To hide the cardboard marks, cover the back of the seat with another piece of fabric, which needs to be placed on glue.

Cut the Velcro into four equal pieces and stick them crosswise onto the bottom of the bucket and the base of the saddle - with the bristles towards the bucket and the fluffy part towards the seat. Connect the two parts. Hooray! The ottoman is ready!

One of the simplest options is to prepare several boards of the same size, build a cross and connect them with a piece of wood. The base is ready.

Very often, things that serve us for quite a long time become boring and the following situation arises - it’s a pity to throw them away, but there’s also no great desire to keep them. This was the case with this ottoman; it was not yet very worn or disfigured in appearance, but I no longer had the strength to look at it. Therefore, I had to make a radical decision - to update and embellish. How exactly this happened, our article will tell you step by step - how to cover an ottoman with your own hands.

Materials:

fabric of your choice;
construction stapler;
screwdriver and screws;
glue gun;
sewing machine.

Let's get started - remove the top cover. This is what it looks like from below.

We open the bottom part of the lid; in most cases it is secured with staples, so by disconnecting this part of the lid, the staples can either be removed or simply bent.

We cut our new fabric for covering and try it on. If everything fits perfectly, close the corners tightly, staple the corners and sew them together.

Then we fasten the bottom with a screw, you can, of course, use the staples again, but it seems to us that it will be easier to disassemble the ottoman again.

After we are done with the top cover, we begin to look for places to attach the trim at the base of the ottoman. They are often hidden under the inner lining; in order not to tear out the entire inner lining, just pull its edge as shown in the photo above.

Now you need to decide how much fabric to use for the base. It is better to leave a margin of 3-4 cm on each side. Sew on the bottom part of the fabric (it is white in the photo).

Now the most painstaking and important process begins - marking the fabric. We wrap the base in fabric and use needles to mark the places where the seam will go in the future. For convenience, you can draw a line with a pencil in the stitching area.

When the fabric is upholstered on both sides, we try everything on the ottoman.

Now you can cut off the excess fabric and iron the joint with an iron, as shown in the photo.

Now it's time to attach the fabric to the top of the ottoman. First, fold the fabric like this.

Then we wrap it again, but on the inside of the ottoman.

Pulling the fabric tightly at the base, we begin to nail it with staples; it is best if the staples go side by side, one next to the other.

Ottoman or what?

Let’s first define the scope of the topic of today’s article. Any product belongs to one or another type in its class not for the sake of formality and not only for its functional purpose, but also for its manufacturing technology; We set ourselves the goal of making our ottoman as simple and inexpensive as possible.

The weakest points of cabinet furniture are the joints connecting the legs to the supporting base, so interior poufs are made either without legs at all (item 1 in the figure), or with invisible furniture legs-buttons. A utilitarian pouf for rooms with a floor that is not always perfectly clean is raised on legs, but so that they do not protrude beyond its outline in plan and do not catch the eye when viewed from a height of human height, pos. 2. If the legs extend beyond the contour of the seat itself, then this is no longer a pouf, but a banquette, pos. 3. If the supporting structure of a product of this kind is also visible, then a soft stool is obtained, pos. 4.

Note: a furniture button leg is a 1x15 nail with a concave plastic head on top, 20 mm in diameter and 5 mm in height. Legs with buttons are included with budget/economy cabinet furniture or, by default, custom furniture for self-assembly.

Round or square?

The seat of the ottoman is always soft, or the whole thing is soft and frameless, hence the name. A round ottoman is most often a classic interior design, so as not to cling to the corners with your feet and you can turn in all directions while sitting. Utilitarian poufs are often made square - this makes it much easier to attach both a folding and removable lid to the base box.

Note: rectangular ottomans are not made elongated, because This results in the loss of one of the main advantages of the pouf – compactness. With a seat length ratio of approx. up to 1:2, the usable area taken away is still equal to the square of the larger side. With further “stretching” of the seat, it increases more slowly, but again it turns out to be a banquette or a bench.

Dimensions

Since a pouf is most needed in a cramped room, where you need to spin around on it without getting up, its dimensions are smaller than those typical for other types of seats. Typical dimensions of a pouf for adults are a height of 350 mm, and the diameter of the seat or its square side is 300 mm. A child on an ottoman not only spins, but also fidgets, so a children's ottoman is made with a seat that is the same in plan. Possibly reduced to D(220...250) or (220...250)x(220...250); the sides are equal in length. However, a child needs a lower pouf height, 180...250 mm, depending on his height, but in a different proportion. If the height of an adult pouf is approx. 1/5 of the average height of a person, then the children's pouf should be made slightly higher, approx. 1/4 – 1/3.5 of the child’s height. This is necessary “for growth”, otherwise it will be necessary to either make a new ottoman about once every six months, or there may be anomalies in the formation of the child’s musculoskeletal system.

