How to paint interior doors with your own hands. Painting wooden doors: surface preparation and painting technology How to paint a wooden door in an original way

Thanks to modern technologies, today wooden doors not only look beautiful, but are also of high quality, which is difficult not to pay attention to.

But not everyone can afford to decorate their premises with high-quality doors, because such a product made from natural wood species costs a lot of money. But, as a budget option, you can purchase a “semi-finished product” - a door made of solid wood, for example oak, wengue or pine (usually sold in standard sizes), without decorative elements, and give the door leaf an original design with your own hands, painting the wood in the most suitable way LMB.

Unfortunately, buying a new interior door block is more problematic for owners of apartments with an old layout, because the “original” doors have non-standard sizes. In this case, you will have to make doors to order, which will cost a pretty penny. Therefore, it makes sense to restore old doors, thereby saving the family budget and making the apartment unique and unique.

Next, we will tell you how to properly prepare the surface, in what sequence the painting work should be carried out and what paint to paint a wooden door so that the final result looks not only good, but also unusual, if the style of the room requires it.

How can you paint wooden doors?

Today the question is “How to paint a wooden door in an apartment?” is not very relevant, because the market for paints and varnishes is quite diverse. But, before you paint an interior wooden door in your house, you need to think about whether you need to preserve the structure of the natural material, or whether you need to completely mask the grain of the wood by painting the canvas with an opaque layer. Taking your own wishes as a basis, pay attention to the following paintwork materials:

  • Enamels with an opaque base.
  • Oil based paints.
  • Transparent or tinted varnish.
  • Oil based impregnations.
  • Stain.
  • Other paints and varnishes that can refresh the color of wood or give it a beautiful, correct shade.

The table below shows the classification of coatings.

Protective effect: From changes in temperature and moisture. From mechanical damage. From chemical and organic irritants.

Of course, how to paint an old wooden door is up to you, but it’s worth listening to the opinions of experienced craftsmen. Many finishers recommend:

  • Water-based acrylic material (substances containing acrylic have the most optimal consistency, which is important when working with brushes, and also spread well over the surface);
  • Alkyd material (has a good ability to repel moisture, is not afraid of the sun, frost and sudden changes in temperature, dries quickly).

If you need to treat the door to the bathhouse, it is better to choose alkyd paint for outdoor street work, which is less susceptible to adverse factors. Using such material, it will be possible to cover the doors to the house, as well as interior blocks.

Important! Please note that doors can only be painted with alkyd-containing paints on dry surfaces. If the base of the door is wet, the paint will quickly peel and peel. And if you need to varnish the door, do not use drying oil, only stain will help you!

If you are wondering “how to paint a wooden door in a country house or in an apartment?”, you should already understand that applying paint is not carried out in one stage. Sometimes, to get the desired effect, you have to use different formulations. Initially, specialists use impregnation, which can give a certain tone to the door, after which they apply a decorative layer.

Sequence of work

The door structure is not only the door itself, so it is very important to carefully carry out the preparatory process. Of course, you can repaint only the canvas, but this way the jambs will fall out of the overall picture. And so, the process of painting the door should be carried out in the following sequence:

  • The door structure is removed and placed on a stable surface (optionally, a pair of stools). If alkyd paint is used for work, it is better to move the work to the open air, because such paints and varnishes have a pungent odor.

  • Then, without removing the canvas itself, it is fixed with wedges so that the paneled brush has access to all hard-to-reach places. It is also necessary to block the doors so that during the drying process the doors do not slam shut and damage the new layer of paint.

Whatever route you take, you will still have to dismantle the fittings. If there are permanent parts, they can be hidden under paper or foil.

Preparing the door covering

  • Remove all old coating, even primer and putty, until the wood itself remains. For this work, you can use a grinder, a hair dryer, or special cleaning compounds.
  • Then you need to sand the surface, remove any defects, sand off small paint residues, and degrease. This work cannot be done without a sander, which is best connected to a vacuum cleaner. If you don’t have such a device, you can get by with medium-grain sandpaper.

