DIY double swing. Swings for the dacha: types, how to choose, making it yourself. Advantages and disadvantages of profile pipe

Bird trills delight the soul, and gentle swaying soothes. Garden swing on summer cottage needed not only by children, but also by adults. Moreover, it is absolutely not necessary to buy the same type of model covered with fabric. It’s much more interesting to create an original one designer item on one's own. How to make a garden swing with your own hands? What is better to choose for the frame, metal or wood? Tips from experienced craftsmen, drawings, a selection of photos and video instructions are in this review.

Homemade swings and their classification

As a child, it seems that the “winged swing” can reach the sun. Growing up, we remember this wonderful feeling of carefreeness. And subconsciously we want to repeat it. This is quite possible, because swings are not only for children:

  • family. They look like a bench with a high back, suspended on strong supports by chains;
  • mobile swings can be moved to another place if necessary;
  • the hammock is the ultimate champion for relaxation;
  • swing-gazebo. Suitable for several people to relax;
  • balancer or pendulum. A floor structure in the form of a log, throwing itself on one side or the other, depending on the weight of the players;
  • swings - sofas. Soft design with the ability to implement the most daring design solutions;
  • swings - “boats”.

According to the manufacturing method, swings are divided into:

  • frame;
  • frameless.

By installation method:

  • stationary;
  • portable - easy to remove and put away in another place.

The frame can be made from a number of materials and their combinations:

  • plastic and fabric;
  • tires and chains or ropes;
  • wood and chains;
  • rounded and non-cylindered beams;
  • metal.

Choosing the right option

Before you begin construction, you need to decide on the purpose of use and the material of manufacture. If a child under 3 years old needs a swing, then a purchased or homemade stationary, stable option is suitable. For children over 5 years old - light plastic or wooden hanging swings. They can be attached to the beam of an awning in front of the house or to a strong tree branch. A noisy group of children will appreciate the entertainment in the form of a balance beam (pendulum).

Attention! Products made from processed wood and metal are considered the most durable. To “winter”, it is enough to cover them with polyethylene. Purchased swings with a plastic base, covered with fabric– must be disassembled for the winter and stored in a dry, warm room.

If you want your garden swing to serve not only as a place to relax, but also as an accent piece landscape design, then you can prefer noble forging or wood eco-design.

For the older generation, durable benches with a high back and canopy are ideal. For noisy young people - swinging sofas with a lot of colorful pillows or hammocks for relaxing with a book.

Original design from a car tire

A swing that any beginner can make from scrap materials. For production you will need car tire, strong rope and the ability to tie sea knots.

Installation steps:

  1. Drill four holes in the tire. 2 on each side.
  2. Insert a rope into two holes located nearby and tie it firmly at the bottom, under the tire.
  3. On the second side repeat the same steps.
  4. Choose a suitable tree branch or any other crossbar. Hang the improvised swing on the beam. The main thing is strong components that ensure safe swinging.

Such installation will not take much time, but will bring children a lot of joy.

Children's entertainment made from board and rope

The easiest swing to make, which does not require special skills and materials, is a beam suspended on a rope.

Attention! A wooden swing without a back is unstable, so it is recommended to build it for children over 7 years old. If you want a swing with a back, you can cut off the legs wooden chair and attach it with a rope to the base and back.

For installation you will need:

  • edged or unedged board 3-4 cm thick and 15-20 cm wide;
  • strong rope;
  • antiseptic, varnish;
  • hacksaw or saw.

Step by step guide:

  1. Cut a piece of board to the required length.
  2. Sand until smooth.
  3. Cover with antiseptic and varnish.
  4. Cut 2 grooves along the long sides of the board closer to the corners.
  5. Make 2 more cuts on both sides about 3 cm from the corners.
  6. Thread the rope from groove to groove with three “stitches”.
  7. Attach the rope to any cross bar.

