A balcony is a rather small space, and when arranging it, almost everyone has a question: how to use it profitably and for convenience?

Most often it is used as a small seating area or for storing rarely used items. But the hardest thing is to organize this small space in such a way that it does not look like a landfill. To do this, you need to arrange a closet on the balcony.

The most practical and easiest way to make it yourself is to use clapboard. It will look especially impressive if the entire balcony is also lined with wooden paneling.

Durability of the cabinet on the balcony

In order for the wardrobe on the balcony to look harmonious, it is better to sew up one of the sides and make it directly in this niche. It’s easier to do this on the loggia, because any of the short sides is already the back wall of the cabinet. But before you begin the installation and installation of the cabinet, the balcony needs to be prepared.

Firstly, it makes sense to install a cabinet on the balcony only if it is glazed, because exposure to the external environment will significantly reduce its service life.

And the cabinet will look ridiculous on an open balcony, except for the case when it is just a small cabinet at the same height as the railing. However, moisture, temperature changes and sunlight will quickly render it unusable.

Secondly, it is very important to prepare the floor and wall to which the cabinet will be mounted. The fewer temperature changes on the balcony, the longer the storage space will last. Therefore, it would be optimal if the balcony is insulated. And you can lay an additional OSB sheet on the floor under the cabinet.

Only after preparation can you proceed directly to the installation of the cabinet.

Tools and materials for making a cabinet

So, to make a reliable and beautiful cabinet, you will need:

  • wooden beams 40x40 mm - for the cabinet frame;
  • thin beams - for the door frame;
  • lining;
  • metal corners;
  • boards for cabinet shelves;
  • fittings (handles, hinges, lock, etc.);
  • nails, screws, clamps.

The beams for the frame can be taken from inexpensive types of trees, for example pine, they will still be hidden. However, the quality of the beams must be good, only dry and clean wood.

If the cabinet is completely built-in, that is, its walls are the walls of the balcony, then you need to prepare long anchor bolts with which the cabinet frame will be attached to the walls.

What tools will you need during the work:

  • drill;
  • screwdriver;
  • hammer;
  • saw;
  • level and roulette.

Calculation and selection of necessary materials

First of all, before starting work, you need to decide on the lining from which the cabinet will be made. The best option for this is lining made from trees that do not emit resin - linden, cedar, ash or oak. The more expensive the lining and the higher its class, the more beautiful the cabinet will look, and the more durable it will be.

After all, the quality of the lining is also the quality of its processing. But it is still not recommended to purchase lining of the lowest class C, since its functional features are not suitable for cladding. Therefore, how much money to spend on materials for the cabinet is the choice and decision of each master.

How to calculate the amount of materials needed for a cabinet? Let’s say its depth is 50 cm, the width of the cabinet is the width of the balcony - about a meter, and the height is 1.8 m. For the upper frame you will need 2x0.5+2x1=3 m/run of beams, and the same amount for the lower frame. And also 4 vertical racks of 1.8 m each - 7.2 m/linear. That is, in total you need about 14 mpg of beams for the frame.

To calculate the required amount of lining, you need to consider whether the cabinet will have walls, or whether they are the walls of the balcony. In the second case, the lining is needed only for covering the cabinet doors. Of course, when purchasing all the necessary materials, you need to take a small supply, taking into account possible defects or errors in calculations. It’s better to use the remaining materials somewhere later than to go and buy the missing piece.

It is best to cover the back wall of the cabinet with laminated fiberboard. This will increase the moisture resistance of the cabinet and it will last longer.

Cabinet assembly and paneling

To assemble the cabinet frame, we first install the front and back cabinet frames. To do this, you need to connect the beams with metal corners. The connection of the beams can be done without using corners, but then you will need self-tapping screws no shorter than 60mm.

50cm beams are attached to the frame, they are also fixed with anchor bolts. The front frame is then attached to them.

To make the structure more rigid and durable, the front frame can also be fixed to the walls and floor. Next, shelves are placed inside the cabinet.

Lining the cabinet with clapboard

If the walls of the cabinet are the walls of the balcony, then covering the cabinet with clapboard will consist only of covering the door. In this case, the lining should be as thin and light as possible.

First you need to make a light frame from thin beams. The dimensions of the frame correspond to the dimensions of the future door and should be equal to half the front frame of the cabinet itself. To make the door more durable, you can add a pepper beam. Next, we attach the lining to the frame; this must be done with small nails. After this, the handle and hinges are attached, as well as decorative trims, if provided.

