What is a loft style table

A table is a necessary piece of furniture at home and at work. The horizontal surface, raised above the floor level, ensures a comfortable stay for a person in a sitting position. Throughout the history of mankind, this accessory of existence has undergone various design changes: at first it was quite primitive, and later it even became a luxury item.

In the 60s of the last century, in the wake of alternating economic crises Empty production areas appeared. The premises began to be occupied by various creative associations, which filled the interior with homemade household items. This is how it was born designer style loft (this word translates as attic).

Today it has become fashionable again to make tables in the loft style. Of course, this style does not mean creating designer models from attic trash. The main idea is that supporting structure(legs, box frame) are made of metal, and the tabletop is made of decorative boards of irregular shape.

Coffee table in loft style

The comfortable height of this furniture does not exceed 300–350 mm. In the apartment Coffee table They don’t surround him with chairs, they move him closer to the sofa. If the kitchen interior design is made in the loft style, then such a table against the general background will look quite harmonious.

I'll tell you how to make a loft-style table with your own hands. To do this, you need to prepare the appropriate tools and materials.

Tools

In my workshop I found everything necessary tools to make a loft-style table with your own hands:

  • drill for drilling holes in metal;
  • screwdriver for fastening wooden parts;
  • air compressor with cleaning gun work surface from small debris and drying of painted parts of the supporting frame;
  • welding machine for welding a metal pedestal;
  • jigsaw for processing the ends of the tabletop;
  • brushes for primer, paint and varnish;
  • tray for paint and primer;
  • angle machine for cutting corners and strips;
  • hammer;
  • tape measure and metal ruler;
  • level;
  • chisel for cleaning wood;
  • screwdriver;
  • a set of clamps for fixing parts during welding work.

Materials

  • two oak boards 30 mm thick and 1200 mm long;
  • equal-flange steel corner 32 × 32 × 1210 m;
  • steel strip 50 mm wide and 800 mm long;
  • screws;
  • primer for metal;
  • dye;
  • abrasive wheel;
  • furniture varnish.

In order to make it clear how to make a loft table yourself, I decided to present my actions in the form of instructions.

Step-by-step instructions for assembling a wooden coffee table in the loft style

I assembled the loft-style table with my own hands in two stages:

  • making a metal pedestal,
  • installation of countertops.

Making a pedestal

  1. On a piece of paper I drew a sketch of a pedestal from a metal corner.
  2. Using an angle machine with an abrasive wheel, I cut the metal into pieces according to the drawing.
  3. The ends of the corners were cut at an angle of 45º.
  4. Using a welding machine, I welded two horizontal frames.
  5. For welding metal frame used a workbench. I fixed the structural parts with clamps.
  6. The corners of the lower frame were placed with a vertical shelf up, and the elements of the upper belt of the pedestal were assembled with vertical shelves down.
  7. Placed between the frames vertical racks and connected them by welding to the frames.
  8. I welded two transverse metal strips into the upper frame at a distance of 300 mm from the edges of the frame.
  9. I sanded the weld seams with an angle grinder.
  10. Having installed metal case on the floor, with a level I checked the horizontality of the upper frame of the pedestal.
  11. I applied primer to the pedestal frame with a brush.
  12. After 12 hours, all the metal was covered with gray paint.
  13. Using a drill, I drilled 4 holes with a diameter of 4 mm in the strips.

If there is no opportunity and experience in handling welding, then it is better to order the manufacture of a metal frame in a metalworking workshop.

Fastening the table top

I secured the tabletop boards as follows:

Labor costs and cost of manufacturing a loft coffee table

  • two oak boards 30 mm thick with an area of 1.8 m2 - 800 rubles;
  • 2 steel corners 32 × 32 mm with a wall thickness of 4 mm and a total length of 12.1 m (1 linear meter costs 55 rubles) - 665 rubles;
  • steel strip 50 × 800 mm – 100 rubles;
  • electricity – 200 rubles;
  • can of soil GF-021 0.9 kg – 70 rubles;
  • jar of enamel for metal 0.9 kg – 320 rubles;
  • tube with furniture varnish (aerosol) – 100 rubles.

