Fittings for HDPE pipes - compression, brass: connection methods. Types and installation of fittings for HDPE pipes Buy connections for HDPE pipes

Due to the widespread popularity of various types polyethylene pipes The demand for connecting elements called fittings is increasing. HDPE fittings for pipes allow installation easily and in a short time. IN this moment enterprises produce many different connections. Fittings for HDPE pipes are made from various types of polyethylene, copper or brass.

Fittings for HDPE pipes are used:

  • For connecting pipes with the same diameter.
  • For joining pipes with different diameters.
  • For arrangement of branches provided for in the pipeline diagram.
  • For installation of pipe turns.
  • For installing a plug on a PE pipe.
  • For connecting pipes with different fittings.

The connection points of PE pipes must be:

  • Reliable.
  • Durable.
  • Waterproof.
  • Resistant to possible exposure to chemical elements.

Classification of fittings

Professional pipeline installers distinguish the connection of HDPE pipes with fittings by:

  • Installation method: compression, welded, electric welded.
  • Stiffness: flexible and rigid.
  • Connectors: detachable and non-detachable.

There is another classification of connecting elements:

  • Straight, used for joining HDPE pipes of the same diameter.
  • Reducing, used when connecting pipes of different diameters.

Let us analyze in more detail the first classification of fittings.

Fittings for various pipe connection methods

Depending on the chosen method of pipeline installation, there are:

  • welded fittings;
  • electric welded connecting elements;
  • compression fittings.

Welded connection elements

Welded fittings can be produced in two ways:

  1. by the ebb tide method, occurring under high pressure(cast fittings);

  1. by butt welding of small sections of pipes (welded fittings).

Welded fittings are available in diameters from 63 mm to 315 mm.

This type of fitting is designed for connecting pipes by welding. Not high price welded fittings determines a wide range of their applications. Welded connecting elements can be used to make almost all branches and plugs provided for by the pipeline design.

Most often, welded fittings are used during installation gas pipelines and systems in which the temperature of the transported liquid does not exceed 40ºС.

Electrically welded connecting elements

Electric-welded or thermistor fittings are used to install pipeline structures in hard to reach places, that is, where to carry out the usual butt welding impossible.

Equipped with heating wire located on the connecting parts. Under the influence of temperature, these spirals heat up and melt the polyethylene pipe. After cooling, a strong weld is obtained.

Compression connectors

Compression fittings for HDPE pipes are designed to connect pipes without welding. With the help of such butt elements, a detachable connection is obtained.

Fittings of this type consist of:

  • polyethylene body;
  • sealing rings located at joints;
  • clamping rings protecting connections from mechanical damage;
  • bushings that press the pipe;
  • caps and nuts that securely cover the joint.

Issued from various materials. The diameter of the connections varies from 16 mm to 110 mm.

Features of installation with compression fittings

To correctly connect pipes or make the necessary branches with compression fittings, you must follow the following instructions:

  1. The HDPE pipe is prepared and the compression fittings are unscrewed several turns.
  2. Markings are applied to the pipe indicating the depth to which the pipe must be inserted into the fitting. Before installation, it is advisable to lubricate the section of pipe intended for joining with water or a light soap solution.
  3. Up to the drawn mark, the pipe is inserted into the prepared fitting. For complete insertion of the PE pipe into sealing ring it will take some effort. Otherwise the connection will not be tight.
  4. The cap nut is tightened until the end of the thread.

At correct installation compression fittings create a fairly strong and airtight connection.

Separation of fittings according to connection rigidity

According to the degree of rigidity, fittings are distinguished:

  • Tough. Such connections completely eliminate the possibility of pipe movement.

  • Flexible, in which longitudinal movement of pipes by 3–5 mm and rotation of pipes by small angle. When using a flexible fitting, all the properties necessary for the connection point are preserved unchanged.

Flexible connections are most suitable for laying pipelines in the ground, but are also more expensive. Therefore, they are used only in cases of extreme necessity.

For the installation of simple pipeline systems, rigid fittings are often used.

Types of fittings distinguished by the detachability of the connection

When installing a pipeline, both detachable and permanent connections may be required. This is determined by the location of the pipe joint and its application. For example, HDPE pipes for water supply: fittings at the first stage of installation are used to connect the pipeline with pumping station. At some point in time the pump may need to be replaced and a detachable connection will make the necessary work as simple as possible.