When the door is completely ready and sheathed, the hinges on the other side are attached to the frame and the door is hung on the cabinet. The final stage is the mandatory treatment of wooden lining with varnish or paint. The first option is more preferable, since the color and structure of natural wood will be preserved, which in itself looks very beautiful. In addition, varnish coating will extend the service life of the lining.

Thus, making a comfortable, practical and beautiful wardrobe on the balcony with your own hands is not so difficult, and the result is certainly worth the effort.

Not everyone has the opportunity to purchase a large apartment in order to easily fit all household items. However, this is no longer a problem, because even a small space can be used as efficiently as possible. This creates additional shelves in the hallway, niches under window openings and mezzanines of different sizes. You can also get some benefits from a balcony in a small apartment. It can replace a workshop, a place to relax, a garden and even a small warehouse for storing things. Proper planning of the balcony space will help combine all these functions.

Preparing for work on the balcony: deciding on the type of structure and design

Before you begin the actual production and installation of lining furniture, you need to prepare. To do this, several key points need to be addressed.

  1. Decide on the type of structure. To make it easier, you need to create a plan for the future cabinet on a regular piece of paper. In the plan, indicate the dimensions of the structure, the number and type of shelves, the presence or absence of doors. To facilitate this process, you can look at the photos for examples of such furniture.
  2. Select material. Without proper experience, working with expensive wood or glass is not worth it. It is better to make it from cheap lining. However, there is one condition - such a cabinet can only be used in a glassed room. The material does not tolerate temperature changes. In addition, the lining is fragile, so you need to work with it carefully.
  3. Decide on a design. Lining is a universal material in terms of decoration (paste it with wallpaper, paint it or leave it as is).

Lining is a universal material in terms of decoration (paste it with wallpaper, paint it or leave it as is).

What materials and tools will be needed?

To make a cabinet from clapboard yourself, you need to stock up on materials and tools.

  • Pine beams. For the construction of the frame, beams of 40x40 millimeters are suitable, and for doors you need to select beams of a smaller thickness.
  • Metal corner. It will be needed to fix the wooden parts.
  • Chipboard sheets. The thickness of the sheets directly depends on the future load on the shelf.
  • Furniture fittings. Little attention is paid to it, which is in vain, because the service life and appearance of the structure depend on the quality of the fittings. Hinges, latches, locks and handles for the cabinet must be made of metal that is resistant to corrosion.
  • Nails. They will need to be used to connect wood elements.
  • Several strips of lining (its number and thickness will depend on the choice of shape and design of the structure).
  • Construction tape, pencil, level, screwdriver, hammer, hacksaw and hammer drill.

Creating such furniture yourself is a simple but labor-intensive process.

Decide on a design.

Step-by-step instruction

Step 1 – creating the frame.

You need to use pine beams. First you need to make the rear frame. Horizontal bars are attached to vertical bars in increments of 60 centimeters. You can use regular nails to join wood. The frame must be attached to the balcony wall with anchors. After this, you can attach the strips to the rear frame (the length is equal to the future depth of the cabinet). They are fixed at right angles with metal corners. Then the lower frame (bottom frame) is created in the same way. All walls and the bottom of the structure must be attached to the walls of the room with anchors.

It cannot be compared with the monotonous furniture that is presented in stores and hypermarkets.

In addition, the lining is fragile, so you need to work with it carefully.

Step 2 – covering the inner wall of the frame.

For the back of the cabinet frame, it is better to use a sheet of chipboard. He will be a reliable wall. It is attached to the back wall using ordinary self-tapping screws. If you have a construction stapler at home, you can use that too.

However, by taking a little time, you can build a spacious, functional and original cabinet from lining for household items.

The material does not tolerate temperature changes.

Step 3 – installation of shelves on the frame.

You just need to cut out suitable size chipboard sheets and install them on horizontal wooden guides.

Before you begin the actual production and installation of lining furniture, you need to prepare.

However, there is one condition - such a cabinet can only be used in a glassed room.

Step 4 – making the door.

The design of the furniture and its functionality will largely depend on the quality of the door made. To assemble the door, you first need to prepare the frame. To do this, we take thin beams and fasten the frame to the required height and width. To make the frame strong, we use a diagonal jumper. After this, the frame can be sheathed with clapboard. We fasten it using ordinary nails. Next, we complete the canvas with locks, hinges and handles, and then attach it to the cabinet itself.

