Good afternoon everyone!

Today I would like to talk about installing blinds on a plastic window. The opinion that window openings in residential premises should be covered with textile curtains is becoming a thing of the past.

Blinds are varied and functional so much that they will give a head start to any curtains and tulle. Before buying a design of a certain color or size, you need to think about how it will be located on the window and how it can be installed.

  • Vertical or horizontal slats,
  • rolled or pleated,
  • fabric or plastic - regardless of these indicators, blinds can be attached with or without power tools.

It is important to choose the location option:

  1. in the window opening,
  2. over it
  3. or directly on the window sash.

Each of these cases is worth considering separately.

Blinds are the most practical way to decorate windows. Easy to install and easy to maintain, blinds are very popular. Thanks to the variety of types and colors, they will harmoniously fit into any room and complement the interior of the room. In this article we will look at the types of blinds and how to install them on windows. Let's learn how to attach blinds yourself in different ways.

Kinds

In construction stores, one’s eyes run wide from the variety of colors and textures of window decor. How to choose suitable blinds and install them correctly? First of all, let's figure out what types of blinds exist.

  1. Horizontal blinds. The most practical, they tightly close the window and protect from light and prying eyes.
  2. Vertical blinds. Most often they are installed in offices or used to decorate blind windows, as they make it difficult to open the windows.
  3. Roller blinds. Close the window very tightly. They can become an independent decoration for a window opening.
  4. Cassette blinds. They consist of a special box that is installed on the frame. Do not interfere with opening windows.

How to choose

When choosing blinds, take into account the functional purpose of the room and the overall style of the room. Blinds can be fabric, plastic, aluminum, bamboo, etc.

A variety of colors and textures will allow you to choose the decor that suits your room. Be sure to measure your window before purchasing. This will allow you to choose the appropriate size product.

How to install blinds yourself

So, the blinds have been purchased. Don't rush to call an installation technician. You can easily cope with this task yourself. In addition to learning a useful skill, installing blinds can be a fun family pastime.

Blinds are installed in three ways:

  1. In the overlay. The product is attached at the top of the opening and covers the entire window to the window sill or below.
  2. In the window opening. Blinds are mounted in the window opening closer to the window. They also close the entire window up to the windowsill.
  3. Separately for each sash. The most practical way. The blinds are attached directly to the sash, thereby allowing you to open the shutters or put the window into ventilation mode without raising the blinds.

Note!

When taking measurements, you need to make an allowance depending on the type of installation. If you are going to attach the blinds with an overlay, add 10 cm to the width and height of the window opening. If you install blinds in a window opening, the height of the opening in its pure form, the width is minus 1.5 cm. When installed on each sash, the sash width is minus 2 cm, the sash height is minus 3 cm.

Each type of blinds has its own installation characteristics. Next, we will consider separately the principles of fastening products of each type.

Installing horizontal blinds

Typically, horizontal blinds come with all the necessary fasteners. Armed with a screwdriver, we begin the installation. They are installed in the window opening or on each sash separately.

  1. To attach the blinds to the window, measure the required distance and mark the places where the top strip will be attached.
  2. Using a screwdriver, drill holes and attach the corners that will hold the top bar.
  3. Secure the bar at the corners. First on one, then on the second. You should hear a click when attaching.
  4. Unfold the attached fabric downwards, mark the points where the bottom bar will be attached.
  5. Install the bottom bar in the same way as the top using the corners.

Installation of vertical blinds

Vertical blinds consist of a cornice with clamps that regulate sliding/sliding and lamellas - a canvas that covers the window.

The kit contains all the necessary fasteners, as well as detailed installation instructions. This type of blinds is installed with an overlay.

  1. Attach the curtain rod with clips to the ceiling. You can use the same screwdriver to attach the cornice.
  2. Insert the slats into the cornice. Each part of the canvas must be mounted separately. To do this, insert each strip into the corresponding latch and wait for the characteristic click.

Installing roller blinds

Roller blinds have the same mechanism as horizontal ones and are installed in the same way. It is most convenient to attach roller blinds directly to the sash, then they will not interfere when opening the windows. If you need to fix them in the window opening, it is better to use additional brackets, because the window handle protrudes a few centimeters. Without brackets, the handle will stick out from under the canvas and spoil the overall appearance.

Installation of cassette blinds

Cassette-type blinds are a ready-made box with a mechanism that is attached to the window frame. Installation is quite simple.

  1. Attach the top strip with the canvas using screws.
  2. Then glue the side guides (usually with an adhesive backing) onto the sash vertically.
  3. Unfold the canvas, adjust the boundaries of the upper and lower positions of the canvas.
  4. Install all accessories.

Helpful advice!

Blinds have a clear geometric shape, so carefully measure and calculate the attachment points to avoid asymmetry and unnecessary holes.