The fastening feature guarantees the strength of the structure. The rope will not come undone or fray at the bottom.

Making family swings from wood and metal

An evening conversation on a regularly swaying bench promotes mutual understanding. And if you decorate wooden frame nice pillows, a comfortable stay is guaranteed!

Advice. The thickness of the slats for the seat of the swing bench should be greater than for the backrest.

Before construction you need to prepare everything you need:

  • 15 pine or spruce boards 10x25x2500 mm;
  • 1 board 150x50x2500 mm;
  • chain, equal to length swing;
  • 40 self-tapping screws size 80x4.5;
  • 200 self-tapping screws 51x3.5;
  • 6 carbines;
  • 2 screws with rings 12x100;
  • 2 screws with rings 12x80;
  • drill, jigsaw, a circular saw, hammer, plane.

Action plan:

  1. Cut boards 1.5 m long.
  2. Cut 6 shaped parts for the base of the bench from the thickest board.
  3. Having arranged 6 parts in 1 row, attach them to wooden planks self-tapping screws. The plank should be fastened first at the ends, then in the middle. It will take 17 boards for the seat and 15 for the back.
  4. Make two armrests and the remaining wood.
  5. Attach to bottom part armrest screw with ring.
  6. Attach the finished swing to any crossbar. If it is not there, then you can dig 2 beams into the ground, concrete them and connect them with a transverse board.
  7. On top crossbar strengthen 2 more rings.
  8. Stretch the chain and hang the swing.

A properly constructed structure will be solid and reliable, and will last for several seasons.

Sturdy base for any type of seat

You might want to hang a swing bench or a couple of children's rungs from boards on chains. The main thing is to mount a reliable base that can withstand both a small load and several adults.

For construction work The following elements are required:

  • beams 100x100 mm;
  • boards for constructing a base and canopy;
  • concrete;
  • self-tapping screws;
  • hammer, hacksaw, drill, tape measure.

Advice. The part of the beams intended for burial in the ground should be treated with bitumen varnish or resin.

Step-by-step instruction:

  1. Determine the location for the swing. This stage is important because the design is not portable.
  2. Dig 4 holes, 1 m deep each.
  3. Place the beams in the holes so that they cross at the top, resembling the letter “l”.
  4. Fill the base with concrete.
  5. Fasten the beams with self-tapping screws at the intersection points at the top.
  6. Knock down wooden flooring from half the slats.
  7. The second half consists of a canopy with a horizontal crossbar and jibs that strengthen the structure.
  8. Finish the finished frame with varnish.

Any type of swing can be attached to such a base using rings, a carabiner and a chain.

What to choose, chain or rope?

The safety of the swing directly depends on the type of suspension. Rope is a fairly strong option, especially if secured with maritime hub. But over time it can stretch out or fray. Therefore, such a suspension is recommended only for children's swings that are not subject to heavy loads.

Attention! The optimal rope is a nylon rope with a cross lay of 24 mm or more.

The chain is a more durable option that can withstand increased load.

Pros of using a metal chain:

  • strong;
  • the weakening of the ring is immediately visible;
  • optimal for weak swinging.
  • When mounted on bearings, it swings very strongly. This means that it is necessary to install a swing speed limiter;
  • In large rings, babies can get their fingers pinched.

A garden swing is not just a place to relax, but also an original “highlight” of any site. A rational choice of design, construction taking into account all the nuances and careful care will ensure a “long life” for the swing.

It is not difficult to make a garden swing with your own hands if you know how to use tools. All work can be completed in one or two days.

What to make a swing from

You can construct them from almost anything you can get your hands on:

  • Wood: beams, trimmings, logs, slats from boxes, boards, slats, benches.
  • Metal: pipes, profiles, rods, wire, chains, rings, hooks, sheets.
  • Plastic: boxes, chairs, hoops, pipes.
  • Shaped parts from sewerage: tees, elbows.
  • Bearings.
  • Ropes, ropes.
  • Tires.
  • Thick fabric, tarpaulin.
  • Cases and seats of old cars and motorcycles.

