Korean Horny Goat Weed. Korean horny goat weed - medicinal plant: photo, description, application

Description of the drug

Extract Korean mountain weed since ancient times it was considered an excellent remedy, strengthening the immune system and restoring vitality. Korean horny weed is the basis for the creation of infusions, extracts, tablets, widely used for the prevention and treatment of a whole range of diseases, including viral etiology. Horny goat weed is recommended for people of different age categories, but it is especially indispensable for people in the older age category (elderly and old age).

Korean Horny Goat Weed extract inhibits the aging process of cells better than any vacuum massage by a professional massage therapist, prolonging a person’s lifespan. Regular use this drug naturally prolongs youth. Horny goat weed restores bone tissue, therefore it is used as a means for the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis. The drug helps restore and strengthen joints and bones, replenishing calcium and magnesium deficiency in them. The cost of such an extract is much lower than its chemical analogues.

One of the most active and valuable elements of Korean horny weed extract is Icariin, which protects the liver from negative impact antibiotics and toxins, it also has a positive effect on blood sugar levels and stimulates blood circulation. Icariin improves metabolism in organs and tissues, stimulates oxygen transport to muscles, thus increasing muscle mass and performing the function of a natural anabolic.

Horny goat weed has a positive effect on the beauty of the body of both men and women, creating the effect of a high-quality therapeutic massage that corrects the figure. This is why horny goat weed is often taken by athletes as an alternative drug instead of unsafe synthetic steroids. Girls and women buy horny weed extract if they have menstrual irregularities.

And, nevertheless, Korean mountain weed gained its fame not as a medicinal drug, but as an aphrodisiac that helps with sexual weakness. That's why people called it "neo-Viagra" of plant origin. No less valuable is the neotropic effect of Horny Goat Weed.

Indications for use

Korean horny weed extract is recommended for use for diseases and pathological conditions:

  • renal disorders;
  • joint pain;
  • to stimulate performance;
  • osteoporosis;
  • impotence;
  • to reduce pain during menstruation;
  • during menopause;

  • with neuroses, hysteria.

Latin name: Epimedium koreanum Nakai.

Chinese name: Chaoxian yinyanghuo (Chaoxian yinyanghuo).

Family: barberry.

Form: herbaceous perennial.

Botanical description

Korean Horny Goat Weed has a thin rhizome that is located horizontally in the soil. The stems of the plant reach a height of 40 cm. There are no leaves near the root part, but sometimes there are specimens with a pair of leaves of the same length. With this development, flower stalks are located here. The leaves on the stems are solitary, attached with long petioles. Their shape resembles a heart, the structure is leathery, and the bottom plate is covered with hairs. In adulthood, the pubescence disappears and the surface becomes smooth. Hairs remain only on the petioles in small quantities.
In April–May, a short flowering raceme is formed, sometimes slightly branched. The bracts are egg-shaped, the flowers reach a diameter of 20 mm. Sepals are lanceolate, pointed, white or pinkish. The petals are most often dark lilac, but sometimes white. The spur is much longer than the sepals, pointed, light yellow in color. The fruits ripen in June or July and are oval-elongated capsules with an elongated column. Each contains from 6 to 8 seeds.

Growth

Korean mountain weed is very rare in Russia and only in the Primorsky Territory. Therefore, it is included in the Red Book and is protected by the state. The plant also grows in Korea, Northeast China, and Japan. Dense forests are well suited for mountain weed, mainly mixed type or oak.
Cultivating the plant is very difficult. On this moment this happens only at the Mountain Taiga Station of the Russian Academy of Sciences near the city of Ussuriysk. Horny goat weed is cultivated as a medicinal and decorative look in some Asian countries.

Chemical composition and biological activity

For medicinal purposes, you can use dried or roasted Korean Horny Goat Weed herb. It contains the maximum of valuable substances: flavonoids, glycosides, alkaloids and saponins. The rhizome contains steroids and aliphatic hydrocarbons. According to the standards adopted in China, the amount of icarisides (C33H40O15) in terms of dry matter should be from 0.5%.
The herb is used as an aphrodisiac, which has estrogenic and gonadotropic effects. It is also used as a tonic, promotes contraction of the smooth muscles of the uterus and has a diuretic effect. It is believed that Korean horny weed extract activates the yang energy of the kidneys, has a beneficial effect on the body's condition during rheumatism, and strengthens cartilage and bones.

