Installing a sink in the kitchen - do it yourself, reliably and firmly

One of the indispensable attributes of any kitchen is the sink. It is required to the same extent as a stove (gas or electric). But installing a sink in the kitchen with your own hands is much easier than connecting a stove, if you know the basic instructions and the typical secrets of such work.

  1. Different sinks are needed, different sinks are important
  2. How to assemble a kitchen sink - install a cabinet
  3. How to install an overhead sink on a cabinet - brief instructions
  4. Installing a sink in the kitchen - do-it-yourself mortise installation

Indeed, kitchen sinks are produced in a wide range of products, which can make your eyes wide open in a specialized plumbing store. Kitchen sinks can be divided into at least six categories:

  • Wall-mounted, mortise and overhead sinks. The hanging option is now rare; it is more relevant for communal apartments and government institutions than for modern renovations. But inset and overmount sinks compete with each other in popularity; their long-term reliability and aesthetic appeal are comparable;
  • Sinks made of stainless steel alloys, chrome-plated or nickel-plated, sinks made of natural granite or porcelain stoneware, artificial stone, acrylic and even glass (!). However, due to practicality, 90% of all models are made of stainless steel and representative porcelain stoneware;
  • Sinks are angular and standard, round, oval, square, rectangular and shaped. The more intricate the shape of the sink, the more difficult it is to give it impeccable cleanliness and maintain a sparkling shine on a daily basis. After all, the sink is used not for beauty in the living room, but for mundane household needs in the kitchen;
  • By design, a distinction is made between ordinary single sinks and sinks with two bowls (same or different sizes, same or different shapes, etc.). There are convenient models with water overflow from one bowl to another;
  • According to the location of the mixer - on the wall or on the sink itself (the first option is rare);
  • According to the availability of additional options - the ability to install a water filter, outlets for connecting a washing machine, automatic valves for adjusting the drain, additional taps for connecting garden hoses, etc.

Stainless steel sinks have gained overwhelming popularity due to their reasonable price, durable functionality, compatibility with a wide variety of kitchen renovations, and ease of sanitization.

You can check the quality of the steel alloy of the sink right in the store - an ordinary flat magnet will stick to it very firmly, but with bad steel the magnet will “fly off” at the slightest vibration.

Granite and steel sinks are available in surface-mounted and inset versions; installing a sink in the kitchen with your own hands is possible for both. However, first we need to take care of the furniture base of our installation efforts.

2 How to assemble a sink in the kitchen - installing a cabinet

Recessed and overhead sinks are installed in cabinets and cabinets, with opening (less often sliding) doors in the front and an empty opening in the back. The assembly of these elements of a kitchen set has its own characteristic features. The fact is that they do not have internal bulkheads; they can interfere with the connection of sewerage and water pipes. This means that there will be no additional stiffeners inside the cabinet. If a countertop sink is installed, even the countertop is missing; it is replaced by a steel sink panel.

The assembly of the sink cabinet should be much more reliable and durable than other parts of the kitchen set. It needs to be installed on special supports, because... Even with the best sealing, water leaks are possible. It wouldn’t hurt to treat the material itself with water-repellent compounds. Inside the bedside table, it is necessary to provide fastenings for tightening jumpers - they are installed after connecting the sink to the communications for the strength of the entire structure. The lintels themselves can be made from flat and thick planks, which will serve as additional mini-shelves inside the cabinet.

3 How to install an overhead sink on a cabinet - brief instructions

The overhead option for installing a kitchen sink can be ordinary or “slide-in”. In the latter case, the sink itself is equipped with curved slides on the side and front sides, and special grooves are provided on the bedside table. After you have successfully assembled a sink in the kitchen, all that remains is to slide the sink into these grooves, move the structure to the wall - and you can connect the communications.

If you use a direct overhead mounting option, you will have to seal all joints. High-quality waterproof sealant combines the properties of glue and a protective waterproof composition. The upper perimeter of the open cabinet is generously coated with this composition; all that remains is to precisely place the sink itself on top.

A large and heavy overhead sink cannot be installed using sealing adhesive alone!

Otherwise, one day it will fall inside the cabinet along with the dishes, destroying the sewer and breaking off the pressure water hoses. Negative impressions from such an accident will be available to both you and your neighbors below. As well as eliminating the plumbing collapse and renovating two rooms from the personal budget. How to install an overhead sink on a cabinet without the risk of such an incident? Using auxiliary bars or internal sheathing.

Simple overhead sinks are usually equipped with additional fasteners. Massive bars, precisely screwed to the wrong side of the cabinet, are suitable as such. It is necessary to accurately mark the bottom edge of the pre-installed (without glue!) sink and build an internal sheathing along this line. Then the sink will rest on auxiliary bars, and not on the thin end of the bedside table. The operation is similar to hidden installation of sheathing. only in the final stage is it supplemented with adhesive sealing of the joint between metal and wood.

4 Installing a sink in the kitchen - do-it-yourself mortise installation

Before attaching a metal sink to the cabinet using the mortise method, you need to make sure that the cabinet is strong and that the entire structure can be accurately installed in the installation opening. Experiment with moving the cabinet in advance - after fixing the sink you will only have to do this once. After connecting the sewerage and water supply, the cabinet with the sink should stand like a glove, without distortions or vibrations.

How to install a sink in the kitchen with your own hands - step-by-step diagram

Step 1: Marking

Most mortise sinks are sold with a ready-made template; it acts as a packaging container. It is enough to cut out such a template from cardboard and attach it to the countertop at the location of the sink - and the contour of the seat is ready.

If there is no template, you will have to make it yourself. To do this, it is better to use thick cardboard (for example, from a TV or monitor). After measuring the inside of the sink, transfer this measurement to the cardboard surface and cut off a few centimeters more. It is better to cut a piece of cardboard several times than to look for a new piece.