Choose a location. Everything is simple here, because the balconies have special niches for installing built-in wardrobes.

It is better to make it from cheap lining.

Decorating a lining cabinet - the final stage

After completing the installation of the structure, you can begin the final stage - decoration. It all depends on the interior of the balcony and the personal wishes of the owners of the house.

Decide on the type of structure.

Select material. Without proper experience, working with expensive wood or glass is not worth it.

A lining cabinet can be left as is if the balcony design also contains wooden decorative elements. However, to extend the life of the cabinet, it must be coated with a protective varnish. Before doing this, you should thoroughly vacuum all wooden surfaces, and only then coat them with several layers of varnish.

To make it easier, you need to create a plan for the future cabinet on a regular piece of paper.

If you want to make the cabinet on the balcony brighter, you can use oil or acrylic paints. Oil paints are cheaper. They dry quickly and will be able to repel moisture, which is necessary for lining. However, after five years, a wooden surface coated with oil paints will begin to fade and crack. For these reasons, it is better to give preference to acrylate paints.

In the plan, indicate the dimensions of the structure, the number and type of shelves, the presence or absence of doors.

The cabinet can be painted in one color, or you can create an original pattern or ornament on its doors.

To facilitate this process, you can look at the photos for examples of such furniture.

VIDEO: DIY clapboard cabinet on the balcony - detailed instructions

Handmade cabinets are most often used to store things. Many people believe that making a cabinet with their own hands is very difficult and only people who have special skills can do it. In fact, you need to follow the advice of experts, then everything will definitely work out. And there is nothing difficult about making furniture with your own hands from lining without much difficulty.

Wardrobe frames made of lining.

To make a cabinet from lining you need to purchase the following materials:

  1. For the frame you will need wooden beams measuring 40 by 40 mm. For the sake of economy, it is recommended to purchase pine beams, but you need to ensure that they are perfectly dry, clean, and no signs of rotting are allowed.
  2. To connect, you need to use metal corners.
  3. To make the door frame you will need boards or beams (thin).
  4. For cladding work you will need lining, which is also necessary for doors.
  5. As a material for making shelves, you can use boards or thick chipboard sheets.
  6. Handles, hinges, and locks must be used for cabinet fittings.
  7. For fasteners, you need to stock up on wood screws, nails and lining clamps.

As for the list of tools, it looks like this:

  1. A screwdriver that must be equipped with a magnetic attachment.
  2. Reciprocating saw, you can use a circular saw.
  3. Construction level, tape measure.
  4. Hammer.

Before making a cabinet from lining, you need to carefully consider the choice of material.

Scheme of fixing the lining.

Wood paneling made from those wood species that contain a small amount of resin is ideal; in this regard, oak, linden and ash should be noted. If we talk about the class of lining, then the higher it is, the more attractive the appearance will be. It all depends on financial capabilities. There is no need to buy class lining, which is technical and not suitable for making furniture.

As for the volume of material required, it all depends on what kind of design is planned. If you plan to use the walls of the room as a wall, then the lining will only be needed to cover the doors. For the back of the cabinet, it is recommended to use laminated fiberboard, which is durable and strong.

How is the frame installed?

Types of lining.

The lining cabinet should be mounted on a wooden frame. The frame is performed in the following sequence:

  1. First you need to assemble the front and rear frames, which involves connecting beams 1.5 and 1.8 m long; metal frames are used for this.
  2. You can lay plywood on the floor; it acts as the bottom of the cabinet. The beams can be connected without the use of corners; for this you need to use self-tapping screws, the length of which is 60-75 mm.
  3. The back wall of the cabinet, which is made of laminated chipboard, must be attached to the rear frame with self-tapping screws or a construction stapler.
  4. The rear frame with the wall is placed against the rear wall, then fixed with anchors; they must be level.
  5. Inside the cabinet, you need to install guides, on which the shelves should then be laid.

Do-it-yourself lining of a lining cabinet

Cabinet dimensions.