As you can see, we can continue ad infinitum, but we will limit ourselves to this list for now.

Beginning of work

To properly make a garden swing with your own hands, you first need to prepare a project and drawings future design, based on the material you have available. If you are planning to make a metal garden swing, but there are not enough parts, you can ask your neighbors, friends, or make them from another material, such as wood.

Prepare a pencil (pen), eraser, ruler, paper, protractor. They will be needed not only for drawing, but also for subsequent marking of parts. If you can’t immediately start drawing (you don’t know where to start), then just sketch out a drawing of the swing, “as you see it.” It will be much easier to draw from a drawing.

Don't feel like you're wasting your time drawing out all the details. At the construction stage, you will have to refer to the drawing more than once.

Installation of supports and crossbar

Installation of supports can be carried out in different ways:

  1. Install two vertical beams or pipes.
  2. Dig two capital letters L.
  3. Install two A-frames.
  4. Mount the supports like the letter X.

The photo shows different kinds installations. As you can see, the crossbars are also secured differently. In addition to such fastening methods, for example, in the first picture, you can drill the racks at the top and install metal pipe or a thick rod. An axle from a cart or trailer is used as it.

If you made racks from wide boards– you can drill them out and install bearings in the holes. Cover them on both sides with perforated sheets of metal, which are nailed to the board. A rod must be inserted or pressed into the holes.

A more advanced method of fixing the horizontal line involves a special design mounted on poles, made by welding three sections of metal pipes.

There are several options for mounting supports:

  1. Install on the ground or dig into it. The option is bad. Due to dampness, the end of the beam will rot and the whole thing will collapse to the ground.
  2. Wrap the butt of the support with polyethylene or paint it.
  3. Concrete the support.
  4. Install on a special podium or terrace.

The second and third options are more acceptable. You need to wrap the end so that the film extends 20-50 cm outwards. This will protect the bottom of the protruding part of the column from dampness in winter (into snowdrifts). The same must be done when filling the pillar with cement. The formwork should protrude from the ground.

Suspension and mounting structures

To prevent children and especially adults (due to the greater weight) from falling, it is necessary to hang the swing securely. To do this you need to find:

  • fairly strong ropes - you can use parachute lines (withstand 150 kg) or mountaineering ropes;
  • chains - even those used to tie dogs are suitable, but preferably thicker ones;
  • thick wire or long metal rods with a caliber of at least 10 mm.

Mounts can be completely different:

  • From a rope. Throw a rope over the crossbar and secure it at the bottom of the seat. Or pull it through the saddle and tie it with a knot at the top.
  • Hook or ring.

The second method has several options:

The first two are designed to grip shaped crossbars: rectangular and round. They are a kind of clamps with hooks.

The last two are designed to strengthen hooks or rings in the through hole of the crossbar.

Manufacturing of seats

Everyone has long been tired of classic boards and half-logs on swings.

We will talk about several unconventional methods for making swing seats. They are easy to make and do not take much time.

Option 1.

Most easy way– use old chairs or benches made of any material that have broken legs. It's beautiful and practical. There are several ways to attach them to a swing:

  1. We drill 4 holes in the seat of the chair (blue), pass ropes through them and tie a rod or thin metal tube at the bottom. He won't let the rope slip back.
  2. We screw or nail boards to the seat (yellow) and drill them. We thread ropes through the holes and tie large knots. For safety, such knots can be omitted to prevent them from unraveling and passing through the hole. It's better to just tie the end of the rope around the board.
  3. Instead of holes in the seat, we cut out grooves and wrap a rope around the chair (pink). But the child may jump, the rope will become free and slide to the side. To prevent the rope from jumping out, we stuff boards from below.

Option 2.