Step 2: Location

The proverb about the need to measure seven times before the first cut is very relevant for our work. You can move the finished template around the tabletop easily and freely - until you start sawing right through it. So consider how the tap will open, where the filter will be, how kitchen utensils will be positioned, etc.

The cardboard template should be traced as evenly and accurately as possible. To do this, attach it to the tabletop with ordinary tape and draw one thin line with a pencil. After which the “cardboard assistant” peels off and goes into waste paper; we will no longer need it. We cover the perimeter of the future hole from the outside with masking tape for 8-12 cm in order to prevent it from being damaged by mechanical tools.

Step 3: Drill and saw

Yes, yes, the first mechanical tool will be a drill, not a saw. A drill with a diameter of 2 mm is selected and several closely spaced holes are drilled in the place where it is convenient to start cutting out the contour. The holes are connected into a single groove using a chisel.

It is convenient to saw the tabletop with a wood jigsaw. Just don’t forget to stock up on extra blades - thick tabletops are difficult to saw, and the blade is likely to break if it deviates slightly from the vertical. Take your time and move the jigsaw confidently - it is more difficult to correct a crooked cut than to immediately cut a hole along a plumb line, with a strictly perpendicular cut.

Step 4: Complete the installation

Apply sealant to the end of the fresh mounting hole and insert the sink tightly. We hold the sink under load for 10 to 60 seconds (depending on the type of sealing compound). Carefully remove excess glue from the outside and inside of the sink and wait several hours until the sealant has completely hardened. We connect hoses, pipes, sewerage, install a faucet and use the new sink for your pleasure.

Today we will show you how to use MDF boards and mosaics to make an attractive vanity unit that can be installed in the bathroom or kitchen.

To do this you will need the following materials:

  • universal glue (latex based), it is moisture resistant;

First you need to make a template from a piece of paper.

Options for kitchen cabinets under the sink, their pros and cons

To make it easier, place the shell on paper and trace its outline.

Using a paper sample, mark the slab of the required size.

Then, using a drill, drill four holes. They are necessary in order to cut an opening under the sink with a jigsaw.

For reliability, it is better to use two MDF boards.

Before installing them together with the sink in place, it is necessary to make a hole in the cabinet for communications.

Now you can install the finished surface using corner fasteners and self-tapping screws. This part of the work can be entrusted to men, but the next stage can be done by women.

All that remains is to cover the surface with mosaic tiles.

Apply it in small sections, as the glue hardens quickly (10-15 minutes).

A few more touches.

And this is what the mosaic looks like after grouting.

Reference

MDF boards are made from fine wood chips by dry pressing at high temperature and pressure.

They are distinguished by the fact that during the production process they are given special properties, such as water resistance, biostability and fire resistance.

Fiberboards began to be produced in America in 1966. In 1997, the production process was established in Russia. But the main global producer at present is, of course, China.

MDF boards are an inexpensive and easily processed material. They have a homogeneous structure that lends itself well to processing, which is why they are recommended to be used in the manufacture of elements for bathrooms and kitchens.

Prices are rising every day, and now, in order to renovate the kitchen and update the kitchen set, you will have to invest heavily. However, you can save money, not only on repairs yourself, but also on kitchen furniture.

Today we will look at how to make a cabinet for a sink with your own hands as cheaply as possible.

The sink is one of the main elements in the kitchen. If you decide to assemble the kitchen set yourself, then this element must be prepared first.

According to our design, the width of the sink cabinet in the kitchen is 75 cm. The doors will open as standard, i.e. We will install them on hinges, not on rollers.

The project assumes that a single tabletop will be installed along the entire length of the kitchen unit, which is why the upper part of the cabinet is not manufactured. At the same time, we will buy doors and the front part of the shelf to speed up the process and make the cabinet under the kitchen sink more attractive. However, a cabinet for a sink can be assembled cheaper if you make these elements yourself. But at the same time you will have to seriously work on your appearance. We will consider these points separately below in the text.

Below is a drawing of a kitchen cabinet under the sink with the indicated dimensions of width, length and height, which are 75, 60 and 87 cm, respectively.

In order to assemble a cabinet for a sink with your own hands, we will need the following tools:

  • Tape measure, pencil
  • Screwdriver or cross-head screwdriver
  • Screws
  • Drill
  • Sandpaper
  • Paint brushes (if you will be painting the cabinet under the sink)

Also, in the process of assembling a cabinet for a kitchen sink, the following materials will be required:

  • Back panel pressboard
  • Plywood sheet for crossbars
  • Chipboard sheet with a thickness of 12 mm (optional with cladding) for side walls
  • Facing tape to match the color of the chipboard cladding
  • 2 doors (if you don’t make it yourself)
  • Front panel for the top shelf (if you don’t make it yourself)
  • Guides and rollers for the top shelf
  • Handle for top shelf and 2 door handles
  • 4 hinges for installing doors
  • Wood paint (in case of using chipboard without cladding)

So, let's look at how to assemble a cabinet for a sink with your own hands.

The first step in assembling a cabinet for a sink with your own hands in the kitchen is preparing the side walls.

As a material for the manufacture of these elements, you can choose a chipboard, preferably lined on one side. Choose the color and texture of the cladding to suit your taste. In our project we will use a white silver chipboard and a matching color facing tape.

Chipboard with cladding

If, however, you decide to use a chipboard without cladding to save money, then you will need to think about the color scheme for the future cabinet under the kitchen sink and stock up on paint.

Chipboard without cladding

The dimensions of the side walls should be 87 by 60 cm. Moreover, in the lower part of the front walls it is necessary to cut a rectangle measuring 6 by 11 cm.