  • When you have completely managed to sand the canvas and prime it, you can move on to puttying large flaws. If you plan to use varnish as a finishing coat, it is better to use a special composition for wood. If the decorative dye is not transparent, you don’t have to worry about the color of the putty. Don't forget about the gaps at the walls and baseboards!
  • After puttying, after waiting the time specified by the manufacturer of the mixture, you need to sand again, masking the abrasions. You can immediately use a medium-grained cloth, and then finish with a fine-abrasive one.

Please note that if there are large dents on the surface and you plan to use an opaque or dark material for the finishing layer, use auto putty. This mixture does not contain glass fibers.

If the doors under the old finishing materials have darkened, and you would like to simply open them with varnish, preserving the structure and pattern of the wood, problem areas can be lightened. To do this, you can prepare a simple bleach with your own hands: mix bleach with water in a ratio of 1:3. When the surface is completely processed, wiped with a rag and dried (so that the paint does not begin to swell), you can begin directly painting the door.

How is a typical door painted?

We told you how to paint a wooden entrance door or an interior door, now it’s time to talk about how to do simple painting to avoid smudges and other problems. If you need to update the outside canvas or paint only the doors, there is no point in buying a spray bottle.

To do this, it will be enough to buy a narrow brush (for hard-to-reach places) and a roller that will suit any canvas (natural wood, fiberboard, MDF, Canadian, etc.). The only drawback of brushes is that they often lose hair, so before work you need to fluff them up so that all the excess and poorly fixed ones fall out, so as not to spoil the finish.

For panel doors, it is better to use a roller so that the paint applies evenly. Work begins from the end, moving to the right. You will have to paint the canvas in 3 passes, so each subsequent layer should be applied in opposite movements. If painting is done on any other surface, do not allow an excess of paint to prevent smudges from forming.

How to use stain correctly?

To ensure that the wood does not absorb excess moisture and the paint applies evenly, the prepared canvas needs to be slightly moistened. All horizontal surfaces are treated with stain along the grain and then across it. The finishing layer is also applied in the longitudinal direction.

The jambs and parts that have not been dismantled begin to be covered from below so that the drops do not touch the still untouched areas. This sequence of actions is followed if the finishing layer is an opaque material. When the surface treated with stain absorbs moisture, the wood fibers straighten, which is why you will need to sand the canvas with zero sandpaper and repeat the procedure.

It is also worth noting that after staining (when the dye dries) the wood becomes lighter. Therefore, you need to coat it as many times as necessary to achieve the desired color. If you want to speed up the process, you can use an alcohol-based stain. The surface treated with this composition will not require re-grinding. But, water-soluble materials are considered safer, will not smell bad and are more popular.

How to imitate wood?

Advice! Today, the design of premises in the Provence style, the laconicism of which few people previously knew, is very popular. Furniture and doors for rooms made in this style are usually chosen in light pastel colors; imitation of antiquity is in great demand.

Adhering to this style when decorating doors with your own hands, a water-based emulsion or other bleached matte coloring composition can help. At the same time, many people wonder whether it is possible to paint wooden doors with water-based paint? Of course you can, why such doubts?

For such substances, you can use both a spray gun and rollers or brushes. However, on the Internet you can find many videos and photos of instructions on how to paint a wooden door white with emulsion, read in more detail, such skills for artificial aging will not hurt you!

And so, to imitate a tree pattern on any base (including metal) you need:

  • Paint the canvas yellowish, grayish, beige or white and dry.
  • Get some liquid soap and a brush, and lubricate the desired area.
  • Take a dark dye and apply it to the surface.
  • Remove liquid soap.

Also, to create a retro door, purchase a special brush, which is sold at any hardware store. The brush is used to make movements, as if combing hair, over the entire surface in order to touch the soft fibers of the rock. The surface can then be pigmented in different shades.