The total cost was 2255 rubles.

It took me no more than 16 hours to make the table, not counting the time for drying the paint and varnish.

If you order a pedestal from a workshop, the cost will increase by about 30%.

In this video you can see various models loft style tables:

Tables in this style usually have uneven surfaces With wide slits. This can cause small breakable objects to fall to the floor or simply get stuck between the boards of the countertop. However, these inconveniences are more than compensated for unusual design furniture.

The loft style (translated from English as “attic”) is a consequence of the industrial era, during which many large and spacious rooms appeared. Fast growth prices for land in the city center forced the owners industrial enterprises to build plants and factories in the suburbs, and the vacated workshops and their attics were chosen by young and poor creative individuals.

Artists and musicians liked the large, well-lit rooms. It was convenient and economical solution, which made it possible to combine an apartment and at the same time art studio. In this case, the signs of buildings industrial use remained untouched, creating an original interior design.

The design basis of this style is free space . There are practically no partitions between zones or rooms (with the exception of the bathroom and technical premises). Zones are separated using the color and material structure of the walls. The loft-style living room is characterized by exposed brick walls, while in the bedroom they are plastered. In its turn, beam ceilings or the bar may indicate the boundaries of the kitchen. In addition to this method of zoning, movable walls - screens - are also used. Thus, the spatial characteristics emphasize the volume of infinite space.

Main features of space formation:

  • lack of partition walls;
  • high ceilings;
  • big square;
  • big windows;
  • space free from unnecessary details.

Unlike minimalism, which preaches functionality and simplicity, the loft interior design is elegant and even sophisticated. This is facilitated by luxurious and elaborate furniture. The entire space of the rooms serves as a background for such furniture. For example, a sofa should attract attention with its luxury, brightness or unusual shape.

Textured finishes for interior design - These are ultra combinations of materials. Walls in the loft style are characterized by incomplete brick finishing, unfinished plaster, etc. Brick walls, wooden floors, ceiling beams and open views with a deliberately rough finish will set the right tone for the interior design of a loft-style home. In the end, the idea of combining classic and modern, maximizing the feeling of space - these are the main features of a loft-style interior.

Furniture and accessories

The main task of furniture in a loft style interior is add minimalist sophistication to your space. The few pieces of furniture should give a feeling large space and at the same time be the center of attention.

The rest of the furniture should be transformable and easy to move. For example, chairs, armchairs, can be on wheels. Folding sofas are an indispensable style element.

Metal parts fit well into the interior. These can be bronze legs and handles of furniture, cast iron baths, pipes running along the walls. At the same time, furniture in the interior of a loft-style apartment can combine seemingly such different materials, like polymers and wood, steel and expensive exquisite fabrics.

Furniture should be shiny, and its shape can be whimsical and original. The main thing is that she attracts attention. All this will make the interior unique.

Loft style interior accessories should be those that, as a rule, surround any resident of a large industrial city:

  • billboards;
  • road signs;
  • graffiti;
  • signs with street names.

Of course you can use ordinary decorations, but they should be as close as possible to the general urban concept and not to violate general style . Unusual trinkets and other accessories that tell about the profession or hobby of the apartment owner can highlight the appropriate environment. In addition, you can hang a loft-style clock on the wall. You can make such a watch yourself or buy it online.

Loft curtains should be simple and not interfere with the passage of light. You can, of course, do without curtains, but if someone wants to hang them, they must remember that the curtains should be without decorations such as ribbons, fringe, etc. The material from which the curtains are made should be as transparent as possible . The pattern on the curtains can only be large and geometric in shape.

Curtains and drapes in the interior of a loft-style apartment can also be used to divide the room into zones.

Loft style renovation

If someone has a house with an attic, then in this case it will not be difficult to make repairs in the attic in the loft style. But the main task when renovating an apartment or house in the loft style is redevelopment. Because main feature lofts are open spaces, this style is very difficult to create in small apartments or the rooms of the house where most people live. But there is a way out. All zones, except the bathroom, can be divided conditionally. Needs to be removed everywhere interior doors, again, except for the bathroom, and all loft-style rooms should be combined into one space using the same finishing materials.