How to attach blinds to plastic windows

What should you do if you need to attach blinds to the sash, but you cannot drill plastic windows? In this case, you can install the blinds using brackets. The devices are attached to the frame, and the supporting structure of the blinds is mounted on them. You can secure the bracket to the window frame using:

  • double-sided tape;
  • hook onto the upper part of the opening sash frame.

This method will allow you to securely fix the product and preserve the integrity of the metal-plastic profile.

To correctly install blinds with your own hands, it is important:

  • decide on the type of blinds you want to purchase;
  • choose the optimal installation option;
  • take measurements of the window, take into account the necessary margin;
  • When installing, strictly observe the dimensions of the product;
  • carefully mark the drilling points;
  • Follow the instructions included in the kit.

How to take measurements

How to install blinds

Use dowels and screws that match the fasteners and the material of the walls or ceiling to which the blinds will be attached.

Note!

Before installing the fastenings, check whether the folded blinds do not interfere with the opening of the window.

We advise you to carefully check whether window handles, flower pots (and other “foreign” objects on the window sills) will interfere with the opening and closing of the blinds and the rotation of the slats (window sill, radiators, etc.)

How to install horizontal blinds

  1. Measure the same distance from each edge of the window.
  2. Drill into the wall and insert a dowel corresponding to the wall material (concrete, plaster, etc.), then screw the fastener into place with screws.
  3. Using a level and ruler, mark the location of the second fastener. Screw the second fastener in the same way as the first.
  4. When installing horizontal blinds, it is necessary to use an additional intermediate fastening if the width of the blinds exceeds a certain distance. To attach vertical blinds with a width of more than 1.6 m to the ceiling, it is necessary to install 3 mounting brackets.
  5. Place the additional fastener at a distance of 10 cm from the control cord (this is where the blind mechanism experiences the greatest load).
  6. Attach the blinds to the brackets

Cutting horizontal blinds to width

  1. Lay the folded blinds on a horizontal surface and measure the part that needs to be cut on each side. It is necessary to cut off equal parts of the blinds on the left and right.
  2. Cut the cornice and rail. Don't forget to cover the slats to avoid damaging them.

Cutting blinds to height:

  1. Remove the parts that are located under the lower curtain rod at the bottom of the blinds so that the cord is released.
  2. Untie the knots to release the slats.
  3. Remove excess slats to achieve the desired height of the blinds.
  4. Align the blinds by inserting the bottom curtain rod into the last link.
  5. Cut off the loose ends of the cord, tie knots and replace the bottom curtain rod pieces.

Cutting roller blinds

  1. Using a hacksaw, cut off the pipe and bottom cornice.
  2. Cut the fabric with scissors. If the curtains have a pattern on them, you need to cut equal parts of the curtains on the left and right.
  3. Installation of roller blinds on the tube is carried out using double-sided tape located on it. (Be careful not to open the curtains all the way; always leave a little fabric on the tube).

Cutting vertical blinds

Cutting the control rail of vertical blinds.

The slats are easy to cut and install. Cut the slats to the desired height with scissors, following the instructions on the package. Cut the control rail using a hacksaw.

When choosing the material for blinds, you must take into account the room in which they will hang. Plastic blinds are best suited for the bathroom and kitchen - they are not afraid of moisture and are easy to clean. For the kitchen, we can also recommend aluminum blinds that do not support combustion.

Why are blinds needed?

Their main characteristics are: the ability to easily attach to windows, ease of use and excellent performance of their main function - regulating the light in the room. When constantly working at a computer, it is also impossible to do without using blinds.

The only question in this matter is to understand how you can hang blinds on plastic windows in order to get the maximum effect from their use.

Step-by-step instructions for installing blinds

Determining the size

So, the first step is to purchase blinds of the chosen manufacturer, the appropriate size and other individual characteristics. It should be noted that before you go shopping, you must determine the size of the glass: taking this value into account, you need to know that the blinds must completely cover the glass (widthwise), slightly extending beyond the frame.

Unpacking

After purchasing, the first step is to unpack and untangle the cord, and also examine the fasteners.

From what is included in the package, you can set aside the dowels, because in this case the blinds will be attached directly to the window.

Deciding on fasteners

We find a mount for which we will attach our blinds. The second step in installing blinds is to find two metal brackets with latches. This will be required in order to subsequently secure the container with “blinds” on them.

We make markings and install fastening brackets

The next step is marking. To perform it correctly, first of all, you must carefully read the instructions. After all, you need to place the fastening brackets in such a way that it is easy to insert the container into them.

In other words, you will need to find the optimal distance from the end of the marking. An important point at this step is the complete exclusion of amateur performances: everything on the window should be drawn with a pencil according to the level, but not by eye.