You can make a seat from tarpaulin or fabric, but it is not very comfortable, since it hugs the person sitting on both sides, squeezing him. For convenience, you can install a spacer above the seat on a rope or chain and then the degree of girth will decrease.

Option 3.

Make a pseudo seat from a tire. Hang it on the ropes. Stuff soft unnecessary things into the sector facing the ground.

For convenience, take tires big size, for example, from the rear wheels of a tractor.

Option 4.

Hoop as a seat. Take a hula hoop and wrap it with ropes along the diameter:

If this is difficult for you, you can put a ring in the center of the hoop and thread the ropes through it. First, place a small circle in the center and reinforce one cord so that its two ends are on the same side. Then reinforce the twine on the opposite side. And so on.

Option 5.

For this, use an old, durable basin, tub, or even a trough.

But just sitting on wood, plastic or metal is not very pleasant. For greater comfort, you can put cushions for garden swings on the seat, made of foam rubber and covered with thick fabric or leather. If you carefully make soft seats during assembly, then no pillows will be needed.

How to make a garden swing from wood

There are two ways:

Option 1.

They represent a seat made of any suitable material, suspended by one or two ropes on a branch.

From the photo you can see that the ropes can be tied in different ways, the main thing is that they do not slip:

  • on the left side, two ropes are thrown over a branch and secured below with four knots;
  • in the top right picture, one rope is suspended from a hook;
  • on the lower one there are two ropes hanging on hooks.

Option 2.

Perform the swing completely out of wooden parts. That is, make the supports and crossbar from beams or logs, and the seat from boards, slats or wooden benches and install as stated above.

If you pour the foundation, attach a knocked down special shield and a podium to it and install a swing - it will be even better. After all, the supports and shield do not touch the ground. Moreover, between the shield and the foundation there are additional bars, providing ventilation of the shield.

We provide drawings of the two designs below.

As you can see, a wooden garden swing is not that difficult to make.

How to make a garden swing from metal

Usually done welded construction in the form of the letter P, on which the seat is suspended using hooks with clamps or through ones.

It is made from pipes with a caliber of at least 5 cm. You can simply dig in or concrete two risers, in advance drilled holes insert the axle from a wide wheelbarrow or cart and lock it with the mounted wheels.

You can weld a wire with a swing onto the axle, because the axle will rotate freely. For greater effect, you can install it on bearings, as mentioned above.

To complete the second option, you need to weld something resembling the roof of a house. Everything is clear from the drawing.

Constructions of this type can also be made from a profile. Let us warn you right away - it is not made of plasterboard. That profile is very thin and may not support a swinging person. It is designed for stationary load.

The industry produces rectangular pipes, T-beams, I-beams. Here you can make a swing from them. Their appearance is no different from the other structures described above.

The following options are more difficult to implement, because to implement them you need to weld several pieces together.

To bend pipes, you can use a proven method:

  • the mandrel is prepared;
  • the pipe is tightly clogged with sand and plugs (wooden);
  • then carefully bend the future support along the mandrel.

These designs are distinguished by the fact that they can be easily carried or moved. True, this may require 2-4 people.

How to make a 3-seater swing

Typically, swinging designs require a single-seater, less often a double-seater option. But now the 3-seater garden swing has come into fashion.

The installation of the stands and suspension is identical to those described above, but the width is much larger.

To do this, you will need to make a special elongated seat that can accommodate three people, and install racks at a distance of at least 2 m.

The seat can be made in two versions:

  1. Classic - everyone sits facing the same direction.
  2. Modern - average rider, looking in the opposite direction.

Let's consider the first option. It is easy to implement. To make it, you can even hang a bench like the kind you see in parks. But due to its heavy weight, this is not worth doing. It’s better to make a special seat yourself.

It can be done from aluminum pipes or made of wood. Below is the assembly procedure for the three-seater seat. Its length is 1500 mm or more, the width and height of the back is 500-600 mm.

This article will talk about the types of swings, how to choose them correctly and how to make them yourself.