You can simply paint the front door in the color of your choice, or you can try to do something unusual, for example, decorating the metal front door with your own hands using gold acrylic paints.

Interior design often uses natural materials, objects that have their own history, and a touch of antiquity. Not only the aged facade of the kitchen unit will look impressive, but also the aged, slightly worn entrance door with gilding.

We will decorate the installed iron entrance door. The surface of the metal itself looks interesting, and you don’t want to paint it over. It is better to emphasize all the transitions of colors, to add nobility to ordinary iron.

The end result will be a door that looks like an antique one, which was once gilded, but over time has worn out and tarnished.

Tools and materials

To do this you will need:

  • antique gold acrylic paint;
  • red artistic acrylic paints;
  • brown and green;
  • sandpaper (fine and coarse);
  • wide paint brush;
  • a piece of foam rubber, polyethylene and 30 - 40 centimeters of fabric.

Stage one. Preparing the surface of a metal entrance door for painting

We wash the door, removing dust, finger stains, etc. After it dries, take fine sandpaper and sand the surface of the metal. This will ensure better adhesion of the paint to the base. Wipe the treated surface with a cotton pad soaked in acetone. This will degrease the surface, and in the future the paint will not peel off. Now take gold decorative acrylic paint

and use a wide brush to paint the door. The layer is translucent, the metal pattern will be visible through it. We get the following result.

In principle, such a door, turned into gold with your own hands, looks interesting. After applying the second layer of paint, you can complete the decoration, but we will go further.

Stage two. Decorating the front door

Base layer

We take coarse sandpaper and use it to imitate abrasions, completely removing the gold in some places. Then, using fine sandpaper, we lightly go over the entire door leaf so that the second layer of paint adheres securely to the first. It should look something like this

Wipe the door with a damp cloth to remove dust.

Gold spots

We take a piece of damp, easily draped fabric, crumple it, dip it in gold paint and apply it to the door.

Using jerky movements, apply the second layer in spots on the first layer of paint. The fabric needs to be re-creased periodically to create different stains.

The result will be like this.

Patina

Need to add a little patina. It will be red-brown and green. To do this you will need acrylic paints of three colors: red, brown, green. Artistic acrylic paints are suitable.

First, mix the red color with gold and apply the resulting shade to the door in some places. But not with a cloth, but with a crumpled plastic bag, so that the creases and marks were smaller and had a different shape, different from the previously applied spots of gold acrylic.

Add brown and gold paint to the red paint, apply more spots. We don’t mix green with anything, we carefully add it in some places. Apply with the same package. It should be a little damp, so the boundaries of the spots will not be unnaturally clear and contrasting.

If too much paint has been applied, remove the excess with a damp cloth. This should be done with gentle blotting movements.

We get the following result.

Softening the effect

In my opinion, the door is too brutal and serious. Add a soft shine with gold paint. It will smooth out all the transitions, the door will become more interesting and elegant. We do this only two hours after the main decoration, so that the paint has time to dry. For this layer of gold we do not use a brush. We take a small piece of foam rubber, moisten it so that it becomes damp (this will make it easier to stretch the paint) and with soft circular movements we paint the door tightly, the hinges and the frame. If desired, the procedure can be repeated after 2 hours.

Stage three. Finish coating

To protect the result of labor from premature destruction, we will coat the door with façade transparent varnish. It is better to take matte rather than shiny. Pour a small amount of varnish into a wide, shallow container and apply it to the door with a brush. We are waiting for it to dry completely. Now all the work is completed, we are enjoying the result.

It was more convenient for me to work standing, but if you wish, you can remove the door from its hinges, put it on the floor in the room and paint it, and then return it to its place. Here you need to take into account that all work may not be completed in one day. I removed the peephole for convenience, but left the lock, although ideally it is also removable. But then you will need to spend a lot of time adjusting the locking mechanism. There are no such specialists at hand, so I left the lock in place.

