On his example, you can see new design ideas, as well as other stuffing. After all, this is the first device from HTC, which came to us with a FullHD screen resolution. In general, screens with a high dot density and large diagonals will be the hallmark of all new smartphones this year. The device itself was introduced at the end of 2012, and HTC One was soon announced. This happened, albeit not immediately, but still in a fairly short time, which is unlikely to please those who are used to choosing a smartphone for themselves for a long time. But at the same time, fans of a constant upgrade will be satisfied, there is plenty to choose from within the model range of your favorite manufacturer.

The characteristics of HTC Butterfly are as follows. There is a 5-inch Full HD screen, a 4-core 1.5 GHz processor, 2 GB of RAM, 16 GB of internal memory, a convenient HTC Sense shell and an original design of a device that is unlike anything else. In addition, there is a capacious battery, which inspires hope that the smartphone will not be discharged before our eyes. Thus, it turns out the flagship, but in a very short term, because sales of HTC One, which replaced Butterfly, are already starting.

Design

HTC is not shy about experimenting with design, although some cardinal changes come to the smartphone line infrequently. Butterfly is a clear example of the fact that you are tired of exploiting the ideas embodied in, so we decided to try something new. How successful was this format?

First of all, we have to note with some sadness that glossy plastic is present in abundance here. The disadvantages of such a solution are obvious: the gloss is scratched, dirty, does not feel like an expensive coating. But the smartphone looks good on promotional photos.

Assembly as usual at a high level, no complaints, the quality is excellent. The design is monolithic and single, everything is tightly knocked down. If we could replace the back surface with something else, the impressions would be even better. And this despite the fact that there is a modification with a soft-touch coating. Why the company chose the gloss, which we do not particularly like, is unclear.

The device itself is quite thin, although it does not pretend to be a standard in its class: 141 x 70.5 x 9.08 mm, weight 138 g. Thus, the 5-inch device is perceived as a well-balanced device for such dimensions. Moderately large and not very heavy.

Interestingly, the smartphone turned out to be multi-colored, black and red are combined here. We have already seen something similar with HTC, usually this is what models of the music series with Beats Audio have. For my taste, this version looks good, not as boring as a plain one.

At the top, an elongated cutout attracts attention, in which the earpiece is located, which is highlighted in red. Next to it is the front camera and a set of sensors.

Also, a light indicator is implemented here, notifying about various events. Interestingly, it is also duplicated on the back of the case, so the indication of new notifications will always be noticeable, regardless of how the smartphone lies.

Below are three touch buttons with backlight and vibration, which can be turned off if desired.

The power button is moved to the top end and is located exactly in the center. The decision is debatable, in a long phone this method of controlling the device will not be convenient for everyone, you have to stretch your fingers in your palm. At the top is a microSIM slot, a 3.5mm headphone jack and a second microphone hole.

The sides of the smartphone are distinguished by inserts made of red plastic, which has a relief texture. This allows you to more securely hold the device in your hand, without fear of accidentally dropping it. On the right is the volume button, on the left there is nothing.

The microUSB connector is located on the bottom. It is closed with a plug, which was not very tight on the test sample, without completely closing the connector. It should have been either done differently, or removed altogether, and so it interferes more than it helps.

The back is smooth and glossy, a realm of fingerprints and dust. At the top is the camera lens, which is flush with the body, it does not protrude above the surface, forming an almost smooth plane. It is decorated with a bright red ring. A stylized Beats Audio logo stands out at the bottom. Since the design is non-separable, it will not work to list any other of the elements, the details end there.

Screen

The screen is of excellent quality, it continues the line of wonderful displays that have pleased HTC One X and its counterparts since last year, in particular, and. The surface is protected by Gorilla Glass 2, the display is called Super LCD 3, it is comparable in quality to IPS matrices. There are great viewing angles, very good behavior in the sun, so you can go for a walk and at the same time read messages on social networks.

The diagonal has become even larger, here 5 inches and a resolution of 1080x1920 pixels, which this season has become a hallmark of all flagship models on the market. With a very high dot density of 441 PPI, there is simply no question of any graininess or low-quality image, the picture is perfect. Another thing is that it will be very difficult to feel the difference with a high-quality HD screen.

During a direct comparison with the Sony Xperia ZL, it is easy to feel the difference, it is immediately clear who is the leader in image quality here.

