokehouse

To prepare the cylinder, you need to open the valve and release all remaining gas. Then the valve is cut down - slowly, using a hacksaw. To avoid overheating, periodically water the cut area with cold water. The liquid is drained from the cylinder.

If it flows out reluctantly, to speed up the process, drill hole with a diameter of 2-4 mm. Next, using a hose, pour water into the container and leave it to settle for a day. The next day, the hole in the cylinder is tightly closed by driving a wooden block into it.

From this moment on, you can begin the work that is necessary to obtain the desired version of the smokehouse.

Smokehouse project from a cylinder

There are several options for constructing a smokehouse from a gas cylinder. They differ in several ways:

  • location fireboxes;
  • arrangement smoke chamber(method and place of installation of gratings and hooks);
  • location and design doors;
  • way smoke supply and exhaust.

Firebox can be done from another cylinder smaller capacity, welding it directly to the smoking chamber. If there is no second cylinder, you can build a firebox from metal sheets and connect it to the cylinder using a pipe.

Photo 1. Diagram explaining the principle by which a smokehouse, barbecue grill and barbecue are combined in one product.

When choosing the second option, it becomes possible to do universal smokehouse, which with a short pipe (chimney) will work as a device for hot smoking, and with lengthening (extension) of the pipe - as for cold smoking.

Smokehouse stands

You can make both a stationary and portable smokehouse from a gas cylinder. In any case it will be necessary stand(bed), since the round container is unstable, despite its heavy weight. Both removable and non-removable (welded to the cylinder) supports have proven themselves well.

If the first option is most desirable, then the easiest way to proceed is as follows:

  • drill into the wall of the cylinder 2 aligned holes for bolts with diameter 10 mm;
  • weld from metal corners or profile pipes stand on legs like a barbecue (optimal dimensions of the structure 60x25 cm);
  • weld along the support strip of metal;
  • put the bottle down and Mark on the strip hole location for bolts;
  • drill out there are holes in the strip (similar to those on the container);
  • weld from the bottom side of the strip nuts for bolts with diameter 10 mm so that they are exactly under the holes;
  • put the cylinder down on support and screw the bolts through all 4 holes(in container and on strip).

You can also make a stand in a simpler way: weld a “table” of size from sections of profile pipe 60x25 cm, and weld two more pipe sections to it on top, each length 60 cm. A container is placed in the space between them. Additional stops can be welded to the frame of the stand: sections of pipe located at a slope towards the container.

A non-removable stand is made as follows: legs from metal corners of the required length are welded to the container.

Instructions for making a smokehouse with your own hands

At the stage of preparing the cylinder, water is poured into it, after which the hole is tightly closed by driving a block into it. It is in this state that the metal is cut. Water in the container prevents accidental fire. To complete the task use grinder with a disc for metal thickness 2.5-3 mm.

Important! When sawing a water cylinder, you need to place any suitable container under it, in which you will drain liquid when making the first cut. After obtaining the desired hole, drain all the water.

To set up a smokehouse you will need:

  1. Two door hinges that will be used to close and open the door.
  2. Door handle.
  3. Knee.
  4. Pipes.
  5. Lattice.
  6. Hooks for hanging products.

Stages of work

Step 1. The upper part of the neck with the tap is cut off.

Step 2. Drain the water.

Step 3. They saw off the back ring, which was necessary to stabilize the cylinder in a vertical position. As a rule, this ring is not welded along the entire circumference of the container, but in several places. We need to find them and cut them down.

Step 4. Each cylinder has a seam line that runs along it, from the bottom to the top. This seam will serve as a guide for marking. Algorithm of actions:

  • take roulette, measured from the seam line 24 cm;
  • put a mark marker or simple pencil;
  • find point at the opposite end balloon, draw a straight line between them;
  • retreat 3 cm from each seam, passing along the circumference of the cylinder towards its central part, and draw lines (you should get two “rings”, one each in the upper and lower parts).

Step 5. Make a straight cut along the line that runs along the entire length of the cylinder, but begins and ends at the previously drawn circles near the neck and bottom (i.e., does not reach the seams).

Step 6. Door hinges are attached on both sides of the cut so that they work to open and close.

Step 7. Using a tape measure, measure the desired width of the door from the cutting line. Draw a line.

Step 8. They make cuts along this line and along the side lines along the circumference, but do not finish the door a little so that it is still in the position fixed on the cylinder.

Step 9. Weld the handle to the door.

Step 10. Finish sawing the door and open it.

Step 11. To prevent the door from moving during operation of the smokehouse, two metal rods located along its width are welded to it on the inside.

Step 12. An elbow made of pipe, the cross-section of which corresponds to the diameter of the hole, is welded to the hole in the neck of the container formed after sawing off the tap. A chimney pipe will be installed in this elbow, in the upper part of which a damper is attached. With its help, smoke output is controlled.

Step 13. A circle is cut out at the bottom of the cylinder, to which a pipe coming from the firebox is welded.

Step 14. Construct a firebox by choosing any of the methods proposed above.

Step 15. All components of the smokehouse are assembled into a single structure.

