How to make a kennel, a dog bed from a barrel?

Sometimes store owners throw away old wooden barrels. After all, such containers eventually become unsuitable for storing cucumbers and sauerkraut. If you find such a trophy, then a dog kennel will cost almost nothing. You can buy an old barrel inexpensively and also save a lot of money.
- But you definitely need to wash it well inside and out, and let it dry completely for several days. To prevent drafts in the dog's house, if the boards come apart, connect them.
- If the gaps are small, you can place an open barrel in a pond with stones inside. The wood will get wet within 3-5 and fill the gaps.
- The dried container must be coated with an antiseptic and dried again. And if the barrel is in poor condition, first treat its surface with sandpaper. Now a hole is cut on one side of such a size that the dog can pass freely. Based on your preference, make it round, rectangular or arched.
- Level the area for the kennel, pour crushed stones here. Better yet, lay down the slabs.
- The old barrel must be well secured. Place 2 thick beams on the prepared platform and attach it to them. You can make two voluminous legs from boards and fix it on them.
- If you have a jigsaw, cut out decorations from wood for the entrance, for the kennel, and attach them with self-tapping screws.
- If there are no cracks in the barrel and sediment does not flow into it, you can leave the dog house as is. If they are available, for reliability it is better to cover the roof with roofing felt or polycarbonate. You can make a 2-slope roof from wood, and then cover it with any of these materials or using others.
Bed
As you can see, you can create it in two ways, cutting lengthwise and crosswise. But first you also need to prepare the container by washing, drying, painting it with an antiseptic or varnish.
- To make it easier for your dog to get around, make the cutout in the front of the bed a little larger than in other places. Treat the cut surface to ensure there are no sharp parts or splinters. This cutout can be straight or rounded.
- If the dog is large, then cut the barrel lengthwise rather than crosswise. To secure the edges, nail a board horizontally on one side and the other. Unlike the first option, this dog bed is unstable. Therefore, attach beams or curly legs to it from below, you will get a beautiful resting place for your pet.
- Place a blanket inside to help him sleep softly. You can sew a mattress into a round bed. To do this, measure the diameter of the barrel. Cut two circles of fabric this size. Determine the size of the arc, cut a strip of the same material to that length.
- Sew it on the side to the first and second circle to connect these parts. Leave a gap through which you insert a soft filler - padding polyester, holofiber or the like. Sew up the hole in the arms. A similar mattress is shown in the second top photo on the right. And underneath there is another one.
- This mattress has soft edges. The dog will position itself in the center of the bed and will not touch the sides of the barrel. To do this, you can start creating a mattress, as in the version just described, but stitch off the inner circle, leaving part of it unsewn. Place the filling here and sew up the hole. Now fill the outer ring using more stuffing and sew up the hole.
DIY coffee table from an old barrel
It can also be created by placing it on the bottom or sawing it in half. One old barrel will turn into two identical tables. Make shaped legs from boards to secure the workpiece. Place a wooden tabletop on top and secure it with self-tapping screws. To achieve a unified style, paint the wooden parts of the table the same color.
For the second idea, such a container is sawn crosswise in half. You will get blanks for two tables. Tempered glass is placed on top of them so that it does not move, use special fixing gaskets.
To decorate the table, you can put wooden dowels, beautiful stones, shells or photographs on the top of the barrel, and cover the top with glass.
If you need a high table, then do not saw the barrel, but make it from a solid one, this can even be used as a bar counter. By the way, if you want to make exactly this, the internal space of the container will also come in handy.
Make a vertical cut in an old barrel. Remove the separated element. Attach hinges to it and to the barrel, hang this door, fixing the handle on it. Make a round shelf inside or use a barrel lid for it. You can artificially age such a mini-cellar by covering it with stain of the appropriate shade.
If you want to make the bar counter even higher, then screw the legs to the lid and fix this tabletop on top of the container. Under it you can store glasses, beer mugs or other low items for your home bar.
If you cut out a tabletop, attach one edge to a block on the wall, and place the other on a barrel, you will get a large table.
Don’t throw away the remaining round scraps from this container, but attach them to the wall. Make sections of planks inside this hoop. Here you can store bottles by placing them horizontally.
Old barrels in interior decor