Soft

The smartphone is proprietary software HTC Sense 4+, which hides Android 4.1.1. The role of the processor is entrusted to the Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro chip with a frequency of 1.5 GHz and Adreno 320 graphics. 2 GB of RAM ensure smooth operation with applications, but there is very little internal memory in the device. There is only 16 GB, some of which goes to system needs. Be that as it may, for a top-level model, such a storage capacity is very meager, here I would like to see at least twice as much or a slot for a card. After all, only 11 GB remains for the user, a very modest figure for a top-end device, especially given the low prices for memory. True, there is a model for Japan, equipped with a microSD slot, but this version is not supplied to us. As usual, 25 GB is allocated in the Dropbox cloud, but with our by no means fast mobile Internet, this does not seem like an urgent solution to the memory problem.

The performance itself is at a high level, now there are already more powerful models, however, there are no questions about Butterfly either. The menu works quickly, there are no delays, it is a pleasure to use the device.

Interface

The shell belongs to the previous generation, this is due to the release of a new version of Sense, which is currently only available for the One model. Whether something similar will appear for Butterfly is still unknown. I think that HTC will encourage buying new smartphones, leaving the current devices in their current state.

The lock screen displays a ring that can be pulled in any direction, thus opening access to the menu. At the same time, there are shortcuts or folders from the desktop, displayed at the very bottom. This allows you to quickly launch the most necessary functions without unnecessary actions. At the same time, you will not be able to set programs at your own discretion, the icons only duplicate those that are placed on the main screen.

Up to seven working zones are created in the menu, extra screens can be removed, so it is quite convenient to customize everything for yourself. Folders with icons are created, widgets are added. As usual, there are several design styles, plots are provided, wallpapers are set. The menu is three-dimensional, beautiful, scrolls quickly and smoothly, it's a pleasure to watch.

Telephone part

The book allows you to display data from different social networks, combining different sources into one list. You can also remove redundant information. As usual, the number of fields is very large, the new contact receives a variety of data, including different types of phone numbers, email addresses, quick communication tools, and other useful data. Numbers are divided into groups, they are assigned individual signals.

Calls are highlighted in a separate section, where different types of calls are marked with multi-colored icons. The list is general, the data is a long list. The smartphone has a convenient virtual keyboard with a quick search function for numbers or contacts. Speed dialing is provided.

The message menu is interesting in that it offers options for scaling fonts, and also allows you to create a group of SMS "hidden" from prying eyes, where you can store some personal data. Text can easily be transformed into MMS by adding media data to it. The HTC keyboard is very comfortable, besides, this device has a large screen, which is perfect for typing. It offers not only predictive input, when the smartphone automatically corrects typos and displays ready-made word options for typing, but also a faster typing method. In this case, you can type messages in a stroke, this is familiar from Swype, which appeared several years ago.

There are two applications for working with e-mail. The first can only work with Gmail, this mailbox is configured automatically when you enter your account information after turning on your smartphone. The second collects letters from other mail services. The phone normally understands various encodings, supports downloading attachments, and also knows how to send various data itself.

Applications

The calendar displays events for the day, week or month. There is a sound notification, the repeat mode is set, events are created with additional properties indicated.

You can create multiple alarms, select a repeat mode for them, set a sound notification by combining vibration and sound. The time is displayed in different time zones, there is a stopwatch and a timer.

The calculator has all the necessary functions.

The standard Google app store offers a wide range of useful programs.

Youtube is used to watch videos.

News and weather data are displayed in a separate program.

The voice recorder records sounds.

The flash will act as a flashlight.

Access to Facebook and Google+ is carried out using special applications.

Google Talk chat installed.

The search for data is working.

A separate application shows the stock price.

A variety of tasks are created with an indication of the priority of actions. Evernote is integrated, so text can always be supplemented with graphics or sound.

Displays time in different time zones.

There is a timer and a stopwatch.

A separate application from HTC combines accounts from different social networks into one section.

The file browser at the same time is able to work with "cloud" services. As usual, Dropbox stores up to 25 GB, which the user can dispose of at their discretion. Every buyer of a smartphone will have them at their disposal.