If in your kitchen there is a floor plinth installed along the wall along which the kitchen unit will be located, then it is recommended to cut the prepared side walls at an angle to ensure a tight fit of the cabinet under the sink to the wall.

The second step is to attach the crossbars to the prepared side walls.

For crossbars, you can take ordinary plywood with a width of at least 12 cm. There is no point in heavily processing and preparing these crossbars, since they will not be visible and hidden from view.

There are two ways to fasten the crossbars and walls.

The first method is to use steel corners for furniture - two for each joint plane. The second is to screw the screws directly into the crossbar, but in this case you will have to use thicker plywood or even a chipboard as a crossbar.

At the same time, to hide the caps of the fasteners, you will need linings to match the color of the walls.

The third step in assembling a do-it-yourself sink cabinet for the kitchen is attaching the lower base. It is best to choose the same material as for the side walls, i.e. Chipboard board. From it you need to cut a rectangle measuring 70 by 50 cm. It is best to secure the lower base by screwing the screws directly into the crossbars fixed at the previous stage.

At the same time, for ease of use of the cabinet under the sink, the caps should be recessed below the surface by drilling a small recess for them, which after installation should be covered with wooden filler.

The fourth step, one of the last in assembling a cabinet for a sink with your own hands, is to attach the upper crossbars to secure the upper part of the cabinet for a sink.

The first crossbar will be positioned vertically and fastened so as not to protrude beyond the perimeter of the cabinet under the sink. It is to this cross member that the back wall will be attached. The second cross member will be located, on the contrary, horizontally. Just like in the second step, we recommend using chipboard rather than plywood for the crossbar for ease of installation. The thickness of the slab will allow you to fasten the elements of the kitchen cabinet without the use of additional fasteners.

If the chipboard panels were chosen without cladding, then it’s time to paint all the elements of the cabinet.

The fifth step in assembling a cabinet for a kitchen sink is fixing the back wall of the cabinet.

This wall will not perform any functions other than visual isolation of the cabinet and will not bear the load. In this regard, pressed cardboard can be chosen as the material for this element. In addition, in such a wall it will be easier to cut holes for connecting communications.

The sixth step is to separately assemble the front frame. The dimensions of the top shelf and doors can be arbitrary depending on personal preferences. The dimensions selected for this project are shown in the drawing below.

The remaining uncovered ends of the chipboard side walls at the bottom of the cabinet should be sealed with end plastic tape using an iron.

The seventh step is to install the top shelf on casters.

We will not consider the shelf assembly process in this article due to the same type of process for all products; the main thing is to take into account the actual dimensions. You can either make the front panel of the shelf yourself, but then it will be quite simple, or you can order it from a company with a more interesting profile, like the doors.

The eighth step is attaching the cabinet doors under the sink.

We choose the pattern, profile, texture and color of the doors according to your taste. In our project, we chose simple doors with a rectangular interior. Such doors can even be bought in an online store, and are most often called “Facade to body”. If desired, you can even choose doors with grooved glass. It all depends on your taste and budget.

The hinges determine how wide the doors will open and whether they will warp. Hinges vary in opening angle and installation principle, and there are even models with closers. The choice of loops is a topic for a separate article.

And the final stage is to bring the appearance of the resulting do-it-yourself sink cabinet in the kitchen to a decent level.

The handles should be screwed to the doors and the front panel of the top shelf.

In our project, we attach not one, but two handles to the shelf. Moreover, we select the color of the handles in contrast to the color of the cabinet itself under the sink.
So, here we look at how to assemble a cabinet for a sink with your own hands. Now that other elements of the kitchen set are ready, it will be possible to install a single countertop and sink.

DIY bedside table - easy to make and practical

A bedside table is a diverse concept. This can be a bedside container for newspapers and a tea mug, or a stand for a huge TV with built-in speakers and an electronic rotating system to attract the viewer's attention.

Such a simple concept - and an endless number of execution options. Making a bedside table with your own hands is quite simple, but it is important to decide on the necessary design. My friend needed a kitchen cabinet with one top drawer.

If you please.

Appearance of the manufactured bedside table

To make a bedside table you need

Here I give a list of tools that it would be better for everyone to keep in constant readiness, along with a fishing rod, favorite gun and chess:

  • Drill-driver.

    A battery-powered one would be optimal if the household also has a hammer drill.

  • Set of drills. In this case - on wood.
  • Set of bits. If you want to assemble the furniture yourself, the kit should include a bit, which is a hexagon for confirmations.
  • Hinge cutter 35 mm in diameter.
  • Iron.
  • Roulette.
  • Pencil.
  • A carpenter's tool called a "right angle", with a measuring ruler.
  • Sandpaper, dry rag.

I’ll immediately note about the iron and other objects that were not clear at first.

Since you will be forced to order cutting on the side (a chipboard sheet measuring 1830x2440 mm is the smallest), it makes sense to save on gluing the edges. Now on sale is a 0.5 mm thick melamine edge in the color of the material, which is easy to glue on yourself. Since it has an adhesive base, just attach it to the desired end with the beautiful side up and iron it with a heated iron.

Using a dry cloth, press the still hot edge to achieve good adhesion. Excess edges are removed with a dull knife and the edges are processed with sandpaper.

Detailing the bedside table

A cabinet made with your own hands may differ in content, functionality and appearance.

This largely depends on the amount you are willing to spend on fittings. Here I am writing details of the simplest and cheapest cabinet. Drawer without runners, facades - laminated chipboard.

  • 772x500 – 2 pcs., sides of the cabinet.
  • 368x500 – 2 pcs., bottom and shelf.
  • 368x100 – 3 pcs., base and two upper strips.
  • 480x110 – 2 pcs., drawer sides.
  • 334x110 – 2 pcs., box front and back walls.
  • 150x395 – drawer front.
  • 515x395 – cabinet door.