Application

In Korea and China, preparations from horny weed are used to increase potency, for insomnia, psychasthenia, anemia and heart failure. They are given to women in labor to facilitate and speed up the process of childbirth instead of drug stimulation. The herb is also used for impotence, wet dreams, joint pain with numbness and muscle contraction, and during menopause.
To date, no data on contraindications for the use of Korean horny weed have been identified.

Epimedium, known as horny weed, is a plant used in traditional Chinese medicine as an aphrodisiac and has been shown to act as a testosterone booster in animal studies (no human studies have been conducted). Can also be used as a cognitive booster and treatment for cardiovascular diseases.

basic information

Horny goat weed is a plant (Epimedium) that exhibits aphrodisiac and testosterone booster properties. Also called "horny goat grass", the name came about after people noticed that goats and sheep became more frisky after eating epimedium, which grows near the fields where they graze. Also sometimes referred to by its active ingredient, . Icariin is a prenylic flavonoyl and exhibits most of the properties of horny weed. One study on rats noted that horny weed in high doses increased testosterone production, and moderate doses had beneficial effects on bone health. does not increase testosterone levels in women, but it active substances, icaritin and desmythylicaritin, increase estrogen levels in postmenopausal women. The plant acts as an aphrodisiac on both sexes, and the increase in gender-specific hormone has a beneficial effect on both men and women.

Horny goat weed: instructions for use

An increase in testosterone production in rats is observed when using 200 mg/kg of 40% extract (80 mg/kg), the equivalent dose for humans is:

    800 mg icariin for a 60 kg person

    1,200 mg icariin for a 90 kg person

    1,600 mg icariin for a 120 kg person

Studies using lower doses of icariin (1-10 mg/kg) are equivalent to:

    10-100 mg icariin for a 60 kg person

    15-150 mg icariin for a 90 kg person

    20-200 mg icariin for a person weighing 120 kg

A study looking at the effects of icariin on postmenopausal women and bone health noted that taking 60 mg of icariin daily was beneficial, and is the current minimum optimal dose. This dosage is also within the equivalent of the required norm that has a beneficial effect on rats.

Composition and structure

Compound

Goryanka is the name herbaceous plant genus Epimedium of the Barberry family. is the active ingredient of the plant. The genus Epimedium contains (specific plants are indicated in parentheses):

Structure

Icariin is a prenylated diglycoside of kaempferol. Structurally, icariin looks like this - a prenyl group is attached to a kaempferol molecule (shown below, the branched end on top of the hexagon), and two sugar molecules are attached to them; a glucose molecule R2 and a rhamnose molecule R1. Three other known compounds found in horny weed, epimedin A-C, have the same backbone, but two different sugar molecules in place of R1 and R2. The molecular weight of icariin is 676.67 g/mol. A similar compound is icaritin, in the structure of which –OH groups stand in place of sugar molecules (R1, R2), and desmethylicaritin, in which –OH groups stand in place of all R molecules. Both of these compounds coexist in horny weed.

Pharmacology

Absorption into the intestine

Due to the presence of an enzyme, icariin is unstable in the human intestine. , as well as three other horny goat weed compounds (epimedin A, B and C), as well as prenylated flavonoids, are each broken down through hydrolysis into its own metabolite in the intestine. In most cases, rhamnose is cleaved from these four compounds. Combined use with a lactase inhibitor increases the absorption of active ingredients, maintaining 40-62% of the original composition of icariin. Without the use of a lactase inhibitor, the bioavailability of icariin is approximately 12%. Icariin is metabolized to baohuoside I, which has an identical structure but without the glucose residue. Loss of the glucose moiety increases passage into the intestinal membrane. Absorption of baohuoside (and similar compounds) is reduced due to rapid efflux back to the lumen, active transport mediated by MRP2 and BCRP (breast cancer resistance protein); inhibition of MRP2 increases the absorption of baohuoside I. Increasing concentration of baohuoside reduces the effectiveness of efflux. Once in the intestine, baohuoside is not further metabolized due to the lack of corresponding intestinal glycosides (in rats and in vitro). The outflow of icariin from the intestinal wall into the intestinal lumen occurs due to the P-glycoprotein efflux pump. Poor absorption in the intestine, but the combination of icariin with P-glycoprotein inhibitors (ecdysteroid and MRP2 inhibitors) improves the absorption of baohuoside I.