Do you want to refresh the interior, but the old door leaf is still in good condition? You can restore the doors a little and paint them a new color. You can entrust this work to a specialist or do it yourself. You don’t need any special skills for this, just study the question and follow the recommendations: “how to paint interior doors.”

Before you start painting, you need to prepare the door leaf. Preparation includes several stages:

  1. Remove the door from its hinges. This will make it more convenient to carry out all the necessary work.
  2. It is advisable to remove the lock and handle so as not to smear it with paint.
  3. Remove old paint defects or all paint. If the old paintwork is in good condition, then the entire layer does not need to be completely removed. Only places where there are obvious defects. If you need to remove the layer completely, you will need a hair dryer or a special paint remover.
  4. Wash the door from dirt and dust.
  5. Degrease the surface with solvent.
  6. If there are flaws on the surface: cracks, potholes, they need to be puttied.
  7. Degrease and prime the surface again.
  8. Allow the primed canvas to dry and repeat again.

The preparatory stage has been completed. You can start painting the canvas.

Selection of paints and varnishes

There are two options for materials for restoration:

  • dye.

Varnish is used for wooden doors. It emphasizes the natural structure of the wood. Hides imperfections and adds shine. Easy to apply, dries quickly and has no unpleasant odor.

The paint is suitable for doors made of any materials: wood, plastic, metal, MDF, PVC, chipboard, fiberboard. Different types of paints are used for different materials.

Rules for choosing paint

There is a huge selection of paints and varnishes on the market. You need to be responsible when choosing paint in order to buy quality products.

Follow some rules when choosing paint:

  • It is advisable to choose odorless materials;
  • preference should be given to water based;
  • choose the right paint tone that will match the style of the floor, furniture or wall color;
  • When repainting, consider compatibility with the previous layer.

Types of paints for painting interior doors

Paints are divided according to purpose into the following types:

  1. Water-based. Inexpensive, without a sharp unpleasant odor, dries quickly. An excellent option for painting interior doors yourself.
  2. Acrylic. Expensive, no toxic odor, dries quickly, has a huge selection of colors. Applies well in one layer. Therefore, if you want to paint a wooden interior door with your own hands, then choose acrylic paint. After drying it creates a matte finish. To give a glossy shine, the top is coated with varnish.
  3. Thermal enamel. Most often used for entrance structures. Protects the surface from temperature changes. Convenient to use. Sold both in a jar and in a can.
  4. Polyurethane. Resistant to damage and scratches. Widely used for structures made of solid oak, ash, pine and other valuable species. Because When wood deforms, cracks do not appear in the paint.
  5. Nitro paint. Honey, toxic. Use outdoors, in a well-ventilated area or with a respirator. Moisture-resistant and heat-resistant.
  6. Interior. Most often used for painting MDF structures. It contains special additives that extend service life.
  7. Glazing. Transparent or natural wood color. Emphasizes the natural beauty of wood.
  8. Alkyd. Affordable, many different colors. But the persistent smell in the room lasts up to three days.

The type of paint material affects the result of painting.

Stages of painting a door

The canvas has been prepared, the paint and varnish material has been purchased, the question remains: “how to repaint interior doors.” To make the coloring look professional, you need to perform the following steps step by step:

  1. Prepare the necessary tools.
  2. It is advisable to remove the door from its hinges and place it in a horizontal position. This reduces the likelihood of drips.
  3. Then we remove the fittings so as not to stain them. If this causes difficulty, then seal it with masking tape.
  4. If there are glass inserts, they also need to be sealed with tape.
  5. Carefully apply the first coat. Use a brush to go through hard-to-reach places: panels, decorative overlays. Use a roller to paint flat surfaces.
  6. Let the coating dry. Then apply a second coat. Repeat if necessary. But more often than not, two layers are enough.
  7. Leave until completely dry. Then repeat the same steps with the second side.

After the coating has completely dried on both sides, you can install the fittings and hang the door on its hinges.