All dimensions are for chipboard with a thickness of 16 mm.

We take a special kitchen tabletop, 28 mm thick.

Its size is 525x400 mm.

Fiberboard for the back wall of the cabinet and the bottom of the drawer:

  • 670x395 mm – rear wall.
  • 475x365 mm – bottom of the box.

I have already written how to glue the edge, now it’s time to prepare the parts for assembly. The main fasteners for us are confirmations, for which we need to drill holes. We drill into the plane with a diameter of 8 mm, into the end of the parts - with a diameter of 5 mm.

The figure shows which parts are drilled into the end and which into the plane - simply based on the general design of the cabinet.

Nightstand assembly diagram

List of required accessories

A do-it-yourself bedside table is also our business card to everyone who doubted our abilities, so even in an inexpensive version, fasteners need to be taken as seriously as possible.

We buy from a furniture fittings store:

  • Confirmats 5x70 – 22 pieces. It is enough to screw the tie strips and the plinth one confirmat on each side.
  • Self-tapping screws 4x30 – packaging. They will come in handy for other jobs around the house, but specifically here they are needed to screw the tabletop to the top slats, and the drawer front to the front wall of the drawer box.

    All this is screwed up from the inside.

  • Self-tapping screws 4x16 – packaging. This is a fastener for hinges and hardboard (fibreboard). You should buy it with a hidden cap, and also deepen it into the bottom of the drawer so as not to scratch the shelf.
  • Furniture hinges – 2 pcs.

    Which sink cabinet to choose?

    Since our cutter is 35 mm in diameter, we buy the corresponding hinges.

  • Furniture handles – 2 pcs. For the front of the drawer, it is better to buy additional screws for handles, 35 mm long.

Assembly diagram of our cabinet drawer

Making a bedside table

It is better to coordinate the production of bedside tables of this model with friends or acquaintances - simply because two and a half of them can be made from a sheet of chipboard.

Assembly is so simple that you can start selling “extra” cabinets. To fully satisfy potential customers and your own, screw furniture legs, the so-called “hooves,” onto the bottom sides of the furniture.

They will help you position the cabinet on an uneven floor. Adjustable legs of this type can also be found in specialized stores that sell furniture fittings.

Ready bedside table

In general terms, we have already understood how to make a bedside table with our own hands - it remains to take into account two very important technical points.

  • Sampling for loops. One constant should be remembered: The distance from the edge of the facade to the center of the hinge hole is always 22 mm.

    Naturally, for hinges with a seat size of 35 mm. Above and below the door it is usually marked at a level of 60-80 mm - this is not critical if there are no design features. Then you can simply attach the facade with screwed hinges to the sidewall at the desired height and secure it to the body.

  • Right angles.

    When assembling a drawer or cabinet box, always check the geometric correctness of the resulting parallelepiped. Otherwise, the product will turn out to be lopsided and with poorly opening facades.

That's all, good luck with your work.

You can use steel pipe to make a solid base under the sink that will last longer. The stand is especially suitable for summer cottages.
A stand under the washbasin can also be purchased at the store. However, there are practically no steel structures.

Wooden and ceramic sinks are not suitable in some cases. The steel structure can be easily used in suburban areas, utility areas and manufacturing.

Advantages and disadvantages of steel drains

Steel under sinks, well protected from moisture, can withstand a very long time. They are resistant to high temperatures and adverse external conditions. For example, such laundering cannot be destroyed by chemicals.

The stand can be made from old pipes, especially if the craftsman has no special requirements for the aesthetic component.

The equipment can be placed under a sink made of steel pipes. During sanitation of sanitary equipment, this design will not cause problems. Removing this product is very easy.

The downside to steel gutters is that they often don't look as nice as ceramic or wood ones.

Of course, a trained craftsman can make it attractive, with extra finishing.

Hull under the flow of your hand. 6 options.

Wood, as well as plywood and particle boards, are suitable for finishing the frame. If necessary, you can use steel sheets.

List and materials

To make a steel washbasin, you will need:

— pipes are cut to the dimensions indicated in the drawing;
— welding;
- bend;
— paints and other protective compounds.

Sink installation

The sink is assembled in several stages.

First, you must take preliminary measurements to purchase the required number of pipes. Measure the height of the frame and its dimensions. To accurately determine the volume of the stand, the craftsman must have a sink that will be mounted on the frame.

The height of the frame is determined individually.

Usually it is 70 - 85 cm. This is the optimal height for an adult. If the skeleton is lower or higher, the use of a washbasin is inappropriate. The leader must also maintain the position of the mixer.

One thing to keep in mind is that the water does not fall to the ground and the flow from the faucet does not cause splashing.

Once the measurements are taken, it's time for the pipes. You can buy pipes already cut to the specified sizes. Suitable for stainless steel pipes. It is better to make the top of the abyss a single figure. This means that the hose is not cut, but rather bent using a pipe bender. This will make the frame look much better. After purchasing the hose, you must first wrap the top of the frame and weld that part of the foot onto the stand.

If you just weld the legs together but don't connect your bottom ends, the stand will be unstable.

It may even break with occasional falls. Therefore, the lower parts of the frame must also be connected to the pipes. Now the worst work is over and you can start cosmetic decoration. The stitch must be finished and the design must be colored.

If necessary, you can further complete the structure. For example, a steel frame can protect elements for fastening wooden sheets.

The most economical material would be chipboard. These sheets are cheap and durable. Drywall will not work in this case because it is too sensitive to moisture. Steel plates can be welded to the sink directly on the frame. We must not forget the door and consider the possibilities of access to the pipe.

In the production of washbasins, the stand is usually not subjected to special coatings other than painting.