Soft

Soft interior poufs without legs are also called boudoir, although it would be more correct to call them harem poufs - the first poufs were brought to Europe by the crusading knights. Sleek harem sirens walked around their prisons, inaccessible to outsiders, in the lightest negligee or even what their mother gave birth to. In a hot climate without air conditioning, the touch of the most delicate parts of the body to hard surfaces and ribs of cabinet furniture irritated them extremely, and they were supposed to go to the call of the owner and master in a cloudless mood.

A classic boudoir pouf is a small bag made of selected jute burlap with a wooden circle tightly inserted into it to the bottom, reinforced from the inside with hoops and vertical whalebone stripes. Then carefully cleaned and combed horsehair was placed into the base container in spiral strands, also tightly kneaded. After this, the neck of the bag was sewn up and a camel hair pad was sewn to it. Next, a silk, brocade or muslin decorative cover with decorations was pulled over the workpiece. There was no cotton padding; it quickly became saturated with sweat and rotted. Ottomans of this design did not last long, but the then (and present) eastern rulers did not care at all about it.

Real boudoir

A round soft ottoman, better in comfort and much more durable than a classic boudoir, can be made from modern materials according to the diagram in Fig. on right. Unfortunately, it is not suitable for a square pouf - both the cover and the upholstery will creep into the corners. The base foot is assembled using PVA: it provides an adhesive layer that retains elasticity for many years. Nowadays, second-hand book dealers everywhere use PVA to restore books, and they are a picky and meticulous audience.

The technical fabric for the gaskets between the layers of foam rubber must be natural: jute matting or hemp burlap is best; The linen canvas doesn't stick well and stays in place, it's slippery. Synthetics, e.g. propylene matting is not suitable - PVA does not hold it well, and silicone and adhesives based on organic solvents corrode the foam rubber. After gluing the base, it is covered with the same technical fabric; you can simply pull the cylindrical sleeve with a sewn-in bottom tightly. A decorative cape is put on or thrown over the rough covering - it’s done.

The main thing when making such a pouf is to choose the right foam rubber (the brand numbers in the figure indicate its density in g/cubic dm). A sample of the material in the store is squeezed with your fingers until it stops. If you sharply release them, good furniture foam rubber “shoots off” instantly, literally without leaving their pads. If the foam rubber straightens quickly, without a residual dent, and is not noticeable to the eye, it is suitable as a filler for frame furniture, but not in our case. But technical foam rubber straightens out very slowly, and a depression remains on it for quite a long time (several seconds or even minutes).

Note: Furniture foam rubber with a density of up to 60 and even 85 is sometimes found on sale. It is even better suited for the lower layers of the base of a round soft pouf; the upper ones remain the same, density 25 and 35.

"Semi-soft"

It is still not recommended for strong men or portly matrons to sit on a “real boudar” ottoman in a modern design. In fact, in the old days, eastern fairies were valued for their magnificent physique (literally, in slave markets), but whalebone to strengthen the structure is currently unavailable due to the complete ban on whaling, and large-scale chemistry has not yet offered a full-fledged substitute for it. Therefore, it is better to make an interior pouf for corpulent heavy riders also frameless, but “semi-soft” from a stack of tires of the required height (see above). A single ottoman made from a tire from a small car or scooter is more suitable for a child, see below.

Durable from one tire

The previous model of the pouf will not last long if you lay it on its side and roll it, get mad at it, poke toys at it - well, those who have acquired miracle heirs know what they are capable of. If so, it is better to make a children's ottoman from one tire with a rough covering of increased wear resistance. It is advisable to place it on plastic screw legs for kitchen furniture, see fig. on right.

They are cheap, but monstrously strong, and no adult can turn them inside out - they are attached at 4 points. An additional advantage in this capacity is a large limit of height adjustment, which solves the problem of the ergonomics of an ottoman “for growth”. The disadvantage is that the best linoleum with a protective layer thinner than 0.6 mm is crushed, but competent parents do not lay linoleum on the children’s floor.

Features of the work are as follows:

Each subsequent section of rope is laid only after the glue under the previous one has completely hardened.
The free (running) end of the rope (especially when wrapping around the sides) is kept slightly taut, at the bottom left in Fig.
Having squeezed out the next portion of glue, press the rope tightly, without pressing with your fingers, otherwise the winding will turn out uneven.
Having laid the next piece of rope on the glue “sausage”, its running end is held without moving until the glue hardens.
The completed winding on the workpiece is impregnated with acrylic varnish (bottom right in the figure), regardless of whether a decorative cover will be put on it, because Only the winding will not last long with glue - it will start to get wet and come off.

Note: for a “real adult” pouf made from several tires, the described technology, contrary to the assertion of many sources, is of little use - in the gaps between the tiers of a stack of tires, it is difficult to lay the turns of the rope evenly and close to each other.

"Hard" poufs

An ottoman on a rigid base is somewhat more difficult to make, and it will require more materials. But “hard” poufs have a decisive advantage for small, cramped and utility rooms - the internal volume of the ottoman can be useful.