Otherwise, the curvature of the landing will immediately catch your eye when the plates rise, and this does not look very aesthetically pleasing. It is also necessary to pay attention to the fact that the slats do not move beyond the glass, since if there is a movement, the adjustment of the container will be disrupted.

Helpful advice!

The brackets must be secured with the latches facing upwards. However, before doing this, you must drill the window with a (thin) drill, and then point the screws towards the plastic.

If everything is done carefully, then nothing terrible will happen to the window, because the remaining drilled holes are removed using acrylic sealant. However, if you perform this step carefully and carefully, they will not exist at all.

We put on the container

Then the container is put on. We cover the latches and determine the correct fit. If the brackets are firmly located on the window, and the container can be easily removed or put on, it must be said that the work was done “excellently”. However, it is not yet fully completed.

The last thing left is to install the lower holders. Their role is to fix the sheet of slats and secure it to protect it from free movement. When lifting, the lower edge of the canvas must be removed from the holders by hand.

Installing the lower fasteners

In order to mark the lower holders, you need to lower the canvas down. Then you need to estimate by eye their position in the case of a tightly stretched fabric.

With a dangling canvas, it is impossible to accurately measure the lower holders. After taking the correct measurements, be sure to drill the holes and screw the holder with screws.

Attaching the holders

At this stage, the question begins to worry: how should the holder be rotated - outward or inward?

The answer is quite simple: both when screwing inward and outward, the result remains the same; in any case, no screws remain visible. Therefore, here you already need to rely on your convenience and principles.

This concludes the process of attaching blinds to the window.

Hide

In order for horizontal blinds to serve for a long time, you need to know how to hang horizontal blinds with your own hands correctly.

And also in our article we will look at how to wash horizontal blinds and repair them yourself.

Installing horizontal blinds - step-by-step instructions

How to attach horizontal blinds? Experts name 3 methods:

Mounting methods

1) To the ceiling.

2) To Wall.

3) In the window opening.

Before directly installing horizontal blinds, you must do the following:

Brackets

1. Determine the dimensions of horizontal blinds (width and height) based on the characteristics of the window opening.

If you want to install horizontal blinds directly into the window opening, then it is advisable to subtract 1-2 cm from the planned width of the structure (correction of uneven slopes).

2. Determine the best location of the control parts - on the left or on the right.

3. In addition, you need to decide on the type of fastening:

Set of tools

Either using standard twist brackets, or it will be installed on tilt-and-turn sashes with drilling, or attached to tilt-and-turn sashes without drilling.

4. Determine the length of the control mechanism. The standard length is 2/3 of the height of the blinds.

Please note that the possible minimum width of the blinds is 22 cm, and the maximum is 220 cm, with a guarantee of trouble-free operation. Of course, you can use 300 cm, but without a guarantee. And the height is 250 cm (maximum), if with a guarantee; and without it - 300 cm.

How to remove horizontal blinds?

Removing blinds

Before washing horizontal blinds (you can watch the video here:) they must be removed. We'll tell you how to do it right. Let us immediately note that dismantling horizontal blinds is much more difficult than vertical ones, since the latter have a fairly simple structure. You can read more about this in the article on our website.

First, let's look at how to remove horizontal blinds from a window without brackets:

1. Unfasten the curtain rods from the brackets that secure the blinds.

2. Remove the decorative cover, if there is one at the mounting location.

3. Lift the slats and, while holding them, locate the tabs of the tabs on the top edge.

4. Pull the latches towards you first and then to the right.

5. Pull the curtains down and forward.

6. Remove the product from the window and close it.

In addition to the method described above, you can also remove horizontal blinds along with their brackets:

Usually, for the installation of horizontal blinds and their entire structure, a standard metal corner and hexagonal screws are used, which only need to be unscrewed.

Remove the shutters.

If you have a roof window or a window structure with a plastic profile, then horizontal blinds are often installed with removable clamps using a clamping key turned clockwise.

Locate this key on the clamps and carefully turn it in the opposite direction.

If you still have questions - how to remove horizontal blinds, video instructions can be viewed here:

How to wash horizontal blinds - detailed instructions

Once you have removed the blinds, let's start cleaning them. However, we note that there are different options for caring for horizontal blinds, depending on their material.

How to wash horizontal aluminum blinds?

These blinds are easier to clean if they are not removed from the window structure. So let's get started:

  • Vacuum your blinds to remove accumulated dust.
  • Close the blinds tightly to avoid splashing the window.
  • Prepare a soap solution and add a little detergent to it.
  • Apply this solution using a sponge to each plank.
  • Leave for a couple of minutes so that any dirty or greasy residue disappears.
  • Wash each plank thoroughly, fixing it on the reverse side. Otherwise, a break will appear on it.
  • Rinse the blinds in warm, clean water.
  • Wipe the washed blinds dry.