In a commercial environment, decorative finishes do not last long. You can come up with a more attractive option for doing laundry at home.

Unfortunately, the realities of life for the average resident of Russia are such that kitchens in most houses, and especially apartments, are of modest size. They are more or less able to satisfy the needs of a not too spoiled family.

Design of a small kitchen with a sink by the window

If standard furniture samples are suitable, then there will be fewer difficulties in equipping the kitchen. You just need to go to a furniture store and choose an option that suits your price and taste. In the event that you are not looking for easy ways or space, for example, there is not enough space for a cabinet with a sink, then a decent way out of this situation would be to make a sink with your own hands that matches the area and your needs.

Trapezoidal cabinet with a round sink in the corner of a small kitchen

There are a number of significant advantages to creating a sink cabinet with your own hands.

  • An opportunity to save money by applying your skills in working with wooden elements, tools and plumbing.
  • Create a product of the required size, shape, fill it with additional shelves on which to place household chemicals, brushes and various necessary small items, and provide space for a trash can under the shelf.
  • To make a cabinet, use any available material left over from the renovation that you have - wooden blocks, simple or laminated chipboard, ready-made shelves from cabinets, screws, corners.

Design and construction- which is easier to do

When arranging a kitchen set, we have to build on the square footage we have. The arrangement of furniture can be different: in one or two rows, in the letter “G”, in the letter “P”, or have a complex shape that needs to be built to suit the personal configuration of the kitchen.

The arrangement of kitchen furniture directly depends on the location of the stove and sink. When doing it yourself, you also need to pay attention to which shape of the kitchen cabinet for the sink will be easier to make with your own hands. Sinks come in the following forms.

The sink is an important element of the installation

The structure of the niches is of great importance in installing a cabinet under the sink. They are installed in several ways.

DIY sink cabinet: necessary materials and tools

Laminated chipboard is rightfully considered the most popular material for making a sink cabinet with your own hands, since it is less susceptible to moisture.

Chipboard with cladding

If you choose this material, you must prepare a special edge tape in advance to avoid evaporation of the aldehyde resins contained in the chipboard. It is important to understand that their evaporation is harmful to the health of residents.

Chipboard without facing for subsequent painting

An excellent combination of price and quality is MDF board. It is denser than chipboard and the fastenings hold better.

Laminated MDF is better suited for furniture due to its properties

Laminated chipboard or MDF coatings can imitate almost any material

Another option is solid wood, but it is more expensive, absorbs moisture and is difficult to maintain.

Solid wood for furniture making

When you decide on the main material, you need to prepare additional components.

  • Pressed cardboard for the back wall.
  • Plywood for crossbars.
  • Facing tape in the color of the cabinet.
  • Handles, hinges, corners and screws.

To bring your ideas to life, the following tools will help you: .

  • Pencil, ruler or tape measure.
  • Drill, screwdriver.
  • Phillips screwdriver.
  • Saw or jigsaw.
  • Internal corners, hinges for doors.

Tools and accessories for assembling a cabinet with your own hands

Manufacturing process: step-by-step instructions

The process of making a cabinet for a sink with your own hands should be divided into several stages.

  1. Preparation. We draw a drawing of the sink cabinet on paper, based on measurements taken on site and your design wishes.

    Model of a kitchen cabinet under the sink with the specified dimensions of width, length and height

  2. Manufacturing of parts. Following the drawing data, we cut out the side walls, bottom and doors from plywood. In the case where the sink is countertop, a countertop is not needed. If the sink is mortise, transfer the dimensions to the countertop canvas and cut it out with a jigsaw. The remaining parts of the cabinet are also cut out with a jigsaw, and if you don’t have one, then using a hacksaw for metal will be more correct, since it causes fewer chips. Sand the edges with sandpaper.

    Sawing parts for the cabinet of the required sizes

    Side walls for sink cabinet

  3. Assembly of frame parts. We start by attaching the walls of the cabinet with crossbars. This can be done in two ways - fastened with internal steel corners or connected with screws, then you need to take thicker plywood. Screw the bottom onto the screws.

    Attaching the crossbars to the prepared side walls

    Attaching the lower base by driving screws directly into the fixed crossbars

  4. To fix the top of the cabinet we use the upper crossbars. The back wall will be attached to one of them. We make it thin, out of cardboard, and nail it onto small nails.

    Attaching the top crossbars to secure the top of the cabinet under the sink

    Fixing the back wall of the cabinet

  5. Installation of facades. We apply and mark the places where the hinges are attached. Drill holes for the hinges and install. Hung doors are adjustable in height. The selection of hinges should be taken seriously, since their wide opening depends on them and whether they will become loose over time.

    Assembly of the front frame according to the specified dimensions

    Fastening cabinet doors under the sink

  6. Decorate the appearance. If you need to paint, varnish, furniture film, screw in handles. On the inside of the door, attach a convenient pocket for a washcloth or other small items. To increase storage space, make a shelf. It should be easy to remove and put in place. To do this, a deep slot is cut from the wall in the middle, necessary for the passage of the sewer pipe. Place on bars secured with screws to the cabinet walls.

To extend the service life of the product, it should be raised above the floor, placed on legs or wheels, plastic or thick rubber heels.

How to improve the appearance of a chipboard cabinet

Exquisite version of a sink with a cabinet for the kitchen

Having made a sink cabinet from ordinary chipboard, one more step will be added to these steps - transforming the appearance and protecting yourself from harmful fumes.

  • Apply a thin layer of putty and smooth with a spatula. After this procedure, the surface will become smooth.
  • After the putty has dried, apply a primer.