To make a smokehouse from a gas cylinder with your own hands, you don’t have to spend a lot of money and effort. If the product is not in stock, it can be purchased. The cylinder is inexpensive. You will also need a welding machine, grinder and other tools.

Due to the round shape of the cylinder, the product will truly become original. In addition, the smokehouse can be upgraded by attaching wheels, a thermometer and other necessary parts. The result will be a device that will always delight the whole family with smoked products, for example, poultry, meat and scrap.

Preparing the raw product

From a gas cylinder you can make not only a high-quality smokehouse, but also a barbecue. It is not advisable to choose a rusty container, since the service life depends on it. You cannot work with a cylinder that contains gas or even accumulated propane vapor.

To get to work, you need to prepare all the necessary tools. But, in addition to having the equipment, you should have at least minimal skills in using electrical equipment. So , list of necessary tools and materials looks like this:

With skillful manufacture of the smokehouse, the service life will be approximately 20 years. But purchased options cannot boast of such impressive durability.

Removing gas from a cylinder

So, the gas cylinder was found. Now it needs to be inspected for defects. Then the gas is removed from the container, since even after the propane is completely removed, accumulated steam remains, which, when interacting with a spark, can ignite. This is very important, because no one wants injuries during work. To dispose of propane, the cylinder should be taken outside. Strictly prohibited o carry out such work in the rain. The workplace must not contain explosive or flammable substances.

Initially, the product is placed vertically. Next, the valve is unscrewed as much as possible. After which the cylinder is placed on the ground on its side, and the remaining gas comes out of it. After some time, a check is made for the presence of propane. It is enough to use a mushy soap solution that is applied to the valve. If bubbles appear on the soap, the gas has not yet escaped and you need to wait a little.

After the gas has been completely removed, you should get to work removing the neck by cutting off the top of the cylinder. The top with the tap must be cut off with a hacksaw. After removing the top, a cavity is formed into which you need to pour water using a hose. With this method, all unpleasant odors will disappear.

To completely eliminate the smell, fill the container with water and pour ammonia into it. It is important to stir the liquid thoroughly and leave for two hours. Then the liquid is drained and the container is washed again with fresh running water.

The appearance of a spark is unacceptable. To reduce risk In the event of a gas fire, the cut site should be treated with water from time to time.

Rules for making a smokehouse

To make a smokehouse from a gas cylinder, you do not need to make preliminary drawings, since there are very few steps to create the structure. Usually the smokehouse is made from material that was found in the yard. However, if the product will be more complex and have various elements, for example, wheels for transportation or an electric stove, then in this case it is advisable to make simple diagrams. In general, a device for smoking products is made in stages:

Construction of legs

To prevent food and heat from tipping over, the smokehouse is given stability. Legs that are welded to the product are suitable for this purpose. You will need to purchase pipes or corners as support. It is important that these elements are the same length, ideally 80−100 cm. Parts are attached to the marks and attached by welding.

It is preferable to make the supports removable. 4 bolts are welded to the container. Next, take 4 tubes of the same diameter with bolts. Threads are made in the tubes, and then they are screwed onto bolts. In this way, the tubes can be unscrewed at any moment, and the structure can be placed in the car.

Instead of legs, you can build a more complex structure, which will make it possible to transport the smokehouse throughout the yard without any difficulties. The technology for mounting the supports is the same, but small wheels are attached to the lower part of the corners. Such wheels can be removed from a children's bicycle, if such transport is available.

Often the base of the smokehouse is not removable. On the contrary, the structure is further strengthened to make it stationary. Then the risk of capsizing is significantly reduced.

Firebox for cylinder

Some owners prefer a barbecue built from a cylinder, which does not include a smokehouse. In this case, there is no need for a firebox. But if the owner of the dacha decided to equip his cylinder as a smokehouse, then he cannot do without a special container.

To make an additional container for igniting wood chips, you will need a sheet 4 mm thick. The metal sheet must be cut so that identical parts are obtained from which a compact box can be made.

Another cylinder can serve as a firebox, but it must be cut, marking a third of the entire length. The resulting cavity in the future firebox is closed with a sheet, secured by welding. Or you need to cut off the top of the cylinder and weld it to the segment. You should get a small balloon. The procedure is the same as for making a smokehouse. The door is cut out. A handle is attached.

Such a barrel must be attached to the main cylinder. Metal is removed from the end parts of both products. It is necessary to make a strip 2-3 cm wide. Next, the firebox is welded to the bottom of the smokehouse so that the two slots on both cylinders are located opposite each other. A damper is made in the same place.

The design can be made differently. One hole is made in both products. A corrugation is attached to the holes, connecting the firebox and smokehouse. This way, the smoke will enter the container with the food, and there will be no danger of open fire getting into the smokehouse itself.

Advantages and disadvantages of the product

A gas cylinder smokehouse boasts the following advantages:

In addition to its undeniable advantages, the smokehouse has a number of disadvantages. The main disadvantages include:

The main advantage of the design is the metal. The fact is that the cylinder is designed to store gas; therefore, high-quality metal is selected for manufacturing. According to the technology, the wall thickness is 3 mm.