Dyeing technology

The dyeing technology may vary depending on:

  • the material from which the canvas is made;
  • type of paint coating.

It is necessary to take into account the features of all materials and follow step-by-step instructions.

If you want to paint a veneer door, use varnish, stain or acrylic enamels. In order to maintain the environmental friendliness of the design.

Painting an MDF door

Features of painting MDF canvas:

  1. The surface must be made glossy. Therefore, it is necessary to select appropriate paint and varnish materials.
  2. To increase adhesion, the surface must first be primed.
  3. MDF surfaces absorb paint strongly, so it is better to choose quick-drying compounds.
  4. If the sashes are blind, then use a paint roller. This way you will save time, paint and get rid of fluff that falls out of the brush.
  5. The more drying oil you use to prime the door, the more uniform the surface will look after painting.

No special skills are required to paint MDF surfaces. It is enough to do the work consistently and accurately.

Painting a door to look like wood

A door structure made of almost any material can be painted to imitate natural wood. To do this you need to do the following:

  1. Apply a layer of base paint. Let it dry.
  2. Clean the surface with sandpaper. It is advisable to choose sandpaper with fine grain.
  3. Apply a second layer of paint of a darker shade.
  4. Immediately, without allowing it to dry, use a comb to apply a wood-like pattern. Leave until completely dry.
  5. Clean the surface and varnish.

You need to know that not all types of plastic can be painted this way. Also, when working with plastic, it is better to use a brush rather than a roller. To achieve a greater resemblance to natural wood.

How to paint a wooden door

Solid wood products look expensive and beautiful. Therefore, people try to preserve the natural texture and color. And they wonder: “how to paint old wooden interior doors so as to preserve their natural texture.” I coat wooden structures with varnish, glaze enamel or wood paint. You can also make such surfaces look antique.

For wooden surfaces, choose paints with natural oils. Solid wood products can be easily spray painted. This saves time and material consumption. The varnish is applied in two or three layers. Until the surface is perfectly smooth.

Required Tools

To prepare the canvas for painting you will need the following tools:

  • putty knife;
  • construction hair dryer;
  • Bulgarian;
  • screwdriver;
  • sandpaper.

You can do without the entire list. This depends on the condition of the old door covering.

For coloring, prepare:

  • paint tray;
  • gloves;
  • respirator;
  • masking tape;
  • tassels;
  • roller

You can do without a respirator if you purchase paint without a toxic odor. Additionally, you may need old newspapers or other material to cover the surface on which painting will be done.

During the operation of the internal door structure, in a house or apartment, the color of the canvas gradually fades, scratches and other damage appear, and the time comes for restoration and painting. You can eliminate all defects yourself and paint the canvas. To do this, you need to take a responsible approach to the choice of paint, preparation of the canvas and dyeing itself.

Having started renovations in his home, any owner tries to save money or make it cheaper.

So, it is possible to postpone the replacement of doors, trying to qualitatively restore the old ones.

You can master the secrets of this simple skill and learn some of the subtleties on your own!

Updating the input structure

The simplest and most affordable way to update a door is to cover it with fresh paint, since the old layer spoils the aesthetic appearance and changes color over the years. Initially, you need to decide what the structure will be covered with:

  • stain, tinting varnish;
  • thick enamel, acrylic, polyurethane oil paint.

When choosing a coating, we base it on individual preferences, but it is worth listening to the advice of experienced craftsmen - finishers.

Preparing material for painting

The quality of the desired result directly depends on the thoroughness of the process of preparing the restored material. For convenience, the door must be removed from its hinges and placed on supports (you can use the required number of stools). Next you need to do the following:

It is necessary to carefully remove previous layers of paint and other materials, right down to the wood. For these purposes, it is possible to use a grinding machine, or manually using sandpaper, which is securely attached to the block for convenience.

  • Then the blade is sanded to eliminate small cracks, dents and scratches.
  • Use a special wood putty to fill noticeable imperfections.
  • Then, when the putty is completely dry, we sand it again with finer-grained sandpaper.