The method of cleaning metal horizontal blinds can be quite simple. If possible, remove them from the structure. Then:

  • Prepare a solution of dishwashing detergent in the bathroom and place your blinds in it for 1-2 hours.
  • Wash each plank with a soft sponge. So, you will get rid of plaque.
  • Rinse the blinds and leave them to dry. Or wipe them dry and reattach them.

How to wash horizontal plastic blinds?

Caring for plastic horizontal blinds

Plastic horizontal blinds do not require special care. They tolerate cleaning well and can be washed easily, even with a weak soap solution.

  • Close the blinds and vacuum.
  • Wipe with a damp sponge or rag soaked in soapy water.

If your blinds are very dirty, they should be removed from the window. And then they are washed in the bathroom, just as in the case of aluminum horizontal products.

How to wash horizontal wooden blinds?

Cleaning wooden horizontal blinds with a vacuum cleaner

Wooden blinds are the most expensive and require careful care. Be aware that it is strictly forbidden to use water, as under its influence the wooden planks can change color and become deformed. If you want to preserve the original appearance of your blinds, then:

Wipe them with a clean and dry cloth or simply vacuum them.

However, we note that sometimes it is permissible to use a special cleaning agent for unvarnished wooden surfaces.

Repair of horizontal blinds

At the moment, the market is saturated with many components for different types of blinds. Therefore, you can repair horizontal blinds with your own hands. You just need to identify the faulty part, find it and simply replace it with a new one.

However, when disassembling the blinds, be sure to remember the location of all the parts and the order of disassembly. Otherwise, when reassembling you will make a lot of mistakes. It is best to photograph the entire disassembly process.

Installation of horizontal blinds

For repair you will need:

Screwdriver,

Pliers,

Wire. Bend it in half so that there is an eye like a needle.

This is necessary to thread the cord.

Now let’s look at the main damage to horizontal blinds and instructions for eliminating them:

1. The blade made of slats stopped working - the rotating mechanism was damaged. To repair it, do the following:

1) Remove the side caps from the top cornice.

2) Using pliers, pull the axle out of the rotating mechanism.

3) Remove the mechanism. To do this: release the sides of the cornice.

4) Take the new mechanism and assemble the structure in reverse order.

2. The slats are damaged:

1) Remove the blinds.

2) Squeeze the cord plugs out of the bottom lamella, cut off the end knots and pull out the cord.

Horizontal blinds in the hall

3) Remove the damaged strips and replace them with new ones.

4) Pass the cord through the holes of the strips and plugs.

5) Tie knots and insert plugs into the bottom lamella.

3. The ladder broke:

1) Remove the blinds and side caps from the top cornice.

Kitchen with horizontal blinds

2) Remove the upper ends of the ladder from the caliper, which is located on the axis of the rotating mechanism.

3) Disconnect the canvas from the curtain rod and remove the cord.

4) Pull the ladder out to the side, while holding the planks in your hand. Otherwise, the whole canvas will crumble.

5) Install the clamps on the new ladder in the same way as they were installed on the old one.

In addition to washing the blinds, you should also wash the windows from time to time. About how best to do this,

Plastic and aluminum blinds protect the room well from the effects of bright sunlight, which is very important in rooms that are located on the sunny side: in offices and living rooms, where the glare of the sun can interfere with watching TV or working on a computer. It is also convenient that installing horizontal blinds on plastic windows with your own hands is simple and does not require special skills.

Installation Features

The standard kit usually includes brackets, all consumables (bolts and dowels or tape), as well as instructions on how to install horizontal blinds on plastic windows. There is nothing complicated about it: first, brackets are mounted on the window, sashes or opening, and then a cornice is inserted into them.

There is no need to worry about how to correctly install the lamella system on the cornice: the manufacturer has already done this for you. Therefore, the entire installation process comes down to just mounting the side brackets and takes a minimum of time.

Installation of horizontal blinds on plastic windows can be carried out with drilling, without drilling (using double-sided tape) and on drop-down brackets. The choice of method largely depends on where exactly you plan to secure them.

Where to fix the blinds

Before hanging the blinds, please note: manufacturers provide a guarantee for blocks with a width of 22 cm to 220 cm and a height of up to 250 cm. A smaller width does not make sense, and for a larger one it is recommended to use two independent blocks. Blinds for large plastic windows are also available for sale, but they are attached without a guarantee for the functionality of the structure.