Classification of swings for the garden

Swings for the dacha can be divided into two types: garden and hanging. The garden swing consists of support posts, seats and canopy for protection from sun and rain. Hanging swings have only a seat and a suspension, and require a special place for their installation.

Garden swings can be installed anywhere in the garden or on the veranda. They are portable and stationary. A portable swing can be moved around the garden and stored away for the winter. A stationary garden swing is a permanent structure that is installed once for its entire service life. Garden swings have a small swing amplitude and are intended mainly for quiet relaxation.

Fig.1.

The material for making a garden swing can be metal or wood. Metal swings are more compact and lighter weight. This type of swing is usually portable. Wooden swings are rarely made portable due to their heavy weight. However, a wooden swing will fit better into the design of any cottage. In addition, they are easier to make with your own hands, since no welding is required.

Garden swings for a summer residence can be multi-seat or single-seat.

Multi-person swings are designed for 2-4 people. They are often equipped with a canopy to provide protection from rain and sun. This swing will be a great place to relax for the whole family.

Fig.2.

Single seat garden swings are mainly designed for children and used for entertainment.

Hanging swings are attached to a stationary fixed support or a tree branch. They have a large swing amplitude. This type of swing is designed for active recreation with children.

Fig.3.

In the class of garden hanging swings there are models for a relaxing holiday, these are swing-sofas and swing-hammocks. Hanging swing sofas They are mainly installed on the veranda and attached to the floor beams. Hammock swings are lighter in weight and can be used both on the veranda and on outdoors, but in this case it is necessary to first make a support for the swing.

Fig.4.

How to choose a swing for your garden

The main thing is to understand which swing is right for you and for what purpose it will be used. Family friendly great solution There will be multi-seat garden swings. Hanging hammock swings are well suited for individual relaxation.

When choosing a multi-seat garden swing, it is important to correctly assess how many people will use it, how often guests come, etc. It is possible that for a large company, one swing may not be enough.

Garden swings can be equipped with a canopy to protect them from rain and sun. If the swing is installed on the veranda, then a canopy is hardly necessary. On the contrary, if the swing is installed in the garden or on open area, for example, in front of the pool, then a swing with a canopy will be a priority.

The swing can be made of wood or metal. Wooden swings will fit perfectly into the design of any garden, but they have heavy weight and they are difficult to carry. Wooden swings are usually installed once for their entire service life. Metal swings are lighter and more compact, and can be easily moved around the garden.

Fig.5.

When choosing a metal country swing, it is important to pay attention to the diameter of the pipes from which they are made; the thicker the pipe, the stronger, more reliable and stable the swing will be. To make a swing, a pipe with a diameter of 30 to 60 mm is used. Such swings can withstand weight up to 300 kg, while their own weight does not exceed 100 kg. These characteristics must be clarified with the seller. The more massive the swing, the more stable and comfortable it is, but the more difficult it is to carry.

When choosing a swing, it’s a good idea to think about the installation location. If the swing has straight shapes of the load-bearing support, then for this swing it is necessary level base. Curvilinear supports can be stably placed both on a level surface and on the grass in the depths of the garden.

When choosing a swing, don’t forget to ask your friends; most likely, someone has already purchased a swing and can tell you about the advantages and disadvantages of specific models and give practical advice.

Swings for active recreation with children

For active holidays with children best choice there will be hanging swings. They will bring a lot of bright emotions to both children and adults.

Children's hanging swings are inexpensive, and the choice is huge. If you want to create individual style suburban area, then it’s easy to make a hanging swing with your own hands from scrap materials.

Fig.6.

When purchasing a hanging swing, you should remember that it is safe to use, especially by small children. The swing should have seat belts for the youngest and restraints for middle-aged children. When choosing a swing, you need to pay attention to the permissible weight. It should be no less than the weight of the child.

The supports for installing the swing must be stable and easily support the weight of the swing with the child.