Intestines

If icariin is not absorbed, it may be sent to the intestines and converted into the bacterium icariside II, a more erectogenic compound than icariin.

Indicators

When 10 mg/kg icariin was administered intravenously to rats, the half-life was 0.562+/-0.2 hours and the elimination rate constant (Ke) was 1.361+/-0.556 per hour. However, another study using the same dose of icariin by injection found that the period The half-life is 170+/-75.1 hours, indicating variability (Ye et al. 1999). When administered orally at 4.5 mg/kg icariin, the Cmax in rats is 3.37+/-1.42 mg/L, the AUC is 40.6+/-5.73 mg/h/L, and the half-life is 10.9+/-1.35 hours. Elimination rate constant is 0.064+/-0.1 per hour. A study using 1.64 g/kg horny weed (4.38 mg/kg icariin) orally showed a Cmax of 2.41+/-0.2 mcg/mL, AUC of 23.62+/-1.37 mcg/h/mL, Tmax 1.55+/-0.53 hours and half-life 0.11+/-0.07 hours. The same study compared the isolated use of Horny Weed to a combination of two other herbs (Nepal sorrel root and Ficus volosum, three major herbs in Chinese medicine), and noted that Cmax (3.13+/-0.29µg/ml) and AUC (30.84+/- 3.68 mcg/h/ml) is higher and the half-life (0.35+/-0.32 hours) and Tmax (2.06+/-0.15 hours) are longer when used in combination. It is unknown which of the 8 compounds in the herbal combination improved the pharmacokinetic profile of icariin. Another Chinese herbal combination using horny weed (Er-Xian) at a dosage of 4.8 g/kg orally does not reach the level of 4.8 g/kg in all parameters (Cmax, AUC, half-life and elimination rate constant), but the absorption of icariin is increased , since icariin accounted for only 19% of total weight combinations of herbs. The pharmacokinetics of icariin are favorably improved when used in combination with other herbs or herbal compounds, but it is not known which ones.

Removal

Icariin is excreted through bile excretion or is transported with bile salts into the intestinal lumen and then excreted from the body in feces. Use in combination with P-glycoprotein inhibitors slows the elimination of icariin from the body, possibly due to the aforementioned inhibition of intestinal efflux.

Neurology

Kinetics

Icariin is able to cross the blood-brain barrier, after intravenous administration, icaririn and three diglycoside compounds (Epimedium A-C) are found in the brain, in greater quantities Epimedium C. Icariin is mainly localized in the sciatic nerve. In one study, after intravenous administration of 20 mg/kg icariin liposomes, approximately 1.83% of the administered dose was found in the brain, and neuronal levels exceeded 0.2 μg/g brain weight. It can penetrate the brain, but in small quantities.

Neuroprotection

Icariin has neuroprotective effects by inhibiting pro-oxidative and pro-inflammatory markers in response to stress, and also slows the decline in cognitive abilities caused by injections of 60 mg/kg D-galactose. The authors of the in vitro studies suggest that icariin may protect neurons from damage caused by lipopolysaccharide (a pro-inflammatory substance) and, theoretically, from aging (assessed in a rapidly aging mouse model). High dose icariin (75-150 mg/kg body weight) improves cognitive biomarkers in these rats, such as superoxide dismutase and glutathione. One study found that icariin exerts neuroprotective effects through SIRT1 expression and subsequent PCG-1a expression.

Effect on bones

Osteoporosis

The authors of in vitro studies suggest that icariin is more effective than genistein in preventing osteoporosis, as it is more osteogenic (bone-forming). A similar effect was observed in rats, but not in comparison with genistein. In a study of postmenopausal women, using a daily combination of soy isoflavones (3 mg genistein and 15 mg daidzein) with 60 mg icariin for 2 years, bone loss was significantly reduced.