How to make dimensions

Before installing blinds correctly, you need to take measurements. All subsequent installation and performance of the block system will directly depend on how accurately they are carried out. Instructions for taking dimensions are different for each installation location:

  • Inside window openings (suitable for cases where the window is located in a recess in the wall). It is important here that the slats do not touch the slopes when lifting and lowering. Based on this, we select the width of the block so that it is 4-5 cm (2-2.5 cm on each side) narrower than the window opening. The height of the entire curtain should accordingly be set 2-2.5 cm shorter than the length of the opening. To ensure that each sash can open freely when the slats are raised, a space must be left between the top edge of the window and the blinds.
  • Outside window openings (also suitable for cases where the window unit is placed in a wall recess). This arrangement makes it possible to cover the entire area of the opening with one wide curtain and, if necessary, darken the room more effectively. To do this, you need the width of the slats to be 5-5.5 cm on each side (10-11 cm in total) wider than the window opening, and the height of the entire curtain to be 10 cm lower than the window sill.
  • On window sashes (curtains open together with the sashes, suitable for the mini model). This method saves space as much as possible and leaves the window sill completely free. In this case, blinds to plastic windows must be attached so that they do not interfere with the rotation of the handles on the sashes and do not touch the window sill, but completely cover the glass. To do this, their width should be 1.5 cm on each side edge (only 3 cm) wider than the glass part of the window, and their height should be 1.5 cm greater than its length.
  • Outside the window opening (carried out when the window is located on the same plane with the wall). Since the handles on the shutters extend inside the room, in this case you will need a special bracket, which will make it possible to install fixed blinds at a short distance from the wall. In order for them to completely shade the room when closed, their width should be 20 cm wider than the window opening (10 cm on each side), and their length should be equal to or 10 cm greater than the height of the window.

How to markup

In order to prevent distortions during installation, before installing horizontal blinds on the wall above a plastic window with drilling, it is necessary to make markings. Do not forget to leave enough space above the window, otherwise, when assembled, the slats will interfere with the opening of the sashes.

We will need:

  1. Blind block.
  2. Bolts and dowels suitable for the bracket.
  3. Roulette.
  4. Level.
  5. Construction pencil.
  6. Drill.
  7. Hammer.
  8. Screwdriver.

Operating procedure:

  1. Using a level and ruler, mark each side.
  2. Place the bottom of the mount on the reference line, then mark the drilling points with a pencil.
  3. Mark the markings with crosses to better identify the drilling points.
  4. Drill where the dowels will go, keeping the tool perpendicular.
  5. Insert the dowels by hand and drive them in with a hammer.

How to hang

The hardest work is behind us. All that remains is to hang the horizontal blinds in place.

Procedure:

  1. We install universal brackets.
  2. By turning the latch counterclockwise, we secure the upper cornice to the bracket at a distance of 20 cm from the edge.
  3. Turn the latch clockwise until it stops.
  4. We insert the hook of the rotating mechanism located on the upper cornice into the control handle (relevant for models with a cord and a handle).

We check the functionality of the system: raise and lower the slats, rotate them at different angles, changing the lighting, check whether they interfere with the opening of the sashes. If all these manipulations were successful without any extra effort, the blinds are installed correctly.
In contrast to thick curtains, a lightweight slatted design made of colored plastic or aluminum painted in different colors ensures good air circulation while guaranteeing uniform lighting. With its help, you can easily protect your home from direct sunlight, and if the color and texture of the slats are correctly chosen to match the design of the apartment, they will highlight its advantages.

How to install horizontal blinds with your own hands in the video:

[Rated: 5 Average rating: 3]

In order for window blinds to serve for a long time, it is important to know how to install horizontal blinds correctly, in accordance with technology. Although this task at first glance does not seem to be such a difficult process, there are many nuances that must be taken into account during installation work. If you are not completely sure that you can handle the fastening yourself, contact a specialist.

Necessary tools and preparation

The first thing you need to decide on is the installation method. Installation of horizontal blinds can be done in a window opening, on a frame, to a wall or ceiling. The method of fastening depends on how the measurements were taken. If the overall dimensions of the product are larger than the window opening, then it will need to be mounted on the opening. In this case, you need to decide whether they will be attached to the wall or to the ceiling. If the product is the size of a window, fit into the window opening.

Installation requires the following tools:

  • roulette;
  • crosshead screwdriver;
  • pencil;
  • screwdriver;
  • screws, dowels and brackets.

Before starting installation work, it is necessary to carry out appropriate markings.

Marking requires special precision, since it is very important that the blinds do not interfere with the operation of the window, and the operation of the window sashes does not interfere with the blinds.

Fastening technology

After the preparatory work, you can proceed to installation of the product. It is necessary to drill holes using a screwdriver and insert dowels into them in accordance with the markings made. After this, you can begin attaching the brackets with self-tapping screws.

It is necessary to unfold and assemble the device, in accordance with the overall dimensions, mark with a pencil the places where the brackets are attached. It should be taken into account that the bracket should not get into the place where the clamp or control system is attached. The distance between the brackets should be about 60 cm.