DIY hanging swing

The easiest hanging swing to make is a swing made from a board. This type of swing is perfect for middle-aged and older children and adults.

A board swing consists of a seat and a suspension. A board 40-50 cm long, 15 cm wide and 3-4 cm thick is well suited for the seat. All burrs must be removed from the board and the edges smoothed. Holes are drilled in the corners of the board to secure the suspension.

Fig.7.

A thick rope or rope is perfect for hanging. The simplest and reliable way attaching the seat to the suspension - thread the rope through the hole in the board and secure it with a knot.

If the swing is intended for adults, then a metal cable or chain can be used as a suspension. In this case, it is convenient to use an eye bolt to attach the suspension to the seat.

Fig.8.

Another popular option for hanging swings is the tire swing. To make a swing you will need an old car tire. The tire is secured to the suspension at 3-4 points using an eye bolt or bracket. You can use a rope or chain as a suspension.

Fig.9.

You can use not a whole tire, but cut something like a seat out of it. The simplest option is a seat in the form of a basket. But in reality there are many options and they are limited only by the imagination.

Fig. 10.

No less simple and interesting option Hanging swings are swings made from old chairs. To make a swing you will need a chair. The legs of the chair are sawed off and secured to the hangers.

Fig. 11.

When making a swing from a chair/armchair, it is important to make sure that the seat is securely attached to the suspensions. Sometimes it may be necessary additional elements to strengthen the structure.

Fig. 12.

An interesting swing can be made from an old skateboard. It will be a boat-type swing. You can swing on them while standing.

Fig. 13.

Hanging swings for the dacha can be made from almost any materials that can be found in the dacha. Don't be afraid to experiment. It is only important that the swing is safe and easy to use.

Support for hanging swing

Almost any support can be used for a hanging swing. The main thing is that it is reliable, durable and can withstand the weight of the swing. A tree branch, a special portable support, stationary wooden or metal, or floor beams can be used as a support if the swing is installed on a covered veranda.

For small children, it is most rational to use a mobile metal support. It can be purchased together with the swing. Its cost is not high, and there will be no problems during installation and operation.

Fig. 14.

Swings for middle-aged children and adults require stronger support. For a swing of this type, in the absence of durable and big tree nearby, you will need to make a stationary support. The simplest is the U-shaped support. It consists of two pillars rigidly fixed into the ground and a crossbar to which the hanging swing is attached. The support can be made of wooden beams or a metal pipe.

Fig. 15.

To securely fasten the support in the ground, make two holes 1 m deep; it is convenient to use for this purpose garden auger. A layer of crushed stone 20 cm thick is poured onto the bottom of the pit. The space between the walls of the pit and the support is filled with cement-sand mortar made in a ratio of 1:3. After a week, the solution will harden and the support will be ready for use.

Hanging swings must be secured to the support using eye bolts. This is the simplest and most reliable method that will provide a high swing amplitude. It is suitable for both wooden and metal supports.

Fig. 16.

If the swing is installed on the veranda, then it can easily be secured to the floor beam or roof rafter using eye bolts.

Fig. 17.

Swing for a relaxing holiday

Swings for relaxation include garden swings in the form of a sofa for family relaxation and hanging swings in the form of a hammock for secluded relaxation.

Garden swings are perfect for gatherings with friends and for relaxing with the whole family. A garden swing-sofa can be placed anywhere in the garden or in an open area, but in this case it must be equipped with a canopy to protect it from the sun and rain.

A hanging hammock swing will become a favorite place for those who love privacy. They can be installed on the veranda or in the garden, in which case you will have to purchase or make a support for hanging.

Do-it-yourself garden swing made of wood

Garden swings are the most popular. They are the most versatile and are suitable for both family gatherings and private relaxation. A garden swing consists of a support, a sofa and a canopy. All elements of the swing are made of wood.

Fig. 18.

