Apple includes a number of equalizer presets in the equalizer menu that can be used as a starting point for different genres of music.


    Part of the equalizer is the preamp slider, which adjusts the overall level through the equalizer. By increasing the power in each frequency channel, you risk saturating the signal, which pushes it to the edge of its dynamic range, and thus buckling it down, resulting in a harsh sound. The preamplifier allows you to set the power of all frequencies equally, maintaining balance and rolling back any saturation.

    If handled with caution, these two settings in iTunes can be more than enough to significantly improve the quality of your entire music library, but there may be times when there are specific songs or albums that may need very unique equalizer settings. In these cases, you can create custom level settings and then save them using the EQ menu in presets. Then select the songs you want to apply the set to and get information about them by pressing "Command-I". In the information window, select the "Options" tab and select a new style in the "Equalizer Presets" menu. You can also adjust the audio level of a song, as some albums may have tracks recorded at a higher audio level than others.

    Unfortunately, the audio booster won't work for every song, so if you find songs where the booster isn't working as intended, then you'll have to turn it off in iTunes preferences.

    In addition to equalizer options, iTunes supports several other options to enhance your music experience. The first is a "cross-fade" feature that will blend the last few seconds of one song with the first few seconds of the next song; this is similar to what is usually done in radio broadcasts. This will give your library more continuous playback, and will also cut out some of the dramatic (and subjectively meaningful) beginnings and endings for songs, so it may not be the best option.


    The second option is "Check Sound", which will scan the entire library and adjust the individual songs on the volume so that they match the sound level. While this is convenient in some cases, it can have a negative impact on many albums that include tracks that are themselves quite quiet. The option will also interfere with albums that are built from tracks playing smoothly, and where one track will overlap another and sudden sound jumps can be heard when iTunes adjusts their sounds.

    The options discussed work as is with the music in your library. However, those who started accumulating digital music several years ago may have a number of poorly encoded tracks in their libraries. When people first started collecting tracks on PCs, they were in standard MP3 format, encoded at 128Kbps, which takes up space of between 3MB and 5MB per music file, but this resulted in a drop in quality (especially bass and treble). Now using 256Kbps AAC and other formats provides best quality, and you can bypass the processing of older tracks by purchasing new copies of those songs, and it may not be worth the hassle. To fill this gap, Apple offers its iTunes Match service, which will search for a song in the iTunes Store and, if available, play more quality option, not the one on your computer. This service costs $25 per year and does not require an Internet connection, but allows you to have high quality music on all your iCloud devices.

    The last detail to mention, audio quality, is that the media player and audio files are only half the equation. The second aspect is the audio system itself.     The first glance at the player settings makes a Russian person involuntarily confused. It is strange that Apple did not find a normal translator who understands digital audio who would do a normal localization of iTunes.

    One can only guess what was meant here by “playback through”, “sampling rate” and “bits per sample”. I'm not even talking about the fact that one type of slider "sound improvement: weak/strong" just causes homeric laughter.

    But let's get down to business. Let's check how all these settings work.

    So today I'm testing my hearing. To begin with, we take our favorite 24/44.1 sine wave with a level of -80 dB. In DirectSound 16/44.1 mode, distortion is clearly audible, which is due to discarding the lower 8 bits without dezering. If you set the bit depth to 24 bits, everything works fine. Next - if you change the output mode to Windows Audio session (meaning Windows Audio Session) and restart the player (necessary to change the mode), then the bit depth settings no longer affect the sound - obviously, the program starts outputting in the mode specified in the settings Windows devices(24/44.1 is installed there). As for the sample rate, this setting does not affect anything at all, in both modes. Apparently the player continues to output audio at the original sample rate, providing resampling operating system. In general, this is good, otherwise there would be problems with a fixed frequency - like AIMP3.

    Now let's see how iTunes plays its native Apple Lossless (ALAC) format. Let's encode a test signal in 24/96 format and run it through the player.

    Well, order. No processing, no distortion. This is good. Let's move on to lossy. Let's start with an MP3 from a 24-bit source. Let me remind you: we have output via Windows Audio Session, 24/44.1 format.

    And then iTunes pleases us with 24-bit MP3 decoding. A pleasant surprise indeed. Moreover, the decoding results are identical to the results of foobar2000. The player also does well with the AAC format.

    And we are left with the last point - clipping. We check on MP3 and AAC files with a level exceeding 6 dB.

    And here we have a most interesting picture. On MP3 I got clipping with any settings, in both modes. This suggests that MP3 decoding is done with a fixed point (most likely 24-bit integer). ReplayGain iTunes apparently doesn't read it. But it’s much more interesting with AAC - in Windows mode Audio Session I clearly heard the limiter working. It was not initially clear what kind of limiter this was - in the player, or in Windows (limiter APO). Switching to DirectSound, I realized that the limiter was triggered in the Windows mixer, i.e. The player previously output audio in floating point mode. But then I discovered another feature - in the track properties (in the iTunes playlist) there is a tab where you can adjust the volume:

    So, if you move the volume slider in any direction to minimum distance, signal limiting is activated! Presumably, this is already a built-in limiter of the player, designed to prevent clipping when the volume is increased excessively. But for MP3 this trick, of course, does not work - clipping occurs at the decoding stage.

    Bottom line

    So for iTunes we get the following:

    Accurate lossless and lossy decoding, incl. with high bit depth;
    + 24- or 32-bit floating point output;
    + maintaining the original sampling rate - all conversions are performed by Windows;
    - lack of ReplayGain support;
    - MP3 decoding in fixed-point format.

    In general, WMP with iTunes are equipped with simple sound engines that are almost identical in functionality. But judging strictly, with iTunes we have slight advantage as 24-bit MP3 decoding. So Apple fans can rejoice and listen to AAC on their favorite iTunes.