As a rule, the product is mounted on 2 brackets, but for large sizes it is better to attach an additional bracket for reliability and to reduce the load. It should also be installed near the control mechanism, since it is in this place that the device is subject to the greatest load.

The brackets are designed in such a way that the upper cornice simply snaps into place. The product must be fully assembled before attaching it to the brackets. Having firmly secured the top bar in the bracket, turn its latch counterclockwise until it stops. In a similar way, the product is attached both to the wall and to the ceiling or upper slopes. The only difference is in the method of mounting the brackets. They have holes for both types, horizontally located holes for mounting to the wall and vertically located - to the ceiling or upper slope. After installation, you should check the operation of the mechanism.

If you want to mount the product directly on the frame of a plastic window close to the double-glazed window, you must use fasteners specifically for PVC windows. In this case, the useful area of the window and window sill is not occupied. The blinds fit tightly to the sash and open with it. For this option, installation without drilling is best.

Not many people know that blinds were invented several centuries ago. Today it is one of the most popular decorative and protective devices for windows. The article will discuss how to hang blinds on plastic windows yourself. You can find out what types of multi-leaf window curtains there are and how to properly install vertical and horizontal blinds.

Kinds

Blinds- one of the types of window curtains, devices in the form of rigid, parallel to each other and adjustable plates made of various materials - fabric, wood, metal, plastic. They have several functions:

  • protect from light;
  • decorate the window;
  • regulate air flows.
There are several types of blinds. The most common of them are:
  • horizontal;
  • vertical;
  • roll;
  • pleated.
We suggest you understand the advantages and disadvantages of each type.

Did you know? The official history of the invention of blinds begins in 1841. It was this year that their production was patented by the American John Hampton, although the production of rigid curtains had been carried out before. So, since the 1760s, they were produced in Philadelphia by the Englishman John Webster.

Horizontal

Horizontal or Venetian blinds are thin plates (slats) that are arranged one above the other like a ladder. They are connected to each other by a cord, which allows you to open and close them, as well as adjust the height. The plates are controlled using a rotating rod. The slats can be made of different materials - wood, metal, bamboo, fabric.

The main advantages of these types of curtains are:

  • good protection from sunlight;
  • increased heat transfer;
  • possibility of adjusting lighting intensity;
  • reliability;
  • durability;
  • ease of maintenance and operation;
  • the ability to visually expand the size of the room;
  • easy installation;
  • can be used for any room, including kitchen, bath, balcony;
  • low cost.
There are probably no disadvantages to horizontal blinds. They can only be present depending on the material from which they are made. We will talk about them in more detail in a separate section below.

Vertical

Vertical blinds appeared somewhat later than horizontal ones - in 1960. However, they quickly gained popularity and today are successfully used to decorate various rooms.

These are plastic, metal or fabric slats suspended on a cornice in a vertical position parallel to each other and connected at the bottom with a cord. They are regulated by a side mechanism that rotates the plates - using a decorative cord (chain) they rotate, and using a rope they move to one side, fully or partially opening the window.

The advantages of vertical blinds are:

  • versatility - the possibility of installation in window openings, to the ceiling, to the wall above the window, installation in attic and ordinary windows;
  • ease of installation;
  • ease of care;
  • effective regulation of sunlight flows;
  • good air access when darkening;
  • the ability to combine with regular curtains;
  • the ability to visually increase the height of the room.
Disadvantages include:
  • inconvenience when moving to the side when opening the window;
  • impossibility of placing flowers on the windowsill when mounted in a window opening.

Rolled

Roller blinds have recently entered the field of view of modern apartment design. They are preferred by those who love coziness and comfort in their home. They are the ones who can create them in the bedroom, living room and kitchen. In addition, the appearance of roller blinds is more attractive than other types, while functionality also remains high.

They are designed in the form of a horizontal shaft on which a roll of fabric is wound, and a control mechanism in the form of a cord, a spring holder or an electric drive. The fabric can be lowered and raised to the desired length, completely or partially covering the window. Roller blinds are mounted in the window opening, on the ceiling or on the wall, on the window sash.

The advantages of roller blinds are:

  • ease of operation;
  • easy to care for - the fabric is impregnated with a dust- and water-repellent composition;
  • the ability to implement any design idea;
  • durability;
  • good protection from sunlight and room overheating;
  • the ability to create any degree of room illumination;
  • environmental friendliness;
  • ergonomics;
  • Possibility of installation on roof windows;
  • when installed on each sash, there is no interference with opening windows and decorating the window sill;
  • possibility of making curtains from transparent materials.

The disadvantages include the price, which is much higher than that of more familiar and common horizontal and vertical designs, as well as the fragility of the spring holder.