Camera

The smartphone integrates an 8-megapixel module with BSI (i.e. backlit), which is equipped with autofocus and LED flash. The only way to quickly start shooting is to use the shortcut on the lock screen. Otherwise, you will have to look for the icon in the menu, because there is no separate key to launch the application. Shooting starts almost instantly, you just need to touch the icon and drag it in a circle on the lock screen, after which the viewfinder will be displayed in just one second. On the left is a quick settings menu with key functions like flash, switching to the front camera. On the right there is a bar for zooming in, digital zoom will work with it. At the same time, the effects menu is activated from here, you can quickly go to the gallery. And also starts photo or video shooting, depending on the needs.

Camera settings:

Timer: 2, 5, 10 seconds.

Aspect ratio: 16:9 or 4:3.

Video quality: 176x144 pixels, 320x240 pixels, 640x480 pixels, 1280x720 pixels, 1920x1080 pixels.

Exposure, saturation, contrast, sharpness.

ISO: auto, 100, 200, 400, 800.

White Balance: Auto, Incandescent, Fluorescent, Daylight, Cloudy.

Burst shooting.

Touch shooting, face detection, auto smile detection.

Geotagging, automatic uploading of photos to Flickr, there is a burst shooting, creating a photo during video recording.

Video recording: stabilizer, mute.

Shooting scenes.

Effects.

Photo quality is very good, HTC Butterfly can be ahead of its classmates in certain situations, for example, this is due to shooting in low light, macro or HDR. Detailing, color reproduction, image clarity - all this is at a very decent level. I think that this is one of the best cameras among smartphones today. And for those who care about photo quality, you should pay special attention to the HTC smartphone.

Gallery

Pictures are divided into categories. There will be files that are stored in Facebook, Flickr, Dropbox, Picasa or Skydrive. you can also create hidden albums that no one will know about, except for the owner of the smartphone. A slideshow is launched to music, pictures can be easily transferred in various ways: via Bluetooth, to social networks or using installed programs. Also they are used as wallpaper or contact photo. The photo editor is also not forgotten, where, if desired, you can apply different effects to the pictures.

In addition to photos, support for video formats .3gp, .mp4, .wmv, .avi is announced. The set is not the largest, let's say, it is popular now. A smartphone simply cannot play mkv without an additional player. Therefore, it is better to install a separate player for this purpose. But due to the fact that there is not so much memory in the phone, 13 GB for video by modern standards is quite small, a 5-inch FullHD smartphone is not particularly interesting as a means for watching movies. Although the display itself is of excellent quality, the device could play the role of a portable video center, but due to the limitations of the built-in memory, it is of little note in this aspect.

Music

The player offers not only a music player, but also a number of other audio applications. For example, an application for identifying music, Internet radio is added here, and later it is allowed to transfer some of your programs so that everything is at hand.

You can see the track cover, media data, a music playlist is created, the song is used as a ringtone. If there is no picture for a song or album, then it can be added using the built-in function, it will be downloaded from the Internet. As such, the device does not have an equalizer, only the Beats Audio option is offered, with which you can automatically change settings while listening to music. It only works with connected headphones. A handy widget is offered, which is displayed on the lock screen. With it, it is convenient to switch songs.

The sound quality is good, though not the best on the market. But a smartphone can completely replace a separate player, especially if the owner of the phone replaces simple bundled headphones with something more outstanding.

Radio

The receiver is able to search for stations in automatic mode, RDS and sound playback mode through the speaker are supported.

Browser

To access the Internet, both the built-in application and Chrome, which is pre-installed on the smartphone, are used. It is convenient because it can synchronize with computers, so all data is easily and quickly transferred from one device to another. At the same time, it can affect the operating time of the smartphone, as it is somewhat gluttonous, so it is more efficient to use the HTC browser. He is in no other way inferior to him and works very quickly, smoothly and stably.

Navigation

The smartphone uses the standard capabilities of a Google device, offering original maps. Traffic jams are displayed here, routes are indicated that are laid in various ways: for drivers, pedestrians who move on foot or using public transport. There is Street View, when you can see a certain place on the map, photographed by Google machines. Maps work offline in different countries of the world, but for this you need to first save them in the phone's memory.

Connection

The smartphone works in GSM/GPRS/EDGE 850/900/1800/1900 and WCDMA 900/2100 MHz frequencies. There is UBS 2.0 for data synchronization with PC. Bluetooth 4.0 allows you to transfer data, as well as work with a phone paired with stereo headsets. There is NFC, Wi-Fi 802.11n with tethering and hotspot modes.