For the manufacture of wooden swing for the dacha you will need a drill, a wood saw, wood glue (moisture-resistant PVA glue), a plane, and a set of wood drills.

It is advisable to make garden swings from well-dried wood. This way, dry wood does not shrink and lose its shape. Drying lumber is very easy. IN summer period It is enough to put them in the open air for two weeks. It is advisable to dry the wood in the shade under shelter from the rain.

When making a garden swing, it is important not to forget to treat the wood with an antiseptic and cover it with a protective varnish or paint, and the varnish must be resistant to moisture and sunlight. Yacht varnish is perfect.

Making a support for a swing

Stationary support for country swing the simplest and most economical to manufacture. It consists of two pillars fixed in the ground to a depth of 1 m. For support, you will need two beams with a cross-section of 100x100 mm and a length of 3 m.

Fig. 19.

To install the support for the swing, two holes are dug in the ground, 1.2-1.5 m deep and 30-40 cm in diameter. It is convenient to use a garden drill for this purpose. A layer of crushed stone 20–50 cm thick is poured onto the bottom of the pit and compacted. Plot wooden beam 1 m long on the side that will be underground, coated bitumen mastic and wrapped in roofing felt to protect against rotting. Then the supports are installed in the pit and filled with cement mortar. Cement mortar made in a ratio of 1:3 (cement: sand). After a week, the solution will gain strength and you can hang the swing.

The disadvantage of a stationary support for a swing is the inability to move the swing around the site and put it away for the winter. For this reason, it is often preferred portable form swing.

The most popular portable design supports for country swings are two pairs of beams with a cross-section of 80x80 mm, installed at an angle and connected to each other. In this case, the swing is not fixed to the ground.

Fig.20.

The beams are connected to each other in half a tree at an angle of 40-45 degrees. To increase the rigidity of the swing, a side crossbar is installed. The supports are connected to each other by the upper horizontal crossbar (crossbar) and the lower one at the back of the swing. The swing seat is attached to the crossbar.

When assembling supports for a swing, it is advisable to use not self-tapping screws, but adhesive connection, fastened with bolts. This connection method is more durable and reliable, and the swing will last a very long time.

Another support option for portable swings is supports made of four vertical bars. In this case, you get something like a gazebo in which a swing is suspended. This design will be heavier than the previous one and moving it around the site will be very difficult.

An interesting solution for swing supports is shown in the photo below. Thanks to this shape of the supports, the side posts do not block the view and the swing looks more open.

Making a canopy for a swing

It is advisable to equip a garden swing installed outdoors with a canopy that will protect you from the scorching heat and rain.

The canopy consists of a frame and decking. The frame is made of wood. Any roofing materials, polybicarbonate or fabric can be used as flooring.

The frame is usually made single-pitch and gable. A single-pitch frame is often used in conjunction with fabric flooring. The result is a light, elegant design that provides excellent protection from the sun and somewhat less protection from rain. The fabric canopy must be removed for the winter. The gable roof of a garden swing is used on swings that are not removed for the winter. Bituminous shingles are used as flooring.

A lean-to canopy is the easiest to make. The frame is assembled from bars with a cross-section of 20x30 or 30x40 mm, and it is fixed to the swing supports at an angle of 10-20 degrees. The fabric is stretched over the frame.

Fig.23.

A gable canopy is made by analogy with gable roof. The angle of inclination of a gable canopy is usually chosen in the range of 10-20 degrees. The swing is installed on the supports and crossbar (the beam from which the swing is suspended) rafter system from bars or boards. Lathing is attached to the rafters if sheet flooring is planned, or plywood if flexible tiles are planned.

For flooring you should not use corrugated sheets and sheet iron, it gets very hot in the sun and relaxing on the garden swing will not be comfortable.

Making a swing seat

The seat for a garden swing is made in the shape of a bench, only without legs. Dry planed lumber is used to make the seat. You will need a block with a cross-section of 30x50 mm for the frame and bars or boards 20 mm thick for the seat itself.