Estrogenicity

Icariin derivatives, icaritin and desmethylicaritin, exhibit estrogenic effects on breast cancer cells in vitro. This discovery came after the study authors noted that these derivatives increased the weight of the uterus of an immature mouse and prolonged estrus in a sexually mature mouse. This led to a study that found that horny weed increases estrogen levels in menopausal women. Icariin itself does not exhibit a proestrogenic effect, unlike its metabolite icaritin, the effect of oral administration of icariin is uncertain. Icaritin and desmethylicaritin are also found in horny goat weed leaves. Another study in which men received 50 g of extract hot water from downy mountain weed, did not indicate estrogenicity during the entire study period. Perhaps the above result (estrogenic in women, but not in men) is explained by the fact that icariin and related structures have estrogenic and antiestrogenic effects, and the final result depends on the circumstances. A possible structural explanation for the above action is the hydroxylation of the 4" carbon of the flavonoid backbone, which gives the flavonoid estrogenic properties. The 4" carbon in the icariin structure in the above image is R3, and desmethyliscaritin has a hydroxyl group here. Thus, the 7" carbon in the A ring may also be involved in estrogenicity. The estrogenic effects caused by icariin and related compounds are complex, as is the case with most bioflavonoid compounds. However, this does not affect the use of the substance as a testosterone booster.

Effect on hormones

Testosterone

Oral administration of 1-5 mg/kg icariin causes significant changes in erectile potency in castrated rats and minimal changes in testosterone levels. 1 mg/kg of icariin restores testosterone levels after penile injuries to baseline, while 5 and 10 mg/kg have no effect. The absence of any results was noted in testicularly removed rats; taking 1 and 10 mg/kg icariin had no effect on testosterone levels. A study using 200 mg/kg (reduced purity, 40%; bioequivalent dose of 80 mg/kg) icariin for 7 days noted that in the chemically castrated group (mean testosterone levels 0.78+/-0.44 ng/ml) icariin increased levels testosterone three times (10.93+/-2.03 ng/ml) compared to the control group (3.01+/-0.41 ng/ml). LH and FSH values did not differ between groups. The mechanism of action has been hypothesized to occur in the testes, as previous studies in testicularless rats showed no change in blood testosterone levels, although differences in dosage may have played a role, as one study in cavernous tissue showed a difference at a 1 mg dosage /kg, and higher dosages showed a slightly suppressive effect (compared to the control group). The equivalent human dose of 80 mg/kg pure icariin (based on body surface area) is 12.8 mg per kg body weight or 1152 mg for a 90 kg person. Increases testosterone levels, but no human studies have been conducted on this topic.

Impact on the sexual sphere

Erection

Icariin is a selective inhibitor of the PDE5 enzyme with an IC50 value ranging from 0.75-1.1 mm depending on the PDE5 isoform and with an EC50 value of 4.62 mmol/l with increasing cGMP in the corpus cavernosum; Icariin has 100 times greater affinity for PDE5 than other PDE isoenzymes. This effect can be enhanced by modification of the two hydroethyl ether residues into the compounds, which increases inhibition by 80-fold, but such modification does not occur in nature. Icarin in an amount of 10 mg/kg (100 mg for a person weighing 60 kg) demonstrates pro-erectile action, the effectiveness increases with reuse. High efficiency was achieved in an animal model of erectile dysfunction (related to blood flow) using 5-10 mg/kg icariin for 30 days, the equivalent for a 60 kg person is 50-100 mg. There are other compounds in the Epimedium genus that have PDE5 inhibitory potential, for example, icariside II from the plant Epimedium wanshanense (the potency is not significantly different from that of icariin, but the potency is half that of Viagra). In addition to its role as a PDE5 inhibitor, icariin is a potent pro-erectile agent. But the effectiveness is lower than that of Viagra. Low doses (1-5 mg/kg) improve nitric oxide synthase (NOS) expression and iNOS expression) in addition to PDE5 inhibition. The effects on iNOS and nNOS were not significantly different at any dosage (1 mg, 5 mg, 10 mg/kg), suggesting that low doses may also produce beneficial effects, but through a different route. Icariin may also stimulate nitric oxide signaling by increasing the expression of NOS enzymes, which may work synergistically with PDE5 inhibition. Icariin promotes increased axonal growth in the pelvic ganglia in vitro, which may be associated with activation of P13K and MEK/ERK. The beneficial effects on neurons can extend to the pelvic area.