Battery

The smartphone has a non-replaceable battery with a capacity of 2020 mAh. The battery lasts for a day of work, from morning to evening, with an average load, the device withstands. In total, it turns out about 3.5 hours of active screen. In case of intensive use of the device, for example, in the navigator mode or searching for information on the Internet, the phone will have to be charged more often. But in general, the situation is not bad, the model behaves at the level of the same HTC One X +, but here the diagonal is larger, the resolution is higher, and the filling is even more powerful. That is, at least, you don’t have to sacrifice battery life. This is probably not so bad, although of course you want the smartphone to work all day in active mode from a single charge, but now only a few are capable of this.

Conclusion

The smartphone has an average vibrating alert, not the loudest speaker. The melody is heard in most situations, but you can miss a call on the street.

Against the backdrop of the announced HTC One, Butterfly's positions look much less confident. The difference in price between them is not so great, but at the same time there is a significant progress in materials, filling in the new model. Paying extra for a more interesting device will not have to be so much, given the high status of both smartphones.

I think that Butterfly's position could be more outstanding if HTC decided to supply us with a version with matte plastic, and at the same time with a memory card. Now, many are waiting for the HTC One, which certainly turned out to be a more attractive option at a similar price. The fate of HTC Butterfly will be the same as that of a butterfly: life for one summer, in this case a season.

With a price of 25-30 thousand rubles, the phone has many competitors, primarily HTC One, which is about to appear on sale to replace Butterfly. We must not forget about the beautiful and more practical version of the Xperia ZL. The Samsung Galaxy S4 will also be sold. HTC has created a beautiful, albeit not quite practical, smartphone. The lack of a slot for a memory card, the relatively small amount of built-in storage and a glossy case can become significant restrictions when choosing. At the same time, one cannot fail to note a certain charm, proportions that are convenient for a 5-inch gadget, good performance, a camera and a screen that can be called one of the best in its class.

The HTC Butterfly S has better specs than the HTC One, but the smartphone's build is a bit off. If the speed of the gadget is the most important for you, this model will suit you to the fullest.

The device is focused primarily on the Asian market, and is an updated 5-inch smartphone. The device is equipped with a fast quad-core processor (1.9 GHz), an Ultrapixel camera (which can also be found on the HTC One), and a powerful (3,200 mAh) battery. Although the phone looks a bit like its predecessor, the original HTC Butterfly, the developers have breathed new life into it with front-facing speakers and new versions of Android Jelly Bean and Sense UI.

Design

As mentioned above, HTC Butterfly S does not differ much in appearance from the previous model. The design of the device remains largely unchanged, with the exception of the added front-facing BoomSound speakers. This is a nice design innovation from HTC, as the sound is now directed straight towards the user instead of coming from behind or to the sides where it can sound muffled.

Speaking about the dimensions, it should be noted that the phone has a thickness of 10.6 mm, and with its large size it is very noticeable. The device weighs 160 grams, which is also above average, but the device cannot be called too heavy. In truth, it looks more bulky than most users would like.

Screen

As noted above, HTC Butterfly S comes with a large 5-inch LCD3 display with a resolution of 1080x1920 pixels. The screen is very sharp and shows details clearly, and the pixel density reaches 441 per inch. You won't see any annoying jagged icons around the edge of the image or blurry text.

Users immediately appreciated the rich and saturated colors on this display. They are not very bulky compared to AMOLED screens, but the image quality is very high.

The HTC Butterfly S's display isn't too bright. It peaks at 360 nits, which is fine for indoor use, but it will put a bit of extra strain on your eyes when viewing it outdoors.

Viewing angles are just fabulous. Colors won't fade even when you tilt your phone at the most extreme angles.

Control

Another feature that makes the HTC 901e Butterfly S positive is the presence of three standard control buttons. This allows you to easily return to the original menu by pressing the Home button located in the center once, as well as switch between running applications without any problems and waste of time.

The micro-SIM and card slots are located at the top of the device under the cover. The design of the smartphone may suggest that access to the microSD card may be difficult, however, this visual assessment is misleading. The slot is spring-loaded, so you won't have any problem removing the card. The power button is located next to the port, and it can also be used as an IR blaster, allowing you to remotely control the operation of the TV.