After finishing the work, the door must be cleaned of dust, wiped with a damp cloth, dried, and you can proceed to direct painting.

Standard door painting process

The paint must be applied evenly without unnecessary smudges or stains. It is most convenient to use a special sprayer, but this is too expensive and costly. Therefore, it is better to use a regular file brush and roller, which are suitable for working with almost any material of all types.

Important: before starting work, it is wise to fluff the brush and remove excess protruding hairs, which may remain on the painted door when finished.

Painting proceeds depending on the type of structure:

If the door is paneled, then painting begins with a brush, which you need to go through all the recesses, without taking too much paint onto the brush. The second stage will be working with a roller.

But the panel door is processed in several steps. It is advantageous to apply the coating with a roller, which does not leave unnecessary streaks and hairs. Work begins from the end - from the left corner to the right down.

Then leave the surface for the time specified by the paint manufacturer to dry completely. The second layer is applied in the longitudinal direction, and the third - opposite to the first layer.

Varnishing a wooden door

An excellent option that will suit many styles is to paint the door leaf with varnish. For this option, you must follow the correct technology:

  • Prepare the material in the same way as before applying paint.
  • Mix the varnish thoroughly until the composition is homogeneous to eliminate bubbles.
  • The first layer (primer) is applied with varnish diluted with water or solvent. Application should be quite intensive, without slowing down, so as not to leave stains.
  • After drying, go over the primer with fine sandpaper to remove small irregularities.
  • Apply the next layer of varnish in a cross direction to the previous one.

Layers are applied in the required quantity until a perfectly smooth shiny surface is obtained.

By following simple rules and techniques, painting or varnishing a door yourself will not be difficult, and it will be beneficial to save your budget during repairs.

Photos of ideas on how to paint doors

Saving money on buying a new door and refreshing the interior of the room is quite possible. To do this, it is enough to update the old door structure, adhering to the technology of preparing and painting the canvas.

Everything about the choice of paint, the features of painting different types of doors and the stages of painting work is written in the article.

Distinctive features of painting different types of doors

Old interior and entrance doors often have a high-quality frame and durable door leaf. Various models, even those made of valuable wood, lose their original luster over time. The layer of paint that has accumulated over the years spoils the appearance of the doors and requires reconstruction.

The easiest and most affordable way to update the entrance structure is to cover it with new paint. Any home craftsman can handle this work; it is enough to know the features of door materials, modern varnishes and paints, and also follow painting technology.

The process of painting different types of doors has its own characteristics:

  1. Solid wood. Doors made of this material are smooth, heavy structures. This option conveys the natural structure of wood as much as possible. To update the array, you should choose a transparent varnish or glaze. If the canvas is outdated, then wood-look glaze will do.
  2. MDF. The design of such a door consists of sheets of particle board and insulation. Painting an MDF door is quite simple, but before doing this you should carefully prepare the surface.
  3. Paneled canvases. The frame is made of MDF, and the inserts are made of thin boards or sheets of plywood. Before painting, the structure will have to be disassembled into its component elements. Due to the large number of joints, panel doors wear out faster and require updating more often.

How to choose materials for painting a door

High-quality paints cannot be too cheap. In this case, the savings are not justified. Sometimes, shortly before the end of the shelf life, stores reduce the price of paints and varnishes. If painting a wooden door is planned in the coming days, then this option will allow you to save money without losing quality.

Optimal paint for doors

Thinking about the question: “What to cover the door with?” It is necessary to have a general understanding of paint and varnish products, their pros and cons. The range of all paints is usually classified into transparent and opaque.

Opaque paints include alkyd and oil-based coatings. The most commonly used paints are nitro paint, acrylic and alkyd enamel. Each of the listed colors has its own characteristics.

Alkyd enamel is the most affordable, available in a wide range of colors and shades. After drying, a durable coating resistant to external factors is formed. The material is wear-resistant, economical in consumption and dries relatively quickly.