Interaction with other substances

Yohimbine

Yohimbine has been studied for erectogenic properties (drugs for erectile dysfunction). A study using yohimbine and sildenafil (Viagra), which have the same PDE5 inhibitory effects as icariin, found that they act synergistically in increasing intracavernosal pressure and erection. Theoretically, yohimbine and horny weed may exhibit synergistic pro-erectile effects, but this has not been directly demonstrated.

P-glycoprotein inhibitors

P-glycoprotein inhibitors, such as ecdysteroids or capsicum carotenoids, inhibit the efflux protein known as P-glycoprotein. Efflux protein is responsible for moving icariin into the intestinal lumen after absorption, which is also the main excretory pathway after combining with bile acids to prevent reabsorption. Use of icariin in combination with P-gp inhibitors increases the AUC of icariin and may therefore increase the bioactivity of icariin (although this has not been demonstrated). P-glycoprotein inhibitors may increase the bioavailability of icariin.

Safety and toxicity

No studies have been conducted on possible toxicity, but the most high dosage(200 mg/kg) icariin, which was used for 7 days, showed no toxic effects in rats.

Epimedium or Goryanka is a genus of perennial garden herbs family Barberry. The genus contains about 50 species, representing, thanks to their beautiful foliage and unusual bright flowers high decorative value. These plants are often used to decorate gardens in Western Europe, recently they have become increasingly popular in Russia. Some of them, for example, Goryanka grandiflora and Goryanka Korean, in addition to being decorative, also have an important medicinal value. They are aphrodisiacs, stimulate the secretion of sex hormones, increase sexual desire in women and men, and have a general strengthening effect. Under natural conditions, the mountain weed can be found in the foothills of the Caucasus, the Alps, Far East, in Southern Europe, North-West Africa, East and North Asia.

Botanical description

Plants of the genus Goryanka are found in damp mountain forests, in the foothills and in forest clearings, gardens, meadows, and bushes. They are very unpretentious, can grow almost anywhere, both in the shade and in the open sun, and are resistant to temperature changes; only in severe frosts can some evergreen species freeze slightly. Reproduction is carried out by seeds and dividing the bush.

The rhizome is strong, long, creeping, and has many branches. Grows horizontally from the center to the periphery. At 5–6 years of life, the gradual death of the central inner part of the bush begins.

The height of the shoots, depending on the species, varies from 15 to 75 cm.

The stem is thin, erect, covered with reddish-brown bark.

The leaves are dense, leathery, predominantly basal, located on long petioles, and bright green in color. If the distance between the leaves is 1–2 cm, then the plants form dense bushes, and if it is 3–7 cm, they are looser. The shape of the leaf blade can be heart-shaped, lanceolate or elliptical. The edges of the leaflets can be wavy, smooth or finely toothed. Some types of plants along the edges and along the veins of the leaves are colored bright purple or Orange color, which increases their decorative effect.

Interesting: Regarding the discovery of the medicinal properties of Horny Weed in China, there is a legend according to which a shepherd grazing animals in the field where the plant grew discovered a significant increase in their sexual activity. Among Chinese healers, epimedium received interesting name- “the grass of the lustful goat.”

The flowering period lasts all summer. The flowers are collected in simple or double-branched loose racemose inflorescences with a pair of leaves at the base. The calyx consists of 8 sepals arranged in two rows one below the other. The inner sepals look like petals. The corolla (diameter 0.5 - 2 cm) of an unusual shape consists of four petals, which can be divided or form a ring. Some plant species have long or short hooked spurs on their petals. The colors of the flowers are different: purple, white, yellow, etc.

The fruit is a pod-shaped bivalve capsule. When the fruit ripens, the smaller dorsal valve falls off and opens the lower valve, which carries small seeds.

Chemical composition

The medicinal properties and composition of horny weed have now been studied in some detail by Chinese scientists. It has been established that the grass and rhizomes of the plant contain the following active substances:

  • alkaloids (deoxymethylicariin, magnoflorin);
  • saponins;