With the help of bricks peeking out in the corners, boards and bare plaster you can create in the rooms distinctive feature loft - apparent negligence, but at the same time emphasizing the sophistication of the interior. It is not necessary to use real bricks or boards; there are now many imitations of these materials on the market.

Loft style ceiling should have a neutral color of plaster. It is good that the painting creates a look of negligence.

A loft-style bathroom can be decorated with wallpaper with a pattern of old newspapers or painted in black and white color with metallic tiles. If this range seems too gloomy, then in this case you should use wood-like materials.

DIY loft style furniture

The main idea of a loft is to minimize the amount of furniture, but at the same time it should attract attention. Some of the furniture can be made with your own hands - these are stools, shelves and racks. For this purpose it is used natural wood with an initial degree of processing. That is, the boards must be bark-free, smooth and dried.

But besides this, the room should contain pieces of furniture made to order or of unusual shape. Such furniture gives a feeling of luxury and sophistication.

It is better to hide cabinets in walls, niches. You can make special ones drawers for household items. The absence of cabinets will give more space to the room.

In the kitchen and bathroom, metal decorative details should attract attention: taps, handles, etc.

Fashionable decorative elements in the loft style will help complete the overall interior design of a house or apartment. These must be decorative plates, vases, photo frames, expensive figured clocks on a shelf or a loft-style clock on the wall. In loft decor you need to give preference to bold and unusual ideas.

Creating loft-style furniture with your own hands is not the most difficult task. It does not require large expenses and delicate work. But you can’t do without a sense of style.

The loft was born in the middle of the twentieth century during the conversion of industrial premises into residential ones. Today it increasingly comes to small and large apartments, externally adapting them to industrial areas. Here you can connect metal, wood, glass. At the same time, the space remains only conditionally zoned. Walls and pieces of furniture are made quite roughly, most of them are universal and mobile.

A loft-style table will be a bright addition to any modern interior. About everything related to this stylistic direction and our article will tell you about the features of such furniture.

Characteristic features of the style

To understand what the “loft” direction is, let’s conduct short excursion into history. This style originated in the industrial areas of New York during the Great American Depression. Some enterprises went bankrupt, others were forced to move out in search of cheaper premises. As a result, many abandoned industrial buildings and structures. Furniture and equipment were often left in such premises.

Many of these buildings were bought for junk money and rented out. And the furniture that remained in them was used in everyday life. Since the rent for such apartments was low, they were quickly chosen by people of creative professions. It was very convenient - on lower floors it was possible to arrange workshops and exhibition spaces, and the upper ones were converted into housing and work workshops. This is how the “loft” style appeared, which literally means “attic”.

This concept in design includes three main areas:

  • Industrial (or “Industrial”). This is the most popular trend in interior design. Furniture in this style is very reminiscent of working machines: an abundance of rough, untreated surfaces, metal parts, concrete counters, ventilation pipes. Table in industrial style should be as practical, functional as possible and have nothing superfluous. None irregular shapes– only strict geometry.

The color scheme does not indulge in variety - white, gray, black, sometimes brown.

  • Bohemian (“boho”). This design retains general atmosphere industrial workshop. But some mixing of styles is allowed. A striking example of boho loft can be a table with carved legs from the time of Marie Antoinette, bought in some antique shop. And you can pair it with chairs in the Art Nouveau style.
  • Glamorous. This direction has some diversity color range. A small splash of pastel colors is allowed here - blue, lilac. A table in a glamorous loft style may have, for example, a more elegant glass tabletop or forged openwork legs.

Furniture Features

Thus, the loft style is a mixture different directions, a combination of incongruous things. Furniture may look as if it was made from various parts: the tabletop is from one table, the legs are from another, and the cutlery drawer is from a third. The main and main quality of a table made in this manner is its impressive size. This direction does not tolerate miniature and sophistication. Everything must be fundamental, large-scale and thorough.

Even if it is a coffee table or bedside table, it should be strict and concise. Nothing superfluous, complete minimalism and practicality. The entire structure must be compact, carefully thought out, all parts must be strictly functional and have a specific purpose.

Even such small items, such as chairs or hangers, should be as concise and mobile as possible.