Video: Assembling a kitchen cabinet

To create comfort and coziness in the house, everyone chooses more suitable furniture for themselves. Whatever the situation in the kitchen, it is almost impossible to do without a sink cabinet. Most people prefer to buy them in stores, but for those who like to make their own at home, making a sink cabinet with your own hands is quite possible. How to do it? And what you need to do? You will receive answers to these questions and more below.

Types of sink cabinets

Before you start making a sink cabinet, you need to understand its possible types and designs. Their varieties can be divided as follows:

Linear placement of cabinets involves installing the cabinet itself and other elements of the kitchen unit on the same area. In this case, the cabinet itself under the sink has a standard appearance and size (a rectangle 60 centimeters wide). In this case, the owner himself can decide on the length of this part of the kitchen furniture.

Do-it-yourself corner cabinets for sinks are usually trapezoidal, L-shaped and multi-faceted.

L-shaped models are considered very popular, since this design is considered the best option for any kitchen interior. Due to the fact that one of the side parts is shorter than the other, the cabinet itself is easy to get into. In such bedside tables it is recommended to install narrow rather than wide doors.

Trapezoidal sink cabinets have more space in the middle, but are also more complex in design. This type of cabinet is suitable for large sinks, for those that consist of several bowls.

Development of a cabinet model

Before you start working on creating a sink under the sink, you need to decide on its design, size and model. For a high-quality final result, you need to start with drawings that will help eliminate inconsistencies with the dimensions of parts and the furniture itself. When designing, it is important to take into account in detail the dimensions of the kitchen for which the cabinet is intended. It is important to pay attention to what will be located on both sides of the cabinet under the sink. Drawings must be drawn to scale. When developing the model, the presence of drawers for household products, shelves, etc. is indicated. The dimensions of the sink cabinet must correspond to the dimensions of the entire kitchen unit. The capacity, that is, the depth of the box itself, is selected individually by the master. The optimal sizes of cabinets for a DIY sink are: height - 800-850 mm, width from 300 - 1200 mm, depth 600 mm.

It is better to design a cabinet for a built-in sink; this will make your project more individual.

Selection of materials

The longevity of furniture depends on the material used in the manufacturing process. To make a sink cabinet you can use:

  • plastic;
  • natural wood;
  • Chipboard and MDF;
  • glass;
  • drywall, etc.

The most common material used in the manufacture of kitchen furniture (and not only) is fibreboard (chipboard). This fabric is quite moisture resistant, so it will be an excellent solution when it comes to materials for making a sink cabinet. In addition, the price of chipboard compared to other materials is quite reasonable.

MDF is a dense wood panel that is produced using high heat and a press. This type of production materials is considered natural and environmentally friendly. Why this material? MDF is a fairly dense and strong material in its structure, which is ready to retain its properties in the most humid and extreme environments. Of course, all the advantages of this finishing material affect its not-so-low price.

Furniture made from natural wood is considered elite. But this type of material is one of the most expensive and not everyone can afford it. Furniture made from natural wood undoubtedly has the best quality and durability.

Another material from which you can make a sink cabinet is stainless steel. The disadvantage of this finishing fabric is the possibility of rust during prolonged contact with water. If the master chooses stainless steel for his cabinet, then it is recommended to buy steel No. 202. This is an economy-class stainless steel that is used in mechanical engineering. Due to its properties, No. 202 is distinguished by its corrosion resistance.

To give the cabinet a unique decoration, many people use glass to make doors.

The project of preparing materials for making a sink cabinet with your own hands is one of the most important stages of work on a future product, on which the long-term suitability of the furniture depends.

Tools for work

In addition to the finishing material for manufacturing and installation, you will need the following necessary tools to make a sink cabinet with your own hands:

  • pencil;
  • screwdriver;
  • screwdrivers;
  • self-tapping screws;
  • roulette;
  • ruler;
  • glass cutter;
  • corners;
  • grinding wheel;
  • hexagon and many more etc.

Chipboard sink cabinet

The features of making a sink cabinet with your own hands directly depend on the material chosen for the work. The most common option is a cabinet made of chipboard. In order to avoid any issue with the color scheme of the cabinet, it is better to immediately purchase chipboard lined on one side. This cabinet model has the following measurements: width - 75 cm, length - 60 cm, height 87 cm. Additionally, a top shelf above the doors is designed in the cabinet. To speed up the work process, it is proposed to buy the doors and the front part of the cabinet separately, according to the dimensions. During operation, the doors will be attached using hinges.

All other components of the cabinet must be made according to measurements from finishing material and assembled like a construction kit. To ensure reliable suitability of the sink cabinet for making the back panel, it is suggested to use pressed cardboard.

A sheet of plywood is perfect for cross-sections. Actually, for the side walls we use a chipboard sheet with a 12 mm thick cladding. Additionally, you will need handles for doors and drawers. You need to prepare the following tools: saw, pencil, drill, tape measure, sandpaper, screws, cross screwdriver.

Using tools and pre-calculated dimensions, the components of the future cabinet are cut out of finishing materials. When all sides are ready, you can begin assembling the headset.

It is recommended to start by attaching the crossbars to the walls. This process can be done using special furniture corners or screws. Next, the lower base of the cabinet is attached. It is better to secure it with screws, while connecting the lower part directly to the transverse parts.

The upper crossbars should be secured carefully, since one part must be secured in a vertical position, and one (the one that goes to the door) in a horizontal position. The back wall of the cabinet is attached to the vertical crossbar, so it is very important that it does not protrude beyond the sink. It is worth remembering that the features of assembling and installing a cabinet under the sink with your own hands directly depend on the materials used in the work.

Why don’t they just use chipboard for structural parts?

This model uses plywood to make the crossbar, as this greatly simplifies installation work. Also, correctly selected materials for the design of the sink cabinet do not require additional fasteners.

For the back wall of the cabinet, pressed cardboard was chosen to facilitate the work of cutting out holes for water connections.