The body of the smartphone is gently curved, allowing it to fit perfectly in the palm of your hand. Unlike the flagship One, HTC Butterfly S is made of glossy plastic. Therefore, it is not surprising that the phone is covered with smudges and fingerprints after prolonged use.

Applications and services

Butterfly S is the first HTC phone to come preloaded with Android 4.2.2. JellyBean, although it still runs on UI 5. Some minor options have been added that relate to the operation of the operating system, in particular, screen lock settings.

You get access to quick settings - Daydream, as well as a battery percentage indicator in the status bar. BlinkFeed has also been enhanced with the ability to import feeds from WeChat and Instagram.

The HTC Butterfly S 919d also includes some useful apps such as a calendar, email service, music player (no separate video player), notepad, and weather forecast.

Functionality and memory

The basic functionality is very good. The phone book is pretty quick to access, as well as synchronize contacts, quickly go to the call log, favorites and dial buttons.

The HTC Butterfly S 901s has 16 GB of internal storage, which may not be enough if you are used to saving a lot of media files. Fortunately, the smartphone has a microSD slot for adding a memory card.

Internet and connections

The device is equipped with a full range of services for wired and wireless connections - Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, DLNA, HDMI, LTE, and NFC (which was not in the previous model). Unfortunately, the smartphone does not have the waterproof features that the original HTC Butterfly was equipped with, which can be attributed to significant shortcomings.

HTC Butterfly S comes preloaded with its own browser, as well as Google's mobile version of Chrome. Both are exceptionally good apps, but the HTC Browser has one key advantage - support for Adobe Flash. The browser also supports allowing you to search for words on a page and easily switch between full and mobile versions of sites. You can also save articles to read later and even view entire pages offline. Unsurprisingly, it all works surprisingly quickly and smoothly - just a little movement of your fingers to zoom in and out, and scrolling is instantaneous.

Camera

Instead of the 8-megapixel camera found on the previous model, the Butterfly S has a 4-megapixel f2.0 ultrapixel camera with a BSI sensor. You will be able to take good pictures in low light, but the strong compression algorithm tends to blur details.

However, shooting looks much better on video. The HTC Butterfly S camera records videos with a resolution of 1920x1080 pixels and a frequency of 30 frames per second. Noise can be noticeable even when shooting in broad daylight, but the colors look vibrant.

Auto focus turns on very quickly - the phone instantly changes the focus of objects near and far. You can also choose how to lock focus before shooting. You can also take 1 megapixel photos while recording video. The device provides good sound quality during filming.

Just like HTC One, Butterfly S has the ability to automatically display events in the gallery. There is also a 2.1-megapixel front camera that can be put to good use for video conferencing.

Specifications

Thanks to the phone's quad-core (1.9 GHz) Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 processor, the Butterfly S is slightly faster than the HTC One (which uses the same chip, but clocked at 1.7 GHz). Testing showed that the gadget processes commands a little faster than the Samsung Galaxy S4, which uses the same processor with a frequency of 1.9 GHz.

The battery of HTC Butterfly S has a capacity of 3,200 mAh, which allows it to work without recharging for a day and a half with moderate use. The smartphone has been tested by experts with standard settings, using two email accounts, Facebook and Twitter accounts and making regular calls.

Multimedia

The large and bright 5" 1080p display is a big advantage when watching videos and pictures, while loud and clear front stereo speakers provide great sound when watching movies and listening to music.

The built-in media player is easy to open and play almost all file formats, with the exception of Divx/Xvid-encoded movies - they are not supported on standard settings. However, you can find a huge number of different players on Google Play to remedy this shortcoming (MX Player is one of the more well-known offerings).

The music player is developed by HTC and offers a user-friendly interface and high quality. By default, the application displays your library, which is divided into two columns sorted by albums, artists, songs, and so on.

Advantages

As the review of HTC Butterfly S shows, the smartphone boasts a capacious 3,200 mAh battery that provides long uptime, a powerful processor and an excellent screen. Its camera performs well in low-light conditions, and the microSD slot offers the option to add more storage.

disadvantages

The glossy plastic used in the HTC Butterfly S case will pick up a lot of fingerprints and smudges. However, this cannot be called a serious drawback of the gadget - there are covers for HTC Butterfly S of various types on sale. A much more serious disadvantage are the shortcomings of its design.

So, the phone is not waterproof, unlike its predecessor. Moreover, the HTC Butterfly S firmware is not very high quality.