A significant disadvantage of alkyd paint is the unpleasant odor that lingers in the room for about two days after painting. The fumes negatively affect the health of allergy sufferers and people with respiratory diseases. It is not advisable to use alkyd enamels in children's rooms.

Nitro paint has high aesthetic properties; the color palette of materials is superior to acrylic/alkyd enamels. Significant advantages include high wear resistance and strength. However, nitro paint is even more harmful to health than alkyd enamel. Paint fumes are very toxic; painting work is carried out only in well-ventilated areas in compliance with safety precautions. You cannot enter the room until the paint is completely dry.

Water-based acrylic enamels are best suited for painting interior doors. The composition is easy to apply, adheres well, and when drying there is no unpleasant toxic odor.

Disadvantages of acrylic paint: higher price and low durability. To increase the wear resistance of the coating and preserve the aesthetic appearance of the top, the paint is coated with a special acrylic varnish.

Varnish for wooden doors is more often used for solid wood structures. Varnishing, like painting, protects doors from humidity, bright light and other external influences. There are clear and tinted varnishes. Some materials are used in conjunction with paints. The choice of one or another varnish depends on the result that needs to be obtained.

Tinted varnish gives the door a certain shade. Transparent conveys the color of natural wood tone on tone.

Advice. When buying varnish, you should pay attention to the drying speed. It is better to choose a quick-drying varnish - such varnish does not spread over the surface and is harmless to health.

Choosing the color of interior doors

Today's range of paints allows you to bring to life the most daring design solutions for decorating a room. In modern design, three main trends in painting interior doors can be seen:

  • delicate, light tones of blue, peach, green, pink, lavender;
  • dark rich shades of brown, cherry, blue, chocolate;
  • bright colors - orange, yellow, red.
  1. Dark shades such as cherry, red walnut, dark chocolate will add sophistication and luxury to the living room. Light colors are well suited for decorating a bedroom and children's room, creating a cozy and comfortable environment.
  2. The snow-white bedroom set is combined with the same white door, decorated with golden panels.
  3. For a wooden house, it is better to choose solid wood doors coated with a transparent oil impregnation.
  4. A classic interior with antique furniture can be complemented with an artificially aged wooden door.
  5. The color of the door frame should be either lighter or darker than the color of the walls.

How to paint a wooden door correctly: technological process

Required Tools

The first step is to take care of the tools. To work you will need:

  • paint tray;
  • paint brushes;
  • gloves;
  • rags;
  • putty knife;
  • masking tape;
  • emery cloth;
  • vacuum cleaner;
  • flashlight - can be useful for conveniently searching for defects on the door leaf;
  • stools (4 pcs.) or trestles (2 pcs.).

Materials you will need:

  • putty;
  • primer;
  • paint or varnish;
  • solvent.

Surface preparation

It is more convenient to work with the canvas removed. Therefore, the door is first removed from its hinges and placed on a support, for example, on 4 stools. If the door is to be painted with an alkyd composition, it is better to carry out the work in the yard, on the terrace or balcony.

After removing the door, remove all fittings. Fixed handles and hinges can be wrapped in paper, secured with tape or wrapped in foil. Fix the lock mechanism and seal it with tape.

In order to paint the door correctly, it is necessary to properly prepare it. How smoothly the paint lies on the door depends on the quality of this stage. Preparation procedure:

  1. Remove old paint, putty and primer down to the wood. To make the work easier, you can use a grinding machine, sandpaper, or a special wood remover.
  2. Perform pre-grinding. This will help remove small dents, scratches and paint residue. Sanding is carried out with a grinder and medium-grain sandpaper. Vacuum the surface.
  3. Visible imperfections in wood should be filled with special putty. Pay special attention to the gaps between the decorative elements and the canvas, lintel and jamb.
  4. After the putty has completely dried, sand the door again with sandpaper - first with medium-grain sandpaper, and then with fine-grain sandpaper.