The top shelf of the bedside table is mounted on casters for reliable and more convenient protrusion. When installing a cabinet door, you need to choose the right hinges, which determine the process of opening and closing the cabinet. Cheap, low-quality elements soon begin to dangle and creak. When all the installation work is completed, all the handles and the door are attached, and the cabinet itself has a finished appearance, only then is a solid tabletop attached, for which the cabinet model has been developed. The final process is the installation of the sink itself. If all dimensions were correctly implemented into the work, then the quality will be confirmed by the perfect fit of the sink into the hole in the cabinet.

Finishing the sink cabinet made of chipboard

In the process of planning work on the manufacture of a cabinet for a sink and chipboard, it is necessary to take into account the finishing process of the material. How to make decoration for a cabinet with your own hands and what is needed for this? In this matter, you can give some simple recommendations.

The places where the screws were screwed in can be covered with special caps chosen to match the color of the kitchen set.

For trimmed areas on the cabinet under the sink, it is recommended to use furniture end tape. For non-professional craftsmen, the U-shaped end tape is considered the best option. It does not require additional interventions and is simply glued to the end of the chipboard.

Plasterboard sink cabinet

This option for a sink cabinet is one of the simplest. To make such a set, you need to buy moisture-resistant drywall, as well as profiles and screws. Having selected a place for the cabinet, we make a project based on measurements and get to work. Having made the parts for the future cabinet and prepared the necessary parts, you can begin assembling the structure. At the beginning of installation, a frame is assembled from profiles, which is sheathed with plasterboard. A cutout is made in the countertop for the sink. Particular attention should be paid to the finishing of the cabinet. To do this, it is recommended to use tiles, which will give the cabinet a rich, sophisticated look.

DIY corner cabinet

The main advantage of this design is considered to be the minimal space it takes up. Such models are recommended for use in small houses. For minimal material costs, the same chipboard is used. The main thing is not to make a mistake in designing the structure and take the measurements of future furniture as clearly as possible. The corner sink cabinet includes the following parts:

  • two sidewalls;
  • corner element;
  • ligaments;
  • doors.

The bottom for this model is manufactured in one unit. It is this prefabricated part that determines the dimensions of the structure. Two sidewalls are the height of the project. The back wall must have a hole for pipes. This part of the assembly must be carefully edged, otherwise the material will simply swell under the influence of moisture. Posterior and anterior ligaments are needed. Their function is to connect the upper parts of the furniture. Their number varies depending on the model of the cabinet.

When making a cabinet door with your own hands, it is very important to take the correct measurements. Millimeters are important in this matter. The master himself decides whether the cabinet will have a solid door or two small ones. If desired, you can add adjustable legs to the furniture.

Installation of structures under the sink

Options for installing structures under a sink with your own hands depend on their shape, material and model. Installation of the cabinet under the sink begins after assembly. For reliability, it is fixed with dowels and bolted. If the cabinet is made from a material that cannot be drilled, then silicone is used. Next, the water installation is connected. In this process, care must be taken to seal the equipment. Masters claim that installing a cabinet under a sink is not such a difficult job and requires basic manly skills.

To clearly see how to make a sink cabinet with your own hands, we recommend watching the video:

Today we have prepared an article on the topic: “how to make a kitchen sink base with your own hands,” and Anatoly Belyakov will tell you the nuances and comment on the main mistakes.

  • Sink base for the kitchen: setting up a workplace

    When arranging furniture in the kitchen, you should definitely think about what kind of cabinet will be under the sink. This piece of kitchen furniture is called the underframe. This bedside table does not have a back wall; the kitchen sink is installed directly into it.

    It is almost impossible to do without this item. After all, otherwise, there will simply be nowhere to wash the dishes. In the cabinet itself you can hide cleaning products, a trash can and other kitchen utensils from prying eyes. Regardless of whether you are going to purchase a cabinet separately or together with a kitchen set, you need to learn to understand the features of the materials, sizes and functions of the kitchen sink cabinet.

    The dimensions of the sink cabinets in the kitchen are selected individually, depending on the size of the kitchen. Alternatively, the size of the underframe will be based on the size of the kitchen sink itself. In the latter case, it can serve not only as a place for washing kitchen utensils, but also as a countertop. Then the main condition is that it be flush with the rest of the set.

    Typically, kitchen countertops have standard sizes. They can be 50 cm, 60 cm, 80 cm and 120 cm wide. If the base is small, you need to choose a sink with one bowl and small sides. Small cabinets usually have hinged doors. Larger bases accommodate double sinks or a sink with a rack for drying dishes.

    If the inside of the underframe is equipped with a cold and hot water supply and a drain, then it comes without internal filling.

    The two most common materials from which sink bases are made are:

    Both materials are made using identical methods using dry production from wood fibers that are processed in a special way. The difference between them is that MDF is a material made using advanced fiberboard technology.

    It has a composition closer to wood, which means it will cost a little more. All materials used to make sink bases are moisture resistant. However, the material can swell and dry out at the joints between the countertop and the sink. To avoid this, manufacturers specially glue it with a special sheet of plastic. Sometimes solid bases are made of stainless steel. But metal vanity units have an unassuming appearance. They are rarely preferred.

    Undermount sinks are used for solid kitchen countertops. A base with a built-in sink will look harmonious. If you do everything according to the rules, you can once and for all avoid swelling and leaks at the joints between the underframe and the sink. Such kitchen sinks literally “cut” into the underframe. To do this, a hole is cut out on the countertop for the future sink, which is first outlined and a template is made. The tabletop will be sawn along it. Afterwards, sealant is applied along the edges of the hole under the sink. With the help of clamps, even a corner sink is tightly attached to the countertop. The advantages of mortise sinks often include their hygiene and ease of installation.