The simplest

In the simplest versions of a utilitarian ottoman, you still cannot store anything - the extremely simple and cheap technology does not allow organizing a container for anything in the ottoman. But such a seat can cost nothing at all, except for the material of the cape; however, it can also be sewn from available leftovers.

The most affordable base material in this case is empty PET bottles with a capacity of 2-2.5 liters; they are just right in height. How to make an ottoman from plastic bottles is shown in the figure:

The base is 2-tier; Each tier requires 14 bottles. Holes are cut in the bottoms of the upper tier containers into which the necks of the lower bottles fit tightly. Then the base is turned over, because the caps of the initially upper and now lower bottles will be the legs of the pouf. The entire package is tightened with tape, then foam rubber or synthetic padding with a thickness of 30 mm or more is placed on the bottoms of the bottles (20 mm is not enough, the protrusions of the bottoms will be felt as a “fifth point”. The rough lining is made of packaging cardboard, also on tape. There is no point in using more expensive materials as a base - the bottles will get washed out on the sides pretty soon, but in the meantime you can make the pouffe more substantial.

A more durable simple ottoman is made from cardboard tubes - cores from soft rolled materials, see next. rice. They are very durable and resistant, so it would be better to make the bottom and base of the seat from plywood, and wrap the base with fiberboard (item 6, you can use inexpensive rough, not painted or laminated); In this option, rough cladding for decorative trim will not be needed.

Note: if the simplest ottoman on a rigid base is needed “forever”, its base is made of 15 mm plywood (for drawings, see the figure on the right). The soft seat lining is the same as before. options. Rough trim is only needed on the seat; free-flowing decorative cape.

Unconventional option

An excellent basis for a durable simple pouf are also cable drums and wire spools. They are produced with a core diameter from 1 cm to 2-3 m or more. It is difficult to adapt the core cavity for storage, but you can arrange a hiding place there, which, as a rule, falls out of the attention of burglars; if it comes to a search by intelligence officers, they, of course, will probe everything with their instruments.

However, there is no particular point in looking for the cheeks of the cable drums of large numbers (on the left in the figure) on the base of the seat and the bottom of the ottoman. And not only because making a pouf out of them is quite a serious job even for a skilled craftsman. Large cable drums are returnable packaging, and return is usually stipulated by the manufacturer in the supply agreement. Therefore, finding a “new, good” large used cable drum is a matter of chance, and those that have reached their technical wear and tear will most likely turn out to be unusable.

It is much easier to buy cheaply, firstly, reels for computer cables and electrical wires with cardboard cores (in the center in the figure). In order for an ottoman made from such a reel to last for a long time, you need a little trick: its plywood cheeks need to be cut so that their protrusion beyond the core is 1.5-2 cm. If the cheeks are left as is, when the rider sits on the edge of the core, they will press with great force a smaller arm of the conventional lever, and the core will begin to crumple quite quickly. If the cheeks are cut off, the focus of pressure from the seated person will shift to the center of the seat; the larger arm of the lever will press on the core, the force from which will drop significantly.

Plastic coils from thin electrical and winding wires (on the right in the figure) do not need modifications to the base for the ottoman - they are already very durable. The disadvantage is that foam rubber and synthetic padding do not stick to them, but you can use a round pillow for the soft backing of the seat; pressing into the stiffening ribs of the cheeks, it will be quite securely fixed in place.

Note: poufs on a rigid frame (see figure) are durable, but have all the disadvantages of a pouf made from the cheeks of cable drums - expensive high-quality material is required, they are technologically complex, heavy, the internal cavity is not useful volume. It is advisable to make an ottoman in this way only if it has a complex shape and forms part of a set, on the right in Fig.

Ottoman chest

The ability to adapt the internal cavity of the pouf for storage in fairly simple ways is its important advantage. An ottoman in the hallway of a small apartment, for a workshop on the balcony; Perhaps to the country house or to the garage, consider that it must be made into a chest pouf - otherwise there may simply not be a suitable place for the things that are always needed on demand (for example, accessories for shoe care).

There are two “critical points” in the design of an ottoman with a container for the necessary little things: the supporting structure and the lid. Let's try to figure out how to make them simpler, from available materials and/or more convenient.

The traditional design of an ottoman-chest is shown on the left in Fig. This is essentially a real chest with soft lining. “Chests as chests” are large, so an ottoman-chest can be simplified by making only its supporting frame, bottom and seat base rigid (drawings in the center of the figure). In this design, with the specified dimensions (an enlarged ottoman for a workshop, in which a power tool is placed - a drill, an angle grinder, a jigsaw), plywood from 12 mm is needed only under the seat, and the bottom can be made from 3-4 mm plywood.

A hinged lid on a piano hinge, like the one on the left in the figure, is also generally not needed for an ottoman-chest - anyway, you need to get up to open it. A removable seat cover is sufficient; dimensions on the right in Fig. Cover skirt made of slats 30x30; base made of 12 mm plywood; the rest is furniture foam rubber 45 and upholstery.