Advice. Wood that has darkened over time can be lightened with a solution of chlorine bleach and water in a ratio of 3:1, respectively.

Door painting scheme

The painting scheme depends on the door design:

  1. Panel door. Painting occurs in three stages. It is advisable to use a roller - it does not leave marks or hairs and ensures uniform painting. Painting begins from the top corner of the door in a transverse direction from left to right. After applying the first coat, the paint should dry completely. The second layer is applied in the longitudinal direction, and the third in the transverse direction.
  2. Paneled door. First, use a brush to paint all the recesses in the canvas. It is important to avoid excess paint. Finally, the entire door is painted with a roller, following the order of painting the panel structure.

Having decided on the painting technology, you can proceed to further actions.

Staining order

  1. Lay the prepared canvas horizontally, having previously covered the surface with polyethylene. Protect the glass in the door with masking tape.
  2. Use a brush to paint small elements of a wooden door, panels and protruding parts.
  3. Apply the first coat of paint with a roller.

How to properly paint solid pine doors: features of the process

The advantage of inexpensive pine is the pleasant aroma of pine needles, which adds peace to the home and promotes restful sleep. Pine is a soft wood species and is therefore susceptible to environmental influences. To make the material more durable and wear-resistant, it is necessary to protect it with the right paint and varnish.

Some designers are reluctant to use solid pine doors in the interior due to the presence of knots. This deficiency can be corrected using tinted stain. The product will not disturb the wood grain, but will give it a noble shade.

Before painting, the surface must be puttied and sanded. Resin drips and pockets should be removed and the door leaf sanded.

Sequence of painting a pine door:

  1. Sanding. The door, both new and old, must first be treated with sandpaper.
  2. Clean the surface from dust.
  3. Prime the canvas. The primer promotes uniform application of paint and additionally protects the wood from rotting. For better antiseptic protection, it is recommended to use special impregnation.
  4. Staining. Using a roller, apply stain of the desired shade to the door. To completely paint the texture, opaque paints are suitable.
  5. Cover the door with varnish.

Opening with varnish - practicality and durability of wooden doors

Let's consider the technology of how to properly varnish a door:

  1. The first stage is preparation. The order of preparatory activities is fully consistent with the paint application technology.
  2. Mix the selected varnish directly in the jar to obtain a homogeneous mass (during storage of paintwork materials, the material may delaminate). Stirring is done very slowly so that bubbles do not form.
  3. The first layer is a primer. It is performed with diluted varnish, diluted with water or solvent (depending on the type of base). The primer is applied along the wood structure with a brush. You cannot stop while painting, otherwise a stain will form on the surface that will have to be sanded.
  4. After the primer has dried, sand the door with fine sandpaper to remove protruding wood fibers.
  5. Applying a layer of varnish. This layer is applied in a cross direction with the previous one.

The door is opened with varnish until a perfectly smooth surface is formed. You will have to apply at least three layers.

How to properly paint a fiberboard door: step-by-step instructions

Fiberboard is a very porous material, so it must be primed before painting. This will reduce paint consumption and increase the wear resistance of the coating. Ordinary drying oil is suitable as a primer, which must first be heated to a temperature of +40°-+50°C.

Sequence of painting a fiberboard door:

  1. Remove the door from its hinges, lay it horizontally, and clean it of debris and dust. Wipe the surface with a cloth soaked in alcohol.
  2. Apply several coats of primer. Thorough impregnation will significantly increase the strength and water resistance of fiberboard. Drying oil can be replaced with a primer mixture with fungicides/insecticides. Such compositions are devoid of an unpleasant odor and are sufficient to be applied in one layer.
  3. Fill any visible cracks with putty and leave the door to dry completely.
  4. Sand the surface with sandpaper.
  5. Alkyd, oil, acrylic or water-dispersion paints are suitable for painting. When choosing a composition, you need to take into account the type of fiberboard. For example, water-resistant fiberboard will repel water-based paints.