Covering a cabinet with clapboard most often involves making doors that are attractive in appearance. This is done as follows:

  1. You need to take a board (it is strongly recommended to use the thinnest possible board) and assemble a frame of appropriate dimensions from it.
  2. In order to achieve the required rigidity, you need to add a jumper to the frame (it has the shape of a rectangle) (it is transverse, but you can also make it diagonal).
  3. The frame is laid on the floor, a lining cut to the appropriate size is applied to it, all this is secured with nails. It is recommended to use lining that is as thin as possible, then you don’t have to worry about the door being very heavy. After the cladding work has come to an end, decorative trims should be attached to its door, and a handle should be attached to the reverse side.

The final touch when making furniture is its varnishing. The cabinet must be coated with a protective varnish, thus not only improving the appearance, but also significantly extending its service life.

This way you get high-quality furniture made from lining yourself. And despite the fact that the manufacture of such furniture is not difficult, it is not only capable of accommodating a large number of different things, but will also serve as an excellent interior decoration. And there is no doubt that all friends, relatives and acquaintances will admire such a work of art!

Shelves on the balcony will help rationalize the space. If you close the hanging shelves with doors, you can get a closet that is practically built into the niche of the loggia. Wall-mounted or folding models, wooden, glass or original, the shelves differ from each other in the principle of openness: some of them can be open, others closed. Depending on the design of the balcony and its dimensions, it is worth choosing one or another model.

For an open balcony, folding structures or hanging ones, forming an entire rack, are suitable. A closed balcony gives more room for imagination, since weather conditions are unlikely to affect the products. By the way, if the balcony is closed but not heated, that is, in the cold season the temperature in the room is much lower than at home, it is worth stocking up on moisture-resistant materials for the shelves - high-quality wood with processing or stainless metal.

Let's talk about these horizontal elements: materials, fastening methods, what you need to create shelves with your own hands and how to think through a functional and durable structure for a loggia.

Materials

  • Chipboard famous for its low cost and practicality. Chipboard shelves are made very simply; the material, easy to process, allows you to create from the simplest designs to interesting collages with storage space. It’s easy to create a real wardrobe on the loggia thanks to the shelves: you can buy a ready-made structure or make it yourself. Chipboard is often used to create furniture for storage and especially in loggia settings. It is important that the material has a special coating against moisture and swelling, provided that the humidity on the balcony is high or there is a sudden change in temperature.

Wall-mounted pieces of furniture on a balcony made of chipboard are suitable for arranging any balcony in any style. If you do not pay tribute to the interior design of this space, then install simple structures in light wood color, and it will become not only a practical piece of furniture, but also a modern and sleek feature of your loggia.

  • Metal is also used to create hanging shelves on the balcony. The main thing is to choose a strong and lightweight base for creating shelves on the loggia or purchase a ready-made structure. For open balconies, choose stainless steel or aluminum; These materials are difficult to weather and do not deform from moisture, unlike wood or chipboard. However, metal products can change shape due to too heavy items that are stored on the shelves; this determines the selection of a certain thickness of the structure and the material used to create it.

  • Wood is used to make furniture, and balcony shelves are no exception. Natural wood is capricious, so you should not install any furniture made from it on open loggias or those that are not insulated.

  • Glass as a basis for hanging shelves is used no less often than the materials listed above. Glass shelves serve more as a decorative element than as a functional storage system.

  • Plastic is an inexpensive and practical material that is superior in quality to chipboard. The plastic shelves included in the rack perfectly withstand dampness, moisture, and temperature changes, so they are useful for arranging an open loggia. However, plastic cannot withstand too heavy a load and does not always look stylish.

How to do it yourself

Balconies vary in their parameters, which requires an individual approach to creating furniture for it. If simple wall shelves can be purchased in a store, it is not difficult to choose their size, but designs with several shelves, like a cabinet, force you to look for an alternative. An excellent solution would be to create hanging wooden shelves on the balcony with your own hands.

First, it’s worth determining the location of the shelves: mark the location of the future piece of furniture directly on the walls, to facilitate the work and improve its quality, use a level: it will allow you to make the drawing as accurate as possible. After applying the markings, you should stock up on the necessary materials: bars, sheets (MDF, chipboard, wood, lining). By the way, this and the following paragraphs of the article are devoted to the production of small storage space on an open or closed loggia.

Nail 4 bars to the walls of the balcony, 2 bars on each side one below the other, which form a niche; they will serve as a base for fastening. If desired, you can install back and side walls for shelves; bars can be attached to these same walls and elements made of chipboard or wood can be hung. Next, we attach the sheets using self-tapping screws to the frame, having previously placed them in the place of fastening in order to make sure that the structure is correct and functional. It is important to determine the required height of the shelves and take correct measurements so that things simply do not roll off the shelf.