Conclusion

There is no doubt that the HTC Butterfly S, which costs less than $300, is a very high-quality phone. While its design isn't new or exciting, it deserves attention for its more powerful hardware specs than the flagship HTC One, albeit at a slightly higher price.

However, many would agree that design should play an important role in smartphones. In addition, gadgets in this price range should be made using high quality materials such as aluminum and glass.

At the same time, Butterfly S is available in three bright colors, which somewhat smooths out its uninteresting design.

After several weeks of smartphone use HTC Butterfly S I decided to combine all the material on it into one. Since I am not chasing the number of letters in the review, there will be a minimum of "water" and no longer relevant screenshots of benchmarks, but only the important points listed, in my opinion, and a lot of videos. Rushed…

The updated "butterfly" received a filling, as in the Galaxy S4 LTE (SoC Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 CPU: 4 core 1.9GHz Krait 300, 2Gb RAM, Adreno [email protected]) and performance is slightly faster than HTC One (CPU 4 core 1.7GHz, Adreno [email protected]). Wherein HTC Butterfly S received the same 5" FullHD Super LCD3 screen as in the previous model, but now covered with glass Gorilla® Glass 3.

HTC Butterfly S is available in several colors and, unfortunately, in a glossy case, but the Butterfly S smartphone received two speakers, like in HTC One, a microsd card slot and a capacious 3200mah battery.

Key Features of HTC Butterfly S :

  • 5.0" FullHD display with PPI 440, Corning Gorilla Glass 3
  • SoC: Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 clocked at 1.9 GHz, GPU Adreno 320 (450MHz)
  • 2Gb RAM
  • 16Gb internal memory + microSD slot
  • Main camera:
    • HTC UltraPixel Camera (4MP)
    • Pixel size 2.0 micrometers, sensor size 1/3", back-illuminated matrix
    • Dedicated HTC ImageChip™ 2 processor
    • F2.0 aperture and 28mm lenses
  • Front camera: 2.1MP (wide angle)

2G/ 2.5G - GSM/GPRS/EDGE:

  • 850/900/1800/1900 MHz

3G/ 3.5G - UMTS/ HSPA:

  • 850/900/1900/2100 MHz with HSPA+ up to 42 Mbps

LTE (model 901sworks in our LTE networks )

  • 1800 / 2100 / 2600 MHz
  • Wi-Fi®: IEEE 802.11 a/ ac/b/g/n (Broadcom BCM4335)
  • Bluetooth 4.0 with aptX™ support (Broadcom BCM4335)
  • FM, GPS/GLONASS, NFC
  • Infrared port (for controlling audio-tv-video equipment) - Sense TV
  • Beats Audio (two amplifiers)
  • Android 4.2.2, HTC Sense 5.0 shell
  • 3200 mAh battery
  • Dimensions: 144.5 x 70.5 x 10.6 mm
  • Weight: 160 grams

First impressions, screen, equipment HTC Butterfly S (901e) look at the video below, and impressions of the device after a few weeks of use read below.

The box is from HTC Butterfly S, as well as the bundle is exactly the same as that of HTC One.

2.1MP front camera: 88° lens with HDR.
Supports Full HD 1080p video recording.

On the right is an indicator of missed events, which is slightly larger than in One. I want to note the excellent work of the auto-brightness sensor. The brightness of the screen changes smoothly and correctly adjusts to the ambient light.

Excellent voice quality and signal reception.

3.5mm headphone jack. Power button (aka infrared port for controlling equipment)
and a second microphone for noise reduction

On the left under the cover is a metal tray for microSIM, and next to it is a slot for a microSD card. The whole thing is a little recessed into the case, so replacing or getting a microSIM or microSD card is not so easy.

For 2 thousand rubles. we get + 64gb (real 59gb) of space for music, photos, videos and documents, but I would like 32Gb of our internal memory for game caches and large applications that simply cannot be transferred to microsd without root. Initially, 10.25Gb is available from the built-in 16Gb.

The location of the power button is also not very good, but it protrudes a bit more than the button on the HTC One.

Metal volume rocker, also protrudes more
and it's easier to grope than in the HTC One

Micro-USB connector for battery charging (charging time from 1% to 100% - 3 hours 28 minutes),
as well as with support for the MHL standard. Main microphone hole.

Thickness 10.6 mm.
Due to the beveled edges does not look thick and fits well in the hand

Everything is assembled perfectly (no squeaks or cracks).