Plug-in connections

In most cases, installation is carried out with the compression fittings described above. But there are other ways to arrange such a junction:

  • Flange connection. A cast or brass flange is attached to the pipe by welding. This type of connection is mainly used for pipes large diameter or joining a polyethylene pipe to a metal one.
  • Threaded connection. Pipe fastening is carried out using threads prepared in advance on pipes and fittings. Considered the least reliable. Can be used for laying cable pipelines or systems with low fluid pressure.
  • Socket connection. It is used extremely rarely. It is carried out by fixing one end of the pipe in the extension of the fitting or the other end of the pipe. Most often used for laying cable pipelines.

For detachable connections may be applied brass fittings for HDPE pipes.

Permanent connections

Permanent connections are most often used to connect structures located underground or in concrete, since this type is considered the most reliable. Pipe welding can be carried out in the following ways:

  • Butt. The most common method of joining pipes of the same diameter;
  • Socket welding. For this method of joining pipes, fittings with an internal diameter equal to the same parameter of the pipe are used.
  • Press or edge welding. It is used for joining pipes to structures, for example, wells.
  • Electrofusion welding. It occurs using electrofusion couplings and is considered the most reliable connection method.

To create a permanent connection, cast and electric-welded fittings are used.

Types of fittings

All fittings differ in their design features and, accordingly, the scope of application. Depending on this, fittings can be divided into:

  • Couplings come in three main types:
    • Equal bore, connecting pipes with the same diameter.
    • Compensation, mainly used to switch to a pipe with a smaller diameter.
    • Flanged, used for joining pipes with a large diameter.
  • Adapters. With their help, various fittings or another type of pipe, for example, metal, are connected to the pipeline.
  • Bends. They are used to change the direction of pipes and rotate the system. Standard bends are available with 45º, 66º or 90º rotation capabilities. Some companies produce fittings according to customer specifications. If installation of the system requires bends with a different degree angle, then such a fitting can always be ordered from the manufacturers.
  • Saddles. Designed for arranging various branches. The saddle for the HDPE pipe can be of two types:
  • Clamps that compress pipes from all sides.
  • Slips used to cut new piping into an existing system.
  • Crosses and tees. They are used for installation of pipeline branches and for connecting other devices to the network.
  • Plugs. Used to temporarily shut off the incoming liquid or gas into a pipe.

A certain type of fitting is intended for installation specific design pipeline.

Fittings are produced to facilitate the assembly of polyethylene pipes. A correctly selected set of connecting elements will minimize the time required to install the pipeline system and greatly facilitate the work of connecting pipes.

Polyethylene compression fittings are crimp fittings connecting parts compression type for installation of polyethylene pipes PE 80 and PE 100. Compression fittings for are produced by casting from polypropylene copolymer. Polyethylene compression fittings are made with internal and external threads various forms: compression couplings, compression tees, compression bends and saddle compression bends, compression plugs and flanged compression connections.

HDPE compression fittings are produced with a diameter from 16 mm to 110 mm and with a working pressure from 10 to 16 atmospheres (Bar): for a diameter from 16 to 63 mm up to 16 Bar, for a diameter from 75 to 110 mm up to 12.5 Bar. HDPE compression fittings are connected to PE pipes using a fitting ferrule, which is pressed onto the pipe. A compression fitting for polyethylene pipes is a collapsible structure that consists of modular components.

Areas of use

HDPE compression fittings are intended for connection and installation of polyethylene pipes of PE80 and PE100 brands in places of change of direction: turns and branches, in places of change in pipeline diameter, in places of connection with pipeline fittings, as well as for the transition from polyethylene pipes to pipes made of other materials. Compression fittings are used for the installation and repair of pipes of the PE80 and PE100 brands, which are used in drinking and technical cold water supply systems (pipelines transporting drinking and food water, process water in irrigation systems, etc.), as sealed cable channels. Also, these fittings can be used in any pipelines with a working medium, in relation to which the chemical resistance of the compression fittings themselves is ensured. Polyethylene compression fittings are widely used in automatic irrigation systems.

Application of polyethylene compression fittings low pressure ensures complete tightness between mounted parts. Installation of HDPE compression fittings of small diameters is carried out manually without the use of special tools, large diameters using a special compression wrench. Compression fittings for PE polyethylene pipes can be used for any weather conditions And negative temperatures. Compression bags should be stored indoors, protected from direct sunlight.