First, the frame is made. To do this, connect the bars at an angle of approximately 100-110 degrees. The best option- this is to fasten the bars into half a tree using wood glue and bolts. After the glue has dried, bars are attached to the frame, which will act as a seat; they can be secured with self-tapping screws.

Fig.25.

The finished garden swing seat must be hung on the frame. A rope or chain can be used for suspension. Preference should be given to the chain as it is more durable and will not fray during operation.

To hang the seat on the crossbar, you need to install two eye bolts or brackets. The swing seat also requires two eye bolts on each side of the seat. One eye bolt is attached to the seat, and the second in the middle of the backrest. This arrangement of the fastenings does not allow the seat to tip over during rocking.

Fig.26.

Chains are attached to the fixed eye bolts using carabiners. The length of the chains is selected based on the required seat height and inclination. It is convenient to use chains that are slightly longer than required. By attaching a carabiner to different links, you can change the height and angle of the swing seat.

An ergonomic version of the seat for a garden swing can be made from plywood. Plywood with a thickness of 20 - 30 mm is used to make the frame. The seat bars are attached to the frame.

A seat for a garden swing can be made from pallets left over from building a house. To do this, you need to cut the pallet into two parts and connect them together at a slight angle.

Fig.29.

When making a swing seat, it is important not to forget about safety. It is advisable to glue all joints of the seat parts with wood glue or moisture-resistant PVA glue. Before final installation of the seat, it must be protected from moisture using varnish, paint or antiseptic. You can increase the comfort of the swing by using foam mattresses and pillows.

DIY metal garden swing

You can make a garden swing from metal yourself various types due to the strength of the material and the ability to give it almost any shape. However, it is impossible to make unusual garden swings without special bending and welding equipment. However, if you own welding machine, then you can easily make a simple but very reliable swing.

Metal swings can be hanging and garden, portable or stationary. Thanks to the strength of metal, swings can be made quite light and at the same time durable - this is their main advantage.

Making a support

With your own hands, it’s easy enough to make two versions of a swing support: stationary and portable. Both options are suitable for hanging and garden swings.

It is convenient to make a stationary support for a swing from a pipe with a diameter of 50 mm. Two pipes are fixed in the ground using cement-sand mortar. A crossbar from a pipe of the same diameter is welded to the top of the pipes. Two brackets are welded to the crossbar for hanging the swing.

Portable metal swing convenient to make from a square or rectangular section. The design of such a swing consists of two triangular posts connected to each other by a crossbar and a crossbar located in the lower rear part of the swing. Brackets for hanging the swing are welded to the crossbar.

Fig.32.

The canopy frame is made of square pipe 20x20 mm. As roofing material For metal swings, colored polybicarbonate is used. This gives the swing an interesting appearance.

Making a seat

A seat for a metal swing can be made similarly to a seat for a wooden swing, or it can have a metal frame.

For the metal frame, a square pipe of 20x20 mm is used. The frame is made of two pieces of pipe, welded at an angle of 100-110 degrees. Ears are welded to the frame, to which the chain will be attached. One eye is welded to the seat, the second to the back.

TO metal frame secure wooden blocks, which serve as the basis of the seat and backrest.

When making metal swings, it is important not to forget to protect the metal from corrosion. To do this, you first need to remove all possible pockets of corrosion that are present on the metal, then degrease the surface with a solvent and apply a primer to the metal. The final stage- This is the coloring of the swing.

The wooden elements of the swing must be coated with a wood antiseptic.

Regardless of whether you are planning to purchase or make a swing with your own hands, for children or for recreation, you are moving along the right way. A swing in a summer cottage is truly an irreplaceable thing. Children will definitely like this hanging swing. Garden swings are more suitable for the older generation. A swing at the dacha will definitely become a center of entertainment and a gathering place for the whole family.