I really like the design of the smartphone and even the appearance of the back plastic cover. 160g of weight does not cause discomfort, like Nokia 920 with 185g.

HTC UltraPixel Camera (4MP), but without optical stabilizer.
I noticed that the peephole of the camera is scratched.

A rare occurrence when a complete headset is combined with the smartphone itself

As always, excellent sound quality due to two speakers on both ends of the screen (at the One level, or maybe subjectively better). Gorgeous sound quality in headphones (tested with Sennheiser IE 60), which is many times better than in HTC One, maybe the Butterfly S has a different audio chip or the Taiwanese set everything up as it should ... Of all the startphones that I had the most I liked the sound of Butterfly S.

Dual front stereo speakers with powerful amplifiers.

The Butterfly S feels good in the hand due to the rounded case back. If your hands are greasy or sweaty, then perhaps slipping out of the hands of the smartphone due to the glossy back cover, but so far there have been no falls). From the positive: there are no visible fingerprints on the back cover, as well as scratches, but time will tell.

Dimensions:

  • HTC Butterfly S(5") - 144.5 x 70.5 x 10.6 mm, 160 grams
  • HTC Butterfly (5") - 143 x 70.5 x 9.08 mm, 140 grams
  • HTC One (4.7") - 137.4 x 68.2 x 9.3 mm, 143 grams
  • Samsung Galaxy S4 (5") - 136.6 x 69.8 x 7.9 mm, 130 grams
  • OPPO Find 5 (5") - 141.8 x 68.8 x 8.9 mm, 165 grams

The screen is just super (5.0" Super LCD 3 FullHD 440ppi, Gorilla Glass 3). Excellent color reproduction, contrast and viewing angles.

The screen has an oleophobic coating. It glides very nicely across the screen with minimal friction. The best indicator of all smartphones. Closer to the edges, the glass is slightly rounded, which makes the use of various swipes mega convenient.

As in the case of the HTC One, the Butterfly S also has screens in warm tones (6500k) and cold tones (> 7000k). Also, the screens may vary in contrast and brightness. In any case, the screens are perfectly readable in the sun and quite a bit inferior in brightness to the iPhone 5 screen.

This time I got a screen in warm colors, which, in my opinion, the brightness is a little lower than it was on my HTC One.

Screens with warm tones have a clear advantage in more true blacks, while cool colors produce blacks with a more noticeable blue tint. In any case, the eyes quickly get used to both cold (the screen turns blue) and warm (yellow) screens.

As for the autonomy of Butterfly S (3200mAh battery) in video playback mode and maximum load, I recommend that you familiarize yourself with the test results below.

In mixed mode (web, twitter, mail, youtube, etc.), Wi-Fi is on, screen brightness is 30-40%, 3G is off, email and twitter synchronization is enabled. I received up to 7:30 - 8 hours screen time(In the same mode, HTC One showed about 5 hours of screen operation).

On average, I charge HTC Butterfly S every 1.5 - 2 days, while I charged HTC One almost every day.

In the mode with 3G enabled, the "butterfly" shows up to 6 hours screen time(twice as long as mine showed iPhone 5 in our Moscow networks with incl. 3g).

Performance (games, lag tests)

In this video, we will talk about the performance of HTC Butterfly S (901e) in games, benchmarks and perform a standard lag test by running various applications.

In everyday use (without games), the device does not heat up. In games, heating is felt, but not as much as on the SGS4.

With performance in most games (MC4, Wild Blood) there are no problems. Everything is playable and comes with maximum graphics. In Real Racing 3, fps can sometimes sag, like on all smartphones with a fullhd screen. An exception may be devices on the Qualcomm 800.

Practice with HTC One shows that a custom kernel will help to make everything smooth in Real Racing.

The speed of the operating system itself is not satisfactory. Everything works quickly and smoothly. SGS4 with its tachwiz lags behind in these indicators. Separately, I note that the browser in Sense puts the stock in tachwiz on the shoulder blades, both in terms of speed and, if possible, adjusting the text in real time depending on the zoom. With custom firmware, Butterfly S runs like a Nexus 4 and even launches programs faster.

Sense 5.0 overview

Since HTC Butterfly S has the same shell as HTC One, I recommend that you familiarize yourself with Sense 5.0 using HTC One as an example.