So that they can be moved freely in space, they can be made on casters. Thus, you can change the interior of the room, freeing up additional space.

Furniture made in the loft style is characterized by non-standard solutions. This type of design involves moving away from everyday life and routine. There is no place for boredom and banality here. Thus, a table made in the industrial style should be moderately brutal and at the same time elegant. At the same time, it should be used for its intended purpose, and not just be an interior decoration.

When decorating a loft room, there are two main directions - natural design and artificially created:

  • A natural direction when furniture is used in a living space that was originally intended for production premises- For example, scaffolding, adapted for dinner table.
  • The artificial loft direction in furniture design is considered universal and can be reproduced both in the entire interior and in individual details. An example of an artificial trend can be considered an antique table.

Materials

Kitchen countertop can be made from a metal slab. A metal footboard can be used as a support. Or the tabletop can be installed on glass bottles. For a table intended for a bedroom or living room, wooden parts are often used.

It could be ash or birch. In elite models, oak parts can be used. eFashionable furniture boutiques offer fans of this design to purchase metal table with traces of rust. In some instances they may be used broken brick, raw concrete, aged wood. The use of glass and plastic is also possible.

There are no rigid frameworks for making tables in the loft style. Everything will come in handy here. If it is wood, then it can be either polished or completely untreated. If you are using metal, it can also be either shiny or matte.

You can add originality to the design of the product by adding a few unexpected details, using, for example, leather, velvet or any other fabric.

Table models

As mentioned above, the loft style is characterized by practicality and functionality. The shape of such tables can be very different: with even corners or round. Sometimes designers go beyond the usual understanding of a given direction and come up with non-standard forms for tables. One of bright examples such furniture can be table transformer. It can be a real find for a small studio apartment.

Often in small apartments The loggia is combined with the room. After window unit removed, part remains concrete partition, which can also be used as a bar counter or coffee table. The tabletop can be made from old boards, and concrete base It is enough to paint it white or leave it untouched. This design is characterized by a large free space, divided into zones not by partitions, but by furniture. To achieve this, the desk in a loft interior is often placed right in the middle.

When choosing a table for the interior in the described style, you can give free rein to your imagination. Here, ascetic models made of glass on metal support, so wooden elements. Moreover, all these materials can be mixed with each other. The most important rule is that furniture should not be brand new.

It should appear to have a slight patina of age, as if from an antique shop. The color scheme is mainly neutral, but small portions of bright details are allowed.

Interesting design solutions and beautiful examples in the interior

Coffee and coffee tables

Many famous brands are developing original designs magazine and coffee tables in loft design. For example, the Starbarrel company offers its fans a table in the shape metal barrel, which is also a cabinet with shelves and a door.

Products from another one look no less original trademark Cazarina Interiors. For example, round table ik with countertop made of tempered glass and sheet steel bases.

The most unexpected things can be used as tables in the loft style. Even in ready product you can make changes yourself. It is enough to show a little ingenuity and skill. If you rummage through the mezzanines, you'll probably find a couple of grandma's old suitcases with a rigid frame - so why not adapt one of them for coffee table? Another unexpected, at first glance, decision - connect the table with a worn leather sofa.

To make it fashionable designer item, there is no need to spend a lot of time and effort on preliminary cleaning of a battered table from old paint. It is not even necessary to wipe off a layer of dust from it - just cover it with several layers of colorless varnish. If you want to paint your work, choose cool shades such as wet asphalt, dark brown, black, metallic. Or, on the contrary, leave it as a light spot in the middle of the room, painting it white or pale blue. Shades of burgundy and brick are also welcome.

Desks

Choosing desk, we should not forget that the concept of “loft” is characterized by big sizes and some carelessness in decoration. It’s nice if its legs are on wheels, then it can be moved around the room. You can even go even further and build a tabletop directly on old car wheels. Such an interior item will definitely not go unnoticed.

Traditionally, a desk requires a cabinet or drawer for writing materials. Thus, the manufacturers of the Dutch brand Loft came up with a model Sea Container W, where the tabletop is made of solid oak, and the legs and built-in cabinet are made of corrugated metal.