After attaching the sheets, you should think about their design: leave them open or enclose them with additional doors. To make doors you will need hinges, the doors themselves, handles and magnets. Here you can show your imagination: it is not necessary to make the closet completely closed; combine open and closed shelves and you will get an original and functional shelving unit.

It is also possible to make interior elements for storage from clapboard; more precisely, a balcony covered with this material with similar shelves will look good. By the way, lining is more practical in comparison with chipboard; it is better to take pine or spruce as a base - they are heat and moisture resistant, durable and practical. If you cut out the elements yourself, then each of them should be treated with sandpaper or a sanding machine; in addition, they can be treated with varnish or other coating of a predominantly transparent color, otherwise the natural shade of the wood will disappear.

Corner

It’s easy to create a corner shelving unit in a loggia, and you can use wood or metal depending on your preferences and climatic conditions in the space. The corner design is incredibly functional and is especially useful on a closed balcony and even an open loggia, if you approach the issue wisely. With an open loggia, leave open those sections of the rack that are not exposed to direct sunlight and where the wind is unlikely to blow; the same recommendation will be useful when making a structure in a closed area.

Corner structures on the balcony do not necessarily form a rack; it is enough to place the finished elements on top of each other and secure them with an original carved or strictly designed bracket.

Wall shelves

Hanging shelves on the balcony, which do not form a rack, will be appropriate on the balcony in small quantities. It is convenient to place flowers, books, any other decor and useful things on such shelves. Their location does not require a classic installation on top of each other; show your imagination and place pieces of furniture like a staircase - at different levels.

photos

Thanks to the shelves on the balcony, you can get an original and practical interior of the room, for example, as in the photo below. Rectangular structures arranged on top of each other in a scattered manner in compliance with proportions. Fig 1

Today, balconies and loggias serve as additional square meters. Therefore, many residents carry out high-quality insulation of their balconies and install energy-efficient double-glazed windows. With warm or even cold glazing, a balcony can become an additional room or workshop. You will need a cabinet in it where you can store all the necessary things and objects (with warm equipment) and those tools and objects that are not afraid of dampness and frost (with cold glazing).

Useful locker

Any man who is at least somewhat familiar with a hacksaw and a hammer can build a cabinet out of clapboard on the balcony with his own hands. Moreover, such a cabinet can have doors and consist of two different halves, as in Fig. 1, 2, and may have the form of open shelves (Fig. 3). In any case, it will perfectly “unload” the apartment from infrequently used, but at the same time, necessary items.

DIY clapboard cabinet on the balcony from leftover material

Usually the idea of installing a locker on the balcony comes in connection with the remainder of the lumber after completing the procedure for insulating and covering the balcony space or performing other work. If there is a problem with finances, then you can equip a cabinet made of clapboard on the balcony with your own hands without doors in just one day (Fig. 4). Manufacturing doors, hanging them and fitting them with fittings will take more time and require additional costs.

Making it yourself - reorganizing the interior space of the closet.

The easiest way

Let's consider the step-by-step production of a cabinet from lining on the balcony with your own hands in the simplest way. Its simplicity lies in the fact that such furniture already has a back wall and sides due to the cladding of the balcony. We need to assemble the frame (Fig. 5) and equip the shelves. Installation of doors - if possible and optional. It is better to make doors with a swing design.

The first stage is preparatory

At this stage, the dimensions are determined and a drawing of the future cabinet is drawn. Its width will be the entire width of the balcony - 90 cm. Its height depends on the height of the loggia, and in our case it is 220 cm. The depth of the cabinet can be different, but not too deep, we chose 60 cm. With a balcony length of 5.8 -6 meters, 60-70 cm spent on a cabinet will not be so noticeable for the total area.

closed cabinet fig. 2 cabinet without doors fig. 3

The second stage - installation of the frame

To make racks you will need timber with dimensions 40x40 mm and a length of 220 cm - 4 pieces. Each beam is alternately fastened to the walls with anchor bolts in 3 positions. At the top along the width and depth of the cabinet, 4 bars are attached, connecting the vertical racks. We will get a rectangle on the ceiling. If the installation of doors is not provided, then such a rectangle at the bottom is not required.