Installation of HDPE compression fittings

A compression fitting for polyethylene pipes consists of five elements:

1 -The cap nut is made of polypropylene copolymer, designed for fixing and crimping, has an internal thread and external grooves for convenient screwing.

2 -The crimp ring is made of polyoxymethylene, prevents movement and extrusion of the fixed pipe, as well as spontaneous unscrewing.

3 -The sleeve with a press-fit function is made of polypropylene copolymer, fixes the sealing gasket in the correct stable position and limits its extreme compression and deformation of the pipe.

4 -The O-ring gasket is made of nitrile rubber and ensures reliable tightness of the connection with the pipe, even if it is kinked.

5 -The body of the compression fitting is made of polypropylene copolymer, has a trapezoidal thread for the nut and a pipe insertion limiter.

Main advantages

  • Easy installation: installation occurs quickly and without preliminary preparation pipes, since the fittings are supplied ready for installation and do not require special skills or additional equipment.
  • Ease of repair: repairing compression fittings does not require special skills, additional equipment or welding machine, you only need a plastic or metal compression wrench, and the repair itself occurs by replacing the internal components of the compression fitting.
  • Multiple assembly and disassembly: assembly and disassembly of compression fittings for HDPE pipes can be carried out repeatedly up to 10 times.
  • Corrosion resistance: there are no metal elements in HDPE compression fittings
  • Hygienic: all parts of compression fittings are made from materials that are suitable for transportation drinking water and food liquids
  • Connection with elements made of other materials: HDPE compression fittings have standard internal and external thread, so prefabricated elements can be assembled to connect pipes and fittings made of different materials.

Properties and characteristics

Compression fittings for PE polyethylene pipes are highly resistant to temperature changes and highly resistant to various chemicals. Compression fittings for HDPE pipes are highly wear-resistant when transporting various liquids and have a service life of more than 50 years.

Connecting fittings for low pressure polyethylene pipes

HDPE (low pressure polyethylene pipes) are one of the most modern and popular products for pipeline construction for various purposes. In turn, each of them has an inlet and an outlet, and almost each has different shut-off valves and branches; accordingly, this requires fittings for HDPE pipes.

Types of polyethylene pipes depending on the purpose.

There are a large variety of them for HDPE pipes, which can be divided according to the principle of joining with the product. How to understand this diversity and how to choose the right one shut-off valves?

All types of HDPE pipe connections are divided into:

  • by rigidity: rigid and non-rigid (elastic) connection;
  • by connector: detachable and permanent connection;
  • according to the method of making the connection.

During installation, fittings for HDPE pipes, including shut-off valves, can be connected to the pipeline in various ways.

Permanent connection

Welding is the main type of connection. Exist various ways welding of products. Some of these methods are more common, some are used less frequently.

Butt welding diagram.

Welding methods:

  1. Butt welding is the most common method, when the end of the product and fitting is melted with a special apparatus and they are pressed together, as a result of the melt a monolithic seam is formed, which is similar in its properties to the pipe material. For this method, fittings and HDPE pipes must have the same diameter. Butt welding is very often used in the construction internal networks water supply and heat supply, while “hand irons” are used. If in an automatic welding machine the products are fixed with particular precision relative to the joining place, then when performing the work manually it is necessary to pay Special attention relative position products, and it is best to fix them with some kind of device before the seam hardens.
  2. Socket welding - has the same principle, except that this method uses fittings for HDPE pipes with an internal diameter that is equal to the outer diameter of the product. If in the first method (butt welding) the soldering iron is made in the form of a disk, then in socket welding one side of the soldering iron is flat and equal to the diameter of the pipe, the other side has the form of a rod, the diameter of which is equal to the internal diameter of the fitting.
  3. Edge (press) welding - is mainly used for welding a product with the entrances of wells, etc., where it is necessary to weld the pipe to a plane that is larger in size than its diameter. For this purpose, special PE electrodes are used. This method is used only in a non-pressure system that does not require absolute tightness.
  4. Electrofusion welding - the welding process involves melting polyethylene, while the fittings and HDPE pipes must also have the same diameter. However this method requires the use of special coupling. The coupling has a heating mesh fused during production and two contacts. Each such coupling has a barcode. If an automatic welding machine is used, it independently reads the data and sets optimal parameters welding Otherwise, these parameters must be set manually.