One type of roller blinds is cassette. This is an option designed for plastic windows. It is assumed that the slats or fabric roll, when closing, are hidden in a specially designed box (cassette) attached to the window sash.

This design allows you to save space, free up the window and window sill, and additionally protect the material from dust, dirt, and deformation. Cassette options are made of fabric, bamboo, aluminum, and plastic. There are three types of cassettes: round, angular and flat.

Pleated

Another option for fabric blinds is pleated. As the name already suggests, these are fabric curtains gathered into a small fold. Their choice is huge and comes in various colors, fabric density, and shapes. Some of them are sewn using a special pattern.

Thanks to this, pleated curtains can fit into any interior, creating an original atmosphere. This option is a piece of fabric that is attached to a special profile and controlled using a chain, cord or electric drive.

Advantages of pleated curtains:

  • originality;
  • external attractiveness;
  • good functionality;
  • durability;
  • reliability;
  • miniature design;
  • the ability to design a window of any shape and from any material.

Original and sophisticated interior solutions cannot be achieved without the use of multi-textured blinds, i.e. those in which the slats are made of various materials using a variety of decor.

Types of material

As already mentioned, at different times, blinds were made from different textures. Today, the most common materials for rigid window curtains are fabric, plastic and aluminum, and less often wood. Each of them has both pros and cons.

Fabric

Textile blinds- this is one of the best options for decorating windows and protecting the room from sunlight in apartments and houses. There are both horizontal and vertical designs.

Many people are attracted by the appearance and huge selection of colors of fabric blinds, but are put off by the idea that they will require the same care as regular curtains. However, it is not.

Textiles for blinds are impregnated with special impregnations that prevent dirt, dust and moisture from being absorbed. Maintenance will consist only of periodically wiping the material with a slightly damp cloth and vacuuming.
High-quality textile blinds do not fade, do not deform, fit into any interior, and are not too expensive. However, compared to metal, plastic and wooden structures, they have a shorter service life. Textile models are not the best option for the kitchen or catering establishments, as they can absorb odors.

Did you know? The first blinds were made from wooden slats. They were replaced by metal curtains. After World War II, fabrics were also used to make window security devices.

Plastic

One of the most popular types, due to its low price and the possibility of use in various premises - office, apartment, public, utility, with high humidity. The polymers from which the lamellas are made can be of varying degrees of light transmission, of various colors, with or without patterns. They are practical, lightweight, easy to install and maintain, and are sold at the best price.
Among the disadvantages:

  • creating noise in a draft, with open windows;
  • some polymers turn yellow under prolonged exposure to sunlight;
  • cannot be used near stoves and other heating devices due to poor fire resistance;
  • release of toxic substances during a fire.

Aluminum

Along with plastic ones, aluminum blinds are also popular. They have high strength, durability, fire resistance, and the ability to withstand different temperatures and moisture. They are often used to protect windows in public places, offices, and medical institutions. They have an attractive price. They can be horizontal, vertical, cassette.

Disadvantages include heavier weight and the creation of a noise effect in drafts.

Wooden

Wooden blinds are used in certain types of interiors; they go well with fabric curtains and furniture made of natural wood. They allow you to create a warm homely atmosphere. They are reliable, strong, durable, environmentally friendly, and protect well from the sun. At the same time, they are one of the most expensive options.

Installation technology

You can install blinds without the help of professionals. We offer you instructions for working with horizontal and vertical rigid curtains.

Horizontal

Horizontal structures can be fastened in four ways:

  • to the ceiling;
  • to the wall above the window;
  • in a window opening;
  • to the window sashes.
First you need to take measurements. The height and width of the window opening are measured with a tape measure. On a piece of paper you need to draw a diagram of the window, on which you can then take measurements.

When installing curtains in a window opening their size is calculated by subtracting 1 cm from the height and 2 cm from the width.

When installed above a window opening The size of the blinds is calculated based on adding 5-7 cm to its height and 20 cm to its width.

When attached to the sash The width is measured from the joint of the bead with the window on the left side to the joint of the bead with the window on the right side, adding 1 cm.

When measuring height on a blind window 3 cm is added to the distance from bead to bead, on the sash - 4 cm.

Conventional horizontal blinds consist of the following elements:

  • upper part - rotating axis, rollers, cornice, brackets, cord clamp, rotating mechanism, top cover;
  • middle part - lamellas and plug;
  • lower part - lower cornice, side covers.
For installation you will need the following tools:
  • screwdriver;
  • pencil;
  • screws.

The technology for installing ready-made aluminum blinds on plastic windows is as follows:
  1. Straighten the structure.
  2. Remove the control handle.
  3. Attach fasteners to the top bar.
  4. Attach the structure to the installation site and mark the mounting locations for the brackets. The distance between them should be at least 60 cm.
  5. Attach the brackets to the wall, window frame or sash.
  6. Insert the top cornice into the brackets.
  7. Open the blinds and mark the attachment points for the lower fasteners.
  8. Attach the lower clamps.
  9. Insert the adjusting knob.