    Stainless steel sinks can be used as mortise sinks, but with granite sinks you will have to tinker.

    The version of the underframe with an overhead sink is a little outdated. But he still does not lose his popularity. The stainless steel sink is placed on the underframe to form a countertop. It is suitable for free-standing countertops, which may not be part of the kitchen unit itself. The overhead sink is fixed to the underframe with special L-shaped fasteners.

    To protect the surface of the cabinet from moisture and cracking, silicone sealant is applied to the wide edge of the sink.

    It is believed that an underframe with an overhead sink is a budget option for arranging space in the kitchen. The right solution is an underframe with a built-in sink. But cabinets with overhead sinks have many undeniable advantages. They are spacious and perfectly complement the kitchen design. It's easier to assemble it yourself. Even beginners do not experience any difficulties with this. An overhead sink can be removed from the underframe for various plumbing and repair work; an underframe with an overmount sink costs several times less than an underframe with a built-in sink.

    Sink cabinet all advantages:

    The optimal depth of the underframe is 40 centimeters. If you plan to place wall cabinets above the sink, then the depth of the underframe should increase to 55-60 centimeters. All corner bases have standard dimensions:
    • Door: 0.5 cm, 0.45 cm, 0.4 cm, 0.35 cm, 0.3 cm.
    • Module: 1m, 0.95 cm, 0.9 cm, 0.85 cm, 0.8 cm, 0.75 cm, 0.7 cm, 0.65 cm.
  • What is a kitchen sink base? Logic dictates that this is what is under the table. In our case, this is an object located under the kitchen sink - that is, a cabinet that serves as a support for it. In modern furniture sets it is almost impossible to find it without a tabletop - this is a temporary option or a solution for a summer residence. But the principle of its manufacture is practically no different from assembling a similar cabinet - the difference is in size and nothing more. That is why this article on our website will be useful for anyone who is going to design a kitchen set on their own. The principle is the same, and we will get acquainted with it in this article.

    Kitchen sink base: a few words about sizes

    The beauty of the base cabinet for an overhead sink lies in the complete correspondence of its dimensions to the dimensions of the sink itself - this moment greatly simplifies the process of its manufacture. Here we can safely say that we are talking about a standard product and it will be difficult to miss. To be specific and speak in numbers, the depth of such a cabinet is usually 600mm, the width depends on and can be 400, 500, 600, 800, 1000 and even 1200mm, and the height is standard and is 850mm from the floor to its top edge.

    Sink base photo

    It’s simple, but not very simple – it’s not quite a rectangular box, consisting of three or four planks. In most cases, shelves and even drawers are built into the middle of the cabinet, which you will also have to calculate if you are wondering how to make a base for a sink with your own hands? The principle of their design is also quite simple, and if you understand it, then it will be possible to make any one without exception. There are few main nuances that can lead to an error - only two.

    1. The thickness of the material used - sometimes people forget about it and, as a result, they don’t get exactly what they wanted. Sometimes even such errors are critical. It must be remembered that if one board is attached between two others, then in order to obtain the required size on the outside of the product, the thickness of these two boards taken together must be subtracted from the length of the board inserted between them.
    2. The next point concerns the doors. Every millimeter is important here - you can’t just take, measure a rectangle and cut two doors according to it. At a minimum, they will not close after installation - you need to take into account the gap between the two halves of the doors and the same gap between the doors of adjacent cabinets. The gap between the door and the sink is also important. In general, the result is the following picture - the resulting actual size of the doors needs to be reduced in width by 4mm and in height by 2mm. Only in this case will the doors work adequately.

    There are other nuances associated with the size of furniture parts. The principle remains the same, especially when it comes to moving parts. Remember that millimeters are very important here, and everything will be fine (you won't have to redo it). To make it easier to understand the solution to the question of how to make a cabinet under the sink, watch the video on its assembly.

    What to make a kitchen sink base from with your own hands

    You can make a base for a sink from different materials, but in most cases, furniture chipboard is the cheapest material, which allows you to make a nice bedside table with your own hands at a relatively low cost. You can, of course, opt for natural wood, but processing it will require some specialized equipment. In addition, such cabinets are temporary or for a summer residence, so there is no point in making a beautiful wooden thing. Although, who knows - if the dacha is decent, and you are a fan of making things with your own hands and have the necessary skills and tools, then why not? Let's take a closer look at the materials that can be used to make the underframe.

    In principle, simpler methods for manufacturing products of this type can be used. A cheap and cheerful option is simply four supports connected around the perimeter by a board. You can use anything as supports - metal pipes, wooden beams, and even just dried tree trunks. It all depends on your aesthetic requirements, imagination and skillful hands. In fact, such a product can even be woven from wicker.

    The principle of making a bedside table: detailed instructions

    Since we have come to the conclusion that the most optimal material in terms of price and manufacturing technology for a cabinet under the table is chipboard, then we will consider it as the starting material. The technology, as mentioned above, is quite simple and it looks like this.

    Now we can safely say that the kitchen table is ready and can be installed in the designated place. True, it remains to install the handles on the doors, but these are trifles, and you will deal with this issue yourself. In this way, with the right approach to the matter and competent cutting of furniture chipboard, you can also make a corner base for a sink - it is important to understand the principle itself, and assembling any cabinet furniture will not seem too difficult to you.

    And to conclude the topic, I will add only one thing - or rather, I will remind you that 80% of success in this matter depends on the correct cutting and quality of processing of the ends, which, if not properly processed, can significantly spoil the appearance of the product.

    This is how you make a kitchen sink base with your own hands. If this work seems too complicated to you, then part of it can be delegated to special enterprises engaged in cutting furniture chipboard - all you have to do is assemble the cabinet and enjoy the work done.