Plug-in connection

Based on the fact that all welded fittings are permanent connections, shut-off valves and control devices. Since in the event of failure of these devices, with a permanent connection, their replacement requires considerable effort.

The next connection type is . They are used, as a rule, on external networks and the principle of their operation is the same. The compression fitting has a ring (split) and a tightening nut.

Flange connection - used, as a rule, for large diameters, in places where shut-off and other valves are installed.

Nut, then we put the ring on the product, after which we tighten the nut. After it is tightened, this connection guarantees the impossibility of slipping of the ends of the product under tensile influences. In today's market, manufacturers offer both brass and compression types. As a rule, they are used when there is a threat of shock loads on a given connection.

Based on the manufacturers' data, compression fittings are designed for a working medium pressure of up to 20 atmospheres, that is, they are suitable for use in pressure networks.

Flange connection - used, as a rule, for joining pipes with a large diameter, in places where shut-off and other valves are installed, or when connecting a polyethylene pipeline with metal areas. At the same time, in polyethylene networks, cast HDPE flanges are usually used, and if it is necessary to switch to metal, brass fittings equipped with plastic outlet, which is intended for welded joint with a polymer product.

Threaded connection - an external one is used, which is cast on one of the ends of the pipe, and an internal one - on the other connection pipe or fitting. This connection is considered by experts to be not particularly reliable. Based on this, it is used for the installation of non-pressure liquid transportation systems or in the laying of cable communications.

Socket connection - based on fixing the end with standard diameter one product, inside an extension at the end of another product or fitting. As a rule, this connection is used during installation gravity system drainage (sewage) or when laying cables.

Types of fittings

For laying pipelines from, fittings are used in following cases(by material and type):

Types of fittings for detachable connections of HDPE pipes

  1. Equal coupling - produced with the same diameter at both ends. Used to join individual pieces of pipe or other elements with the same diameter size as the pipe.
  2. Compensation coupling - used to change the diameters of the pipeline or install an element with a larger/smaller size
  3. Thread-plastic connection. When joining, for example, a polymer and metal fittings, a combined fitting is performed. An embedded element with external or internal thread is mounted into a plastic sleeve; it is usually made of brass.
  4. Flanges - used for mounting removable fittings or joining pipes made of other materials. There are combined and PE. Flange couplings are a type of them.
  5. Bends. Of course, polyethylene is quite flexible material, but still one should not allow its bends to be too sharp. The use of bends allows the pipeline to significantly change direction. According to the standard, there are bends for bends of 45°, 66° and 90°.
  6. Crosses and tees - with the use of such fittings, the pipeline can be connected to required quantity other parts of the network. Branches can be of the same or different diameters.
  7. Plugs. This variety fitting allows you to preserve “blind” HDPE pipes. This situation may be, for example, if it is necessary to decommission a certain section of the water supply system, or they can be used in places where a new connection will be organized later, etc.

In general, the fittings for it allow you to create a combination that will make it possible to build a pipeline for any task and in any conditions. Along with the relatively low price and high operational properties HDPE products, this provides polymer material deservedly high popularity both among private consumers and installation organizations.

Fittings for HDPE (low-density polyethylene) pipes are in demand in residential and private construction; they are used as connecting fittings for cold water supply, sewerage systems and gas pipelines. As a rule, they can withstand a working flow pressure of up to 10 atm for gas or 16 atm if water is transported.

The fittings provide reliable and high-quality installation NPD pipes, which does not take much time and does not require much effort, for example, compression couplings can be installed using only a wrench.

These products are sold in almost any city, so there will be no problems purchasing them. The cost of connecting fittings is affected by the type, dimensions, as well as different kinds technical parameters.

Fittings used in the installation of pipes made of HDPE are usually classified according to the type of connection; the following options are currently practiced:

  • use of electrofusion welding;
  • crimp (collet) connection method;
  • butt welding;
  • flange connections.

Accordingly, each method requires the use of its own type of connecting pipe fittings. Let's look at each of them in detail.

Video: HDPE compression fittings, couplings, bends

Butt welding

For this method connecting fittings are not needed, since the pipes are welded directly butt-to-end. Welding allows us to provide almost any design solution.

The figure shows all the stages of this process:

  • a – centering of pipes relative to each other;
  • b – a chamfer is removed from the ends of the pipes; its width is from two to three millimeters. After this, the ends are cleaned and degreased;
  • c – the ends are checked for alignment;
  • d, e – using a heater fixed between the ends, polyethylene is melted;
  • f – pipes are connected; during this process it is necessary to prevent them from turning and moving.