Important!Make sure that the brackets do not get caught in the control mechanism, cord clamp or support.

If the finished blinds are longer than needed, they can be trimmed. To do this, you need to remove the side ones and remove the bottom clamps from the bottom bar. Then pull out the knots of the cord from the two holes formed and untie them. Remove excess slats. Re-insert the cords into the holes in the bottom bar and tie knots. Replace the bottom and side clips.

It is possible to shorten the blinds in width, but this is much more difficult to do. In order not to spoil the curtain, it is better to contact a specialist. For pruning you will need a fine-toothed hacksaw. The slats should be folded into one strip and cut to the required length. Then polish the ends with a file and, if necessary, tint.

Installing roller blinds

To install roller blinds on a wall, in an opening or on a ceiling, you will need drilling and the presence of a drill or hammer drill, depending on the material from which the ceiling and walls are made. Roller blinds are attached to plastic or wooden windows using double-sided tape and PVC staples without drilling.

If the blinds will be attached to the sash, then to calculate their dimensions you will need to know not only the width and height of the window, but also the depth of the glazing bead. The choice of system will depend on the latter size. If the bead depth is more than 1.5 cm, you need to pay attention to the Uni type system, up to 1.5 cm - Profil and Mini.
Add 3 cm to the width of the glass - this will be the width of the curtain. The length of standard curtains is about 2 m. If they are too long for your windows, they can be trimmed.

Important! The length of roller blinds is calculated based on the fact that there must be at least 50 cm of fabric on the roll.

The technology for fastening roller blinds without drilling is as follows:

  1. Install a plug on one end of the roll, and a rotating mechanism with a plastic chain on the other.
  2. Insert the clamp into the bracket and fasten it to the bracket.
  3. Install the brackets into the roll according to the instructions.
  4. Attach the curtain to the mounting location.
  5. Mark the mounting locations for the brackets.
  6. Check that nothing is blocking the opening of the curtain.
  7. Degrease the place where the brackets are attached.
  8. Place tape on the sash where the bracket is attached.
  9. Degrease the brackets.
  10. Peel off the protective film of the tape.
  11. Hang the blinds by pressing the tape where they are attached.

If you purchased a ready-made curtain, but it does not fit your window, then its size can be reduced. In order to shorten them in width, you will need to cut the roll, the canvas and the bottom rail. It is much easier to cut the fabric to length. The fabric is cut with ordinary scissors under a ruler, and then the bottom rail is attached to it.

Installation of cassette blinds

Cassette blinds are also attached with tape. In order to install them, you must:

  1. Print the product.
  2. Degrease the place of attachment to the window frame.
  3. Attach the cassette to the attachment point and lower the fabric to the bottom position.
  4. Mark the location where the cassette is attached with a pencil.
  5. Remove the protective film from the tape attached to the back of the cassette.
  6. Place the cassette on the frame, press and hold for a few seconds.
  7. Carefully remove the protective tape from the top edge of the metal fabric guides on both sides.
  8. Install the guides into the groove of the curtain body cassette and press down.
  9. Gradually removing the protective layer of tape, press the guides parallel to the frame bead.
  10. Do the same on the other side.
  11. Install a limiter.

Vertical

Vertical curtains can be attached in three ways:

  • in a window opening;
  • to the wall above the window;
  • to the ceiling.
They can have left-hand, right-hand and central control. Below you will find instructions on how to install vertical rigid curtains yourself.

In the window opening

To calculate the dimensions, you need to measure the width of the window opening and subtract 1-1.5 cm. Measure the height of the opening and subtract 1.5-2 cm. Measurements must be taken 5-7 cm deep into the opening, since it usually narrows. To make sure that after installing the blinds the sash will open, you need to measure the distance from the top edge of the sash to the upper slope of the installation point of the cornice. The distance must be at least 4.5 cm. Otherwise, you will have to measure into the overlay. Since the window may be uneven, measurements of width and height must be made at three points.

You can attach vertical blinds to a window opening in this way:

  1. Mark the attachment points.
  2. Drill holes.
  3. Install brackets.
  4. Insert the curtain rod into the special grooves on the holders and snap the locks into place.
  5. Install fabric.
  6. Insert weights.
  7. Secure the bottom chain.

Above the windows

To calculate the size, add at least 18-20 cm on each side to the width of the window opening. You will also need to measure the distance from the ceiling to the upper corner of the slope. You should retreat at least 10 cm from the upper corner of the slope. Measurements with fastening to the ceiling are made by subtracting 1-2 cm from the distance “ceiling - window sill”, “ceiling - floor” - 4-7 cm.