The cooled connection is immediately ready for use.

Main advantages:

  • low cost;
  • quick installation.

Flaws:

  • it is not possible to connect pipes without welding equipment;
  • Welding is permissible only when the pipe thickness is more than 5mm.

Electrofusion welding connection

This technology will help in cases where it is impossible to use conventional welding, for example, when welding equipment cannot be installed at the joint. Connecting fittings for HDPE pipes are electric-welded fittings (couplings) on which an open electric heating coil is installed.

To connect pipes using this method, you need a welding machine equipped with a barcode scanner; a photo of such a device is shown in the figure below.

The connection process is performed according to the following algorithm:

  • the preparatory stage, it consists in the fact that before welding polyethylene pipes, their ends are cleaned and degreased;
  • the pipes are inserted into the socket of the coupling, and the embedded thermoelement is connected to the welding machine;

  • using a scanner, the barcode printed on the body of the connecting fittings is read, this is required to set the required mode;
  • after switching on, the layer of polyethylene melts, and the heating causes the pipe to expand, as a result of which it is pressed against the coupling;
  • The device automatically turns off according to the selected mode; after natural cooling, the connection is ready for use.

This method is good because it does not require special skills; it is absolutely easy to learn. But there is significant drawback This technology for connecting HDPE pipes means high prices for welding equipment and fittings.

Crimping (collet) method

Threaded (collet) connections of pipes made from HDPE are more popular than other methods, this is due to the fact that there is no need to resort to expensive specialized equipment.

All installation work can be done with a regular tool; in rare exceptions, a wrench may be needed (when the crimp nuts have a diameter of 63 to 110 mm).

Note that in addition to connecting pipe fittings for crimp connections, shut-off fittings are also produced, that is, on which taps are installed, which significantly expands the scope of its application when laying water pipes.

Using compression fittings to connect pipes made of HDPE material with a diameter of 20, 32, 50 mm, etc., you can independently assemble a reliable and durable water supply system for your home or apartment. This is easy to do if you follow these recommendations:

  • choose pipe fittings famous manufacturers, for example, Tiemme or Unidelta, this will avoid numerous problems during operation;
  • make the connection to a standard thread, which it is advisable to pre-clean and calibrate;
  • do not tighten the thread all the way, always leave one or two turns free;
  • for sealing, you can use special Teflon tape, sealant, or, as a last resort, flax tow. Remember that the fittings are plastic, not metal, so you don't need to apply a lot of force to them when tightening them;
  • It is recommended to install the connecting elements on a straight section, in this case the risk that the pipe will be twisted or flattened is minimal;
  • To securely fix large diameter pipes, use a wrench when tightening the nut.

To connect pipes made of HDPE material to each other, crimping method, you can also use brass fittings, which, although they are much more expensive, have many advantages, namely:

  • couplings are more reliable and durable than their polyethylene counterparts;
  • they have a higher pressure threshold, which ensures resistance to water hammer;
  • the material is not susceptible to corrosion;
  • When tightening the nut, you don't have to worry about stripping the thread.

The only drawback, as mentioned above, is the high cost, but if you can afford not to skimp on quality, then we recommend using this particular type of connecting pipe fittings.

Flange connections (adapters for metal and metal-plastic pipes)

It is impossible to do without this type of pipe fittings if it is necessary to ensure a transition from pipes made of HDPE to metal ones, for example, for connecting to a riser.

Approximate price level

Let us present the price level in various cities of Russia for the most common type of connecting elements for HDPE pipes, namely, compression fittings. This information may be useful if you are going to buy them, but do not have time to do a comparative analysis.

Average prices for fittings for HDPE pipes in different regions Russia is approximately the same, the cost of the device is Nizhny Novgorod, Samara, Chelyabinsk and Moscow are approximately at the same level. The review was carried out for retail prices, accordingly, the wholesale price will be lower.

Fittings for pipes made of low-density polyethylene are an indispensable element in professional work related to the installation of pipelines for heating or water supply. They are a transition to a threaded connection. The fittings are quite versatile and work well when using polyethylene, steel or other pipes. Choosing quality product, you guarantee the protection of the pipeline from leaks, as well as other similar problems. The company offers products of the following brands: ITAP, Tiemme, Unidelta.
